The semi-dwarfing allele, sd1-d, has been widely utilized in developing high-yielding rice cultivars across the world. Originally identified from the rice cultivar Dee-Geo-Woo-Gen (DGWG), sd1-d , derived from a spontaneous mutation, has a 383-bp deletion in the SD1 gene. To date, as many as seven alleles of the SD1 gene have been identified and used in rice improvement, either with a functional single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), with insertion-deletions (InDels), or both. Here, we report discovery of a novel SNP in the SD1 gene from the rice genotype, Pusa 1652. Genetic analysis revealed that the inheritance of the semi-dwarfism in Pusa 1652 is monogenic and recessive, but it did not carry the sd1-d allele. However, response to exogenous gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) application and the subsequent bulked segregant and linkage analyses confirmed that the SD1 gene is involved in the plant height reduction in Pusa 1652. Sequencing of the SD1 gene from Pusa 1652 revealed a novel transition in exon 3 (T/A) causing a nonsense mutation at the 300th codon. The stop codon leads to premature termination, resulting in a truncated protein of OsGA20ox2 obstructing the GA 3 biosynthesis pathway. This novel recessive allele, named sd1-bm , is derived from Bindli Mutant 34 (BM34), a γ-ray induced mutant of a short-grain aromatic landrace, Bindli. BM34 is the parent of an aromatic semi-dwarf cultivar, Pusa 1176, from which Pusa 1652 is derived. The semi-dwarfing allele, sd1-bm, was further validated by developing a derived cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (dCAPS) marker, AKS-sd1. This allele provides an alternative to the most widely used sd1-d in rice improvement programs and the functional dCAPS marker will facilitate marker-assisted introgression of the semi-dwarf trait into tall genotypes.

Adaptation of humans in low gravity conditions is a matter of utmost importance when efforts are on to a gigantic leap in human space expeditions for tourism and formation of space colonies. In this connection, cardiovascular adaptation in low gravity is a critical component of human space exploration. Deep high-throughput sequencing approach allowed us to analyze the miRNA and mRNA expression profiles in human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), cultured under gravity (G), and stimulated microgravity (MG) achieved with a clinostat. The present study identified totally 1870 miRNAs differentially expressed in HUVEC under MG condition when compared to the cells subjected to unitary G conditions. The functional association of identified miRNAs targeting specific mRNAs revealed that miRNAs, hsa-mir-496, hsa-mir-151a, hsa-miR-296-3p, hsa-mir-148a, hsa-miR-365b-5p, hsa-miR-3687, hsa-mir-454, hsa-miR-155-5p, and hsa-miR-145-5p differentially regulated the genes involved in cell adhesion, angiogenesis, cell cycle, JAK-STAT signaling, MAPK signaling, nitric oxide signaling, VEGF signaling, and wound healing pathways. Further, the q-PCR based experimental studies of upregulated and downregulated miRNA and mRNAs demonstrate that the above reported miRNAs influence the cell proliferation and vascular functions of the HUVEC in MG conditions effectively. Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) scale inhibition by Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) on copper and aluminium metal surfaces was studied at 60 and 100 °C. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results revealed a novel pot like morphology for calcite which was resulted from the transformation of dumbbell morphology. The pot like morphology exposed the possibility of hollow structures for other polymorphs and is resulted from the breaking apart of the dumbbell structures at the middle, followed by fluffing of the separated parts., (© 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

