Purpose/Objective: Previous studies have demonstrated important associations between personal resources and pain interference. Using latent profile analysis, the present study (a) identified subgroups of individuals with chronic pain who have different personal resource profiles; (b) explored sociodemographic differences among subgroups; and (c) examined how these subgroups differ in pain interference. Research Method/Design: Study 1 is based on daily diary and survey data from 220 individuals with fibromyalgia (FM). Study 2 is based on 4 annual surveys of 483 individuals with long-term neurological/neuromuscular disease or injury, and chronic pain. Modifiable personal resource variables including sense of resilience, social support, pain acceptance, and sleep quality were included in latent profile analyses. Results: Three subgroups were identified in both studies: High, Moderate, and Low Personal Resource groups. In both studies, annual income level was significantly different among subgroups. Study 1 results showed a significant between-groups difference in pain interference across 21-days only between High and Moderate Personal Resource groups controlling for the level of pain intensity and depressive symptoms. In Study 2, however, all subgroups were significantly different with respect to their levels of pain interference at baseline over and above various covariates, with the Low Personal Resource group reporting the highest level of pain interference at baseline. These baseline differences remained stable over 4 years. Conclusions/Implications: The findings suggest a robust association between economic disparity and personal resource profiles among individuals with chronic pain. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate whether supine lateral radiographs (SLRs) could replace stress radiographs for diagnosing chronic posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries and identifying combined PCL injuries (defined as PCL injury with medial collateral ligament or posterolateral ligament complex injury).Methods: In this retrospective study, both SLRs at 30° and 90° of knee flexion (30/90 SLRs) and Telos stress radiographs of patients with chronic PCL injuries (n = 38) and only 30/90 SLRs of healthy controls (n = 84) were taken. Injured-to-normal differences on 30/90 SLRs and stress radiographs were assessed. Correlation analysis was performed to evaluate injured-to-normal differences on 30/90 SLRs and stress radiographs in patients with chronic PCL injury. Subgroup analysis was performed to compare injured-to-normal differences on 30/90 SLRs and stress radiographs between the isolated and combined PCL injury groups. Receiver operating characteristic curves based on 30/90 SLRs were calculated to determine the cut-off value for diagnosing chronic PCL injury and identifying combined PCL injury.Results: Injured-to-normal differences on both 30 SLRs (3.1 ± 3.6 vs 1.6 ± 1.2, P = 0.019) and 90 SLRs (7.5 ± 3.5 vs 1.2 ± 1.0, P < 0.001) were significantly greater in patients with chronic PCL injuries than in healthy controls. Further, 90 SLRs had a highly accurate diagnostic value for chronic PCL injuries (area under the curve 0.958). The cut-off value for diagnosing chronic PCL injuries based on 90 SLRs was 3.0 mm (sensitivity, 94.7%; specificity, 92.9%). Injured-to-normal differences on 30/90 SLRs were significantly correlated with those on stress radiographs. The correlation coefficients were 0.397 (P = 0.014) for 30 SLRs and 0.605 (P < 0.001) for 90 SLRs. The cut-off value for diagnosing combined PCL injuries based on 90 SLRs was 9.6 mm (area under the curve 0.72).Conclusions: The diagnostic accuracy of 90 SLRs for chronic PCL injuries was similar to that of stress radiographs. Therefore, the 90 SLRs are reliable alternative method to assess the posterior knee laxity when the stress radiographs are not available.Level Of Evidence: Level IV, case series. Rationale: Linear mode of matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOFMS) has been routinely used for bacterial identification in the clinic, depending on the pattern analysis of spectral libraries rather than accurate mass measurement of ribosomal proteins (10–15 kDa). However, a demand for more accurate mass analysis of pathogens (e.g. KPC‐2 carbapenemase) has been recently increasing for diagnostic purposes. Methods: We introduced a 6xHIS‐tagged KPC‐2 (i.e. hKPC‐2) and used it as an internal mass calibrator for the mass calibration of target proteins. After internal mass calibration (In‐Cal), we evaluated the observed mass of KPC‐2 against the theoretical mass of hKPC‐2, which has 823 Da mass difference from the target protein. We further assessed the accuracy and precision of our calibration method regarding the identification of KPC‐2 and other pathogens in clinical isolates (n = 42). Results: Among several candidates for internal mass calibrators, the In‐Cal using a 6xHIS‐tagged protein on the target showed the highest mass accuracy and precision in the detection of target proteins (e.g. KPC‐2). The application of hKPC‐2 as an internal calibrator showed substantial improvement of mass accuracy, mass precision and also quantification of KPC in linearity and repeatability for KPC detection in the clinical isolates. Conclusions: Our In‐Cal method using 6xHIS‐tagged protein in MALDI‐TOFMS allows successful mass calibration (<3.5 Da) of pathogenic proteins (>20 kDa) and provides high mass accuracy as much as that of medium‐ and high‐resolution mass spectrometry. Chaotic reverberation in a cavity, when coupled with time reversal acoustics, can be harnessed to build a perfect time-reversal mirror for transmitting and receiving highly focused sounds with a small number of transducers. In this article, a virtual receiving array, comprised of a single receiving transducer and a chaotic cavity, is developed based on time reversal processing of the reverberation inside the cavity. A prototype array, having 10 × 10 virtual receiving elements, is built and evaluated against a comparable physical array in terms of its localization and waveform reproduction capabilities. It turns out that the most crucial factor in the success of a virtual array is the ergodicity of its chaotic cavity, the exact mathematical expression for which is also derived. The virtual receiving array presented here may find some niche applications in reverberant environments, where a physical array turns out to be too costly or cumbersome to operate. The ortho‐selective alkynylation of polyhalo‐substituted (hetero)aryl tosylates was investigated using an integrated continuous‐flow/batch protocol. Without the elimination of the tosyloxy group, the regioselective ortho‐metalation of the (hetero)aryl tosylates employing n‐BuLi and ZnCl2 was successfully achieved in continuous‐flow chemistry within 10.92 s (residence time). The Pd‐catalyzed Negishi alkynylations of various iodoethynyl (hetero)arenes and the resulting arylzinc species proceeded at room temperature in yields ranging from 51% to 95%. Aim: To explore the risk of breakthrough infection among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and risk of severe clinical outcomes after SARS‐CoV‐2 infection according to vaccination status. Materials and Methods: We conducted a population‐based cohort study using South Korea's linked database of nationwide COVID‐19 registry and claims data between 2018 and 2021. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for breakthrough infections were measured in 1:1 propensity‐score (PS)‐matched fully vaccinated patients with versus without T2D (full–vaccination cohort), and HRs for all‐cause mortality, intensive care unit (ICU) admission/mechanical ventilation (MV) use, and hospitalizations after SARS‐CoV‐2 infection were measured in 1:1 PS‐matched T2D patients with versus without full–vaccination (T2D cohort). Results: After 1:1 PS matching, 2 109 970 patients with and without T2D were identified (age 63.5 years; 50.9% male). Patients with T2D showed an increased risk of breakthrough infections compared to those without T2D (HR 1.10, 95% CI 1.06‐1.14). The increased risk of breakthrough infections was more notable among T2D patients receiving insulin treatment. However, the risk of severe COVID‐19 outcomes was lower in fully vaccinated T2D patients compared with unvaccinated T2D patients (all‐cause mortality: HR 0.54, 95% CI 0.43‐0.67; ICU admission/MV use: HR 0.31, 95% CI 0.23‐0.41; hospitalization: HR 0.73, 95% CI 0.68‐0.78). Conclusions: While patients with T2D remain a vulnerable population to SARS‐CoV‐2 infection even after full‐vaccination, full‐vaccination was associated with a lower risk of adverse clinical outcomes after SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. The advancement of non‐fullerene acceptors with crescent‐shaped geometry has led to the need for polymer donor improvements. Additionally, there is potential to enhance the photovoltaic parameters in high‐efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs). The random copolymerization method is a straightforward and effective strategy to further optimize photoactive morphology and enhance device performance. However, finding a suitable third component in terpolymers remains a crucial challenge. In this study, a series of terpolymer donors (PTF3, PTF5, PTF10, PTF20, and PTF50) is synthesized by introducing varying amounts of the trifluoromethyl‐substituted unit (CF3) into the PM6 polymer backbone. Even subtle changes in the CF3 content can significantly enhance all the photovoltaic parameters due to the optimized energy levels, molecular aggregation/miscibility, and bulk‐heterojunction morphology of the photoactive materials. Thus, the best binary OSC based on the PTF5:Y6‐BO achieves an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.2% in the unit cell and a PCE of 11.6% in the sub‐module device (aperture size: 54.45 cm2), when using halogen‐free solvent o‐xylene. Emergence of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N8 virus in Asia and its spread to Europe and North America has caused great concern for human health. Although the H5N8 virus has been only moderately pathogenic to mammalian hosts, virulence can still increase. We evaluated the pathogenic potential of several H5N8 strains via the mouse-adaptation method. Two H5N8 viruses were sequentially passaged in BALB/c mice and plaque-purified from lung samples. The viruses rapidly obtained high virulence (MLD50, up to 0.5 log10 PFU/mL) within 5 passages. Sequence analysis revealed the acquisition of several virulence markers, including the novel marker P708S in PB1 gene. Combinations of markers synergistically enhanced viral replication and polymerase activity in human cell lines and virulence and multiorgan dissemination in mice. These results suggest that H5N8 viruses can rapidly acquire virulence markers in mammalian hosts; thus, rapid spread as well as repeated viral introduction into the hosts may significantly increase the risk of human infection and elevate pandemic potential. This Letter reports measurements of nonlinearity parameter B/A of water-saturated glass beads under uniaxial compression representative of the gravitational loading in seabed. The finite-amplitude method in conjunction with the multi-Gaussian beam model is used to determine B/A, in which the use of an accurate source function is found to be important in achieving the overall measurement accuracy. The estimated B/A is on the order of a hundred and decreases with increasing uniaxial compression up to 50 kPa, so that B/A could change as much as 20% over a depth of 5 m for a typical coarse sandy sediment. Neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) are widely used antiviral drugs for the treatment of humans with influenza virus infections. There have been widespread reports of NAI resistance among seasonal A(H1N1) viruses, and most have been identified in oseltamivir-exposed patients or those treated with other NAIs. Thus, monitoring and identifying NA markers conferring resistance to NAIs--particularly newly introduced treatments--is critical to manage viral infections. Therefore, we screened and identified substitutions conferring resistance to laninamivir by enriching random mutations in the NA gene of the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1)pdm09] followed by deep sequencing of the laninamivir-selected variants. After the generation of single mutants possessing each identified mutation, two A(H1N1)pdm09 recombinants possessing novel NA gene substitutions (ie, D199E and P458T) were shown to confer resistance to more than one NAI. Of note, mutants possessing P458T--which is located outside of the catalytic or framework residue of the NA active site--exhibited highly reduced inhibition by all four approved NAIs. Using MDCK cells, we observed that the in vitro viral replication of the two recombinants was lower compared with WT. Additionally, in infected mice, decreased mortality and/or mean lung viral titers were observed in mutants compared with WT. Reverse mutations to WT were observed in the lung homogenate samples from D199E-infected mice after 3 serial passages. Overall, the novel NA substitutions identified which could possibly emerge in influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 during laninamivir therapy and have altered NAI susceptibility, but the compromised in vitro/in vivo viral fitness may limit viral spreading. Objective: Parental cannabis use disorder (CUD) is a known risk factor in the development of adolescent cannabis use. One potential mechanism is parenting behaviors. This study considered cannabis-specific parenting strategies as a mechanism of the relation between parental CUD and adolescent cannabis use.Method: Pathways were examined using multilevel longitudinal mediation models (N = 363, mean age = 16.3 years) comparing adolescent offspring of parents who never used cannabis, parents who used cannabis without CUD, and parents with CUD.Results: Parental cannabis