Background: The Platinum-based combination has been proven to have an outstanding effect on patients with platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer (PSROC), but the best scientific combination has not been established yet. The present study is aimed to seek the best treatment plan for PSROC.Methods: We did a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis, during which lite before March 2022 were retrieved on PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled databases. We included randomized controlled clinical trials comparing chemotherapy combinations with other treatments for patients with PSROC. The important outcomes concerned were progression-free survival (PFS) (the primary outcome), overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), adverse events (AEs), and AEs-related discontinuation. All outcomes were ranked according to the surface under the cumulative ranking curve.Results: 26 trials involving 10441 patients were retrieved in this study. For the initial treatment of PSROC, carboplatin plus pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) plus bevacizumab had the best PFS [hazard ratio (HR) 0.59, 95% credible interval (CI) 0.51–0.68]; Carboplatin plus paclitaxel plus bevacizumab resulted in the best OS (HR 1.22, 95% CI 1.09–1.35) and ORR [odds ratio (OR) 1.22, 95% CI 1.09–1.35]. For the maintenance therapy in PSROC, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) following platinum-based chemotherapy provided the best PFS (HR 0.64, 95% CI 0.61–0.68), the highest frequency of adverse events of grade three or higher (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.07–0.44) but the treatment discontinuation was generally low. Subgroup analysis suggested that trabectedin plus PLD was comparable to single platinum in prolonging PFS in the platinum-free interval (6–12 months).Conclusion: Both platinum-based chemotherapy plus PARPi and platinum-based chemotherapy plus bevacizumab had higher survival benefits than other treatments in PSROC. Trabectedin plus PLD might be a potential alternative treatment strategy for the partially platinum-sensitive subpopulation with intolerance to platinum.Systematic Review Registration: [https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?], identifier [CRD42022326573].

In recent years, more and more single-cell technologies have been developed. A vast amount of single-cell omics data has been generated by large projects, such as the Human Cell Atlas, the Mouse Cell Atlas, the Mouse RNA Atlas, the Mouse ATAC Atlas, and the Plant Cell Atlas. Based on these single-cell big data, thousands of bioinformatics algorithms for quality control, clustering, cell-type annotation, developmental inference, cell-cell transition, cell-cell interaction, and spatial analysis are developed. With powerful experimental single-cell technology and state-of-the-art big data analysis methods based on artificial intelligence, the molecular landscape at the single-cell level can be revealed. With spatial transcriptomics and single-cell multi-omics, even the spatial dynamic multi-level regulatory mechanisms can be deciphered. Such single-cell technologies have many successful applications in oncology, assisted reproduction, embryonic development, and plant breeding. We not only review the experimental and bioinformatics methods for single-cell research, but also discuss their applications in various fields and forecast the future directions for single-cell technologies. We believe that spatial transcriptomics and single-cell multi-omics will become the next booming business for mechanism research and commercial industry. Growing evidence has shown that the efficacy of systemic administration of daptomycin for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-related infections is satisfactory. However, the clinical efficacy of the local administration of daptomycin for the management of osteoarticular infections remains unclear. This in vitro study compared the efficacy of daptomycin and vancomycin against MRSA biofilms. The elution kinetics of daptomycin and vancomycin, combined with gentamicin and loaded with either β-tricalcium phosphate/calcium sulfate or calcium sulfate, in the presence of MRSA infection, was assessed. Their efficacy in preventing biofilm formation and killing pre-formed biofilms was assessed using colony-forming unit count and confocal laser scanning microscopy. In addition, the efficacy of daptomycin, vancomycin, and gentamicin in prophylaxis and eradication of MRSA biofilms was also evaluated. Daptomycin + gentamicin and vancomycin + gentamicin displayed similar antimicrobial potency against MRSA, by either β-tricalcium phosphate/calcium sulfate or calcium sulfate. In the prevention assays, both daptomycin + gentamicin and vancomycin + gentamicin showed similar efficacy in preventing bacterial colony formation, with approximately 6 logs lower colony-forming units than those in the control group at both 1 and 3 days. The killing effect on pre-formed biofilms showed significant decreases of approximately 4 logs at 1 and 3 days following treatment with daptomycin + gentamicin and vancomycin + gentamicin. In addition, the confocal laser scanning microscopy results support the colony-forming unit data. Moreover, single use of vancomycin and gentamicin showed similar efficacies in preventing and killing MRSA biofilms, both of which were better than that of gentamicin. Our study demonstrated that vancomycin + gentamicin and daptomycin + gentamicin loaded with β-tricalcium phosphate/calcium sulfate or calcium sulfate showed similar prophylactic and killing effects on MRSA biofilms, implying a potential indication of local administration daptomycin for the treatment of MRSA-associated osteoarticular infections, especially if vancomycin administration presents limitations.

Nickel cobalt phosphides electrocatalysts have shown great potential for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but further improvements are necessary. Here, nickel cobalt phosphide nanosheets were synthesized via electrodeposition followed by phosphorization methodology. The relationships between phosphorization temperature and the structure or hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity were studied. The catalyst phosphated at 350 °C (NiCoP-350/CC) displayed excellent HER performance in alkaline media with a low overpotential of 59 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 (η10 = 59 mV). This could be attributed to the formation and better dispersion of active NiCoP crystalline phase on the surface of carbon cloth.

Abstract This study proposes the use of the voxel-based morphometry (VBM) technique to investigate structural alterations of the cerebral cortex in patients with strabismus and amblyopia (SA). Sixteen patients with SA and sixteen healthy controls (HCs) underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Original whole brain images were analyzed using the VBM method. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between mean gray matter volume (GMV) and clinical manifestations. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was applied to classify the mean GMV values of the SA group and HCs. Compared with the HCs, GMV values in the SA group showed a significant difference in the right superior temporal gyrus, posterior and anterior lobes of the cerebellum, bilateral parahippocampal gyrus, and left anterior cingulate cortex. The mean GMV value in the right superior temporal gyrus, posterior and anterior lobes of the cerebellum, and bilateral parahippocampal gyrus were negatively correlated with the angle of strabismus. The ROC curve analysis of each cerebral region confirmed the accuracy of the area under the curve. Patients with SA have reduced GMV values in some brain regions. These findings might help to reveal the potential pathogenesis of SA and its relationship with the atrophy of specific regions of the brain.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of magnesium (Mg) and strontium (Sr) surface modification on osseointegration of titanium (Ti) implants with a hierarchically structured coating. Mg- and Sr-doped hierarchical surface coating has been fabricated on Ti implant through the hydrothermal method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), inductively coupled plasma/optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and contact-angle measurement have been applied to characterize the surface coating. The biocompatibility and osseointegration of Ti implants with Mg- and Sr-dropped hierarchical coating have been assessed in vivo using a rat tibia implantation model. The proposed mechanism that improves osteointegration of Mg- and Sr-doped coating Ti implant has been evaluated by culturing rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) alone or co-culturing Schwann cells (SCs) and BMSCs on the coating surfaces. Our results proved that both Mg- and Sr-doped hierarchical coating could promote osseointegration with Mg exerted a stronger effect in vivo. The in vitro outcomes showed that Mg-doped coating enhances BMSCs adhesion, while the Sr-doped surface promotes osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. Furthermore, when BMSCs were cultured with SCs, Mg-dropped surfaces accelerated not only the adhesion but also osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. Conclusively, the hierarchical surface coating with trace element modification can provide a strong guarantee for endosseous applications of titanium (Ti) implants, and Mg-doped hierarchical coating is more effective in promoting osseointegration than Sr modification.

