China’s digital divide is explored through spatial and multivariate analysis. The dependent variables include general uses of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and mobile devices, measures of ICT infrastructure, purposeful uses for software services, and purposeful uses of e-commerce. Independent variables include a variety of demographic, economic, educational, ethnic, innovation, and knowledge production indicators. Data come from the China Yearbook. Theoretically, the study draws on the Spatially Aware Technology Utilization Model (SATUM). Digital disparities in Chinese provinces are analyzed using regression analysis, spatial autocorrelation, and k-means cluster analysis. The important correlates associated with digital inequality are expenditure for science and technology, income, R&D investment, full-time teachers, non-Han (minority) population, and proportion of urbanization. Longitudinal comparison reveals factors influencing ICT changes to be expenditure on science and technology, the unemployment rate, and college degree. Among the cluster findings are geographic concentrations of digital variables in Shanghai and Beijing and marked spatial pattern differences in central and central–east China between variable groups. Provincial and national policy implications, which are compared to China’s five-year plans, include an emphasis on science and technology, technology education in all provinces, support for higher provincial incomes, and ICT training for the non-Han population. These steps are especially important in ICT-deprived provinces.

Solar energy reaching a horizontal surface can possess fluctuations that impact electricity generation at a solar plant. Despite this, energy access remains inadequate, particularly in rural areas, with an estimated 82% deficiency. This drives us to assess the regressive and spatial-temporal accessibility of solar energy in the southern and mid regions of Mozambique. This evaluation aims to determine the actual availability of energy for electrification purposes. Data on global horizontal irradiation from approximately 8 stations across all provinces in the specified regions, collected between 2012 and 2014 at intervals of 1 and 10 min, were analyzed using regression and correlation methods along with a specialized algorithm for classifying days based on clear sky index terms. The statistical analysis identified days with significant potential for energy accessibility, exceeding 50% of the average. The findings suggest a correlation coefficient of approximately 0.30 for energy and non-linear regression with clear sky index coefficients around 0.80. The method employed demonstrated accuracy when compared to theoretical simulations of the clear sky index in the region, indicating its potential applicability in other regions of interest.

History is a subject that students often find uninspiring in school education. This paper explores the application of social VR metaverse platforms in combination with interactive, nonlinear web platforms designed for immersive storytelling to support learning about a sensitive historical event, namely the Asia Minor Catastrophe. The goal was to design an alternative method of learning history and investigate if it would engage students and foster their independence. A mixed-methods research design was applied. Thirty-four (n = 34) adult participants engaged in the interactive book and VR space over the course of three weeks. After an online workshop, feedback was collected from participants through a custom questionnaire. The quantitative data from the questionnaire were analyzed statistically utilizing IBM SPSS, while the qualitative responses were coded thematically. This study reveals that these two tools can enhance historical education by increasing student engagement, interaction, and understanding. Participants appreciated the immersive and participatory nature of the material. This study concludes that these technologies have the potential to enhance history education by promoting active participation and engagement.

Immune responses to cancer are highly variable, with mismatch repair-deficient (MMRd) tumors exhibiting more anti-tumor immunity than mismatch repair-proficient (MMRp) tumors. To understand the rules governing these varied responses, we transcriptionally profiled 371,223 cells from colorectal tumors and adjacent normal tissues of 28 MMRp and 34 MMRd individuals. Analysis of 88 cell subsets and their 204 associated gene expression programs revealed extensive transcriptional and spatial remodeling across tumors. To discover hubs of interacting malignant and immune cells, we identified expression programs in different cell types that co-varied across tumors from affected individuals and used spatial profiling to localize coordinated programs. We discovered a myeloid cell-attracting hub at the tumor-luminal interface associated with tissue damage and an MMRd-enriched immune hub within the tumor, with activated T cells together with malignant and myeloid cells expressing T cell-attracting chemokines. By identifying interacting cellular programs, we reveal the logic underlying spatially organized immune-malignant cell networks.

To assess their orientation in mazes, Dashiell (1930) developed a procedure allowing rats to reach the goal by utilizing paths of equal distance from the starting point. The main finding was the variety of new pathways the subjects took to reach the goal. Given the need for a task that might evaluate behavioral variability in humans, a simulation of the Dashiell procedure was developed: a virtual maze for human participants. With the goal of validating an animal model task for assessing human behavior variability, this study presents an experiment comparing rat and human performance when traversing a Dashiell maze. Results showed that rats in their maze and humans in the virtual version had similar path variability for reaching the goal; though humans showed higher dispersion from the mean. We conclude that the adaptive function of route variability in rats is similar to that in humans; thus the virtual Dashiell maze could become a reliable and straightforward task for assessing human behavior variability. Our study encourages the use of virtual mazes to compare behavioral variability between humans and other species.

Interior design is very important and needs to be considered when building a library. Efforts to present a library interior design that meets the needs and comfort of library visitors requires good understanding and planning. Library interiors that combine aesthetic values will affect the use of library services for users. This study uses the method of literature study or literature review through scientific concepts that discuss library science from several library journals and interior design. The research develops the main issues on how interior design can affect the comfort of library visitors and how to develop a good library interior design. The aim of the research is to find out how interior design affects the comfort of library visitors. This research is expected to be useful for library development and facilitate planning in the library.

