Limnocharis flava is a noxious aquatic weed that poses a threat to paddy cultivation. The high cellulose and low lignin contents in this plant make it a potential raw material for papermaking. Against this backdrop, this study was taken up to develop Limnocharis flava (LF) based sheets containing natural fibres from Banana (B), Pineapple (P), and Rice Straw (RS) as reinforcing agents. The influence of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a binder on the LF-based sheets was also studied. To enhance the mechanical and moisture resistance properties, a chitosan coating was provided to the sheets. Analytical tests for mechanical properties, water barrier properties, functional groups, structure and microstructure, thermal properties and biodegradability were performed. Among the samples, LF + B showed the highest tensile strength (34.86 Mpa) and bursting strength (13.055 kg/cm2), while LF + R had higher puncture and tearing strengths. Chitosan coating was found to enhance the sheets and improve the water barrier properties mechanically. The contact angle of LF + B increased from 91.6° to 110.65°, while the water vapour transmission rate of LF reduced from 532.18 to 404.47 on providing chitosan coating. The significant interactions of reinforcing agents were confirmed by the results of FTIR and that of the coating by the SEM micrographs. The LF-based sheets were also found to have decent thermal stability. The high value of the crystallinity index in LF + R samples supported their remarkable mechanical properties. Kraft method, the most widely used method in pulp production, causes to various environmental problems. Therefore, environmentally friendly pulp production methods have been investigated. In recent years, environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as cooking liquor have been investigated. In this study, the possibilities of using a ternary DES (TDES) in pulp production from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) chips were investigated. TDES constituents were choline chloride (ChCl), lactic acid (LA), and glycerol (G). The effects of cooking temperature (145 °C and 155 °C) and cooking time (3 h, 3.5 h, and 4 h) on pulp and paper properties in TDES pulping were investigated. For comparison, kraft pulp from Scots pine was produced with conditions of 18% active alkali, 25% sulfidity, 155 °C cooking temperature, and 3.5 h cooking time. The highest lignin removal was obtained from TDES3 pulping conditions (155 °C and 4 h) with 76.0%. Lignin removal in the kraft pulp was 67.8%. TDES pulps were more quickly beaten to the target freeness level of 25°SR (the times for TDES3 and kraft pulps were 90 sec and 1350 sec, respectively.). Crystallinity index (CrI) values of kraft pulp and TDES3 pulp were 70.7% and 68.0%, respectively. TDES6 pulp had the highest pulp strength. But, the strength properties of all TDES pulps had lower than kraft pulp. The scientific literature supports the hypothesis of a disadvantage in students' performances when learning tasks are conducted in the digital mode in comparison to the paper one. Some studies suggest the need of investigating the role of individual cognitive functioning in digital reading and writing with special attention to those cognitive processes, such as Executive Functions (EF), which are acknowledged to control and affect learning and school adaptation. The present study aimed to: 1) investigate the differences in performances between paper and digital modalities in text reading and text writing in primary grade students; 2) analyse whether EF predict performances in paper and digital modalities; 3) explore whether any differences between paper and digital text comprehension or writing can be differently explained by EF depending on the children's learning performances. 175 typically developing Grades 3–5 students performed text comprehension and text writing tasks on computer and on paper and were assessed with EF tasks tapping inhibitory control, working memory and cognitive flexibility. The results showed no performance differences between digital and paper tasks at the group level apart from a higher text length in the digital than paper mode. However, children with low performances at the comprehension and writing tasks benefited more from the digital than the paper mode, in comparison to high performers that showed the opposite pattern. Additionally, low performers scored worse than high performers in most of the EF tasks. Lastly, working memory explained the digital-paper difference in text comprehension among low comprehenders as well as cognitive flexibility explained the difference in level of narrative complexity and number of words among low writers. The high demand for flexible electroconductive elements, such as organic coatings, is associated with the development of IoT devices, wearable health monitoring devices, and similar devices. To meet cost and environmental standards, the ideal coating should use the richness of nature, be biodegradable, and be water soluble to avoid the use of harmful organic solvents. All of these criteria are met by the composite coating consisting of sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Furthermore, the SLS/CNT coating on paper substrates is highly electroconductive, hydrophobic, and resistant to annealing, high humidity, bending, and scratching. The electrical conductivity of the SLS/CNT coating varies depending on the substrate used, but it is highly conductive and resistant on all substrates tested. Most importantly, due to the use of abundant and mass produced and cheap materials, the price of a coating containing 77 wt% SLS and 23 wt% CNT, with a sheet resistance of 113 Ω/sq is estimated to be around 2.05 EUR/m2. This coating can be especially beneficial for large-scale applications, such as heating films. Dissolved sulfide tends to species transformation and loss upon leaving the matrix, thus the development of a practical on-site determination of sulfide is crucial for environmental monitoring and human health. In this work, a novel paper-based ratiometric fluorescence sensor was developed for the field analysis of sulfide, which system was constructed by the inner filter effect (IFE) of CdS quantum dots (QDs) toward carbon dots (C-dots). Instead of an aqueous phase system, the conversion of sulfide to its hydride would induce the in-situ formation of CdS QDs on the paper, which acted as an energy acceptor to quench the emission of C-dots, leading to a variation of ratiometric fluorescence from blue to yellow with the increasing concentration of sulfide. Moreover, we proposed a smartphone-based