Abstract

Many instruments are created with the primary purpose of scaling individuals on a single trait. However psychological traits are often complex and contain domain specific manifestations. As such, many instruments produce data that are consistent with both unidimensional and multidimensional structures. Unfortunately, oftentimes, applied researchers make determinations about the final structure based solely on fit indices obtained from structural equation models. Given that fit indices generally favor the bifactor model over competing measurement models it is imperative that researchers make use of the available information the bifactor has to offer in order to compute informative indices including omega reliability coefficients, construct reliability, explained common variance, and percentage of uncontaminated correlations. Said indices provide unique information about the strength of both the general and specific factors in order to draw conclusions about dimensionality and overall scoring of scales (and subscales). Herein, we describe these indices and offer a new module which easily facilitates their computation., Muchos instrumentos se crean con el propósito principal de evaluar sujetos con relación a un solo rasgo. Sin embargo, los rasgos psicológicos son frecuentemente complejos y contienen manifestaciones de dominio específico. Como tal, muchos instrumentos brindan información que son consistentes tanto con las estructuras unidimensionales como las multidimensionales. Por desgracia, muchas veces, los investigadores aplicados hacen determinaciones sobre la estructura final basado únicamente en los índices de ajuste obtenidos a partir de modelos de ecuaciones estructurales. 266. Disentangling Within- and Between-Person Effects of Shared Risk Factors on E-cigarette and Cigarette Use Trajectories From Late Adolescence to Young Adulthood.

Abstract

Background: Longitudinal studies report associations between use of electronic cigarettes (ECs) and cigarettes over time among young people, but do not distinguish within- from between-person effects, which complicates interpretation of findings. Further, the role of shared risk factors, such as substance use and mental health, in explaining longitudinal associations between EC and cigarette use remains unclear. This study used within- and between-person analyses to assess longitudinal associations between youths' EC and cigarette use and shared risk factors.Methods: Between 2015 and 2017, 2039 youths completed three Web-based surveys, allowing us to model EC and cigarette use from ages 16 to 20. Auto-regressive latent growth models with structured residuals (ALT-SR) examined both between-person and within-person associations between past-month frequency of EC use, cigarette use, and third variables (alcohol and marijuana use, mental health symptoms) over time.Results: Models revealed robust reciprocal associations between EC and cigarette use, such that more frequent EC use at one time predicted more frequent cigarette use at the subsequent time, and vice versa. Between-person analyses showed associations between shared risk factors and both EC and cigarette use. However, shared risk factors did not predict frequency of subsequent EC and cigarette use in within-person analyses.Conclusions: Findings add to a growing body of research suggesting that EC use among youth is prospectively associated with progression toward greater cigarette use. Shared risk factors may help explain differences in EC and cigarette use patterns between young people, but do not appear to influence longitudinal trajectories of EC and cigarette use within individuals.Implications: This study examined within- and between-person associations between e-cigarette use, cigarette use, and shared risk factors (alcohol use, marijuana use, mental health symptoms) in a longitudinal cohort of youths. Within- and between-person analyses revealed reciprocal prospective associations between e-cigarette and cigarette use, suggesting a progression toward more frequent use of both products over time. The shared risk factors examined here did not affect escalations in e-cigarette or cigarette use over time within individuals, but likely influence which youths use these products. 268. Emissive Guanosine Analog Applicable for Real-Time Live Cell Imaging

Abstract

A new emissive guanosine analog CF3thG, constructed by a single trifluoromethylation step from the previously reported thG, displays red-shifted absorption and emission spectra compared to its precursor. The impact of solvent type and polarity on the photophysical properties of CF3thG suggests that the electronic effects of the trifluoromethyl group dominate its behavior and demonstrates its susceptibility to microenvironmental polarity changes. In vitro transcription initiations using T7 RNA polymerase, initiated with CF3thG, result in highly emissive 5′-labeled RNA transcripts, demonstrating the tolerance of the enzyme toward the analog. Viability assays with HEK293T cells displayed no detrimental effects at tested concentrations, indicating the safety of the analog for cellular applications. Live cell imaging of the free emissive guanosine analog using confocal microscopy was facilitated by its red-shifted absorption and emission and adequate brightness. Real-time live cell imaging demonstrated the release of the guanosine analog from HEK293T cells at concentration-gradient conditions, which was suppressed by the addition of guanosine.

