252. Optimizing resource use efficiencies in the food–energy–water nexus for sustainable agriculture: from conceptual model to decision support system

Abstract

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Increased natural and anthropogenic stresses have threatened the Earth's ability to meet growing human demands of food, energy and water (FEW) in a sustainable way. Although much progress has been made in the provision of individual component of FEW, it remains unknown whether there is an optimized strategy to balance the FEW nexus as a whole, reduce air and water pollution, and mitigate climate change on national and global scales. Increasing FEW conflicts in the agroecosystems make it an urgent need to improve our understanding and quantification of how to balance resource investment and enhance resource use efficiencies in the FEW nexus. Therefore, we propose an integrated modeling system of the FEW nexus by coupling an ecosystem model, an economic model, and a regional climate model, aiming to mimic the interactions and feedbacks within the ecosystem–human–climate systems. The trade-offs between FEW benefit and economic cost in excess resource usage, environmental degradation, and climate consequences will be quantitatively assessed, which will serve as sustainability indicators for agricultural systems (including crop production, livestock and aquaculture). We anticipate that the development and implementation of such an integrated modeling platform across world's regions could build capabilities in understanding the agriculture-centered FEW nexus and guiding policy and land management decision making for a sustainable future.

Abstract

The transitional nucleus 131Xe is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) in the 136Xe+208Pb and 136Xe+238U reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy and as an elusive reaction product in the fusion-evaporation reaction 124Sn(11B,p3n) 131Xe employing the HORUS γ-ray array coupled to a double-sided silicon strip detector (DSSSD) at the University of Cologne, Germany. The level scheme of 131Xe is extended to 5 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at ~ω ≈ 0.4 MeV along the negative-parity one-quasiparticle νh11/2(α = −1/2) band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z = 54 isotopes and the N = 77 isotones. Large-scale shell-model calculations (LSSM) employing the PQM130, SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. Further calculations in 129−132Xe provide insight into the changing nuclear structure along the Xe chain towards the N = 82 shell closure. Proton occupancy in the π 0h11/2 orbital is found to be decisive for the description of the observed backbending phenomenon.

Abstract

The phonon Boltzmann transport equation with the frequency-dependent model is solved numerically to study the thermal conductivity in nanoporous thin film and nanocomposite. Local angle between heat fluxes, defined as the angle between the directions of heat flux component qx and the local heat flux q, is introduced. At a fixed porosity or interface area, the thermal conductivity, local angle distribution, and the average angle of the two-dimensional nanoporous thin films with circular, hexagonal, square, and triangular pores are reported, and the thermal conductivity decreases with the increase in the interface area or porosity. Furthermore, the relationship between the thermal conductivity and average angle is also discussed for the three-dimensional nanoporous thin films with aligned or staggered pores, and silicon-germanium embedded and compacted nanocomposites. All the results show that the nanostructured material with a larger average angle between heat fluxes has a lower thermal conductivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper both narrowly and widely replicates the results of Anundsen et al. (Journal of Applied Econometrics, 2016, 31(7), 1291–1311). I am able to reproduce the same results as theirs. Furthermore, I find that allowing for time‐varying parameters of early warning system models can considerably improve the in‐sample model fit and out‐of‐sample forecasting performance based on an expanding window forecasting exercise.

Abstract

A controlled ecological life-support system (CELSS) is required to sustain life for long-duration space missions. The challenge is preparing a wide variety of tasty, familiar, and nutritious foods from CELSS candidate crops under space environmental conditions. Conventional food processing technologies will have to be modified to adapt to the space environment. Extrusion is one of the processes being examined as a means of converting raw plant biomass into familiar foods. A nutrition-improved pasta has been developed using cowpea as a replacement for a portion of the durum semolina. A freeze-drying system that simulates the space conditions has also been developed. Other technologies that would fulfill the requirements of a CELSS will also be addressed.

Abstract

The thin-layer drying performance for a typical solid waste (paper towel) was evaluated at hot air temperatures of 90–130 °C (0.5 m/s air velocity) and microwave powers of 200–800 W in a bench-scale microwave combined convective drying setup. Influences of hot air and radiation modes (multi-magnetron and mode stirrer) on the temperature distribution uniformity were examined. The effective moisture diffusivities of sample during pure hot air drying ranged from 6.07 × 10−9 to 1.31 × 10−8 m2/s, while those for pure microwave drying were from 3.54 × 10−8 to 1.52 × 10−7 m2/s. The apparent activation energy of sample in pure hot air drying was estimated as 23.17 kJ/mol, while that for pure microwave drying was 22.64 W/g. The effective moisture diffusivities of sample in combined drying ranged from 5.71 × 10−8 to 2.05 × 10−7 m2/s. The heating uniformity for microwave was improved effectively by the combined drying. The application of the mode stirrers and multi-magnetron radiation modes further improved the microwave heating uniformity. Midilli model can well describe moisture content of paper towel over time. Abstract