fluorescence capture device integrated with a programmed Python program, accomplishing both color recognition and accurate detection of sulfide. Under the optimal condition, this ratiometric fluorescence sensor allowed for the on-site analysis of sulfide with a limit of detection of 0.05 μM. The accuracy of the sensor was validated via the successful field analysis of environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries. Compared to other fluorescence methods used for sulfide analysis, this developed system retains the advantages of label-free, low-cost, ease of operation, and miniaturization, showing great potential for the measurement of sulfide on-site, as well as environmental monitoring. This work focuses on a systematic method to produce Ag, Cu, and Ag/Cu metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in situ assisted with ultrasound on cellulose paper. By tuning the concentration of AgNO 3 and CuSO 4 salt precursors and ultrasound time, combined with a fixed concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent, it was possible to control the size, morphology, and polydispersity of the resulting MNPs on cellulose papers. Notably, high yield and low polydispersity of MNPs and bimetallic nanoparticles are achieved by increasing the sonication time on paper samples pre-treated with salt precursors before reduction with AA. Moreover, mechanical analysis on paper samples presenting well-dispersed and distributed MNPs showed slightly decreasing values of Young's modulus compared to neat papers. The strain at break is substantially improved in papers containing solely Ag or Cu MNPs. The latter suggests that the elastic/plastic transition and deformation of papers are tuned by cellulose and MNPs interfacial interaction, as indicated by mechanical analysis. The proposed method provides insights into each factor affecting the sonochemistry in situ synthesis of MNPs on cellulose papers. Although they are pegged to receive, emergencies occur with some frequency and sometimes cannot be "predicted" or even when emergency situations occur they become crucial and can save an organization from a harmful disbursement. However, most urgent purchases are oriented toward the low or inexistent planning, which, in addition to the economic factor in increasing the value of the good or the service, affects the areas involved, and even the image of the organization, the environmental and safety factors. Thus, the cause of emergencies becomes an indication and the negotiations can mean reduction of millions in expenses of large industries. Thus, the study became systemic in the emergency purchases of a large Brazilian pulp and paper producer, in addition, a methodology that allowed the reduction of planting and application costs. The Ottoman State was in a condition of insufficient preparation as it entered the First World War, which would determine its fate. This war had brought domestic production to a halt and created great obstacles to imported products. In this war, which started in 1914 and lasted for four years, the state suffered great losses in terms of economic, military, political and humanity, while the people behind the war suffered great scarcity. Especially in basic consumer products such as flour, milk, cheese and butter, prices increased excessively. This scarcity and price increase were not limited to food and other essential necessities. As a matter of fact, the scarcity of paper, which is a significant material in education, was felt seriously in this period. The fact that the available paper stocks were finished in a short time and the lack of paper caused the education, press and broadcasting activities to be disrupted. Even, the lack of paper reached the level that would prevent the usual activities in government offices. In this study, the paper scarcity that emerged in many parts of the state, especially in Istanbul during the war period between 1914-1918, attempts to supply the paper, the influences of the lack of paper and the activities of the Manager of the Government Printing Office, Mr. Ismail Hamit will be examined. This study examined the use of Plantago psyllium seed husk flour as paper additive with the aim of improving the properties of cellulose sheet. The husk flour was added in 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 20 wt% and 30 wt% to the cellulose suspensions and its effect on the handsheet properties was studied. The results showed that the direct addition of husk flour highly improves the mechanical properties of the handsheets like tensile index (with up to 400 %), burst index (with up to 600 %) and tear index (with up to 1200 %). Cobb and contact angle tests with distilled water showed that the handsheets containing husk flour are more hydrophobic compared to the unmodified handsheets. The Cobb-Unger and contact angle tests with oil revealed that the additive reduces the oil absorbency of the handsheets as well, at the highest by 86 %. Additionally, the water vapor and especially the air barrier properties were improved. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) antioxidant capacity test showed that the modified handsheets had free radical scavenging properties. The direct addition of Plantago psyllium seed husk flour can be a promising, easy and green method to improve the mechanical and barrier properties, oil and water resistance of cellulose sheets. The Škofiče manuscript, kept by the Diocesan Archives in Klagenfurt, was severely damaged and thus not available for users. The paper presents the methodology of choosing the correct conservation-restoration treatments and their execution. Damaged parts were restored in such manner that the existing structural elements, which had been added to the binding through time, were kept, adjusted and included into the binding restoration. Torn and missing parts of the pages of the book block were also restored. After these treatments, the book is again available for use. In June 2019, the Faculty of Arts of the University in Ljubljana and the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia organized an international scientific symposium "Works of Art on Parchment and Paper". Proceedings with 27 peer-reviewed articles were published in November 2019. Experts from the field of natural and humanistic sciences presented their results related to techniques of monuments' creation and their place in the time of creation; they presented relationships among artists and their audiences and presented problems of preservation, conservation, restoration and interpretation of art works on parchment and paper. The article gives a brief overview