The adsorption efficiency of activated biochar prepared from cactus fibres regarding the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions has been investigated as a function of various physicochemical parameters (e.g. pH, initial metal concentration, ionic strength, temperature and contact time). Activation of the biochar took place using nitric acid oxidation and characterisation was performed by SEM analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, N2 adsorption and acid-base titrations. The results show that laminar structures constitute the material and carboxylic moieties are the predominant binding sites. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption models and the monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 3.5 mol kg(-1). The effect of ionic strength and temperature on the adsorption efficiency indicates that at low pH outer-sphere and at near neutral pH inner-sphere complexes are the predominant surface species and the kinetic data obtained were fitted very well by the Lagergren rate expression., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. 1,3,7,8-Tetraphenyl-4,8-dihydro-1H-imidazolo[4,5g][1,2,4]benzotriazin-4-yl (5), 8-(4-bromophenyl)-1,3,7-triphenyl-4,8-dihydro-1H-imidazolo[4,5g][1,2,4]benzotriazin-4-yl (6), and 8-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,7-triphenyl-4,8-dihydro-1H-imidazolo[4,5g][1,2,4]benzotriazin-4-yl (7) were characterized by using X-ray diffraction crystallography, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies, and DFT calculations. Radicals 5-7 pack in 1 D π stacks made of radical pairs with alternate short and long interplanar distances. The magnetic susceptibility (χ vs. T) of radicals 5 and 6 exhibit broad maxima at (50±2) and (50±4) K, respectively, and are interpreted in terms of an alternating antiferromagnetic Heisenberg linear chain model with average exchange-interaction values of J = -31.3 and -35.4 cm(-1) (gsolid = 2.0030 and 2.0028) and an alternation parameter a = 0.15 and 0.38 for 5 and 6, respectively. However, radical 7 forms 1 D columns of radical pairs with alternating distances; one of the interplanar distances is significantly longer than the other, which decreases the magnetic dimensionality and leads to discrete dimers with a ferromagnetic exchange interaction between the radicals (2J = 23.6 cm(-1) , 2zJ' = -2.8 cm(-1) , gsolid = 2.0028). Magnetic exchange-coupling interactions in 1,2,4-benzotriazinyl radicals are sensitive to the degree of slippage and inter-radical separation, and such subtle changes in structure alter the fine balance between ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Reductive ring contraction of 1,3-diphenyl-1,4-dihydrobenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-4-yls (Blatter's radicals) using zinc powder (2 equiv.) in acetic acid heated to ca. 118 °C gives 1,2-diphenylbenzimidazoles in high yield. 1,3-Diphenylbenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-7(1H)-one and the zwitterionic tetraphenylhexaazaanthracene (TPHA) also undergo reductive ring contractions to give 1,2-diphenylbenzimidaz-6-ol and 1,2,6,7-tetraphenyl-1,7-dihydrobenzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']diimidazole, respectively. By using less zinc, the incomplete reduction of TPHA gave the stable organic radical 1,3,7,8-tetraphenyl-4,8-dihydro-1H-imidazo[4,5-g][1,2,4]benzotriazin-1-yl. Imidazolo-, oxazolo- and thiazolo-fused 1,2,4-benzotriazinyls all undergo zinc mediated ring contractions to give imidazolo-, oxazolo- and thiazolo-fused benzimidazoles in excellent yields.

We have synthesized and isolated two C2-symmetric enantiomerically pure trisadducts of C60 with an inherently chiral trans-3,trans-3,trans-3 addition pattern with the aid of an enantiopure cyclo-tris-malonate tether. An unexpected stereoisomerism was observed which was attributed to the spatial arrangement of spacers in the tether.

In recent years, cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) have drawn scientific interest, particularly due to their implications on human health. A big number of these compounds have been demonstrated to be cytotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic. The main source of COPs is through diet, and particularly from the consumption of cholesterol-rich foods. This raises questions about the safety of consumers, and it suggests the necessity for the development of a sensitive and a reliable analytical method in order to identify and quantify these components in food samples. Sample preparation is a necessary step in the analysis of COPs in order to eliminate interferences and increase sensitivity. Numerous publications have, over the years, reported the use of different methods for the extraction and purification of COPs. However, no method has, so far, been established as a routine method for the analysis of COPs in foods. Therefore, it was considered important to overview different sample preparation procedures and evaluate the different preparative parameters, such as time of saponification, the type of organic solvents for fat extraction, the stationary phase in solid phase extraction, etc., according to recovery, precision and simplicity., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A detailed analysis of the resonance Raman depolarization ratio dispersion curve for the N-O symmetric stretch of nitryl chloride in methanol at excitation wavelengths spanning the D absorption band is presented. The depolarization ratios are modeled using the time-dependent formalism for Raman scattering with contributions from two excited states (2(1)A1 and 3(1)B1), which are taken as linearly dissociative along the Cl-N coordinate. The analysis focuses on the interplay between different types of broadening revealing the importance of inhomogenous broadening in determining the relative contributions of the two electronic transitions. We find that the transition dipole moment (M) for 2(1)A1 is greater than for 3(1)B1, in agreement with gas phase calculations in the literature [A. Lesar, M. Hdoscek, M. Muhlhauser, and S. D. Peyerimhoff, Chem. Phys. Lett. 383, 84 (2004)]. However, we find that the polarity of the solvent influences the excited state energetics, leading to a reversal in the ordering of these two states with 3(1)B1 shifting to lower energies. Molecular dynamics simulations along with linear response and ab initio calculations support the evidence extracted from resonance Raman intensity analysis, providing insights on ClNO2 electronic structure, solvation effects in methanol, and the source of broadening, emphasizing the importance of a contribution from inhomogeneous linewidth.

A two-step route to 1,3-disubstituted benzo- and pyrido-fused 1,2,4-triazinyl radicals is presented. The route involves the N'-(2-nitroarylation) of easily prepared N'-(het)arylhydrazides via nucleophilic aromatic substitution of 1-halo-2-nitroarenes, which in most cases gives N'-(het)aryl-N'-[2-nitro(het)aryl]hydrazides in good yields. Mild reduction of the nitro group followed by an acid-mediated cyclodehydration gives the fused triazines, which upon alkali treatment afford the desired radicals. Fifteen examples of radicals are presented bearing a range of substituents at N-1, C-3, and C-7, including the pyrid-2-yl and 8-aza analogues. This route to the N'-(het)aryl-N'-[2-nitro(het)aryl]hydrazides, which works well with benzo- and picolinohydrazides, required a modification for aceto- and trifluoroacetohydrazides that involved a multistep synthesis of asymmetrically 1,1-diaryl-substituted hydrazines.