269. Study design to evaluate a web-intervention to prevent alcohol and cannabis-impaired driving and use among adolescents in driver education

Abstract

Background: Alcohol and cannabis are the most commonly used substances among adolescents in the U.S. The consequences related to using both substances together are significantly higher relative to use of either substance alone. Teens’ propensity to engage in risky driving behaviors (e.g., speeding, rapid lane changes, and texting) and their relative inexperience with the timing and duration of cannabis’ effects puts them at heightened risk for experiencing harms related to driving under the influence. Use of alcohol and cannabis peak at age 16, the legal age teens may apply for a provisional driver’s license in some states. Targeting novice teen drivers prior to licensure is thus an ideal time for prevention efforts focused on reducing alcohol and/or cannabis initiation, use, and impaired driving. Methods: The current study proposes to evaluate the efficacy of webCHAT among 15.5 to 17-year-old adolescents (n = 150) recruited at driver education programs. WebCHAT is a single session online intervention that aims to prevent alcohol and cannabis use and risky driving behaviors. We will recruit adolescents enrolled in driver education programs, and stratify based on whether they used cannabis and/or alcohol in the past 3 months (60% screening negative and 40% screening positive). All participants will receive usual driver education and half will also receive webCHAT. We will test whether webCHAT in addition to usual driver education reduces alcohol and/or cannabis initiation or use and reduces risky driving attitudes and behaviors (intent to drive after drinking/using, riding as a passenger with someone who drank/used) compared to teens in usual driver education over a 6-month period. We will also explore whether variables such as beliefs and perceived norms serve as explanatory mechanisms for our outcomes. Discussion: The study has the potential to promote public welfare by decreasing adolescent initiation and use of cannabis and alcohol and reducing risky driving behaviors that can have substantial monetary, personal, and social costs. The study recruits adolescents who are at risk for substance use as well as those who are not and it is delivered remotely during a teachable moment when adolescents receive driver education.

Abstract

Emerging adulthood shapes personal, professional, and overall well-being through identity exploration. This study addresses a gap in the minority identity literature by investigating how urban AI/AN emerging adults think about their identity and discussing challenges and protective factors associated with exploring their identity holistically. This mixed-methods study created a sampling framework based on discrimination experiences, cultural identity, social network support, mental health, and problematic substance use. We recruited 20 urban AI/AN emerging adults for interviews. We sought to gain deeper insights into their experiences and discussions surrounding identity formation and exploration. We provide descriptives for demographic characteristics and conducted a thematic analysis of the qualitative data from the interviews. Four themes emerged: a) being an urban AI/AN emerging adult means recognizing that one's identity is multifaceted; b) a multifaceted identity comes with tension of living in multiple worlds; c) the trajectory of one's identity grows over time to a deeper desire to connect with Native American culture; and d) understanding one's Native American background affects one's professional trajectory. Findings underscore the importance of developing programs to support well-being and identity development through cultural connection for urban AI/AN emerging adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

271. Comparison of patient-reported outcomes measurement information system (PROMIS®)-29 and PROMIS global physical and mental health scores.

Abstract

Purpose: The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement and Information System (PROMIS®): includes the PROMIS-29 physical and mental health summary and the PROMIS global physical and mental health scores. It is unknown how these scores coincide with one another. This study examines whether the scores yield similar or different information. Methods: The PROMIS-29 and the PROMIS global health items were administered to 5804 adults from Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) in 2021–2022 and to 4060 adults in the Ipsos KnowledgePanel (KP) in 2022. Results: The median age of those in MTurk (KP) was 36 (54) and 53% (50%) were male. Mean T-scores on the PROMIS-29 and PROMIS global physical health scales were similar, but PROMIS global mental health was 3–4 points lower than the PROMIS-29 mental health summary score. Product-moment correlations ranged from 0.69 to 0.81 between the PROMIS-29 physical health and PROMIS global physical health scales and 0.56–0.69 between the mental health scales. Multi-trait multimethod analyses indicated that only a small proportion of the correlations between the two methods of measuring mental health were significantly more highly correlated with one another than correlations between physical and mental health. Conclusions: PROMIS-29 and PROMIS global mental health scales provide different information and, therefore, study conclusions may vary depending on which measure is used. Interpretation of results needs to consider that the PROMIS-29 mental health scale is a weighted combination of specific domains while the PROMIS global mental health scale is based on general mental health perceptions. 272. Evolutionary stasis and lability in thermal physiology in a group of tropical lizards