of the symposium and then focuses on the interconnection among humanistic and natural sciences and reflects the author's thoughts on the meaning and wholeness of research, knowledge collection and achievement of scientific goals. Transformer oil is widely used in high‐voltage transformers as a cooling and insulation medium. Electrical and thermal stresses expose transformer oil to degradation, which may produce dissolved decay products (DDPs) that are partially adsorbed on the insulation paper and accelerate the degradation of oil and paper. An evanescent field D‐shaped plastic optical fibre (POF) sensor was fabricated using the side‐polishing technique to detect DDPs in transformer oil. A laser light source and power meter were used in the prototype to measure the output power of the POF sensor. The measurement of DDPs was conducted on seven samples of insulating oil collected from the field. The sensor performance was evaluated based on different sensing areas, and the sensor sensitivity was measured. Results show an excellent correlation between the output power and DDPs. A correlation analysis was conducted amongst sensor output power, transformer oil refractive index and area under the absorbance curve. The performance of the sensor demonstrates improved linearity and sensitivity of 97.49% and 26.6779 µW/RIU, respectively. The focus of this research is the stabilisation of paper with Verdigris, a green copper pigment. Due to its corrosive effects on paper, many important documents, paintings and maps are in danger. The efficiency of several commercially available deacidification agents on paper samples with Verdigris was tested, including magnesium-based Bookkeeper® dispersion, nano calcium hydroxide containing Nanorestore® and CaLoSiL® dispersions as well as a recently developed dispersion of nano calcium carbonate. The antioxidant tetrabutylammonium bromide was tested either alone or in combination with nano calcium based deacidification agents. The effect of the treatments was evaluated using colour, tensile strength, degree of polymerization and pH measurements. The results indicate that acidic degradation does not play a major role during accelerated degradation of paper containing Verdigris with moderately acidic pH value and that oxidative decay could be the main culprit of the decay. The method described, which involves the use of antioxidant tetrabutylammonium bromide in combination with calcium carbonate based deacidification dispersion, was proved to have a superior effect against degradation of paper with Verdigris in comparison to the treatments which involve deacidification agents only. To investigate the effect of moisture content on the accuracy of the prediction model, accelerated ageing experiments were performed with different initial moisture content (IMC) in laboratory condition. Two types of multi-parameter lifetime prediction models, e.g. with and without consideration of IMC, were presented for comparison purpose. The authors found that a better accuracy for its prediction results could be achieved by establishing the prediction models with the consideration of IMC. Besides, models considering IMC have better economic feasibility than that without considering IMC(non-IMC) as its total cost is cheaper according to life cycle cost (LCC) calculations. In this work, we prepared novel cellulosic paper by incorporating tannin into the kraft pulp for potential application in active food packaging. The kraft pulp fibers were firstly periodate oxidized to obtain the dialdehyde cellulosic fibers, and then reacted with varied dosages of tannin to incorporate them into the fibers by covalent bondings between aldehyde groups on cellulose and active hydrogen on tannin. Handsheets were prepared using the tannin incorporated fibers through papermaking process and the properties were characterized. The percentage of tannin in the paper increased with the increase of the tannin dosage. FT-IR spectra confirmed the successful incorporation of tannin into the cellulosic fibers. It was found that paper after incorporation of tannin turned to be surface hydrophobic with contact angles higher than 90°, which may probably due to the covalent bonds between tannin and cellulose. The handsheets show high antioxidative and UV-shielding properties, which both increased with the increase of the tannin percentage in the paper. Water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) decreased after the incorporation of tannin, and this could facilitate its application in food packaging. The breaking length of tannin incorporated paper decreased insignificantly, less than 10% with the tannin percentage as high as 45%. Sandwich panels with a core of corrugated cardboard The goal of a research project of the Institute for Steel Construction and Materials Mechanics was to determine the utilization of corrugated cardboard as a core material for sandwich panels for roof and wall cladding. In contrast to common core materials, corrugated cardboard is recyclable and consists of renewable raw materials. The bearing behaviour depends mainly on the paper types and on the orientation of the anisotropic material inside the panel. The weakest orientation has similar stiffness and strength as common core materials. However, these can be exceeded many times by other core orientations. Investigations of the most important building physical parameters have shown that the fire behaviour is slightly better than that of most PU‐sandwich panels. The thermal conductivity in the weakest core orientation is comparable to that of mineral wool, the stronger core orientations show higher thermal conductivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Strongly degraded cellulosic artworks usually need deacidification and consolidation. Alkaline nanoparticles are known to be effective in neutralizing the acidity, while cellulose nanocrystals have the potential to be used as compatible and effective strengthening agents. We have grafted cellulose nanocrystals with oleic acid using a 1′1-carbonyldiimidazole-mediated procedure, to increase their dispersibility in organic solvents, and synthesized Ca(OH) 2 or CaCO 3 nanoparticles via a solvothermal process. Grafted nanocellulose and alkaline nanoparticles were used to prepare ethanol-based "hybrids". Prior to the application, the physico-chemical properties of nanocellulose dispersions and "hybrids" were studied by rheology and small-angle X-ray scattering. Cellulose nanocrystals were effectively grafted and stably dispersed in ethanol. It was shown that the use of ethanol as a dispersing medium, and the addition of alkaline nanoparticles