ESTADISTICA E INVESTIGACION OPERATIVA ,INGENIERIA NUCLEAR - Abstract

A study of the time evolution of the transversal modes contained in a TEA CO2 laser cavity has been conducted via the analysis of the time-varying beam quality factor of the emitted pulse. The study reveals a substantial change in the beam quality factor during the pulse evolution stage. The results, when interpreted based on the appearance of a specific mode and its growth process, suggest an evolution by the laser cavity modes towards an almost stationary behavior.

- Abstract
Quantifying the genetic correlation between cancers can provide important insights into the mechanisms driving cancer etiology. Using genome-wide association study summary statistics across six cancer types based on a total of 296,215 cases and 301,319 controls of European ancestry, here we estimate the pair-wise genetic correlations between breast, colorectal, head/neck, lung, ovary and prostate cancer, and between cancers and 38 other diseases. We observed statistically significant genetic correlations between lung and head/neck cancer (rg = 0.57, p = 4.6 x 10-8), breast and ovarian cancer (rg = 0.24, p = 7 x 10-5), breast and lung cancer (rg = 0.18, p =1.5 x 10-6) and breast and colorectal cancer (rg = 0.15, p = 1.1 x 10-4). We also found that multiple cancers are genetically correlated with non-cancer traits including smoking, psychiatric diseases and metabolic characteristics. Functional enrichment analysis revealed a significant excess contribution of conserved and regulatory regions to cancer heritability. Our comprehensive analysis of cross-cancer heritability suggests that solid tumors arising across tissues share in part a common germline genetic basis.Copyright © 2019, The Author(s).

- Abstract
Background Reaching an acceptable participation rate in screening programs is challenging. With the objective of supporting the Belarus government to implement mammography screening as a single intervention, we analyse the main determinants of breast cancer screening participation. Methods We developed a discrete choice experiment using a mixed research approach, comprising a literature review, in-depth interviews with key informants (n = 23), “think aloud” pilots (n = 10) and quantitative measurement of stated preferences for a representative sample of Belarus women (n = 428, 89% response rate). The choice data were analysed using a latent class logit model with four classes selected based on statistical (consistent Akaike information criterion) and interpretational considerations. Results Women in the sample were representative of all six geographic regions, mainly urban (81%), and high-education (31%) characteristics. Preferences of women in all four classes were primarily influenced by the perceived reliability of the test (sensitivity and screening method) and costs. Travel and waiting time were important components in the decision for 34% of women. Most women in Belarus preferred mammography screening to the existing clinical breast examination (90%). However, if the national screening program is restricted in capacity, this proportion of women will drop to 55%. Women in all four classes preferred combined screening (mammography with clinical breast examination) to single mammography. While this preference was stronger if lower test sensitivity was assumed, 28% of women consistently gave more importance to combined screening than to test sensitivity. Conclusion Women in Belarus were favourable to mammography screening. Population should be informed that there are no benefits of combined screening compared to single mammography. The results of this study are directly relevant to policy make

We observed statistically significant genetic correlations between lung and head/neck cancer (rg = 0.57, p = 4.6 × 10-8), breast and ovarian cancer (rg = 0.24, p = 7 × 10-5), breast and lung cancer (rg = 0.18, p =1.5 × 10-6) and breast and colorectal cancer (rg = 0.15, p = 1.1 × 10-4). We also found that multiple cancers are genetically correlated with non-cancer traits including smoking, psychiatric diseases and metabolic characteristics. Functional enrichment analysis revealed a significant excess contribution of conserved and regulatory regions to cancer heritability. Our comprehensive analysis of cross-cancer heritability suggests that solid tumors arising across tissues share in part a common germline genetic basis.

We observed statistically significant genetic correlations between lung and head/neck cancer (rg = 0.57, p = 4.6 × 10−8), breast and ovarian cancer (rg = 0.24, p = 7 × 10−5), breast and lung cancer (rg = 0.18, p =1.5 × 10−6) and breast and colorectal cancer (rg = 0.15, p = 1.1 × 10−4).

- Abstract
We propose for the first time a simple realization of a two-dimensional Parity-Time symmetric hexagonal shaped photonic structure composed of honeycomb lattice. The structure has a symmetric periodic modulation of the refractive index on the wavelength scale, which is combined with an anti-symmetric gain/loss distribution on the same scale. That leads to non-reciprocal light coupling at resonant frequencies. The design of the realistic structure is based on a simple physical concept: alternating low index cylinders with gain and loss in a honeycomb configuration, embedded in a higher index dielectric background. © 2014 IEEE.

- Abstract
We propose a 2-dimensonal PT-symmetric photonic honeycomb structure that supports chiral Block-likemodes being its excitation input and frequency dependent. We show that while the fundamental resonant frequency excites the counterclockwisemode, the clockwisemode is excited at the corresponding second harmonic frequency from the same input channel. The geometry is derived as the simplest nontrivial extension from 1-dimensional PT-symmetric systems to provide asymmetric coupling between harmonic wave components of the electromagnetic field. The PT-symmetric honeycomb is generated by a closed set of three lattice vectors that enable the simultaneous resonance of two disjoint triads of wavevectors in a circular coupling. As a basic effect, we numerically show the measurable asymmetric transmission of Gaussian light beams incident on such a finite-sized structure with a hexagonal shape, at the fundamental and second harmonic resonant frequencies. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

- Abstract
We study propagation light beams in 2D photonic periodic nanostructures with both index and gain/loss modulations. We determine the conditions for complex periodic media with in-phase gain and index modulations to support self-collimation, non-diffractive propagation, with simultaneous non-diffusive broadening of the beam. We also analyze self-collimation in media where index and gain modulations are dephased by a quarter of the spatial period, hence being PT-symmetric. The propagation properties of such PT-symmetric complex media may be reduced to two limiting cases, either to a Photonic Crystal case with a pure index modulation or to a pure gain modulated media, at each side of the PT-transition condition. © 2015 IEEE., ADVA,Ericsson,Silicon Labs

- Abstract
Non-Hermitian potentials, as known since a decade, can favor unidirectionality of the flows in one and two-dimensional systems. Inspired by such counterintuitive property of non-Hermitian potential, we propose a novel concept of PT-vector fields to manipulate the field flows in two- (or higher) dimensional systems. The idea is based on designing complex potentials favoring arbitrary vector fields of directionality p(r) with desired shapes and topologies. To achieve this, we derive a new mathematical tool referred as local Hilbert transform. We study interesting cases of such vector fields in the form of sink, vortex, and circular channel, constructed from different background patterns using local Hilbert transform. This new concept provides a precise control over the dynamics of the probe fields, which may have potential applications in technological systems. © 2018 SPIE., The work was financially supported by Spanish Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia and European Union FEDER through project FIS2015-65998-C2-1-P, NATO SPS research grant No: 985048, Erasmus Mundus Doctorate Program Europhotonics (Grant No. 159224-1-2009-1-FR-ERA MUNDUS-EMJD) and Turkish academy of Science.

- Abstract
We propose a simple realistic two-dimensional complex parity-time-symmetric photonic structure that is described by a non-Hermitian potential but possesses real-valued eigenvalues. The concept is developed from basic physical considerations to provide asymmetric coupling between harmonic wave components of the electromagnetic field. The structure results in a nonreciprocal chirality and asymmetric transmission between in- and out-coupling channels into the structure. The analytical results are supported by a numerical study of the Bloch-like mode formations and calculations of a realistic planar semiconductor structure. © 2015 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
Photonic crystal waveguides supporting band gap guided modes hold great potential to tailor the group velocity of propagating light. We propose and explore different wavelength demultiplexer design approaches that utilize slow light concept. By altering the dielectric filling factors of each waveguide segment, one can show that different frequencies can be separated and extracted at different locations along the cascaded waveguide. Furthermore, to eliminate the inherent reflection loss of such a design, a composite structure involving a tapered waveguide with a side-coupled resonator is also presented. Such a structure features not only a forward propagating wave but also a backward propagating wave acting as a feedback mechanism for the drop channels. We show that by careful design of the waveguide and the resonator, the destructive and instructive interference of these waves can effectively eliminate the reflection loss and increase the coupling efficiency, respectively. Numerical and experimental verification of the proposed structures show that the targeted frequencies can be coupled out with low cross-talks and moderate quality factors, while maintaining a compact size. © 2016 IEEE., H.K. acknowledges the partial support of the Turkish Academy of Sciences.

