- Abstract
This paper investigates the profitability of water-related investments and their diversification benefits in a portfolio context. Motivated by the need to understand whether or not water indices and water funds are desirable vehicles for investment, we analyse the performance of a major water index independently, as well as within portfolios. Our results indicate that the water asset class outperforms traditional asset classes, and has the capacity to produce diversification effects in portfolios primarily comprised of listed equity and bond assets. In addition, our study suggests that the diversification benefits of the water asset class are likely to be a result of its superior performance over the stock benchmark, rather than its low correlation with traditional asset classes. Our study provides a valuable contribution to the small, yet growing body of literature on water investments.

- Abstract
The creation of bitcoin heralded the arrival of digital or crypto-currency and has been regarded as a phenomenon. Since its introduction, it has experienced a meteoric rise in price and rapid growth accompanied by huge volatility swings, and also attracted plenty of controversies which even involved law enforcement agencies. Hence, claims abound that bitcoin has been characterized by bubbles ready to burst any time (e.g. the recent collapse of bitcoin’s biggest exchange, Mt Gox). This has earned plenty of coverage in the media but surprisingly not in the academic literature. We therefore fill this knowledge gap. We conduct an econometric investigation of the existence of bubbles in the bitcoin market based on a recently developed technique that is robust in detecting bubbles – that of Phillips et al. (2013a). Over the period 2010–2014, we detected a number of short-lived bubbles; most importantly, we found three huge bubbles in the latter part of the period 2011–2013 lasting from 66 to 106 days, with the last and biggest one being the one that ‘broke the camel’s back’ – the demise of the Mt Gox exchange.

Background: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by the abnormal expansion of a CAG triplet repeat tract in the huntingtin gene. While the length of this CAG expansion is the major determinant of the age of onset (AO), other genetic factors have also been shown to play a modulatory role. Recent evidence suggests that neuroinflammations is a pivotal factor in the pathogenesis of HD, and that targeting this process may have important therapeutic ramifications. The human β-defensin 2 (hBD2)- encoded by DEFB4- is an antimicrobial peptide that exhibits inducible expression in astrocytes during inflammation and is an important regulator of innate and adaptive immune response. Therefore, DEFB4 may contribute to the neuroinflammatory processes observed in HD. Objective: In this study we tested the hypothesis that copy number variation (CNV) of the β-defensin region, including DEFB4, modifies the AO in HD. Methods and results: We genotyped β-defensin CNV in 490 HD individuals using the paralogue ratio test and found no association between β-defensin CNV and onset of HD. Conclusions: We conclude that it is unlikely that DEFB4 plays a role in HD pathogenesis.

The effects of long-term replacement therapy of adrenal insufficiency (AI) are still a matter of controversy. In fact, the established glucocorticoid replacement regimens do not completely reproduce the endogenous hormonal production and the monitoring of AI treatment may be a challenge for the lack of reliable clinical and biochemical markers. Consequently, several AI patients are frequently exposed to relative glucocorticoid excess potentially leading to develop chronic complications, such as diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension and fragility fractures with consequent impaired QoL and increased mortality risk. This review deals with the pathophysiological and clinical aspects concerning the over-replacement therapy of primary and secondary AI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Western Mediterranean ,rollback ,subduction ,S-wave velocity ,backarc basin - Abstract
The western Mediterranean is the backarc basin of the Apennines-Maghrebides subduction, which retreated from west to east since Oligocene to present times. The slab transported into the mantle different segments of the oceanic and transitional continental lithosphere, previously stretched during the Mesozoic Tethys realm. The widest extension in the Mediterranean backarc basin occurred where the thinned, possibly oceanic lithosphere was present in the foreland, i.e., the present Ionian basin. The stretching in the Western Mediterranean backarc generated lithospheric boudins as the Corsica-Sardinia microplate. The stretching was asymmetric, being the roots of the boudins shifted eastward relative to the shallow section of the continental lithosphere. The "eastward" rejuvenation of the Western Mediterranean sub-basins, the eastward migration of the slab retreat, and the related magmatism and foredeep depocenters, they all support an eastward sub-lithospheric relative flow of the mantle. The slab retreat and the related backarc extension moved at a speed of few cm/year, being the fastest speed (2-4 cm/yr?) localized at the crest of the arc, presently positioned in the Ionian Sea. Contemporaneous to this process, the counter-clockwise rotation of Africa relative to Europe, generated a N-S convergence of few (2-5) mm/yr, responsible for the Pliocene to present compression acting along the northern offshore of Africa and Sicily. Being the Africa-Europe convergence much slower than the slab retreat, the origin of this latter process must be independent from the relative motion of the two major plates. This supports the coexistence of different geodynamic processes in the same area.

