Morphometric analysis is the best method to understand and determine the shape, size, and dimension of a watershed. Conducting this analysis required a wide variety of quantitative measurements and mathematical analysis presenting valuable data related to hydrological characteristics of the watershed. Using GIS technique and Digital Elevation Models (SRTM-DEM) images were extremely facilitated the method and precisely boosted the results. Morphometric parameters were utilized of the Abbasan watershed determining hydrological properties and runoff assessment. The watershed area, of Abbasan covers (878.34) km2, the calculations of dimension, shape, and compactness coefficient are done which indicated elongated shape, low runoff intensity and low erosion rates. Most of the morphometric parameters were computed and analyzed such as relief properties, stream network, and drainage pattern characteristics which is referring to (2555)m elevation, low-moderate relief, six stream orders, and three types of drainage patterns respectively. Rectangular drainage patterns occupied a large area followed by Dendritic and Trellis patterns in terms of area. This study has given a comprehensive insight into the whole morphometric aspects of the Abbasan watershed.

Abstract Background The vertebral column has been used in forensic studies for its weight-bearing function and relative density. Sex estimation is one of the essential elements in an anthropological examination, as it may narrow down the possibility of a match by half. Hence, it is crucial to derive the population-specific reference data in each vertebra for sex estimation. This systematic review explored the most sexually dimorphic vertebra by using the conventional anthropometric analysis. Main body An electronic comprehensive search was conducted using databases such as Scopus, Web of Science (WOS) and EBSCO Medline for relevant studies between 2008 and 2020. The main inclusion criteria were studies in English, and studies on sex estimation by morphometric analysis of vertebra by CT scan or dry bone. Only studies related to human adult age and vertebra were analysed. Literature search identified 84 potentially relevant articles, in which 19 articles had fulfilled the inclusion criteria. This review included studies on the cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae in different populations. Conclusion The vertebral spine has demonstrated significant sexual dimorphism with variable prediction accuracies, whereby the body of a vertebra was found to be sexually dimorphic. It was shown that high accuracy of sex classification was provided by the second cervical, twelfth thoracic and first lumbar vertebrae, especially when they were used in combination.

In this study, the proteomic, morphometric, and photosynthetic pigment data of purslane (Portulaca oleracea) accessions were combined together to show their impact on genetic variation in order to establish a relationship between protein patterns and phenotypic behavior of the plant. Seeds of 18 collected purslane accessions were cultivated based on a completely randomized design with three replicates. Before the flowering stage, the data on morphology, photosynthetic pigment content, and seed proteins were obtained. The results showed a significant difference among purslane accessions in terms of the most studied agronomic characteristics and the content of photosynthetic pigments and proteins. The cluster analysis of the 18 purslane accessions based on agronomic data, and photosynthetic pigment content, and protein pattern data produced three main clusters. Moreover, the seed protein analysis revealed that the two polymorphic protein bands of size 40 kDa (protein “a”) and 30 kDa (protein “b”) effectively diversified the agronomic, photosynthetic pigment, and phylogenetic relationships among the purslane accessions. Interestingly, protein “a” was produced in plants growing in low altitude areas and played a suppressive role for TDW, while protein “b” was produced in plants growing in high altitude areas and functioned as an activator agent for this trait. Overall, the outcomes of the present study indicated the presence of high genetic variability (77.6%) among the purslane accessions. These findings suggest that these proteins should be sequenced for further proteomic analyses and can be used for hybridization to generate useful recombinants in segregating generations and improve breeding varieties of P. oleracea.

A recent rebound of juvenile redfish (Sebastes spp.) in areas where the northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) bottom trawl fishery in eastern Canada occurs has been challenging the fishing industry to maintain bycatch of this species within acceptable levels. Using self-contained underwater cameras and red lights, this study investigated the behavior of juvenile redfish in response to bycatch reduction devices (BRDs), called Nordmøre grids. Fish behavior was analyzed in grid systems with different bar spacings, including 22- and 19-mm bar spacings. A total of 10.3 h of useable underwater video was collected during commercial fishing conditions, which yielded individual observations of 931 redfish. Generalized linear models (GLMs) and behavioral trees were used to analyze the data. We observed that 52.5% of all redfish passed through the bar spacings and were retained. The duration of the selection process was relatively short (~1.9 s mean), and 57.8% of redfish reacted to the grids by swimming upwards, forward, or towards with respect to the grids. Behaviors exhibited by redfish and redfish retention were similar for both grids. GLM results suggested that as time in front of the grid increased and redfish had upwards or steady grid reactions, retention was drastically reduced. These were important variables that significantly explained the capture fate of redfish. The behavioral sequence that led to higher escape probability was redfish that approached upwards, had no contact with the grid, and reacted to the grid by continuing to move upwards to finally exit through the escape opening. GLM and behavioral trees gave a comprehensive view of redfish behavior, which is extremely useful for perfecting or developing any BRD to address juvenile redfish bycatch.