act in a synergistic way, increasing the interactions between grafted cellulose nanocrystals, leading to the formation of clusters. These dispersions are thixotropic, a behavior particularly appealing to conservation purposes, since they can be applied in the liquid state, or, when a more confined application is required, they can be applied in a gel-like state. The hemp plant Cannabis sativa Linn, referring to industrial hemp, is a high-yielding annual industrial crop grown providing fibers from hemp stalk and oil from hemp seeds. Although hemp is a niche crop, hemp production is currently undergoing a renaissance. More than 30 countries grow hemp, with China being the largest hemp producing and exporting country. Europe and Canada are also important actors in the global hemp market. Traditionally, hemp as a fiber plant has been used for the production of apparels, fabrics, papers, cordages and building materials. The hurds, as waste by-product of fiber production, were used for bedding of animals, the seeds for human nutrition, e.g., as flour, and the oil for a wide range of purposes, from cooking to cosmetics. Hemp has also been an important crop throughout human history for medicine. Other more recent applications include materials for insulation and furniture, automotive composites for interior applications and motor vehicle parts, bioplastics, jewelry and fashion sectors, animal feed, animal bedding, and energy and fuel production. Foods containing hemp seed and oil are currently marketed worldwide for both animal and human nutrition. They also find applications in beverages and in neutraceutical products. Hemp oil is also used for cosmetics and personal care items, paints, printing inks, detergents and solvents. It is estimated that the global market for hemp consists of more than 25,000 products. Currently, the construction and insulation sector, paper and textile industries, and food and nutrition domains are the main markets while the cosmetics and automotive sector are growing markets. Innovative applications, e.g., in the medical and therapeutic domains, cosmeceuticals, phytoremediation, acoustic domain, wastewater treatment, biofuels, biopesticides and biotechnology, open new challenges. With increasingly complex neural network architectures and heterogeneous device characteristics, finding a reasonable graph partitioning and device placement strategy is challenging. There have been prior attempts at learned approaches for solving device placement, these approaches are computationally expensive, unable to handle large graphs consisting over 50000 nodes, and do not generalize well to unseen graphs. To address all these limitations, we propose an efficient single-shot, generalized deep RL method (SGDP) based on a scalable sequential attention mechanism over a graph neural network that is transferable to new graphs. On a diverse set of representative deep learning models, our method on average achieves 20% improvement over human placement and 18% improvement over the prior art with 15× faster convergence. We are the first to demonstrate super human performance on 8-layer recurrent neural network language model and 8-layer GNMT consisting of over 50000 nodes, on 8-GPUs. Coatings are generally applied for opacity, smoothness and gloss on the paper surface. Pigments such as CaCO3, Kaolin-Clay and Zeolite are used, and natural or synthetic binders are used. In this study, coatings using the CaCO3, Kaolin-Clay and Zeolite pigments on 80 gr/m2 high grade papers were made. PVOH was used as binder. Following coating, papers were processed through supercalendaring and printed with inkjet printer. Using INGEDE method 11p. recycling process printed papers were deinked. The optical properties of the recycled papers obtained after the deinking treatment, were compared with the unprinted papers. At the end of the study, the effect of coating on paper surface and the recycling performances of the inkjet printed papers were revealed. It was determined that the papers in which zeolite was used as a pigment were better, in terms of both surface properties and recycling performance when surface properties and recycling performance of coated papers were examined. When all the results were compared, it was found that the performances of coatings for which zeolite was used were much better than coatings such as CaCO3 and Kaolin-Clay, both in terms of surface coating properties such as opacity, roughness and gloss and recycling results such as brightness. Authentication devices transform cheap paper into legitimate documents. They are the sensory, informational, and computational features that make up valuable papers like banknotes and passports, and they provide the confidence required in moments of exchange and passage. These devices – which include techniques like watermarks and specialized threads, proprietary substrates and inks, or RFID chips – are the product of security printing, an industry that continuously reinvents the possibilities of paper. Importantly, these components protect paper things from counterfeiting, allowing it to function as an original and authentic copy and to do the logistical work of connecting quotidian materials to global networks. The value of valuable papers is therefore not purely extrinsic, socially or discursively established, but is also performed through its intrinsic material qualities. These are the authentication devices that are read, assessed, and trusted as paper things are circulated, and they are what securely connects paper to infrastructures of mobility. In conservation, the practical ability to implement treatment on objects of cultural heritage requires skills as an essential part of conservation expertise and constitutes an fundamental part of learning in conservation education. The acquisition of practical skills, which include cognitive and practical elements, is governed by laws that are primarily explained by means of organizational psychology and medicine where they have evolved in the form of step models. Stages of explicit and implicit knowledge are distinguished as well as factual-theoretical and practical-performative knowledge. Forms of learning are, in addition to guided learning, the experiment, the emergency, case studies and implicit forms of problem solving. The development of the expert can also be traced by the development of practical skills in five stages from beginner to expert. The restorer Johann Michael von Hermann (1793–1855), famous in the early nineteenth century, has long fallen into oblivion. A recent discovery of his work associated with old master prints at