Abstract

Understanding how quickly physiological traits evolve is a topic of great interest, particularly in the context of how organisms can adapt in response to climate warming. Adjustment to novel thermal habitats may occur either through behavioural adjustments, physiological adaptation or both. Here, we test whether rates of evolution differ among physiological traits in the cybotoids, a clade of tropical Anolis lizards distributed in markedly different thermal environments on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. We find that cold tolerance evolves considerably faster than heat tolerance, a difference that results because behavioural thermoregulation more effectively shields these organisms from selection on upper than lower temperature tolerances. Specifically, because lizards in very different environments behaviourally thermoregulate during the day to similar body temperatures, divergent selection on body temperature and heat tolerance is precluded, whereas night-time temperatures can only be partially buffered by behaviour, thereby exposing organisms to selection on cold tolerance. We discuss how exposure to selection on physiology influences divergence among tropical organisms and its implications for adaptive evolutionary response to climate warming. © 2014 The Author(s) Published by the Royal Society. Abstract

It is generally assumed that the latent trait is normally distributed in the population when estimating logistic item response theory (IRT) model parameters. This assumption requires that the latent trait be fully continuous and the population homogenous (i.e., not a mixture). When this normality assumption is violated, models are misspecified, and item and person parameter estimates are inaccurate. When normality cannot be assumed, it might be appropriate to consider alternative modeling approaches: (a) a zero-inflated mixture, (b) a log-logistic, (c) a Ramsay curve, or (d) a heteroskedastic-skew model. The first 2 models were developed to address modeling problems associated with so-called quasi-continuous or unipolar constructs, which apply only to a subset of the population, or are meaningful at one end of the continuum only. The second 2 models were developed to address non-normal latent trait distributions and violations of homogeneity of error variance, respectively. To introduce these alternative IRT models and illustrate their strengths and weaknesses, we performed real data application comparing results to those from a graded response model. We review both statistical and theoretical challenges in applying these models and choosing among them. Abstract

This article reflects on the relevance and transformative possibilities of incorporating a framework of “guerilla praxis” into digital humanities curricula in the early twenty-first century. Engaging in guerilla praxis in the classroom creates opportunities for students to use devices such as laptops and smartphones as tools for research and critical analysis and also for creating and sharing knowledge in ways that work with, rather than against, the technological shifts and social movements of the early twenty-first century. Turning classrooms into digital research hubs for studying and sharing knowledge about current grassroots movements for social change allows students and educators to collaboratively participate in advocating for new visions of democracy and participatory education. In addition to transforming the way students and educators approach the work in the classroom, critical digital humanities pedagogy that incorporates a framework of guerilla praxis has the potential to reorient twenty-first-century institutions of higher education as spaces of critical social engagement and public service. Abstract

In my experiences, students with Developmental Disability (DD) are routinely excluded from Algebra and other high-level mathematics courses. People with DD do not have the opportunity to learn Algebra, which may support the understanding and provide purpose for learning money and budgeting skills that, perhaps, could help them avoid financial difficulties as adults. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of young adults with DD and me, their teacher researcher, about mathematics, finance, and self within a 6 week program of instruction titled the Money Club. This includes how adults with DD reason, apply, perceive, and solve applied mathematics problems in finance. Access to general education curriculum is not only a federally mandated law, but also a core interest to me as an educator. I want my students to learn what everyone else is learning, go places everyone else is going, and do things side by side with other people. Many people with DD do not learn algebra (even if the course title is Algebra). They will focus on basic skills, life skills, and non-skilled labor-intensive processes. I wanted people with DD to have access to higher mathematics and extend their life skills to include it. In high school, people with DD learn basic mathematics and life skills, which consist of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers; or as my peer teachers say, working on their mathematics skills.' They are taught many of the things I offered in the Money Club at a topical level: saving money, overspending, balancing their personal budgets, and avoiding people who take advantage of them. The Money Club's difference is that we used algebraic ways of thinking to accomplish these goals: Use of variables, function tables, graphs, matrices, and other higher order mathematics concepts and skills. Abstract