As computed tomography image (CTI) sequence can be regarded as a medical image set, which contains several neighboring and visually similar CTI s with temporal information, conducting an efficient similarity retrieval of the large CTI sequences poses great challenge. Finding the similar CTI sequences can assist diagnosis and treatment by allowing physicians to quickly locate pathological images of lesion tissues, accurately find the source of disease. The paper proposes a progressive Privacy-preserving similarity Retrieval scheme for the CTI Sequences in the mobile telemedicine network (MTN) called the P RS method. To better facilitate the P RS processing, five enabling techniques are devised: 1) key CTI (KCTI)-based similarity measure, 2) local privacy preserving scheme, 3) zero-distance (ZD)-based distributed storage scheme, 4) uniform distributed index framework, and 5) crowd-assisted verification. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the retrieval efficiency of our proposed P RS method is about 90% higher than that of the existing ones.

To solve the problem of the moving target synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging from an incomplete echo, we proposed a novel SAR imaging method for the moving target with the azimuth missing data (MTIm-AMD) in this article. Instead of directly reconstructing the moving target image using the sparse SAR imaging method, we estimate and reconstruct the noncooperative moving target's complete echo from the azimuth incomplete echo based on its sparsity. At first, the noncooperative moving target's motion parameters are estimated from the incomplete echo. Then, to ensure that the complete echo can be well reconstructed using the compressed sensing method, these parameters are exploited to design a phase compensation function. Finally, using the reconstructed data, the fine-focused moving target can be obtained via the traditional SAR imaging algorithm. The simulation and experiment data results verify the effectiveness of the proposed MTIm-AMD method and demonstrate that the moving target can be fine imaging when the echo signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is higher than $-$20 dB and the azimuth missing ratio (AMR) is less than 70%. This implies that the proposed MTIm-AMD method achieves satisfactory robustness to echo SNR and can handle most AMR cases.

With the rapid advancement of medical imaging technologies, the high-resolution CT image data is becoming increasingly valuable for both medical research and clinical diagnosis. The paper takes lung CT image as an example. Retrieving images similar to the input one can help physicians with clinical diagnosis. In comparison to traditional content-based image retrieval, similarity retrieval of lung CT images requires higher retrieval accuracy, with similar requirements in external shape as well as internal vascular and lesion location similarity. In the state-of-the-art supervised deep learning networks, the learning of the network is based on labeling. The labeling of medical images, however, requires time and effort from professionals to label each image, which is prohibitively expensive. In this paper, we propose a weakly supervised deep learning network model for similarity analysis of lung CT images that is called a $W$ eakly $S$ upervised $s$ imilarity $A$ nalysis $N$ etwork ( $WSAN$ ). Extensive experiments show that the $WSAN$ model achieves satisfactory results in measuring the similarity between lung CT images and can be used for similarity retrieval tasks.

Abstract Background The present study aimed to develop and test an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB), which includes attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control, oral health knowledge, and past oral health behavior on the intention to improve oral health behaviors among primary school students in Shanghai, China. Methods A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 414 students in the third-grade from 10 classes of Mingqiang Primary School located in Shanghai, China. Participants were recruited in October 2019. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires, consisting of demographic characteristics, TPB variables, oral health knowledge and past oral health behaviors. Exploratory factor analysis was used to analyze TPB items. Pearson’s correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to identify the associated factors of intention to improve oral health behaviors. Results The study showed that among students in the third grade, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and past oral health behaviors were associated with the intention to improve oral health behaviors. Abstract The natural ligament–bone interface features gradient changes in matrix composition, architecture and cell phenotype, which play critical roles in reliable ligament fixation and smooth loading transfer. Mimicking such organisations in artificial composite tissue‐engineering scaffolds is important for realising functional fixation between ligament implants and host bones. Here, the authors aim to provide a comprehensive review on the latest strategies to fabricate biomimetic composite scaffolds for the regeneration of ligament‐to‐bone interface. The biomimetic composite scaffolds are divided into stratified and gradient scaffolds, which are characterised as layer‐specific and continuous changes, respectively, in scaffold materials and/or microstructures. Biofabrication strategies for different types of composite scaffolds are summarised. The effects of material/structural changes on cellular morphology, cell differentiation, in vivo osteointegration and multi‐tissue interface regeneration are highlighted. Finally, the potential challenges and future perspectives in engineering biomimetic composite scaffolds for ligament–bone interface regeneration are discussed.

Abstract Background Studies increasingly show that positive psychological constructs affect the mental health of cancer patients. However, most scales that measure hope, resilience, optimism and self-efficacy have been developed based on general populations. The aim of our study was to develop a psychological capital (PsyCap) questionnaire for patients with cancer (PCQ-C) to gauge their mental state more accurately. Methods The items for the scale were selected by comprehensive literature review and semi-structured interviews, and the relevant terms were screened by an expert panel. A pilot study was then conducted on 202 patients to reduce the item pool, and the reliability and validity of the scale were evaluated using 500 completed questionnaires. The test-retest reliability was then assessed using a subsample of 100 patients. Finally, the completed questionnaires of 229 patients with breast cancer were used to assess the criterion validity of the PCQ-C, including measures of depression and anxiety. Results Item reduction and exploratory factory analysis resulted in 24 items for self-efficacy, hope, resilience and optimism, accounting for 56.72% of the variance. Abstract Background Thrombocytopenia is one of the most common hematological disease that can be life-threatening caused by bleeding complications. However, the treatment options for thrombocytopenia remain limited. Methods In this study, giemsa staining, phalloidin staining, immunofluorescence and flow cytometry were used to identify the effects of 3,3ʹ-di-O-methylellagic acid 4ʹ-glucoside (DMAG), a natural ellagic acid derived from Sanguisorba officinalis L. (SOL) on megakaryocyte differentiation in HEL cells. Then, thrombocytopenia mice model was constructed by X-ray irradiation to evaluate the therapeutic action of DMAG on thrombocytopenia. Furthermore, the effects of DMAG on platelet function were evaluated by tail bleeding time, platelet aggregation and platelet adhesion assays. Next, network pharmacology approaches were carried out to identify the targets of DMAG. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed to elucidate the underling mechanism of DMAG against thrombocytopenia. Finally, molecular docking simulation, molecular dynamics simulation and western blot analysis were used to explore the relationship between DAMG with its targets. Results DMAG significantly promoted megakaryocyte differentiation of HEL cells. DMAG administration accelerated platelet recovery and megakaryopoiesis, shortened tail bleeding time, strengthened platelet aggregation and adhesion in thrombocytopenia mice. Network pharmacology revealed that ITGA2B, ITGB3, VWF, PLEK, TLR2, BCL2, BCL2L1 and TNF were the core targets of DMAG. GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses suggested that the core targets of DMAG were enriched in PI3K–Akt signaling pathway, hematopoietic cell lineage, ECM-receptor interaction and platelet activation. Molecular docking simulation and molecular dynamics simulation further indicated that ITGA2B, ITGB3, PLEK and TLR2 displayed strong binding ability with DMAG. Finally, western blot analysis evidenced that DMAG up-regulated the expression of ITGA2B, ITGB3, VWF, p-Akt and PLEK. Conclusion DMAG plays a critical role in promoting megakaryocytes differentiation and platelets production and might be a promising medicine for the treatment of thrombocytopenia. Graphical Abstract

The currently available high-power laser presents significant opportunities for welding of thick section components in single-pass. However, weld defects frequently occur and depth of penetration is usually lower than expected in this situation. In this work, a process of laser welding under reduced ambient pressure was investigated to achieve a single-pass complete-joint-penetration weld of 20 mm-thick high-strength steel. An experimental and theoretical program of investigation was undertaken to evaluate the characteristic of this welding process. The weld appearance, porosity inside the weld metal, microstructure and mechanical properties of weld joint were examined experimentally. The temperature field was calculated numerically using a 3D heat transfer and fluid flow model. A defect-free sound weld joint of 20 mm-thick plate was obtained just using an 8-kW laser power. The weld joint showed a very high aspect ratio characteristic of electron beam welding. From base metal (BM) to fusion zone (FZ) through heat-affected zone (HAZ), the microhardness varied significantly duo to their different microstructures resulted from the various peak temperatures and cooling rates for varying distances from weld center. All the tensile test samples fractured at the BM away from HAZ and FZ, which suggested that the welded metal was stronger than BM. The calculated weld geometry agreed with the corresponding experimental results through considering the role of ambient pressure. Their good agreement indicated the validity of the potential causative variables considered in the simulations. The modelling results also showed that the weld pool had a lower peak temperature and thinner liquid weld metal around keyhole under reduced ambient pressure.

