Abstract

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a pivotal element of electrochemical water splitting which is able to produce clean hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuel. Developing efficient Pt‐based electrocatalysts for the HER to work at all pHs is highly desirable, however, still a significant challenge, especially in alkaline conditions due to sluggish water dissociation and OHad transfer. Here, a new strategy for making a class of amorphous WOx‐surface decorated PtNi@Pt dendritic nanowires (WOx‐PtNi@Pt DNWs) to achieve highly efficient pH‐universal HER electrocatalysis is reported. The as‐made WOx‐PtNi@Pt DNWs display superior HER performance with the overpotentials of 24, 5, and 22 mV in 0.1 m KOH, 0.1 m HClO4, and 0.5 m phosphate‐buffered saline, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. The mass activity of WOx‐PtNi@Pt DNWs in alkaline conditions is 3.3 mA μgPt−1 at an overpotential of 70 mV, among the best in all the reported materials. Theoretical calculations confirm the introduction of WOx to the PtNi DNWs plays a pivotal role in promoting the efficient electron transfer for the alkaline and acidic HER. The activation of the PtNi region within the PtNiWO interface is achieved by the WOx induced strain effect, which guarantees the superior performance in the HER. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The phenolic and proline content were determined in honey samples of different floral origins (rapeseed, sunflower, buckwheat and Codonopsis) from five different regions of China. The phenolic and proline profile of these samples were used to construct a statistical model to distinguish honeys from different floral origins. Significant differences were identified among the studied honey samples from multivariate chemometric methods. The proline content varied among the four types of honeys, with the values decreasing in the order: buckwheat > Codonopsis > sunflower > rapeseed. Rapeseed honeys contained a high level of benzoic acid, while rutin, p-coumaric acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid were present at relatively high levels in buckwheat honeys. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that rapeseed honey could be distinguished from the other three unifloral honeys, and benzoic acid, proline and kaempferol could serve as potential floral markers. Using 18 phenolic compounds and proline the honey samples were satisfactorily classified according to floral origin at 94% correct prediction by linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The results indicated that phenolic compounds and proline were useful for the identification of the floral origin of the four type honeys.

Abstract

Invisible cloaks, which used to appear as a magic item by super hero for some special goals, have been turned into reality in scientific research by the transformation optics method, especially linear transformation and conformal transformation. All the invisibility cloaks focus on nano- or micro-fabricated artificial composite materials, and for the different spatial electromagnetic properties. In this paper, the electromagnetic parameters of cloak which is suitable for particular bump and the carpet invisibility cloak based on conformal mapping are calculated. Then, using COMSOL Multiphysics simulation, I simulate the performance of the designed carpet invisibility cloak using the simplified parameters. The cloak with a particular shaped bump operates at infrared frequencies and fulfills the requirement of hiding the objects, for a special light polarization. Moreover, this paper also reported a most unusual plasmonic grating invisibility cloak based on conformal mapping, which focus more on microwave frequencies, designed to reshape negatively refracting lenses and cloaks of invisibility. The cloak overcomes the drawback of quasi-conformal mapping, where unwanted lateral shifts happens, providing the new method for design the invisibility cloak. Hence, the work broadens the ways for future applications with macroscopic cloaking devices. Abstract

After being incubated with animal and human liver microsomes, metabolites of phase I and II were investigated. A comparison was performed by ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/time-of-flight coupled to mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q/TOF). Consequently, a total of four phase I metabolites and three glucuronide binding metabolites of T-2 toxin were discovered. Although a significant metabolic difference was observed among six species, HT-2 toxin was the major product in all species. In addition, the in vivo metabolism of T-2 toxin after oral administration was also investigated in chickens, In total, 18 metabolites were detected, of which 13 were novel, to our knowledge, and reported for the first time. To elucidate the structures of these metabolites, besides accurate mass data from their MS and MS2spectra, online hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) exchange technique was also carried out. These new metabolites were regarded as 3′-hydroxy-T-2 3-sulfate, 3′-hydroxy-HT-2 3-sulfate, 4′-hydroxy-HT-2, 3′,4′-dihydroxy-HT-2, 4′-carboxyl-T-2, 4′-carboxyl-HT-2, 4′-carboxyl-4′-hydroxy-T-2, and their isomers, implying that T-2 toxin was metabolized more extensively in animals than previously thought. Furthermore, 3′-hydroxy-HT-2, 4′-carboxyl-T-2, 3′-hydroxy-T-2, HT-2 toxin, and neosolaniol were identified to be the major metabolites of T-2 toxin in chickens. The present study expands existing knowledge about T-2 toxin metabolism, informing assessments of the impact T-2 toxin exposure and metabolism on health.