The Liver is constantly subjected to mechanical, chemical and pathological insults throughout life, as a result of which there is a common occurrence of various liver diseases. Due to the complex nature of liver architecture, it is not possible to mimic the in-vivo conditions beyond a certain limit. Hence, the development of in-vitro and ex-vivo models to study various liver diseases has gained more importance over the last few decades. The present study aims to develop a semi-perfused liver explant model to give an extended lifetime for studying liver pathology and treatment options. Caprine liver tissue explants were sliced, weighed (25 mg) and placed on the area vasculosa of fertilized chicken eggs. Unfertilized eggs were used as controls. After varying time intervals of incubation on area vasculosa of fertilized chicken eggs, the liver slices were subjected to cell viability assay, lactate dehydrogenase assay and Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase assays. The results indicate that the viability and functional properties of such semi-perfused liver tissue explants holds good up to 6 h. Finally, the liver tissue explants were pre-treated with FBS, with and without anti-fibrotic drugs, and placed on chick embryo area vasculosa up to 6 h. The anti-fibrotic drug-treated semi perfused liver tissue explant showed a decrease in collagen formation as confirmed by histology and western blot. The methanolic extract of the leaves of Origanum majorana L., was screened for its antioxidant potential and chemical composition. Apart from high total phenolic, flavonoid and antioxidant contents, significant free radical scavenging ability was observed as assessed by the free radical scavenging assays viz., 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl, Ferric thiocyanate, Thiobarbituric acid, Ferric reducing antioxidant power and ABTS assays. The GC-MS analysis of the methanolic extract detected the presence of seven compounds - 5H-Cyclopropa[3,4]benz[1,2-e]azulen-5-one, 3,9,9a-tris (acetyloxy)-3-[(acetyloxy)methyl]-2-chloro-1,1a,1b,2,3,4,4a,7a,7b,8,9,9a-dodecahydro-4a,7b-dihydroxy-1,1,6,8-tetrame-thyl-,[1aR-(1aa,1ba,2a,3a,4aa,7aa,7ba,8a,9a,9aa)]-; Pentacosanoic acid, methyl ester; 10-Octadecenoic acid, methyl ester; 1,2,4-Trioxolane-2-octanoic acid, 5-Octyl-, methyl ester; Oleoyl chloride; Docosanedioic acid, dimethyl ester and Ethyl iso-allocholate.

Diwali is celebrated widely in Asian countries, with a custom of firing crackers. Crackers pollute the environment with noise, particulate matter and chemicals. There are reports on the variation of particulates during firing crackers but none on airborne microbes. The present study was conducted to know the impact of fire crackers on airborne microflora. The air samples were collected 3 days prior to Diwali, on Diwali and 3 days after Diwali during the year 2017 at 15 different areas in Chennai, India. Andersen N-6 viable particle air sampler was exposed with petridishes containing nutrient agar and potato dextrose agar for the isolation of bacteria and fungi respectively. An average of 1,904 ± 2.5 CFU/m 3 of bacteria recorded prior Diwali was reduced by 53.23% on Diwali and increased by 27.37% after Diwali. This reduction on Diwali is attributed to the exposure of bacteria to chemicals emitted by the crackers. For fungi, an average of 235.57 ± 1.67 CFU/m 3 was recorded prior Diwali, with an increase of 78.5% on Diwali. The increase in fungal count might be due to the release of spores by ground crackers. The study shows that bacteria are susceptible to the chemicals emitted by fire crackers when compared with fungi.

Vasodilation occurs as a result of the relaxation of the smooth muscle cells present in the walls of blood vessels. Various suitable models are available for the analysis of the vasoactive properties of drugs with therapeutic applications. But all these models have limitations, such as ethical issues and high cost. The purpose of this study is to develop an alternative model for studying the vasoactive properties of drugs using an in-ovo chicken embryo model. In the preliminary experiment, we used a well-known vasoconstrictor (adrenaline) and a vasodilator (spermine NoNoate) in the chick embryo area vasculosa and evaluated their concentration-response curve. Adrenaline (10 µM) and spermine NoNoate (10 µM) were administered in different arteries and veins and different positions of the right vitelline artery of the chick embryo. Results showed the middle of the vessel bed of the right vitelline artery having the best vasoactive effect compared to others. Finally, anti-hypertensive drugs, calcium channel blockers, and NOS agonists were administered in the chick embryo area vasculosa to validate the model. Results demonstrate that the chick embryo area vasculosa can be an alternative, robust, and unique in-ovo model for screening of anti-hypertensive drugs in real time.

The increased correlation between maternal cadmium (Cd) exposure and restricted fetal growth has become a matter of global concern. Because dietary nitrate has been demonstrated to offer a range of beneficial vascular effects, we attempt to unveil the effect of one such nitrate-rich food, beetroot, on recovering Cd-induced fetal growth retardation. Using chick embryos as a model, our results confirm that retarded growth is a result of exposure to Cd at an early stage of development and that Cd hinders vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. We find that beetroot juice (BRJ) recovers fetal growth retardation effects of Cd via its vasodilatory effect and promotes embryonic angiogenesis. In conclusion, this study confirms that BRJ reduces the rate of congenital malformations with Cd exposure in utero and suggests the importance of dietary supplements for pregnant women.

