227. Coherent energy scale revealed by ultrafast dynamics of UX3 (X = Al, Sn, Ga) single crystals.

Abstract

The temperature dependence of relaxation dynamics of UX3 (X = Al, Ga, Sn) compounds is studied using the time-resolved pump-probe technique in reflectance geometry. For UGa3, our data are consistent with the formation of a spin density wave gap as evidenced from the quasidivergence of the relaxation time τ near the Néel temperature TN. For UA13 and USn3, the relaxation dynamics shows a change from single-exponential to two-exponential behavior below a particular temperature, suggestive of coherence formation of the 5f electrons with the conduction band electrons. This particular temperature can be attributed to the spin fluctuation temperature Tsf, a measure of the strength of Kondo coherence. Our Tsf is consistent with other data such as resistivity and susceptibility measurements. The temperature dependence of the relaxation amplitude and time of UA13 and USn3 were also fitted by the Rothwarf-Taylor model. Our results show that ultrafast optical spectroscopy is sensitive to c-f Kondo hybridization in the f-electron systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

228. Morphology and ablation mechanism of Cf/Si3N4 composites ablated by oxyacetylene torch at 2200°C.

Abstract

Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> ceramic matrix composites reinforced by carbon fibres (C<subscript>f</subscript>/Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript>) were prepared by low pressure chemical vapour infiltration at 1250°C using SiCl<subscript>4</subscript> and NH<subscript>3</subscript> as precursor. The as prepared C<subscript>f</subscript>/Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> composites were ablated to determine the mechanism of the ablation resistance and oxidisation resistance by oxyacetylene torch at 2200°C. The morphology and microstructure of the composites were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The phase compositions of the composites were confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the matrix of the C<subscript>f</subscript>/Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> composites was composed of the amorphous Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> and nanometre α-Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript>. A central ablation region and a ring oxidisation region appeared on the surface of the as ablated C<subscript>f</subscript>/Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> composites. Sublimation of the Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> matrix and oxidation of the carbon fibres are the main ablation behaviours in the central region. Oxidation of the Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> matrix and deposition of SiO<subscript>2</subscript> particles are the main ablation behaviour in the ring region. A large number of SiO<subscript>2</subscript> liquid droplets produced during ablation were retained and formed spherical solid particles on the surface of the ring region after ablation. For the mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion of the carbon fibres and the Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> matrix, Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> matrix was cracked under the thermal impact of the oxyacetylene flame. With the passive oxidation of the as cracked surface, the continuous SiO<subscript>2</subscript> liquid was formed in the ring region. Subsequently, some residual Si<subscript>3</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript> particles were covered by transparent SiO<subscript>2</subscript> layer to form an amber-like microstructure. The instability regime is characterized by relaxations in the electron cyclotron emission due to the relativistic anomalous Doppler resonance effect which transfers energy from parallel to perpendicular motion. Two types of instabilities in the slide-away regime have been observed in the HT-7 tokamak. The scaling of the threshold value for the instabilities to occur has been derived. It is found that the threshold value is linearly dependent on the plasma current and independent of the toroidal magnetic field strength. We performed mutation analysis of RUNX2 on four unrelated Chinese individuals with CCD. Three novel distinct mutations were detected in the coding region of RUNX2: two missense and one frameshift. These mutations were exclusively clustered within the Runt domain. One missense mutation converts threonine to isoleucine at codon 200 (T200I). The other one substitutes leucine for arginine at codon 225 (R225L), which affects many family members. The frameshift mutation (214fs) in exon3 leads to the introduction of a translational stop codon at codon 221, resulting in a truncated RUNX2 protein. The reporter gene assays revealed that all the mutants exhibited significantly reduced transactivation activities on the osteocalcin promoter. Our results provide new genetic evidence that mutations involved in RUNX2 contribute to CCD. For conventional superconductors, tunnelling spectroscopy has established that pairing is mediated by bosonic modes (phonons); a peak in the second derivative of tunnel current d<superscript>2</superscript>I/dV<superscript>2</superscript> corresponds to each phonon mode. For high-transition-temperature (high-T<subscript>c</subscript>) superconductivity, however, no boson mediating electron pairing has been identified. One explanation could be that electron pair formation and related electron–boson interactions are heterogeneous at the atomic scale and therefore challenging to characterize. However, with the latest advances in d<superscript>2</superscript>I/dV<superscript>2</superscript> spectroscopy using scanning tunnelling microscopy, it has become possible to study bosonic modes directly at the atomic scale. Here we report d<superscript>2</superscript>I/dV<superscript>2</superscript> imaging studies of the high-T<subscript>c</subscript> superconductor Bi<subscript>2</subscript>Sr<subscript>2</subscript>CaCu<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>8+δ</subscript>. We find intense disorder of electron–boson interaction energies at the nanometre scale, along with the expected modulations in d<superscript>2</superscript>I/dV<superscript>2</superscript> (refs 9, 10). Changing the density of holes has minimal effects on both the average mode energies and the modulations, indicating that the bosonic modes are unrelated to electronic or magnetic structure. Instead, the modes appear to be local lattice vibrations, as substitution of <superscript>18</superscript>O for <superscript>16</superscript>O throughout the material reduces the average mode energy by approximately 6 per cent—the expected effect of this isotope substitution on lattice vibration frequencies. Significantly, the mode energies are always spatially anticorrelated with the superconducting pairing-gap energies, suggesting an interplay between these lattice vibration modes and the superconductivity. A unique gas-solids flow structure was found in the downer system with zero gas velocity, which is completely different from that under conditions with higher gas velocities, in terms of its radial and axial flow structures as well as its micro flow structure. The gas-solids flow pattern under zero gas velocity conditions, together with that under low gas velocity conditions, can be considered as a special regime which differs from that under higher gas velocity conditions. Local solids concentration fluctuations measured using a reflective-type fiber optic probe were processed to determine chaotic invariants (Kolmogorov entropy and correlation dimension). Radial and axial profiles of the chaotic invariants at different operating conditions show that the core region exhibits higher values of the chaotic invariants than the wall region. Both invariants vary strongly with local mean solids concentration. The transition section of the riser exhibits more complex dynamics while the bottom and top sections exhibit a more uniform macroscopic and less-complex microscopic flow structure. Increasing gas velocity leads to more complex and less predictable solids concentration fluctuations, while increasing solids flux generally lowers complexity and increases predictability. For both types of particles tested, i.e., Al2O3 (4.8 μm) and glass beads (39 μm), the fluidization quality in different gases shows the following priority sequence: Ar > He. In the same gaseous atmosphere, the particles when fluidized at an elevated temperature usually show larger bed voidages, higher bed pressure drops, and a lower umf for the group A powder, all indicating an enhancement in fluidization quality. Possible mechanisms governing the operations of gas type and temperature in influencing the fluidization behaviours of fine particles have been discussed with respect to the changes in both gas properties and interparticle forces (on the basis of the London-van der Waals theory).
