Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies ,Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
The Euclid mission will conduct an extragalactic survey over 15000 deg$^2$ of the extragalactic sky. The spectroscopic channel of the Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) has a resolution of $R\sim450$ for its blue and red grisms that collectively cover the $0.93$--$1.89 $\micron;range. NISP will obtain spectroscopic redshifts for $3\times10^7$ galaxies for the experiments on galaxy clustering, baryonic acoustic oscillations, and redshift space distortion. The wavelength calibration must be accurate within $5$\AA to avoid systematics in the redshifts and downstream cosmological parameters. The NISP pre-flight dispersion laws for the grisms were obtained on the ground using a Fabry-Perot etalon. Launch vibrations, zero gravity conditions, and thermal stabilisation may alter these dispersion laws, requiring an in-flight recalibration. To this end, we use the emission lines in the spectra of compact planetary nebulae (PNe), which were selected from a PN data base. To ensure completeness of the PN sample, we developed a novel technique to identify compact and strong line emitters in Gaia spectroscopic data using the Gaia spectra shape coefficients. We obtained VLT/X-SHOOTER spectra from $0.3$ to $2.5$ \micron;for 19 PNe in excellent seeing conditions and a wide slit, mimicking Euclid's slitless spectroscopy mode but with 10 times higher spectral resolution. Additional observations of one northern PN were obtained in the $0.80$--$1.90$ \micron range with the GMOS and GNIRS instruments at the Gemini North observatory. The collected spectra were combined into an atlas of heliocentric vacuum wavelengths with a joint statistical and systematic accuracy of 0.1 \AA in the optical and 0.3 \AA in the near-infrared. The wavelength atlas and the related 1D and 2D spectra are made publicly available., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
The Euclid mission of the European Space Agency will perform a survey of weak lensing cosmic shear and galaxy clustering in order to constrain cosmological models and fundamental physics. We expand and adjust the mock Euclid likelihoods of the MontePython software in order to match the exact recipes used in previous Euclid Fisher matrix forecasts for several probes: weak lensing cosmic shear, photometric galaxy clustering, the cross-correlation between the latter observables, and spectroscopic galaxy clustering. We also establish which precision settings are required when running the Einstein-Boltzmann solvers CLASS and CAMB in the context of Euclid. For the minimal cosmological model, extended to include dynamical dark energy, we perform Fisher matrix forecasts based directly on a numerical evaluation of second derivatives of the likelihood with respect to model parameters. We compare our results with those of other forecasting methods and tools. We show that such MontePython forecasts agree very well with previous Fisher forecasts published by the Euclid Collaboration, and also, with new forecasts produced by the CosmicFish code, now interfaced directly with the two Einstein-Boltzmann solvers CAMB and CLASS. Moreover, to establish the validity of the Gaussian approximation, we show that the Fisher matrix marginal error contours coincide with the credible regions obtained when running Monte Carlo Markov Chains with MontePython while using the exact same mock likelihoods. The new Euclid forecast pipelines presented here are ready for use with additional cosmological parameters, in order to explore extended cosmological models., Comment: 45 pages, 24 figures

Understanding and mastering the mechanical properties of metallic nanoparticles is crucial for their use in a wide range of applications. In this context, we use atomic-scale (Molecular Dynamics) and continuous (Finite Elements) calculations to investigate in details gold nanoparticles under deformation. By combining these two approaches, we show that the elastic properties of such nanoobjects are driven by their size but, above all, by their shape. This outcome was achieved by introducing a descriptor in the analysis of our results enabling to distinguish among the different nanoparticle shapes studied in the present work. In addition, other transition-metal nanoparticles have been considered (copper and platinum) using the aforementioned approach. The same strong dependence of the elastic properties with the shape was revealed, thus highlighting the universal character of our achievements.