use history did not significantly predict parental sharing of negative experiences with cannabis or parental strategies to prevent cannabis use. Cannabis-specific strategies did not successfully deter adolescent use. Parental sharing of negative experiences with cannabis use in fact predicted increased adolescent cannabis use.Conclusions: Cannabis-specific parenting did not reduce adolescent cannabis use, and sharing negative experiences was detrimental. The Stille coupling reaction is a widely used carbon-carbon bond-forming synthetic method. Many important advances have been reported in chemical literature, further expanding its scope and versatility, with the development of efficient Palladium (Pd)catalysts and ligands. Despite the extensive usage, however, there is no standard protocol for a given coupling reaction in terms of selecting an appropriate set of reaction conditions as the reported procedures employ a wide variety of solvents, catalysts and additives for the reactions. This article mentions that 3,5-dibromo-2-pyrone undergoes Stille coupling reactions regioselectively at either C3 or C5, depending on the reaction conditions. The preferred formation of a Pd intermediate and its higher reactivity would account for the regioselective substitutions at C5 when Stille couplings are conducted.

Background Immune responses to each vaccine must be investigated to establish effective vaccination strategies for the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. We investigated the long-term kinetics of immune responses after heterologous booster vaccination in relation to Omicron breakthrough infection (BI). Methods Our study included 373 healthcare workers who received primary ChAdOx1 vaccine doses and a third BNT162b2 vaccine dose. BIs that occurred after the third vaccine were investigated. Blood specimens were collected before and 3 months after the booster dose from participants without BI and 1, 4, and 6 months after BI from participants who experienced BI. Spike-specific binding and neutralizing antibody levels against the wild-type virus, Omicron BA.1, and Omicron BA.5, as well as cellular responses, were analyzed. Results A total of 346 participants (82 in the no BI group; 192 in the BI group during the BA.1/BA.2 period; 72 in the BI group during the BA.5 period) were included in the analysis. Participants without BI exhibited the highest binding and neutralizing antibody concentrations and greatest cellular response 1 month after the third vaccination, which reached a nadir by the ninth month. Antibody and cellular responses in participants who experienced BI substantially increased postinfection. Neutralizing antibody titers in individuals who experienced BI during the BA.1/BA.2 period showed more robust increase against wild-type virus than against BA.1 and BA.5. Conclusions Our findings provide evidence of antigenic imprinting in participants who received a heterologous booster vaccination, thereby serving as a foundation for further studies on the impact of BIs on immune responses. Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the most common nosocomial infections suffered by surgical patients. They increase medical costs and prolong hospital stay. With respect to gastrointestinal surgery, SSIs are reported to have an incidence of up to 30%, and they frequently cause morbidity. The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate whether use of triclosan-coated sutures for abdominal incision closure during colorectal surgery reduces the incidence of SSI. Patients and Methods: This was a double-blinded randomized controlled trial in a single academic surgical hospital. Patients who underwent laparoscopic or open colorectal surgery were included. Patients were pre-operatively randomly assigned to either the Vicryl® Plus (VP) or Vicryl® (Ethicon Inc., Somerville, NJ) group. The patients and medical staff were blinded. Results: The primary end point was overall SSI rate and SSI at 30 days. Over a six-year period, 811 patients who underwent colorectal surgery and provided informed consent were randomly assigned (VP group, 396 patients; Vicryl group, 415 patients). No differences in baseline demographics were observed between the groups. The overall incidence of SSI was 4.8% (39/811 patients). There were no statistically significant differences in mean length of post-operative hospital stay between the groups (VP group, 9.3 days; Vicryl group, 9.6 days; p = 0.587). Statistically significant differences in SSI rate after post-operative day 30 were observed between the groups (VP group, 1 patient [7.1%]; Vicryl group, 7 patients [28.0%]; p = 0.039). Conclusions: Although use of triclosan-coated sutures did not reduce incidence of SSI within 30 days post-operatively, it is associated with reduced SSI rate after post-operative day 30. The etching of glasses in aqueous hydrofluoric acid ( HF) solutions is applied in many technological fields. Particularly, the textured transparent conductive oxide materials on the glass substrate etched by HF were used to improve the current density of solar cells. In this study, the textured glass substrate has been etched by solution and the Al-doped ZnO ( AZO) thin films have been prepared on this textured glass substrates by RF magnetron sputtering method. After the AZO film deposition, the surface of AZO has been etched by hydrochloric acid with different concentration and etching time. Etched AZO thin films had higher haze ratio and sheet resistance than bare AZO glass. Increases in the root-mean-square surface roughness of AZO films enhanced from 53.78 to 84.46 nm the haze ratio in above 700 nm wavelength. Our process could be applicable in texturing glass and etching AZO surface to fabricate solar cell in industrial scale. We also carried out fabricating an organic solar-cell device. Energy conversion efficiency improvement of 123% was obtained with textured AZO-based solar-cell device compared with that of nontextured solar-cell device. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pneumonia is a leading infectious cause of morbidity and mortality among adults. Pneumococcal pneumonia (PP) is the most common vaccine-preventable bacterial etiology of pneumonia. In this study, we estimated the incidence of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and pneumococcal diseases among Korean adults. Methods: Clinical and microbiological databases from three hospitals were retrospectively reviewed to determine the incidence and case fatality rates of CAP and pneumococcal diseases in Korean adults aged ≥19 years from 2011 to 2014. Incidence and case fatality rates of CAP, PP and invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) were evaluated based on the catchment population. Catchment population was calculated using national health insurance data, estimating the proportion of patients with pneumonia that were medically attended at each hospital. Results: Among 5,783 patients with medically attended CAP, 833 (14.4%) had PP. For IPD, a total of 91 culture-confirmed cases were identified. The overall incidence of CAP was 307.7 cases per 100,000 persons per year with an in-hospital mortality rate of 6.2%. The estimated annual incidence of pneumococcal pneumonia was 42.2–49.4 cases per 100,000 persons per year, increasing with age to >280 per 100,000 persons per year in older patients over 70 years. The annual incidence of IPD had a range of 4.1–6.5 cases per 100,000 persons per year. The overall case fatality rate for invasive pneumococcal diseases was 30.8% with the highest rate of 66.7% in patients over 80 years. Conclusion: Over the study period, incidences of CAP, PP and IPD were consistently high, particularly in older people. Neurons extend processes that vary in number, length, and direction of “outgrowth”. Extracellular cues help determine outgrowth patterns. In Caenorhabditis elegans, neurons respond to the extracellular UNC-6 (netrin) cue via UNC-40 (DCC) and UNC-5 (UNC5) receptors. Previously, we presented evidence that UNC-40 asymmetric localization at the plasma membrane is self-organizing, and that UNC-40 can localize and mediate outgrowth at randomly selected sites. Here, we provide further evidence for a statistically-oriented asymmetric localization (SOAL) model in which UNC-5 receptor activity affects patterns of axon outgrowth by regulating UNC-40 asymmetric localization. According to the SOAL model, the direction of outgrowth activity fluctuates across the membrane over time. Random walk modeling predicts that increasing the degree to which the direction of outgrowth fluctuates will decrease the outward displacement of the membrane. By differentially affecting the degree to which the direction of outgrowth activity fluctuates over time, extracellular cues can produce different rates of outgrowth along the surface and create patterns of “extension”. Consistent with the SOAL model, we show that unc-5 mutations alter UNC-40 asymmetric localization, increase the degree to which the direction of outgrowth fluctuates, and reduce the extent of outgrowth in multiple directions relative to the source of UNC-6. These results are inconsistent with current models, which predict that UNC-5 mediates a “repulsive” response to UNC-6. Genetic interactions suggest that UNC-5 acts through the UNC-53 (NAV2) cytoplasmic protein to regulate UNC-40 asymmetric localization in response to both the UNC-6 and EGL-20 (Wnt) extracellular cues. In this study, we aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), an active component of propolis purified from honeybee hives, on photothrombotic cortical ischemic injury in mice. Permanent focal ischemia was achieved in the medial frontal and somatosensory cortices of anesthetized male C57BL/6 mice by irradiation of the skull with cold light laser in combination with systemic administration of rose bengal. The animals were treated with CAPE (0.5-5 mg/kg, i.p.) twice 1 and 6 h after ischemic insult. CAPE significantly reduced the infarct size as well as the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α, hypoxiainducible factor-1α, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, interleukin-1α, and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase in the cerebral cortex ipsilateral to the photothrombosis. Moreover, it induced an increase in heme oxygenase-1 immunoreactivity and interleukin-10 expression. These results suggest that CAPE exerts a remarkable neuroprotective effect on ischemic brain injury via its anti-inflammatory properties, thereby providing a benefit to the therapy of cerebral infarction. In the present study, we enhanced the phenolic content of 70% ethanol extracts of Spirogyra sp. (SPE, 260.47 ± 5.21 gallic acid equivalent [GAE] mg g-1), 2.97 times to 774.24 ± 2.61 GAE mg g-1 in the ethyl acetate fraction of SPE (SPEE). SPEE was evaluated for its antiradical activity in online high-performance liquid chromatography-ABTS analysis, and the peaks with the highest antiradical activities were identified as gallic acid derivatives containing gallic acid, methyl gallate, and ethyl gallate. Isolation of ethyl gallate from Spirogyra sp. was performed for the first time in this study. In ultraviolet B (UVB)-irradiated keratinocytes (HaCaT cells), SPEE improved cell viability by 8.22%, and 23.33% and reduced accumulation of cells in the sub-G1 phase by 20.53%, and 32.11% at the concentrations of 50 and 100 μg mL-1, respectively. Furthermore, SPEE (50 and 100 μg mL-1) reduced reactive oxygen species generation in UVB-irradiated zebrafish by 66.67% and 77.78%. This study suggests a protective activity of gallic acid and its derivatives from Spirogyra sp. against UVB-induced stress responses in both in vitro and in vivo models, suggesting a potential use of SPEE in photoprotection. To evaluate the frequency and appropriateness of indwelling urinary catheters (IUC) use and the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CA-UTI), and explore the risk factors for CA-UTI in hospitals as a whole, we conducted a study. This study was divided into two parts; a point-prevalence study on Dec 12th 2012 and a prospective cohort study from Dec 13th 2012 to Jan 9th 2013 were performed in six hospitals in Korea. All hospitalized patients with newly-placed IUCs were enrolled and monitored weekly for 28 days after IUC placement. In the point-prevalence study, the IUCs were present in median 14.9/100 hospitalized patients (1Q 14, 3Q 16) across the six hospitals. In the prospective cohort study, the median IUC-days per patient was 5 (1Q 3, 3Q 10) and the median CA-UTI prevalence per 1,000 catheter days was 1.9 (1Q 0.7, 3Q 3.8) with significant inter-hospital variation. The proportion of patients with inappropriate IUC maintenance increased with number of IUC-days (8.5% on day 7, 9.4% on day 14, 16.3% on day 21, and 23.1% on day 28). Urinary output monitoring (23/36, 63.9%) was the most common indication for inappropriate use after 1 week of ICU placement. In multivariate analysis, IUC-days was significantly associated with the development of CA-UTI (odds ratio 1.122, 95% confidence interval 1.074–1.173, P< 0.001). Background: Scrub typhus is a mite-borne infectious rickettsial disease that can occur in rural and urban areas, with an especially high prevalence in older populations. This disease causes systemic vasculitis that can invade the central nervous system. Considering these characteristics, here we examined whether scrub typhus was associated with the occurrence of dementia, using large population-based cohort data. Method: This population-based cohort study enrolled patients aged 60–89 years using data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment database of South Korea between 2009 and 2018. We defined scrub typhus and dementia using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Edition diagnostic codes. The control group was stratified according to age and sex at a ratio of 1:5 to the case group in the study population. The index date was set after 90 