Existing animal models for screening tumor angiogenic process have various setbacks that necessitate further investigations. In this study, we developed an ex-ovo egg yolk angiogenesis model to screen the angiogenic potency of tumor cells (HeLa and SiHa cell lines). The egg yolk angiogenesis assay was applied to study the nitric oxide (NO) influence on switching from sprouting angiogenesis (SA) to intussusceptive angiogenesis (IA) under tumor microenvironment. Morphological analysis and SA-like or IA-like markers expression were determined during the development of chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) from day 5 to 13. Expression of Notch1, Notch2, EphrinB2, and Tie2 were considered as SA-like while TEM8, CALD1, CXCR4 and HOMX1 were followed as IA-like markers. The HeLa and SiHa cell lines embedded CAM showed an increase in micro and macro blood vessels and vascular size, junction and length which are the pivotal morphological parameters of angiogenesis. Further, the study revealed that HeLa is more aggressive than SiHa in inducing tumor angiogenesis. To determine the NO signaling implication in tumor milieu, NO donor (Spermine NONOate (SPNO)), NOS inhibitor (L-nitro-L-arginine-methyl ester (L-NAME) and VEGF inhibitor (Avastin) were administrated to chick embryo vascular bed with and without HeLa cells. The results demonstrated that HeLa cells promote IA through NO signaling, VEGF and eNOS and it was documented by angiogenic morphological parameters and SA-like or IA-like markers expression. Newcastle disease (ND) is a major risk to the poultry industry which results in severe economic loss throughout the world even with vaccination. The vaccine viruses that are used in many countries include the LaSota and other live viruses that were isolated in the early and late 1950s. Reports from several laboratories including ours indicate a greater variance of the circulating strains and recent classification indicates the existence of XVIII different genotypes of NDV strains. The efficiency of the LaSota vaccination in inducing protective immunity to different heterologous strains has been a question and its efficacy upon exposure to a virulent genotype IV strain has not been reported after 1989 world-wide except for India. Serum antibody negative (SAN) chicks of either sex obtained by hatching specific-pathogen-free (SPF) eggs were vaccinated with increasing doses of the vaccine virus from 10 1 to 10 7 EID 50 per bird delivered through occulo-nasal route and challenged 20 days later with NDV-2K3 (genotype IV) strain of virus isolated in the year 2000 from pigeon in India. The birds were monitored for serum antibody titers and following challenge for morbidity, mortality, viral load in the cloacal swab and different tissues. We could clearly show that a minimum vaccine titre of 10 4 EID 50 could establish protective antibody levels and also prevent viral replication post challenge upon exposure to the virulent genotype IV strain. We conclude based on our results and previous observation that there do exist differences in the levels of the antibody that could limit viral replication and shedding upon exposure to different heterologous genotype of NDV. Developing a strain matched vaccine might less potential to result in better protection by limiting the viral shedding.

The Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumor is a developmental cyst derived from the enamel organ or from the dental lamina. It is a benign, multicystic, intraosseous tumor of odontogenic origin, with a characteristic lining of parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium and has a potential for aggressive, infiltrative behavior and recurrence. Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumors have a predilection for males and occurs mainly in the second and third decade of life, most commonly in the mandible, mostly in the posterior body, the angle and the ascending ramus. It extends in the intramedullary space making it difficult to diagnose at an early stage. It is regarded as a distinctive entity because of its characteristic histology, proliferation kinetics and behavior. Main in 1970 described, collateral variant of Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumor, which presents adjacent to the roots of the teeth usually in the mandibular premolar region and radiologically is indistinguishable from the lateral periodontal cyst and gingival cyst.

