Electronic correlations could have significant impact on the material properties. They are typically pronounced for localized orbitals and enhanced in low-dimensional systems, so two-dimensional (2D) transition metal compounds could be a good platform to study their effects. Recently, a new class of 2D transition metal compounds, the MoSi$_2$N$_4$-family materials, have been discovered, and some of them exhibit intrinsic magnetism. Here, taking monolayer VSi$_{2}$P$_{4}$ as an example from the family, we investigate the impact of correlation effects on its physical properties, based on the first-principles calculations. We find that different correlation strength can drive the system into a variety of interesting ground states, with rich magnetic, topological and valley features. With increasing correlation strength, while the system favors a ferromagnetic semiconductor state for most cases, the magnetic anisotropy and the band gap type undergo multiple transitions, and in the process, the band edges can form single, two or three valleys for electrons or holes. Remarkably, there is a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator phase, which has a unit Chern number. The boundary of the QAH phase correspond to the half-valley semimetal state with fully valley polarized bulk carriers. We further show that for phases with the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and orbital character of valleys enable an intrinsic valley polarization for electrons but not for holes. This electron valley polarization can be switched by reversing the magnetization direction, providing a new route of magnetic control of valleytronics. Our result sheds light on the possible role of correlation effects in the 2D transition metal compounds, and it will open new perspectives for spintronic, valleytronic and topological nanoelectronic applications based on these materials., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Among the most promising terahertz (THz) radiation devices, gyrotrons can generate powerful THz-wave radiation in an open resonant structure. Unfortunately, such an oscillation using high-Q axial mode has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated to suffer from strong ohmic losses. In this paper, a solution to such a challenging problem is to include a narrow belt of lossy section in the interaction circuit to stably constitute the traveling wave interaction (high-order-axial-mode, HOAM), and employ a down-tapered magnetic field to amplify the forward-wave component. A scheme based on the traveling-wave interaction concept is proposed to strengthen electron beam-wave interaction efficiency and simultaneously reduce the ohmic loss in a 1-THz third harmonic gyrotron, which is promising for further advancement of high-power continuous-wave operation.

We propose DeRenderNet, a deep neural network to decompose the albedo and latent lighting, and render shape-(in)dependent shadings, given a single image of an outdoor urban scene, trained in a self-supervised manner. To achieve this goal, we propose to use the albedo maps extracted from scenes in videogames as direct supervision and pre-compute the normal and shadow prior maps based on the depth maps provided as indirect supervision. Compared with state-of-the-art intrinsic image decomposition methods, DeRenderNet produces shadow-free albedo maps with clean details and an accurate prediction of shadows in the shape-independent shading, which is shown to be effective in re-rendering and improving the accuracy of high-level vision tasks for urban scenes.

We present SOLID-Net, a neural network for spatially-varying outdoor lighting estimation from a single outdoor image for any 2D pixel location. Previous work has used a unified sky environment map to represent outdoor lighting. Instead, we generate spatially-varying local lighting environment maps by combining global sky environment map with warped image information according to geometric information estimated from intrinsics. As no outdoor dataset with image and local lighting ground truth is readily available, we introduce the SOLID-Img dataset with physically-based rendered images and their corresponding intrinsic and lighting information. We train a deep neural network to regress intrinsic cues with physically-based constraints and use them to conduct global and local lightings estimation. Experiments on both synthetic and real datasets show that SOLID-Net significantly outperforms previous methods.