days beyond the date of the scrub typhus diagnosis, while the observation period was from the time of the index appointment to December 31, 2020. The primary outcome was newly diagnosed dementia. The secondary outcome was dementia classification, such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and other. All analyses were conducted by matching age, gender, and comorbidity. Results: During the observation period, 10,460 of 71,047 (14.7%) people who had a history of scrub typhus versus 42,965 of 355,235 (12.1%) people in the control group, that is, with no history of scrub typhus, were diagnosed with dementia (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.12; 95% confidence interval, 1.10–1.15, p < 0.001). The Kaplan–Meier curves for time to cumulative incidence of dementia showed that the dementia incidence in both groups increased over time, while individuals with a past history of scrub typhus had a higher incidence of dementia than the control group. Second, the risk of Alzheimer's disease was significantly higher among patients with a history of scrub typhus (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.15; 95% confidence interval 1.13–1.18, p < 0.001). Conclusion: In conclusion, a history of scrub typhus infection in old age is significantly associated with an increase in dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease. The success of active noise control (ANC) is largely deTermined by the fidelity of the estimated secondary path, which encapsulates the "room acoustics" between the secondary sound source and the error sensor. In a time-invariant system the secondary path is usually measured and hard-coded in the controller prior to the ANC operation. When ANC is to be performed in a time-varying environment, however, the estimated secondary path should be updated accordingly, a task that poses many challenges in Terms of efficacy, cost, and user comfort. In this paper we present a deep learning-assisted secondary path update technique, in which deep neural networks are trained to estimate the secondary path in real time according to changing boundary conditions. The feasibility of the technique is tested in an airborne duct, where the error sensor is allowed to move along the duct to simulate changes in boundary conditions. Results have shown that even in the face of a dramatic change in boundary conditions, the ANC system equipped with the present update scheme is capable of reducing broadband noise by up to 10 dB. Recently, non-diphtheriae Corynebacterium spp. have been increasingly reported in patients. In addition, several novel species of Corynebacterium isolated from humans. Here, we report two cases of human infections caused by Corynebacterium haemomassiliense-like organisms, which had not been identified at the species level by MALDI-TOF MS analysis. They were revealed to be closely related to C. haemomassiliense, a recently described species by three housekeeping genes (16S rRNA, rpoB, and gyrA) and phenotypic features. Both strains were multidrug-resistant but susceptible to vancomycin, meropenem, and linezolid. Our report suggests that human infections by the recently described Corynebacterium species may not be limited to a specific region, in addition to difficulty of classifying the genus Corynebacterium. The prevalence rate of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing worldwide, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a main cause of death in patients with CKD. The high incidence of CVD in CKD patients is related to chronic inflammation, dyslipidemia, malnutrition, atherosclerosis, and vascular calcification. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids ( ¿ -3 PUFAs) have been shown to reduce the risk of CVD. In this paper, we review the beneficial effects of ¿ -3 PUFAs on CVD and the possible cardioprotective mechanisms of ¿ -3 PUFAs in CKD patients by determining the effect of ¿ -3 PUFAs in the general population. ¿ -3 PUFAs have several cardioprotective benefits, such as reducing inflammation, decreasing oxidative stress, inhibiting platelet activity, exerting antiarrhythmic effects, and improving triglyceride levels, in the general population and patients with CKD. Modifications of erythrocyte membrane fatty acid content, including an increased ¿ -3 index and decreased oleic acid, after ¿ -3 PUFAs supplementation are important changes related to CVD risk reduction in the general population and patients with CKD. Further basic and clinical studies are essential to confirm the effects of ¿ -3 PUFAs on vitamin D activation, vascular calcification prevention, cardiovascular events, and mortality in CKD patients. Background: Although the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) showed good efficacy against pneumococcal disease in the the CAPiTA trial, the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination (PPSV23) program has been ongoing for older adults aged ≥ 65 years in Korea since May of 2013. This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the current vaccination strategy (a single-dose PPSV23 vaccination) compared to a single-dose PCV13 vaccination and sequential PCV13-PPSV23 vaccinations in the elderly population aged ≥ 65 years. Methods: Using a Markov model, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) of three vaccination strategies were assessed in a societal context. The transition probabilities, utility weights to estimate quality adjusted life year (QALY), and disease treatment costs were either calculated or cited from published data and the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. Simulations were performed in hypothetical cohorts of Korean adults aged ≥ 19 years. The vaccine effectiveness of PPSV23 was cited from a Cochrane Review report, while PCV13 effectiveness data were gathered from the CAPiTA trial. Results: Current PPSV23 vaccination strategies were cost-effective (ICER, $25,786 per QALY). However, the administration of PCV13 as a substitute for PPSV23 was shown to be more cost-effective than PPSV23 vaccination (ICER, $797 per QALY). Sequential PCV13-PPSV23 vaccination was also more cost-effective than PPSV23 for elderly people aged ≥ 65 years. In sensitivity analysis assuming significant PPSV23 effectiveness (50%) against non-bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia, the PCV13 vaccination strategy was superior to the PPSV23 vaccination strategy in terms of cost-effectiveness. Conclusion: The results suggest that PCV13 vaccination is more cost-effective in elderly subjects aged ≥ 65 years compared to the current PPSV23 vaccination strategy. When complete data is obtained in 2018 on the maximal herd effects of childhood PCV13 immunization, the incidence of pneumococcal pneumonia and the cost-effectiveness of vaccination strategies need to be reassessed. A highly active and stable catalyst/support system is developed by using a two-step process. In the first step, activated carbon composite support (ACCS) is synthesized that