Background & Objectives: A cyclic lipopeptide (CLP), surfactin produced by a strain of Bacillus subtilis subsp. subtilis (VCRC B471) was found to exhibit mosquitocidal activity. The present study was carried out to enhance the surfactin level using low cost material in the production medium., Methods: Two carbon sources, glucose and common sugar, and two nitrogen sources, ammonium nitrate and soya were used in the study. Different concentrations of 'C' and 'N' sources were used in the production medium to enhance the production of surfactin., Results: A new medium (SS7) containing 2% sugar, 6% soya and 0.5% common salt with micronutrients was designed which was found to enhance the production of surfactin. The crude mosquitocidal metabolite (CMM) produced in this medium was 3 g/l which was two times higher than that obtained using synthetic medium NYSM. The LC50 dosage of the CMM to the pupal stages of An. stephensi (2.3 μg/ml) was comparable to that obtained with CMM from the conventional medium., Interpretation & Conclusion: The newly designed cost-effective medium designated as sugar soya medium (SSM) enhanced the production of surfactin and the cost of production was estimated as [symbol: see text] 6 per litre, which is six times lesser than that of the conventional medium. Replacement of sodium chloride with cooking salt further reduced the cost of the medium.

Introduction: Responsible conduct of research requires a good knowledge about research ethics. With the recent changes in the clinical trial regulations and the proposed introduction of ethics in medical curriculum by the Medical Council of India, there is an urgent need to train the medical faculty and postgraduates in research ethics., Methodology: We wanted to measure the effectiveness of a one day program which was organized using didactic lectures and case scenarios on the knowledge, attitude and skills on ethics among faculty and postgraduates. This was done using a retropre questionnaire. We performed a Kolmogorov Smirnov test to measure the normality, Mann Whitney U-test to test the difference in scores between faculty and postgraduates and a Wilcoxin signed rank test to measure the prepost scores., Results: The faculty showed better scores in knowledge and attitude (p<0.05) when compared to postgraduates both before and after the workshop. The overall scores for both faculty and postgraduates had increased after the workshop (p<0.05)., Conclusion: This re-emphasizes the need for introduction of ethics training during undergraduate course and also the fact that even a short training program in research ethics could be effective.

We report the complete genome sequence of a Newcastle disease virus (NDV) isolate, NDV-D1/1998, from an apparently healthy village chicken in South India. This class II, genotype II virus is 15,186 nucleotides in length with unique amino acid variations and was found to be a velogenic pathotype by standard pathogenicity tests., (Copyright © 2014 Uthrakumar et al.)

The genome of a Newcastle disease virus isolated from a Japanese quail in 2003 is reported here. The genome is 15,192 nucleotides (nt) long, as found in the recent genotypes, and grouped as genotype VIIb, with a 6-nt insertion. Here, we report facile fabrication of Fe3O4-reduced graphene oxide (Fe3O4-RGO) composite by a novel approach, i.e., microwave assisted combustion synthesis of porous Fe3O4 particles followed by decoration of Fe3O4 by RGO. The characterization studies of Fe3O4-RGO composite demonstrate formation of face centered cubic hexagonal crystalline Fe3O4, and homogeneous grafting of Fe3O4 particles by RGO. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm shows presence of a porous structure with a surface area and a pore volume of 81.67 m(2) g(-1), and 0.106 cm(3) g(-1) respectively. Raman spectroscopic studies of Fe3O4-RGO composite confirm the existence of graphitic carbon. Electrochemical studies reveal that the composite exhibits high reversible Li-ion storage capacity with enhanced cycle life and high coulombic efficiency. The Fe3O4-RGO composite showed a reversible capacity ∼612, 543, and ∼446 mA h g(-1) at current rates of 1 C, 3 C and 5 C, respectively, with a coulombic efficiency of 98% after 50 cycles, which is higher than graphite, and Fe3O4-carbon composite. The cyclic voltammetry experiment reveals the irreversible and reversible Li-ion storage in Fe3O4-RGO composite during the starting and subsequent cycles. The results emphasize the importance of our strategy which exhibited promising electrochemical performance in terms of high capacity retention and good cycling stability. The synergistic properties, (i) improved ionic diffusion by porous Fe3O4 particles with a high surface area and pore volume, and (ii) increased electronic conductivity by RGO grafting attributed to the excellent electrochemical performance of Fe3O4, which make this material attractive to use as anode materials for lithium ion storage.

