ALL- Ready is a Coordination and Support Action (CSA) funded by the European Commission (EC) with the aim of preparing a framework for a future European network of Living Labs (LL) and Research Infrastructur es (RI) that will enable the transition towards agroecology throughout Europe. Based on the premise that agroecology can strengthen the sustainability a n d r e s ili e n c e o f f a r m i n g s y s t e m s , t h e p r o j e c t w ill c o n t r i b u t e t o a d d r e s s i n g t h e m u l t i p l e challenges that they are facing today including climate change, loss of biodiversity, dwindling r e s o u r c e s , d e g r a d a t i o n o f s o il a n d w a t e r q u a li t y , a s w e ll a s t h e s o c i a l a n d e c o n o m i c dimension s of sustainable and resilient agroecosystems.To build the framework of the future European network of living labs and research infrastructures that will enable the transition towards agroecology, we first pointed out the main transformations and changes of paradigms associated with agroecology, then mapped what is necessary for agroecology transition, before specifying what is expected from living labs and research infrastructures to accelerate transition.To outline what is necessary for the agroecosystem and agri-food chain to move towards agroecology, we synthesised scientific literature (reviews and policy papers) on agroecology principles into four mind-maps: values, categories of activities and of policy incentives, and competences and skills. The four mind maps were submitted to stakeholder evaluation and inputs, then translated into synthetic tables. The main characteristics of agroecology LLs and RIs proposed according to the picture formed by the four mind maps are shown in the tables herein. A glossary has been collectively established as an outcome of this deliverable.

The overarching goal of ENVRI-FAIR is for all participating RIs to improve their FAIRness and prepare the connection of their data repositories and services to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). With the development of FAIR implementations from the participating RIs and integrated services among the environmental subdomains, these data and services will be brought together at a higher level (for the entire cluster), providing more efficient services for researchers and policymakers. This deliverable reports the efforts WP7 contributed to the development of common FAIRness goals. The objective of this task is to provide co-development support driven by an implementation plan that identified by each subdomain, joint use cases among RIs or subdomains, and other needs identified during the project.

The FAIR principles provide guidance for improving Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability of digital resources. There is a distinct need to explore whether original FAIR principles can be applied to research information and what is needed to make research information FAIR. In the Ukrainian-German cooperation project FAIRIO ("FAIR research Information in Open infrastructures") we conducted a series of online workshops with experts on research information and FAIR Guiding Principles we discussed each of the FAIR principles on their viability for scholarly metadata. In this presentation we will outline the main discussion points for each of the principles. We will highlight findings that are relevant for FAIR research information from an institutional perspective, like usage of open licenses, open standards, and persistent identifiers (PID). We will show high-level criteria on how to foster FAIR research information from the perspective of multiple stakeholders (funders, research institutions etc.), with a special focus on research information systems. Designed criteria are supposed to enable transparency, reproducibility and enhance propensity for reusability of research information. We hope that our report will provide perspective on the way towards comprehensive FAIR principles for research information in open infrastructures.

The document intends to provide recommendations for exploiting Research Infrastructures in Horizon Europe (HE), suggesting measures for the various aspects of the new Research Programme. The present document, edited in the frame of the related APRE members Working Group, intends to provide recommendations for exploiting Research Infrastructures in Horizon Europe (HE). The first section of the document is devoted to the UE Framework Programmes: on one side, Horizon Europe, and the opportunities it can offer to the Research Infrastructures. On the other, the analysis of the participation rate of the Research Infrastructures (taking the already established ERICs as a sample) in all Pillars of Horizon2020 Programme can represent a reliable benchmarking element. The key idea is to identify key areas of intervention to propose specific measures for promoting the participation of the Research Infrastructures in all areas of the new Horizon Europe Programme. Research Infrastructures have played a key role in Horizon 2020 for the consolidation of the European Research Area; this could continue promoting policy actions able to leverage their potential and impact. In particular, the document addresses the relevance that Research Infrastructures have in implementing the Open Science and International Cooperation policies. On a more operational level, the active promotion of Research Infrastructures in HE can be implemented through specific provisions in the Rules for Participation concerning both legal and financial aspects. Actions for facilitating indirect participation are also explored. The document sets different suggested measures for the various aspects of the new Research Programme. Such recommendations will be disseminated to different targets such as the National Contact Points for HE, National Delegates for HE, the EC and (Directorates and Units) ESFRI, Experts groups, etc...