retains its activity after accelerated stress test (AST). A 30% Pt/ACCS catalyst shows no loss of mass activity and power density after 5000 cycles at 1.0–1.5 V while the commercial Pt/C and Pt/290G catalysts show drastic mass activity losses (57.5% and 66.2%, respectively) and power density losses (88.7% and 84.0%, respectively). In the second step, Pt catalyst with a compressive Pt lattice (Pt ∗ ) is synthesized through a USC-developed annealing procedure in which Co atoms previously embedded in the support diffuse into Pt. The 30% Pt ∗ /ACCS shows high initial power density (rated) of 0.174 g Pt kW −1 and high stability of 24 mV loss at 0.8 A cm −2 with an electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) loss of 42% after 30,000 cycles (0.6–1.0 V). The support stability under 1.0–1.5 V potential cycling shows potential loss of 8 mV at 1.5 A cm −2 and ECSA loss of 22% after 5000 cycles. Improved stability and activity of Pt*/ACCS catalyst are due to synergistic effect of catalytic activity and stability of ACCS and formation of compressive Pt lattice catalyst. Purpose: Previous studies have demonstrated the immunogenicity and safety of the co-administration of the trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV3) with the polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (PPV) or pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). However, there is no direct comparison study that evaluates the immunogenicity and safety of IIV3 given concomitantly with PCV13 or PPV23 in the elderly. Materials and Methods: During the 2012-2013 influenza vaccination period, 224 healthy elderly volunteers aged 65 years and older randomly received IIV3 given concomitantly with either PCV13 (PCV13+IIV3) or PPV23 (PPV23+IIV3) in a 1:1 ratio. Serum hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies for IIV3 were measured at the time of vaccination and 1 month after vaccination. Adverse events were recorded prospectively in a clinical diary during a 7-day period. Results: A total of 220 participants blood samples for analysis of immunogenicity and kept a clinical diary for safety analysis (PCV13+IIV3, n=110; PPV23+IIV3, n=110). One month after vaccination, both groups satisfied the Committee for Medical Products for Human Use criteria for A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B strains, showing comparable seroprotection rates, seroconversion rates and geometric mean titer fold. The assessments of immunogenicity were similar in both groups. The most common local and systemic reactions were pain at the injection site and generalized myalgia. They were generally mild or moderate in intensity. The adverse events were not statistically different between the two groups. We reported on the ablation depth control with a resolution of 40 nm on indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film using a square beam shaped femtosecond (190 fs) laser ( λ p =1030 nm). A slit is used to make the square, flat top beam shaped from the Gaussian spatial profile of the femtosecond laser. An ablation depth of 40 nm was obtained using the single pulse irradiation at a peak intensity of 2.8 TW/cm 2 . The morphologies of the ablated area were characterized using an optical microscope, atomic force microscope (AFM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Ablations with square and rectangular types with various sizes were demonstrated on ITO thin film using slits with varying x – y axes. The stereo structure of the ablation with the depth resolution of approximately 40 nm was also fabricated successfully using the irradiation of single pulses with different shaped sizes of femtosecond laser. A neuroprotective role of autophagy mediates the degradation of β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The previous study showed cilostazol modulates autophagy by increasing beclin1, Atg5 and LC3-II expressions, and depletes intracellular Aβ accumulation. This study elucidated the mechanisms through which cilostazol modulates the autophagic degradation of Aβ in neurons. In N2a cells, cilostazol (10–30 μM), significantly increased the expression of P-AMPKα (Thr 172) and downstream P-ACC (acetyl-CoA carboxylase) (Ser 79) as did resveratrol (SIRT1 activator), or AICAR (AMPK activator), which were blocked by KT5720, compound C (AMPK inhibitor), or sirtinol. Furthermore, phosphorylated-mTOR (Ser 2448) and phosphorylated-P70S6K (Thr 389) expressions were suppressed, and LC3-II levels were elevated in association with decreased P62/Sqstm1 by cilostazol. Cilostazol increased cathepsin B activity and decreased p62/SQSTM 1, consequently decreased accumulation of Aβ1–42 in the activated N2aSwe cells, and these results were blocked by sirtinol, compound C and bafilomycin A1 (autophagosome blocker), suggesting enhanced autophagosome formation by cilostazol. In SIRT1 gene-silenced N2a cells, cilostazol failed to increase the expressions of P-LKB1 (Ser 428) and P-AMPKα, which contrasted with its effect in negative control cells transfected with scrambled siRNA duplex. Further, N2a cells transfected with expression vectors encoding pcDNA SIRT1 showed increased P-AMPKα expression, which mimicked the effect of cilostazol in N2a cells; suggesting cilostazol-stimulated expressions of P-LKB1 and P-AMPKα were SIRT1-dependent. Unlike their effects in N2a cells, in HeLa cells, which lack LKB1, cilostazol and resveratrol did not elevate SIRT1 or P-AMPKα expression, indicating cilostazol and resveratrol-stimulated expressions of SIRT1 and P-AMPKα are LKB1-dependent. Bruising is one of the major defects of strawberries. Strawberry bruised areas are often visible as flattened, sunken, and discolored. Postharvest strawberries can be bruised by compression, impact, or vibration forces during harvesting, transportation, and packinghouse operations. These bruises make strawberries more vulnerable to rot or disease, thus shortening their shelf life. Bruises can also cause consumers to abandon purchase decisions. Therefore, inspecting strawberry bruises is an important procedure for commercial strawberry farms to guarantee the high quality of strawberries sent to the market. A novel technique was developed in this study to detect bruises on strawberry images captured by a color camera under incandescent and ultraviolet (UV) light. Mask Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask R-CNN), a deep learning method, was utilized for the strawberry bruise detection. Four bruise severities were classified according to the estimated bruise ratio of every single strawberry (Minor Bruise, Light Bruise, Moderate Bruise, and Severe Bruise). The results showed that Mask R-CNN could accurately detect whether a strawberry is bruised or not under both lighting conditions. However, the strawberry bruise severity classification accuracy of the proposed machine vision technique was improved significantly under UV light compared to incandescent light. For whole strawberry bruise detection under UV light, the F1 score for detecting