Abstract Exposure to pesticides may cause adaptation not only in agricultural pests and pathogens, but also in non-target organisms. Previous studies mainly searched for adaptations in non-target organisms in pesticide-polluted sites. However, organisms may propagate heritable pesticide effects, such as increased tolerance, to non-exposed populations through gene flow. We examined the pesticide tolerance—as one of the pre-assumptions of local adaptation—of the freshwater crustacean Gammarus spp. (at genus level reflecting the gammarid community). The pesticide tolerance was quantified in acute toxicity tests using the insecticide imidacloprid. Gammarids were sampled at pesticide-polluted agricultural sites (termed agriculture), least impacted upstream sites (termed refuge) and transitional sites (termed edge) in six small streams of south-west Germany. Furthermore, we examined the population genetic structure of Gammarus fossarum and the energy reserves (here lipid content) of G. fossarum as well as of Gammarus spp. at the three site types (i.e. agriculture, edge and refuge). We found significantly lower imidacloprid tolerance of Gammarus spp. from agricultural sites compared to edge and refuge sites, potentially due to higher environmental stress at agricultural sites, as indicated by a slightly lower lipid content per mg gammarid tissue. We found no differences in pesticide tolerance between edge and refuge populations, indicating no propagation of pesticide effects to edges. The genetic structure among G. fossarum populations showed significant differentiation between streams, but not within a stream across the site types. We suggest that high gene flow within each stream hindered population differentiation and resulted in similar (pre)adaptations to local stress levels between site types, although they exhibited different pesticide pollution. Further studies on target genes (e.g., conferring pesticide tolerance), population structure and fitness of different phenotypes in particular among non-target organisms are required for adjacent pristine ecosystems to detect potential propagations of pesticide effects.

Abstract Background Diarrhoea is one of the leading reasons for under-five child mortality and morbidity across the globe and especially in low- and middle-income countries like India. The present study aims to investigate and identify the spatial clustering and the factors associated with diarrhoea across 707 districts of different states in India. Methods This study used National Family Health Survey-4 & 5 (2015–16 & 2019–21) data in India. Spatial analysis software i.e., ArcGIS and GeoDa including Moran’s statistics have been applied to detect the spatial prevalence and auto-correlation of diarrhoea among neighbourhood districts. Bivariate analysis with a chi-square test and logistic regression has been performed to identify the factors associated with the morbidity condition. Results The result shows out of 2,23,785 children, 7.3 percent children suffer from diarrhoea in India. The prevalence is highest in Bihar (13.7%) and lowest in Lakshadweep (2.3%). Around 33 percent of districts have reported more than the national average level of diarrhoea prevalence. The study also found a medium to high level of autocorrelation with 0.41 Moran’s Index value and detected 69 hot-spots districts mostly from Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, and Gujarat. The study has also found, with an increase in children’s age as well as mother's age the prevalence of the disease decreases. The prevalence is more among male children than females. Underweight [OR = 1.08, 95% CI (1.03–1.13)] children have a greater risk of suffering from diarrhoeal diseases. The odds of children living in a pucca house [OR = 0.89, 95% CI (0.68–1.16)] are less likely to suffer from diarrhoea. On the other hand, rich economic status [OR = 0.91, 95% CI (0.86–0.97)], reduce the risk of such morbid conditions. Conclusion The study recommends targeting the hot-spot districts with high prevalence areas, and district-level interventions by improving housing type and child nutrition status, which can help to prevent diarrhoeal diseases among children in India. Thus, the identification of hotspot districts and suggested policy interventions by the current study can help to prevent childhood mortality and morbidity, as well as to achieve the target given by Sustainable development Goals 3.2.

Abstract Introduction Anemia is a severe global public health problem that threatens human health as well as social and economic development in both developing and developed nations. Anemia is a significant public health issue because; it affects people from all backgrounds. Anemia affected about one-third of non-pregnant women, 41.8% of pregnant women, and more than a quarter of the world’s population. Any stage of a woman’s life might result in anemia, due to physiological factors, infections, hormonal imbalances, pregnancy related complications, genetic factors, nutritional deficiency and environmental factors. Mali is a developing country with substantial anemia prevalence, particularly in the developing areas. In order to reduce anemia among women of reproductive age, the Mali government worked to enhance preventative and integrative interventions. One of the government’s objectives is to reduce the prevalence of anemia in order to decrease maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. Methods Secondary data analysis was conducted using data from Mali Malaria Indicator Survey 2021 datasets. The study comprised a total of 10,765 reproductive-age women. Spatial and multilevel mixed effect analysis, chi-square, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were employed on determinant factors of anemia among reproductive age women in Mali. Finally, the percentage and odd ratio, its 95% confidence intervals, and the result of spatial analysis were reported. Results This study includes a total weighted sample of 10,765 reproductive-age women from Mali Malaria Indicator Survey 2021. The prevalence of anemia was 38%. Of them, 1.4%, were severely anemic, while 23.5% and 13.1% were moderately and mildly anemic, respectively in Mali. In the spatial analysis, the spatial distribution of anemia showed that a higher proportion of anemia found in southern and south west region of Mali. The northern and north east region of Mali had a low of proportion of anemia. being youngest age [20–24] years [ AOR = 0.817; 95% CI = (0.638,1.047); P = 0.000], attending higher education [AOR = 0.401; 95% CI= (0.278,0.579); P = 0.000], being male headed household [AOR = 0.653; 95% CI= (0.536,0.794); P = 0.000] and being richest [AOR = 0.629; 95% CI= (0.524,0.754) P = 0.000] were protective factors for anemia among reproductive age women. In contrast to this, living in rural area [ AOR = 1.053; 95% CI = (0.880,1.260); P = 0.000], being animist religion follower [AOR = 3.10; 95% CI= (0.763,12.623) P = 0.04], using unimproved drinking water sources [AOR = 1.117; CI= (1.017,1.228); P = 0.021} and using unimproved toilet facility [AOR = 1.018; CI= (0.917,1.130); P = 0.041} were considered as the risk factors for anemia among reproductive age women. Conclusion In this study, anemia was linked to socio-demographic characteristics, and there were regional variations in the frequency of anemia among women of reproductive age. The most important measures to prevent anemia among women of reproductive age in Mali included empowering women to have higher levels of education, raising the wealth index, rise in awareness of improved drinking water sources and toilet facilities, spreading anemia education through religiously acceptable routes, and using an integrated approach to prevention and intervention in high-prevalent regions of the country.