The integration of renewable energy resources - as key enablers for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the power systems - has increased over the past years and led to higher complexity of electric power systems. The increased availability of advanced automation and communication technology, along with novel intelligent solutions for system operation has transformed the traditional power system into a cyber-physical energy system - a smart grid. In this context research and technology development are important to turn the existing energy infrastructure into a sustainable one. A major role in all these developments are research infrastructures in the domain of power and energy systems. This presentation provides an overview of achievements, experiences and lessons learned from European smart grid and distributed energy resources research infrastructure projects gained over more than a decade so far.

The Portage Network Research Intelligence Expert Group (RIEG) gathers information on the state of research data management (RDM) in Canada for a variety of topics through the development and oversight of targeted studies to gather supporting evidence. To set priorities for RIEG, a high-level roadmap was created to bridge gaps in our knowledge about RDM practices, developments, communities, and policies in Canada. Two key gaps were identified in the Canadian RDM knowledge: 1) information related to RDM policies and strategic planning within research organizations and post-secondary institutions, and 2) a deeper understanding of institutional capacity, local capacity and national capacity. In order to bridge these gaps, two surveys were developed to evaluate how Canadian research institutions are preparing to support the various needs of their research communities. The first survey evaluated the progress and challenges of 63 Canadian research institutions in developing institutional strategies for RDM, which is expected to be a forthcoming requirement from Canada’s national funding agencies. The second survey investigated how 85 Canadian research institutions are developing and allocating organizational, infrastructure, fiscal and human resources to develop and support RDM services. The survey also assessed how resources and services are being coordinated by multiple units within the institution, and aligned with regional and national efforts. Survey results reveal a range of barriers, challenges, and accelerators that should be addressed to support the on-going development of RDM capacity in Canadian research institutions. Results also provide a benchmark for Canadian research institutions to develop national and related policy and infrastructure. This presentation will provide an analysis of survey results, highlighting key areas of progress and difficulty within the Canadian research community at large, and propose a series of recommendations for stakeholders to address some of the ongoing challenges facing research communities as they incorporate RDM into the research process.

The overarching goal of ENVRI-FAIR is that all participating research infrastructures (RIs) will improve their FAIRness and become ready for connection of their data repositories and services to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). Deliverable 9.1 has reported on the roadmap of the RIs in the marine subdomain towards improving their FAIRness. It presented the approach of using FAIR questionnaires (together with WP5) to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each RI and a first indicative set of activities to improve identified weaknesses or gaps. After formulation in Deliverable D9.2 of implementation plans for mitigating these gaps during the next phase of the ENVRI-FAIR project, the RIs from the marine subdomain have specified in Deliverable D9.3 the technical services and interfaces to be implemented at RI level and have undertaken the implementation. The RI services will be demonstrated in D9.4 (M27) and will be operational for EOSC operations in D9.5 (M36). The present deliverable D9.6 is linked to Task 9.8 going from M24 to M48 and aiming to demonstrate the marine subdomain FAIRness. Here the This document D9.6 describes the technical specifications that will be necessary for the Marine EOV product Version 1 and Version 2 to run in 2021 and 2022.