Many are the ways of engineering the band gap of nanoribbons including application of stress, electric field and functionalization of the edges. In this article, we investigate separately the effects of these methods on armchair graphene and boron nitride nanoribbons. By means of density functional theory calculations, we show that, despite their similar structure, the two materials respond in opposite ways to these stimuli. By treating them as perturbations of a heteroatomic ladder model based on the tight-binding formalism, we connect the two behaviours to the different symmetries of the top valence and bottom conduction wave functions. These results indicate that opposite and complementary strategies are preferable to engineer the gapwidth of armchair graphene and boron nitride nanoribbons.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
In this work, we combine electron microscopy measurements of the surface compositions in Cu-Au nanoparticles and atomistic simulations to investigate the effect of gold segregation. While this mechanism has been extensively investigated within Cu-Au in the bulk state, it was never studied at the atomic level in nanoparticles. By using energy dispersive X-ray analysis across the (100) and (111) facets of nanoparticles, we provide evidence of gold segregation in Cu$_{3}$Au and CuAu$_{3}$ nanoparticles in the 10 nm size range grown by epitaxy on a salt surface with high control of the nanoparticles morphology. To get atomic-scale insights into the segregation properties in Cu-Au nanoparticles on the whole composition range, we perform Monte Carlo calculations employing $N$-body interatomic potentials. These simulations confirm this effect by showing a complete segregation of Au in the (100) and (111) faces of a truncated octahedron for gold nominal composition of the alloy above 70\% and 60\% respectively. Furthermore, we show that there is no size effect on the segregation behaviour since we evidence the same oscillating concentration profile from surface to the nanoparticles core as in the bulk. These results can shed new lights in the interpretation of the enhanced reactivity, selectivity and stability of Cu-Au nanoparticles in various catalytic reactions.

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
This work focuses on the pilot run of a simulation campaign aimed at investigating the spectroscopic capabilities of the Euclid Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP), in terms of continuum and emission line detection in the context of galaxy evolutionary studies. To this purpose we constructed, emulated, and analysed the spectra of 4992 star-forming galaxies at $0.3 \leq z \leq 2.5$ using the NISP pixel-level simulator. We built the spectral library starting from public multi-wavelength galaxy catalogues, with value-added information on spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting results, and from Bruzual and Charlot (2003) stellar population templates. Rest-frame optical and near-IR nebular emission lines were included using empirical and theoretical relations. We inferred the 3.5$\sigma$ NISP red grism spectroscopic detection limit of the continuum measured in the $H$ band for star-forming galaxies with a median disk half-light radius of \ang{;;0.4} at magnitude $H= 19.5\pm0.2\,$AB$\,$mag for the Euclid Wide Survey and at $H = 20.8\pm0.6\,$AB$\,$mag for the Euclid Deep Survey. We found a very good agreement with the red grism emission line detection limit requirement for the Wide and Deep surveys. We characterised the effect of the galaxy shape on the detection capability of the red grism and highlighted the degradation of the quality of the extracted spectra as the disk size increases. In particular, we found that the extracted emission line signal to noise ratio (SNR) drops by $\sim\,$45$\%$ when the disk size ranges from \ang{;;0.25} to \ang{;;1}. These trends lead to a correlation between the emission line SNR and the stellar mass of the galaxy and we demonstrate the effect in a stacking analysis unveiling emission lines otherwise too faint to detect., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
We investigate the cosmological constraints that can be expected from measurement of the cross-correlation of galaxies with cosmic voids identified in the Euclid spectroscopic survey, which will include spectroscopic information for tens of millions of galaxies over $15\,000$ deg$^2$ of the sky in the redshift range $0.9\leq z<1.8$. We do this using simulated measurements obtained from the Flagship mock catalogue, the official Euclid mock that closely matches the expected properties of the spectroscopic data set. To mitigate anisotropic selection-bias effects, we use a velocity field reconstruction method to remove large-scale redshift-space distortions from the galaxy field before void-finding. This allows us to accurately model contributions to the observed anisotropy of the cross-correlation function arising from galaxy velocities around voids as well as from the Alcock-Paczynski effect, and we study the dependence of constraints on the efficiency of reconstruction. We find that Euclid voids will be able to constrain the ratio of the transverse comoving distance $D_{\rm M}$ and Hubble distance $D_{\rm H}$ to a relative precision of about $0.3\%$, and the growth rate $f\sigma_8$ to a precision of between $5\%$ and $8\%$ in each of four redshift bins covering the full redshift range. In the standard cosmological model, this translates to a statistical uncertainty $\Delta\Omega_\mathrm{m}=\pm0.0028$ on the matter density parameter from voids, better than can be achieved from either Euclid galaxy clustering and weak lensing individually. We also find that voids alone can measure the dark energy equation of state to $6\%$ precision., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, accepted version