Key pathways like insulin signaling, AMP activated kinase (AMPK) activation and inflammatory signaling are involved in the complex pathological network of hepatic insulin resistance. Our aim is to investigate whether grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSP) and metformin (MET) target any of these pathways in insulin resistant rat liver. Albino Wistar rats were rendered insulin resistant by feeding a high fat-fructose diet (HFFD). Either GSP (100 mg/kg b.w), MET(50 mg/kg b.w) or both were administered to insulin resistant rats as therapeutic options. HFFD-feeding caused hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, increased gluconeogenesis, decreased tyrosine phosphorylation of insulin receptor-β(IR-β) and insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) and increased serine phosphorylation of IRS-1. The association of p85α subunit of phosphotidyl inositol 3 kinase(PI3K) with IRS-1 and subsequent Akt phosphorylation were reduced while the expression of mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK) were increased in HFFD rats. Both MET and GSP reduced hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia and improved glycolysis, tyrosine phosphorylation of IR-β and IRS-1, IRS-1-PI3K association and Akt activation. However, activation of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, leptin and suppressor of cytokine signaling-3 and reduction in adiponectin caused by chronic HFFD feeding were reversed by GSP better than by MET. Activation of AMPK by GSP was much less compared to that by MET. These findings suggest that GSP might activate PI3K pathway and promote insulin action by reducing serine kinase activation and cytokine signaling and MET by targeting AMPK. The beneficial effects were enhanced during combination therapy. Thus, combination therapy with MET and GSP may be considered for the management of metabolic syndrome.

We recently showed that astaxanthin (ASX), a xanthophyll carotenoid, activates phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathway of insulin signaling and improves glucose metabolism in liver of high fructose-fat diet (HFFD)-fed mice. The aim of this study is to investigate whether ASX influences phosphorylation of c-Jun-N-terminal kinase 1 (JNK1), reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and inflammation in liver of HFFD-fed mice. Adult male Mus musculus mice were fed either with control diet or HFFD for 15 days. After this period, mice in each group were divided into two and administered ASX (2 mg/kg/day, p.o) in 0.3 ml olive oil or 0.3 ml olive oil alone for the next 45 days. At the end of 60 days, liver tissue was excised and examined for lipid accumulation (Oil red O staining), intracellular ROS production, ER stress, and inflammatory markers. Elevated ROS production, lipid accumulation, and increased hepatic expression of ER stress markers such as Ig-binding protein, PKR-like ER kinase, phosphorylated eukaryotic initiation factor 2α, X-box binding protein 1, activating transcription factor 6, and the apoptotic marker caspase 12 were observed in the liver of the HFFD group. ASX significantly reversed these changes. This reduction was accompanied by reduced activation of JNK1 and I kappa B kinase β phosphorylation and nuclear factor-kappa B p65 nuclear translocation in ASX-treated HFFD mice. These findings suggest that alleviation of inflammation and ER stress by ASX could be a mechanism responsible for its beneficial effect in this model. ASX could be a promising treatment strategy for insulin resistant patients.

This study investigates the effects of astaxanthin (ASX) on insulin signaling and glucose metabolism in the liver of mice fed a high fat and high fructose diet (HFFD). Adult male Mus musculus mice of body mass 25-30 g were fed either normal chow or the HFFD. After 15 days, mice in each group were subdivided among 2 smaller groups and treated with ASX (2 mg·(kg body mass)⁻¹) in olive oil for 45 days. At the end of 60 days, HFFD-fed mice displayed insulin resistance while ASX-treated HFFD animals showed marked improvement in insulin sensitivity parameters. ASX treatment normalized the activities of hexokinase, pyruvate kinase, glucose-6-phosphatase, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, glycogen phosphorylase, and increased glycogen reserves in the liver. Liver tissue from ASX-treated HFFD-fed animals showed increased tyrosine phosphorylation and decreased serine phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrates (IRS)-1 and -2. ASX increased IRS 1/2 and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) association and serine phosphorylation of Akt. In addition, ASX decreased HFFD-induced serine kinases (c-jun N-terminal kinase-1 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase-1). The results suggest that ASX treatment promotes the IRS-PI3K-Akt pathway of insulin signaling by decreasing serine phosphorylation of IRS proteins, and improves glucose metabolism by modulating metabolic enzymes.