strawberry bruises was 0.99, and the highest F1 score for whole strawberry bruise severity classification was 0.92 for Minor Bruise. This strawberry bruise detection system can assist farmers in detecting bruised strawberries on the processing line or an automated strawberry harvester, improve the quality of strawberries that are sent to the market, and avoid shortening the shelf life of fresh strawberries. The regioselective ortho arylation of polyhalo‐substituted (hetero)aryl tosylates has been investigated employing an integrated continuous flow/batch protocol. The regioselective ortho metalation of (hetero)aryl tosylates using n‐BuLi and ZnCl2 was effectively achieved using continuous flow chemistry in a short residence time of 10.92 s, without removal of the tosyloxy group. The Pd‐catalyzed Negishi coupling reactions of various (hetero)aryl iodides with the resulting arylzinc species proceeded readily at room temperature in 31% to 98% yields. Antiangiogenic therapy is a recognized method for countering the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) and improving anti-tumor immunity. PB101 is a glycosylated decoy receptor that binds to VEGF-A and PlGF with high affinity, based on the VEGFR1 backbone. Here, we elucidated PB101-induced remodeling of tumor angiogenesis and immunity, which enhances anti-PD-L1 immune checkpoint blockade. PB101 inhibited tumor growth by suppressing angiogenesis and enhancing CD8+ T cell infiltration into the tumors. PB101 induced robust reprogramming of antitumor immunity and activates intratumoral CD8+ T cells. Anti-tumor efficacy of PB101 is mostly dependent on CD8+ T cells and IFN-γ. PB101 reprograms tumor immunity in a manner distinct from that of the conventional VEGF decoy receptor, VEGF-trap. With its potent immune-modulating capability, PB101 synergizes with an anti-PD-L1, triggering strengthened antitumor immunity. Combining PB101 and anti-PD-L1 could establish durable protective immunity against tumor recurrence and metastasis. The findings of this study offer scientific rationales for further clinical development of PB101, particularly when used in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors, as a potential treatment for advanced cancers. There were few data regarding the association of volume status with sarcopenia using muscle mass, strength, and physical performance in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (ND-CKD) patients. We aimed to evaluate the association between volume status and sarcopenia in ND-CKD patients. Our retrospective study analyzed data from a previous study which included ND-CKD patients who had stable renal function. Our study used its baseline data alone. The edema index and muscle mass were measured using a multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis machine. The edema index was calculated using extracellular water/total body water ratio. The skeletal muscle index (SMI, kg/m2) was calculated using appendicular muscle mass per height squared. Handgrip strength (HGS, kg) was measured during the standing position in all patients. Dynamic gait speed (GS, m/s) was evaluated using 6-m walking speed. Patients with both low muscle mass (SMI < 7.0 kg/m2 for men and < 5.7 kg/m2 for women using bioimpedance analysis) and low HGS (< 28 kg for men and < 18 kg for women) or low GS (< 1.0 m/s) were classified as having sarcopenia. The patients (n = 147) were divided into tertiles based on the edema index level. The mean edema index in the low, middle, and high tertiles was 0.377 ± 0.006, 0.390 ± 0.003, and 0.402 ± 0.006, respectively. The edema index was significantly correlated with SMI, HGS, and GS (r = − 0.343 for SMI, − 0.492 for HGS, and − 0.331 for GS; P < 0.001 for three indicators). The SMI, HGS, and GS values were 8.1 ± 1.0 kg/m2, 33.0 ± 9.4 kg, and 1.2 ± 0.2 m/s in the low tertile,7.8 ± 1.2 kg/m2, 30.0 ± 7.5 kg, and 1.0 ± 0.3 m/s in the middle tertile, and 7.2 ± 1.4 kg/m2, 23.7 ± 7.4 kg, and 1.0 ± 0.3 m/s in the high tertile, respectively. Univariate analyses revealed that SMI was lower in patients in the high tertile than in those in the low tertile. HGS was lowest in high tertile, and GS was greatest in the low tertile. The high tertile for predicting sarcopenia had an odds ratio of 6.03 (95% CI, 1.78–20.37; P = 0.004) compared to low or middle tertiles. The results of multivariate analyses were similar to those of the univariate analyses. The subgroup analyses showed that statistical significance was greater in < 65 years and men than ≥ 65 years and women. The present study showed that the edema index is inversely associated with sarcopenia, muscle mass index, strength, and physical performance in ND-CKD patients. However, considering the limitations of our study such as its small sample size, this association was not strong. Osteopenia, sarcopenia, and vascular calcification (VC) are prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease and often coexist. In the absence of proven therapies, it is necessary to develop therapeutic or preventive nutrients supplementation for osteopenia, sarcopenia, and VC. The present study investigated the effect of omega-3 fatty acid (FA) and menaquinone-7 (MK-7) on osteopenia, sarcopenia, and VC in adenine and low-protein diet-induced uremic rats. Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diets containing 0.75% adenine and 2.5% protein for three weeks. Rats were randomly divided into four groups that were fed diets containing 2.5% protein for four weeks: adenine control (0.9% saline), omega-3 FA (300 mg/kg/day), MK-7 (50 µg/kg/day), and omega-3 FA/MK-7. Von Kossa staining for aortic calcification assessment was performed. Osteoclast surface/bone surface ratio (OcS/BS) of bone and muscle fiber were analyzed using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) immunohistochemical staining was done in the aorta and bone. Molecules related with sarcopenia were analyzed using western blotting. Compared to the normal control, OcS/BS and aortic calcification, and OPG staining in the aorta and bone were significantly increased in the adenine controls. OPG staining and aortic calcification progressed the least in the group supplemented with both omega-3 FA/MK-7. In the adenine controls, the regular arrangement of muscle fiber was severely disrupted, and inflammatory cell infiltration was more prominent. These findings were reduced after combined supplementation with omega-3 FA/MK-7. Furthermore, decreased mammalian target of rapamycin and increased Forkhead box protein 1 expression was significantly restored by combined supplementation. Combined nutrients supplementation with omega-3 FA and MK-7 may be helpful for aortic VC prevention, reducing osteoclast activation and improving sarcopenia-related molecules in adenine and low-protein diet induced uremic rats. Abstract: A simple wiper coating method was introduced to coat large area of PEDOT:PSS film for the polymer solar cell module. A thin and smooth film of PEDOT:PSS was prepared by the