264. Stability Analysis of Neutral Systems: A Delay-Dependent Criterion.

Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to investigate the stability of neutral systems, by using the comparison method introduced by Zhang, Knospe and Tsiotras [13] for the standard time-delay case. The central idea consists in replacing the delay by two appropriate Padé approximations, obtaining two comparison systems whose robust stability give a simple delay-dependent stability condition for the (nominal) neutral system. Such a condition guarantees, as in the standard time-delay case, an a priori upper bound for the degree of conservatism induced by the comparison method. This degree depends on the order of the Padé approximation and its estimation makes the difference between this method and other approaches encountered in the literature. Abstract

We study the notion of cross Gramians for nonlinear gradient systems, using the characterization in terms of prolongation and gradient extension associated to the system. The cross Gramian is given for the variational system associated to the original nonlinear gradient system. We obtain linearization results that correspond to the notion of a cross Gramian for symmetric linear systems. Abstract

To evaluate the functional state of peripheral sensitivity we measured the perception threshold to an electrical stimulus applied deeply at the level of the lower limbs in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients. The data were obtained using a phase-sensitive technique with a sinusoidal applied voltage at 1592 Hz. The test signal applied through needle electrodes was monitored using a current-to-voltage convertor, the current being considered to have two components, one resistive (IR) in phase with the voltage V across the electrodes, and the other capacitive (IC) 90 degrees out of phase. A significantly (p less than 0.001) higher perception threshold was found in diabetic patients than in nondiabetic subjects with all three electrical variables measured: IR, IC and V. Abstract

A self-balancing two-channel electrodermal impedance reactometer is described. It uses a phase-sensitive detector and incorporates feedback loops to achieve rapid automatic balancing of both resistive and capacitive components of skin impedance. The calibrated output which is produced is proportional to the skin electrical resistance and relative capacitance variation values and latency of the electrodermal response. The results of preliminary investigations on diabetics and nondiabetics are presented illustrating its application for the measurement of the electrodermal response to an external acoustic stimulus as a variation of the skin electrical resistance ΔR/R and latency in the appearance of the response. The results obtained show the electrodermal impedance reactometer to be highly technical, non-invasive, easy to handle and sensitive for evaluating autonomic dysfunction in diabetic neuropathy. Abstract

In this paper we present a time-domain notion of moments for a class of single-input, single-output nonlinear systems in terms of the evolution of the output of a generalized signal generator driven by the nonlinear system. We also define a new notion of moment matching and present a family of (nonlinear) parametrized reduced order models that achieve moment matching. We establish relations with existing notions of moment for nonlinear systems, showing that the newly derived and the existing families of reduced order models that achieve nonlinear moment matching, respectively, are equivalent. Furthermore, we compute the reduced order model that matches the moments at two chosen signal generators (one exciting the input of the system and another driven by the system), simultaneously. We also present a family of models computed on the basis of a nonlinear extension of the Petrov-Galerkin projection that achieve moment matching. Abstract

In this technical note we study the problem of computing reduced order models of order $\nu$ that match 2 $\nu$ moments of the given to-be-reduced system at two sets of $\nu$ interpolation points, called two-sided moment matching, in the time-domain framework. We also study the time-domain moment matching problem of the state-space representations of the first order derivative of a transfer function. Based on this, we show that the solution of the two-sided time-domain moment matching problem at non-distinct $(\nu)$ interpolation points yields a unique $\nu$ order model that satisfies the following properties: the model matches the moments of the given system at the interpolation points and the same property holds for the first order derivatives of the corresponding transfer functions. Abstract

The simulation of the exterior meteorological conditions and its action upon the buildings, is a challenge for which the engineering software developers try to create the right software tools. COMSOL is one of the most complete and complex analysis software package available nowadays on the market. This software package is based on many modules which come to help researchers in a great variety of physics and chemistry fields. Starting with version 4.3, the module which simulates and solves heat transfer problems, has a new function: solar radiation simulation. Through this new function, architects, engineers and researchers, are now able to simulate the action of the solar radiation. In our paper, this function is used to simulate the solar radiation exposure of a one storey high building, positioned from the geographical point of view in the North Western part of Romania. The study was done for a typical summer day and it shows, in a graphical and easy to understand way, which are the most exposed areas of the building to the solar radiation. This way, we can identify the interior zones in which the problem of thermal accumulation due to solar radiation, are most likely to disturb the interior comfort parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