The competitive adsorption of boric acid and chromate from aqueous solutions by alumina has been investigated by spectrophotometry at pH 8, ionic strength = 0.0, 0.1 and 1.0 M NaClO4, T = 22 ± 3 °C and under normal atmospheric conditions. The experimental data show that addition of excess boric acid in the system leads to the increase of Cr(VI) concentration in solution, indicating the replacement of adsorbed chromate by boron on the alumina surface. Data evaluation results in the determination of the competition reaction constant and the formation constant of the Cr(VI) surface complexes, which are logKCr(VI)-B(III) = -3.5 ± 0.2 and logβ*Cr = 7.6 ± 0.3, respectively.

A pentakis-adduct of C60 with an incomplete octahedral addition pattern was synthesised via a one-pot procedure using a tether equipped with five malonate moieties. The five-fold Bingel cyclopropanation of C60 was completely regioselective and afforded a chiral, C2-symmetric pentakis-adduct which was easily separated by column chromatography on SiO2.

The use of the anion of 3-methyl-1,3,5-pentanetriol (mpt(3-)) in manganese carboxylate chemistry has afforded the new Mn(II/III)12 cluster [Mn(II)6Mn(III)6(mpt)6(CH3CO2)12(py)6]·3CH3CN (1·3CH3CN). Complex 1 was isolated in moderate yield by the reaction of Mn(CH3CO2)2·4H2O and H3mpt in a 2.6:1 molar ratio in a solvent mixture of acetonitrile and pyridine. The structure of 1 consists of alternating [Mn(II)2(CH3CO2)3(py)](+) and [Mn(III)2(μ-OR)2(CH3CO2)(py)](3+) dimeric units (three of each dimer), linked at each end by two alkoxo and one acetate bridges; the mpt(3-) ligands adopt the η(2):η(2):η(2):μ4 coordination mode. The overall metal topology of this new Mn12 wheel resembles a guitar plectrum, or a Reuleaux triangle. Complex 1 displays an unprecedented structural topology, being the first example of a Mn(II)6Mn(III)6 wheel constructed from alternating homovalent dimers and the only known Mn12 loop with the trigonal symmetry of a Reuleaux triangle (all other reported loops were ellipsoids). Variable-temperature, solid-state direct- and alternating-current magnetization studies were carried out on complex 1, revealing the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the metal ions in the molecule, which lead to a spin ground-state value S = 0; the exchange coupling parameters J were calculated using density functional theory employing a hybrid B3LYP functional.

7-(Fur-2-yl)benzotriazinyl 1 is the first example of a hydrazyl radical dimer with a thermally accessible triplet state. The triplet exciton (|D| = 0.018 cm(-1), |E| = 0.001 cm(-1)) was observed by solid-state VT-EPR spectroscopy between 5 and 140 K. VT crystallography, DFT calculations and magnetic susceptibility studies reveal a strong temperature dependence of the intra-dimer exchange interaction with J/k ~ -254 + 0.0007T(2).

2-Amino-N'-arylbenzamidines react with 4,5-dichloro-1,2,3-dithiazolium chloride (Appel salt) in the presence of Hünig's base (2 equiv) to give in one step 3-aryl-4-imino-3,4-dihydroquinazoline-2-carbonitriles in 53-81% yields. Nine examples are presented along with the single-crystal X-ray structure of 4-imino-3-phenyl-3,4-dihydroquinazoline-2-carbonitrile. Furthermore, the behavior of the latter toward both acid and base hydrolysis is investigated. All new compounds are fully characterized, and a mechanistic rationale for the formation of the iminoquinazolines is provided.

Eight 2-phenyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]quinoline-9-carbonitriles 15 are prepared in four steps from N'-arylbenzamidines 11 and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) in ~70-90% yields. The transformation involves the initial formation of N-aryl-N'-(1,2,2-tricyanovinyl)benzamidines 12 in 87-99% yields, which in MeCN undergo a 5-exodig cyclization to give the 2-[1-aryl-5-imino-2-phenyl-1H-imidazol-4(5H)-ylidene]malononitriles 13 in 84-92% yields, while in MeOH the (Z)-2-[2-phenyl-4-(arylimino)-1H-imidazol-5(4H)-ylidene]malononitriles 14 are formed in 85-94% yields. The imidazoles 14 can also be prepared directly from imidazoles 13 via a Dimroth rearrangement in either neat MeOH or in DCM with DBU. Subsequent thermolysis of imidazoles 14 in diphenyl ether affords 2-phenyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]quinoline-9-carbonitriles 15 in near quantitative yields. Mechanistic rationale is provided for all transformations.