Abstract

To explore differences of zearalenone (ZEN) metabolism between various species, phase I and II metabolism by liver microsomes of animals and human were investigated using ultra high-pressure liquid chromatography-quadrupole/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q/TOF MS). A total of 24 metabolites were identified, among which 12 were reported for the first time. Reduction, hydroxylation, and glucuronidation were the major metabolic pathways of ZEN, and significant differences in various species were also observed. Reduction was the main reaction in swine and human, whereas hydroxylation was predominant in rats, chickens, goats, and cows in in vitro systems. Furthemore, in vivo metabolism of ZEN in rats and chickens was investigated, and 23 and 6 metabolites were identified in each species, respectively. Reduction, hydroxylation, and glucuronidation were the major metabolic pathways in rats, while reduction and sulfation predominated in chickens. These results further enrich the biotransformation profile of ZEN, providing a helpful reference for assessing the risks to animals and humans.

Abstract

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of prime importance in the development of highly efficient electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies such as water splitting and zinc air batteries. Ru-based nanocatalysts are still the best catalytic system for the OER; however, one of the greatest challenges is their relatively poor stability for the OER. Here, we report a novel architecture of ultrathin RuRh@(RuRh)O2 core/shell nanosheets with a core of ultrathin metallic RuRh nanosheets and a shell of RuO2/RhO2 oxides as superb electrocatalysts toward the OER. The RuRh@(RuRh)O2 core/shell nanosheets can achieve a high electrocatalytic activity toward the OER, with a low 245 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 51.2 mV dec−1, better than most state-of-the-art Ru-based or Ir-based electrocatalysts for the OER. Moreover, the RuO2/RhO2 oxides shell protect the normally labile RuRh NSs core against dissolution during the OER process, revealed by detailed rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) measurements for simultaneously recording the dissolution of Ru on the ring electrode and the ex situ measurement of Ru dissolution using the galvanostatic method. Therefore, the RuRh@(RuRh)O2 core/shell nanosheets exhibit much better OER stability in acid media compared with RuRh nanosheets and commercial RuO2. Theoretical calculations reveal that once the formation of the surface oxidation layers is achieved, the O-sites evidentially crossover the Fermi level which could guarantee the high electroactivity towards adsorbates while the RuRh core serves as an electron reservoir with high electrical conductivity. Abstract

Hydrogen production through proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE) requires more active and stable electrocatalysts in acidic media. Herein, a class of Ir‐based alloys is reported with flower‐like structure as excellent electrocatalysts both for hydrogen and oxygen generation in acid. Specially, the IrNi alloy nanoflowers (IrNi NFs) present the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, revealed by a low Tafel slope and overpotential at current density of 10 mA cm−2, exceeding the commercial Pt/C. It is discovered that alloying Ir with Ni can decrease the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) of Ir metal, resulting in almost 2.5 times increase in the HER intrinsic activity of IrNi NFs than Ir NFs. The IrNi NFs catalyst is also highly efficient in oxygen evolution reaction with mass activity of 379 A g−1 Ir at 1.51 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Furthermore, the overall water‐splitting devices using the IrNi NFs as catalysts for both cathode and anode show a low cell voltage of 1.60 V at 10 mA cm−2 and long‐term stability within 1000 cycles. This work uncovers that HBE optimization is the key of enhancing HER activity on Ir‐based alloys and these Ir‐based NFs hold great promise in future application in the PEMWE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A rapid ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) method was developed for feasible separation and quantification of 26 amino acids in royal jelly. The analysis was performed on Acquity UPLC system with Acquity UPLC AccQ·Tag Ultra Column within 8 min. The correlation coefficient values ( r 2 > 0.9978) indicated good correlations between the investigated compounds’ concentrations and their peak areas within the test ranges. The limits of quantitation and detection of 26 amino acids were 42.7–235.1 ng/mL and 12.9–69.3 ng/mL, respectively. The recoveries ranged from 90.1% to 100.9% and the overall relative standard deviations for intra- and inter-day were lower than 2.8%. The results showed that UPLC was a powerful tool for the analysis of amino acids in royal jelly. The method was also applied to quantitatively determine free amino acid (FAA) and total amino acid (TAA) profiles in RJ samples stored at different temperatures (−18 °C, 4 °C and 25 °C) for different time intervals (1, 3, 6 and 10 months). Results showed that the average contents of FAA and TAA in fresh royal jelly were 9.21 mg/g and 111.27 mg/g, respectively; the major FAAs were Pro, Gln, Lys, Glu, and the most abundant TAAs were Asp, Glu, Lys and Leu. Although the concentration of most FAAs and TAAs showed no significant difference during storage, contents of total Met and free Gln decreased significantly and continuously, and might be a parameter to predict the quality of royal jelly.