Acculturation is a complex multidimensional construct that plays an important role in various outcomes across many domains (e.g., psychological, behavioral, social, and developmental). While there are many acculturation measures for specific racial/ethnic groups, few multigroup measures exists. Even fewer have been psychometrically evaluated for differential item functioning (DIF; e.g., measurement invariance). This is a critical step in determining whether item properties are equivalent across groups and thus, whether scores obtained from different groups are in fact comparable. The Acculturation, Habits, and Interests, Multicultural Scale for Adolescents (AHIMSA) was completed by first and second generation participants identifying as White, Hispanic, or Asian (n = 1399). The scale can be used to compute scores on four acculturation orientation subscales: Assimilated, Separated, Integrated, and Marginalized. Racial/ethnic DIF was evaluated for the Assimilation, Integration, and Separation subscales. Analyses revealed racial/ethnic DIF was present for two items on the Separation scale based on McFadden's pseudo R2. No DIF was identified for the Assimilation and Integration scales. Supplemental analyses revealed no evidence of longitudinal DIF or by generation status and some DIF by sex for Assimilation and Integration. Based on evaluation of test characteristic curves and DIF plots, it was determined that DIF was trivial and could likely be ignored. Psychometric properties were generally equivalent across the three racial/ethnic groups for each of the subscales evaluated. This indicates that scores obtained from each subscale could be compared across racial/ethnic groups. By establishing cross-group usability of the scale, racial/ethnic differences in acculturation orientation can be examined, and, more importantly, used in the context of research on related mental, physical, and behavioral health outcomes. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to apply a set of rarely reported psychometric indices that, nevertheless, are important to consider when evaluating psychological measures. All can be derived from a standardized loading matrix in a confirmatory bifactor model: omega reliability coefficients, factor determinacy, construct replicability, explained common variance, and percentage of uncontaminated correlations. We calculated these indices and extended the findings of 50 recent bifactor model estimation studies published in psychopathology, personality, and assessment journals. These bifactor derived indices (most not presented in the articles) provided a clearer and more complete picture of the psychometric properties of the assessment instruments. We reached 2 firm conclusions. First, although all measures had been tagged “multidimensional,” unit-weighted total scores overwhelmingly reflected variance due to a single latent variable. Second, unit-weighted subscale scores often have ambiguous interpretations because their variance mostly reflects the general, not the specific, trait. Abstract

Background: Vascular changes including cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), reduced blood flow, pericyte loss and vascular platelet‐derived growth factor receptor‐β (PDGFRβ) deficiency have emerged as prominent features of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We previously identified the existence of the pathological hallmarks of AD, amyloid β‐protein (Aβ) plaques, along with intracellular and vascular Aβ deposits in the neurosensory retina of AD patients. Data suggest that certain retinal signs manifest early in disease progression and appear similar to those observed in the brain. Yet, retinal vascular abnormalities in AD and their ability to predict cerebral pathology and cognitive decline are poorly understood. Method: Here, we assessed vascular changes including capillary degeneration, PDGFRβ expression, vascular amyloidosis, pericyte loss, and blood‐retinal barrier (BRB) permeability in postmortem retinas from a cohort of mild cognitively impaired (MCI) and AD patients. We evaluated retinal cross‐sections from pre‐defined topographical regions and isolated retinal vascular networks labeled by periodic acid‐Schiff or immunofluorescence. We further quantified capillary degeneration, PDGFRβ expression, vascular amyloidosis, and inner BRB tight‐junction molecule expression and BRB leakage in transgenic APPSWE/PS1ΔE9 mouse models of AD (ADtg mice) at different disease stages. Result: Early and progressive PDGFRβ deficiency and pericyte loss were found in retinas from AD patients. PDGFRβ deficiency associated with vascular Aβ deposits in postmortem retinas from a cohort of MCI and AD patients. In ADtg mice as compared to age‐ and sex‐matched wild‐type mice, we found significant degeneration of retinal capillaries (P<0.0001). ADtg retinas also displayed a substantial vascular PDGFRβ deficiency (∼50% reduction, P=0.0017) and vascular Aβ deposition, which inversely correlated with the extent of degenerated capillaries (Pearson's r=‐0.8, P=0.0016). Tight‐junction alterations including claudin‐1 downregulation and increased BRB permeability were found in ADtg mice. In postmortem retinas from the human cohort, retinal PDGFRβ loss significantly associated with increased retinal vascular Aβ40 and Aβ42 burdens. Decreased vascular LRP‐1 and early apoptosis of pericytes in AD retina were further revealed. Correlations were identified between retinal vascular abnormalities and cerebral Aβ burden, CAA, and clinical status. Conclusion: Overall, the identification of age‐ and Alzheimer's‐dependent retinal capillary degeneration and compromised BRB integrity starting at early disease stages provide novel targets for AD diagnosis and therapy.
