Thermodynamic properties of strongly interacting matter are investigated using the Polyakov loop enhanced Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model along with some modifications to include the hadrons. Various observables are shown to have a close agreement with the numerical data of QCD on lattice. The advantage of the present scheme over a similar study using a switching function is that here no extra parameters are to be fitted. Serverless computing has gained a significant traction in recent times because of its simplicity of development, deployment and fine-grained billing. However, while implementing complex services comprising databases, file stores, or more than one serverless function, the performance in terms of latency of serving requests often degrades severely. In this work, we analyze different serverless architectures with AWS Lambda services and compare their performance in terms of latency with a traditional virtual machine (VM) based approach. We observe that database access latency in serverless architecture is almost 14 times than that in VM based setup. Further, we introduce some caching strategies which can improve the response time significantly, and compare their performance.

We discuss systematic uncertainties in the chemical freeze-out parameters from the $\chi^2$ analysis of hadron multiplicity ratios in the heavy-ion collision experiments. The systematics due to the choice of specific hadron ratios are found to lie within the experimental uncertainties. The variations obtained by removing the usual constraints on the conserved charges show similar behavior. The net charge to net baryon ratios in such unconstrained systems are commensurate with the expected value obtained from the protons and neutrons of the colliding nuclei up to the center of mass energies $\sim 40$ GeV. Beyond that the uncertainties in this ratio gradually increases, possibly indicating the reduction in baryon stopping.

Data augmentation (DA) turns seemingly intractable computational problems into simple ones by augmenting latent missing data. In addition to computational simplicity, it is now well-established that DA equipped with a deterministic transformation can improve the convergence speed of iterative algorithms such as an EM algorithm or Gibbs sampler. In this article, we outline a framework for the transformation-based DA, which we call data transforming augmentation (DTA), allowing augmented data to be a deterministic function of latent and observed data, and unknown parameters. Under this framework, we investigate a novel DTA scheme that turns heteroscedastic models into homoscedastic ones to take advantage of simpler computations typically available in homoscedastic cases. Applying this DTA scheme to fitting linear mixed models, we demonstrate simpler computations and faster convergence rates of resulting iterative algorithms, compared with those under a non-transformation-based DA scheme. We also fit a Beta-Binomial model using the proposed DTA scheme, which enables sampling approximate marginal posterior distributions that are available only under homoscedasticity. Inferring unknown conic sections on the basis of noisy data is a challenging problem with applications in computer vision. A major limitation of the currently available methods for conic sections is that estimation methods rely on the underlying shape of the conics (being known to be ellipse, parabola or hyperbola). A general purpose Bayesian hierarchical model is proposed for conic sections and corresponding estimation method based on noisy data is shown to work even when the specific nature of the conic section is unknown. The model, thus, provides probabilistic detection of the underlying conic section and inference about the associated parameters of the conic section. Through extensive simulation studies where the true conics may not be known, the methodology is demonstrated to have practical and methodological advantages relative to many existing techniques. In addition, the proposed method provides probabilistic measures of uncertainty of the estimated parameters. Furthermore, we observe high fidelity to the true conics even in challenging situations, such as data arising from partial conics in arbitrarily rotated and non-standard form, and where a visual inspection is unable to correctly identify the type of conic section underlying the data.

Trees are the main sources of paper production, in most of the cases, as far as the intellectual usages are concerned. However, our planet is lacking in that particular natural resource due to rapid growth of population, urbanization, and increased pollution, more importantly non-judicial utilization of such kind. Indian education sectors (schools, colleges, universities) utilize a major part in consumption of papers as a classical practice for conducting examinations and other documentation activities. Our attempt in this article is to investigate and provide an optimal estimate of the number of pages actually required in answer booklet in higher education sector. Truncated Poisson distribution is found to be the best fit for the data on number of pages left blank in an answer booklet after conduction of semester end examinations. To predict the outcome based on various factors such as, lines per pages, words per line, types of examinations etc. suitable regression modeling is performed. The proportional hazards (PH), proportional odds (PO) and accelerated failure time (AFT) models have been widely used in different applications of survival analysis. Despite their popularity, these models are not suitable to handle lifetime data with crossing survival curves. In 2005, Yang and Prentice proposed a semiparametric two-sample strategy (YP model), including the PH and PO frameworks as particular cases, to deal with this type of data. Assuming a general regression setting, the present paper proposes an unified approach to fit the YP model by employing Bernstein polynomials to manage the baseline hazard and odds under both the frequentist and Bayesian frameworks. The use of the Bernstein polynomials has some advantages: it allows for uniform approximation of the baseline distribution, it leads to closed-form expressions for all baseline functions, it simplifies the inference procedure, and the presence of a continuous survival function allows a more accurate estimation of the crossing survival time. Extensive simulation studies are carried out to evaluate the behavior of the models. The analysis of a clinical trial data set, related to non-small-cell lung cancer, is also developed as an illustration. Our findings indicate that assuming the usual PH model, ignoring the existing crossing survival feature in the real data, is a serious mistake with implications for those patients in the initial stage of treatment.