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are promising materials for classical and quantum light emission. To understand these outstanding properties, a thorough analysis of the band-edge exciton emission is needed which is not reachable in ensemble and room temperature studies because of broadening effects. Here, we report on a cryogenic-temperature study of the photoluminescence of single CsPbBr$_3$ NCs in the intermediate quantum confinement regime. We reveal the size-dependence of the spectral features observed: the bright-triplet exciton energy splittings, the trion and biexciton binding energies as well as the optical phonon replica spectrum. In addition, we show that bright triplet energy splittings are consistent with a pure exchange model and that the variety of polarisation properties and spectra recorded can be rationalised simply by considering the orientation of the emitting dipoles and the populations of the emitting states.

Quantum Physics - Abstract
In the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era, quantum error mitigation will be a necessary tool to extract useful performance out of quantum devices. However, there is a big gap between the noise models often assumed by error mitigation techniques and the actual noise on quantum devices. As a consequence, there arises a gap between the theoretical expectations of the techniques and their everyday performance. Cloud users of quantum devices in particular, who often take the devices as they are, feel this gap the most. How should they parametrize their uncertainty in the usefulness of these techniques and be able to make judgement calls between resources required to implement error mitigation and the accuracy required at the algorithmic level? To answer the first question, we introduce hypothesis testing within the framework of quantum error mitigation and for the second question, we propose an inclusive figure of merit that accounts for both resource requirement and mitigation efficiency of an error mitigation implementation. The figure of merit is useful to weigh the trade-offs between the scalability and accuracy of various error mitigation methods. Finally, using the hypothesis testing and the figure of merit, we experimentally evaluate $16$ error mitigation pipelines composed of singular methods such as zero noise extrapolation, randomized compilation, measurement error mitigation, dynamical decoupling, and mitigation with estimation circuits. In total our data involved running $275,640$ circuits on two IBM quantum computers., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 8 tables

Mining operations generate a significant quantity of mining waste in the form of sterile rocks and processing residues. These mining wastes are typically placed on the surface and can cause geotechnical and geochemical disturbances, as well as contaminants in surface water (through runoff) and groundwater (through infiltration), thus posing environmental risks. This article aimed to characterize the geotechnical properties of lead-silver ore processing residues at the Auzelles site in order to assess their stability and propose recommendations for their management and rehabilitation. The adopted methodology included in situ tests (such as density measurement and permeability) and laboratory analyses (grain size distribution, moisture content, methylene blue test, direct shear test, and standard Proctor test). The results showed a wet density of 1.63 g/cm3 for the residues compared with 1.65 g/cm3 for the waste rock, as well as a permeability of the residues measured at 5.5 × 10-5 m/s, indicating significant drainage capacity. Laboratory analyses revealed that the samples were primarily composed of very silty sands and gravel, classified as B5 according to the Guide to Road Settlements. The cohesion of the residues was found to be zero, while the internal friction angle varied between 28° for the residues and 30° for the foundation soils. These geomechanical properties, particularly density, lack of cohesion, and friction angle values, raise concerns about the long-term stability of the residues. Due to their high permeability and lack of cohesion, the residues are susceptible to mass movement and erosion, which may exacerbate contamination risks. Therefore, it is essential to integrate these parameters into any potential residue stability analysis. Proactive management, based on these results, requires the implementation of appropriate rehabilitation techniques, such as drainage optimization and incorporation of vegetation covers, to minimize environmental impacts and ensure the long-term sustainability of mining waste structures.