Abstract Background In Ethiopia, acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five years. Geographically linked data analysis using nationally representative data is crucial to map spatial patterns of ARIs and identify spatially-varying factors of ARI. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate spatial patterns and spatially-varying factors of ARI in Ethiopia. Methods Secondary data from the Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey (EDHS) of 2005, 2011, and 2016 were used. Kuldorff’s spatial scan statistic using the Bernoulli model was used to identify spatial clusters with high or low ARI. Hot spot analysis was conducted using Getis-OrdGi statistics. Eigenvector spatial filtering regression model was carried out to identify spatial predictors of ARI. Results Acute respiratory infection spatially clustered in 2011 and 2016 surveys year (Moran’s I:-0.011621–0.334486). The magnitude of ARI decreased from 12.6% (95%, CI: 0.113–0.138) in 2005 to 6.6% (95% CI: 0.055–0.077) in 2016. Across the three surveys, clusters with a high prevalence of ARI were observed in the North part of Ethiopia. The spatial regression analysis revealed that the spatial patterns of ARI was significantly associated with using biomass fuel for cooking and children not initiating breastfeeding within 1-hour of birth. This correlation is strong in the Northern and some areas in the Western part of the country. Conclusion Overall there has been a considerable decrease in ARI, but this decline in ARI varied in some regions and districts between surveys. Biomass fuel and early initiation of breastfeeding were independent predictors of ARI. There is a need to prioritize children living in regions and districts with high ARI.

Synchronization of planning and budgeting is a common problem that is often experienced by public organizations in Indonesia, especially in the Ministry of Transportation. The gap in planning and implementation due to this problem is a symptom that the THIS (Thematic, Holistic, Integrative, Spatial) concept has not been able to run optimally and could be optimized through e-government, which does actually not yet reflect the interoperability aspects between each planning application such as e-planning & budgeting; e-performance; e-monitoring & reporting; up to ap2kp (Aplication for Appraisal of Achievement and Calculation of Empoyee Performance). This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method strengthened by an Analytical Hierarchy Process to examine the application of the electronic-based THIS concept. The results of this study provide policy advices for the preparation of a new ministerial regulation about integrated planning and develop a business process related to the planning flow within the Ministry of Transportation which accommodates the THIS concept.

Abstract Background Malnutrition is both a significant cause and a result of poverty and deprivation. In developing nations, child malnutrition is still the main public health issue. Severe malnutrition affects every system of the body and leads to medical instability. The assessment of the burden of severe malnutrition is important for ready-to-use therapeutic foods and preparing therapy for these conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and spatial distribution of severe malnutrition and the factors associated with it. Methods Data from the 2019 Mini-EDHS (Ethiopian Demographic and Health Surveys) with stratified sampling techniques were used. The data were weighted using sample weight to restore the data's representativeness and provide accurate statistical estimations. A total of 5,006 weighted samples of children under the age of five were used to analyze the study. A multilevel binary logistic regression model was built, and a cutoff P-value of 0.05 was used. The wag staff normalized concentration index and curve as well as spatial analysis were used. Results The prevalence of severe malnutrition practice among under five years children in Ethiopia was 14.89% (95%CI: 13.93%, 15.91%), and ranges from 4.58% in Addis Ababa to 25.81% in the Afar region. Women with secondary and above education status as compared to uneducated [AOR = 0.17; 95%CI;[0.06, 0.48], high community women's education as compared to low [AOR = 0.54; 95%CI; 0.36, 0.78], women from richest household as compared to poorest [AOR = 0.63; 95%CI; 0.26, 0.94] and living in Oromia region as compared to Tigray [AOR = 0.33: 95%CI; 0.15, 0.74] were preventive factors. Whereas children 24–59 months of age as compared to under six months [AOR = 1.62; 95%CI; 1.50, 1.75], and being multiple births as compared to single [AOR = 5.34; 95%CI; 1.36,2 1.01] have significant risk factors for severe malnutrition. There was a pro-poor distribution of severe malnutrition among under-five children in Ethiopia with a concentration index of -0.23 [95%CI: -0.27, -0.19]. Abstract Background Childhood overweight and obesity levels are rising and becoming a concern globally. In Costa Rica, the prevalence of these conditions has reached alarming values. Spatial analyses can identify risk factors and geographical patterns to develop tailored and effective public health actions in this context. Methods A Bayesian spatial mixed model was built to understand the geographic patterns of childhood overweight and obesity prevalence in Costa Rica and their association with some socioeconomic factors. Data was obtained from the 2016 Weight and Size Census (6 - 12 years old children) and 2011 National Census. Results Average years of schooling increase the levels of overweight and obesity until reaching an approximate value of 8 years, then they start to decrease. Moreover, for every 10-point increment in the percentage of homes with difficulties to cover their basic needs and in the percentage of population under 14 years old, there is a decrease of 7.7 and 14.0 points, respectively, in the odds of obesity. Spatial patterns show higher values of prevalence in the center area of the country, touristic destinations, head of province districts and in the borders with Panama. Conclusions Especially for childhood obesity, the average years of schooling is a non-linear factor, describing a U-inverted curve. Lower percentages of households in poverty and population under 14 years old are slightly associated with higher levels of obesity. Districts with high commercial and touristic activity present higher prevalence risk.

Nowadays, multimedia content utility is increasing rapidly. Multimedia search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc., are available just a click away to all users. There are around 500-600 hours of video uploads per unit of time to the Internet. So, among other types of multimedia content, such as text and images, video is the most complicated content for indexing, browsing, and retrieval. Videos give more scope for implementation because of their complex and unstructured nature. This paper proposes a new method of video storyboard generation with keyframe extraction in spatial and frequency domains using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) for video summarization. It discusses the empirical appraisal of video visual keyframes with t-test analysis in comparison with spatial and frequency domains, resulting in a quick response to customer demands by providing static storyboards. This study proposes a new performance measure as matching frames by analyzing input videos and the standard benchmarks video dataset, i.e., Open Video Project (OVP) and SumMe. Among all the keyframe extraction techniques, DCT gives higher accuracy and a better matching rate.