© 1963-2012 IEEE. A planar millimeter-wave 2-D beam-scanning multibeam array antenna fed by compact 16-way beam-forming network (BFN) in multilayered substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology is addressed. The BFN is formed by connecting two stacks of sub-BFNs, the E-plane sub-BFN and the H-plane sub-BFN. The H-plane sub-BFN is realized by a traditional H-plane 4 × 4 Butler matrix (BM). The key point of this design is to propose an E-plane 4 × 4 BM which realizes a planar E-plane sub-BFN. These two sets of sub-BFNs can joint directly without resorting to any connectors or connecting networks to form such a compact 16-way BFN with a reduced area of merely 3λ × 12λ . After that, to be compatible with the proposed BFN, a ladder-type 4 × 4 slot antenna array is employed, which is comprised of four linear 1 × 4 slot antenna arrays. Different from traditional array, the four subarrays are distributed in separate layers for the purpose of jointing to the BFN more conveniently. Transition network are also required to connect the BFN with the antenna array. Finally, a compact 2-D scanning multibeam array antenna based on the planar SIW BFN are fabricated and measured, which would be an attractive candidate for 5G application.

Abstract

We aimed to evaluate the relationship between baseline renal function and changes in telomere length in Han Chinese. The telomere restriction fragment (TRF) length of leukocytes in the peripheral blood was measured in healthy volunteers recruited in 2014. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated based on serum creatinine (Scr) and serum cystatin C (CysC)-eGFRcys and eGFRScr-cys through the Cockcroft-Gault formula (eGFRC-G) or the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI / eGFRCKD-EPI) equation. The correlation between telomere length changes over time and renal function was analyzed. Leukocyte TRF lengths were negatively correlated to age (r = -0.393, p < 0.001) and serum CysC (r = -0.180, p < 0.01), while positively associated with eGFRCKD-EPI, eGFRC-G, eGFRcys, and eGFRScr-cys (r = 0.182, 0.122, 0.290, and 0.254 respectively, p < 0.01). The 3-year change of telomere length was 46 bp/years. When adjusted for age, the associations between telomere length changes and baseline, subsequent TRF lengths, and serum CysC were no longer present. No association was observed between TRF length changes and renal function. The rate of telomere length changes was affected by age and baseline telomere length. The telomere length changes might be important markers for aging.

Abstract

International audience; The transitional nucleus Xe131 is investigated after multinucleon transfer in the Xe136+Pb208 and Xe136+U238 reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced γ-Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and as an elusive reaction product in the fusion-evaporation reaction Sn124(B11,p3n)Xe131 employing the High-efficiency Observatory for γ-Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) γ-ray array coupled to a double-sided silicon strip detector at the University of Cologne, Germany. The level scheme of Xe131 is extended to 5 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at ℏω≈0.4MeV along the negative-parity one-quasiparticle νh11/2(α=−1/2) band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 isotopes and the N=77 isotones. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the PQM130, SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH, and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. Further calculations in Xe129−132 provide insight into the changing nuclear structure along the Xe chain towards the N=82 shell closure. Proton occupancy in the π0h11/2 orbital is found to be decisive for the description of the observed backbending phenomenon.

Many present technologies can be adapted to meet space conditions.

© 2017 American Physical Society. Lifetimes of excited states in the neutron-deficient nucleus Zn61 were measured employing the recoil-distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) and the electronic fast-timing methods at the University of Cologne. The nucleus of interest was populated as an evaporation residue in Ca40(Mg24,n2p)Zn61 and Ni58(α,n)Zn61 reactions at 67 and 19 MeV, respectively. Five lifetimes were measured for the first time, including the lifetime of the 5/21- isomer at 124 keV. Short lifetimes from the RDDS analysis are corrected for Doppler-shift attenuation (DSA) in the target and stopper foils. Ambiguous observations in previous measurements were resolved. The obtained lifetimes are compared to predictions from different sets of shell-model calculations in the fp, f5/2pg9/2, and multishell fp-g9/2d5/2 model spaces. The band built on the 9/21+ state exhibits a prolate deformation with β≈0.24. Especially, the inclusion of cross-shell excitation into the 1d5/2 orbital is found to be decisive for the description of collectivity in the first excited positive-parity band. ispartof: Physical Review C vol:96 issue:4 status: published

Abstract

Distortions in truss structures can result from random errors in elemental lengths that are typical of a manufacturing process. These distortions may be minimized by an optimal selection of elements from those available for placement between the prescribed nodes -- a combinatorial optimization problem requiring significant investment of computational resource for all but the smallest problems. The present paper describes a formulation in which near-optimal element assignments are obtained as minimum energy, stable states, of an analogous Hopfield neural network. This requires mapping of the optimization problem into an energy function of the appropriate Lyapunov form. The computational architecture is ideally suited to a parallel processor implementation and offers significant savings in computational effort. A numerical implementation of the approach is discussed with reference to planar truss problems.