In this work we have studied the effect of culture density of wedge sole on growth and larval mortality, and analyzed, physiological indicators of stress parameters. Culture density significantly affect growth (larger alevins were those farmed at low densities). However, no affected survival. The cortisol content also varied with culture density, with values higher in fish at higher densities. However, glucose and lactate tested no change between treatments but increased significantly during the study. The results reflect that the values of cortisol in wedge sole larvae are superior to those described for other flatfish larvae and next to pelagic species. The highest concentration of this hormone to high density culture reflects a situation of stress in larvae that could respond to the lower growth rate in these culture conditions. Ebro Basin ,Magnetostratigraphy ,Eocene - Abstract
The Paleogene sedimentary record in the Pontils area (SE sector of the Ebro Basin) consists of a ~ 2000-m-thick sequence formed by the Mediona Fm, the Orpí Fm, the Pontils Gp, the Santa Maria Gp and the Sant Miquel de Montclar Conglomerates. The age of these materials is loosely constrained based on stratigraphic relationships with marine sediments and punctual mammal fossils and charophyte assemblages within the continental materials. In order to precise their chronology, a magnetostratigraphic section up to 1500-m-thick in the Pontils-Sant Miquel de Montclar area has been studied and correlated to the Global Polarity Time Scale. From this correlation the age of the Pontils Gp is established in Lutetian to middle Bartonian, the Collbàs Fm would be middle Bartonian and the overlying Sant Miquel Conglomerates would range from Bartonian to Priabonian. This new chronology has been integrated with recent magneto- and biostratigraphic studies in more northeasterly sectors of the SE margin of the Ebro Basin (Igualada and Montserrat areas). This new and continuous chronological framework is essential to unravel and quantify the rates of change in the Ebro Basin-Catalan Coastal Ranges system., This work is a contribution of the Geomodels Research Institute and the GGAC Group 2009 SGR 1198 of the Secretaria d'Universitats i Recerca del Departament d'Economia i Coneixement de la Generalitat de Catalunya . Huntington's disease results from a CAG repeat expansion within the Huntingtin gene; this is measured routinely in diagnostic laboratories. The European Huntington's Disease Network REGISTRY project centrally measures CAG repeat lengths on fresh samples; these were compared with the original results from 121 laboratories across 15 countries. We report on 1326 duplicate results; a discrepancy in reporting the upper allele occurred in 51% of cases, this reduced to 13.3% and 9.7% when we applied acceptable measurement errors proposed by the American College of Medical Genetics and the Draft European Best Practice Guidelines, respectively. Duplicate results were available for 1250 lower alleles; discrepancies occurred in 40% of cases. Clinically significant discrepancies occurred in 4.0% of cases with a potential unexplained misdiagnosis rate of 0.3%. There was considerable variation in the discrepancy rate among 10 of the countries participating in this study. Out of 1326 samples, 348 were re-analysed by an accredited diagnostic laboratory, based in Germany, with concordance rates of 93% and 94% for the upper and lower alleles, respectively. This became 100% if the acceptable measurement errors were applied. The central laboratory correctly reported allele sizes for six standard reference samples, blind to the known result. Our study differs from external quality assessment (EQA) schemes in that these are duplicate results obtained from a large sample of patients across the whole diagnostic range. We strongly recommend that laboratories state an error rate for their measurement on the report, participate in EQA schemes and use reference materials regularly to adjust their own internal standards.