Astaxanthin (ASX), a xanthophyll carotenoid from the marine algae Hematococcus pluvialis, has anti-obesity and insulin-sensitivity effects. The specific molecular mechanisms of its actions are not yet established. The present study was designed to investigate the mechanisms underlying the insulin sensitivity effects of ASX in a non-genetic insulin resistant animal model. A group of male Swiss albino mice was divided into two and fed either a starch-based control diet or a high fat-high fructose diet (HFFD). Fifteen days later, mice in each dietary group were divided into two and were treated with either ASX (6 mg kg(-1) per day) in olive oil or olive oil alone. At the end of 60 days, glucose, insulin and pro-inflammatory cytokines in plasma, lipids and oxidative stress markers in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue were assessed. Further, post-receptor insulin signaling events in skeletal muscle were analyzed. Increased body weight, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia and increased plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 observed in HFFD-fed mice were significantly improved by ASX addition. ASX treatment also reduced lipid levels and oxidative stress in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. ASX improved insulin signaling by enhancing the autophosphorylation of insulin receptor-β (IR-β), IRS-1 associated PI3-kinase step, phospho-Akt/Akt ratio and GLUT-4 translocation in skeletal muscle. This study demonstrates for the first time that chronic ASX administration improves insulin sensitivity by activating the post-receptor insulin signaling and by reducing oxidative stress, lipid accumulation and proinflammatory cytokines in obese mice.

Background & Objectives: A cyclic lipopeptide, surfactin produced by a strain of Bacillus subtilis subsp. subtilis (VCRC B471) was found to exhibit activity against both the larval and pupal stages of mosquitoes. The present study was aimed at increasing the production of the mosquitocidal metabolite by modifying the conventional medium., Methods: Enhancement of mosquitocidal metabolite production was attempted by replacing the existing micronutrients of the conventional NYSM and supplementing the medium with additional amounts of glucose. The LC₅₀ value of culture supernatant (CS) against the larval and pupal stages of Anopheles stephensi was determined. Crude mosquitocidal metabolite (CMM) was separated from the CS, identified by MALDI-TOF analysis and its LC₅₀ dosage requirement for the pupal stage of the above mosquito species determined., Results: The medium containing a new composition of micronutrients and glucose up to 1 per cent resulted in increased metabolite production. The LC₅₀ value of the CS obtained in the improved medium against larvae and pupae of An. stephensi was 5.57 and 0.71 μl/ml, respectively. The yield of CMM was doubled in the improved medium. MALDI-TOF analysis revealed that the CMM was surfactin., Interpretation & Conclusions: The new improved medium enhanced the production of mosquitocidal metabolite as the dosage required for inciting 50 per cent mortality among the pupal stages of mosquitoes was only half of that required when the metabolite was produced in the conventional medium. The mosquitocidal metabolite was identified as surfactin, a cyclic lipopeptide and biosurfactant.

The reaction of benzynes with N-heteroaromatics including quinolines, isoquinolines, and pyridines and various terminal alkynes or ketones with an alpha-hydrogen in the presence of KF and 18-crown-6 in THF at room temperature for 8 h gave various N-arylated 1,2-dihydroheteroaromatics in good to moderate yields. Some of these product structures are found in various naturally occurring and biologically active heterocyclic compounds. The reaction involves an unusual multiple construction of new C--C, C--N, and C--H bonds and the cleavage of a C--H bond in one pot. It is likely that the three-component coupling proceeds through the nucleophilic addition of quinoline to benzyne, which generates a zwitterionic species. The latter then attracts a proton from terminal alkyne (or ketone) to generate an N-arylated quinolinium cation and an acetylide anion. Further reaction of these two ions provides the final substituted 1,2-dihydroquinolines. In the reaction, the terminal alkyne acts first as a proton donor and then as a nucleophile. The application of a three-component coupling reaction product, 1,2-dihydro-2-pyridinyl alkyne in a stereospecific [4+2] Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction with N-phenyl maleimide to give an isoquinuclidine derivative, an important core present in various natural products, is demonstrated.

