Microalgae, micro-sized plant organisms, play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems. While many microalgae inhabit substrates or the bottom of water bodies, several types are planktonic. This study aimed to identify the types and abundance of microalgae in both sediment and water column habitats, as well as to analyze the environmental factors influencing their abundance. The research encompasses observations of water quality factors, microalgae abundance, relative abundance, diversity index, evenness index, and dominance index. Statistical analyses were using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). The study was conducted in May-June 2022, with bi-weekly sampling at three points within each location for two months. Microalgae identified in the coastal area of Probolinggo belong to the Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, and Chlorophyceae classes. The highest microalgae abundance in the sediment habitat was 58,472 ind/cm2, while in the water column was 4,118 ind/l. Diversity, evenness, and dominance indices in both sediment and water column habitats ranged from 1.93 to 2.61, 0.88 to 0.98, and 0.09 to 0.10, respectively. Plankton are promising ecological monitoring tool that responds quickly to any sort of aquatic ecological alteration, of which many of them are much susceptible to ecological variations. Therefore, monitoring shifts in plankton composition can indicate changes in water quality and aid to identify potential pollution sources. In the present study, the variation in plankton dynamics in relation to ecological variables were monitored in the freshwater zone of the Hooghly estuary from May 2020 to April 2021. The study was conducted in the interval of every six hours. i.e., at 6 A.M., 12 P.M., 6 P.M., and 12 A.M. The present finding revealed the occurrence of 54 phytoplankton and 20 zooplankton taxa/species. Diel variation revealed that among different time intervals, the highest abundance of phytoplankton was recorded 28,307 cells l−1 at 12 P.M, while the lowest was recorded 10,632 cells l−1 at 6 A.M. However, the highest zooplankton abundance was observed 804 ind l−1 at 6 A.M., and the lowest was recorded 156 ind l−1 at 6 P.M. The ANOVA (p < 0.05) analysis indicated significant diel variation for many planktonic genera. The CCA exhibited that most of the phytoplankton were influenced by multiple water quality variables such as temperature, turbidity, calcium, pH, salinity, DO, and nutrients. However, the majority of the zooplankton were affected by turbidity, total phosphorus, sulphate, calcium and available nitrogen. Significant seasonal variation in plankton composition has also been observed. Single-cell transcriptomics has the potential to provide novel insights into poorly studied microbial eukaryotes. Although several such technologies are available and benchmarked on mammalian cells, few have been tested on protists. Here, we applied a microarray single-cell sequencing (MASC-seq) technology, that generates microscope images of cells in parallel with capturing their transcriptomes, on three species representing important plankton groups with different cell structures; the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila, the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and the dinoflagellate Heterocapsa sp. Both the cell fixation and permeabilization steps were adjusted. For the ciliate and dinoflagellate, the number of transcripts of microarray spots with single cells were significantly higher than for background spots, and the overall expression patterns were correlated with that of bulk RNA, while for the much smaller diatom cells, it was not possible to separate single-cell transcripts from background. The MASC-seq method holds promise for investigating "microbial dark matter", although further optimizations are necessary to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plankton organisms are fundamental components of the earth's ecosystem. Zooplankton feeds on phytoplankton and is predated by fish and other aquatic animals, being at the core of the aquatic food chain. On the other hand, Phytoplankton has a crucial role in climate regulation, has produced almost 50% of the total oxygen in the atmosphere and it's responsible for fixing around a quarter of the total earth's carbon dioxide. Importantly, plankton can be regarded as a good indicator of environmental perturbations, as it can react to even slight environmental changes with corresponding modifications in morphology and behavior. At a population level, the biodiversity and the concentration of individuals of specific species may shift dramatically due to environmental changes. Thus, in this paper, we propose an anomaly detection-based framework to recognize heavy morphological changes in phytoplankton at a population level, starting from images acquired in situ. Given that an initial annotated dataset is available, we propose to build a parallel architecture training one anomaly detection algorithm for each available class on top of deep features extracted by a pre-trained Vision Transformer, further reduced in dimensionality with PCA. We later define global anomalies, corresponding to samples rejected by all the trained detectors, proposing to empirically identify a threshold based on global anomaly count over time as an indicator that can be used by field experts and institutions to investigate potential environmental perturbations. We use two publicly available datasets (WHOI22 and WHOI40) of grayscale microscopic images of phytoplankton collected with the Imaging FlowCytobot acquisition system to test the proposed approach, obtaining high performances in detecting both in-class and out-of-class samples. Finally, we build a dataset of 15 classes acquired by the WHOI across four years, showing that the proposed approach's ability to identify anomalies is preserved when tested on images of the same classes acquired across a timespan of years. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles (ZIF-8 NPs) are metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that have gained significant attention in various fields due to their unique properties. They have potential applications in drug delivery, gas storage, and catalysis. However, their increasing use raises concerns about their potential environmental impact. Our study evaluates the effects of ≈90 nm ZIF-8 NPs in two planktonic species, the green microalga Nannochloropsis oculata and the brine shrimp Artemia salina. After synthesis and characterization (SEM, EDS, BET, and DLS) of nanoporous ZIF-8 NPs, a growth inhibition test on microalgae (72 h) and acute immobilization test on instar I and II of Artemia nauplii (48 h) were conducted following, OECD 201 and ISO/TS 20787, respectively. The toxicity of ZIF-8 NPs to both species was time- and concentration-dependent. The 72-h median inhibitory concentration (IC50) of ZIF-8 NPs for N. oculata based on average specific growth rate and yield were calculated as 79.71 ± 8.55 mg L−1 and 51.73 ± 5.16 mg L−1, respectively. Also, the 48-h median effective concentration (EC50) of ZIF-8 NPs on immobilization rate of instar I and II were calculated as 175.09 ± 4.14 mg L−1 and 4.69 ± 0.34 mg L−1, respectively. Moreover, the swimming type of non-immobilized animals was affected by ZIF-8 NPs. These findings provide a good insight into the toxicity of nanoparticulate ZIF-8 to saltwater planktons and also confirm that instar II Artemia is more sensitive than instar I. This study demonstrated that ZIF-8 NPs, despite all their advantages, could have toxic effects on aquatic organisms. Priscilla Susan Bury, an amateur naturalist and illustrator, published a book in 1862 called "Figures of Remarkable Forms of Polycystins, or allied Organisms, in the Barbados Chalk Deposit." This book was the first of its kind to showcase the beauty of planktonic organisms, specifically radiolarians, through detailed illustrations. Bury sought advice from renowned naturalists and promoted the study of radiolarians through articles and exhibitions. The article also provides a brief overview of the discovery of radiolarians and Bury's personal life. The effectiveness of constructed wetlands (CWs) created to improve water quality has been demonstrated. However, their role in enhancing biodiversity, such as in plankton communities, is still understudied. To assess this, we analysed, over two years, the plankton of three structurally different CWs which are intermediaries between low-quality waters and a protected Mediterranean wetland (Albufera de València Natural Park). We estimated the alpha-diversity of each CW and the beta-diversity among their different sectors. In two CWs, the diversity decreased as water flowed from the Inlet (a species mix from anthropically disturbed environments) to the Outlet, due to natural assembly processes. In the other CW, as it received water dominated by a few species, the emerging assemblages increased the diversity. Moreover, comparing the three CWs, the most divergent communities were those in the outlets (due to the emergence of exclusive species, biovolume differences, etc.). Therefore, they contributed to beta-diversity as they acted as generators of communities, which were characterized by the loss of cyanobacteria and chlorophytes, the dominance of large copepods or cladocerans and the presence of unshared species. Spatial heterogeneity or "patchiness" of plankton distributions in the ocean has always been an attractive and challenging scientific issue to oceanographers. We focused on the accumulation and dynamic mechanism of the Acetes chinensis in the Lianyungang nearshore licensed fishing area. The Lagrangian frame approaches including the Lagrangian coherent structures theory, Lagrangian residual current, and Lagrangian particle-tracking model were applied to find the transport pathways and aggregation characteristics of Acetes chinensis. There exist some material transport pathways for Acetes chinensis passing through the licensed fishing area, and Acetes chinensis is easy to accumulate in the licensed fishing area. The main mechanism forming this distribution pattern is the local circulation induced by the nonlinear interaction of topography and tidal flow. Both the Lagrangian coherent structure analysis and the particle trajectory tracking indicate that Acetes chinensis in the licensed fishing area come from the nearshore estuary. Fire can lead to transitions between forest and grassland ecosystems and trigger positive feedbacks to climate warming by releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. Climate change is projected to increase the prevalence and severity of wildfires. However, fire effects on the fate and impact of terrestrial organic matter (i.e., terrestrial subsidies) in aquatic ecosystems are unclear. Here, we performed a gradient design experiment in freshwater pond mesocosms adding 15 different amounts of burned or unburned plant detritus and tracking the chronology of detritus effects at 10, 31, 59, and 89 days. We show terrestrial subsidies had time‐ and mass‐dependent, non‐linear impacts on ecosystem function that influenced dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ecosystem metabolism (net primary production and respiration), greenhouse gas concentrations (carbon dioxide [CO2], methane [CH4]), and trophic transfer. These impacts were shifted by fire treatment. Burning increased the elemental concentration of detritus (increasing %N, %P, %K), with cascading effects on ecosystem function. Mesocosms receiving burned detritus had lower [DOC] and [CO2] and higher dissolved oxygen (DO) through Day 59. Fire magnified the effects of plant detritus on aquatic ecosystem metabolism by stimulating photosynthesis and respiration at intermediate detritus‐loading through Day 89. The effect of loading on DO was similar for burned and unburned treatments (Day 10); however, burned‐detritus in the highest loading treatments led to sustained hypoxia (through Day 31), and long‐term