While there is a proliferation of Decision Support Tools (DSTs) to enhance agricultural water productivity (AWP) and related objectives such as food security, an assessment of their adoption and performance is not known to be undertaken. To develop new or improved DSTs for bespoke applications in optimizing AWP, there needs to be a stock-take of the existing tools, their functionality, user-friendliness and uptake. We compiled and assessed existing DSTs for AWP as a starting point for present and future developers who intend to improve existing or develop new DSTs for optimizing AWP. Secondarily, this review identifies DSTs' key characteristics, availability, and applicability for different typologies and spatio-temporal scales. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach was applied to search for literature from Scopus and WoS databases. The study revealed the existence of 81 documented AWP DSTs whose development started from around the 1970 s, peaked in the 1990 s, and declined after that although the improvement and upgrading of existing DSTs continued. Over half (51%) of the DSTs are not readily available in the public domain. The prevalent spatial and temporal application scales are field and day, respectively. There is limited reporting on the application at scale, partly due to the wide unavailability of DSTs. A gap exists in AWP DSTs with geospatial capabilities (one in 10 or 10% had geographic information systems (GIS) integration capabilities). Most DSTs focus on water and food (yield) components but omit energy and other dimensions of AWP. Regarding format, most tools were available as desktop (35%) and web-based (48%) applications, and codes (27%). Developers should strive to deliver AWP tools in convenient, compatible, and user-friendly for a wide range of users, from novices to experts.

Biomedical single-cell atlases describe disease at the cellular level. However, analysis of this data commonly focuses on cell-type-centric pairwise cross-condition comparisons, disregarding the multicellular nature of disease processes. Here, we propose multicellular factor analysis for the unsupervised analysis of samples from cross-condition single-cell atlases and the identification of multicellular programs associated with disease. Our strategy, which repurposes group factor analysis as implemented in multi-omics factor analysis, incorporates the variation of patient samples across cell-types or other tissue-centric features, such as cell compositions or spatial relationships, and enables the joint analysis of multiple patient cohorts, facilitating the integration of atlases. We applied our framework to a collection of acute and chronic human heart failure atlases and described multicellular processes of cardiac remodeling, independent to cellular compositions and their local organization, that were conserved in independent spatial and bulk transcriptomics datasets. In sum, our framework serves as an exploratory tool for unsupervised analysis of cross-condition single-cell atlases and allows for the integration of the measurements of patient cohorts across distinct data modalities.

IntroductionTo investigate the spatiotemporal evolution of agricultural carbon emissions and carbon absorption, analyse the spatiotemporal variations in the carbon balance, delineate carbon-offsetting regions, and formulate low-carbon development strategies tailored to various major functional zones, this study aims to promote coordinated regional ecological and environmental governance.MethodsThis study takes a perspective based on major functional zones, focuses on 17 cities in Hubei Province, studies the spatiotemporal variations in agricultural carbon budgets and carbon offsets in each city from the perspective of functional zoning and proposes a spatial optimization scheme for reducing carbon emissions.Results and discussionThe results show that both agricultural carbon emissions and carbon absorption in Hubei Province gradually increased, although the agricultural carbon budgets varied significantly among cities. Arable lands were the main agricultural carbon sinks in Hubei Province. Overall, carbon emissions exhibited declining core–periphery zonation, with Xiangyang, Jingzhou, and Huanggang serving as the centre (high emissions) and the cities of Shennongjia, Enshi, and Yichang serving as the periphery (low emissions). Carbon absorption displayed a U-shaped distribution, with high values in the east, south, and west and low values in the centre and north. The cities of Yichang, Jingmen, and Huanggang were the peak carbon sink areas. In recent years, the coordination between the agricultural carbon emissions and carbon budgets in Hubei Province has gradually improved, and agricultural carbon absorption and emissions have become increasingly balanced. Seven carbon-positive, five carbon-neutral, and five carbon-negative areas were identified in the province. Based on these findings, differentiated carbon emission reduction strategies were proposed to promote coordinated and low-carbon agriculture.