Research infrastructures have an ever greater presence in both the Humanities and Cultural Heritage Studies. Scholars and information professionals working in the fields of research libraries, archives, and information play a crucial role as users and providers in cultivating the kind of world-class research that today increasingly relies on the use of these digital research infrastructures. Therefore, their continuous professional development is essential for them to be able to reap the benefits available from the ever-changing field of eHumanities and eHeritage research infrastructures, a mission that is at the heart of the Training team of the Horizon 2020 funded project PARTHENOS (“Pooling Activities, Resources and Tools for Heritage e-Research, Optimization and Synergies”). This paper describes the “PARTHENOS eHumanities and eHeritage Webinar Series”. These five live and interactive seminars delivered via the internet represent an introductory training programme that focuses on the professional development and capacity building needs and requirements of (digital) humanities and cultural heritage scholars, as well as of information specialists who work for digital humanities and digital heritage infrastructures. Using the PARTHENOS Webinar Series as a case study of the development and delivery of research infrastructure-focussed professional development, the paper outlines the intellectual, educational, and practical context in which the PARTHENOS Webinar Series was conceived, the syllabus used for the initial run of the series, and the analysis of the data collection exercises conducted after the first five webinars, especially the feedback collected from both the trainees and the trainers (online survey and open questions study), and it discusses possibilities for improvement. In the conclusion, the paper places the insights from the PARTHENOS webinars in the context of the potential of webinars for research infrastructure training. It argues that in order to reap their full potential for research infrastructures as training instrument as well as instruments to gain insights in user requirements, new developments, and for community building, further theoretical grounding, professionalization, and on-going analysis of their effectiveness is needed.

Up until today research in various educational and linguistic domains such as learner corpus research, writing research, or second language acquisition has produced a substantial amount of research data in the form of L1 and L2 learner corpora. However, the multitude of individual solutions combined with domain-inherent obstacles in data sharing have so far hampered comparability, reusability and reproducibility of data and research results. In this article, we present work in creating a digital infrastructure for L1 and L2 learner corpora and populating it with data collected in the past. We embed our infrastructure efforts in the broader field of infrastructures for scientific research, drawing from technical solutions and frameworks from research data management, among which the FAIR guiding principles for data stewardship. We share our experiences from integrating some L1 and L2 learner corpora from concluded projects into the infrastructure while trying to ensure compliance with the FAIR principles and the standards we established for reproducibility, discussing how far research data that has been collected in the past can be made comparable, reusable and reproducible. Our results show that some basic needs for providing comparable and reusable data are covered by existing general infrastructure solutions and can be exploited for domain-specific infrastructures such as the one presented in this article. Other aspects need genuinely domain-driven approaches. The solutions found for the corpora in the presented infrastructure can only be a preliminary attempt, and further community involvement would be needed to provide templates and models acknowledged and promoted by the community. Furthermore, forward-looking data management would be needed starting from the beginning of new corpus creation projects to ensure that all requirements for FAIR data can be met.

Cooperation is central to DARIAH’s conceptualisation of both optimally efficient and scientifically useful infrastructure. Wider integration produces, in the long run, greater strength and coverage, but this integration has its limits, as the specific needs of a given community cannot always be met through broad spectrum development. The spectrum of cooperative efforts DARIAH engages in is therefore multifaceted: at one end of this range, we engage in largely bilateral relationships with key organisations, in particular other ERICs, often reflecting the rich interweavings of infrastructures in the national consortia that feed into DARIAH-EU. We also maintain small and larger group cooperative efforts as well as field-wide community participation on key macro-level issues.

This is the third of three reports composing the technology watch of CLARIAH-DE. The aim of all three reports is to give an overview of technological developments relevant to the project and its partners, and to offer recommendations concerning their adaptation within CLARIAH-DE. The first technology watch report discussed digital repository solutions from the perspective of research infrastructures. Simultaneously, an evaluation of current PID solutions was published. The second technology watch report, published as DARIAH-DE Working Paper, discussed certification schemes from the perspective of a humanities research infrastructure. The current report maps the relations of CLARIAH-DE with the European research infrastructure level and takes a more strategic and governance-related perspective, as compared to the other reports. It aims at aggregating an overview of the most relevant projects and initiatives CLARIAH-DE has to be aware of, connects to, or cooperates with for the sake of providing support to its users, i.e. researchers affiliated with the humanities. For the sake of clarity, we decided to arrange the format in a table. The matrix does not claim completeness but covers the most relevant European initiatives for CLARIAH-DE from the perspective of Work Package 4, which is devoted to the technical integration. The matrix reflects the state of March 2021. The authors have selected those aspects they considered relevant or where synergies and integration benefits seemed to be most obvious., The document is intended to be read on screen or to be printed as paper version in the DIN A3 format.