In this report, we have explored the issues associated with the specification of event-based systems in a mobile environment using Unity \cite{unity}. We used a few constructs and concepts from Mobile UNITY which was proposed as an extension of UNITY by Roman and McCann \cite{intro}. Our aim in this report is to show that some of the constructs proposed in Mobile UNITY are not unnecessary. Those constructs are overly powerful and put a hindrance on the mapping from UNITY specification to particular architectures, which is one of the key simplicity of UNITY specification. Using an example of a message-based event notification system we have shown that a system with a simple modification to the structure of assign section of the UNITY programs could serve well in mapping and implementation at the same time preserve the small and compact proof logic of UNITY., Comment: 8 pages

A Brownian particle floating in a narrow corrugated (sinusoidal) channel with fluctuating cross section exhibits non-Gaussian normal diffusion. Its displacements are distributed according to a Gaussian law for very short and asymptotically large observation times, whereas a robust exponential distribution emerges for intermediate observation times of the order of the channel fluctuation correlation time. For intermediate to large observation times the particle undergoes normal diffusion with one and the same effective diffusion constant. These results are analytically interpreted without having recourse to heuristic assumptions. Such a simple model thus reproduces recent experimental and numerical observations obtained by investigating complex biophysical systems.

A novel image processing technique based on convolution is developed for analyzing the etch-pit images in Nuclear Track Detectors (NTDs). The outcomes of the application of the proposed method on the different types of NTDs (e.g., CR-39, PET) containing etch-pit openings of different sizes and shapes (circular and elliptical) is presented. Promising results have been obtained for both identifying and counting the etch-pits in NTDs.

We consider an investor, whose portfolio consists of a single risky asset and a risk free asset, who wants to maximize his expected utility of the portfolio subject to managing the Value at Risk (VaR) assuming a heavy tailed distribution of the stock prices return. We use a stochastic maximum principle to formulate the dynamic optimisation problem. The equations which we obtain does not have any explicit analytical solution, so we look for accurate approximations to estimate the value function and optimal strategy. As our calibration strategy is non-parametric in nature, no prior knowledge on the form of the distribution function is needed. We also provide detailed empirical illustration using real life data. The Raman spectroscopy and AC and DC magnetization of Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ have been investigated. In Raman Spectroscopy, the systematic shift in all phonon modes with Eu content in Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ confirms that Dy$^{3+}$ ion is substituted by Eu3+ ions. High concentration of Eu induces the dipolar exchange interactions and crystal-field interactions in Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Rich Eu content samples (x=1.8 and 1.9) show the existence of wasp-waisted hysteresis loop and that can be attributed to the coexistence of dipolar field and anisotropy exchange interaction. AC susceptibility shows two single ion spin freezing transitions corresponding to Dy$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ ions respectively in x = 1.5, 1.8, 1.9 samples., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

The application of machine learning principles in the photometric search of elusive astronomical objects has been a less-explored frontier of research. Here we have used three methods: the Neural Network and two variants of k-Nearest Neighbour, to identify brown dwarf candidates using the photometric colours of known brown dwarfs. We initially check the efficiencies of these three classification techniques, both individually and collectively, on known objects. This is followed by their application to three regions in the sky, namely Hercules (2 deg x 2 deg), Serpens (9 deg x 4 deg) and Lyra (2 deg x 2 deg). Testing these algorithms on sets of objects that include known brown dwarfs shows a high level of completeness. This includes the Hercules and Serpens regions where brown dwarfs have been detected. We use these methods to search and identify brown dwarf candidates towards the Lyra region. We infer that the collective method of classification, also known as ensemble classifier, is highly efficient in the identification of brown dwarf candidates., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Magnetoelectric multiferroic composite of two types of multiferroic (Type I and II) consisting BiFeO3 and TbMnO3 is studied for enhanced magnetic and transport properties. A narrower band gap is estimated from the UV-visible absorption spectrum from that of BiFeO3 and TbMnO3. With known value of band gap, the band structure was estimated from the valence band x-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) and ultra violet photoemission spectra (UPS). The valence and conduction band was found at 1.0 eV and 0.45 eV above and below the Fermi level respectively. Thus the insulating behavior of the system is understood from the reconstruction of the energy bands at the interface which happens due to lattice mismatch of the two materials. The large coercivity and the increase on the magnetization value are understood to be due to superexchange interaction between different Mn ions (Mn2+, Mn3+ and Mn4+). From the composition study of EDXA and core level x-ray photoemission spectra oxygen vacancy was found which in turn creates the mixed valence state of Mn to maintain the charge neutrality., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures
