Abstract

We have studied the effect of local Coulomb interactions on the electronic structure of the molecular magnet Mn12-acetate within the LDA+U approach. The account of the on-site repulsion results in a finite energy gap and an integer value of the molecule's magnetic moment, both quantities being in a good agreement with the experimental results. The resulting magnetic moments and charge states of non-equivalent manganese ions agree very well with experiments. The calculated values of the intramolecular exchange parameters depend on the molecule's spin configuration, differing by 25-30% between the ferrimagnetic ground state and the completely ferromagnetic configurations. The values of the ground-state exchange coupling parameters are in reasonable agreement with the recent data on the magnetization jumps in megagauss magnetic fields. Simple estimates show that the obtained exchange parameters can be applied, at least qualitatively, to the description of the spin excitations in Mn12-acetate., RevTeX, LaTeX2e, 4 EPS figures

Abstract

We used site-selective and element-specific resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study the electronic structure and the electron interaction effects in the molecular magnet [Mn12O12(CH3COO)(16)(H2O)(4)]center dot 2CH(3)COOH center dot 4H(2)O, and compared the experimental data with the results of local spin density approximation +U electron structure calculations which include the on-site Coulomb interactions. We found a good agreement between theory and experiment for the Coulomb repulsion parameter U = 4 eV. In particular, the p-d band separation of 1.8 eV has been found from the RIXS spectra, which is in accordance with the calculations. Similarly, the positions of the peaks in the XPS spectra agree with the calculated densities of p and d states. Using the results of the electronic structure calculations, we determined the intramolecular exchange parameters, and used them for diagonalization of the Mn-12 spin Hamiltonian. The calculated exchanges gave the correct ground state with the total spin S = 10.

Abstract

I have been chair of the Committee on Constitution & Bylaws (C&B) since 2011. I was an associate member in 2006–07 and have been a full committee member since 2008. During that period, there have been a lot of changes, not only to the ACS Governing Documents ( www.acs.org/bulletin5) but also to unit bylaws. In fact, from 2010 to 2012, C&B certified bylaw changes for divisions and local sections at a rate more than three times as high as was typical a decade ­earlier. The peak came in 2011, when the committee certified 28 sets of unit bylaws. Despite that tremendous activity, 108 local sections and three divisions have not updated their bylaws since 1999, out of the 187 local sections, 32 divisions, and five international chemical sciences chapters in ACS. Abstract

We report the results of a CGRO 3-week observation of the binary system containing the 47 ms pulsar PSR B1259-63 orbiting around a Be star companion in a very eccentric orbit. The PSR B1259-63 binary is a unique system for the study of the interaction of a rapidly rotating pulsar with time-variable nebular surroundings. CGRO observed the PSR B1259-63 system in coincidence with its most recent periastron passage (January 3-23, 1994). Unpulsed and non-thermal hard X-ray emission was detected up to 200 keV, with a photon index $1.8 \pm 0.2$ and a flux of ~4 mCrab, corresponding to a luminosity of a few 10^{34} erg/s at the distance of 2 kpc. The hard X-ray flux and spectrum detected by CGRO agrees with the X-ray emission measured by simultaneous ASCA observations. EGRET upper limits are significant, and exclude strong inverse Compton cooling in the PSR B1259-63 system. We interpret the observed non-thermal emission as synchrotron radiation of shocked electron/positron pairs of the relativistic pulsar wind interacting with the mass outflow from the Be star. Our results clearly indicate, for the first time in a binary pulsar, that high energy emission can be shock-powered rather than caused by accretion.