the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München has allowed a close study of his methods and skills as well as those of his pupil Ludwig Albert von Montmorillon (1794–1854), providing a fresh perspective on the early history of paper conservation. Von Hermann's method of facsimile inserts was praised by his contemporaries, before Max Schweidler (1885–1953) described these methods in 1938. The present article provides biographical notes on both nineteenth century restorers, gives examples of prints treated by them and adds a chapter of conservation history crediting them with a place in the history of the discipline. In summary, this offers a surprising insight on how works of art used to be almost untraceably restored by this team of Munich-based restorers more than 150 years before Schweidler. In this paper, I shall investigate whether Hegel can be considered as a sort of ancestor of McDowell's disjunctivism. If this hypothesis turns out to be plausible, then the paper offers two gains. On the one hand, it offers an innovative interpretation of the way in which Hegel conceives of our sensible epistemic access to the world. On the other hand, McDowell's own claim that his own theoretical proposal has a Hegelian sound is supported by a previously unexplored argument. I organize my analysis into three parts: I sketch McDowell's version of disjunctivism (Section 2); I analyze some passages from Hegel that I believe are important for showing some similarities between his and McDowell's argumentative strategy (Section 3); in the conclusion (Section 4), I highlight a number of core features that Hegel seems to share with McDowell's disjunctivism and I submit that they are sufficient to label Hegel the "grandfather" of McDowell's disjunctivism. Antimicrobial stewardship practices are critical in preventing the further erosion of treatment options for bacterial infections. Yet, at the same time, determination of an infection's antimicrobial susceptibility requires multiple rounds of culture and expensive lab automation systems. In this work, we report the use of paper-based surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors and portable instrumentation to phenotypically discriminate multi-drug resistance with fewer culture steps than conventional clinical microbiology. Specifically, we demonstrate the identification of resistance to varying generations of β -lactam antibiotics by detecting the activity of particular β -lactamase enzymes in a multiplexed assay. The method utilizes molecular reporters that consist of β -lactams with SERS barcodes. Hydrolysis of the β -lactam by β -lactamase enzymes in the sample expels the barcode; the released sulfur-containing barcode is then detected via SERS. Using this approach, we demonstrate the differentiation of E. coli strains with (1) extended spectrum β -lactamase (ESBL), (2) narrow-spectrum β -lactamase, and (3) no resistance, using only a single measurement on a single sample. In addition, we experimentally validate an approach to expand the library of reporters through the simple chemical synthesis of new barcoded β -lactams. Importantly, the reported method determines the susceptibility based on phenotypic β -lactamase activity, which is aligned with current microbiology lab standards. This new method will enable the precise selection of effective β -lactam antibiotics (as opposed to defaulting to drugs of last resort) faster than current methods while using simple steps and low-cost portable instrumentation. In order to assess the moisture content of wood chips on an industrial scale, readily applicable techniques are required. Thus, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used to estimate moisture in wood chips by means of partial least squares regressions. NIR spectra were obtained in spectrometer with an integrating sphere and optical fiber probe, on the longitudinal and transverse surface of Eucalyptus wood chips. The specimens had their masses and NIR spectra measured in 10 steps during drying from saturated to anhydrous condition. Principal Component Analysis was performed to explore the effect of moisture of wood chip on NIR signatures. The values of moisture content of chips were associated with the respective NIR spectra by Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS-R) and Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) to estimate the moisture content of wood chips and its moisture classes, respectively. Model developed from spectra recorded on the longitudinal face by the integrating sphere method presented statistics slightly better (R²cv = 0,96; RMSEcv = 7,15%) than model based on optical fiber probe (R²cv = 0,90; RMSEcv = 11,86%). This study suggests that for calibration of robust predictive model for estimating moisture content in chips the spectra should be recorded on the longitudinal surface of wood using the integrating sphere acquisition method. Nomex insulation paper has been widely used in mining dry type transformer insulation because of its excellent performance. However, the injection of space charge can affect the electrical properties of the Nomex paper and accelerate the ageing process of the insulation system, which causes the insulation system failure or even breakdown. Therefore, it is of great practical value to study the space charge characteristics of Nomex insulation paper in different hygrothermal ageing conditions. The accelerated hygrothermal ageing tests of Nomex insulation specimens with different initial moisture contents were conducted. The space charge distribution of specimens impregnated by varnish were measured by the pulsed electro‐acoustic method at different ageing stages. Simultaneously, the space charge characteristics during polarising and depolarising phases were deeply analysed. Experimental results show that negative charges accumulate between the varnish‐paper interface in specimens near the anode. The number of negative charges gradually decreases with the increase of ageing degree. Under the influence of humidity, Nomex paper can be hydrolysed, which increases the trap density and trap level. Finally, a large amount of positive and negative charges in aged specimens would result in the distortion of the local electric field, which could decrease the breakdown strength of Nomex insulation specimens and be a threat to transformer insulation. The research and development of new products that could partially or completely replace raw materials used for energy production, high value-added chemical products, and even the production of paper, has allowed industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) to become the main