Extended abstract in Spanish En esta comunicación se presenta el proyecto Co-UDlabs, un proyecto europeo H2020 (2021-2025) que lidera la Universidad de A Coruña. El objetivo general del proyecto es integrar las actividades de investigación e innovación en el ámbito de los sistemas de drenaje urbano, lo que permitirá a los diferentes agentes del sector del agua, investigadores e innovadores mejorar su actividad a través de una comunidad colaborativa a nivel europeo de innovación en drenaje urbano y el acceso gratuito a instalaciones de investigación punteras. En Co-UDlabs, se ofrece acceso a 17 instalaciones únicas de investigación a gran escala en el ámbito del drenaje urbano pertenecientes a siete instituciones de investigación europeas, promoviendo el desarrollo de proyectos innovadores de calidad con el apoyo y experiencia de grupos de investigación punteros a nivel europeo en el campo del drenaje urbano. Las actividades de ‘networking’ y de investigación coordinadas están dirigidas a crear y reforzar una comunidad europea de innovación en materia de drenaje urbano, asegurando su viabilidad a largo plazo y contribuyendo al desarrollo y transferencia de nuevas tecnologías, procedimientos y prácticas en el ámbito del drenaje urbano.

Meeting the conflicting goals of protecting and maintaining control over sensitive data while also allowing access by third parties constitutes a significant challenge. Secure data infrastructures support data visiting in a highly controlled and monitored environment which, if properly set-up and operated, provide high security guarantees through a combination of technical, legal and procedural mechanisms. To ease the process of deploying such a secure data infrastructure, we present a detailed documentation of the architecture and processes of such an infrastructure and provide a pre-configured reference implementation based entirely on open source software that can be flexibly configured to meet differing security requirements and deployment scenarios. We combine mechanisms for data visiting on secured infrastructure components with optional components of data anonymization and fingerprinting, covered by extensive logging and monitoring functions and embedded in defined processes and contractual frameworks based upon the experience of operating such a secure infrastructure in the medical domain for almost ten years, addressing the emerging need to make such a solution available to a larger set of stakeholders. We show that our system significantly enhances data visiting, offers a higher level of isolation and present lessons learned.

Sharing sensitive data is a specific challenge within EOSC-Life. This deliverable reports on the preliminary results of the design of a toolbox to provide information to researchers who wish to share and/or use sensitive data in a public cloud environment in general, and in e-infrastructures adhering to the European Open Science Cloud in particular. The sensitivity of the data may arise from its personal nature, but can also be caused by intellectual property considerations, biohazard concerns, or compliance with the Nagoya protocol. The toolbox will not be based on newly generated content, instead, it will guide researchers to find existing resources that are relevant for sharing sensitive data across all participating research infrastructures (F in FAIR). The toolbox will provide links to recommendations, procedures, and best practices, as well as to software (tools) to support data sharing and reuse. It will be based upon a tagging (categorisation) system, allowing consistent labelling and categorisation of resources. The toolbox design is steered by a large working group meeting on a monthly basis with participation of a broad range of research infrastructures (the authors of this report).The current deliverable report provides a high-level summary of the results that already have been detailed further in documents published in Zenodo over the previous year, and which are referenced in this report. Finally, the document will also provide an outlook for the next steps towards the actual implementation of the toolbox and, ultimately, its sustainability beyond the EOSC-Life project’s lifetime.

COVID-19 has a substantial impact on the operations of analytical facilities that serve external users.1 At the end of April 2020, only a third of the surveyed research infrastructures (RIs) reported that they maintained such user access activities; however, several had set up specific COVID-19 services and responded to travel limitations with a strong shift towards remote services. Half a year later, the pandemic is still not over, and the significant mutations of the virus observed recently indicate that COVID-19 is likely to remain endemic for the foreseeable future. RIs, as a consequence, will have to learn how to live with it to some degree, possibly for years to come.

