253. Atomic-waveguide quantum electrodynamics

Abstract

Atom arrays are a new type of quantum light-matter interface. Here, we propose to employ one-dimensional ordered arrays as atomic waveguides. These arrays support optical guided modes that do not decay into free space. We show that these modes can be harnessed to mediate tunable, long-range interactions between additional "impurity qubits" coupled to the chain, without need for photonic structures. The efficient coupling between qubits and atomic waveguides enables the realization of tunable qubit-qubit interactions, which can be short- or long-range, dissipative or coherent, as well as chiral. Moreover, owing to the two-level nature of atoms, these waveguides are intrinsically quantum. In contrast to classical waveguides, where photons do not interact with each other, atomic waveguides display strong non-linearities, which create a tunable dissipative channel for qubit-qubit interactions, and opens the door to the exploration of many-body physics between guided photons. This physics is universal as it only relies on photon interference and can also be observed with other types of quantum emitters, such as those in molecular or solid-state systems., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. 254. Circulo Domoche: Making Memory and Doing Methodology as We Go

Abstract

In this article, we reflect on a research method we called Circulo Domoche, part of a larger research project on the histories of schooling of Mapuche women in Chile in a context of continual violence against Indigenous people. It originates in the personal experience of the researchers with Chilean schooling and our academic work on education. We share our process of methodological exploration for studying the stories of schooling of Mapuche women from multiple generations. The three authors, along with four others, met periodically and wrote each other letters to talk about our memories of schooling to explore ways of doing research that does not reproduce epistemicide and exploitation of Indigenous people through research. Building on theoretical perspectives from Indigenous scholars and scholars of colour we developed a way of making memory while doing research together. We propose thinking of methodology as not structured beforehand but one that grows along with and as the research unfolds. We share here this community construction as resistance to necropolitics as well as what we have learned by creating spaces of refusal within an academy that functions in a different logic of neoliberal regulation of the construction of knowledge.

255. Knowledges from the South: Reflections on Writing Academically

Abstract

In this paper, we dialogue about the processes of knowledge construction that work through and disrupt academic regulations. As feminist, Indigenous, and non-Indigenous Latinx scholars, we build on the reflections stemming from our research of Mapuche women's biographies of schooling. We focus on three tensions of knowledge production within and beyond academic spaces. First, we explore how the knowledges (in plural) that come from our biographies are systematically left out of academic conversations and moved into what we call invisible zones. Second, we examine the work of translation and translanguaging as we move across language barriers and geographic places in our research, which points to what these processes afford across geographic and conceptual zones of "north" and "south." Thirdly, we unsettle the naturalized understanding of knowledge as solely a product of academic spaces and gesture toward a future in which we can reimagine and display complex and complicated ways of doing research otherwise.

Abstract

The title of this dissertation —Edward Hopper beyond the commonplace— alludes to the fact that, although the work of Edward Hopper is widely acknowledged in the history of the twentieth century art, critical literature focused on it has resorted to a number of labels (Americanness, alienation, loneliness and the like) which, over time, have become clichés with very little critical insight and with very weak theoretical and visual foundations. My first aim is, therefore, to develop a different critical framework which is up to the task of analysing the indisputable visual relevance of Hopper’s work. I shall argue that this critical support can be found in Walter Benjamin’s concept of “poverty of experience”, which I shall re-examine in the Part I of the dissertation. But my main aim is to test this framework in the analysis of Hopper’s oeuvre, and to show that not only the notion of poverty of experience can enrich this analysis, but also Hopper’s works can enrich the concept coined by Benjamin. So, in the rest of the dissertation, besides reviewing the existing literature, I shall construct an interpretative hypothesis to account for the interactions between technology and tradition underlying the development of American painting (Part II), the complex relationship between painting and technological reproducibility in Hopper’s artistic project (Part III), and the emotional meaning of Hopper’s pictures (part IV). I hope that this critical approach improves the understanding of Hopper’s work and can be useful to a wider treatment of modern art history.

290. A morphological study of galaxies in ZwCl0024+1652, a galaxy cluster at redshift z $\sim$ 0.4

Abstract

The well-known cluster of galaxies ZwCl0024+1652 at z $\sim$ 0.4, lacks an in-depth morphological classification of its central region. While previous studies provide a visual classification of a patched area, we used the public code called galaxy Support Vector Machine (galSVM) and HST/ACS data as well as WFP2 master catalogue to automatically classify all cluster members up to 1 Mpc. galSVM analyses galaxy morphologies through Support Vector Machine (SVM). From the 231 cluster galaxies, we classified 97 as early-types (ET) and 83 as late-types (LT). The remaining 51 stayed unclassified (or undecided, UD). By cross-matching our results with the existing visual classification, we found an agreement of 81%. In addition to previous Zwcl0024 morphological classifications, 121 of our galaxies were classified for the first time in this work. In addition, we tested the location of classified galaxies on the standard morphological diagrams, colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams. Out of all cluster members, $\sim$20% are emission line galaxies (ELG), taking into account previous GLACE results. We have verified that the ET fraction is slightly higher near the cluster core and decreases with the clustercentric distance, while the opposite trend has been observed for LT galaxies. We found higher fraction of ET (54%) than LT (46%) throughout the analysed central region, as expected. In addition, we analysed the correlation between the five morphological parameters (Abraham concentration, Bershady-Concelice concentration, Asymmetry, Gini and M20 moment of light) and clustercentric distance, without finding a clear trend. Finally, as a result of our work, the morphological catalogue of 231 galaxies containing all the measured parameters and the final classification is available in the electronic form of this paper., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS main journal, 20 pages, 14 figures