In this study, we use an extension of Yang’s convergence criterion [N. Jiang, On the wavewise entropy inequality for high-resolution schemes with source terms II: the fully discrete case] to show the entropy convergence of a class of fully discrete α schemes, now with source terms, for non-homogeneous scalar convex conservation laws in the one-dimensional case. The homogeneous counterparts (HCPs) of these schemes were constructed by S. Osher and S. Chakravarthy in the mid-1980s [A New Class of High Accuracy TVD Schemes for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws (1985), Very High Order Accurate TVD Schemes (1986)], and the entropy convergence of these methods, when m=2, was settled by the author [N. Jiang, The Convergence of α Schemes for Conservation Laws II: Fully-Discrete]. For semi-discrete α schemes, with or without source terms, the entropy convergence of these schemes was previously established (for m=2) by the author [N. Jiang, The Convergence of α Schemes for Conservation Laws I: Semi-Discrete Case].

A heavy oil activator is an amphiphilic polymer solution that contains hydrophilic and oleophobic groups. It can enhance heavy oil recovery efficiency. This paper studied the changes in the distribution of the remaining oil after activator flooding and the performance of heavy oil’s active agent. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, laser confocal microscopy, microscopic visualization, and CT scanning techniques were used to analyze crude oil utilization, and the distribution characteristics of the remaining oil during activator flooding of heavy oil. The results showed that the heavy oil activator solution presented a dense spatial network and good viscosification ability. The activator could reduce the interfacial tension of oil and water, disassemble the heavy components of dispersed heavy oil and reduce the viscosity of heavy oil. The utilization degree of the remaining oil in small and middle pores increased significantly after activator flooding, the remaining oil associated with membranous-like and clusterlike structures was utilized to a high degree, and the decline of light/heavy fraction in heavy oil slowed down. Heavy oil activator improved the swept volume and displacement efficiency of heavy oil, playing a significant role in improving the extent of recovery of heavy oil reservoirs.

Due to significant electromagnetic interference, radar interruptions, and other factors, Azimuth Missing Data (AMD) may occur in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) echo, resulting in severe defocusing and even false targets. An important approach to solving this problem is to utilize Compressed Sensing (CS) methods on AMD echo to reconstruct complete echo, which can be abbreviated as the AMD Imaging Algorithm (AMDIA). However, the State-of-the-Art AMDIA (SOA-AMDIA) do not consider the influence of motion phase errors, resulting in an unacceptable estimation error of the complete echo reconstruction. Therefore, in order to enhance the practical applicability of AMDIA, this article proposes an improved AMDIA using Sparse Representation Autofocusing (SRA-AMDIA). The proposed SRA-AMDIA aims to accurately focus the imaging result, even in the Phase Error AMD (PE-AMD) echo case. Firstly, a Phase-Compensation Function (PCF) based on the phase history of the scene centroid is designed. When the PCF is multiplied with the PE-AMD echo in the range-frequency domain, a coarse-focused sparse representation signal can be obtained in the range-Doppler domain. However, due to the influence of unknown PE, the sparsity of this sparse representation signal is unsatisfying, breaking the sparse constraints requirement of the CS method. Therefore, we introduced a minimum entropy autofocusing algorithm to autofocus this sparse representation signal. Next, the estimated PE is compensated for this sparse representation signal, and a more sparse representation signal is obtained. Hence, the non-PE complete echo can be reconstructed. Finally, the estimated complete echo can be used with classic imaging algorithms to obtain high-resolution imaging results under the PE-AMD condition. Simulation and real measured data have verified the effectiveness of the proposed SRA-AMDIA.

Ambient black carbon (BC), a main constituent of atmospheric particulate matter (PM), is a primary particle that is mainly generated by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuel and biomass burning. BC has been identified as a potential health risk via exposure. However, the adverse effects of exposure to BC on the male reproductive system remain unclear. In the present study, we explored the effects of maternal exposure to oxidized black carbon (OBC) during pregnancy on testicular development and steroid synthesis in male offspring. Pregnant mice were exposed to OBC (467 μg/kg BW) or nanopure water (as control) by intratracheal instillation from gestation day (GD) 4 to GD 16.5 (every other day). We examined the testicular histology, daily sperm production, serum testosterone, and mRNA expression of hormone synthesis process-related factors of male offspring at postnatal day (PND) 35 and PND 84. Histological examinations exhibited abnormal seminiferous tubules with degenerative changes and low cellular adhesion in testes of OBC-exposed mice at PND 35 and PND 84. Consistent with the decrease in daily sperm production, the serum testosterone level of male offspring of OBC-exposed mice also decreased significantly. Correspondingly, mRNA expression levels of hormone-synthesis-related genes (i.e., StAR, P450scc, P450c17, and 17β-HSD) were markedly down-regulated in male offspring of PND 35 and PND 84, respectively. In brief, these results suggest that prenatal exposure has detrimental effects on mouse spermatogenesis in adult offspring.

Grass carp reovirus genotype Ⅱ (GCRV Ⅱ) causes a variety of fish hemorrhagic disease, which seriously affects the sustainable development of grass carp aquaculture in China. Rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) is an ideal model fish to study the pathogenesis of GCRV Ⅱ. To investigate the involved molecular responses against the GCRV Ⅱ infection, we performed comparative transcriptomic analysis in the spleen and liver of rare minnow injected with virulent strain DY197 and attenuated strain QJ205. Results showed that the virulent DY197 strain induced more differently expressed genes (DEGs) than the attenuated QJ205 strain, and tissue-specific responses were induced. In the spleen, the attenuated and virulent strains induced different DEGs; the attenuated QJ205 infection activated steroid synthesis pathway that involved in membrane formation; however, virulent DY197 infection activated innate immunity and apoptosis related pathways while suppressing cell proliferation and migration related pathways that are important for damage tissue repair, as well as hemorrhage related pathways. In the liver, the attenuated and virulent strains infection induced similar DEGs; both strains infection activated immunity and apoptosis related pathways but suppressed metabolism-related pathways; virulent DY197 infection especially activated protein digestion and absorption-related pathways and suppressed steroid synthesis pathway. To conclude, virulent strain infection especially induced tissue-specific alterations and caused severe suppression of hemorrhage-related pathways in spleen. Our findings will contribute to better understanding of the interactions between host and GCRV II.

Infectious bursal disease (IBD) is an acute, highly contagious, immunosuppressive, and fatal infectious disease of young chickens caused by infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). Since 2017, a new trend has been discovered in the IBDV epidemic, with very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV) and novel variant IBDV (nVarIBDV) becoming the two current dominant strains in East Asia including China. In this study, we compared the biological characteristics of the vvIBDV (HLJ0504 strain), nVarIBDV (SHG19 strain), and attenuated IBDV (attIBDV, Gt strain) using specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chicken infection model. The results showed that vvIBDV distributed in multiple tissues, replicated the fastest in lymphoid organs such as bursa of Fabricius, induced significant viremia and virus excretion, and is the most pathogenic virus with a mortality of more than 80%. The nVarIBDV had a weaker replication capability and did not kill the chickens but caused severe damage to the central immune organ bursa of Fabricius and B lymphocytes and induced significant viremia and virus excretion. The attIBDV strain was found not to be pathogenic. Further studies preliminarily suggested that the expression level of inflammatory factors triggered by HLJ0504 was the highest, followed by the SHG19 group. This study is the first to systematically compare the pathogenic characteristics of three IBDVs closely related to poultry industry from the perspectives of clinical signs, micro-pathology, virus replication, and distribution. It is of great importance to obtain an extensive knowledge of epidemiology, pathogenicity, and comprehensive prevention, and control of various IBDV strains.

Aeromonas veronii is widespread in aquatic environments and is capable of infecting various aquatic organisms. A. veronii infection is lethal for Chinese soft-shelled turtles (Trionyx sinensis, CSST). We isolated a gram-negative bacterium from the liver of diseased CSSTs, which was named XC-1908. This isolate was identified as A. veronii based on its morphological and biochemical characteristics, and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. A. veronii was pathogenic for CSSTs with an LD50 of 4.17 × 105 CFU/g. The symptoms of CSSTs artificially infected with isolate XC-1908 were consistent with those of the naturally infected CSSTs. The levels of total protein, albumin, and white globule in the serum samples of the diseased turtles were decreased, whereas those of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase were elevated. Moreover, the diseased CSSTs exhibited the following histopathological changes: the liver contained numerous melanomacrophage centers, renal glomerulus were edematous, intestinal villi were shed, and in oocytes, the number of vacuoles increased and red-rounded particles were observed. Antibiotic sensitivity tests revealed that the bacterium was sensitive to ceftriaxone, doxycycline, florfenicol, cefradine, and gentamicin, and resistant to sulfanilamide, carbenicillin, benzathine, clindamycin, erythromycin, and streptomycin. This study provides control strategies to prevent outbreaks of A. veronii infection in CSSTs.

During the early growth stage of plants, low temperatures can alter cell permeability, reduce photosynthetic capacity, and have adverse effects on crop growth, development, and yield. Different strawberry cultivars have varying cold tolerance. In this study, we investigated the changes in cell permeability and photosynthetic activity of short-day and long-day types of strawberry cultivars under varying degrees of low-temperature stress, and evaluated the extent of cellular damage using photosynthetic and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. The experiment utilized short-day strawberry cultivars ‘Toyonoka’ and ‘Red Face’, and long-day strawberry cultivars ‘Selva’ and ‘Sweet Charlie’ seedlings. Low-temperature treatments were set at −20, −15, −10, −5, 0, 5, and 10 °C for 12 h. The research demonstrated that short-day strawberries had greater tolerance to low temperatures, and all four strawberry cultivars began to experience low-temperature stress when the temperature was below 5 °C. A temperature range of 0 to −10 °C played a crucial role in causing severe cold damage to the strawberries. The low-temperature stress levels were constructed based on electrolyte leakage, with photosynthetic physiological characteristics serving as references. The study proves that the photosynthetic and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters can serve as effective probes for diagnosing low-temperature stress in strawberry seedlings, and their combination provides higher accuracy in identifying stress levels than any single type of parameter.

Chiral substances occur naturally in abiotic and living systems. The recognition and detection of chiral substances in the natural environment or their analysis and detection in biological systems are crucial. Chiral recognition is a research hotspot in clinical medicine, pharmacology, biochemistry, and other fields. Indeed, many researchers have developed various sensors with different functionalized materials for detecting and analyzing enantiomers. Supramolecular systems have important applications in the development of molecular recognition technologies, and the development of supramolecular chemistry is closely related to research on molecular devices. Therefore, this review summarizes the principle of chiral supramolecular sensors for the detection of enantiomers from the perspective of various sensor types, including optical, electrochemical, electrochemical luminescence, photoelectric, and supramolecular chemical sensors. This review also summarizes the relevant reports on chiral supramolecular sensors in the last five years. Finally, we highlight the prospects of supramolecular chiral sensors in future research.

Due to the substantial electromagnetic interference, radar interruptions, and other factors, the SAR system may fail to receive valid data in some azimuth areas. This phenomenon is known as Azimuth Missing Data (AMD). If classical SAR imaging algorithms are performed directly using AMD echo, the imaging results may be defocused or even display false targets, which seriously affects the accuracy of the image. Thus, we proposed a Sub-echo Segmentation and Reconstruction Azimuth Missing Data SAR Imaging Algorithm (SSR-AMDIA) to solve the problem of incomplete echo SAR imaging in this article. Instead of using the motion compensation step of the Polar Format algorithm (PFA) to recover the full echo from the AMD echo, the proposed SSR-AMDIA eliminates the effect of the planar approximation in PFA and expands the maximum depth of focus (DOF). The raw AMD echo was first subjected to range compression and Range Cell Migration Correction (RCMC), after which the AMD-RCMC echo was divided along the range direction. Then, we constructed a series of phase compensation functions based on the sub-segment AMD-RCMC echoes to guarantee the perfect recovery of the full RCMC echoes corresponding to the sub-scenes. Finally, we combined them to obtain the complete RCMC echo, and an excellent focused imaging result was then obtained via azimuth compression. Simulation and experimental data verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, we derived the mathematical expressions for the two-dimensional maximum DOFs of the proposed algorithm. In contrast to the State-Of-the-Art (SOA) AMDIA, the SSR-AMDIA can obtain a superior imaging performance in a larger imaging scope under the conditions of most AMD cases.

The subtropical forests in China play a pivotal part in the global and regional carbon–water cycle and in regulating the climate. Ecosystem water-use efficiency (WUE) is a crucial index for understanding the trade-off between ecosystem carbon gain and water consumption. However, the underlying mechanisms of the WUE in forest ecosystems, especially the different subtropical forests, have remained unclear. In this paper, we developed a simple framework for estimating forest WUE and revealing the underlying mechanisms of forest WUE changes via a series of numerical experiments. Validated by measured WUE, the simulated WUE from our developed WUE framework showed a good performance. In addition, we found that the subtropical forest WUE experienced a significant increasing trend during 2001–2018, especially in evergreen and deciduous broadleaf forests where the increasing rate was greatest (0.027 gC kg−1 H2O year−1, p < 0.001). Further analysis indicated that the atmospheric CO2 concentration and vapor pressure deficits (VPD), rather than leaf area index (LAI), were the dominant drivers leading to the subtropical forest WUE changes. When summed for the whole subtropical forests, CO2 and VPD had an almost equal spatial impact on annual WUE change trends and accounted for 45.3% and 49.1% of the whole study area, respectively. This suggests that future forest management aiming to increase forest carbon uptake and protect water resources needs to pay more attention to the long-term impacts of climate change on forest WUE.