Background: This work aims to study the spatio-temporal evolution of a woman's age at menarche in the central region of Portugal. One of the concerns of the study is early or late menarches; thus, we consider percentile regression to build the respective curves as opposed to the more traditional mean regression approach. Methods: We analysed the data from N = 452 348 women born in the period 1920–1973 who attended a free breast cancer screening program between 1990 and 2019. Distributional regression models inside the package GAMLSS in R were considered. These methods allowed us not only to model the location (mean) of the specific probability distribution of the age at menarche, but also allowed for the scale (variance) parameter of this distribution to depend on covariates. Additionally, a spatial random-effect was considered in order to capture the correlation at the regional level. The obtained clustered spatial effects were analysed to assess geographical differences among the percentiles of the age at menarche by year of birth. Results: A decreasing trend in the age at menarche (about 1.5 years in 5 decades) and regional differences for all the considered percentiles were found. Women living in the north-central areas of the central region of Portugal tend to have menarche at older ages. Conclusion: We obtained percentile estimates for the age at menarche by year of birth and region of residence and demonstrated that these two explanatory variables have an impact on the explanation about the decreasing trend in age at a woman's first menstruation. Simple Summary: In Australia, bull sharks are one of the species implicated most regularly in shark–human interactions. The factors affecting bull shark presence in nearshore waters of New South Wales (NSW), Australia were examined to determine periods of increased overlap with beach-users and thereby potentially increased risk of shark–human interactions. We investigated the spatial ecology of 233 juvenile and large (including sub-adult and adult, >175 cm total length) bull sharks acoustically tagged and monitored over a 5.5-year period (2017–2023) along 21 coastal beaches of NSW. Our study highlights that large bull sharks were present more in waters north of 32° S with a southward distribution during summer and autumn. The occurrence of large bull sharks in nearshore waters was greatest from midday to 04:00, when water temperatures were higher than 20 °C, after >45 mm of rain and when swell heights were between 1.8 and 2.8 m. We show that current shark bite mitigation educational messaging, incorporating proximity to rivers, turbidity (rainfall) and time of day, reflect heightened periods of the occurrence of large bull sharks. We concur with the current shark smart advice that nocturnal swimming and surfing, especially in warm waters and when water visibility is poor, should be avoided for many reasons, not the least of which being the potential presence of bull sharks. However, we suggest that time of day messaging for large bull shark presence should be modified from "dawn and dusk" to instead refer to afternoon and low-light periods. Unprovoked shark bites have increased over the last three decades, yet they are still relatively rare. Bull sharks are globally distributed throughout rivers, estuaries, nearshore areas and continental shelf waters, and are capable of making long distance movements between tropical and temperate regions. As this species is implicated in shark bites throughout their range, knowledge of the environmental drivers of bull shark movements are important for better predicting the likelihood of their occurrence at ocean beaches and potentially assist in reducing shark bites. Using the largest dataset of acoustically tagged bull sharks in the world, we examined the spatial ecology of 233 juvenile and large (including sub-adult and adult) bull sharks acoustically tagged and monitored over a 5.5-year period (2017–2023) using an array of real-time acoustic listening stations off 21 beaches along the coast of New South Wales, Australia. Bull sharks were detected more in coastal areas of northern NSW (<32° S) but they travelled southwards during the austral summer and autumn. Juveniles were not detected on shark listening stations until they reached 157 cm and stayed north of 31.98° S (Old Bar). Intra-specific diel patterns of occurrence were observed, with juveniles exhibiting higher nearshore presence between 20:00 and 03:00, whilst the presence of large sharks was greatest from midday through to 04:00. The results of generalised additive models revealed that large sharks were more often found when water temperatures were higher than 20 °C, after >45 mm of rain and when swell heights were between 1.8 and 2.8 m. Understanding the influence that environmental variables have on the occurrence of bull sharks in the coastal areas of NSW will facilitate better education and could drive shark smart behaviour amongst coastal water users. Bobcats (Lynx rufus) were extirpated from many midwestern states in the mid‐1800s owing to habitat loss and overharvesting. Recently, bobcats have recolonized Ohio, USA, and neighboring states and given their furbearer status elsewhere, there is interest in opening a harvest season; however, demographic factors and viability of this population are currently unknown. We developed a spatial population simulation model to assess the long‐term viability of the bobcat population in Ohio in the face of 2 human‐induced factors limiting population growth: potential harvest and road mortality. We combined habitat suitability and road mortality risk data with vital rates for bobcats from Ohio and other populations to simulate possible scenarios for Ohio's population. Our baseline scenario simulations showed no risk of extinction for Ohio's bobcat population in the next 40 years, but population trajectories were lower and exhibited greater uncertainty when we modeled the population with a lower maximum density of animals per cell. At low harvest intensity (αh = 0.05), the bobcat population also exhibits low risk of extinction. When harvest intensity increases (αh = 0.1, 0.15) or when adults (≥2 yr) are targeted by harvest, simulations show declining populations, greater uncertainty in projections, and possible risk of extirpation. Our models indicated that if harvest and road mortality are additive, then the bobcat population could withstand marginal increases in road mortality (αr = 0.1) at low harvest intensity (αh = 0.05). Future increases in road mortality with higher harvest intensity (αh = 0.1, 0.15) were unsustainable. Our results can be used by wildlife managers to assist with decisions on population‐level management. The eruption of the most active volcano in Indonesia, Mount Merapi, has resulted in a very dynamic landscape as a form of ecosystem succession. This study aimed to analyze the carbon stock and vegetation composition in the secondary forest with variations in the level of disturbance after the 2010 eruption of Mount Merapi. Data collection was carried out in January 2020, in which biomass, necromass, and soil organic carbon data were taken in plot transect and Geographic Information Systems carbon stock products compared field data. The results showed that secondary forests at stations A and B with low and medium disturbance levels had carbon stocks in the high category. In contrast, station C at Cangkringan Resort, with high disturbance levels, still had carbon stock with a low category. Furthermore, the comparison of 2020 field data with GIS carbon stock products concluded a similar pattern between carbon stock from aboveground biomass WHRC 2010 and belowground biomass NASA 2010. This research concludes that the disturbance affected forest carbon stocks ten years after the 2010 Merapi eruption. Occupancy models have been extended to account for either multiple spatial scales or species interactions in a dynamic setting. However, as interacting species (e.g., predators and prey) often operate at different spatial scales, including nested spatial structure might be especially relevant to models of interacting species. Here we bridge these two model frameworks by developing a multi-scale, two-species occupancy model. The model is dynamic, i.e. it estimates initial occupancy, colonization and extinction probabilities—including probabilities conditional to the other species' presence. With a simulation study, we demonstrate that the model is able to estimate most parameters without marked bias under low, medium and high average occupancy probabilities, as well as low, medium and high detection probabilities, with only a small bias for some parameters in low-detection scenarios. We further evaluate the model's ability to deal with sparse field data by applying it to a multi-scale camera trapping dataset on a mustelid-rodent predator–prey system. Most parameters are estimated with low uncertainty (i.e. narrow posterior distributions). More broadly, our model framework creates opportunities to explicitly account for the spatial structure found in many spatially nested study designs, and to study interacting species that have contrasting movement ranges with camera traps.Supplementary materials accompanying this paper appear online. Seabirds are at risk of decline from multiple threats, including artificial light resulting in their grounding ("fallout"). Without evidence, it can be assumed that seabirds travel short distances from natal colonies to their fallout location, potentially to the closest light source. To test this, a case study on wedge‐tailed shearwaters (Ardenna pacifica, ʻUaʻu kani) fledging from the island of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi was conducted. To assess fallout locations in relation to natal colonies, we affixed identification bands to 4648 chicks at nine natal colonies prior to fledging from 2018 to 2022. Distances between fallout location and natal colony were mapped and fallout location characteristics (radiance, elevation, distances to nearest coastline, road, and colony) were analyzed for 27 banded fledglings that were discovered post‐fallout. The distance between the natal colony and fallout location was significantly greater than the distance between the nearest colony and the fallout location. Fallout often occurred on opposite coastlines from the natal colonies and at substantial distances (x¯ = 24.91 km), with one fallout event recorded on a different island from the natal colony. Our results demonstrate that all artificial lights, regardless of proximity to seabird colonies, may pose a threat to seabird fallout and that fallout is often occurring far from natal colonies and in inconsistent patterns. Collaborative, large‐scale, and multi‐island light management alteration, particularly during fledging periods, is critical in recovering Pacific Island seabird populations. This study offers a literature review and bibliometric analysis aiming to enhance our understanding of the actual contribution of resilience approaches to spatial and territorial development and planning studies. Using citation link-based clustering and statistical text-mining techniques (in terms of prevalence of topics, over time, extraction of relevant terms, keywords frequencies), our study maps scientific domains that include the spatial dimension of resilience thinking. It offers a systematic assessment of modern approaches by connecting profoundly theoretical views to more instrumental and