In this study, simple electrophoretic methods were developed for the chiral separation of the clinically important compounds fucose and pipecolic acid. In recent years, these analytes, and particularly their individual enantiomers, have attracted considerable attention due to their role in biological functions and disorders. The detectability and sensitivity of pipecolic acid and fucose were improved by reacting them with fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl chloride (FMOC-Cl) and 5-amino-2-naphthalene-sulfonic acid (ANSA), respectively. The enantioseparation conditions were optimized by initially investigating the type of the chiral selector. Different chiral selectors, such as polymeric surfactants and cyclodextrins, were used and the most effective ones were determined with regard to resolution and analysis time. A 10-mM β-cyclodextrin was able to separate the enantiomers of ANSA-DL-fucose and the polymeric surfactant poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-LL-leucine-valinate) was able to separate the enantiomers of FMOC-DL-pipecolic acid, with resolution values of 3.45 and 2.78, respectively. Additional parameters, such as the concentration and the pH of the background electrolyte (BGE), the concentration of the chiral selector, and the addition of modifiers were examined in order to optimize the separations. The addition of the chiral ionic liquid D-alanine tert-butyl ester lactate into the BGE was also investigated, for the first time, in order to improve resolution of the enantiomers., (© 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Specific ion effects on oligopeptide conformations in solution are attracting strong research attention, because of their impact on the protein-folding problem and on several important biological-biotechnological applications. In this work, we have addressed specific effects of electrolytes on the tendency of oligopeptides toward formation and propagation of helical segments. We have used replica-exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) simulations to study the conformations of two short hydrophobic peptides [Ace-(AAQAA)3-Nme (AQ), and Ace-A8-Nme (A8)] in pure water and in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium iodide (NaI) with concentrations of 1 and 3 M. The average helicities of the AQ peptide have been analyzed to yield Lifson-Roig (LR) parameters for helix nucleation and helix propagation. The salt dependence of these parameters suggests that electrolytes tend to stabilize the helical conformations of short peptides by enhancing the helix nucleation parameter. The helical conformations of longer oligopeptides are destabilized in the presence of salts, however, because the helix propagation parameters are reduced by electrolytes. On top of this general trend, we observe a significant specific salt effect in these simulations. The hydrophobic iodide ion in NaI solutions has a high affinity for the peptide backbone, which reflects itself in an enhanced helix nucleation and a reduced helix propagation parameter with respect to pure water or NaCl solutions. The present work thus explains the computational evidence that electrolytes tend to stabilize the compact conformations of short peptides and destabilize them for longer peptides, and it also sheds additional light on the specific salt effects on compact peptide conformations.

In this Article, we describe the synthesis of two optically pure diols bearing a 1,2-diol moiety masked as an isopropylidene acetal group and long alkyl chains comprised of 12 and 14 carbon atoms, respectively. The synthetic methodology that was developed offers a general way for the synthesis of optically pure diols with long alkyl chains. Diols (-)-4 and (-)-9 were subjected to a condensation reaction with malonyl dichloride to afford two cyclo-[2]-malonate tethers that were separated by column chromatography in optically pure form. The bismalonates (-)-4b and (-)-9b proved to be excellent tethers for the regioselective Bingel functionalization of C60, furnishing in a regioselective manner the corresponding (f,s)C and (f,s)A trans-3 bisadducts with low diastereoselectivity but in very good to excellent total yields. In both cases, the formed trans-3 bisadducts were isolated in pure form by simple column chromatography and were fully characterized. The successful acetal deprotection of the synthesized trans-3 bisadducts afforded quantitatively the corresponding polyalcohols, which represent novel chiral fullerene compounds equipped with glycol moieties.

Identification of the intermediates and determination of their structures in the reduction of dioxygen to water by cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) are particularly important to understanding both O2 activation and proton pumping by the enzyme. In this work, we report the products of the rapid reaction of O2 with the mixed valence form (CuA(2+), heme a(3+), heme a3(2+)-CuB(1+)) of the enzyme. The resonance Raman results show the formation of two ferryl-oxo species with characteristic Fe(IV)=O stretching modes at 790 and 804 cm(-1) at the peroxy oxidation level (PM). Density functional theory calculations show that the protein environment of the proximal H-bonded His-411 determines the strength of the distal Fe(IV)=O bond. In contrast to previous proposals, the PM intermediate is also formed in the reaction of Y167F with O2. These results suggest that in the fully reduced enzyme, the proton pumping ν(Fe(IV)=O) = 804 cm(-1) to ν(Fe(IV)=O) = 790 cm(-1) transition (P→F, where P is peroxy and F is ferryl) is triggered not only by electron transfer from heme a to heme a3 but also by the formation of the H-bonded form of the His-411-Fe(IV)=O conformer in the proximal site of heme a3. The implications of these results with respect to the role of an O=Fe(IV)-His-411-H-bonded form to the ring A propionate of heme a3-Asp-399-H2O site and, thus, to the exit/output proton channel (H2O) pool during the proton pumping P→F transition are discussed. We propose that the environment proximal to the heme a3 controls the spectroscopic properties of the ferryl intermediates in cytochrome oxidases.

Resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy is used to investigate the effect of β-cyclodextrin encapsulation on the structural and photophysical properties of poly(4,4'-diphenylenevinylene). We especially focus on the thermal stability of the polymer. We find that within the range of 10-55 °C the uninsulated polymer exhibits decreased Raman intensity in all the vibrational bands with temperature, along with changes in the relative intensity of the C-C inter-ring stretch mode at 1270 cm(-1) with respect to the ring C-H in-plane symmetric bend at 1187 cm(-1), which provides evidence for conformational changes as a function of temperature. No changes are observed in the intensity of the in-phase CH out-of-plane wag of the vinylene group at 968 cm(-1). Therefore, the conformational changes involve mainly dihedral angle modification between the adjacent phenyl rings toward planarization, and little or no change in the planarity of the trans-vinylene group. The decrease of the optical absorption at 55 °C with respect to that at room temperature and the appearance of a new absorption band at lower energies explain the decrease in the RR intensities and the wavelength dependence of the relative intensities of the Raman band. We note that the conformational change into a more planar geometry, which affects a significant portion of the polymer population, is irreversible and consistent with thermally induced aggregation. Such a planarization is unexpected in view of the usually observed thermochromic behavior of conjugated polymers, which leads to an increase of the energy gap for increasing temperature, as the average dihedral angles are increased due to excitation of a larger number of vibrational modes. Interestingly, the higher threading ratio polymers are resistant to any conformational changes within this temperature range, as reflected by their unchanged RR spectra, due to the rotaxane's ability to suppress intermolecular interactions and aggregation. Interestingly, the conformation of the uninsulated polymer at room temperature appears to be the same as that in the threaded analogues, which suggests that the cyclodextrin cavity hosts the polymer without physically interacting with it.

In this study, the dissolution of polysaccharides into an ionic liquid was investigated and applied as a coating onto the capillary walls of a fused-silica capillary in open-tubular CEC. The coating was evaluated by examining the chiral separation of two analytes (thiopental, sotalol) with three cellulose derivatives (cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate phthalate, and cellulose acetate butyrate). Baseline separation of thiopental enantiomers was achieved by use of each polysaccharide coating (Rs: 7.0, 8.1, 7.1), while sotalol provided partial resolution (Rs: 0.7, 1.0, 0.9). In addition, reproducibility of the cellulose-coated capillaries was evaluated by estimating the run-to-run and capillary-to-capillary RSD values of the EOF. In this work, we prepared oriented mesoporous thin films of silica on various solid substrates using the pluronic block copolymer P123 as a template. We attempted to insert guest iron oxide (Fe x O y ) nanoparticles into these films by two different methods: (a) by co-precipitation-where iron precursors are introduced in the synthesis sol before deposition of the silica film-and subsequent oxide production during the film calcination step; (b) by preparing and calcining the silica films first then impregnating them with the iron precursor, obtaining the iron oxide nanoparticles by a second calcination step. We have examined the structural effects of the guest nanoparticles on the silica film structures using grazing incidence X-ray scattering (GISAXS), high-resolution transmission electron spectroscopy (HRTEM), spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman microscopy. Formation of nanoparticles by co-precipitation may induce substantial changes in the film structure leading, in our adopted process, to the appearance of lamellar ordering in the calcination stage. On the contrary, impregnation-based approaches perturb the film structures much more weakly, but are also less efficient in filling the pores with nanoparticles.

This research work describes the development of a fast high-performance liquid chromatography method for the simultaneous determination of five important cholesterol oxidation products (COPs). The influence of various experimental parameters, such as the composition of the mobile phase, the flow rate and the column temperature, were investigated. Baseline separation was achieved by using acetonitrile-methanol-water-isopropanol (67:27:5:1) as a mobile phase with a 10°C column temperature. The developed method demonstrated good linearity and high reproducibility, with relative standard deviation values below 1.26% for all the COPs that were examined. The method was then applied, for the first time, to Cypriot smoked-meat products (lountza and hiromeri). The presence of COPs in these products suggests that the preparation of the meat products, and particularly the smoking process, possibly favors the oxidation of cholesterol. Finally, three different sample preparation procedures were evaluated and the optimum procedure was determined based on recovery, precision and simplicity.

A 1-D coordination polymer, constructed using a combination of diols and phenolic oximes, contains a novel [Mn(9)] sub-unit, a nanosized [Mn(40)] octagonal super-structure and a [Mn(21)] repeating unit.

In this study, the applicability of a chiral ionic liquid (CIL) as the sole chiral selector in CE was investigated for the first time. In particular, five amino acid ester-based CILs were synthesized and used as additives in the BGE in order to evaluate their chiral recognition ability. The performance of these CILs as the sole chiral selectors was evaluated by using 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2-diylhydrogenphosphate (BNP) as the analyte and by comparing the resolution values. Different parameters were examined, such as the alkyl group bulkiness and the configuration of the cation, the anion type of the CIL and its concentration, and the pH of the BGE, in order to optimize the separation of the enantiomers and to demonstrate the effect that each parameter has on the chiral-recognition ability of the CIL. Baseline separation of BNP within 13 min was achieved by using a BGE of 100 mM Tris/10 mM sodium tetraboratedecahydrate (pH 8) and a chiral selector of 60 mM l-alanine tert butyl ester lactate. The run-to-run and batch-to-batch reproducibilities were also evaluated by computing the %RSD values of the EOF and the two enantiomer peaks. The thermolysis of several N-(4-chloro-5H-1,2,3-dithiazol-5-ylidene)pyridin-n-amines (where n = 2, 3 and 4) gives a mixture of thiazolopyridine-2-carbonitriles in low to moderate yields. Introduction, by design, of a chlorine substituent at the C2 or C4 position of N-(4-chloro-5H-1,2,3-dithiazol-5-ylidene)pyridin-3-amine and other selected azines enables a BnEt(3)NI mediated ANRORC style ring transformation that provides fourteen heteroazine fused thiazole-2-carbonitriles in moderate to near quantitative yields. The synthesis described herein therefore provides a facile high yielding two-step route to heteroazine fused thiazole-2-carbonitriles starting from 4,5-dichloro-1,2,3-dithiazolium chloride (Appel salt) and ortho- or para-chloro substituted meta-aminoazines.

Halogens such as chlorine are converted from halides, including ClNO(2), to reactive radicals by UV solar radiation. These radicals can affect ozone production and destruction in the stratosphere. Recently, it became clear that halogen radicals can also play a significant role in the chemistry of the troposphere. The photochemistry of ClNO(2) has been the subject of several studies in the gas and solid state that demonstrated a clear phase-dependent reactivity. Here, we report our initial studies of nitryl chloride in solution. Resonance Raman (RR) spectra of ClNO(2) dissolved in methanol after excitation within the 1(1)A(1)-2(1)A(1) absorption band (D band) in the region 200-240 nm are presented. RR intensity along the NO symmetric stretch coordinate (v(1)) at 1291 cm(-1) is observed at all excitation wavelengths, whereas limited intensity corresponding to the transition of the N-Cl symmetric stretch (v(3)) was only observed at 199.8 nm, whereas no intensity corresponding to the O-N-O symmetric bend (v(2)) was observed. Depolarization ratios and absolute resonance Raman cross sections for v(1) were obtained at several excitation wavelengths spanning the D band. Depolarization ratios were found to deviate significantly from 1/3, consistent with more than a single dipole-allowed electronic transition contributing to the scattering. RR intensity analysis (RRIA) reveals that two closely spaced excited electronic states contribute to the scattering, which are dissociative along the Cl-N coordinate. In this study the role the solvent environment plays in ClNO(2) state energetics and excited structural evolution along fundamental coordinates is discussed.

The adsorption efficiency of a biomass by-product (cactus fibres) regarding the removal of copper(II) from aqueous solutions has been investigated before and after its chemical treatment. The chemical treatment of the biomass by-product included phosphorylation and MnO2-coating. The separation/removal efficiency has been studied as a function of pH, Cu(II) concentration, ionic strength, temperature and contact time. Evaluation of the experimental data shows that the MnO2-coated product presents the highest adsorption capacity, followed by the non-treated and phosphorylated material. Regarding the effect of ionic strength/salinity on the adsorption, in contrast to the removal efficiency of the phosphorylated product, which is significantly affected, the MnO2-coated and non-treated material don't show any effect, indicating the formation of inner-sphere surface complexes. The adsorption reaction is in all cases endothermic and relatively fast, particularly the adsorption on the MnO2-coated product. The results of the present study indicate that for the removal of bivalent metal-ions from contaminated waters the MnO2-coated material is expected to be the most effective adsorbent and an alternative to MnO2 resins for the treatment of environmentally relevant waters.