raw material for the reactivation of a bio-based economy with high production conditions and capacities. Based on this, the objective of this research is to deepen on the potential use of hemp fiber in the paper industry, supported by studies carried out by the Colombian State regarding the availability of forest crops for commercial purposes, which are basically used for planting and the production of wood resources such as pine and eucalyptus. It has been considered important to demonstrate that hemp, as a source of primary production, provides competitive economic, environmental, and social advantages over traditional crops, even for new sources of bio-based research. In the packaging sector of the printing industry, different coating applications are tried and investigated in order to increase the surface appearance and performance characteristics of paper and cardboard. The printability, water and ink absorption capacity, frictional resistance, light sensitivity of the visual graphical design that are going to be printed on the packaging papers are some of them. In this study, different types of cardboards that are used as a packaging material were chosen and coated with nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC)/PVA at different rates (%). In order to determine effective and economical usage conditions, the coating solutions, at three different concentrations as 3 wt.%, 5 wt. %, 7 wt.%, were prepared. The coating was applied on the test papers, which were at the same weights (350 g/m2) and had different surface properties as matte glossy, bright glossy, American Bristol. NCC/PVA existence on the coated paper surface was confirmed with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The impact of the coating, which was prepared at different concentrations, on the packaging materials was studied with respect to thickness, stiffness, water absorbability, contact angle and surface tension. Using disposable screen-printed electrodes is a convenient way of monitoring environmental pollution, production process control etc. Usually, commercially available screen-printed electrodes are used, but more and more studies are being carried out in the field of printing electrodes on thinner, low-cost and versatile substrates, including paper. In the present research, the comparison of screen-printed electrodes printed on different paper-based materials is presented. Two unique and innovative invasive plant-based papers made from (1) Japanese knotweed, (2) Canadian and Giant goldenrod and (3) commercially available cardboard were used as a printing material for the electrodes. The selected paper substrates were characterized, and screen-printed electrodes were printed. The influence of substrates' properties and pre- or post-treatment of the screen-printed electrodes on the electrochemical behaviour is thoroughly analyzed. The results indicate that the printing substrate (roughness) had the most significant influence on the cyclic voltammetry response. Comparing pre- and post-treatment of screen-printed electrodes, it was shown that grinding influenced the electrochemical activity significantly, while corona discharge does not have as significant influence. Besides, it was shown that the invasive plant-based papers are viable alternatives to commercially available papers and can be used as low-cost and eco-friendly alternatives for disposable screen-printed electrodes. A composite filler was developed by pre-flocculation of fiber fines and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) particles with flocculants such as cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM) and bentonite. The composite filler was compared with a conventional loading method in terms of physical properties of handsheet and filler retention. The handsheets using the composite filler showed higher strength properties than that using a conventional loading at a similar paper ash content level, implying that paper ash content can be increased maintaining same level of paper strength. Optical properties such as opacity and brightness of the paper with the composite were quite similar with the paper with the conventional loading. Filler retention of the composite filler was slightly higher than that of the conventional loading even though retention aids were not used for the composite filler. Paper formation of the composite filler was better than the case of the conventional loading. However, the sheet with the composite filler showed lower bulk than that with the conventional loading. Inkjet printing (IJP) is the most widespread direct‐write technique in paper electronics. However, this technique cannot be used for printing devices on untreated regular paper, since its low‐viscosity nanoinks leak through the cellulose fibers. Thus, a planarization coating is frequently used as a barrier, even though this makes substrates more expensive and less eco‐friendly. Alternatively, high solid content screen printing (SP) inks could allow printing on regular paper due to their high viscosity and large particle size; however, they cannot be printed through IJP. Another digital technique is then required: laser‐induced forward transfer (LIFT). This work aims at proving the feasibility of LIFT for printing devices on regular paper. The main transfer parameters are systematically varied to obtain uniform Ag‐SP interconnects, whose performance is improved by a multiple‐printing approach. It results in low resistances with much better performance than those typical of IJP. After optimizing the functionality of the printed lines, a proof‐of‐concept consisting of a radio‐frequency inductor is provided. The characterization of the device shows a substantially higher performance than that of the same device printed with IJP ink in similar conditions, which proves the potential of LIFT for digitally fabricating devices on regular paper. Terminalia catappa fibre dimensions were evaluated as raw material for pulp and paper production. Sapwood samples of T. catappa were collected from five matured trees with diameter at breast height (dbh) of 1.82m, 1.57m, 1.02m, 1.05m and 0.76m from stem portions of top, middle and base portions, respectively within Makurdi metropolis. The samples were air dried and sliver of 1cmx2cmx2cm dried sapwood were macerated in a test-tube containing equal volume of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide in ration 1:1 at 100oC for 24 hours. Macerated solution of fibre was dropped on a slide and mounted on a Zeiss light microscope (standard 25) under 80 xs. Fifteen straight and unbroken fibres were randomly selected to the fibre dimensions. Derived