An enhanced Doppler resolution and sidelobe suppression have long been practical issues for moving target detection using Golay complementary waveforms. In this paper, Golay complementary waveform radar returns are combined with a proposed processor, the pointwise thresholding processor (PTP). Compared to the pointwise minimization processor (PMP) illustrated in a previous work, which could only achieve a Doppler resolution comparable to existing methods, this approach essentially increases the Doppler resolution to a very high level in theory. This study also introduced a further filtering process for the delay-Doppler map of the PTP, and simulations verified that the method results in a delay-Doppler map virtually free of range sidelobes.

Abstract More than 90% of surgical patients develop postoperative adhesions, and the incidence of hospital re-admissions can be as high as 20%. Current adhesion barriers present limited efficacy due to difficulties in application and incompatibility with minimally invasive interventions. To solve this clinical limitation, we developed an injectable and sprayable shear-thinning hydrogel barrier (STHB) composed of silicate nanoplatelets and poly(ethylene oxide). We optimized this technology to recover mechanical integrity after stress, enabling its delivery though injectable and sprayable methods. We also demonstrated limited cell adhesion and cytotoxicity to STHB compositions in vitro. The STHB was then tested in a rodent model of peritoneal injury to determine its efficacy preventing the formation of postoperative adhesions. After two weeks, the peritoneal adhesion index was used as a scoring method to determine the formation of postoperative adhesions, and STHB formulations presented superior efficacy compared to a commercially available adhesion barrier. Histological and immunohistochemical examination showed reduced adhesion formation and minimal immune infiltration in STHB formulations. Our technology demonstrated increased efficacy, ease of use in complex anatomies, and compatibility with different delivery methods, providing a robust universal platform to prevent postoperative adhesions in a wide range of surgical interventions.

Abstract Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-induced endothelial cell dysfunction is a significant event in the progression of atherosclerosis. Even Myricetin (Myr) has been exhibited strong antioxidant potency, the effect on atherosclerosis is still elusive. HUVECs were subjected to ox-LDL, before which cells were preconditioned with Myr. Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, flow cytometry, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot were carried out to assess the impacts of ox-LDL and Myr on HUVECs. The expression of EndMT markers was determined by Western blot analysis and immunocytochemistry. In addition, the relationship of GAS5 and miR-29a-3p was evaluated by RNA Fluorescent in Situ Hybridization and RNA immunoprecipitation assay. Myr preconditioning prevented ox-LDL-induced apoptosis, inflammatory response, and EndMT. GAS5 was upregulated in response to ox-LDL while it was down-regulated by Myr preconditioning. GAS5 over-expression attenuates Myr protective effects against ox-LDL–mediated HUVEC injury. Besides, miR-29a-3p is a target of GAS5 and down-regulated miR-29a-3p could further reduce the effects of GAS5 in ox-LDL–mediated HUVEC. Furthermore, Myr inactivated the TLR4/NF-κB signalling pathway in ox-LDL-treated HUVEC by down-regulating GAS5 or upregulating miR-26a-5p. Myr possessed an anti-inflammatory and anti-EndMT function against ox-LDL-induced HUVEC injury by regulating the GAS5/miR-29a-3p, indicating that Myr may have an important therapeutic function for atherosclerosis.

The present work investigates the thermally controlled deformation characteristics in temperature-sensitive hydrogels bilayers. The free energy density for temperature-sensitive hydrogels is modified, upon which the finite element model is developed and implemented through user-defined material subroutine UHYPER in the commercial software ABAQUS. The modified UHYPER implementation allows for more vividly depicting the continuous deformation in phase temperature region for temperature-sensitive hydrogels. Several thermally controlled cases of temperature-sensitive hydrogel including grippers, self-folding boxes, thermally driven origami are presented to illustrate a wide array of complex interesting applications or phenomena. Furthermore, we develop a simple model to theoretically calculate the bending angle of the temperature-sensitive hydrogel bilayers, which has been validated by the finite element simulation results. Our study can provide more insights for optimal design in thermally controlled hydrogels structures.

Abstract Objectives This study aims to explore the prevalence of sexual satisfaction among Chinese cancer survivors, and explore the association of sexual satisfaction with comorbidity and lifestyle factors. Methods A cross‐sectional study was performed among 3996 Chinese cancer survivors recruited at Shanghai Cancer Rehabilitation Club from March to April 2017. Data were collected through self‐reported questionnaires. The questionnaire includes information about demographic, cancer characteristics, comorbidities, lifestyle factors, and sexual satisfaction. Sexual satisfaction was measured by a single‐item scale. The distribution of sexual satisfaction among different demographic and cancer characteristics was compared using the chi‐squared test. Logistic regression models were conducted to assess the effects of lifestyle factors, comorbidities on sexual satisfaction after adjustment for demographic and cancer characteristics. Results More than 40% of male and female cancer survivors reported no sexual satisfaction. Sexual satisfaction of cancer survivors is significantly associated with both the number and the type of comorbidities. Heart disease, musculoskeletal system disease, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia are the comorbidities significantly associated with sexual satisfaction of cancer survivors. Lifestyle factors other than smoking, including exercise or fitness, drinking alcohol, and eating fruits and vegetables are significantly correlated with sexual satisfaction. Besides, all of the above associations show gender differences. In addition, demographic characteristics include sex, age, marital status, living status, and average monthly income are also significantly associated with sexual satisfaction of cancer survivors. Conclusion Comorbidity and lifestyle factors are associated with sexual satisfaction of cancer survivors, and the associations show gender differences. Improving the lifestyles of cancer survivors, and controlling and reducing their comorbidities are important for improving their sexual satisfaction.

Abstract On‐body propagation channels show significant polarization selectivity that has dominant impacts on the on‐body link quality in wireless body area networks. For on‐body relay channels over long distances across the body, the antenna polarization configurations of the relaying nodes are crucial to determine the relay performance, thereby requiring polarization optimization schemes. In this article, narrow band flat‐fading on‐body channels at 2.484 GHz are measured to analyse their polarization distribution above the skin under static postures. The measured on‐body channels show full‐space polarization convergence and dispersion, which are modelled by an extended 3 by 3 channel polarization matrix, and a statistical channel model is also proposed. Multi‐hop polarized on‐body relay channels are analysed on the relay link capacity, which shows polarization dependency between adjacent hop channels when relaying nodes are mounted by linearly polarized antennas. Both regular and iterative polarization selection algorithms are then designed to optimise the antenna polarization configuration of the nodes. Simulations based on the proposed polarization distribution model show significant link capacity increases for two‐hop and tfhree‐hop on‐body relay channels by the optimization algorithms. The results confirm the necessity of proper polarization selection schemes for on‐body relay channels.

