Abstract

Epitaxial lateral overgrowth of InP was performed on patterned silicon-on-insulator (SOI) and compared with that on Si substrates in a low pressure hydride vapor phase epitaxy system. The InP was characterized by cathodoluminescence. No red shift of peak wavelength was detected for InP/SOI indicating a negligible thermal strain. Additional low energy peaks were found in some regions with a granular structure on the SOI template. A subsequent growth of an InGaAsP/InP MQW (multi quantum well) structure (λ∼1.5 μm) was grown on the SOI template and on a planar InP reference sample by metal-organic phase epitaxy. The MQW was characterized by room temperature photoluminescence. A red shift of 35 nm with respect to the reference sample was attributed to the selective-area effect causing thicker wells and/or an increased indium content. We present first results on heteroepitaxy of InP on silicon on insulator (SOI). We also demonstrate InP nanopillar fabrication by means of selective epitaxy. Abstract

In an experiment, choice-based utilities are derived from choices under risk, and choiceless utilities from introspective strength-of-preference judgments. The well-known inconsistencies of risky utility, when analyzed through expected utility, are resolved by means of prospect theory. A consistent cardinal utility index for risky choice results. Remarkably, however, this cardinal index agrees well with the choiceless utilities. This finding suggests a relation between a choice-based and a choiceless concept. Such a relation would imply that direct judgments can provide useful data for economics, and can reinforce the revealed-preference approach. Implications for the classical debate on ordinal versus cardinal utility are discussed., This is a preprint of an article to be published in Journal of Econometrics

Abstract

Veinte niños con fracturas femorales diafisarias simples fueron tratados mediante fijación externa con el aparato de Wagner. Once eran niños y 9 niñas, con una edad media de 8 años (3-15). Doce fracturas eran mediodiafisarias, 6 en el tercio proximal y 2 en el tercio distal. La hospitalización media fue de 9 días (5-20). La duración media de fijación externa fue de 61 días. Cinco casos precisaron de algún tratamiento adicional. En 3 pacientes se detectó una infección en el trayecto de los clavos y 1 de ellos necesitó retirada prematura del aparato. La movilidad articular de la rodilla se restableció de modo completo y constante excepto en 1 caso. En los casos seguidos más de 18 meses se observó un hipercrecimiento medio del fémur fracturado de 0,8 cm (0,5- 1,5). No hubo desaxaciones ni malrotaciones. Las ventajas de la fijación externa en el tratamiento de las fracturas femorales del niño incluyen Un mejor control de los fragmentos fracturarlos, una menor hospitalización y un cuidado más fácil y confortable de los pacientes. La infección del trayecto de los clavos parece ser la complicación más seria. En esta serie se detectó una curva de aprendizaje. Twenty children with simple femoral-shaft fractures were treated by monolateral external fixation with the Wagner device. There were 11 boys and 9 girls with a mean age of 8 years (3-15). Twelve fractures were located at the midshaft, 6 at the proximal third, and 2 other at the distal third of the femur. The mean hospital stay was 9 days (5-20). Mean external fixation time was 61 years. In 5 cases, additional methods of treatment were required. Pin tract infection occurred in 3 cases (one needed premature removal of the device). Except for one case, full range of knee motion was usually achieved after treatment. In patients followed for more than 18 months, a mean femoral overgrowth of 0.8 cm (0.5-1.5) was detected. Neither angular deformities nor malrotations were observed. In our experience, the main advantages of external fixation for femoral-shaft fractures in children include less hospitalization time and an easier and more confortable nursing. External fixation allows a better control of the bone fragments, providing an adequate stability. Pin tract infection seems to be the most important drawback. A learning curve was observed in this series.