In this paper, we present a research infrastructure, built within the Department of Excellence project in order to support a wide spectrum of big data analysis related to e-health. More in details we built a both a public cloud based infrastructure and a private cloud one in order to guarantee a high performance approach to researchers.

The ESFRI Roadmap 2021 is the sixth edition of the document, which has been influencing the European and national RIs strategies, policies and funding since 2006. ESFRI periodically updates its Roadmap to provide a coherent and strategic vision ensuring that Europe has excellence RIs in all fields of science and innovation5,6,7. The key messages of the 2021 edition of the Roadmap, prepared during the COVID-19 pandemic, clearly underline the importance of world-class RIs in enabling cutting-edge research needed to address the pressing requests and challenges of our society. This Roadmap, with the highest total cost of needed investments since the first edition in 2006, also demonstrates the persisting willingness of national governments to substantially invest in improving the RIs capacities in Europe, as an important element of our long-term scientific sovereignty and crisis preparedness. This Strategy Report consists of four interconnected parts. First, it describes the MAIN FEATURES AND OUTCOMES OF THE ROADMAP 2021. Secondly, it presents WHAT IS NEW IN THE ROADMAP 2021 edition in comparison to its predecessor. In the third part, it analyses the LESSONS LEARNT from this Roadmap and from the work of ESFRI over the last three years. The final part provides a strategic outlook into the future, identifying the key challenges for the RI policy in the coming years, CHALLENGES AND STRATEGY FOR THE FUTURE. This strategic outlook is particularly important as the fast evolving RI ecosystem is challenged by changing external circumstances and ESFRI needs to react to those changes in order to be capable of maintaining its capability to provide timely and relevant strategic advice and to stimulate further development of the RI ecosystem in Europe. This document presents a strategy for ENVRI community communication and engagement actions. Such activities aim to further build the community of environmental research infrastructures (RI), with a special eye on the engagement of the RI scientific communities. The idea is to promote the RI collaboration benefits and inform about the opportunities offered thanks to the integrative and harmonization work among the RIs. However, the main goal of this strategy is to increase the visibility and two-way communications and engagement of the external stakeholders for the benefit of the ENVRI community as much as the collaborating RIs. This deliverable presents a summary of communications activities that are more possible, effective, or economical to do together rather than by individual member research infrastructures. We hope that such activities will increase the understanding of the Earth system's complexity and the necessity of studying the system holistically and the understanding of each specific RI's role in that system. Since such understanding is very much dependent on the in-situ observations, i.e., on the environmental RIs, the goal of the communications activities is to put the data and services provided by the RIs into the spotlight, and in that way attract more users, and eventually deliver a top-level multidisciplinary science.

This SWOT analysis report is the first step in the process towards developing a long-term sustainable coordination model for the European research vessel community. It provides and analysis of the relevance of Research Vessels, the European Research Vessel fleet and the current EU policy towards Transnational access to these infrastructures. The EUROFLEETS+ “Foresight: Legacy and Roadmap” - Objectives and Work Plan are described, with a detailed examination of possible legal entity models to advance towards a Eurofleets RI. Finally, two models are proposed as possible options for a long-term sustainable coordination model for the European research vessels (EUROFLEETS RI).

