Objective To obtain insights into reducing the shortfall in financing for pandemic preparedness and response measures, and reducing the risk of another pandemic with social and economic costs comparable to those of the coronavirus disease. Methods We conducted a systematic scoping review using the databases ScienceDirect, Scopus, JSTOR, PubMed® and EconLit. We included articles published in any language until 1 August 2023, and excluded grey literature and publications on epidemics. We categorized eligible studies according to the elements of a framework proposed by the World Health Organization Council on the Economy of Health for All: (i) root/structural causes; (ii) social position/foundations; (iii) infrastructure and systems; and (iv) communities, households and individuals. Findings Of the 188 initially identified articles, we included 60 in our review. Most (53/60) were published after 2020, when academic interest had shifted towards global financing mechanisms. Most (37/60) addressed two or more of the council framework elements. The most frequently addressed element was infrastructure and systems (54/60), discussing topics such as health systems, financial markets and innovation ecosystems. The roots/structural causes were discussed in 25 articles; communities, households and individuals in 22 articles; and social positions/foundations in 11. Conclusion Our review identified three important gaps: a formal definition of pandemic preparedness and response, impeding the accurate quantification of the financing shortfall; research on the extent to which financing for pandemic preparedness and response has been targeted at the most vulnerable households; and an analysis of specific financial instruments and an evaluation of the feasibility of their implementation. Objective: Assessment of predictive values of clinical symptoms for COVID-19 diagnosis in young adults. Participants: Nonresidential university students (ages 18–25) participating in surveillance testing and mandatory symptom survey between 9/9/2020 and 11/25/2020. Methods: Retrospective study of test results and symptom survey data. Results: Among 6,489 individuals, 288 (4.4%) tested positive for COVID-19, 90 (31.3%) of whom reported symptoms. COVID-19 prevalence among individuals reporting and not reporting symptoms was 17.2% and 3.3%, respectively. The four symptoms with highest positive predictive values (PPVs) were smell/taste loss (PPV = 38.5%), chills (PPV = 31.5%), muscle/joint pain (PPV = 26.0%), and fever (PPV = 25.9%). Conclusions: Institutions should emphasize COVID-19 risk for highly predictive symptoms in public health messaging to inform individuals on when to seek testing or self-isolation. However, low COVID-19 diagnostic accuracy of clinical symptoms and the high pre-symptomatic/asymptomatic rate (69%) highlight the limitations of voluntary testing strategies employed by higher education institutions during the original strain of SARS-CoV-2. With the growing use of artificial intelligence, search engine providers are increasingly pushing advertisers to use automated bidding strategies based on machine learning. Such automated decision‐making systems leave advertisers in the dark about the data being used and how they can influence the outcome of the decision‐making process. Previous literature on artificial intelligence lacks an understanding of the dangers related to artificially intelligent systems and their lack of transparency. In response, our paper addresses the inherent risks of the automated optimization of advertisers' bidding strategies in search engine advertising. The selected empirical case of a service company therefore demonstrates how data availability can trigger a long‐term decline in advertising performance and how search engine advertising performance metrics develop before and after an event of data scarcity. Based on data collected for 525 days, difference‐in‐differences analysis shows that the algorithmic approach has a considerable and lasting negative impact on advertising performance. Furthermore, the empirical case indicates that self‐regulated learning can initialize a downward spiral that gradually impairs advertising performance. Thus, the aim of this study is to increase awareness regarding automated decision‐making dangers in search engine advertising and help advertisers take preventive measures to reduce the risks of algorithm missteps. The article discusses the 1988 report "The Future of Public Health" from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) which concluded that the governmental public health in the U.S. is a system in disarray. Cited are work done to strengthen academic-practice linkages since 1988 report, how the absence of financial and organizational renaissance continues to hinder capacity of the public health profession, and work that remains unfinished from the IOM reports.