Twenty-three species and four subspecies of odontocete belonging to five families (Delphinidae, Physeteridae, Kogiidae, Phocoenidae, and Ziphiidae) are distributed along the Pacific coast of northern Mexico. The morphological variability of these species has been studied extensively and a number of taxonomic studies have focused on cranial characteristics. The goal of this study was to describe the periotics of the odontocetes of the Pacific coast of northern Mexico and develop a taxonomic tool using descriptions of each species. We used a geometric morphometric analysis of 186 periotics housed in local and national osteological collections. Our results show the taxonomic value of periotics and a significant phylogenetic signal associated with this structure. Culex mosquitoes are important vectors of various pathogens to both humans and animals. The present study describes a new species to science as Culex (Culex) kodaikanalensis Suman, Veer and Chandra sp. nov. based on morphology, morphometrics of adult females and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I and 16S rRNA genes. This species, Cx. kodaikanalensis, belongs to Mimeticus subgroup of Culex genus represented by banded or spotted wings. It can be identified with the absence of longitudinal pale stripes on anterior surface of all tibiae and presence of pale spot on furcation of both R and M veins. In addition, the length of pale spots on R4+5 (0.18 to 0.9) and Anal (0.1 to 0.5) veins of Cx. kodaikanalensis also differ from other species of the subgroup. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (562 bp) and 16S rRNA (539 bp) gene sequences of Cx. kodaikanalensis established the close affinity with Mimeticus subgroup species in comparison to other culicine species being the closest to Culex gaugleri. These pieces of evidence confirm the status of Cx. kodaikanalensis as an individual species. Culex kodaikanalensis is prevalent at high altitudes (> 1500 m) of Kodaikanal hills in Tamil Nadu, India. One of the crustacean species caught by Senggarang fishermen in Dompak Waters, Tanjungpinang City is the red swimming crab (Thalamita spinimana). The morphometric and meristic studies of red crab have not been widely carried out. Certainty of morphometric and meristic characters could characterize the taxonomic certainty of a species. This study aims to examine the morphometric and meristic characteristics of red swimming crab in Dompak Waters, Tanjungpinang City, Riau Islands Province. Sampling was carried out following the trip of Senggarang fishermen that caught red swimming crab with trap in Dompak Waters, conducted in April and May 2022 using the census method (by taking all the samples). The growth of female red crabs has 1 positive allometric character, namely carapace width and weight, the remaining nine other characters are negative allometric. The relationship status of morphometric characters in female red swimming crabs has a low, medium, strong relationship and the relationship status of morphometric characters in male red swimming crabs has a very low, low and very strong relationship. Meristic calculations on red swimming crabs have 6-11 spines on the profundus. The number of spines on the carpus 6-8 spines. The number of spines on 4-6 spines. Bisbul (Diospyros discolor Willd.) is one of the collections from the Bogor Botanical (BBG). The wide distribution of this plant in Southeast Asia's tropical forests creates many morphometric variations of this species. The diversity of leaf morphometric variations of a plant species can be the basis for grouping various species. This study aimed to determine the morphometric diversity of Bisbul leaves from various locations of origin. The study took samples of bisbul leaves from Bogor Botanical Gardens from three accessions, namely the Philippines, West Java, and Papua. All the trees are over 30 years old. The leaves are taken based on a horizontal position, vertical crown, and leafage. The results showed that the origin of the location gave different multiplier values to calculate the area, namely the Philippines y = 0.733x + 0.034; West Java y = 0.765x-2,949; and Papua y = 0.758x-1.389. The length to leaf width ratio also has differences, namely, the Philippines, which is 2.64, West Java 2.65, and Papua 2.81. The chlorophyll content in young leaves increases in old leaves. The samples from Papua also have the highest chlorophyll content compared to the Philippines and West Java. This difference indicates morphometric variations between the three, even within one species. Some environmental conditions may affect shade areas and tree age. During a survey on the biodiversity of plant-parasitic nematodes in the south of Iran, Hoplolaimus indicus from the grass was recovered. Hoplolaimus are ectoparasites or semiendoparasites of various crops. Hoplolaimus indicus was studied using morphological and molecular techniques. Hoplolaimus indicus is identified based on the lip region with three annuli, five clear and one obscure pharyngeal nucleus, excretory pore at the isthmus level, and spicules with 42–46 µm long. The scan electron microscopy (SEM) observation revealed basal annuli of the lip region divided into six blocks, and one incisure along the body starts from 7–8 annuli posterior to the lip region ended at the tail tip. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the present H. indicus and the population of the same species from Iran stand very close to each other. Besides, H. indicus and H. columbus stand separately. Nblast for the 28S rDNA revealed 100% identity of the tested species and other H. indicus from Iran (MF421900) and Myanmar (MN462843). In contrast, the COI of mtDNA showed 97% similarity with several sequences of the American populations of H. columbus (e.g., KP864621). However, the phylogenetic analysis using the mentioned above markers placed H. indicus very close to H. columbus, H. indicus, and H. seinhorsti, particularly using 28S rDNA. Measurements, light microscopy (LM), SEM, and phylogenetic analysis for H. indicus are given. The COI of mtDNA sequence and SEM observation for H. indicus are reported for the first time. In conclusion, the result indicated that 28S rDNA is not a good marker to distinguish H. indicus from the close species, including H. seinhorsti and H. columbus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gender determination of Muscovy duck as early as possible is essential for the efficiency and effectiveness of duck production. This study aimed to determine the morphometric differences in prepubertal male and female Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) as predictors of gender. This study used a split-plot design, with the observed variables cranium length, width and height, mandibular length, and rostrum length and width. This study used a total of 80 samples of duck heads consisting of 40 male and 40 female Muscovy duck heads, with ten heads each in the age group of 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks, respectively. Results showed that the length, width, and height of the cranium, mandibular length, and rostrum lengthand width were greater in males (p <0.05) than those of the females in all age groups. It could be concluded that the morphometric size of prepubertal male Muscovy ducks head was greater than those of the female ones at the same age; thereby, it could be used to distinguish gender. Based on the morphometrics, further study can also be conducted to measure other body parts of the Muscovy duck apart from the cranium. Objective: The present study is aimed at phenotypic characterization and mitochondrial d-loop analysis of indigenous “Diara” buffalo population, which are mostly confined to the villages on the South and North Gangetic marshy plains in the Bihar state of India. These buffaloes are well adapted and are best suited for ploughing and puddling the wet fields meant for paddy cultivation. Methods: Biometric data on 172 buffaloes were collected using a standard flexible tape measure. Animals are medium in size; the typical morphometric features are long head with a broad forehead and moderately long and erect ears. Genomic DNA was isolated from unrelated animals. The mtDNA d‐loop 358‐bp sequence data was generated and compared with 338 sequences belonging to riverine and swamp buffaloes. Results: Based on the mitochondrial d-loop analysis the Diara buffaloes were grouped along with the haplotypes reported for riverine buffalo. Sequence analysis revealed the presence of 7 mitochondrial D loop haplotypes with haplotype diversity of 0.9643. Five of the haplotypes were shared with established swamp breeds and with Buffalo population of Orissa in India. Conclusion: Morphometric analyses clearly shows distinguishing features like long and broad forehead which may be useful in identification. The germplasm of Diara buffalo is much adapted to the marshy banks of river Ganga and its tributaries. It constitutes a valuable genetic resource which needs to be conserved on priority basis. One of the endemic freshwater fishes in Danau Sentarum National Park (DSNP) is Leptobarbus melanopterus which has high economic value for both commercial and collection purpose. However, the overfishing of L. melanopterus running over decades with harmful catch tools is worried could contribute to the population decline in the future. At the same time, this species has never been cultured and fishermen catch directly in the habitat on a daily basis. This research was aimed to identify the morphological and anatomical characters of L. melanopterus. All samples were collected from three different sites in DSNP and measured its morphological and anatomical sizes manually. The results showed that the length of mandibula barbel was the distinguishing character between females and males, with loading score of 0.81. Most meristic variables showed no difference between two sexes. In terms of anatomical measurements, L. melanopterus females had larger gill sizes than males, including gill raker, gill arch and fill filament. Our findings signify the thorough morphological and anatomical sizes of L. melanopterus which are important in identifying fish stock, growth pattern and sexual dimorphism for future culture management. The crested cusk-eel, Ophidion josephi Girard, 1858, is a coastal marine species that is distributed in the northwestern Atlantic, from the northern Gulf of Mexico to Georgia, USA. Eighteen specimens (177--230 mm in standard length) were caught by beach purse seine at a depth of about 5 m, in Veracruz, in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. This is the first documentation from Mexican marine waters and the southernmost confirmed records of this species, showing that its range extends further south than previously known and that it shares faunistic similarities with other species in the northwestern Atlantic. The objective of this research was to study the morphometric measurements, productive and reproductive performances of indigenous cows and heifers in Northern Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K). A total 237 phenotypic characteristics was recorded visually. Five main coat colors (reddish brown, light brown, black, white and grey) were found with black muzzle and eye-lashes. The head length was 37.7±0.2 cm with small horns (11±0.3 cm). The positive correlation between horn length/horn base circumference, ear length/ear width, forehead width/horn length were found statistically significant (p≤0.01). The highest positive correlations were found between age/rump width (0.77), age/parity (0.66), body weight/heart girth (0.62) and parity/rump width (0.60). The average age at puberty (41.02±0.6 months), average age at first service (49.3±0.7 months), age at first calving (58.54±0.7 months), mean gestation period (279.6±0.2 days), mean post-partum heat period (253.2±14.8 days), mean service period (257.69±5.8 days), mean calving interval (17.87±0.4 months), mean service per conception (1.5±0.06) and average milk yield per day (1.20±0.06 litre) were also recorded. Interventions for bone diseases (e.g. osteoporosis) require testing in animal models before clinical translation and the mouse tibia is among the most common tested anatomical sites. In vivo micro-Computed Tomography (microCT) based measurements of the geometrical and densitometric properties are non-invasive and therefore constitute an important tool in preclinical studies. Moreover, validated micro-Finite Element (microFE) models can be used for predicting the bone mechanical properties non-invasively. However, considering that the image processing pipeline requires operator-dependant steps, the reproducibility of these measurements has to be assessed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra- and inter-operator reproducibility of several bone parameters measured from microCT images. Ten in vivo microCT images of the right tibia of five mice (at 18 and 22 weeks of age) were processed. One experienced operator (intra-operator analysis) and three different operators (inter-operator) aligned each image to a reference through a rigid registration and selected a volume of interest below the growth plate. From each image the following parameters were measured: total bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD), BMC in 40 subregions (ten longitudinal sections, four quadrants), microFE-based stiffness and failure load. Intra-operator reproducibility was acceptable for all parameters (precision error, PE < 3.71%), with lowest reproducibility for stiffness (3.06% at week 18, 3.71% at week 22). The inter-operator reproducibility was slightly lower (PE < 4.25%), although still acceptable for assessing the properties of most interventions. The lowest reproducibility was found for BMC in the lateral sector at the midshaft (PE = 4.25%). Densitometric parameters were more reproducible than most standard morphometric parameters calculated in the proximal trabecular bone. Introduction: The direction of blood movement in normal and abnormal placenta is curious from a morphometric point of view. Once pregnancy is compromised by an illness like hypertension, maternal and foetal distress can lead to negative outcomes. The quantitative variations in the blood vessels within the chorion and the chorionic villi in placentas from pregnancies are complicated by preeclampsia (PE) and are poorly defined. The purpose of this study was to calculate and explore the morphometric measurement of blood vessels involved in the progress of hypertension through pregnancy within the chorion and the chorionic villi among normotensive women (n = 39) versus a preeclamptic group (n = 35).Methods: Measurements used a computerized morphometry system and a Vascular Medicine Institute (VMI) calculator.Results: Our data showed a significant decrease in vessel area (VA), wall area (WA), lumen area (LA), mean wall thickness-boundary (MWTB), mean wall thickness-rosette (MWTR), mean diameter-rosette (MDR), mean wall thickness-skeleton (MWTS), and external diameter-skeleton (EDS) in preeclampsia women compared to normotensive women. There were no significant differences between preeclampsia and control group in lumen area.Discussion: We concluded that preeclamptic chorion and chorionic villi vessels are linked with significant structural discrepancies; future studies should address morphological events that occur throughout pregnancy including associations between arterial elastic properties-mainly collagen and structural proteins in hypertensive patients. A more integrated approach involving parallel analysis of the effects of potential vasoactive factors on the morphology of foetal vessel alteration is also needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2018, in order to study a few biological characteristics, including length-weight relationship, condition factor, fecundity, age frequency, and morphological characteristics of Salmo trutta, a total of 38 specimens were collected in three upstream stations, Grap, Gathedeh, and Dehdar (tributaries of the Taleghan River). Some of the collected samples were transferred to the laboratory after fixation in the buffer 10% formalin and 29 morphometric and seven meristic traits were measured and counted, respectively. In addition, based on the conservation importance of the studied species, a number of morphometric traits of the few specimens were analyzed using the acquired high-quality pictures by ImageJ software. The results showed that the samples have 4 age groups, including 1, 2, 3, and 4 years old. The highest and lowest frequency was one-year-old group with 73.7% and 4 with 2.6%, respectively. The sex ratio was 1.8 (male): 1 (female). Based on the results, the length-weight relationship was obtained as Y = 0.0004x2.39. The condition factor was in the range of 0.71 to 1.26, as well as absolute fecundity of the Taleghan population was 168-379. Dimensions of different types of scales on the wings of the moth Creatonotos transiens Walker were analyzed using micrometry. A total of 65 morphologically distinct types of scales were investigated, including 35 from dorsal side and 30 from ventral portion. Dorsal side scales have a length range of 82.7 to 141.3μ and width range of 55.1 to 78.8μ. The length of scale on the ventral region ranged from 82.7 to 133.9μ and width 63 to 78.8μ. Pennahia anea is among of the demersal fish landed at Asemdoyong Fish Auction Centre, Pemalang. P. anea doesn't show sexual dimorphism, so that other characters are needed to differentiate male and female individuals, i.e. truss morphometric and meristic characters. Previous studies have shown that truss morphometric and meristic can differentiate between male and female individuals. This study aims to describe the morphometric and meristic truss characters and determine the truss morphometrically and meristic characters that distinguish between males and females of Pennahia anea. The research used a survey method with a purposive random sampling technique. Male and female individuals of P. anea were examined based on their meristic and truss morphometric characters. The data were analyzed statistically using Mann Whitney non-parametric test. The result proved that male and female were significantly different in seven out of the 31 truss distances. Male individuals had a larger size than female individuals in three truss distances. In contrast, the male had a smaller size than the female individuals in four out of seven truss distances that distinguish both sexualities. The soft fin radius of the ventral fin was significantly different between male and female of P. anea. It could be concluded that male and female individuals of Pennahia anea have different truss distances and meristic characters with seven truss distances and one meristic character are different