- Abstract
We propose a new type of add-drop Micro ring resonator that is made up of gain and loss materials. In all-dielectric linear systems, light transmission is reciprocal: A symmetric transmission spectrum is observed when an incident source is pumped from one side and output power detected in the other side or vice versa. On the other hand, Parity-time (PT) symmetric optical systems that consist of balanced gain-loss modulation possess unique characteristics such as unidirectional beam propagation, asymmetric light transmission and nonreciprocal chirality. In this study, we proved numerically that PT symmetric optical resonator designs can be achieved by properly arranging the gain-loss modulation so that different resonant modes can be promoted depending on the direction of source incidence. © 2015 IEEE., ADVA,Ericsson,Silicon Labs

- Abstract
Background: Tobacco use is a well-established risk factor for head and neck cancer (HNC). However, less is known about the potential impact of exposure to tobacco at an early age on HNC risk. Methods: We analyzed individual-level data on ever tobacco smokers from 27 case-control studies (17,146 HNC cases and 17,449 controls) in the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) consortium. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using random-effects logistic regression models. Results: Without adjusting for tobacco packyears, we observed that younger age at starting tobacco use was associated with an increased HNC risk for ever smokers (OR<10 years vs. ≥30 years: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.35, 1.97). However, the observed association between age at starting tobacco use and HNC risk became null after adjusting for tobacco packyears (OR<10 years vs. ≥30 years: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.80, 1.19). In the stratified analyses on HNC subsites by tobacco packyears or years since quitting, no difference in the association between age at start and HNC risk was observed. Conclusions: Results from this pooled analysis suggest that increased HNC risks observed with earlier age at starting tobacco smoking are largely due to longer duration and higher cumulative tobacco exposures.

- Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed at re-evaluating the strength and shape of the dose-response relationship between the combined (or joint) effect of intensity and duration of cigarette smoking and the risk of head and neck cancer (HNC). We explored this issue considering bivariate spline models, where smoking intensity and duration were treated as interacting continuous exposures. Materials and Methods: We pooled individual-level data from 33 case-control studies (18,260 HNC cases and 29,844 controls) participating in the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) consortium. In bivariate regression spline models, exposures to cigarette smoking intensity and duration (compared with never smokers) were modeled as a linear piecewise function within a logistic regression also including potential confounders. We jointly estimated the optimal knot locations and regression parameters within the Bayesian framework. Results: For oral-cavity/pharyngeal (OCP) cancers, an odds ratio (OR) >5 was reached after 30 years in current smokers of ∼20 or more cigarettes/day. Patterns of OCP cancer risk in current smokers differed across strata of alcohol intensity. For laryngeal cancer, ORs >20 were found for current smokers of ≥20 cigarettes/day for ≥30 years. In former smokers who quit ≥10 years ago, the ORs were approximately halved for OCP cancers, and ∼1/3 for laryngeal cancer, as compared to the same levels of intensity and duration in current smokers. Conclusion: Referring to bivariate spline models, this study better quantified the joint effect of intensity and duration of cigarette smoking on HNC risk, further stressing the need of smoking cessation policies.

Numerical investigations are carried out to analyze thermally-induced optical aberration in an Nd:YAG laser. An 'intensity moment formalism' is used to characterize the overall spatial properties of the laser beam under a wide range of resonance conditions. The behavior of the beam quality parameter is also studied as a function of the refractive power. Results show that optical aberration exhibited by the laser beams can be eliminated by reducing the device's small-signal gain.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Both the intensity distribution and the degree of coherence between pairs of points along the propagation axis (z-coherence) are derived in closed form for a phenomenon of self-focusing produced by circularly coherent light. The first confirms results previously obtained numerically, while the second exhibits new complex features. The physical interpretation is obtained by a suitable pseudo-modal expansion that suggests an analogy with a simple two-mode structure.