Team‐based organizational structures have been widely adopted in tourism and hospitality firms. Based on socio‐technical systems theory, this study focused on two critical components of team design: team‐level autonomy and task interdependence. The impacts of these elements on team outcomes vary by context (e.g., organizations and task types). Exploration of these features' relationships with teamwork processes in tourism and hospitality settings is thus warranted. This study took a social process (i.e., team communication) as a mediating mechanism to explain team‐level organizational phenomena. A total of 312 responses from tourism and hospitality employees were collected through Qualtrics. Structural equation modeling using the R Lavaan package showed that team‐level autonomy and task interdependence were positively and indirectly related to team performance through team communication. Also, their interaction was positively associated with team outcomes. These findings contribute to the team effectiveness literature and provide tourism and hospitality organizations with practical guidance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To review the physical activity promotion efforts of Power 5 conference institutions' summer transition programs. Methods: The websites of Power 5 Conference and affiliate member institutions (N = 78) were systematically reviewed and information on summer transition programs pertaining to health were extracted. Results: Most (n = 45, 57.7%) institutions had a summer transition program of some kind. Among those who had summer transition programs, 14 (31.1%) had a nonphysical activity health course (i.e. health and/or nutrition), while courses that incorporated a physical activity component were uncommon (n = 6, 13.3%). Only two institutions covered physical activity, nutrition, and health in at least one offered course. Conclusions: There is an opportunity for tertiary institution-level summer transitional programs to expand coverage to address a currently unmet need for physical activity promotion while avoiding perpetuation of existing inequities. This study analyzed the content, visual features, and audience engagement data of Instagram posts from two mental health organizations over one year (N = 725). For content features, mental health literacy and communicative strategies were examined. Posts that promoted knowledge of mental disorders and treatments, used information and community strategy were more likely to receive higher audience engagement. Visual features of demographic segments, visual composition, and visual framing topics were analyzed. Images that covered an unspecific population, used illustrated images, and focused on anti-stigma topical frames obtained more engagement. Theoretical contributions and practical applications regarding visual message design and management on social media to promote mental health are also offered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The Joint Surgery-Thoracic Surgery (JS-TS) pathway began as a pilot program to grant both general surgery (GS) residency and thoracic surgery (TS) fellowship credit for 12 months of the PGY-4 and 5 years. This review updates the outcomes of this novel program. STUDY DESIGN: GS and TS programs in all approved JS-TS institutions were contacted for data collection, including JS-TS enrollee demographics and GS and TS case logs (CLs). National GS and TS CL data, and program and institutional data were publicly available. Enrollee case numbers were compared with those of their contemporaries. The American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery provided certification data. Only enrollees who completed GS through 2019 were included. RESULTS: There were 90 JS-TS enrollees in 14 institutions. Two enrollees withdrew and 1 had not completed TS at the time of data collection leaving 87 for analysis. GS CLs were available for all 87 enrollees. TS CLs were available for all 62 enrollees who completed fellowship in 2016 or later. In GS, enrollees recorded fewer cases than their contemporary PGY-5s nationally in all domains except thoracic and endocrine. In TS, mean enrollee case numbers exceeded those of national contemporaries in every major category. Sixty-two JS-TS enrollees have achieved American Board of Surgery certification. Eighty-two enrollees are American Board of Thoracic Surgery certified with 5 currently in the certification process. CONCLUSIONS: The JS-TS pathway has proven a successful alternative route for TS training and could be a blueprint for other specialties considering novel avenues to specialty training. This study aimed to explore the factors that affect the severity and number of sports injuries among Korean sports participants in their 20s and 30s. The data of 5118 lifestyle and professional athletes in their 20s and 30s were collected from a sports safety survey conducted by the Korea Sports Safety Foundation in 2019. The characteristics of the study population were analyzed using descriptive analysis. Determinants of injury severity and frequency based on participants' sex were identified using multivariate logistic regression analyses. The results show that among male sports participants, the type of athlete, knowledge of first aids, the physical condition, completing safety education, the skill level, and checking environmental factors were associated with injury severity. Among female sports participants, the type of athlete, the physical condition, performing finishing exercises, completing safety