Al-Ratqa Valley is located in the western part of Iraq within the western Anbar plateau, and it occupies an area of (5509) km2, and it consists of six secondary basins and they differ in all morphometric characteristics. The study also included the natural characteristics of the area that have an effect on the spatial and morphological characteristics and the characteristics of the drainage pattern. Introduction: The jugular foramen is in close proximity with ninth, tenth and eleventh cranial nerves and the middle ear, it is the most common area for brain tumours like neurinomas and glomus tumours. Introduction: Each kidney has a single renal artery. The kidney receives about 20% of the cardiac output. Renal artery variations are a common entity that becomes an important consideration while performing renal surgeries. Aim: To study the variability of the renal arteries concerning emergence, diameter, and length. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy of VMGMC, Solapur, Maharashtra, India for three years, from August 2012 to September 2015. The pattern of the renal artery in humans were studied for emergence, length, and it’s branching by dissection method in 75 human cadavers. A thorough dissection of these specimens were done by routine dissection instruments. Statistical analysis of specimens of both sides were carried out by Epi info 7.2.5.0. Unpaired t-test was applied and p-value was derived for the length and diameter of the artery. Results: Right renal artery 37 (49.4%) had proximal origin in relation to the left renal artery in a greater number of specimens. Average distance between the superior mesenteric and the left renal artery was 11.03±4.8 mm. The average diameter of right renal artery was 6.65±1.6 mm. The average length of the Right Renal Artery (RRA) 39.5±11.8 mm was significantly greater than Left Renal Artery (LRA) 30.7±12.6 mm, p-value

Bisbul (Diospyros discolor Willd.) is one of the collections from the Bogor Botanical (BBG). The wide distribution of this plant in Southeast Asia's tropical forests creates many morphometric variations of this species. The diversity of leaf morphometric variations of a plant species can be the basis for grouping various species. This study aimed to determine the morphometric diversity of Bisbul leaves from various locations of origin. The study took samples of bisbul leaves from Bogor Botanical Gardens from three accessions, namely the Philippines, West Java, and Papua. All the trees are over 30 years old. The leaves are taken based on a horizontal position, vertical crown, and leafage. The results showed that the origin of the location gave different multiplier values to calculate the area, namely the Philippines y = 0.733x + 0.034; West Java y = 0.765x-2,949; and Papua y = 0.758x-1.389. The length to leaf width ratio also has differences, namely, the Philippines, which is 2.64, West Java 2.65, and Papua 2.81. The chlorophyll content in young leaves increases in old leaves. The samples from Papua also have the highest chlorophyll content compared to the Philippines and West Java. This difference indicates morphometric variations between the three, even within one species. Some environmental conditions may affect shade areas and tree age. In addition, DNA research from accession D. discolor is also needed to determine the cause of the morphometric variation.

Interventions for bone diseases (e.g. osteoporosis) require testing in animal models before clinical translation and the mouse tibia is among the most common tested anatomical sites. In vivo micro-Computed Tomography (microCT) based measurements of the geometrical and densitometric properties are non-invasive and therefore constitute an important tool in preclinical studies. Moreover, validated micro-Finite Element (microFE) models can be used for predicting the bone mechanical properties non-invasively. However, considering that the image processing pipeline requires operator-dependant steps, the reproducibility of these measurements has to be assessed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra- and inter-operator reproducibility of several bone parameters measured from microCT images. Ten in vivo microCT images of the right tibia of five mice (at 18 and 22 weeks of age) were processed. One experienced operator (intra-operator analysis) and three different operators (inter-operator) aligned each image to a reference through a rigid registration and selected a volume of interest below the growth plate. From each image the following parameters were measured: total bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD), BMC in 40 subregions (ten longitudinal sections, four quadrants), microFE-based stiffness and failure load. Intra-operator reproducibility was acceptable for all parameters (precision error, PE < 3.71%), with lowest reproducibility for stiffness (3.06% at week 18, 3.71% at week 22). The inter-operator reproducibility was slightly lower (PE < 4.25%), although still acceptable for assessing the properties of most interventions. The lowest reproducibility was found for BMC in the lateral sector at the midshaft (PE = 4.25%). Densitometric parameters were more reproducible than most standard morphometric parameters calculated in the proximal trabecular bone. In conclusion, microCT and microFE models provide reproducible measurements for non-invasive assessment of the mouse tibia properties.