destabilization of ecosystem metabolism through Day 89. In addition, fire affected trophic transfer by increasing autochthonous nitrogen source utilization and reducing the incorporation of 15N‐labeled detritus into plankton biomass, thereby reducing the flux of terrestrial subsidies to higher trophic levels. Our results indicate fire chemically transforms plant detritus and alters the role of aquatic ecosystems in processing and storing carbon. Nano-picoplankton are the dominant primary producers during the postupwelling period in St Helena Bay, South Africa. Their dynamics on short timescales are not well-understood and neither are the community composition, structure, and potential functionality of the surrounding microbiome. Samples were collected over five consecutive days in March 2018 from three depths (1, 25, and 50 m) at a single sampling station in St Helena Bay. There was clear depth-differentiation between the surface and depth in both diversity and function throughout the sampling period for the archaea, bacteria, and eukaryotes. Daily difference in eukaryote diversity, was more pronounced at 1 and 25 m with increased abundances of Syndiniales and Bacillariophyta. Surface waters were dominated by photosynthetic and photoheterotrophic microorganisms, while samples at depth were linked to nitrogen cycling processes, with high abundances of nitrifiers and denitrifiers. Strong depth gradients found in the nutrient transporters for ammonia were good indicators of measured uptake rates. This study showed that nano-picoplankton dynamics were driven by light availability, nutrient concentrations, carbon biomass, and oxygenation. The nano-picoplankton help sustain ecosystem functioning in St Helena Bay through their ecological roles, which emphasizes the need to monitor this size fraction of the plankton. Reservoir has many benefits such as providing a source of drinking water and food from capture fisheries which can be categorized as ecosystem services. This paper aims to see how the environmental conditions of Jatigede Reservoir waters produce provisioning services. The environmental conditions analyzed in this study are physical, chemical, biological, and water quality status using the Storet method. The results showed that in the rainy season, the environmental condition of Jatigede Reservoir was heavily polluted for class 1 (not good for drinking water sources) and also heavily polluted for fisheries (class 2 and class 3). The diversity index of phytoplankton (0.9681.540) and zooplankton (1.559-1.989) showed a lightly to heavily polluted condition. This can affect the results of ecosystem services which show that the results of capture fisheries in rainy season there are 8 types of fish. In the dry season, the condition of Jatigede Reservoir, as seen from the designation of drinking water sources, was heavily polluted, which showed that the benefits as a source of drinking water were less suitable for consumption. Jatigede Reservoir water quality status in class 2 fisheries designation is heavily polluted and class 3 is moderately polluted. Judging from the phytoplankton index (0.589-1.395) and zooplankton index (1.161-2.093), the water conditions in the dry season were heavily polluted to unpolluted, this can be seen from the many types of fish caught, such as 17 species. Paringin District is one of the coal mining areas in South Kalimantan with the exploitation method of open pit mining. This activity opens rock layers containing sulfur, reacting with water and oxygen, spreading sulfide acid into the environment. Analysis of the water quality of the Post-mining Lake in Paringin District is needed based on the biological parameters. The objective aims to analyze the water quality of the Post-mining Lake, Paringin District, based on plankton's abundance, diversity, and dominance. This research was located in Post-mining Lake, PT. Adaro Indonesia. Data were taken at three sampling points in the pit pond and three depths. Data was taken from 2019 to 2021 using plankton net and analyzed using the enumeration method. The data was processed using the diversity index, dominance index, and saprobic index. Phytoplankton and Zooplankton abundance were dependent on three different depths (p-value>0.05). The most abundant phytoplankton species in all stations was Oscillatoria sp. (>90%) while Nauplius sp. (>30%) for zooplankton. Rainfall in the study area affected the number of individual species very weakly. The highest dominance value of phytoplankton and zooplankton was recorded around the end of 2019 to early 2020 as well as a saprobic index and diversity. Crustacea class considerably exists in all sites, which is Nauplius sp. and Daphnia sp. This situation proved there was a recovery of the plankton population in the lake, no algae blooming and a balance between nutrients and plankton population. The current investigation was conducted on hydrobiological parameters and plankton diversity in the Yamuna River at Okhla Barrage. The various water quality parameters were investigated, and found that the pH ranged from 7.35±0.02 to 8.10±0.09, temperature varied from 20.79±0.02 to 32.29±0.05!, dissolved oxygen (DO) levels range from 1.72±0.08 to 3.6±0.12 mg/l, total dissolved solids (TDS) ranged from 179.625±36.605 to 382.75±0.875 mg/L, electrical conductivity (EC) went from 759.25±9.37 to 1527.25±3.47 μs/cm and free CO2 levels varied from 8.4±0.93 to 10.5±0.27 mg/L. There are 51 genera of plankton, including 31 genera of phytoplankton and 20 genera of zooplankton. Phytoplanktons are categorized into four major groups: Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, and Euglenophyceae, and zooplankton belonging to Protozoa, Rotifera, Copepoda and Cladocera. The phytoplankton population exhibited fluctuations, reaching its peak in October (13,000 per litre) and its lowest point in July (10,400 per litre). On the other hand, the highest zooplankton population was recorded in October, reaching 11,600 per litre, while the lowest count was observed in August, with only 5,200 zooplankton per litre. Regarding diversity indices, the highest and lowest values for phytoplankton occurred in July (1.054) and August (0.849), respectively. The Lempuk fish (Gobiopterus spp.) is a kind of fish that is exclusively found and inhabits the Ranu Grati area in Pasuruan Regency. The Lempuk fish is a prominent tourist attraction and is frequently targeted for fishing due to its significant economic significance. This leads to excessive exploitation, resulting in population decline and posing a threat to its sustainability. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the abundance and type of plankton, as well as its relationship with the study of stomach contents, to gather supporting data for future domestication efforts. The sampling was conducted three times, with a two-week gap, at five distinct sites. The research employed a quantitative-descriptive approach and the sampling a purposive sample technique. The research findings revealed the presence of four distinct classes with 20 different species in the phytoplankton community, as well as four distinct classes with 12 genera in the zooplankton community. The study of stomach conten this fish shows, primary diet of this fish, as shown by their propenderence index, consists of phytoplankton from the Asterionella species and zooplankton from the Daphnia genus. Identification of phytoplankton trapped in the gills suggests initial selectivity and food preference in marine bivalve molluscs. In this study, pre-ingested phytoplankton in the gills of Mytella strigata were determined and compared to the existing phytoplankton in the waters of three sites in the Philippines (Pangasinan, Cavite, and Bataan). Pre-ingested phytoplankton of M. strigata varied with size (p<0.05) and site (p<0.05). Coscinodiscus spp. and Skeletonema spp. were most abundant across sizes (<20mm, 20-40mm, and >40mm) and sites. Particle selection observed in the gills suggests food preference for centric diatoms such as Coscinodiscus spp., Skeletonema spp., and Navicula spp. The pre-ingestion of these diatoms ranged from 26% to 46% of the total phytoplankton composition in the waters of different sites. In the marine ecosystem, phytoplankton plays a vital role as the primary supplier of oxygen, contributing to 50% of the total oxygen production. Not only does it serve as a significant source of food for other species, but it also sustains life in the ocean. However, the rising ocean temperatures caused by global warming have severely hindered the ability of phytoplankton to generate oxygen. Furthermore, fishes are crucial consumers of oxygen within the marine ecosystem. This research paper presents a model that intricately connects the dynamics of oxygen, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish using the Caputo fractional derivative. The model aims to examine the impact of global warming on the collective dynamics by considering the relationship between the rate of oxygen generation, temperature, and time. The paper establishes the existence and uniqueness of solutions and also analyzes the stability of equilibrium points. The evaluation of the hydrography and biogeochemistry of the Adriatic Sea over the last century was summarized in this review to point out any changes in river runoff and provide an overview of the cause and effect of these trends on marine ecosystems. Although several rivers flow into the Adriatic, the most affected area is the northern Adriatic, where the Po River loads into the basin half of the total freshwater input, carrying river runoff and causing algal blooms and hypoxia phenomena. These fresh waters of the northern Adriatic flow predominantly along the entire western side, reaching the southernmost part of the basin up to the Mediterranean Sea. Here, and in the whole basin, variations in river runoff and nutrient concentration have been observed through the years. Starting from 1960 until the end of the century, an increase in nutrient discharge and phytoplankton activity was reported, with negative repercussions on local fisheries, species richness, and recreational activities within the basin. However, a recent decrease in river inflow has been observed along the coastal belt, which can trigger negative consequences for the food web of the marine ecosystem. These trends, more broadly, corroborate the vulnerability of the Adriatic Sea and stress the importance of implementing strategies for the defense of the relevant ecosystems within its confines. A dataset of nearly 400 measurements of the particle size distribution (PSD) compiled from the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic Oceans is used to examine variability in the magnitude and shape of the PSD, and to characterize the partitioning of particle number, cross-sectional area, and volume concentration among defined size intervals. The results indicate that the relative contributions of three size classes based upon the pico-, nano-, and microplankton size range exhibit substantial changes among measures of particle size and between oceanic environments. The single-slope power law model commonly employed to characterize the PSD in aquatic studies is demonstrated to have significant limitations in capturing the complexity of PSD shapes observed for natural particle assemblages, and in consequence poorly predicts the relative contributions of these different size intervals. We show that specific percentile diameters derived from the cumulative distributions of particle size are strongly correlated with the contributions of these three size classes, and that these non-parametric descriptors of the cumulative distribution provide superior performance for estimating their contributions while requiring no assumption of underlying PSD shape. A comparison of these predictive relationships with independent field measurements suggests that this approach is generally robust for particle assemblages representing a wide diversity of marine environments.