The meagre, Argyrosomus regius, is a species with potential for Mediterranean aquaculture diversification, so the study of feeding rhythms is vital for optimizing culture protocols. In the present study we describe the feeding rhythms of meagre with a light-dark cycle. We tested three different periods of food availability: firtsly, self-feeders for 24h; secondly the opposite of the preferred period, selected in the first case; and finally, just the preferred period of feeding. The results indicated that the meagre prefers to feed during the day, and their circadian system is very flexible, being able to resynchronize depending on food availability .

Background: The frecuency of malignancies in renal transplant (RT) patients is increasing. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) of native kidneys is one of the most frequent and its outcome can be more aggressive than in general population. Objetive: To evaluate the incidence and prognosis of RCC in renal transplant patients followed in our transplantation unit. Methods: Between January 1997 and December 2009, 683 patients underwent kidney transplant at our hospital. Ultrasonography of the native kidneys was annually performed in all renal transplant patients. When suspect solid masses were found at ultrasonography, patients underwent computed tomography. If the suspicion was confirmed, nephrectomy was performed. Results: 14 radical nephrectomies were performed in 12 patients due to suspect CCR. In 11 nephrectomies (corresponding to 9 patients), anatomopathologic diagnosis was CCR (incidence 1.5%). Histologic stage was T1N0M0 in all cases. In the other 3 RT, the diagnosis was complicated renal cyst. Those patients without carcinoma had polycystic kidney disease. The time on dialysis before CCR diagnosis was 36.7 ± 24.3 months and the interval between RT and diagnosis was 39 ± 25.8 months. After a mean follow-up of 58.6 ± 38.6 months, the outcome of all cases has been excellent, without tumor recurrence. Conclusions: Annual renal ultrasonography plays a key role in the early diagnosis of CRR. The early treatment of this pathology is associated with an excellent prognosis in RT patients.

Trabajo presentado al XXV DCIS celebrado en Lanzarote del 17 al 19 de noviembre de 2010., In this paper, a technique to systematically design analog reconfigurable integrated circuits is presented. The methodology is based on a simulation-based optimization process that uses an evolutionary multi-objective algorithm. As it is well known, this kind of algorithms relies in the concept of Paretobased dominance. To cope with the complexity of reconfiguration in analog circuits, this concept is appropriately re-defined here with the notion of multi-mode Pareto-optimal fronts. The proposed solution is tested against a set of experiments to design a reconfigurable, fully-differential operational amplifier, whose performance trade-offs can be analyzed following the reported methodology. Moreover, some directions are given on the use of the resulting multi-mode Pareto-optimal fronts in a hierarchical synthesis methodology of reconfigurable analog circuits., This work has been supported in part by the TIC-2532 Project, funded by Consejería de Innovación, Ciencia y Empresa, Junta de Andalucía, in part by the Projects TEC2007-67247 and TEC2010-14825 funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation with support from ERDF, and in part by Project INTRAMURALES 200950I050 funded by CSIC.

The objective of this study was to study if the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis could feeding on organic material from residual water of a hatchery with fishes and cephalopods without consequences for the mussel survival and condition. The mussels were maintained during 3 months and an initial sample of condition index and gonadal development were made. Survival was measured every day and total value was 90 %. The condition index was stable the first two months but it fell down the last one. Finally water was filtered at the entry and exit of the tank to value the material organic content and it ranged between 30 and 1.2 g. Then mussels can be use to improve water quality in hatchery without affecting animal condition.