Abstract The origin and evolution of biodiversity in the Shennongjia and Wushan Mountains, located in central China, are little known. In this study, we used Ourapteryx szechuana, which is widely distributed in China and northern Nepal, to explore whether these mountains acted as glacial refugia during climate oscillations of the Quaternary. In total, 192 samples of O. szechuana were collected throughout much of the distribution range. Phylogenetic analysis, molecular dating, demographic history reconstructions, and MAXENT were used to investigate the evolutionary history and differentiation mechanisms and predict the potential species distributions during four different periods. The phylogenetic tree and the star‐like median‐joining network strongly supported two reciprocally monophyletic and allopatric lineages. Lineage I was restricted to the Shennongjia and Wushan Mountains. The divergence time of O. szechuana from its sister species O. thibetaria was approximately 1.94 Ma. The differentiation processes of the two intraspecific lineages occurred at approximately 0.47 Ma. The demographic history reconstruction and the ecological niche model suggested that Lineage II experienced an expansion after the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum), whereas Lineage I did not experience any expansion. Our results suggested the Naynayxungla glaciation promoted the divergence of the two lineages by restricting them to different refugia. The valleys of the Shennongjia–Wushan Mountains may have kept stable and warm (thus ice‐free) environments during Quaternary glaciations, allowing this region to act as a glacial refugia. Our studies show that the Shennongjia and Wushan Mountains are likely to be important but little studied glacial refugia for the insect and thus worthy of more attention.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has aroused considerable interest over the past years as an important biomass-derived platform molecule, yielding various value-added products. The conventional HMF conversion requires noble metal catalysts and harsh operating conditions. On the other hand, the electrocatalytic conversion of HMF has been considered as an environmentally benign alternative. However, its practical application is limited by low overall energy efficiency and incomplete conversion. Paired electrolysis and highly efficient electrocatalysts are two viable strategies to address these limitations. Herein, an overview of coupled electrocatalytic HMF hydrogenation or hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with HMF oxidation as well as the associated electrocatalysts are reviewed and discussed. In this mini-review, a brief introduction of electrocatalytic HMF upgrading is given, followed by the recent advances and challenges of paired electrolysis with an emphasis on the integration HMF electrohydrogenation with HMF electrooxidation. Finally, a perspective for a future sustainable biomass upgrading community based on electrocatalysis is proposed.

The liver has unique regeneration potential, which ensures the continuous dependence of the human body on hepatic functions. As the composition and function of gut microbiota has been gradually elucidated, the vital role of gut microbiota in liver regeneration through gut-liver axis has recently been accepted. In the process of liver regeneration, gut microbiota composition is changed. Moreover, gut microbiota can contribute to the regulation of the liver immune microenvironment, thereby modulating the release of inflammatory factors including IL-6, TNF-α, HGF, IFN-γ and TGF-β, which involve in different phases of liver regeneration. And previous research have demonstrated that through enterohepatic circulation, bile acids (BAs), lipopolysaccharide, short-chain fatty acids and other metabolites of gut microbiota associate with liver and may promote liver regeneration through various pathways. In this perspective, by summarizing gut microbiota-derived signaling pathways that promote liver regeneration, we unveil the role of gut microbiota in liver regeneration and provide feasible strategies to promote liver regeneration by altering gut microbiota composition.

BackgroundAdenomyosis is a common gynecological disease in women. A relevant literature search found that approximately 82% of patients with adenomyosis chose to undergo hysterectomy. However, women of childbearing age are more likely to undergo surgery to preserve the uterus. Because it is difficult to determine the extent of adenomyosis, it is almost impossible to resect adenomyotic tissue and retain the uterus at the same time.Materials and methodsFollowing ethics approval and patient consent, tissue samples were resected and prepared to create frozen slices for analysis. One slice was subjected to H&E staining while the remaining slices were photographed with Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS), Second-Harmonic Generation (SHG) microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Comparative observations and analyses at the same positions were carried out to explore the diagnostic ability of CARS, SHG, and Raman spectroscopy for adenomyosis.ResultsIn adenomyotic tissue, we found two characteristic peaks at 1,155 and 1,519 cm–1 in the Raman spectrum, which were significantly different from normal tissue. The substances shown in the CARS spectrum were represented by peaks of 1,519 cm–1. SHG microscopy showed a distribution of collagen at the focus of the adenomyosis.ConclusionThis study represents a novel analysis of Raman microscopy, CARS, and SHG in the analysis of adenomyotic lesions. We found the diffraction spectrum useful in determining the focal boundary and the diagnosis of adenomyosis in the tested samples.

Abstract Background Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTCD) is a genetic metabolic disease. Its clinical manifestations are mainly central nervous system dysfunction caused by high blood ammonia. Late‐onset OTCD combined with central nervous system injury has a poor therapeutic response, which is one of the main factors affecting the prognosis and quality of life of patients. liver transplantation (LT) has gradually become a radical treatment for OTCD, which has achieved good results. However, there is no consensus on the timing of LT and problems of nervous system damage and repair. Methods We report the development of late‐onset OTCD with central nervous system injury in an 11‐year‐old child who received liver transplantation at our transplant center. His first symptoms were nonprojectile vomiting, followed by irritability and disturbance of consciousness, after which the disease progressed rapidly and finally resulted in a coma. After liver transplantation, the child's consciousness returned to normal, muscle strength of the limbs gradually recovered from grade 0 to grade 4, and muscle tone gradually recovered from grade 4 to grade 1, suggesting that the motor nerves had gradually recovered. However, the child is currently mentally retarded, and the language center has not yet fully recovered.At the same time, we made a literature review of OTCD. Conclusion For OTCD patients with central nervous system injury, liver transplantation can fundamentally solve the problem of ammonia metabolism in the liver and avoids further damage to the central nervous system caused by hyperammonemia. At the same time, children's nervous systems are in the developmental stage when neuroplasticity is greatest. If liver transplantation is performed as soon as possible, nerve repair is still possible.

ObjectivesTo understand the current status of smoking behavior among emergency physicians in China and to explore its determinants.BackgroundThe emergency department is considered a more appropriate setting for tobacco interventions. However, the smoking behavior of emergency physicians can reduce the effectiveness of interventions for patient smoking behavior.MethodsFrom July to August 2018, we conducted a structured online questionnaire among Chinese emergency medicine physicians. We used descriptive analysis with binary logistic regression to analyze the current smoking status of Chinese emergency physicians and its determinants.ResultsA total of 10,457 emergency physicians were included in this study. The prevalence of smoking among physicians was 25.35% (with 34.15 and 1.59% among male and female physicians, respectively). Results of logistic regression showed that postgraduate education (OR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.41–0.66), chief-level title (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.65–0.97), and regular exercise habits (OR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.76–0.92) were associated with a lower risk of smoking behavior. However, being over 50 years old (OR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.29–2.27), being fixed-term (OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.10–1.42), and having depressive symptoms (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.28–1.61) were associated with a higher risk of smoking.ConclusionThe prevalence of smoking behavior among emergency physicians in China is high. Hospital management could reduce the incidence of smoking behavior among emergency physicians by strengthening smoking cessation training, paying attention to physicians' psychological health, reducing pressure on physicians in fixed-term positions, and encouraging physicians to develop regular exercise habits.

The semiconductors, such as TiO2, CdS, ZnO, BiVO4, graphene, produce good applications in photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production, and great progress have been made in the synthesis and modification of the materials. As a two-dimensional layered structure material, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), with the unique properties of high thermostability and chemical inertness, excellent semiconductive ability, affords good potential in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. However, the related low efficiency of g-C3N4 with fast recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers, limited visible-light absorption, and low surface area of prepared bulk g-C3N4, has called out the challenge issues to synthesize and modify novel g-C3N4-block photocatalyst. In this review, we have summarized several strategies to improve the photocatalytic performance of pristine g-C3N4 such as pH, morphology control, doping with metal or non-metal elements, metal deposition, constructing a heterojunction or homojunction, dye-sensitization, and so forth. The performances for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and possible development of g-C3N4 materials are shared with the researchers interested in the relevant fields hereinto.