This review article provides an overview of the recent advances in enantioanalysis by use of electrophoretic techniques. Due to the big number of publications in the subject mentioned above, this article is focused on chiral method developments and applications published from 2008 until 2011, and it demonstrates chiral selectors used in CE. Numerous chiral selectors have been used over the years, and these include the cyclic and the linear oligo- and polysaccharides, the branched polysaccharides, the polymeric and monomeric surfactants, the macrocyclic and other antibiotics, and the crown ethers. Different dual-selector systems are also presented in this article, and the results are compared with those obtained by use of a single chiral selector. Electrolytes are known to impart considerable disorder to lipid assemblies, including monolayers at the air-water interface, bilayers, and vesicles. In the present work, we have investigated the disordering effect of sodium salts of monovalent anions that span the lyotropic series on the monolayers of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-phosphocholine (DPPC) at 12 °C. Pressure-area isotherms, Brewster-angle microscopy (BAM), grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), and infrared absorption-reflection spectroscopy (IRRAS) were used to investigate in complementary ways the salt effects on lipid monolayers. At 12 °C these effects were found to be quite dramatic, a major finding being that the liquid-expanded phase, which is not present at this temperature on a pure water subphase, reappears and dominates in the presence of electrolytes. Salts expand the monolayer, destroy the ordered phase that exists at zero pressure, and affect the ordering of the lipid chains and their tilt angle in the liquid condensed phase. Finally, very chaotropic anions force DPPC lipids to adopt an untilted conformation in the condensed phase, an unprecedented finding for nonmixed Langmuir monolayers of this phospholipid. A distinctly different behavior of very chaotropic anions from that of normal chaotropic ones thus emerges. The effect of the former is not just a limited perturbation of the lipid assembly but a major disruption of the structure, which arises from competition between the lipids and the ions for interfacial sites.

Reaction of the N,N-disubstituted bis(hydroxylamino) ligand 2,6-bis[hydroxy(methyl)amino]-4-morpholino-1,3,5-triazine (H(2)bihyat) with cis-[Mo(VI)O(2)(acac)(2)] in tetrahydrofuran resulted in isolation of the mononuclear compound cis-[Mo(VI)O(2)(bihyat)] (1). The treatment of Na(2)Mo(VI)O(4)·2H(2)O with the ligand H(2)bihyat in aqueous solution gave the dinuclear compounds cis-[Mo(VI)(2)O(4)(bihyat)(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (2) and trans-[Mo(VI)(2)O(4)(bihyat)(2)(H(2)O)(2)] (3) at pH values of 3.5 and 5.5, respectively. The structures for the three molybdenum(VI) compounds were determined by X-ray crystallography. Compound 1 has a square-pyramidal arrangement around molybdenum, while in the two dinuclear compounds, each molybdenum atom is in a distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal environment of two bridging and one terminal oxido groups, a tridentate (O,N,O) bihyat(2-) ligand that forms two five-membered chelate rings, and a water molecule trans to the terminal oxido group. The dinuclear compounds constitute rare examples containing the {Mo(2)(VI)O(2)(μ(2)-O(2))}(4+) moiety. The potentiometry revealed that the Mo(VI)bihyat(2-) species exhibit high hydrolytic stability in aqueous solution at a narrow range of pH values, 3-5. A subtle change in the coordination environment of the five-coordinate compound 1 with ligation of a weakly bound water molecule trans to the oxido ligand (1w) renders the equatorial oxido group in 1w more nucleophilic than that in 1, and this oxido group attacks a molybdenum atom and thus the dinuclear compounds 2 and 3 are formed. This process might be considered as the first step of the oxido group nucleophilic attack on organic substrates, resulting in oxidation of the substrate, in the active site of molybdenum enzymes such as xanthine oxidase. Theoretical calculations in the gas phase were performed to examine the influence of water on the dimerization process (1 → 2/3). In addition, the molecular structures, cis/trans geometrical isomerism for the dinuclear molybdenum(VI) species, vibrational spectra, and energetics of the metal-ligand interaction for the three molybdenum(VI) compounds 1-3 have been studied by means of density functional theory calculations.

7-(4-Fluorophenyl) and 7-phenyl-substituted 1,3-diphenyl-1,4-dihydro-1,2,4-benzotriazin-4-yl radicals were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies. The radicals pack in 1D π stacks of equally spaced slipped radicals with interplanar distances of 3.59 and 3.67 Å and longitudinal angles of 40.97 and 43.47°, respectively. Magnetic-susceptibility studies showed that both radicals exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions. Fitting the magnetic data revealed that the behavior is consistent with 1D regular linear antiferromagnetic chain with J=-12.9 cm(-1), zJ'=-0.4 cm(-1), g=2.0069 and J=-11.8 cm(-1), zJ'=-6.5 cm(-1), g=2.0071, respectively. Magnetic-exchange interactions in benzotriazinyl radicals are sensitive to the degree of slippage, and inter-radical separation and subtle changes in structure alter the fine balance between ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A Blatter radical is oxidized to benzotriazin-7(H)-one which after amination and subsequent acyl- and aroylation gives N-(benzotriazin-6-yl)carboxamides that undergo ring closure with P(2)S(5) to afford the corresponding thiazolo[5',4':4,5]benzo[1,2-e][1,2,4]triazin-4-yls. These highly delocalized radicals are air stable and show good reversible electrochemical behavior.