CIES2020 - XVII Congresso Ibérico e XIII Congresso Ibero-americano de Energia Solar RESUMO: A INIESC, Infraestrutura Nacional de Investigação em Energia Solar de Concentração, parte integrante do Roteiro Nacional de Infraestruturas de Investigação, apresenta-se como a infraestrutura experimental de referência, em Portugal, no domínio das tecnologias e aplicações da energia solar a média e alta temperatura. Liderada pela Universidade de Évora e desenvolvida em parceria com o Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia, I.P., a infraestrutura conta com dois pólos: Évora e Lisboa. Visando investigação que promove uma potenciação do contributo da energia solar na descarbonização de diferentes sectores da economia – geração eléctrica, transportes, gestão do sistema energético, comunidades energeticamente independentes, processos industriais – as actividades da INIESC abarcam tópicos que incluem, e.g., o desenvolvimento de tecnologias de colectores, o armazenamento de energia, a produção de combustíveis por via solar e a durabilidade de materiais. Neste artigo apresenta-se o estado actual de desenvolvimento da infraestrutura, assim como um resumo das actividades de I&D nela desenvolvidas até ao presente. ABSTRACT: INIESC, the National Research Infrastructure on Concentrated Solar Energy, part of the National Roadmap of Research Infrastructures, stands as the Portuguese reference experimental Research Infrastructure on the field of solar concentrating technologies at medium and high temperature solar energy applications. Led by the University of Évora and developed in partnership with the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology, I.P., the infrastructure has two nodes: Évora and Lisbon. Aiming at the development of research promoting a wider contribution of solar energy in the decarbonization of different economic sectors – e.g. power generation, transportation, energy system management, energy autonomous communities, industrial processes – INIESC activities spread to topics which include the development of collector technologies, energy storage or production of solar fuels and durability of materials. In recent years, the productive interactions approach has gained increasing prominence as a foundation for studying the socioeconomic impact of science. So far, however, it has been deployed primarily as a heuristic for analyses in the context of social sciences research at universities. The majority of impact studies of basic research infrastructures, in contrast, have remained focused on these facilities' long-term contribution to science, their role as economic agents or the learning effects induced through their collaboration with suppliers. This paper demonstrates that the array of productive interactions at basic research infrastructures can be substantially wider. First, it identifies a number of productive interactions relevant for this context based on workshops with diverse infrastructures' managements. Beyond qualified procurement, these include on-demand experiments, scientific collaboration with industrial partners, the provision of datasets, the development of technical equipment and external communication. Second, our survey of the DESY synchrotron's users reveals that productive interactions with external partners are prevalent and tend to be embedded in particular project types. Among such projects, we find those most associated with concrete impact that involve external partners in a formal manner.

The European Loans and Visits System (ELViS), a deliverable of SYNTHESYS+ WP6, will implement a one-stop shop for researchers to provide open access to over 490 million specimens at 21 institutions. ELViS will support workflows for Virtual Access (VA) and Transnational Access (TA) calls and for individual loans, visits, and digitization requests. In order to facilitate these workflows, ELViS will use, collect, integrate, and generate data that will flow through different components. This deliverable (D6.1) identifies these relevant data sources and the associated data flows. The key objective is to ensure that the source and nature of these data resources and flows is documented and available for future development initiatives facilitating collection access across institutions.

Die Schweizerische Akademie der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften SAGW gehört zu den bedeutendsten Trägerorganisationen geisteswissenschaftlicher Forschungsinfrastrukturen in der Schweiz. Anhand verschiedener Initiativen der Akademie wird die Bedeutung der für die Digital Humanities grundlegenden Ressourcen aufgezeigt. Sie stellen Wissensbestände zur Verfügung, die sich an den FAIR Guiding Principles und der Open-Science-Initiative orientieren. Darüber hinaus ist es ein Anliegen der SAGW, die Forschungsleistung der Geisteswissenschaften in der Schweiz durch das Portal AGATE sichtbar zu machen, die Anbindung an europäische Netzwerke wie DARIAH und CLARIN voranzutreiben sowie Webservices wie Metagrid und histHub zu unterstützen, welche die Datenvernetzung und den Datenaustausch durch Normierung und Standardisierung fördern. Presentations during the 5th public session of OpenAIRE Week, General Assembly: "Building Open Science Gateways to open and linked research outcomes". This session goal was to present the OpenAIRE services that support research communities, initiatives, and infrastructures at implementing and monitoring the uptake of Open Science principles.

Archaeological researchers in many European countries lack state-of-the-art digital repositories where they can deposit their data for long-term preservation and make it available to the research community. The paper suggests building and mandating deposition of the data in a national-level repository as an effective solution. It enables clear orientation of all national stakeholders, formation of a trusted centre of expertise, guidance and support, cost-effectiveness of data curation and access, and aggregation at the European level by the ARIADNE data infrastructure.