268. Aspectos epidemiológicos del traumatismo múltiple en un hospital de referencia: experiencia de 1 año

Abstract

Se ha realizado un estudio epidemiológico de los traumatismos múltiples (TM) atendidos en el Servicio de Traumatología del Hospital Clínico de Valencia en 1992. De los 285 casos ingresados en el centro, 180 tuvieron su ingreso final en el Servicio de Traumatología. Ciento treinta y tres casos fueron varones y 47 mujeres, con edad media de 33 años. Se analizaron las variables edad, sexo, mecanismo lesional, días de ingreso, tipos de lesión, asociación de lesiones y tratamiento realizado. Por edad, la mayor incidencia fue de los l1 a los 40 años. La causa principal fue el accidente de tráfico. El Injury Severity Score (ISS) medio para toda la serie fue de 12,5 (rango: 3-48). El 75% de los pacientes tenían lesiones musculoesqueléticas en forma aislada. Las lesiones asociadas fueron traumatismo craneoencefálico (76 casos), traumatismo torácico (7 casos), traumatismo abdominal (6 casos) y combinaciones de ellos (16 casos). Se contabilizaron 345 fracturas (1,9 por paciente). La mayor frecuencia se observó en la extremidad inferior (48%), siendo la tibia el hueso más frecuentemente afectado. En total de 166 fracturas fueron tratadas en forma ortopédica, mientras que en 183 de ellas se realizó tratamiento quirúrgico (1,1 intervenciones por paciente). La estancia media hospitalaria fue de 14 días, con un tiempo de hospitalización significativamente mayor en los pacientes con un ISS mayor de 9. The cases of multiple trauma admitted in the University Clinic Hospital of Valencia during 1992 were epidemiologically assessed. A group of 180 patients were finally admitted in the Trauma Unit from a total of 285 hospital admittances. There were 133 men and 47 women, with mean age of 33 years. Age, sex, etiology, period of hospital discharge, type of injury, associated lesions and treatment were recorded from clinical charts. The age group between 11 and 40 years was the most frequently affected. Traffic accident was the most important cause of injury. The mean Injury Severity Score (ISS) for the hole series was 12,4 (3-48). Isolated musculoskeletal injury was found in 75% of the cases. Associated lesions were head trauma (76 cases), thoracic trauma (seven cases) and abdominal trauma (six cases). More than two combinations were found in 16 cases. A total of 345 fractures were recorded (1.9 fractures per patient). The highest frequency was observed in the lower extremity (48%). The tibia was the most affected bone. Conservative treatment was applied in 166 cases, while 183 cases were treated surgically (1.1 surgeries per patient). The mean hospital discharge was 14 days. Patients with ISS > 9 showed a significant higher hospital stay as compared to those with ISS < 9.

Abstract

In the past few years we have shown that mycobacterial heat shock proteins (hsp) of 65 and 70 kD exert a very strong helper effect in mice and monkeys when conjugated to peptides and oligosaccharides and given in the absence of adjuvants. In the present study we show that this adjuvant-free helper effect (i) is not due to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), since it was observed in LPS-resistant mice (C3H/HeJ) immunized with hsp-based constructs containing the malaria peptide (NANP)40, and (ii) is characteristic of hsp, since it was not observed with conjugates containing the mycobacterial p38 antigen, which is not a stress protein. Interestingly, the hsp GroEL and DnaK of Escherichia coli, which share a high degree of homology with the mycobacterial 65-kD and 70-kD hsp, respectively, exhibit a strong in vivo helper effect when conjugated to the (NANP)40 peptide, and the conjugates given in the absence of adjuvants. This in vivo helper behaviour of the GroEL and DnaK proteins corresponds well to that observed with the mycobacterial 65-kD and 70-kD hsp, respectively, since the hsp65- and GroEL-based constructs require previous priming of the animals with live bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG), which is not needed for the hsp70- and DnaK-based constructs. Finally, using both mycobacterial and E. coli hsp we show that their in vivo helper effect in the absence of adjuvants requires cross-linking to the synthetic peptide. Taken together, our results suggest that the adjuvant-free helper effect observed with mycobacterial and E. coli hsp may be a generalized phenomenon, exhibited by hsp from diverse microorganisms. These findings may find applications in the design of vaccine constructs.

Abstract

We apply time-resolved photoluminescence with 1-2 mum spatial resolution for the characterization of deep centre distributions in semi-insulating GaInP:Fe and GaAs:Fe epitaxial layers regrown by hydride vapour phase epitaxy around etched GaAs mesas and GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well laser structures. In InGaP, Fe ions act as the main carrier recombination centres, while in Fe-doped GaAs both the Fe ions and As antisite defects have to be considered. The distribution of Fe ions in InGaP was found to be rather uniform and close to the target value. For GaAs:Fe, the number of ionized Fe and EL2 centres showed a certain increase at the mesa interfaces. In both cases, the high trap concentration was maintained throughout the regrown layers indicating good semi-insulating material properties., QC 20100525

Abstract

We apply time-resolved photoluminescence with 1.5 mum spatial resolution for characterization ofcarrier trap distribution in semi-insulating Ga0.51In0.49P:Fe layers regrown around GaAs/AlGaAs circular vertical cavity surface emitting laser mesas using hydride vapour phase epitaxy. The carrier trapping times are in the range from 10 to 15 ps and quite uniformly distributed throughout the burying GaInP:Fe layer, suggesting that the layer is semi-insulating everywhere. Simulations show that, in addition to the Fe dopants, the layer contains other, unintended carrier traps. The photoluminescence spectra reveal that the regrown GaInP:Fe material has several distinct regions with different band gaps. This is attributed to differences in the In/Ga composition and/or CuPt ordering of the GaInP., QC 20100525