indices were determined with standard formula. Fibre lengths of T. catappa ranged from 0.72 - 1.80mm. Fibre diameter was between 20.76µm and 16.25µm; mean lumen width ranged from 12.78µm - 8.35µm while mean cell wall thickness were 3.85µm - 6.28µm at different dbh and stem portions. Means of all fibre dimensions were not significant (p>0.05). Results on fibre indices ranged from 0.65 - 1.05 in Runkel ratio; 34.53% - 60.09% elasticity coefficient; 16.07% - 32.89% in rigidity coefficient; 22.00 - 36.73 in slenderness ratio; 0.37 - 0.47 in Luce's shape factor; 39.20 - 64.22 in F factors and 236.71in - 296.15in Solid factor. Means of all derived fibre indices were not significant (p>0.05). Results obtained have substantially proved Terminalia catappa to be very good raw material for pulp and paper production. A computationally efficient method to study the in-plane and out-of-plane dimensional instability of thin paper sheets under the influence of moisture changes is presented. The method explicitly resolves the bonded and the free segments of fibers in the sheet, capturing the effect of anisotropic hygroexpansion at the fiber level. The method is verified against a volumetric model. The importance of longitudinal fiber hygroexpansion is demonstrated in spite of the absolute value of longitudinal hygroexpansion being an order of magnitude lower than the transverse hygroexpansion component. Finally, the method is used to demonstrate the formation of macroscopic sheet curl due to a moisture gradient in structurally uniform sheets in the absence of viscoelastic or plastic constitutive behavior and through-thickness residual stress profiles. This paper develops and motivates a unification theory of metaphysical explanation, or as I will call it, Metaphysical Unificationism. The theory's main inspiration is the unification account of scientific explanation, according to which explanatoriness is a holistic feature of theories that derive a large number of explananda from a meager set of explanantia, using a small number of argument patterns. In developing Metaphysical Unificationism, I will point out that it has a number of interesting (and to my mind, attractive) consequences. The view offers a novel conception of metaphysical explanation that doesn't rely on the notion of a "determinative" or "explanatory" relation; it allows us to draw a principled distinction between metaphysical and scientific explanations; it implies that naturalness and fundamentality are distinct but intimately related notions; and perhaps most importantly, it re-establishes the unduly neglected link between explanation and understanding in the metaphysical realm. A number of objections can be raised against the view, but I will argue that none of these is conclusive. This study analyzed the effect that pulp fibers have on the surface softness component of hygiene paper. The surface softness component has more of an influence on the evaluation of subjective softness results than the bulk softness component. Using the surface softness measurement technique, this study aimed to evaluate the effect that fibers have on the softness of hygiene paper substrate via objective numerical values to measure the surface softness component of hand sheets composed of various pulp species. The results indicate that coarseness effects had the largest effect on softness among the various fiber characteristics, such as average fiber length, width and coarseness. As fiber coarseness increased, a rough surface formed, which resulted in an increase in the mean deviation from the average friction (MMD). Nonwood fibers had long fiber length and low coarseness, which enables the production of hygiene paper with high strength and softness. Lining of canvases and paper artworks is a diffused conservation methodology developed to ensure the safe and long-term preservation of weakened supports. Lining systems are generally constituted by a new supporting material or a package of new materials glued to the original artefact. This paper reports on the study of the mechanical behaviour of four multi-layered paper and canvas composites, proposed as lining systems for a large drawing on paper: the "School of Athens" by Raffaello Sanzio, dated 1508. This masterpiece is the 1:1 preparatory cartoon for the wall-painting in the Vatican rooms. Uniaxial tensile testing has been employed in this study to characterize both the single layer materials and the overall mechanical behaviour of the composites. The mechanical tests have been performed before and after artificial ageing with high humidity regime. The complex testing protocol allowed selecting the best performing composite for the final lining, and to assess a safety threshold in terms of stress value for the framing and display of the restored artwork in the new showcase. The synthesis of few-layer graphene from graphite typically uses N, N methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) or dimethylformamide (DMF) due to the strong affinity of both solvents for graphite. However, NMP and DMF are known as carcinogens and a long-time exposure to these substances may subject users to potential risk of major health issue later. Therefore, a replacement with dispersing solvent that is not only harmless but also able to exfoliate graphite at an excellent concentration yield must be outlined for a sustainable mass-production of graphene. In this work, we have successfully exfoliated graphite to few-layer graphene with a recorded yield concentration of up to 0.75°mg/ml (2.5°h) just by using extracted red spinach/water mixture as an exfoliating medium. The prepared graphene was found to possess less structural defect (I D /I G : 0.5) and high C/O ratio (6.8) and can be used further as an electrical conductive ink for smart "Sticky Note" sensor. The fabricated device was able to detect strain and temperature with gauge factor and temperature coefficient resistance of 23.5 and −32.14 × 10-4°Ω/°;C, respectively. We believe that this study would be useful for the preparation of environmental-friendly graphene that is not only strain and thermally sensitive but also producible at low -cost. Transformer winding hot‐spot temperature (HST) is one of the important factors affecting transformer oil–paper insulation deterioration. This study presents a three‐dimensional coupled electromagnetic‐fluid‐thermal analysis method for HST calculation in a 10 kV oil‐immersed distribution transformer, the influence of the transformer internal metal structure parts on the HST of the winding is considered in the simulation. Combining electromagnetic‐field calculation with no‐load test