BackgroundOceanic microbiomes play a pivotal role in the global carbon cycle and are central to the transformation and recycling of carbon and energy in the ocean's interior. SAR324 is a ubiquitous but poorly understood uncultivated clade of Deltaproteobacteria that inhabits the entire water column, from ocean surface waters to its deep interior. Although some progress has been made in elucidating potential metabolic traits of SAR324 in the dark ocean, very little is known about the ecology and the metabolic capabilities of this group in the euphotic and twilight zones. To investigate the comparative genomics, ecology, and physiological potential of the SAR324 clade, we examined the distribution and variability of key genomic features and metabolic pathways in this group from surface waters to the abyss in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, one of the largest biomes on Earth.ResultsWe leveraged a pangenomic ecological approach, combining spatio-temporally resolved single-amplified genome, metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic datasets. The data revealed substantial genomic diversity throughout the SAR324 clade, with distinct depth and temporal distributions that clearly differentiated ecotypes. Phylogenomic subclade delineation, environmental distributions, genomic feature similarities, and metabolic capacities revealed strong congruence. The four SAR324 ecotypes delineated in this study revealed striking divergence from one another with respect to their habitat-specific metabolic potentials. The ecotypes living in the dark or twilight oceans shared genomic features and metabolic capabilities consistent with a sulfur-based chemolithoautotrophic lifestyle. In contrast, those inhabiting the sunlit ocean displayed higher plasticity energy-related metabolic pathways, supporting a presumptive photoheterotrophic lifestyle. In epipelagic SAR324 ecotypes, we observed the presence of two types of proton-pumping rhodopsins, as well as genomic, transcriptomic, and ecological evidence for active photoheterotrophy, based on xanthorhodopsin-like light-harvesting proteins.ConclusionsCombining pangenomic and both metagenomic and metatranscriptomic profiling revealed a striking divergence in the vertical distribution, genomic composition, metabolic potential, and predicted lifestyle strategies of geographically co-located members of the SAR324 bacterial clade. The results highlight the utility of metapangenomic approaches employed across environmental gradients, to decipher the properties and variation in function and ecological traits of specific phylogenetic clades within complex microbiomes. Endosymbioses have shaped the evolutionary trajectory of life and remain ecologically important. Investigating oceanic photosymbioses can illuminate how algal endosymbionts are energetically exploited by their heterotrophic hosts and inform on putative initial steps of plastid acquisition in eukaryotes. By combining three-dimensional subcellular imaging with photophysiology, carbon flux imaging, and transcriptomics, we show that cell division of endosymbionts (Phaeocystis) is blocked within hosts (Acantharia) and that their cellular architecture and bioenergetic machinery are radically altered. Transcriptional evidence indicates that a nutrient-independent mechanism prevents symbiont cell division and decouples nuclear and plastid division. As endosymbiont plastids proliferate, the volume of the photosynthetic machinery volume increases 100-fold in correlation with the expansion of a reticular mitochondrial network in close proximity to plastids. Photosynthetic efficiency tends to increase with cell size, and photon propagation modeling indicates that the networked mitochondrial architecture enhances light capture. This is accompanied by 150-fold higher carbon uptake and up-regulation of genes involved in photosynthesis and carbon fixation, which, in conjunction with a ca.15-fold size increase of pyrenoids demonstrates enhanced primary production in symbiosis. Mass spectrometry imaging revealed major carbon allocation to plastids and transfer to the host cell. As in most photosymbioses, microalgae are contained within a host phagosome (symbiosome), but here, the phagosome invaginates into enlarged microalgal cells, perhaps to optimize metabolic exchange. This observation adds evidence that the algal metamorphosis is irreversible. Hosts, therefore, trigger and benefit from major bioenergetic remodeling of symbiotic microalgae with potential consequences for the oceanic carbon cycle. Unlike other photosymbioses, this interaction represents a so-called cytoklepty, which is a putative initial step toward plastid acquisition.