policy-oriented approaches. Firstly, the theoretical background of spatial resilience used in numerous studies in various fields is analysed from the viewpoint of the type of embedded resilience (engineering, ecological, social-ecological, economic, social etc.). Secondly, we review and discuss the significance of three main and consistent research directions in terms of different scales and political/institutional contexts that matter from the viewpoint of spatial and territorial planning. Our findings show that spatial resilience debates are far from being settled, as according to many scientists, resilience measurements are often based on technical-reductionist frameworks that cannot comprehensively reflect the complex systems and issues they address. Our conclusions highlight the necessity of a harmonized framework and integrated perspective on resilience in sustainable territorial planning and development, in both theoretical and empirical contexts. This study examines those difficulties and suggests effective learning strategies which can be implemented to help lessen these problems. The study took place in a Korean Elementary school involving more than 100 students of various ages and levels. Initially the nature of the problems surrounding preposition comprehension was identified. Then an analysis based on cognitive linguistics was applied to seek to improve teaching strategies. The study was extended to include foreign born English Teachers’ and Korean Teachers’ views on the problem. The results show improvement in temporal understanding and a particularly marked improvement in males when temporal prepositions were also linked to spatial concepts. This could be because with males, spatial prepositions may be acting as supportive scaffolding linking the abstract temporal prepositions to the more concrete spatial concepts, which appeared to have a more significant impact on males than females. Recent studies have analyzed the writing metrics of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) using computerized systems. To date, the use of computerized visual feedback to improve handwriting has not been investigated. This study aimed to examine the effects of computerized visual feedback on handwriting performance in time, spatial orientation, and pressure indices for children with DCD. Twenty-seven children aged 7 to 12 years with DCD assessed by the Movement Assessment Battery for Children and the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire received one weekly intervention session for 8 weeks, during which they twice copied an excerpt onto a tablet. Once, they received visual feedback where the writing color corresponded to the degree of pressure on the writing surface, and once they received no visual feedback. The two conditions were counterbalanced throughout the sessions. Pre-intervention sessions were compared with post-intervention sessions and with new texts for time, spatial orientation, and pressure measures. The findings revealed significantly decreased total and mean letter writing, in-air, and writing time and increased capacity in the visual feedback condition. In the spatial variables, a significant decrease in letter height variance was found. Pressure increased significantly throughout the intervention with visual feedback, whereas it decreased post-test in the writing task in both conditions and was maintained in the new text. Visual feedback intervention can increase the kinesthetic–haptic feedback required to regulate pressure during writing, promoting more efficient feedforward processes and improving output quality and capacity. South Asia has a remarkable diversity of squirrels and they play an important role in the ecosystem functioning of this region. An evaluation on a global scale showed that the tropics of South and Southeast Asia, whilst being the centre of high diversity are areas that have given rise to very less scientific knowledge. Thus, this study aims to understand the temporal and spatial variation in squirrel research in South Asia and to map the thematic research areas on squirrel research and understand, how much funding has the squirrel research attracted in the past few decades. Keeping the research goals in mind, a systematized search for papers following the "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses" (PRISMA) framework was followed. The articles were searched in Scopus. It was found that the greatest number of studies were published between 2011–2020 showing a positive trend on a temporal scale. A total of 43 studies have been done which comprises to 76 percent of the total studies conducted are in India and India shares a huge percentage of major Sciuridae species research in South Asia. Background: The liver is the most typical site of metastatic disease for patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), and up to half the patients with CRC will develop colorectal liver metastasis (CLM). Studying the tumor microenvironment, particularly macrophages and their spatial distribution, can give us critical insight into treatment. Methods: Ten CLMs (five treatment-naïve and five post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy) were stained with multiplex immunofluorescence panels against cytokeratins, CD68, Arg1, CD206, CD86, CD163, PD-L1, and MRP8-14. Densities of cell phenotypes and their spatial distribution in the tumor center and the normal liver-tumor interface were correlated with clinicopathological variables. Results: M2 macrophages were the predominant subtype in both the tumor center and the periphery, with a relatively higher density at the periphery. The larger tumors, more than 3.9 cm, were associated with higher densities of total CD68+ macrophages and CD68+CD163+ CD206neg and CD68+CD206+ CD163neg M2 macrophage subtypes. Total macrophages in the tumor periphery demonstrated significantly greater proximity to malignant cells than did those in the tumor center (p=0.0371). The presence of higher than median CD68+MRP8-14+CD86neg M1 macrophages in the tumor center was associated with poor overall survival (median 2.34 years) compared to cases with lower than median M1 macrophages at the tumor center (median 6.41 years) in univariate analysis. The public realm of Istanbul manifests a visceral fear and agony caused by several social–political conflicts and struggle which has impacted the everyday life of people. Through an artistic representation of public space perception and experience in Istanbul, we reflect on how the socio-political context impacts the everyday spatialities entangling individual and collective memory, current events and future un(certainties). Going beyond the dominant Eurocentric version of 'good' public space, in this provocation, we argue that, delineating these emergent and largely disruptive narratives can offer potential approaches for alternative city imaginaries to enable a collective sense of identity and belonging. Healthcare services for people living with dementia (PLWD) are stretched, and government promises of increased funding remain undelivered. With the UK dementia population to surpass 1 million by 2024, and dementia care costs predicted to almost treble by 2040, it is essential we understand differences in healthcare use among PLWD. This study aimed to explore social and spatial variations in healthcare use among people diagnosed with dementia (2002–2016). Data were derived from Electronic Health Records of Clinical Practice Research Datalink GP patients in England (n = 142,302). To standardise healthcare contacts, rates of healthcare contacts per year were calculated for three primary (GP observations and medications) and three secondary healthcare types [Accident & Emergency (A&E) attendances and, emergency and elective hospital admissions]. Fully-adjusted generalised linear regression models were used to identify healthcare use variation by social and spatial groups. Twelve models were generated, one for each healthcare type in early- and late-onset populations separately. This study highlights numerous social and spatial variations in healthcare use among PLWD. Among PLWD, several groups tended to have healthcare service use more closely associated with negative outcomes, including a greater likelihood of A&E attendances and emergency and elective hospital admissions. These groups include: men, people from White ethnicity groups and people from more deprived and rural areas. Systemic and social measures are needed to reduce variations in healthcare use inequalities in PWLD. These include greater healthcare continuity, health checks and medicines reviews, culturally appropriate services, better and more accessible treatment and improved infrastructure. Existing landfills in Kediri Regency and City are experiencing overcapacity conditions which are influenced by the increasing volume of waste along with the increasing population and the rapid development of urban areas. The Regional Landfill in Kediri Regency which is a national project based on Presidential Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 80 of 2019 concerning the Acceleration of Economic Development in the Gresik - Bangkalan - Mojokerto - Surabaya - Sidoarjo - Lamongan, Bromo - Tengger - Semeru, and Selingkar Wilis - Lintas Selatan areas and is part of the Kediri Regency Regional Spatial Plan needs to be analyzed for location feasibility. The feasibility of the location of the Regional Landfill is the goal of this research with a spatial approach using Geographic Information Systems by considering the parameters in SNI 03-3241-1994 concerning Procedures for Selecting the Location of Waste Landfills. The selected variables are constraining factors consisting of regional criteria, namely geological conditions, hydrogeological conditions, slope, protected areas, distance to airfields, flood susceptibility and distance to water bodies. Mathematical and computational models of biological systems are increasingly complex, typically comprised of hybrid multi-scale methods such as ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, agent-based and rule-based models, etc. These mechanistic models concurrently simulate detail at resolutions of whole host, multi-organ, organ, tissue, cellular, molecular, and genomic dynamics. Lacking analytical and numerical methods, solving complex biological models requires iterative parameter sampling-based approaches to establish appropriate ranges of model parameters that capture corresponding experimental datasets. However, these models typically comprise large numbers of parameters and therefore large degrees of freedom. Thus, fitting these models to multiple experimental datasets over time and space presents significant challenges. In this work we undertake the task of reviewing, testing, and advancing calibration practices across models and dataset types to compare methodologies for model calibration. Evaluating the process of calibrating models includes weighing strengths and applicability of each approach as well as standardizing calibration methods. Our work compares the performance of our model agnostic Calibration Protocol (CaliPro) with approximate Bayesian computing (ABC) to highlight strengths, weaknesses, synergies, and differences among these methods. We also present next-generation updates to CaliPro. We explore several model implementations and suggest a decision tree for selecting calibration approaches to match dataset types and modeling constraints.