FTIR and light-minus-dark FTIR spectroscopy have been employed to investigate the reaction of oxidized and fully reduced ba(3) oxidase with cyanide. The characterization of the structures of the bound CN(-) in the binuclear heme Fe-Cu(B) center is essential, given that a central issue in the function of ba(3) oxidase is the extent to which the partially reduced substrates interact with the two metals. In the reaction of oxidized ba(3) oxidase with cyanide the initially formed heme a(3)(3+)-C≡N-Cu(B)(2+) species with ν(CN) frequency at 2152 cm(-1) was replaced by a photolabile complex with a frequency at 2075 cm(-1) characteristic of heme a(3)(2+)-CN(-). Photolysis of the heme a(3)(2+)-CN(-) adduct produced a band at 2146 cm(-1) attributed to the formation of a transient Cu(B)(2+)-CN(-) complex. All forms are pH independent between pH 5.5-9.5 and at pD 7.5 indicating the absence of ionizable groups that influence the properties of the cyanide complexes. In contrast to previous reports, our results show that CN(-) does not bind simultaneously to both heme a(3)(2+) and Cu(B)(2+) to form the mixed valence a(3)(2+)-CN·Cu(B)(2+)CN species. The photolysis products of the heme a(3)(2+)-CN(-)/Cu(B)(2+) and heme a(3)(2+)-CN(-)/Cu(B)(1+) species are different suggesting that relaxation dynamics in the binuclear center following ligand photodissociation are dependent on the oxidation state of Cu(B).

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformations represent some of the most fascinating phenomena in chemistry. They are not only intriguing from a basic science point of view but also provide a means to modify or tune the properties of the materials via the postsynthetic introduction of suitable guest molecules or organic functional groups into their structures. Here, we describe UCY-2, a new flexible Nd(3+) metal-organic framework (MOF), which exhibits a unique capability to undergo a plethora of SCSC transformations with some of them being very uncommon. These structural alterations involve the replacement of coordinating solvent molecules of UCY-2 by terminally ligating solvents and organic ligands with multiple functional groups including -OH, -SH, -NH-, and -NH(2) or their combinations, chelating ligands, anions, and two different organic compounds. The SCSC coordinating solvent exchange is thus demonstrated as a powerful method for the functionalization of MOFs.

X-ray studies show that 1,3-diphenyl-7-(thien-2-yl)-1,4-dihydro-1,2,4-benzotriazin-4-yl (6) adopts a distorted, slipped π-stacked structure of centrosymmetric dimers with alternate short and long interplanar distances (3.48 and 3.52 Å). Cyclic voltammograms of 7-(thien-2-yl)benzotriazin-4-yl 6 show two fully reversible waves that correspond to the -1/0 and 0/+1 processes. EPR and DFT studies on radical 6 indicate that the spin density is mainly delocalized over the triazinyl fragment. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that radical 6 obeys Curie-Weiss behavior in the 5-300 K region with C=0.378 emu K mol(-1) and θ=+4.72 K, which is consistent with ferromagnetic interactions between S=1/2 radicals. Fitting the magnetic susceptibility revealed the behavior is consistent with an alternating ferromagnetic chain (g=2.0071, J(1) =+7.12 cm(-1), J(2) =+1.28 cm(-1))., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The initial use of 1,3-propanediol in mixed Mn/3d cluster chemistry has led to a Mn(III)(28)Mn(II)(8)Ni(II)(4) molecular aggregate which consists of two Mn(III)(8)Ni(2) loops and two Mn(III)(6)Mn(II)(4) supertetrahedral units and displays a high ground spin state value S(T) = 26 ± 1.

The dioxygen reduction mechanism in cytochrome oxidases relies on proton control of the electron transfer events that drive the process. Proton delivery and proton channels in the protein that are relevant to substrate reduction and proton pumping are considered, and the current status of this area is summarized. We propose a mechanism in which the coupling of the oxygen reduction chemistry to proton translocation (P→F transition) is related to the properties of two groups of highly conserved residues, namely, His411/G386-T389 and the heme a(3)-propionateA-D399-H403 chain., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. The main objective of this study is the use of polymeric surfactants in polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coatings for the separation of the pharmaceutical substances acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs). AChEIs are used for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease and Myasthenia Gravis. In the open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) mode, the PEM coating is evaluated using nine AChEIs. Optimal conditions are established by altering several experimental parameters such as the pH of the background electrolyte (BGE), the anionic polymer for the PEM coating, the concentration of NaCl, which is used as an additive in the polymer deposition solutions, the number of bilayers, the deposition time, and the concentration of the polymeric surfactant. 25 mM NaH(2)PO(4).H(2)Ο and 25 mM Na(2)HPO(4) at pH 7 is used as BGE. Two bilayers of poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) and poly(sodium N-undecanoyl L-leucinate) provide a baseline separation of all nine analytes in less than 4.5 min. Run-to-run reproducibility studies are also performed, and the relative standard deviation values of the migration times of the nine-analyte peaks are less than 2%. In addition, day-to-day, week-to-week and capillary-to-capillary reproducibilities are evaluated, and the relative standard deviation values of the electroosmotic flow are less than 2%. Finally, using the PEM coating approach, we were able to perform more than 150 runs in the same column. Neither the addition of the polymeric surfactant to the mobile phase, nor the reconstruction of the coating was necessary.

Regioselective nucleophilic addition of bisnucleophiles 1,2-benzenediamine, 2-amino-benzenethiol, and N-phenyl-1,2-benzenediamine to 1,3-diphenylbenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-7(1H)-one (1) at C6 followed by intramolecular cyclocondensation at the C7 carbonyl afforded highly coloured tetracenes 1,3-diphenyl-1,6-dihydro-[1,2,4]triazino[5,6-b]phenazin-4-ium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (12), 1,3-diphenyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazino[6,5-b]phenothiazine (14) and 1,3,11-triphenyl-1,6-dihydro-[1,2,4]triazino[5,6-b]phenazin-11-ium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (15), respectively. Neutralization of the latter with alkali gave the free base 1,3,11-triphenyl-1H-[1,2,4]triazino[5,6-b]phenazin-11-ium-6-ide (16). Furthermore, the benzotriazinone 1 reacts with dimethyl malonate to give 6-(methoxycarbonyl)-7-oxo-1,3-diphenyl-7H-benzofuro[5,6-e][1,2,4]triazin-1-ium-4-ide (17) in 74% yield, while with S(4)N(4) [5,6-c]-thiadiazolo-7-oxo-1,3-diphenyl-1,2,4-benzotriazine (22) was formed in 15% yield. The free bases 16 and 17 display negative solvatochromism, which supports charge separated ground states similar to those of zwitterionic biscyanines, and DFT calculations at the UB3LYP/6-31G(d) level afford ΔE(ST) values of -13.6 and -18.7 kcal mol(-1), respectively that strongly favour the singlet ground state. All ring systems described are new and fully characterized.