The grassland in the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau provide habitat for many indigenous and introduced ruminants which perform important ecological functions that impact the whole Qinghai–Tibetan plateau ecosystem. These indigenous Tibetan ruminants have evolved several adaptive traits to withstand the severe environmental conditions, especially cold, low oxygen partial pressure, high altitude, strong UV radiation, and poor forage availability on the alpine rangelands. Despite the challenges to husbandry associated with the need for enhanced adaptation, several domesticated ruminants have also been successfully introduced to the alpine pasture regions to survive in the harsh environment. For ruminants, these challenging conditions affect not only the host, but also their commensal microbiota, especially the diversity and composition of the rumen microbiota; multiple studies have described tripartite interactions among host-environment-rumen microbiota. Thus, there are significant benefits to understanding the role of rumen microbiota in the indigenous and introduced ruminants of the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau, which has co-evolved with the host to ensure the availability of specific metabolic functions required for host survival, health, growth, and development. In this report, we systemically reviewed the dynamics of rumen microbiota in both indigenous and introduced ruminants (including gut microbiota of wild ruminants) as well as their structure, functions, and interactions with changing environmental conditions, especially low food availability, that enable survival at high altitudes. We summarized that three predominant driving factors including increased VFA production, enhanced fiber degradation, and lower methane production as indicators of higher efficiency energy harvest and nutrient utilization by microbiota that can sustain the host during nutrient deficit. These cumulative studies suggested alteration of rumen microbiota structure and functional taxa with genes that encode cellulolytic enzymes to potentially enhance nutrient and energy harvesting in response to low quality and quantity forage and cold environment. Future progress toward understanding ruminant adaptation to high altitudes will require the integration of phenotypic data with multi-omics analyses to identify host-microbiota co-evolutionary adaptations enabling survival on the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease and has become a serious medical issue globally. Although it is known to be associated with glomerular injury, tubular injury has been found to participate in DN in recent years. However, mechanisms of diabetic renal tubular injury remain unclear. Here, we investigated the differentially expressed genes in the renal tubules of patients with DN by analyzing three RNA-seq datasets downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Gene set enrichment analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis showed that DN is highly correlated with the immune system. The immune-related gene SERPINA3 was screened out with lasso regression and Kaplan–Meier survival analyses. Considering that SERPINA3 is an inhibitor of mast cell chymase, we examined the expression level of SERPINA3 and chymase in human renal tubular biopsies and found that SERPINA3 was upregulated in DN tubules, which is consistent with the results of the differential expression analysis. Besides, the infiltration and degranulation rates of mast cells are augmented in DN. By summarizing the biological function of SERPINA3, chymase, and mast cells in DN based on our results and those of previous studies, we speculated that SERPINA3 is a protective immune-related molecule that prevents renal tubular injury by inhibiting the proliferation and activation of mast cells and downregulating the activity of chymase.

BackgroundThis study aimed to define changes in the metabolic and protein profiles of patients with calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD).Methods and resultsWe analyzed cardiac valve samples of patients with and without (control) CAVD (n = 24 per group) using untargeted metabolomics and tandem mass tag-based quantitative proteomics. Significantly different metabolites and proteins between the CAVD and control groups were screened; then, functional enrichment was analyzed. We analyzed co-expressed differential metabolites and proteins, and constructed a metabolite-protein-pathway network. The expression of key proteins was validated using western blotting. Differential analysis identified 229 metabolites in CAVD among which, 2-aminophenol, hydroxykynurenine, erythritol, carnosine, and choline were the top five. Proteomic analysis identified 549 differentially expressed proteins in CAVD, most of which were localized in the nuclear, cytoplasmic, extracellular, and plasma membranes. Levels of selenium binding protein 1 (SELENBP1) positively correlated with multiple metabolites. Adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette transporters, starch and sucrose metabolism, hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) signaling, and purine metabolism were key pathways in the network. Ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1), calcium2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II delta (CAMK2D), and ATP binding cassette subfamily a member 8 (ABCA8) were identified as hub proteins in the metabolite-protein-pathway network as they interacted with ADP, glucose 6-phosphate, choline, and other proteins. Western blotting confirmed that ENPP1 was upregulated, whereas ABCA8 and CAMK2D were downregulated in CAVD samples.ConclusionThe metabolic and protein profiles of cardiac valves from patients with CAVD significantly changed. The present findings provide a holistic view of the molecular mechanisms underlying CAVD that may lead to the development of novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets to treat CAVD.

Hybrid sturgeon is the main species of sturgeon cultured in China, with the advantages of a fast growth rate, early sexual maturity, fertile offspring, and more stable genetic traits. In May 2021, a large number of deaths characterized by superficial hemorrhage and liver damage occurred in a sturgeon farm in Yichang, Hubei Province, which posed a significant risk to hybrid sturgeon captive breeding. We isolated a pathogenic bacterium named D-59 from the diseased sturgeon with apparent symptoms. The pathogen was identified as Staphylococcus sciuri using 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic analysis combined with biochemical identification. Regression experiments showed that D-59 exhibited clinical signs similar to those of diseased sturgeon in the farm after intraperitoneal injection into hybrid sturgeon. High-throughput sequencing of gut microbes in D-59-infected sturgeon showed that the number of gut microbial species decreased in infected sturgeon, the number of some intestinal commensal bacteria decreased, and the balance of the intestinal microorganisms was disrupted. Histopathological sections indicated many inflammatory cells, congestion, and even necrosis in the tissue of diseased sturgeon. Analysis of blood indexes revealed an increase in the proportion of mononuclear cells and a decrease in the proportion of lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of diseased sturgeon. Significantly elevated serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, whereas alkaline phosphatase, total protein, albumin, and globulin were decreased in diseased sturgeon. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests demonstrated that D-59 is susceptible to florfenicol, enrofloxacin, and neomycin sulfate. This study aimed to highlight the dangers of Staphylococcus sciuri infection during hybrid sturgeon culture and to provide recommendations for diagnosis and treatment.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a prevalent arteriosclerotic vascular disease that forms a pathological basis for coronary heart disease, stroke, and other diseases. Inflammatory and oxidative stress responses occur throughout the development of AS. Treatment for AS over the past few decades has focused on administering high-intensity statins to reduce blood lipid levels, but these inevitably damage liver and kidney function over the long term. Natural medicines are widely used to prevent and treat AS in China because of their wide range of beneficial effects, low toxicity, and minimal side effects. We searched for relevant literature over the past 5 years in databases such as PubMed using the keywords, “atherosclerosis,” “traditional Chinese medicine,” “natural medicines,” “inflammation,” and “oxidative stress.” We found that the PI3K/AKT, TLR4, JAK/STAT, Nrf2, MAPK, and NF-κB are the most relevant inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways in AS. This review summarizes studies of the natural alkaloid, flavonoid, polyphenol, saponin, and quinone pathways through which natural medicines used to treat AS. This study aimed to update and summarize progress in understanding how natural medicines treat AS via inflammatory and oxidative stress-related signaling pathways. We also planned to create an information base for the development of novel drugs for future AS treatment.

Background and purpose: Identification of pathogens causing fracture-device-related infection (FDRI) is always a challenge as the positive rate of standard tissue sampling culture (TSC) remains unsatisfactory. This study evaluates the efficiency of implant surface culture (ISC) as an adjunct to standard TSC for identification of FDRI-associated microorganisms. Patients and methods: Between November 2020 and March 2022, patients diagnosed with FDRI defined by the International Fracture-Related Infection (FRI) Consensus Group, and indicated for implant removal, underwent both methods for bacteria detection. The test order of ISC and TSC was randomly selected for each patient included, as a within-person randomized design. For ISC, the recovered implants were gently covered with tryptic soy agar after rinsing with normal saline twice, and then incubated at 37℃ 5% CO2 for up to 14 days. For TSC, 5 specimens were sampled and sent to the Clinical Laboratory of Southern Medical University Nanfang Hospital, Guangzhou, for culture and identification. Results: 42 consecutive patients were included, with a mean age of 46 years. The most frequent infection site and implant type were the tibia (21 cases) and plates with screws (30 cases), respectively. Altogether 21 patients were found with positive outcomes by both methods, and the identified pathogens were consistent. ISC found an additional 15 patients showing positive results, which were negative by TSC. Furthermore, the mean culture time of ISC was shorter than that of TSC (1.5 days vs. 3.2 days). Interpretation: ISC may be a useful adjunct to TSC for detection of bacteria causing FDRI, with a relatively higher positive rate and a shorter culture time.