big five personality traits ,knowledge acquisition ,knowledge application ,academic librarians ,pakistan ,Bibliography. Library science. Information resources - Abstract
This study investigated the effect of the Big Five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness) on knowledge acquisition and application by Pakistani university librarians. To increase their impact in academic institutions, it is imperative to examine how people acquire and apply knowledge within the field of librarianship. This study employed a quantitative research approach based on the survey research method. The Big Five personality inventory designed by John and Srivastava was adopted, however, measurement items related to knowledge acquisition and application behavior were developed with the help of the existing literature. The study population comprised academic librarians working in the university libraries of Pakistan, with a census sampling method used to collect data and 357 completed questionnaires received. The results indicated that extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experience positively affect the university librarian’s knowledge acquisition, while neuroticism has a negative effect. The findings also revealed that extraversion and openness to experience positively affects academic librarians’ knowledge application behavior while neuroticism has a negative effective, however, conscientiousness and agreeableness personality traits were found to be insignificant predictors of the same. This study highlights the significant personality features contributing to knowledge acquisition and application behavior in academic libraries from a developing country’s perspective.

Aim of the study: Land-use systems have a significant impact on environmental, economic, and societal issues worldwide. With agricultural activities, urban development, and conservation efforts, the complex nature of land use influences key global challenges, including climate change, food security, and biodiversity loss. As the world confronts these issues, it is essential to understand the trends, innovations, and emerging frontiers in land use systems. These developments not only reflect the evolving relationship between humans and the environment but also offer potential pathways toward sustainability and resilience. Material and methods: This study uses R’s Biblioshiny package to critically examine an extensive bibliographic database of 1814 publications on global land use systems development and sustainability (GLUSDS) from the Web of Science (WoS). Results and conclusions: Findings indicate that the scientific productivity of GLUSDS has been increasing between 2004 and 2023. The five most influential sources, constituting ‘Sustainability’, ‘Land Use Policy’, ‘Land’, ‘Science of the Total Environment’ and ‘Ecological Indicators’ produce and disseminate information that drives policy responses, innovations and future research perspectives. Similarly, the most cited papers demonstrate the complexity and encompassing nature of land use systems development and sustainability. There was a low (high) level of cooperation between (among) the leading scholars in the field. Compared to emerging nations, industrialised nations such as China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany have a far greater impact on land use science. Current research trends demonstrate the utilization of ‘digital technologies (DTs)’ through the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and integrated remote sensing techniques, Geo-detectors, regression models, artificial intelligence, as well as social and economic models to comprehensively identify, monitor and advance knowledge in land use science, management and sustainability. Thus, we support initiatives like ‘Citizen Science’ that promote the adoption of cutting-edge theories, methods, instruments, and procedures that support the sustainable use of lands and other natural resources. Limited scientific investments and productivity from industrialized and emerging nations call for further studies in land system science and management.

In this work, we investigate the existence, uniqueness, and different stability types, focusing on Ulam-Hyers stability, of a solution to a nonlinear fuzzy fractional differential equation with Caputo generalized Hukuhara differentiability of order ℘ ∈ (n − 1, n). We establish explicit criteria to guarantee both the existence and uniqueness of the solution, employing the Banach fixed point theorem. Additionally, we present two examples to enhance the illustration of our findings.

We address the challenge of producing trustworthy and accurate compact models for edge devices. While Knowledge Distillation (KD) has improved model compression in terms of achieving high accuracy performance, calibration of these compact models has been overlooked. We introduce BD-KD (Balanced Divergence Knowledge Distillation), a framework for logit-based online KD. BD-KD enhances both accuracy and model calibration simultaneously, eliminating the need for post-hoc recalibration techniques, which add computational overhead to the overall training pipeline and degrade performance. Our method encourages student-centered training by adjusting the conventional online distillation loss on both the student and teacher losses, employing sample-wise weighting of forward and reverse Kullback-Leibler divergence. This strategy balances student network confidence and boosts performance. Experiments across CIFAR10, CIFAR100, TinyImageNet, and ImageNet datasets, and various architectures demonstrate improved calibration and accuracy compared to recent online KD methods.