Background: The freshwater ichthyofauna of Wallacea is diverse and understudied. A baseline survey of Bolano Sau Lake in Parigi Moutong District, Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia in 2019 found an eleotrid goby (local name payangka) with characters conforming to the genus Giuris, long considered monophyletic as G. margaritacea/G. margaritaceus but recently found to comprise at least eight species. This study focused on the molecular (DNA barcoding) identification and phenotypic characters of the payangka. Methods: Payangka samples were collected from August to December 2019 in collaboration with local fishermen, weighed and measured, and preserved in 75% ethanol. Length, weight, sex (n=111) and seventeen morphometric characters/six meristic counts (n=42) were recorded. DNA barcoding was performed on a fin clipping preserved in 96% ethanol. Homologous nucleotide sequences were obtained from public (GenBank and BOLD) databases, analysis conducted in MEGA X, and phylogenetic trees edited in the Interactive Tree of Life (iToL). Results: Within the polyphyletic Giuris clade, the payangka sequence resolved into a sub-clade identified as Giuris laglaizei (Sauvage 1880), a recently resurrected taxon, based on a sequence provided by Philippe Keith. The length-weight relationship (L = 0.0087∙W3.162) indicated mildly allometric positive growth. Size distribution differed significantly between male and female fish with significantly larger mean size of males (13.56 cm) than females (11.62 cm). The meristic formula was: D VI-I,8 A I,8 P 13 V I,5 C15. Phylogenic analysis indicated four Giuris species in wetlands around Tomini Bay and five in Sulawesi. Conclusions: This first record of G. laglaizei in Indonesia advances knowledge of Wallacean and Indo-Pacific gobioid biogeography and highlights the need for a revision of the conservation status of the taxa currently grouped under Giuris margaritacea/G. margaritaceus in the IUCN Red List and FishBase databases. The data will inform biodiversity and fisheries management at local and regional levels.

Sawang duck is one of Indonesia's local dual-purpose type ducks due to the offspring of Tsaiya ducks originating from Taiwan. Tsaiya ducks enter the Sawangarea, brought by residents from Singapore around 1955 and subsequently bred in the Sawang Village, adapting to the environment and the local farming. This research was conducted in August-December 2018. Primary data on the qualitative, morphometric, and potential feed were taken in Sawang Village, Karimun Regency, Riau Islands Province. Currently, Sawang duck is only found in Sawang Village, maintained by two farmers. Secondary data of potential areas and poultry populations were obtained from the Department of Food and Agriculture of Karimun Regency, and proximate analysis was carried out at the Ruminant Nutrition Laboratory, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Andalas University. The research method was conducted by survey with census sampling techniques. The Sawang duck has a diversity of colors for feather, skin, beak, and shank. The morphometric decrease was indicated by bodyweight of 1,450 ± 119.52 grams, femur length of 7.41 ± 1.62 cm, tibia length of 9.94 ± 0.51 cm, length of shank 4.38 ± 0.25 cm, third finger length 6.36 ± 0.90 cm, maxilla length 5.21 ± 0.16 cm, backbone length 20.13 ± 1.13 cm, wing bone length 26.65 ± 1.70 cm, bone length chest 10.63 ± 0.80 cm, and shank circumference 1.24 ± 0.10 cm. This study aimed to compare morphological variation of the two populations of the Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L., 1758) from the Anzali wetland and Chamkhaleh River downstream by sampling 20 specimens from each in 2006. Evolutionary information on the greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) in the Eastern and Southern African regions is scarce, making population management and conservation of the species challenging. We studied T. swinderianus populations from two spatially isolated Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania to link molecular and geometric–morphological evidence to characterize these populations’ diversity. Fecal samples (n = 50) and skulls (n = 99) of T. swinderianus were collected from Udzungwa (north and south) and Uluguru mountains (urban and rural sites) and analyzed using molecular and geomorphometry techniques. Molecular analysis grouped the population into three distinct clades based on the location where the samples were collected, while the morphometric method was not able to distinctively separate the populations. Both methods revealed that the population obeyed the isolation by distance model with higher genetic distance between the Udzungwa and Uluguru populations and lower distance between Uluguru urban and rural populations. Both Mahalanobis and Procrustes distances in skull landmarks between the Udzungwa and Uluguru populations were significantly higher across the dorsal, ventral, and lateral views of the skulls, suggesting strongly that molecular and morphometric methods applied together can be useful in characterizing the population traits of the least known species. Our study suggests genetic and morphometric methods could complement each other in understanding the evolutionary biology and within-species diversity of vertebrate species that do not exhibit strong intra-species differentiation.