In recent years, there has been a surge of Metaverse applications and tools striving to capture the attention of both the general public and businesses, with a particularly strong potential within the tourism sector. However, there has been significant criticism towards major corporations for marketing a concept of the Metaverse that fails to align with reality. On the other hand, smaller entities such as Spatial-io, which is an innovative metaverse platform, are introducing a different style of the Metaverse, one that is highly accessible from contemporary devices like smartphones, tablets, VR headsets, and traditional PCs via WebXR platforms. This article delves into and scrutinizes various methodologies of a tourism-oriented Metaverse, considering its prospective utility as a vehicle to attract more visitors. A virtual tourist information center was established on the Spatial-io Metaverse platform to promote Valencia, Spain. This research scrutinizes the navigation, accessibility, and usability of the service from a conventional PC browser, contrasting it with the experience offered by the Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headset. The study's quantitative and qualitative data analysis indicates that these innovative services are highly regarded, particularly when a real person (not a bot) provides information, fostering trust and offering details about various tourist attractions within the promoted city. The comparison of user inquiries' time and depth aligns with the immersion level, demonstrating more positive feedback when the service is accessed through the VR system rather than a standard PC browser. Spatial and temporal information are two major feature dimensions of human movements. How these two types of information are represented in working memory—whether as integrated units or as individual features—influences how much information might be retained and how the retained information might be manipulated. In this study, we investigated how spatial (path/trajectory) and temporal (speed/rhythm) information of complex whole-body movements are represented in working memory under a more ecologically valid condition wherein the spatiotemporal continuity of movement sequences was considered. We found that the spatial and temporal information are not automatically integrated but share the storage capacity and compete for a common pool of cognitive resources. The finding rejects the strong form of object-based representation and supports the partial independence of spatial and temporal processing. Nevertheless, we also found that contextual factors, such as the way movements are organized and displayed, can further modulate the level of object-based representation and spatiotemporal integration. With the proliferation of location-based social media, it is of great importance to provide web users and mobile users with timely and high-quality information. In this light, we study the problem of continuous spatial keyword search over a stream of spatio-temporal messages by taking spatial relevance, textual relevance, and result diversification into consideration. We define a novel continuous query named Diversified Continuous Spatial Keyword (DCSK) query. A DCSK query consists of a spatial region, a set of query keywords, a similarity threshold 휃, and the number of query results k. Given a stream of spatio-temporal messages, the DCSK query continuously receive spatio-temporal messages such that: (1) they are located inside the query region and contain at least one query keyword, and (2) the similarities between each message and its previous k messages are all mess than 휃. Compared to traditional continuous spatial keyword query, the DCSK query can provide subscribers with spatio-temporal messages of higher quality because that the DCSK query takes both spatio-temporal relevance and query result diversification into consideration. We develop a Spatio-temporal Diversified Publish/Subscribe (STD-PS) framework to process a large number of DCSK queries efficiently. We conduct extensive experiments with real-world datasets. Displacements in typical monitoring applications occur in 3D but having sensors capable of measuring such 3D deformations with areal coverage is rare. One way could be to combine three or more line-of-sight measurements carried out from different locations at the same time and derive 3D displacement vectors. Automotive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output Synthetic Aperture Radar (MIMO-SAR) systems are of interest for such monitoring applications as they can acquire line-of-sight displacement measurements with areal coverage and are associated with low cost and high flexibility. In this paper, we present a set of algorithms deriving 3D displacement vectors from line-of-sight displacement measurements while applying spatial and temporal least squares adjustments. We evaluated the algorithms on simulated data and tested them on experimentally acquired MIMO-SAR acquisitions. The results showed that especially spatial parametric and non-parametric least squares adjustments worked very well for typical displacements occurring in geomonitoring and structural monitoring (e.g. tilting, bending, oscillating, etc.). The simulations were confirmed by an experiment, where a corner cube was moved step-wise. The results show that acquisitions of off-the-shelf automotive-grade MIMO-SAR systems can be combined to derive 3D displacement vectors with high accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extensive literature on university graduates' regional mobility highlights the importance of early mobility, but is primarily descriptive. We contribute to the identification of the effect of mobility upon high-school graduation on subsequent mobility across labour market regions. The data permit a novel identification strategy that uses the distance to university as an instrument. To ensure comparability, we select high-school graduates from only the suburban region of a large German agglomeration in a university graduate survey. We find that early mobility leads to a sizable increase in later labour mobility, which has implications for labour market efficiency and distributional policy concerns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay responds to David Imbroscio's "Beyond Opportunity Hoarding: Interrogating Its Limits as an Account of Urban Inequities" by suggesting questions that researchers might ask about opportunity hoarding if they considered the concept through a Black epistemic lens. I propose that investigating cultural, cognitive, and psychological commitments to hoarding as a key feature of Whiteness and racial capitalism might lead to insights on how to divest from and ultimately dismantle these systems. Many studies have focused on the role of the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) in spatial memory and spatial processing. However, more recently, studies have suggested that the functions of the MEC may extend beyond the spatial domain and into the temporal aspects of memory processing. The current study examined the effect of MEC lesions on spatial and nonspatial tasks that require rats to learn and remember information about location or stimulus-stimulus associations across short temporal gaps. MEC- and sham-lesioned male rats were tested on a watermaze delayed match to position (DMP) task and trace fear conditioning (TFC). Rats with MEC lesions were impaired at remembering the platform location after both the shortest (1 min) and the longest (6 h) delays on the DMP task, never performing as precisely as sham rats under the easiest condition and performing poorly at the longest delay. On the TFC task, although MEC-lesioned rats were not impaired at remembering the conditioning context, they showed reduced freezing in response to the previously associated tone. These findings suggest that the MEC plays a role in bridging temporal delays during learning and memory that extend beyond its established role in spatial memory processing.