BackgroundStroke, including ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke, possesses complex pathological mechanisms such as neuroinflammation, oxidative stress and blood-brain barrier damage. Astrocyte functions have been reported during injury, neuroprotection and cell crosstalk. It plays a key role in exacerbating stroke injury, promoting neurological repair and enhancing neuroregeneration.AimThis holistic bibliometric analysis aimed to provide a general overview of the recent advancement and the hotspots in the field of stroke and astrocyte from 2001 to 2021.Materials and methodsPublications between 2001 and 2021, related to stroke and astrocyte were retrieved from the Web of Science (WOS) and analyzed in Gephi and VOSviewer.ResultsIn total, 3789 documents were extracted from the WOS databases. The publications showed stable growth since 2001. The United States and China were the most prolific countries and University of California San Francisco and Oakland University were the most influential institutes. The top four most productive journals were Brain Research, Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, Glia and Journal of Neuroinflammation. Keywords frequency and co-occurrence analysis revealed that the topics related to “micro-RNA”, “toll like receptor”, “neuroinflammation”, “autophagy” and “interleukin” were research frontiers. The field of stroke and astrocyte focused on several aspects, such as the role of astrocytes in the treatment of stroke, metabolic changes in astrocytes, the protective role of apoptosis in astrocytes after oxidative stress injury and neurovascular units.ConclusionThis comprehensive bibliometric study provides an updated perspective on the trend of research associated with stroke and astrocyte. It will benefit scientific community to identify the important issues, future directions and provide a novel understanding of stroke pathophysiology, hotspots and frontiers to facilitate future research direction.

Background This study aims to investigate whether a systematic digital training system can improve the learning efficiency of residents in the first-year orthognathic surgery training course and evaluate its effectiveness in teaching orthognathic surgery. Methods A digital training system was applied, and a comparative research approach was adopted. 24 first-year orthognathic surgery residents participated in the experiment as part of their professional skill training. The Experimental group was required to use a digital training system, and the Control group was trained in lectures without digital technologies. Three indicators, including theoretical knowledge and clinical operation, were assessed in tests, and evaluations from instructors were analyzed to evaluate learning efficiency. Results The results showed that the scores in theoretical tests, practical operations, and teacher evaluations, the Experimental groups were all higher than the Control group (P = 0.002 for anatomy, P = 0.000 for operation theory) after using digital technology, except for the understanding of complications (P = 0.771). In addition, the questionnaire survey results showed that the study interest (P = 0.001), self-confidence (P = 0.001), satisfaction (P = 0.002), and academic performance (P = 0.001) of the residents of the Experimental group were higher than those of the Control group. Conclusions The outcomes indicated that the digital training system could benefit orthognathic residents’ learning efficiency, and learning interest and teaching satisfaction will also improve.

Marine floating raft aquaculture forms an integral component of the monitoring of coastal marine environments. It is essential to accurately obtain the spatial distribution of marine floating raft aquaculture to gain the fullest understanding of the development of marine fishery production, optimization of the spatial layout of aquaculture, and protection of the marine environment. The Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) is used to acquire optical imagery at a high spatial and temporal resolution, sampling 13 spectral bands in the visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared parts of the spectrum. This research reports how a decision-tree-based procedure was developed to map marine floating raft aquaculture using Sentinel-2A MSI imagery and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data. Three indices and spectral features were used in this algorithm to differentiate marine floating rafts from other land-cover and land-use types in Fangchenggang City, China. These included the Differential Ratio Floating Raft Index (DRRI), newly proposed in the paper, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and visible reflectance. Additionally, a comparison was made between the decision tree classification method (DT) and the random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) methods. The results demonstrate that these three methods can obtain raft information with high accuracy. Finally, the classification results were merged into aquaculture rafts and non-aquaculture rafts. The overall accuracy for DT was 98.20% and 1.28 and 4.99 percentage points higher than RF and SVM, respectively. The user accuracy for marine floating rafts for DT (98.25%) was also markedly higher than that of RF and SVM methods (93.97% and 86.50%, respectively). The producer accuracy for marine floating rafts through the DT method was 98.17%, 0.81 percent lower than that of RF, and 1.03 percent lower than that of SVM. The decision-tree method does not assume strict data distribution parameters, optimization of the application of multispectral imagery and elevation data becomes possible, and combing with the DRRI index, then results in higher classification accuracies of marine floating rafts. When using multi-source data of different types and distributions to map marine floating rafts, a decision-tree method, therefore, appears to be superior to RF and SVM classifiers.

BackgroundCervical cancer has become a worldwide concern owing to its high incidence and mortality rates. To date, high-altitude areas of Tibet have not benefited from any large-scale cervical cancer screening programs. Therefore, we initiated a screening program to investigate the prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) and HPV genotype distribution to reveal cervical cancer and its precursor which lead to morbidity among women in the city of Nagqu in northern Tib3et.MethodsA total of 25,173 women were recruited to undergo HPV genotype tests between June and December 2019. Women infected with HPV 16 and/or 18 underwent colposcopy and histological examination. Women with other high-risk HPV type (hr-HPV) underwent cytological tests to determine whether to conduct further colposcopy and histological examination for diagnosis. HPV prevalence was calculated in the total population and further stratified according to various parameters, such as age group, area location (altitude level), and single or mixed infection status. The HPV genotype distribution was also investigated accordingly. Cervical lesions revealed by further colposcopic findings were also analyzed; high-grade and malignant lesion morbidities were calculated in total and in each county. Most data were collected and analyzed using descriptive and consistency check statistical methods, and a risk factor investigation for HPV infection was performed using logistic regression models.ResultsThe total HPV infection rate among women in Nagqu was 13.42%. Of the 25,173 women in the study, 999 (3.97%) were HPV 16/18 positive, 2,379 (9.45%) were other hr-HPV-positive, and 21,795 (86.58%) were HPV-negative. The five most common HPV genotypes, accounting for more than 60% of all HPV infections in Nagqu people, were HPV 16, 58, 31, 18, and 52. Tibetan women younger than 20 years and older than 60 years were the two age groups with the highest rates of HPV infection, 26.7% and 19.8%, respectively. Among the HPV-positive women, 2,656 (78.33%) were infected with a single strain and 732 (21.67%) were infected with multiple strains (more than two genotypes). HPV prevalence increased in high-altitude areas (positive rate highest in Nyima with an altitude of 5,000 m, 23.9%) and decreased in relatively low-altitude areas (positive rate lowest in Lhari with an altitude of 4,000 m, 6.6%). Multiple analyses showed that age, parity, age at first delivery, and altitude of residence were independent factors facilitating HPV infection in Tibetan women. High-grade and malignant cervical lesions revealed by histological findings were different among living locations, with the highest rates in Xainza, Baingoin, and Nyainrong, these being 2.019%, 1.820%, and 1.116%, respectively, among women in these areas.ConclusionOur survey provides an overall perspective on HPV genotype infection and cervical lesions in women in northern Tibet. The data not only provide useful information for the treatment of cervical lesions but also has great value in terms of the primary and secondary prevention measures that can be taken for women living in these regions.Clinical Trial Registrationwww.chictr.org.cn, indentifier ChiCTR2000035061.