education, and the skill level were associated with injury severity. Additionally, among male sports participants, physical condition, completing safety education, skill level, participating in exercises according to one's fitness level, and having an awareness of accident prevention methods were associated with injury frequency. Lastly, among female sports participants, drinking water during scheduled breaks, carrying water to stay hydrated, physical condition, completing safety education, and skill level were associated with injury frequency. Furthermore, being a lifestyle athlete, being in good physical condition, and having beginner or intermediate skills in one's sport reduced injury severity among Korean sports participants in their 20s and 30s. Being in good physical condition, not completing safety education, and having beginner skills in one's sport reduced the injury frequency among Korean sports participants in their 20s and 30s. These findings suggest that lifestyle and professional athletes should be aware of these factors and participate in sports activities in a manner that reduces injury severity and frequency. Moreover, these factors should be considered when developing strategies to prevent sport injuries in lifestyle and professional athletes and allow them to participate in sports activities safely. Background: The Thai Rural ENT foundation has been conducting ear camps in Bhutan for many years to address the shortage of ENT specialists in the kingdom where patients are examined and treated for various ear illnesses. However, there has been no study conducted to assess the outcomes of such camps. This is the first study of its kind to be carried out in Bhutan. Objective: To study the spectrum of ear cases seen during the mobile ear camp, the intervention done and treatment outcomes. Materials and Methods: The study enrolled patients with ear disorders who presented to the mobile ear camp at Monggar Regional Referral Hospital, Bhutan, from January 6, 2020, to January 8, 2020. The following data were recorded: demographic details, preoperative clinical symptoms and otoscopic findings, preoperative audiogram, treatment or surgery done, postoperative middle ear and mastoid infection, wound infection, graft condition, any complications, and postoperative audiogram of operated cases. Patients who underwent surgery were followed up at 1 day, 6 weeks, and 2 months postoperatively. Results: Two hundred ten patients presented with otologic conditions and 43 underwent surgeries. Otitis media was the commonest disease detected, and tympanoplasty was the commonest surgery performed. The tympanic membrane closure rate was 92.1%, and the rate of hearing improvement was 63.2%. Mothering is a bond mothers share with their children, a feeling they experience subjectively. Yet motherhood is more often seen as a construct to be followed and by which to be judged. This societal expectation takes away what Andrea O'Reilly describes as the mother's 'agency' (2004). Motherhood has been bifurcated in meaning, as Adrienne Rich observes in Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution (1976), between '[...] the potential relationship of any woman to her powers of reproduction and children; and the institution, which aims at ensuring that that potential –and all women– shall remain under male control' (Rich 1976: 13). In addition, the way motherhood is experienced is shaped by the way the institution of motherhood and the experience of mothering form a women's sense of self. Yet on the other hand, mothering can be empowering for women. This article explores the maternal issues raised in the literary work, Em and the Big Hoom, a novel by Jerry Pinto. The article also examines the disparity between the institution and experience of mothering as it affects issues of identity, subjectivity, or agency. Imelda, a daughter and a mother, suffers at the hands of colonized motherhood, which she has been practising since she became a "mudd-dha," and her life had "turned inside out" (Pinto 2012: 133). The study will investigate how her mother colonized her agency as a mother and how she carried forward the motherhood inflicted by her mother, resulting in her loss of self. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Training programs for advanced practice providers (APP) often have significant variability in their curriculum, including electrocardiogram (ECG) education. Despite limitations in formal ECG training, APPs in the emergency department (ED) may be the first practitioner to interpret an ECG. Foundations of Emergency Medicine (FoEM) offers free, open-access curricula that are widely used for resident education. We sought to improve APP ECG interpretation skills by implementing the FoEM ECG I course. Methods: This was a single-site, pre- and post-intervention study of 23 APPs at our high-acuity, urban ED. In the fall of 2020, APP learners enrolled in a FoEM ECG I course led by faculty and senior resident instructors. The course consisted of six virtual, small-group, active-learning ECG workshops. Participants completed a 15-question multiple-choice test before, immediately after, and six months post-intervention to quantify