Five novel pentanuclear Fe(3+) clusters with the aliphatic amino-alcohol ligands 3-amino-1-propanol (Hap) and 2-(hydroxymethyl)piperidine (Hhmpip) [Fe(5)(μ(3)-Ο)(2)(L)(4)(O(2)CR)(7)] [L = ap(-), R = Ph (1); L = ap(-), R = C(CH(3))(3) (2); L = hmpip(-), R = Ph (3); L = hmpip(-), R = C(CH(3))(3) (4)] and [Fe(5)(μ(4)-Ο)(μ(3)-Ο)(O(2)CC(CH(3))(3))(8)(ap)(2)Cl(HO(2)CC(CH(3))(3))] (5) are reported. Compounds 1-4 were prepared from reactions of preformed trinuclear Fe(3+) clusters with the ligands in a molar ratio 1 : 5 in MeCN (1, 3, 4) or DMF (2), whereas compound 5 was prepared from the reaction of FeCl(3) with Hap in the presence of HO(2)CC(CH(3))(3) in a molar ratio 1 : 3 : 2 in MeCN. To the best of our knowledge, 1-5 are the first examples of Fe(3+) complexes with the ligands Hap and Hhmpip. The structures of 1-4 are composed of a quasi-planar [Fe(5)(μ(3)-O)(2)](11+) core which consists of two vertex-sharing [Fe(3)(μ(3)-O)](7+) triangles. The structure of 5 is based on the [Fe(5)(μ(4)-O)(μ(3)-O)](11+) core, in which the five Fe(3+) ions adopt a monocapped trigonal pyramidal topology. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements on powdered microcrystalline samples of 1 and 5 revealed the existence of antiferromagnetic interactions which led to an S = 5/2 ground state. Mössbauer spectroscopy studies on powdered microcrystalline samples of 1 and 5 confirmed that all iron ions of both complexes are in the Fe(3+) (S = 5/2) state. The variation of the ligand environment in the various iron sites was reflected in their different quadruple splitting parameters. At T < 50 K the Mössbauer spectra indicated the onset of spin relaxation effects in the time scale of the technique (10(-7)-10(-8) s).

The aim of this work is the development, validation and application of an MEKC method for the chiral separation of Huperzine A. Huperzine A is an important compound that is used to treat Alzheimer's disease. However, only the (-)-form of this compound is biologically active and behaves as a potential acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Therefore, the separation of the (-)-form from the (+)-form is of greatest importance. Optimal conditions, regarding resolution and analysis time, were established by altering several experimental parameters, such as temperature, field strength, pH, type and concentration of BGE and chiral selector. A major problem that had to be solved in this study was the low intensity and efficiency of the peaks. More parameters were examined, such as the addition of modifiers, to optimize further the separation, and particularly the efficiency. Baseline enantioseparation was achieved by using a BGE of 50 mM acetate (pH 5.0), supplemented with 0.2% w/v poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-ll-alanyl-valinate) and 10% v/v tert-butanol. Finally, the optimum conditions were applied to a pharmaceutical formulation, to demonstrate the ability of the method to control the purity of the (-)-Huperzine A in pharmaceutical formulations., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A capillary zone electrophoresis-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (CZE-ESI-MS) method was developed for the analysis of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor rivastigmine. Several electrophoretic and ESI-MS parameters were investigated in order to improve sensitivity. These parameters were categorized in three areas: (i) background electrolyte (BGE) parameters, (ii) sheath liquid parameters, and (iii) spray chamber parameters. The optimized results were obtained by using 40-mM ammonium acetate at pH 9 as BGE, a sheath liquid of 1% acetic acid in water:MeOH (50:50 v/v) at a flow rate of 10 μL/min, and a drying gas flow rate that was set at 6 L/min and at a temperature of 200°C. These parameters provided limit of detection and limit of quantitation of 2.8 ng/mL and 8.4 ng/mL, respectively. The optimal CZE-ESI-MS conditions were applied to a plasma sample obtained from an Alzheimer's disease patient following rivastigmine patch administration, and the mean (±standard deviation) plasma concentration was estimated to be 14.6 (±1.7) ng/mL. Several sample preparation procedures were examined, and solid-phase extraction using a C18 cartridge proved to be the most effective procedure, since higher sensitivity and recovery were obtained. The Bingel functionalisation of C(60) with a structurally novel tether equipped with three reactive malonate groups afforded a C(2v)-symmetrical e(edge),e(face),trans-1 trisadduct in a complete regioselective manner and in an excellent yield of 65%. The initial use of a novel elongated tricarboxylic acid H(3)hmpib in metal-organic framework (MOF) chemistry resulted in a [Zn(4)O(hmpib)(2)] MOF (UCY-1) with pyrite topology. The compound displays a remarkably high internal surface area despite its double-interpenetrated structure as well as high CO(2) uptake and selective adsorption for it over CH(4).

We examine computationally the dipeptide and tetrapeptide of alanine in pure water and solutions of sodium chloride (NaCl) and iodide (NaI), with salt concentrations up to 3 M. Enhanced sampling of the configuration space is achieved by the replica exchange method. In agreement with other works, we observe preferential sodium interactions with the peptide carbonyl groups, which are enhanced in the NaI solutions due to the increased affinity of the less hydrophilic iodide anion for the peptide methyl side-chains and terminal blocking groups. These interactions have been associated with a decrease in the helicities of more complex peptides. In our simulations, both salts have a small effect on the dipeptide, but consistently stabilize the intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions and "α-helical" conformations of the tetrapeptide. This behavior, and an analysis of the intermolecular interaction energies show that ion-peptide interactions, or changes in the peptide hydration due to salts, are not sufficient determining factors of the peptide conformational preferences. Additional simulations suggest that the observed stabilizing effect is not due to the employed force-field, and that it is maintained in short peptides but is reversed in longer peptides. Thus, the peptide conformational preferences are determined by an interplay of energetic and entropic factors, arising from the peptide sequence and length and the composition of the solution.