method. The efficiency of 4.46% was obtained from the single cell having wiper-coated PEDOT:PSS layer. The efficiency is comparable to the polymer single cell prepared by spin coating method. The atomic force microscopy result confirms that the surface of the film prepared by the coating method is smooth uniform. The large area module was prepared by the method and the VOC of 5.30 V, ISC of 19.88 mA and FF of 53.29% was obtained from the polymer solar cell module. Prophylactic pancreatic stenting effectively reduces the rate and severity of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) in the precut technique; however, studies on the optimal type and duration of the stent are still lacking. This prospective study evaluated the incidence and severity of PEP and the rate of spontaneous stent dislodgement in patients undergoing transpancreatic precut sphincterotomy (TPS) accompanied by prophylactic pancreatic stenting with an unflanged plastic stent (4F × 5 cm) for difficult biliary cannulation. A total of 247 patients with naïve papilla were enrolled in this study, and data were collected prospectively. In the final analysis, 170 and 61 patients were included in the standard cannulation technique and TPS groups, respectively. The incidence of PEP in the standard cannulation technique and TPS groups was 3.5% and 1.6% (p = 0.679), respectively. The technical success rate of selective biliary cannulation in the TPS group was 91.8%. The spontaneous dislodgement rate of the prophylactic plastic stent was 98.4%. In conclusion, an unflanged pancreatic stent (4F × 5 cm) placement in TPS for patients with failed standard cannulation technique is a safe and effective measure due to low adverse events and few additional endoscopic procedures for removing the pancreatic duct (PD) stent. Serum myostatin and indoxyl sulfate (IS) levels increase with kidney function decline and may function as uremic toxins in chronic kidney disease (CKD)-related sarcopenia. Herein, we analyzed the association between serum myostatin and IS levels and sarcopenia in patients with CKD, by performing a post hoc analysis of baseline data extracted from the RECOVERY study (clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03788252) of 150 patients with CKD. We stratified patients into two groups according to the median value of myostatin (cutoff 4.5 ng/mL) and IS levels (cutoff 0.365 mg/dL). The proportion of patients with sarcopenia was higher in those with high IS levels but lower in those with high myostatin levels. The skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and handgrip strength (HGS) were significantly lower in patients with high IS levels but significantly higher in patients with high myostatin levels. IS levels showed a negative correlation with glomerular filtration rate (GFR), SMI, and HGS. However, myostatin levels were positively correlated with SMI and HGS, but not with GFR. Sarcopenia was independently associated with age and IS level after adjustment. Radiation-induced cutaneous ulcers are a challenging medical problem for patients receiving radiation therapy. The inhibition of cell senescence has been suggested as a prospective strategy to prevent radiation ulcers. However, there is no effective treatment for senescent cells in radiation ulcers. In this study, we investigated whether zileuton alleviated radiation-induced cutaneous ulcer by focusing on cell senescence. We demonstrate increased cell senescence and senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) in irradiated dermal fibroblasts and skin tissue. The SASP secreted from senescent cells induces senescence in adjacent cells. In addition, 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) expression increased in irradiated dermal fibroblasts and skin tissue, and SASP and cell senescence were regulated by 5-LO through p38 phosphorylation. Finally, the inhibition of 5-LO following treatment with zileuton inhibited SASP and mitigated radiation ulcers in animal models. Our results demonstrate that inhibition of SASP from senescent cells by zileuton can effectively mitigate radiation-induced cutaneous ulcers, indicating that inhibition of 5-LO might be a viable strategy for patients with this condition. A smartphone contains electronic components that can inadvertently act as sources of unwanted vibration and noise. Also known as the "buzz," the noise is produced primarily by multilayer ceramic capacitors, the piezoelectric pulsation of which drives the circuit board into vibration, hence sound radiation. Given the close proximity of the smartphone to the ear, the audible noise, albeit low in amplitude, can be a nuisance and degrade the call quality. Thus accurate measurement and analysis of the noise are needed as the first step toward resolving the problem. The popular farfield-based techniques, however, are not applicable to smartphone-radiated noise because of its low sound pressure level (∼20 dB). This paper presents an alternative method based on nearfield acoustic holography (NAH), here tailored for a small mobile device radiating low-intensity noise. The NAH method is shown to be capable of visualizing sound pressure and intensity anywhere near the smartphone as well as the vibration of the circuit board, which could lead to an effective design strategy for a quieter smartphone. Lipocalin-2 (Lcn2; also known as neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin, NGAL) levels are increased in obesity and diabetes and associate with insulin resistance. Correlations exist between Lcn2 levels and various forms or stages of heart failure. Insulin resistance and autophagy both play well-established roles in cardiomyopathy. However, little is known about the impact of Lcn2 on insulin signaling in cardiomyocytes. In this study, we treated H9c2 cells with recombinant Lcn2 for 1 h followed by dose- and time-dependent insulin treatment and found that Lcn2 attenuated insulin signaling assessed via phosphorylation of Akt and p70S6K. We used multiple assays to demonstrate that Lcn2 reduced autophagic flux. First, Lcn2 reduced pULK1 S555, increased pULK1 S757 and reduced LC3-II levels determined by Western blotting. We validated the use of DQ-BSA to assess autolysosomal protein degradation and this together with MagicRed cathepsin B assay indicated that Lcn2 reduced lysosomal degradative activity. Furthermore, we generated H9c2 cells stably expressing tandem fluorescent RFP/GFP-LC3 and this approach verified that Lcn2 decreased autophagic flux. We also created an autophagy-deficient H9c2 cell model by overexpressing a dominant-negative Atg5 mutant and found that reduced autophagy levels also induced insulin resistance. Adding rapamycin after Lcn2 could stimulate autophagy and recover insulin sensitivity. In conclusion, our study indicated that acute Lcn2 treatment caused insulin resistance and use of gain and loss of function approaches elucidated a causative link between autophagy inhibition and regulation of insulin sensitivity by Lcn2.
