285. TE-Polarized Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) in Nonlinear Multi-layer Graphene-Based Waveguides: An Analytical Model

Abstract

In this article, an analytical model is proposed for the study of Transverse-electric (TE) surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in nonlinear multi-layer graphene-based waveguides. Each graphene sheet has been located between two different Kerr-type layers. As special cases of the general, proposed structure, two new nonlinear graphene-based waveguides are introduced and investigated in this paper. The obtained results show that the propagation properties of these exemplary structures are adjustable via chemical potential and nonlinear coefficients. A large value of the effective index, i.e. neff=82 is obtained for the chemical potential of 0.15 ev and the nonlinear ratio of 0.8 for the second structure at the frequency of 61 THz. The presented study suggests a novel platform in graphene plasmonics, which can be used for the design of innovative THz devices.

286. A Study into Pre-training Strategies for Spoken Language Understanding on Dysarthric Speech

Abstract

End-to-end (E2E) spoken language understanding (SLU) systems avoid an intermediate textual representation by mapping speech directly into intents with slot values. This approach requires considerable domain-specific training data. In low-resource scenarios this is a major concern, e.g., in the present study dealing with SLU for dysarthric speech. Pretraining part of the SLU model for automatic speech recognition targets helps but no research has shown to which extent SLU on dysarthric speech benefits from knowledge transferred from other dysarthric speech tasks. This paper investigates the efficiency of pre-training strategies for SLU tasks on dysarthric speech. The designed SLU system consists of a TDNN acoustic model for feature encoding and a capsule network for intent and slot decoding. The acoustic model is pre-trained in two stages: initialization with a corpus of normal speech and finetuning on a mixture of dysarthric and normal speech. By introducing the intelligibility score as a metric of the impairment severity, this paper quantitatively analyzes the relation between generalization and pathology severity for dysarthric speech., Comment: Accepted by Interspeech 2021

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel fuzzy action selection method to leverage human knowledge in reinforcement learning problems. Based on the estimates of the most current action-state values, the proposed fuzzy nonlinear mapping as-signs each member of the action set to its probability of being chosen in the next step. A user tunable parameter is introduced to control the action selection policy, which determines the agent's greedy behavior throughout the learning process. This parameter resembles the role of the temperature parameter in the softmax action selection policy, but its tuning process can be more knowledge-oriented since this parameter reflects the human knowledge into the learning agent by making modifications in the fuzzy rule base. Simulation results indicate that including fuzzy logic within the reinforcement learning in the proposed manner improves the learning algorithm's convergence rate, and provides superior performance.

288. Management in Architectural Design: A Reflection on the Profession and Education

Abstract

Because employers highlight time, cost, and quality factors in an architect's work environment, it has become essential to emphasize management techniques and the application of required skills in the project design process. The aim of this study is to compare the factors influencing the management of architectural design in both the professional and academic fields. A quantitative research method was adopted and, using questionnaires and the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), important factors were compared and analyzed. In this regard, six influential factors in architectural design management were identified: namely, project management, business management, education management, personal skills management, information management, and knowledge management. These factors were further classified into three areas: design processes, competitiveness, and structuring. These three areas were scaled according to their importance in academic and professional work. It was found that project management and business management had greater importance in professional environments, whereas education management, information management, personal skills management, and knowledge management had greater importance in the academic and educational environments.