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, "light" minus "dark" difference FTIR spectra, and time-resolved step-scan (TRS(2)) FTIR spectra are reported for carbonmonoxy aldoxime dehydratase. Two C-O modes of heme at 1945 and 1964 cm(-1) have been identified and remained unchanged in H(2)O/D(2)O exchange and in the pH 5.6-8.5 range, suggesting the presence of two conformations at the active site. The observed C-O frequencies are 5 and 16 cm(-1) lower and higher, respectively, than that obtained previously (Oinuma, K.-I.; et al. FEBS Lett.2004, 568, 44-48). We suggest that the strength of the Fe-His bond and the neutralization of the negatively charged propionate groups modulate the ν(Fe-CO)/ν(CO) back-bonding correlation. The "light" minus "dark" difference FTIR spectra indicate that the heme propionates are in both the protonated and deprotonated forms, and the photolyzed CO becomes trapped within a ligand docking site (ν(CO) = 2138 cm(-1)). The TRS(2)-FTIR spectra show that the rate of recombination of CO to the heme is k(1945 cm(-1)) = 126 ± 20 s(-1) and k(1964 cm(-1)) = 122 ± 20 s(-1) at pH 5.6, and k(1945 cm(-1)) = 148 ± 30 s(-1) and k(1964 cm(-1)) = 158 ± 32 s(-1) at pH 8.5. The rate of decay of the heme propionate vibrations is on a time scale coincident with the rate of rebinding, suggesting that there is a coupling between ligation dynamics in the distal heme environment and the environment sensed by the heme propionates. The implications of these results with respect to the proximal His-Fe heme environment including the propionates and the positively charged or proton-donating residues in the distal pocket which are crucial for the synthesis of nitriles are discussed.

A series of 3-chloro-5-halo(pseudohalo)-4H-1,2,6-thiadiazin-4-ones (halo/pseudohalo = Br, I, OTf) are prepared from 3,5-dichloro-4H-1,2,6-thiadiazin-4-one (3) in good yields. Of these the triflate reacts with tributyltin arenes (Stille couplings) chemoselectively to give only the 5-aryl-3-chloro-4H-1,2,6-thiadiazin-4-ones in high yields. This allowed the preparation of a series of unsymmetrical biaryl thiadiazines and ultimately a series of oligomers. Furthermore, treatment of 3-chloro-5-iodo-4H-1,2,6-thiadiazin-4-one (10) with Bu(3)SnH and Pd(OAc)(2) gave the bithiadiazinone which can also be further arylated via the Stille reaction to give bisthien-2-yl and bis(N-methylpyrrol-2-yl) analogs., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

Resonance Raman (RR) and "light" minus "dark" Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) difference spectra are reported for the CO-bound caa(3) oxidase from Thermus thermophilus. Two Fe-CO stretching modes at 518 and 507 cm(-1), the Fe-C-O bending mode at 570 cm(-1), and three C-O modes of heme a(3) at 1958, 1967, and 1973 cm(-1) have been identified in the RR and FTIR spectra, respectively. The FTIR "light" minus "dark" spectrum indicates the formation of Cu(B)CO as revealed by its ν(CO) at 2060/2065 cm(-1). We assign the bands at 518 (ν(Fe-CO)) and 1967/1973 cm(-1) (ν(C-O)) as the α-conformation. We also assign the bands at 507 and 1958 cm(-1) (ν(C-O)) as originating from the β-conformation of the enzyme. A frequency upshift of the heme a(3) Fe-His mode is observed subsequent to CO photolysis from 209 cm(-1) in the equilibrium deoxy enzyme to 214 cm(-1) in the photoproduct. The caa(3) data, distinctly different from those of ba(3) oxidase, are discussed in terms of the coupling of the α- and β-conformations that occur in heme-copper oxidases with catalytic function. 1,3-Diphenylbenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-7(1H)-one (6) reacts with tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) or tetracyanoethylene oxide (TCNEO) to give the deep green 2-[1,3-diphenylbenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-7(1H)-ylidene]propanedinitrile (11) in 17 and 15% yields, respectively. Nucleophiles such as amines, alkoxides, thiols and Grignard reagents all reacted with the 1,3-diphenylbenzotriazinone 6 regioselectively at C-6, while halogenating agents reacted exclusively at C-8. Furthermore, 8-iodo-1,3-diphenylbenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-7(1H)-one (32) undergoes palladium-catalysed Suzuki-Miyaura and Stille coupling reactions to give 8-aryl- or heteroaryl-substituted benzotriazinones. By combining both the C-6 and C-8 chemistries 1,3,6,8-tetraphenylbenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-7(1H)-one (42) and 1,3-diphenyl-6,8-di(thien-2-yl)-benzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-7(1H)-one (43) can be prepared. All new compounds are fully characterized.

Silver(I) fluoride (AgF)-mediated intramolecular nonoxidative and oxidative palladium-catalyzed cyclizations of 1,3-diphenyl- and 8-iodo-1,3-diphenylbenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-7(1H)-ones 6a (R = H) and 7a (R = I) afford a new 'alkaloid like' ring system 2-phenyl-6H-[1,2,4]triazino[5,6,1-jk]carbazol-6-one 8a (triazafluoranthenone) in 86 and 100% yields, respectively. Furthermore, these cyclization protocols were used to prepare triazafluoranthenone analogues 8b-e bearing dialkylamino, methoxy, and phenylsulfanyl substituents at C-5, which were also independently synthesized from triazafluoranthenone 8a by regioselective nucleophilic addition. Similar AgF-mediated intramolecular nonoxidative and oxidative palladium-catalyzed cyclizations of 8,10-dihydro-1-iodo-10-phenylphenazin-2(7H)-ones 13 gave the new 'alkaloid like' ring system 8H-indolo[1,2,3-mn]phenazin-8-one 14 in 80 and 18% yields, respectively.

Palladium catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura, Stille, and Sonogashira coupling reactions are reported for the electron-deficient heterocyclic scaffold 3,5-dichloro-4H-1,2,6-thiadiazin-4-one (1). Furthermore, 3,5-di(thien-2-yl)-4H-1,2,6-thiadiazin-4-one (7m) is further elaborated to afford the tetrathienyl 3,5-bis[(2,2'-bithien)-5-yl]-4H-1,2,6-thiadiazin-4-one (9). All compounds are fully characterized.