Active haptic sensation is critical for object identification, but its neural circuit basis is poorly understood. We combined optogenetics, two-photon imaging, and high-speed behavioral tracking in mice solving a whisker-based object orientation discrimination task. We found that orientation discrimination required animals to summate input from multiple whiskers specifically along the whisker arc. Animals discriminated the orientation of the stimulus per se as their performance was invariant to the location of the presented stimulus. Populations of barrel cortex neurons summated across whiskers to encode each orientation. Finally, acute optogenetic inactivation of the barrel cortex and cell-type-specific optogenetic suppression of layer 4 excitatory neurons degraded performance, implying that infragranular layers alone are not sufficient to solve the task. These data suggest that spatial summation over an active haptic array generates representations of an object's orientation, which may facilitate encoding of complex three-dimensional objects during active exploration.

In a glance, observers can evaluate gist characteristics from crowds of faces, such as the average emotional tenor or the average family resemblance. Prior research suggests that high-level ensemble percepts rely on holistic and viewpoint-invariant information. However, it is also possible that feature-based analysis was sufficient to yield successful ensemble percepts in many situations. To confirm that ensemble percepts can be extracted holistically, we asked observers to report the average emotional valence of Mooney face crowds. Mooney faces are two-tone, shadow-defined images that cannot be recognized in a part-based manner. To recognize features in a Mooney face, one must first recognize the image as a face by processing it holistically. Across experiments, we demonstrated that observers successfully extracted the average emotional valence from crowds that were spatially distributed or viewed in a rapid temporal sequence. In a subsequent set of experiments, we maximized holistic processing by including only those Mooney faces that were difficult to recognize when inverted. Under these conditions, participants remained highly sensitive to the average emotional valence of Mooney face crowds. Taken together, these experiments provide evidence that ensemble perception can operate selectively on holistic representations of human faces, even when feature-based information is not readily available.
