Abstract

Kemi, Aflatoxin B, (AFB1) is a clastogen that causes cellular damage by covalent modification of nucleic acids. In this investigation, male rats were injected i.p. with AFB1 (8 mg/kg b.w.) in DMSO and the same dose of AFB1 was also administered intratracheally (i.t.) to the animals separately. The animals were killed after 26 h of the carcinogen treatment, femur bone was removed, and bone marrow cells were isolated and stained with Mayer's hematoxylin and eosin. Micronuclei (Mn) were scored by using light microscopy. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was prepared from rats administered AFB1 i.t. A part of BAL was fixed with 70% ethanol, stained with the fluorochrome DAPI, and analysed for cell cycle variations; the other part of the lavage was used for making slides to record Mn with a fluorescent microscope. A significantly greater proportion of lung cells were found to enter cell cycle with extended S-phase due to AFB1 treatment. Mn were induced in polychromatic erythrocytes (PCE) as compared to normochromatic erythrocytes (NCE) in the bone marrow of AFB1-treated rats, where there was nearly a three-fold increase in the number of Mn of bone marrow cells. The administration of AFB1 resulted in a two-fold rise in the Mn in the lung cells. The effect of BSO, DEM, and PB, the modulators of AFB1 metabolism, was studied on AFB1-induced Mn formation. A significant increase in the Mn score in PCEs of BSO- and DEM-treated rats was noted, while a slight reduction in the Mn score was noted in the case of PB-treated rats. The administration of the methanol extract of the leaves of Piper argyrophyllum (taken up in DMSO) to rats for a week exhibited normalising effect on AFB1-induced Mn in bone marrow cells. These observations record the induction of Mn in lung cells due to AFB1 for the first time. Abstract

ABSTRACTImaging technique based on aperture synthesis scheme using sub-arrays and post data acquisition beam forming at the millimetre wave frequencies is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Technique has been extended for use in three-dimensional imaging and multiple target scenario. Simulation results verifying the proposed technique are presented. This approach can be used to construct three-dimensional images using separate transmitting and receiving arrays. A program based on this imaging technique has been written in MATLAB to simulate the target scene and to investigate reconstruction of the image theoretically and with the data collected experimentally. Experimental verification has been done using horn antennas as transmitting and receiving apertures having 10° beam width and 24 dB gain at 30 GHz. Precise positioning of transmitting and receiving antennas is one of the critical requirements at millimetre frequencies. A practical system designed to work on this technique, would necessarily require precise fabrication and positioning especially at higher millimetre wave bands as the whole process is phase sensitive. But, the preliminary results show that the method has good active imaging performance indicating potential applications of this technique in the future at higher millimetre wave frequencies.

Abstract

Lucerne or alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) vernacularly called 'Rijka' is one of the important fodder crop of family Leguminoseae and genus Medicago grown on large scale. Various seed borne mycoflora reduce seed quality and quantity in terms of both chemical composition and weight. Different biocides (bio-agents and plant leaf extract) used as seed treatment in vitro. Trichoderma viridae, T. harzianum followed by Pseudomonas fluorescens and FL-18 (bio-agent) and neem leaf extract followed by dhatura, mahendi, safeda and tulsi (leaf extract) proved to be effective in improving seed germination and vigour index by reducing pre- and post-emergence mortality. Abstract

Six seed samples were collected from different sources, showing deformed (shrivelled and gall formed), discoloured (brown) and damaged (insects and mechanical) seeds. Impurities of one kind or other were also seen in all the six samples. Six different kinds of fungal spores were detected by Seed Washing Test on the seed testa of all the seed samples tested. The spore load was maximum in sample 'E', while it was minimum in sample 'F'. A total of eight seed borne fungi were obtained in Blotter and Agar Plate Methods and these were Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Drechslera australiensis, Fusarium moniliforme, Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizopus sp. Highest count of mycoflora was observed by Agar Plate Method in sample E followed by 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D' and 'F' in comparison to Blotter Method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
