J Strength Cond Res37(2): 322–327, 2023—Although the combination of static stretching (SS) and foam rolling (FR) is frequently used for warm-up in sports, the effect of the intervention order is unclear. This study compared mechanical tissue properties, pain sensitivity, and motor function after SS and FR (with and without vibration) performed in different orders. Our randomized, controlled, crossover experiment included 15 healthy male subjects (22.5 ± 3.3 years) who visited the laboratory 5 times (inactive control condition, FR + SS, FRvibration+ SS, SS + FR, and SS + FRvibration) with an interval of ≥48 hours. In each session, subjects completed three 60-second bouts of FR and SS, targeting the anterior thigh. Pressure pain threshold, tissue hardness, knee flexion range of motion (ROM), maximal voluntary isometric (MVC-ISO), and concentric (MVC-CON) torque, as well as countermovement jump height, were determined before and after the intervention. All interventions significantly (p< 0.01) increased knee flexion ROM (d= 0.78, d= 0.87, d= 1.39, and d= 0.87, respectively) while decreasing tissue hardness (d= −1.25, d= −1.09, d= −1.18, and d= −1.24, respectively). However, MVC-ISO torque was significantly reduced only after FR + SS (p= 0.05, d= −0.59). Our results suggest that SS should be followed by FR when aiming to increase ROM and reduce tissue hardness without concomitant stretch-induced force deficits (MVC-ISO, MVC-CON, and countermovement jump height). Additionally, adding vibration to FR does not seem to affect the magnitude of changes observed in the examined outcomes.

Abstract

A feedforward-compensator-design technique is presented for industrial control systems. The proposed feedforward compensator can improve dynamic characteristics of multidimensional systems by modifying the input signals. The multidimensional feedforward-compensator design is based on the pole assignment regulator, the minimal-order observer, and the conversion from a closed-loop system to an open-loop system. The effectiveness of the proposed feedforward compensator is demonstrated by a simulation study of temperature control of a thermal power plant and by experiments of the contour control of an articulated robot arm. Abstract

Hot spring thermal energy conversion (STEC) is a system that converts heat energy into electricity using the temperature difference between hot spring water and sea/river water. This paper describes dynamic model construction for the transient performance of STEC plant, which uses a recently developed power cycle with binary, mixtures as working fluid. The mathematical models were constructed based on thermodynamics and structural features of the power cycle for representing the timely dependent state variables of the working fluid. Confidence in the accuracy of the developed models has been established by comparison of the simulation results with those obtained experimentally in a pilot STEC plant. [DOI: 10.1115/1.1760526]

Differential responsiveness for strength gain between limbs after resistance training in older women: Impact on interlimb asymmetry reduction. J Strength Cond Res36(11): 3209–3216, 2022—The present study compared strength responses between preferred (PREF) and nonpreferred (N-PREF) legs in older women. Muscular strength was measured unilaterally using an isokinetic dynamometer and was analyzed for reproducibility scores, acute performance, and responsiveness to a resistance training (RT) program. One hundred eleven women (aged ≥60 years) performed 12 weeks of whole-body RT (3 times a week; 4 lower-body exercises). Reproducibility scores (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥0.920; following test-retests in part of the sample at pretraining; n= 19), average acute performances, and average strength gains (PREF = ∼6.9%; N-PREF = ∼7.2%) were similar between legs (p> 0.05). However, the individual analyses showed that some subjects were considered responders to strength gains in 1 leg, whereas nonresponders in the other. Nonetheless, when considering the responses in all strength tests, most subjects (91%) were considered responder to at least 1 measure. In addition, it was observed that the strength ratio between PREF/N-PREF legs was altered for those who presented some asymmetry at baseline, as the limbs became more symmetrical in all strength measures after the RT. In conclusion, we observed that some older women may have different levels of strength between legs; however, a traditional 12-week RT program with bilateral exercises can reduce such asymmetry by inducing greater strength gains in the weaker leg.

Abstract

A new pole selection method for feedforward compensators of mechatronic servo systems is presented in this paper. It is necessary to have the system poles located at desirable positions on the s-plane in order to realize better servoing performance. However, selection of new poles is not a straightforward problem and in most industrial mechatronic systems, it has been a mere cut-and-dry procedure. In this research, feedforward compensator poles are related to the control input, and a criterion was developed to determine the desirable poles that improve the control input within its limits. This method was developed for the second-order model and it was simulated and experiments were performed with the Performer MK3s articulated industrial robot manipulator. 299. Anaerobic performance after 3-day consecutive CO2-rich cold-water immersion in physically active males.

Abstract

We investigated the effects of a 3-day consecutive CO 2 -rich cold (20 °C) water immersion (CCWI) following a high-intensity intermittent test (HIIT) on subjects' sublingual temperature (T sub), blood lactate ([La]b), and heart rate (HR) compared to cold (20 °C) tap-water immersion (CWI) or passive recovery (PAS). Thirty-two subjects were randomly allocated into three groups (CCWI, CWI, and PAS), each of which completed 4 consecutive days of cycling experiments. HR, T sub , and [La]b were recorded on each day of exercise testing (immersion from Day 1 to Day 3 and Day 4). HIIT consisted of 8 sets of 20-sec maximum exercise at an intensity of 120% of VO 2 max with 10-sec passive rest. The mean and peak power, and peak pedal repetitions (PPR) within HIIT were averaged and the decline in PPR (ΔPPR) from Day 1 to Day 4 was measured. In CCWI and CWI, HR declined significantly following each immersion, with CCWI showing the larger reduction (p < 0.001). At Day 2, CCWI showed a significantly lower [La]b compared to PAS (p < 0.01). The changes in mean and peak power from Day 1 to Day 4 did not differ among the groups (p = 0.302). ΔPPR of HIIT was significantly correlated with the HR and [La]b values after immersions (ΔPPR-HR: r2 = 0.938, p < 0.001, ΔPPR-[La]b: r2 = 0.999, p < 0.001). These findings indicate that CCWI is a promising intervention for maintaining peak performance in high-intensity intermittent exercise, which is associated with a reduction in [La]b and HR. Abstract

We investigated the acute effects of cold-water immersion (20°C) with higher CO2 concentration (CCWI) following a high-intensity Wingate anaerobic exercise test (WAnT) on subjects' sublingual temperature (Tsub), blood lactate ([La]b), heart rate (HR), and aerobic cycling work efficiency (WE) compared to cold tap-water immersion (20°C; CWI) and passive recovery (PAS). Fifteen subjects completed three testing sessions at 1-week intervals. Each trial consisted of a first WE and WAnT, and a 20-min recovery intervention (randomized: CCWI, CWI, and PAS) before repeating a second WE and WAnT. The WE was measured by the metabolic demand during 50% V.O2max exercise. HR, Tsub, and [La]b were recorded throughout the testing sessions. There was a significant decline in the WE from 1st bout to 2nd bout at each recovery intervention. The WAnT was also significantly reduced at 2nd bout. Significantly reduced [La]b was achieved at CCWI compared to PAS, but not to the CWI. Likewise, the reduction in HR following immersion was the largest at CCWI compared to the other conditions. These findings indicate that CCWI is an effective intervention for maintaining repeated cycling work efficiency, which might be associated with reduced [La]b and HR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
