256. Controlling Pore Shape and Size of Interpenetrated Anion-Pillared Ultramicroporous Materials Enables Molecular Sieving of CO2Combined with Ultrahigh Uptake Capacity

Abstract

The separation of carbon dioxide (CO2) from hydrocarbons is a critical process for the production of clean energy and high-purity chemicals. Adsorption based on molecular sieving is an energy-saving separation process; however, most of molecular sieves with narrow and straight pore channels exhibit low CO2uptake capacity. Here, we report that a twofold interpenetrated copper coordination network with a consecutive pocket-like pore structure, namely, SIFSIX-14-Cu-i (SIFSIX = hexafluorosilicate, 14 = 4,4′-azopyridine, i = interpenetrated) is a remarkable CO2/CH4molecular sieving adsorbent which completely blocks the larger CH4molecule with unprecedented selectivity, whereas it has excellent CO2uptake (172.7 cm3/cm3) under the ambient condition. The exceptional separation performance of SIFSIX-14-Cu-i is attributed to its unique pore shape and functional pore surface, which combine a contracted pore window (3.4 Å) and a relatively large pore cavity decorated with high density of inorganic anions. Dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculation and neutron powder diffraction were performed to understand the CO2binding sites. The practical feasibility of SIFSIX-14-Cu-i for CO2/CH4mixtures separation was validated by experimental breakthrough tests. This study not only demonstrates the great potential of SIFSIX-14-Cu-i for CO2separation but also provides important clues for other gas separations.

Abstract

Polymeric resins are practically important adsorbents in a wide variety of applications, but they generally suffer from low surface areas and limited functionalized adsorption sites owing to their closely compacted and tangled polymeric chains. A metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer composite with enhanced adsorption capacity against the compacted polymeric resins was reported. The strategy to incorporate functionalized oligomer within the cavities of the MOF was demonstrated by the preparation of MIL-101(Cr) incorporated with N-methyl- d-glucamine-based organosiloxane polymer. The resulting MOF composite shows high efficiency for the removal of boric acid from water because of exceptionally high loading of functional groups responsible for the boron adsorption. Abstract

The last decade saw an explosion of interest in using amine-functionalized materials for CO2 capture and conversion, and it is of great importance to elucidate the relationship between the molecular structure of amine-functionalized materials and their CO2 capacity. In this work, based on a new quantitative analysis method for the CO2 absorption mechanism of amino-acid ionic liquids (ILs) and quantum chemical calculations, we show that the small difference in the local structure of amine groups in ILs could lead to much different CO2 absorption mechanisms, which provides an opportunity for achieving higher CO2 capacity by structure design. This work revealed that the actual CO2 absorption mechanism by amino-acid ILs goes beyond the apparent CO2/amine stoichiometry; a rigid ring structure around the amine group in ILs creates a unique electrostatic environment that inhibits the deprotonation of carbamic acid and enables actually equimolar CO2/amine absorption. Abstract

In this study, ethyl esters of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid were separated with simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography, where the stationary phase was C18 silica gel with particle size of 10 μm packed in eight columns, and the mobile phase was pure methanol. The Henry constants, transport parameters and total porosity were measured from pulse response chromatographic experiments using a single column. The Henry constants were obtained from the first moment analysis. The transport parameters including axial dispersion coefficients and effective mass transfer coefficients were obtained from the second moment analysis. Nonlinear adsorption equilibrium isotherms for the pure components and their mixture were determined from adsorption-desorption method. The Langmuir model was used to fit the experimental data, and the corresponding parameters were further used to predict the competitive adsorption equilibria of the mixture. The validity of mathematical model parameters was checked by a frontal chromatography experiment. The simulated results of the SMB process using these parameters agreed well with the experimental results. At the feed concentration of 100 g/L, the SMB separation was able to produce both solutes with relative purity above 99%, productivity of 13.11 g/L adsorbent/h, and solvent consumption of 0.46 L/g. Abstract

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been proposed as promising solvents for separating C2H2 and C2H4, but screening an industrially attractive IL with high capacity from numerous available ILs remains challenging. In this work, a rapid screening method based on COSMO-RS was developed. We also present an efficient strategy to improve the C2H2 capacity in ILs together with adequate C2H2/C2H4 selectivity with the aid of COSMO-RS. The essence of this strategy is to increase molecular free volume of ILs and simultaneously enhance hydrogen-bond basicity of anions by introducing flexible and highly asymmetric structures, which is validated by a new class of tetraalkylphosphonium ILs featuring long-chain carboxylate anions. At 298.1 K and 1 bar, the solubility of C2H2 in ILs reaches 0.476 mol/mol IL, very high for a physical absorption, with a selectivity of up to 21.4.