Abstract

The present paper discusses the applicability of ART (Adaptive Resonance Theory) networks, and the Hopfield and Elastic networks, in problems of structural analysis and design. A characteristic of these network architectures is the ability to classify patterns presented as inputs into specific categories. The categories may themselves represent distinct procedural solution strategies. The paper shows how this property can be adapted in the structural analysis and design problem. A second application is the use of Hopfield and Elastic networks in optimization problems. Of particular interest are problems characterized by the presence of discrete and integer design variables. The parallel computing architecture that is typical of neural networks is shown to be effective in such problems. Results of preliminary implementations in structural design problems are also included in the paper.

Abstract

Controlling the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials continues to be a goal for energy conversion applications. The Phonon Boltzmann Transport Equation is solved by using the Discrete Ordinates Method to numerically study the phonon thermal conductivity of nano-structured silicon thin film with pores in this study. The effects of the film thickness, film porosity, and porous structure are concerned. The numerical results show that the nano-pores are able to reduce the thermal conductivity of the silicon thin film sharply by the phonon boundary scattering, and the scattering boundary area has significant effect on the thermal conductivity. The method of local angle distribution between heat fluxes is introduced for the first time to optimize the pore placement for reducing the thermal conductivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The microwave drying performance of spent coffee grounds (SCG) briquette in a bench-scale setup was evaluated in terms of the influences of power levels (119–700 W) and three mineral additives (10% sodium chloride, 10% sodium sulfate and 10% lignite). During the drying process, a short warm-up period, a first and a second falling rate period were detected. Compared with raw SCG briquette, the required drying times of SCG with Na2SO4 and NaCl additives at 385 W decreased by 38% and 18%, respectively, while the drying time increased by 9% with the addition of the fine lignite. The effective moisture diffusivities of raw SCG in the first falling rate period were 7.89 × 10−9 to 1.75 × 10−8 m2 s−1, while that in the second falling rate period were 1.09 × 10−9 to 1.81 × 10−8 m2 s−1. The average activation energy of raw SCG in the falling rate period was 24.43 W g−1. The apparent activation energy in the falling rate periods for SCG/sodium carbonate and SCG/sodium chloride was less than that of the raw SCG, which indicated that sodium chloride and sodium sulfate could improve the microwave drying performance of SCG briquette. Abstract

A linear non-equilibrium thermodynamics (LNT) microwave-multiphase transport model was developed in order to describe the microwave drying behavior of lignite and hematite thin layer. The moisture ratio profiles and temperature distribution derived in terms of dielectric and coupled dielectric and magnetic loss mechanisms fitted the experimental results well with reasonable deviations. The electric and magnetic field intensities of the corner and edge in the samples were higher than that of the center regions, which met with the experimental temperature distribution. No pumping phenomenon was detected during the whole drying process. The heat flux driven by the polarization relaxation at the higher electric and magnetic field intensities (103–5 × 103 V m−1, 4–7 A m−1) regions was higher than that at the lower ones (2 × 102–2 × 103 V m−1, 1–4 A m−1), and the electric-thermal effects also decreased with the increasing of the sample temperature and the decreasing of the moisture content in the sample. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The anti-inflammatory effect of Sirtuin 1 (Sirt1) during intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) has been widely confirmed. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) activation is the initiating inflammatory response associated with the IDD. However, whether Sirt1 suppresses MCP-1 in the intervertebral disc is unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The MCP-1 and Sirt1 protein expression in the degenerated and non-degenerated NP tissues were compared by immunohistochemistry (IHC). We induced nucleus pulposus (NP) cell degeneration by IL-1β and mediated cellular Sirt1 expression through the Sirt1 activator resveratrol (Res) or inhibitor Nicotinamide (Nico). In addition, the inhibitors of MCP-1 and Activator protein 1 (AP-1) were also used in cell culture. The function of NP cells was determined by the type II collagen and Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. We assessed the Sirt1 and MCP-1 expression by the Reverse Transcription-quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR). The AP-1 activity was valued by the phosphorylation of its components c-Fos, and c-Jun. RESULTS: Both in vivo and in vitro experimental results indicated that MCP-1 was upregulated in the degenerated condition, which was opposite to Sirt1 expression. Res suppressed AP-1, the phosphorylation of c-Fos/c-Jun, and the MCP-1 expression. On the contrary, Sirt1 downregulation by Nico aggravated the phosphorylation of c-Fos/c-Jun and MCP-1 expression. However, the MCP-1 suppression did not affect the Sirt1 and AP-1 levels. The destruction of AP-1 activation also inhibited MCP-1 expression but not Sirt1. The upregulation of Sirt1 and suppression of MCP-1 improved the type II collagen expression and cell viability, which was injured by IL-1β. CONCLUSIONS: Sirt1 suppresses the MCP-1 production in the degenerated NP cells by suppressing the phosphorylation of the AP-1 subunits c-Fos and c-Jun. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