Berdasarkan hasil observasi selama praktikum identifikasi plankton dari sistem perairan yang dilaksanakan oleh mahasiswa di Laboratorium IPA Terpadu dijumpai fakta bahwa mahasiswa mengalami banyak kesulitan dalam identifikasi plankton tersebut karena keterbatasan media buku penunjang yang tersedia. Buku panduan identifikasi plankton yang digunakan saat ini merupakan buku pendamping untuk mengamati plankton dalam sampel perairan secara mikroskopis. Akan tetapi masih terdapat kekurangan karena tidak disertai gambar pembanding beserta klasifikasinya. Hal ini menyebabkan hasil praktikum kurang sesuai seperti yang diharapkan. Diperlukan buku panduan identifikasi plankton dalam perairan yang disertai gambar real perbesaran mikroskop dan keterangan klasifikasi yang mudah diakses mahasiswa. Berdasarkan permasalah ini peneliti mencoba membuat panduan identifikasi plankton dengan memanfaatkan aplikasi Quick Response (QR) Code untuk memuat informasi lengkap dari berbagai klasifikasi plankton yang dapat diakses menggunakan smartphone (gadget).Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuat panduan identifikasi plankton dengan disertai QR code yang mudah diakses oleh mahasiswa sebagai alat bantu dalam melakukan identifikasi plankton serta dapat dilakukan dimanapun dan tidak harus dilakukan di laboratorium. Selain itu sebagai sarana pendukung dalam penyediaan panduan praktikum bagi laboratorium IPA Terpadu khususnya ilmu lingkungan. Dari penelitian ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan keterampilan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan mikroskop, serta mengidentifikasi, dan mengklasifikasikan jenis plankton.

The themed section "Mixotrophs and mixoplankton: conceptual integration into aquatic research" in the Journal of Plankton Research explores the evolution of understanding around the trophic roles of ocean plankton. The term "mixoplankton" was coined in the 1980s to describe organisms capable of both phago- and phototrophy. The ocean biological pump is the mechanism by which carbon and nutrients are transported to depth. As such, the biological pump is critical in the partitioning of carbon dioxide between the ocean and atmosphere, and the rate at which that carbon can be sequestered through burial in marine sediments. How the structure and function of planktic ecosystems in the ocean govern the strength and efficiency of the biological pump and its resilience to disruption are poorly understood. The aftermath of the impact at the Cretaceous/Palaeogene (K/Pg) boundary provides an ideal opportunity to address these questions as both the biological pump and marine plankton size and diversity were fundamentally disrupted. The excellent fossil record of planktic foraminifera as indicators of pelagic-biotic recovery combined with carbon isotope records tracing biological pump behaviour, show that the recovery of ecological traits (diversity, size and photosymbiosis) occurred much later (approx. 4.3 Ma) than biological pump recovery (approx. 1.8 Ma). We interpret this decoupling of diversity and the biological pump as an indication that ecosystem function had sufficiently recovered to drive an effective biological pump, at least regionally in the South Atlantic.

Despite being the largest estuary on the west coast of North America, no in-depth survey of microbial communities in San Francisco Bay (SFB) waters currently exists. In this study, we analyze bacterioplankton and archaeoplankton communities at several taxonomic levels and spatial extents (i.e., North versus South Bay) to reveal patterns in alpha and beta diversity. We assess communities using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene in 177 water column samples collected along a 150-km transect over a 2-year monthly time-series. In North Bay, the microbial community is strongly structured by spatial salinity changes while in South Bay seasonal variations dominate community dynamics. Along the steep salinity gradient in North Bay, we find that operational taxonomic units (OTUs; 97% identity) have higher site specificity than at coarser taxonomic levels and turnover ("species" replacement) is high, revealing a distinct brackish community (in oligo-, meso-, and polyhaline samples) from fresh and marine end-members. At coarser taxonomic levels (e.g., phylum, class), taxa are broadly distributed across salinity zones (i.e., present/abundant in a large number of samples) and brackish communities appear to be a mix of fresh and marine communities. We also observe variations in brackish communities between samples with similar salinities, likely related to differences in water residence times between North and South Bay. Throughout SFB, suspended particulate matter is positively correlated with richness and influences changes in beta diversity. Within several abundant groups, including the SAR11 clade (comprising up to 30% of reads in a sample), OTUs appear to be specialized to a specific salinity range. Some other organisms also showed pronounced seasonal abundance, including Synechococcus, Ca. Actinomarina, and Nitrosopumilus-like OTUs. Overall, this study represents the first in-depth spatiotemporal survey of SFB microbial communities and provides insight into how planktonic microorganisms have specialized to different niches along the salinity gradient.