The Earth Impact Database (EID) currently includes four impact craters located in Algeria. These craters are well-exposed, morphologically visible, partially covered and all situated in a vast, very arid Saharan geological domain devoid of any vegetation cover. Consequently, they can be easily identified using the TanDEM-X digital elevation model and Alsat-1B satellite images. The aim of this work is to identify the characteristics of sedimentary target rocks that control the morphometric and structural parameters of Algerian craters, as well as the effects of post-impact processes. Crater exposure, type, and structure (depth-diameter ratio, rim-to-floor height, central peak and moat diameters), outline (circular, polygonal, elongated) and impactite types are therefore discussed. Relative or stratigraphic dating and erosion/burial rates are estimated for the craters. Results indicate that Amguid and Talemzane are simple, well-preserved young craters, closer to a pristine state. Tin Bider is a complex exposed structure showing an irregular outline with a well-developed central peak and two rings. Ouarkziz is a transitional crater; based on its diameter alone it is classified as a complex crater; however, a topographic central peak is not observed. A deep formation uplift is detected in the central zone, interpreted as a stratigraphic peak where the uplift has not reached significant heights to form a clearly visible peak. The objective of this study was to identify morphological characteristics of different populations of Penaeus schmitti Burkenroad, 1936 to contribute to its biology and conservation. In order to compare geographically isolated populations, between 2014 and 2016, selected biological variables were analyzed in six populations dispersed along the Brazilian coast and one from the Cuban coast. Specimens with eight upper rostral teeth predominated. The ordination of shrimp measurements by non-metric multidimensional scaling showed the greatest dispersion on data from Cuba, Rio Grande do Norte, and Espirito Santo, which are also the localities that presented the highest coefficient of variation. On the other hand, the values corresponding to Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, and Santa Catarina showed a greater similarity or clustering of the data of each location. Tail weight was estimated using length and depth of the sixth abdominal segment. The populations of Santa Catarina, Brazil (28°S), had the longest and heavier abdomens proportionally among all the compared populations, while the organisms of Manzanillo, Cuba (20°N), had proportionally shorter abdomens and the narrowest cephalothorax. The regression equation indicated a positive allometric growth for P. schmitti, and the largest total length reported for genus Penaeus in the natural environment corresponded to a P. schmitti specimen. This information could be useful in future taxonomic studies to correctly identify the species and its morphological variability. Color differences were also observed, with white ventral spots in the sternite XIV of some females from Brazilian populations, which was not previously reported in the literature. In this study, polymorphism in behaviour, morphology, and stable isotope signatures of burbot from Lake Southern Konnevesi, Finland, Europe, was examined. First, local knowledge was collected on exceptional polymorphism of the spawning behaviour and morphology of burbot. These phenomena were then studied based on catch samples. Interviews and catch sample analyses suggested two morphs of burbot: one morph spawning in late February in the littoral zone and other in late March, in deep profundal, depths of about 30 m. Fish caught from the profundal zone had higher average proportional somatic body weights and wider heads than those caught from the littoral spawning sites in February. The length-at-age of the individuals from the littoral catch was longer than that of the profundal catch. Stable isotope analysis revealed differences in the mean carbon isotope ratio between sampling sites, suggesting differences in diet. Variability in several of the aforementioned variables was correlated. This study is the first to imply polymorphism in burbot populations from a lake in Eurasia, where burbot are considered as near-threatened species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Original data on diet, internal anatomy, morphology, reproduction, and parasites of Chiroderma doriae vizottoi from the State of Ceará (Brazil) are presented. Intact and crushed seeds of Solanum rhytidoandrum and scales of Lepidoptera were detected in the gastrointestinal tract and feces. Observation of internal organs did not reveal any abnormalities; the intestines were, on average, 11 times longer than the animal's body length. Reproduction seems to occur in the rainy season. Age-at-death and sex estimation are considered among the essential parameters in osteobiography and represent the first stage of study in bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology and paleoanthropology. This review discusses the accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of various methodological approaches in estimating important biological profile parameters based on adult skeletal remains. It emphasizes in various aspects the contribution of Vladimír Novotný for the development of current methods for studying the skeleton. The need for accurate and reliable morphological and metric methods is still necessary in the skeletal identification process despite the use of a molecular approach. The results of morphological, metric and other methods complement each other and are equivalent and unbiased if used correctly. The more frequent use of modern imaging techniques and geometric morphometric methods in anthropological research has facilitated the acquisition and revision of available population data. They also allow the development of robust methods applicable to individuals with unknown population affinity. Estimating age after death in adults is still a very difficult part of estimating the biological profile. Current age estimation methods can only estimate age accurately and reliably over very wide age intervals. The fact that these approaches are mostly based on a single skeletal indicator assessed visually or use an inappropriate statistical approach, does not contribute to improving this situation. For estimating sex, the DSP (Diagnose Sexuelle Probabiliste) method is becoming a valid method and widely used technique for estimating sex in terms of accuracy and reliability. Other methods using software programs facilitate the work of biological anthropologists in various areas of research and practice. Physiologically based kinetic (PBK) models are a promising tool for xenobiotic environmental risk assessment that could reduce animal testing by predicting in vivo exposure. PBK models for birds could further our understanding of species-specific sensitivities to xenobiotics, but would require species-specific parameterization. To this end, we summarize multiple major morphometric and physiological characteristics in chickens, particularly laying hens (Gallus gallus) and mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) in a meta-analysis of published data. Where such data did not exist, data are substituted from domesticated ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and, in their absence, from chickens. The distribution of water between intracellular, extracellular, and plasma is similar in laying hens and mallards. Similarly, the lengths of the components of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) are similar in chickens and mallards. Moreover, not only are the gastrointestinal absorptive areas similar in mallard and chickens but also they are similar to those in mammals when expressed on a log basis and compared to log body weight. In contrast, the following are much lower in laying hens than mallards: cardiac output (CO), hematocrit (Hct), and blood hemoglobin. There are shifts in ovary weight (increased), oviduct weight (increased), and plasma/serum concentrations of vitellogenin and triglyceride between laying hens and sexually immature females. Background and Aim: Indigenous Kedah-Kelantan (KK) cattle are well adapted with distinguished reproductive capabilities; they account for more than 70% of the domestic beef production in Malaysia. The published literature on the phenotypic and morphometric characteristics of KK cattle are sparse and require further improvement. Therefore, this study was aimed to determine the phenotypic and morphometric characteristics of Malaysian KK cattle and method of estimating live body weight (BW). Materials and Methods: Morphometric and phenotypic measurements were taken from 184 KK cattle (102 males and 82 females) sourced from three regions. Each animal’s color pattern was recorded for their coat, muzzle, face, eyelashes, horns, tail switch, hoof, and legs through visual observation. Length measurements were taken of the body, face, ear, horn, tail, and rump. Several morphological features such as length, width, and girth were measured using a measuring tape, while wither height and hip height were assessed with a measuring scale. Results: Brown is the predominant coat color in KK cattle (>82%). The overall means of head length, face width (FW), ear length, horn length, wither height, heart girth (HG), body length (BL), and rump length were 42.5±4.5, 17.3±2.9, 19.8±3.1, 9.9 ±4.4, 104.3±7.1, 127.4±13.2, 98.3±12.3, and 32.4±4.1 cm, respectively. Different morphometric parameters of length, width, and circumference were significantly (p˂0.01) larger in males than females, except for tail length and TG. Correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis clearly revealed that BL is the best parameter for estimating live BW in KK cattle. Conclusion: Phenotypic and morphometric measurements in this study showed that Malaysian KK cattle generally possess a brown coat pattern with smaller body size, while BL revealed to be the best parameter to predict BW. The data generated from this study would be useful as baseline data for the identification and selection of KK cattle based on their phenotypical- and morphological-features for further improvement of this breed. Scorpions are one of the most venomous animals which cause serious public health problems. The sting of scorpions can sometimes be fatal depending on the scorpion species involved. So far, sixty-six (66) scorpion species have been identified in Iran. Annually, about 40-50000 cases of scorpionism are reported in Iran. Odontobuthus doriae and O. bidentatus are among the most medically important scorpion species in Iran, and they are very similar to each other in coloration, carination, and trichobotrial patterns. This morphometric study aimed to compare some of the important morphological characteristics in order to identify the key differences between these two species. A total of 45 morphological characters were measured using calipers and stereomicroscope, and 55 morphological characters and ratios (relative of length to width ratio of morphological characters of scorpions) were analyzed. The independent sample t-test in SPSS software (version 24) was used for the statistical analyses in this study. The mean total length, carapace width, length of fixed and moveable fingers, and chelicerae length of O. doriae were greater than those of O. bidentatus in our study area. The morphological measurements displayed a clear distinction between O. doriae and O. bidentatus in our study area; therefore, they can be used as morphological identification keys for distinguishing between these two species. Abstract The upper Benue River watershed is undergoing remarkable modifications due to man-made and natural phenomena. Hence, an evaluation is required to understand the hydrological process of the watershed for planning and management strategies. This study aimed to assess the morphometric characteristics and prioritize the upper Benue River watershed. The boundary of the watershed and sub-watersheds, as well as stream networks, was extracted from the digital elevation model (DEM) coupled with hydrological and topographic maps. Twenty-eight morphometric parameters under three categories, i.e. linear, areal, and relief aspects were computed and mapped. Findings from the study revealed that the watershed is a seventh stream order system characterized by a dendritic drainage pattern. The result also showed that 4821 streams were extracted with a cumulative length of 30,232.84 km. The hypsometric integral of the watershed was estimated to be 0.22, indicating that it is in the old stage. In the prioritization of the watershed, the morphometric variables were utilized to calculate and classify the compound factor. The result showed that sub-watersheds 12, 16, 18, 24, 26, and 27 were ranked as very high priority for which conservation measures are required to mitigate the risk of flood and erosion. The outcome of this study can be used by decision-makers for sustainable watershed management and planning.

This study was conducted to assess the effect of different levels of zinc hydroxide and zinc-glycine (Zn-Gly) on the performance, carcass quality, immunity, and morphometric of the small intestine. A total of 540 1-day-old Ross-308 broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 9 treatments each having 4 replicates of 15 birds in a 3 × 3 factorial design.