- Abstract
This work assesses the applicability of the analysis of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) to rocks associated with salt structures. Magnetic fabrics from 16 sites sampled on Upper Triassic clays (Keuper facies) interbedded within the salt layers of the Bicorb-Quesa and Navarre´s salt walls (Prebetic Zone, SE Spain) are mostly characterized by oblate magnetic ellipsoids with their magnetic foliation parallel to the bedding and magnetic lineation contained in the bedding plane but without a constant relationship with dip direction. To evaluate the quality and significance of the low-field AMS, several experiments were carried out to characterize the magnetic mineralogy of representative samples and enable separation of the contributions from paramagnetic and ferromagnetic (s.l.) minerals. The comparison between the orientation of the observed magnetic lineation and that of the structural elements characterizing the internal geometry of the studied salt structures (antiforms, minor folds, faults and shear zones) and flanks indicates that the magnetic fabric is controlled by deformation processes affecting the salt walls during their growth and/or evolution. Samples were also analyzed from sixteen sites from Miocene rocks outcropping in several syn-diapiric Miocene half-grabens related to the salt walls studied. Their magnetic fabric is interpreted to reflect the dominant stretching direction at the syn-diapiric half grabens during and/or shortly after deposition. Our results indicate that caution is required in interpreting magnetic lineations related to salt flow mechanics from rocks associated with salt structures.

- Abstract
In spite of the extensive research which has already been undertaken, the issue as to whether Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) empirically holds, continues to be strongly debated. Existing studies have been criticized for their reliance on unit root tests which are deemed to suffer from certain weaknesses such as the size distortion bias arising from heteroskedasticity. In this paper, we provide new evidence on PPP based on a new methodology that overcomes this problem. We use the widely accepted KSS (Kapetanios et al., 2003) non-linear unit root tests which we, however, wild bootstrapped. Through Monte Carlo simulation, we demonstrate that the wildbootstrapped KSS is robust to heteroskedasticity-induced size distortion problem. We apply this method to test PPP across 61 countries over the period 1994 to 2012 — a period characterized by a number of crises such as the Asian Financial Crisis, Russian Crisis, dotcom crisis, Global Financial Crises, among others, and therefore, intense heteroskedasticity. Our results provide strong evidence against PPP. This paper contributes to both the international financial economics and econometrics literatures.

Several wedge sole (D.) juvenile batches were reared at different culture conditions in order to study the growth and survival. The variables studied were stocking density, type of substrate (with and without sand) and light intensity. The trials lasted 189, 325 and 96 days, respectively. The initial fish size varied between 0,31 and 1,42 g. Significant differences were not found for SGR in any experiment. Regards the survival, differences were only observed in the density trial, the survival varying inversely with the density.

Most sedimentary modelling programs developed in recent years focus on either terrigenous or carbonate marine sedimentation. Nevertheless, only a few programs have attempted to consider mixed terrigenous-carbonate sedimentation, and most of these are two-dimensional, which is a major restriction since geological processes take place in 3D. This paper presents the basic concepts of a new 3D mathematical forward simulation model for clastic sediments, which was developed from SIMSAFADIM, a previous 3D carbonate sedimentation model. The new extended model, SIMSAFADIM-CLASTIC, simulates processes of autochthonous marine carbonate production and accumulation, together with clastic transport and sedimentation in three dimensions of both carbonate and terrigenous sediments. Other models and modelling strategies may also provide realistic and efficient tools for prediction of stratigraphic architecture and facies distribution of sedimentary deposits. However, SIMSAFADIM-CLASTIC becomes an innovative model that attempts to simulate different sediment types using a process-based approach, therefore being a useful tool for 3D prediction of stratigraphic architecture and facies distribution in sedimentary basins. This model is applied to the neogene Vallès-Penedès half-graben (western Mediterranean, NE Spain) to show the capacity of the program when applied to a realistic geologic situation involving interactions between terrigenous clastics and carbonate sediments.