A study of diatoms in eight watercourses (four spawning rivers and four streams) in the area of the Ozernovsky Mining and Metallurgical Complex (MMC) on the Kamchatka Peninsula was carried out for the first time. A total of 174 taxa were identified, and a comparative analysis of periphyton species diversity at the sampling stations was carried out. A new species for science was proposed: Gomphonema anissimovae Glushchenko, Kezlya & Kulikovskiy sp. nov. The composition and quantitative characteristics of plankton were analysed only in samples collected from rivers. It was shown that all rivers are oligotrophic in terms of phytoplankton biomass. The work includes lists of taxa with indication of their abundance, as well as illustrative material of found diatom taxa, which will provide an opportunity to monitor changes in planktonic and periphyton microalgae communities in the studied watercourses in the context of potentially high anthropogenic load from industry.

The abundance distribution and species richness of encysted plankton have been investigated in the bottom sediments of the Taranto Marine System (southern Italy) for contributing to the understanding of plankton dynamics in a confined coastal area. This confined area is characterized by four contiguous basins with different degrees of confinement. The investigation was carried out in the fall season with the aim to intercept a period of rich cyst production from the plankton before overwintering. From the analysis of a total of 36 sediment samples, from 12 sample sites, the highest abundance of cysts and species richness were registered in the confined part of the system. A total of 103 cyst morphotypes have been recognized in the whole area, with highest abundances and taxa richness in the most confined stations. These results, suggesting a benthic-pelagic exchange of living matter, more intense in confined environments than in the open sea, highlight the necessity of (i) including the analysis of sediment cyst banks in studies of plankton dynamics, and (ii) to consider the role of confined areas, where the variability of environmental conditions favours a higher planktonic biodiversity in the sediments than in the water column.

We evaluated the main environmental factors (abiotic and biotic) driving the phytoplankton community in a shallow tropical reservoir located in an environmentally protected area. Phytoplankton samples were collected from the surface and bottom of the reservoir. The phytoplankton samples were later identified at the species level, and the species were further assigned to morphology-based functional groups (MBFGs). Zooplankton were sampled through vertical haul, communities were identified to species level, and functional diversity was estimated based on community-weighted means (CWM). Phytoplankton MBFGs IV, V, and VI contributed the most to the biomass under high light availability coupled with low nutrient availability. Potentially toxic cyanobacteria from MBFG III were observed during thermal stratification. Hydraulic mixing plays a crucial role in reducing the phytoplankton biomass during the warmer/rainy season. Cyclopoid copepods accounted for more than 83% of the zooplankton biomass. There was a weak but significant effect of zooplankton functional diversity on phytoplankton functional diversity, mainly because of the dominance of small zooplankton. Altogether, our findings suggest that environmental filtering plays a greater role than zooplankton grazing in phytoplankton community structure in this shallow tropical reservoir.

Terrestrial input to marine and freshwater ecosystems colors the water yellow-brown, causing a phenomenon called “brownification”. The effect of brownification on the marine pelagic microbial food web was studied in the oligotrophic eastern Mediterranean in June 2021 by adding HuminFeed in a 15-day mesocosm experiment with 2 treatments: Control (C, no addition) and HuminFeed (HF, single dose of HuminFeed, 2 mg L-1); and 3 replicates per treatment. HuminFeed caused shading, leading to a decrease in the abundance of photo-autotrophic organisms (cyanobacteria Synechococcus and diatoms). Bacteria were positively affected by the HF addition (mainly in terms of production rather than abundance), benefiting either directly from the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) contained in HuminFeed or indirectly from the trophic cascade through the food web. Despite the decrease in HF bacterial abundance during the experiment, an increase in both the high nucleic acid containing bacteria% and heterotrophic bacterial production were observed, suggesting higher activity at the single cell level. In the HF treatment, the increased abundance of dinoflagellates observed could be due to either a dominance of mixotrophic species or a release from predation by copepods. Both ciliates and copepods were severely impacted by HuminFeed, showing lower abundance and distorted forms (ciliates) and reduced reproductive potential (copepods). In conclusion, in the ultraoligotrophic eastern Mediterranean, the simulated brownification negatively affected autotrophs and top predators while benefiting bacteria, thus indicating a shift in the structure of the plankton food web.