knowledge acquisition. Additionally, a pre-and post-intervention knowledge, attitudes, and practices survey was administered on ECG interpretation skills and to evaluate the course. We evaluated change in ECG knowledge scores using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Changes in self-assessed knowledge were evaluated using an ordinal logistic mixed-effects regression. Results: A total of 23 APPs enrolled in the course. Knowledge assessments showed APPs improved from the pre-test (median 9/15, interquartile range [IQR] 7-11) to the post-test (median 12/15, IQR 10-13; P = 0.001). Test scores did not significantly change from the post-test to the delayed post-test (median 12/15, IQR 12-13; P = 0.30). Respondents' subjective rating of their skill did not significantly change (P = 0.06). Respondents reported no change in their likelihood of approaching an attending when uncertain of the correct interpretation of an ECG (P = 0.16). Overall, 91% were satisfied with the course and 96% agreed that the course difficulty was appropriate. Conclusion: The FoEM ECG course provided a standardized curriculum that improved APP knowledge for interpreting ECGs. Despite this, the course did not alter APPs' willingness to approach physicians for guidance with interpretation of abnormal ECGs. Value co‐creation as a research topic has been a critical proposition of interest to a wide range of disciplines. In recent years, the field of cultural heritage has also developed a range of information practices to promote different forms of value co‐creation. While the body of literature has begun to accumulate, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of conceptual foundations and how value co‐creation is implemented in cultural heritage information practices. This paper conducted a hermeneutic literature review to understand and conceptualize the core aspects of value co‐creation in various cultural heritage information works. In particular, this paper provides a research mapping of the genres of co‐creation in cultural heritage information practices, the actors, and the roles played by the stakeholders. Further, this review provides an overview of the dominant value co‐creation models in the cultural heritage field. It distills the drivers of value co‐creation and the core value consequences that arise from a process perspective. Finally, this paper puts forward a thematic, theoretical, and methodological agenda for future work based on these findings. The review contributes to the literature by proposing an integrated conceptual framework that summarizes the core elements of value co‐creation in cultural heritage information practices. Clinical social work practice in organisational settings is complex and challenging. Effective practice is contingent on knowledge and skills that are particular for systems-based work involving multiple interprofessional mental health practitioners and clients interacting in a relational matrix. Yet, not all social work theories and constructs that were developed for application in individual, group, and family modalities are directly transferable to the practice environment of a treatment system. This paper offers a conceptual framework that synthesises contemporary psychodynamic theory with systems theory – referred to as a psychodynamic systems approach – to inform and advance knowledge of systems-based social work practice. This approach considers the interplay of dynamic processes among the four levels of the socially co-constructed system which constitute the system as a whole. It examines how five key clinical phenomena – transference, countertransference, splitting, projective identification and enactment – are actualised in systems. Definitions of these phenomena formulated from a dyadic perspective and a contemporary psychodynamic systems approach are offered, and their similarities and differences are discussed. A composite case example is provided to illustrate how several of these phenomena manifest in clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adults accessing community mental health services are required to have a care plan, developed in collaboration with the person accessing the service. The variation in care plan templates in use in England and Wales, and their impact on care planning, is unknown. This study evaluates the community mental health care plan templates in use across England and Wales. Data were obtained from a Freedom of Information request to 50 NHS Mental Health Trusts. An evaluation tool was designed and used to extract data. Data were rated red, amber, or green against clinical and design standards. Forty-seven care plan templates were obtained. The clinical aspect of the care plan template had 60% adherence to the national standards, and the design aspects had 87% adherence. A 'high/low' typology is proposed against the design/clinical standards. The study identifies priority areas for improvement in the care plan templates as space to record the actions that service users and carers will take to contribute to their care plan, space to record the name and contact details for their care coordinator or lead professional, plus others involved in the person's care.
