Brazil has its wide diversification of natural resources, due to geology of each area. It includes the mining as a process that gathers an economic progress and at the same time, it cannot, to cause unbalances and aggressions to the environment. The municipal district of Santa Maria in its mineral potential, seeking to the creation of immediate employment, linked mainly to the civil construction, developed essentially in extraction of clay, sands and the mineral water. The visual impact caused by the activity of mineral extraction change the municipal image, mainly due the ciliate forest extraction and the erosion. Than, the recovery of these areas becomes slower and complex. The mineral extraction in this district quest the economic and social development and supportability of resources in a pragmatic way relate with the industry of civil construction.

Various statistical methods for predicting mineral potential from geological maps are reviewed. It is pointed out that, if the features are coded in more detail for relatively small cells, several new problems arise because of the dichotomous nature of the resulting variables. The objective of this paper is to present a method for the automatic contouring of both discovered and undiscovered deposits of a given type in terms of the geological framework. It is based on the assumption that the probability of occurrence of a deposit is fully determined by a combination of functions of the mappable geological attributes in a region. Application of the logistic model is proposed for the situation in which relatively few deposits of a given type are known to exist in the study region.

The mineral potential of the Arouca-Castro Daire area in the north of Portugal was studied, using geochemical prospecting techniques, with the particular objective of discovering new occurrences of Sb which, in general, are associated with Au. Regional geochemical prospecting of the area was carried out by means of systematic sampling of stream sediments and subsequent analysis for Sb. Detailed geochemical studies made later in an anomalous area and including soil sampling, confirmed its potential interest in terms of possible Sb mineralization. The geochemical data obtained were treated by univariate statistical-mathematical techniques (mainly computer-orientated), which proved to be of great importance in terms of prospecting in making a reliable interpretation of the results obtained. Particular emphasis is given to the application of trend-surface and moving-average analysis in the interpretation of the geochemical data previously obtained.

Giant quartz vein hosted along faults in granitoids, were identified in Catas Altas Massif, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Supposing hidrothermal character of these veins, geological reconnaissance was done to evaluate the mineral potential in the granitoids areas. As a result some epigenetic ocorrences of W, Sn, F and Ba were detected. Although no detailed study of these veins related with the spatially associated mineralization was done, it is suggested to use the giant quartz veins as a guide prospection.

Purpose and Scope The study of the St. Joe area was done cooperatively by the Northern Pacific Railway Company and the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology to map the geology and to evaluate the mineral potential. The mineral evaluation was described in a private company report (1963). The geologic part of the study by the Bureau of Mines and Geology covered 2,440 km 2 . The St. Joe area is an excellent example of progressive regional metamorphism with good stratigraphic control; changes in structural development are well illustrated. This study is carried into the kyanite zone; the sillimanite zone was studied by Juras (1974). Location The St. Joe area lies in northern daho, north of the Clearwater River (Fig. 1). Most of the area drains into the St. Joe River, except for a small part on the south which drains to the Little North Fork of the Clearwater River. Altitudes range from a low of 648 m (2,140 ft) on the St. Joe River to a high of 2,330 m (7,690 ft) at Illinois Peak. Average relief is in the range of 758 to 909 m (2,500 to 3,000 ft). The valleys are mostly deep and V-shaped; minor glaciation has occurred at a few of the higher peaks.

The “Rostov Conference on Regional Study of Deep Geologic Structure of Closed Areas” was held April 10-13, 1962. It was attended by 186 representatives of various Russian geological administrations. Papers presented included several dealing with the status, methods, and trend of regional deep study in various parts of the U.S.S.R. Also progress reports of expert commissions on mapping of various major closed areas were given and decisions of the commissions were approved. The conference passed an extended resolution on operational and organizational points noting a progressive systematic study of deeper structures is one of the most important points of geological service. A lineament map of Peninsular India south of 21°N latitude uas prepared involving 51 frames of Landsat II and Landsat II on scale 1:1 million. A study of this map has shown significant relationship of the lineaments in the tectonic history and sedimentation in parts of south India and the preferential location of features like mineralisation, seismicity, hot springs, localisation and movement of groundwater along the lineaments.

The following report is an evaluation of the mineral potential of the Lone Peak Wilderness study area, Utah.

The US Bureau of Mines and the US Geological Survey appraised the mineral resources and mineral resource potential of this area that is about 45 mi west of Salt Lake City. Inferred subeconomic resources of sand and gravel and of limestone suitable for use in making cement exist within this study area, but these are not likely to be developed. There are no other identified resources in this study area. Roughly the southern half and the northeastern corner of this study area have a moderate mineral resource potential for undiscovered lead, zinc, silver, gold, and mercury in vein and replacement deposits and for undiscovered sediment-hosted, disseminated gold resources. The remaining parts of this study area are assigned a low mineral potential for these types of resources. A small area at the southwestern corner of this study area may contain thermal waters and is assigned a moderate potential for undiscovered geothermal resources. This entire study area has a low potential for oil and gas resources.

The west coast of Tasmania is a highly mineralised area with a wide variety of mineral deposits. A number of experimental geophysical surveys have recently been carried out as part of a government funded investigation of the mineral potential of this region. The surveys included in situ time domain spectral IP measurements. These were made over fresh and altered country rock, barren sulphides and black shales, as well as over the economic mineralisation. The data was analysed by fitting a single Cole-Cole dispersion to the observed data, using a modification of Marquardt's (1963) inversion routine. Excellent fits were obtained for more than 90% of the measurements.

This report contains statements made by U.S. representatives before the Economic and Technical Subcomittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of the Seabed and Ocean Floor Beyond the Limits of National Jurisdiction during its March 1969 meeting. Of the eight territories (and subsequently states) of former French West Africa, the Ivory Coast has perhaps the best basic potential for economic development. In terms of location, the country lies in the commercially productive West African rainforest and savanna, with the consequent diversity of agricultural production. In terms of specific commodities, the climatic base is well suited for the production of coffee, cacao, bananas, oil palm, coconut palm, pineapples, rubber, cola nuts, cotton peanuts, and other commercially important crops, as well as the exploitation of tropical timber stands. In this respect, the Ivory Coast is very similar to the states of Ghana and Nigeria, and totally unlike Senegal. The latter, although more strategically located, lies almost entirely within the savanna and steppic zones of West Africa and has virtually a mono-agricultural base - the commercial exploitation of the peanut. Also, unlike Guinea, the Ivory Coast is a relatively flat country with few physiographic limitations to the expansion of commercial agriculture and transportation, though, to be sure, the Ivory Coast apparently does not have the mineral potential of her neighbor to the west.

Exploration in the sixties has indicated that promising mineral potential of the Adelaidean to Cretaceous sediments of the Georgina Basin (see figure) lies in phosphates, and possibly lead-zinc deposits and hydrocarbons, within Cambrian and Ordovician sediments. Phosphorite has been mined from the thick accumulation of sediments in the Burke River Structural Belt, and found elsewhere; the hydrocarbon search has been most promising in the west in the Toko Syncline (Harrison, 1979).To help put future resource studies of this area on a broader base, a Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) multidisciplinary team undertook an overview interpretation of the geology and available regional geophysics in late 1978 to determine the structure and extent of the Georgina Basin and the upper crustal geology of the region. Principal finding, based on assumptions of rock physical properties, was that there may be 10 or more areas of thick preserved Adelaidean to Lower Cambrian sediments, and five of Palaeozoic sediments.