Despite management efforts, anthropogenic nutrient enrichments continue to enhance phytoplankton blooms worldwide. Release of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds not only provides surplus of nutrients but also disbalances their stoichiometry. Declines in the relative availability of dissolved silicon might induce limitation in diatoms, major primary producers with silicified shells. We studied experimentally how nutrient enrichment and resulting decline in dissolved silicon to nitrogen ratios (Si:N) affect the structure and functioning of natural plankton communities. Nitrate was added to create a range of Si:N ratios and phosphate was supplied in Redfield ratio to nitrogen. We also manipulated copepod abundance to understand the top-down effects on communities experiencing nutrient enrichment. Nitrogen and phosphorus additions resulted in a steep phytoplankton biomass increase, followed by a post-bloom decline. Phytoplankton bloom biomass was higher in high nitrogen treatments but during the post-bloom period this trend switched. Biomass was sustained longer in high Si:N treatments, indicating that silicon limitation terminates the bloom. Many diatom species did not benefit from nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment and diatom dominance ceased below Si:N of 0.4:1. Under high grazing pressure, silicate was taken up faster suggesting that silicification is important in diatom defense. Copepods shaped plankton communities via feeding on dinoflagellates, chlorophytes and the diatom Skeletonema costatum but there was no significant effect of nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment on copepod abundance. Our results, combined with previous studies, show that while nutrient concentrations define the total phytoplankton bloom biomass, resource ratios are important in sustaining biomass and determining community structure and composition.

Plankton are widely considered to be at the mercy of ocean currents, even after decades of research revealing that plankton regulate dispersal by positioning themselves in surface and bottom currents flowing in different directions. The degree of effectiveness of these behaviors remains controversial, because tiny plankters cannot be tracked at sea. Here, we experimentally tested the effectiveness of 3 vertical positioning behaviors in nature by developing a biomimetic robot that emulates them. We conducted a challenging test by deploying them in complex circulation during strong upwelling winds and wind relaxation and reversal events. Behavior alone dramatically affected transport. Transport trajectories of robots with 3 different behaviors diverged markedly while those sharing the same behavior were very similar. Moreover, all 3 behaviors produced trajectories that matched previously modeled projections during both upwelling and relaxation conditions at the study site: shallow plankton disperse far, deep plankton move little, and plankton migrating from depth during the day to the surface at night travel an intermediate distance. The ability of weakly swimming plankton to control their fate and replenish populations in a dynamic ocean is of central importance to the ecology and evolution of marine life and to the management of resources in a changing climate.

Model representations of plankton structure and dynamics have consequences for a broad spectrum of ocean processes. Here we focus on the representation of zooplankton and their grazing dynamics in such models. It remains unclear whether phytoplankton community composition, growth rates, and spatial patterns in plankton ecosystem models are especially sensitive to the specific means of representing zooplankton grazing. We conduct a series of numerical experiments that explicitly address this question. We focus our study on the form of the functional response to changes in prey density, including the formulation of a grazing refuge. We use a contemporary biogeochemical model based on continuum size-structured organization, including phytoplankton diversity, coupled to a physical model of the California Current System. This region is of particular interest because it exhibits strong spatial gradients. We find that small changes in grazing refuge formulation across a range of plausible functional forms drive fundamental differences in spatial patterns of plankton concentrations, species richness, pathways of grazing fluxes, and underlying seasonal cycles. An explicit grazing refuge, with refuge prey concentration dependent on grazers' body size, using allometric scaling, is likely to provide more coherent plankton ecosystem dynamics compared to classic formulations or size-independent threshold refugia. We recommend that future plankton ecosystem models pay particular attention to the grazing formulation and implement a threshold refuge incorporating size-dependence, and we call for a new suite of experimental grazing studies.

While freshwater inflow has been a major focus of resource management in estuaries, including the upper San Francisco Estuary, there is a growing interest in using focused flow actions to maximize benefits for specific regions, habitats, and species. As a test of this concept, in summer 2016, we used a managed flow pulse to target an ecologically important region: a freshwater tidal slough complex (Cache Slough Complex–CSC). Our goal was to improve estuarine habitat by increasing net flows through CSC to enhance downstream transport of lower trophic-level resources, an important driver for fishes such as the endangered Delta Smelt Hypomesus transpacificus. We used regional water infrastructure to direct 18.5 million m³ of Sacramento River flow into its adjacent Yolo Bypass floodplain, where the pulse continued through CSC. Simulations using a 3-D hydrodynamic model (UnTRIM) indicated that the managed flow pulse had a large effect on the net flow of water through Yolo Bypass, and between CSC and further downstream. Multiple water quality constituents (specific conductivity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients [NO₃ + NO₂, NH₄, PO₄]) varied across the study region, and showed a strong response to the flow pulse. In addition, the lower Sacramento River had increased phytoplankton biomass and improved food quality indices (estimated from long-chain essential fatty acids) after the flow pulse. The managed flow pulse resulted in increased densities of zooplankton (copepods, cladocerans) demonstrating potential advection from upper floodplain channels into the target CSC and Sacramento River regions. This study was conducted during a single year, which may have had unique characteristics; however, we believe that our study is an instructive example of how a relatively modest change in net flows can generate measurable changes in ecologically relevant metrics, and how an adaptive management action can help inform resource management.