During the firstyear of the project the cluster worked on the data service requirement tracking and a technology landscape and gap analysis on the RI FAIR data/services level, to provide an up-to-date investigation of the most common gaps the ENVRIs need to bridge with respect to the FAIR principles and the EOSC requirements. The FAIRness analysis (D5.1) established that the participating RIs display a wide range of states of readiness. The present document uses this analysis to explain the actions that have been taken bythe ENVRI-FAIR partners during the second year of the project, and to define the common development goals and prepare an implementation plan at cluster level. During the WP5 Review Workshop in M10 of the project, a decision was made to form (six) cross-cutting Task Forces, which involve representatives from all subdomains, bringing together technical, scientific and managerial staff in order to coordinate the work on a common platform. The development of the ENVRI catalogue of services and other relevant technical issues, e.g. the authentication and authorisation of the cluster end-users, the role of persistent identifiers, triple stores and the best practices, the benefits of certifying data repositories and the available options, the technical approach of machine-readable licenses and their use for citation and usage tracking, and the design of interoperable demonstrators and cross-domain service prototypes, are introduced and discussed in the text.

We present the ENVRI-FAIR approach to consultancy by ICT experts with research infrastructure managers and developers, aimed at technology convergence across the community of environmental research infrastructures (ENVRIs) in order to ensure the production of FAIR (meta)data across the community. We identify three critical areas—(meta)data Catalogue, Syntax and Semantics—in which technology convergence is recommended, and prioritize the FAIR principles for their relevance to the three critical areas. We then present the range of instruments for consultancy at our disposal and how we have used them so far to support ENVRIs in implementing the FAIR principles. First results can be seen in implementation of provenance.

RISIS Panel at ESOF2020 focused on theKnowmak-toolwith a presentation ofDr.Thomas Scherngell,Dr.Barbara Antonioli Mantegazzini, andDr.Ed Noyons(The RISIS-KNOWMAK tool providing integrated indicators on research and innovation activities across Europe with use cases as examples). The illustration ofKnowmak-toolhas been introduced by an exploration ofRISIS activitiesbyDr. Emanuela Realeand the delineation of strategies and ambitions byDr. Philippe Laredo, the RISIS project coordinator. The last part of the virtual conference has been dedicated to policy questions with a session entitledAddressing research and policy questions using RISIS resourcesand with the involvement ofDr.Ilaria Fava(Georg-August-Universität Göttingen),Dr.Koen Jonkers(DG Joint Research Centre, European Commission) andDr.Johannes Klumpers(Head of Research and Industrial Infrastructures Unit at European Commission).

Near-Real-Time (NRT) data transmission from distant observatory or sensor locations to data processing centre is a common feature shared by almost all ENVRIplus Research Infrastructures (RI) and is essential for rapid quality checking for the benefit of RI operators. NRT data transmission and quality control procedures are left to independent choices of the RIs responding to their specific needs and availability of infrastructural resources. However, a common approach to those NRT technologies would be extremely useful to coordinate response of RIs in case of environmental crisis. This document summarizes some key technologies used for data transmission, their availability, capabilities (in terms of bandwidth) and associated costs. It analyses requirements of research infrastructures and gives a summary of RIs best practises with respect to data transmission. Guided by the ENVRI Reference Model, further, potential harmonisation and standardisation approaches are discussed und special consideration of available sensor metadata standards and data transmission formats. In addition, common near real time quality routines and algorithms are presented. We will show in this deliverable that data transmission is not an easy task and hardly can be harmonized - in technical terms - across all ENVRIplus research infrastructures due to the diverse latency and bandwidth requirements and telecommunication availability e.g. at distant sites. However, emerging standards have a good potential to move the standardisation of data transmission and will move the standardisation level closer to the sensor which would in turn enable cross domain data processing services such as the identified common NRT quality control routines.