and load test of the transformer provides a more accurate method to determine internal losses of the transformer. Taking those power losses as heat sources, the transformer fluid‐thermal field analysis is conducted with the finite volume method. The variation of physical parameters of transformer oil with temperature is considered in the simulation. On the basis of the equivalent thermal resistance theory, the equivalent thermal conductivities of transformer windings are obtained. The simulation results deduced from the proposed method agree well with the experimental ones, which are obtained with fibre optic temperature sensors during the transformer temperature rise test, the maximum temperature difference is <3°C. Introduction. The aim of research -- to determine the effect of clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) essential oil on paper packaging materials. Materials and methods. Three packaging materials have been studied based on paper coated with clary sage essential oil. The chemical composition of the clary sage essential oil is determined chromatographically. Antimicrobial effect of essential oil was determined against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and fungi using the agar diffusion method. Results and discussion. The chemical composition of the clary sage essential oil showed a predominant amount of oxygenated monoterpenes (83.43%), followed by monoterpene hydrocarbons (7.86%), and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (5.16%). The major components of the clary sage essential oil were linalyl acetate, β-linalool, α- terpineol, limonene, and geranyl acetate that determined the antimicrobial action of the oil. The essential oil exhibited a fungicidal action against the tested molds and yeasts. Its high antimicrobial properties could be probably due to the high content of linalyl acetate (40.31%) and β-linalool (22.72%). Our results showed high fungicidal efficacy for the three types of packaging materials. The suppressive action against C. albicans during the investigated shelf life period was about 100%. It was found a high efficiency of the recycled paper against A. brasiliensis (99.2% - 81.9%). It was determined that the bactericidal effect of the tested packaging materials was lower than the Gram-negative bacterium S. abony. Conclusions. Clary sage essential oil could be used as an antimicrobial agent in the food industry due to its antimicrobial properties, in order to improve the quality of the products and extend their shelf life. Drying of paper during 2000–2018 is reviewed. The review includes new drying processes, multi-cylinder dryers, tissue and impingement drying, TAD-drying, infrared drying and energy use for drying of paper. It includes general aspects of infrared dryers but not drying of coated papers. Paper quality aspects, paper shrinkage and paper isotherms are not included. Impingement drying has been the most successful new technology with several applications while others such as impulse drying has not been commercialized mainly due to problems with paper quality parameters. One promising development is the introduction of steel instead of cast iron cylinders with increased heat transfer reducing the number of cylinders. Future research should focus on modeling the internal transport phenomena and to couple these phenomena to paper shrinkage and quality parameters. The influence of the fabric for the drying process needs more attention, understanding the drying process for new components such as microfibrillar cellulose in the stock and reducing energy use and increasing the amount of renewable energies for drying of paper. Terminalia catappa fibre dimensions were evaluated as raw material for pulp and paper production. Sapwood samples of T. catappa were collected from five matured trees with diameter at breast height (dbh) of 1.82m, 1.57m, 1.02m, 1.05m and 0.76m from stem portions of top, middle and base portions, respectively within Makurdi metropolis. The samples were air dried and sliver of 1cmx2cmx2cm dried sapwood were macerated in a test-tube containing equal volume of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide in ration 1:1 at 100oC for 24 hours. Macerated solution of fibre was dropped on a slide and mounted on a Zeiss light microscope (standard 25) under 80 xs. Fifteen straight and unbroken fibres were randomly selected to the fibre dimensions. Derived indices were determined with standard formula. Fibre lengths of T. catappa ranged from 0.72 - 1.80mm. Fibre diameter was between 20.76µm and 16.25µm; mean lumen width ranged from 12.78µm - 8.35µm while mean cell wall thickness were 3.85µm - 6.28µm at different dbh and stem portions. Means of all fibre dimensions were not significant (p>0.05). Results on fibre indices ranged from 0.65 - 1.05 in Runkel ratio; 34.53% - 60.09% elasticity coefficient; 16.07% - 32.89% in rigidity coefficient; 22.00 - 36.73 in slenderness ratio; 0.37 - 0.47 in Luce's shape factor; 39.20 - 64.22 in F factors and 236.71in - 296.15in Solid factor. Means of all derived fibre indices were not significant (p>0.05). Results obtained have substantially proved Terminalia catappa to be very good raw material for pulp and paper production. Combining recycling of paper wastes (WPs) with extrusion‐based additive manufacturing represents a sustainable route to cellular cellulose composites tailored for lightweight construction. Particularly, shear mixing of shredded WPs with an aqueous solution of a polymer binder like polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) yields aqueous pastes suitable for 3D printing. As a shear thinning additive, both WP and microfibrillated cellulose account for enhanced shear thinning and dimensional stability. Opposite to the formation of dense WP/PVA composites by melt extrusion, 3D printing of aqueous pastes produces cellular cellulose/PVA composites exhibiting hierarchical pore architectures. In spite of low densities around 0.8 g cm−3, high Young's modulus (2.0 GPa) and tensile strength (53 MPa) are achieved. Mechanical stability, water resistance, and even flame retardancy simultaneously improve by crosslinking with glyoxal and especially by mineralization. Multimaterial 3D printing combines the 3D dispensing of cellulose/PVA pastes with the simultaneous, staged, or subsequent spraying of aqueous water glass to enable mineralization of composite surface, bulk, and interlayers. Furthermore, the glyoxal‐mediated crosslinking affords thermo‐ and moisture‐responsive cellulose/PVA composites with programmable shape change induced either by heating at 100 °C or by exposure to moisture at 37 °C.