N-Methyl indole reacts with but-2-yn-1-ol in the presence of PtCl(2) in MeOH giving indole derivatives having a substituted 3-oxobutyl group at the 3-position in good yield. Under the reaction conditions, various substituted indoles and substituted propargyl alcohols are successfully involved in the reaction giving the corresponding addition products in good to moderate yields. The catalytic reaction can be further extended to N-phenyl pyrrole. In the present multi-step reaction, PtCl(2) likely plays dual roles: as the catalyst for the rearrangement of propargyl alcohols to the corresponding alkenyl ketones and as the catalyst for the addition of indoles to the alkenyl ketones. Experimental evidence is provided to support the proposed mechanism.

Good quality single crystals of thiourea-doped triglycinesulphate (TuTGS) a new semiorganic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal has been successfully grown from aqueous solution by slow evaporation method. The solubilities under various solvents in different proportions have been studied. The structural characterization of the grown crystals was carried out by X-ray diffraction. The grown crystals were subjected to FTIR and Raman analyses for vibrational assignments. The optical absorption coefficient alpha was analysed and interpreted to be allowed in the direct transition. The values of allowed direct energy gap (Eg) for undoped and doped crystals were calculated. It was found that Eg values were decreased with organic molecule doping. The powder technique of Kurtz and Perry confirm the NLO property of the grown crystal.

The three-component coupling of benzynes with terminal alkynes and activated alkenes in the presence of CuI, PCy(3) and CsF in a 1:1 mixture of CH(3)CN and THF at 50 degrees C for 5 h gave 1-alkyl-2-alkynylbenzenes in good to moderate yields.

Benzynes react with allylic acetates or halides and terminal alkynes in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4, CuI and CsF in CH3CN at 50 degrees C for 5 h to give 1-allyl-2-alkynylbenzene derivatives in good to excellent yields.

Ferrites, with wide range of chemical compositions, have been studied extensively over the years as they have a plethora of applications such as magnetic read/write heads, transformer cores, antennas, microwave absorbers, deflecting yoke, high frequency transformers, catalysis, pigments etc. Particles of submicron size have attracted the attention of scientists and technologists in different fields because they exhibit many unique physical properties as compared to those of bulk materials and are in great demand. Traditional high temperature solid-state method for preparation of ferrites is associated with several limitations. The quest for synthesis of ultrafine ferrite materials has led to the development of various preparative methods. Several patents disclose different wet chemical techniques namely sol-gel, coprecipitation, hydrothermal, combustion, spray pyrolysis etc for preparation of variety of ferrites for wide range of applications. In this mini-review, several patented chemical methods have been discussed critically with specific examples along with the effect of synthetic routes on particle size formation. Applications of ferrite powders with different compositions prepared by the above mentioned patented methods have also been discussed in this review.

PtCl2 effectively catalyzes the multistep reaction of N-methyl indole (1 a) with pent-3-yn-1-ol (2 a) in THF at room temperature for 2 h to give indole derivative 3 a, which contains a five-membered cyclic ether group at C3 in 93% yield. Under similar reaction conditions, various substituted N-methyl indoles 1 b-h and indole (1 i) reacted efficiently with 2 a to afford the corresponding indole derivatives 3 b-h and 3 i in 48-91 and 72% yields. The results showed that N-methyl indoles with electron-donating substituents were more reactive affording higher product yields than those with electron-withdrawing groups. Likewise, various substituted but-3-yn-1-ols 2 b-e and other longer chain alkynyl alcohols 2 f-i also underwent a cyclization-addition reaction with N-methyl indole (1 a) to provide the corresponding cyclization-addition products 3 j-m and 3 a, 3 j, and 3 n-o in good to excellent yields. The present platinum-catalyzed cyclization-addition reaction can be further extended into N-methyl pyrrole. Mechanistically, the catalytic reaction proceeds by an intramolecular hydroalkoxylation of alkynyl alcohol to afford cyclic enol ether followed by the addition of the C--H bond of indole to the unsaturated moiety of cyclic enol ether providing the final product. Experimental evidence to support this proposed mechanism is provided.

A facile palladium-catalyzed carbocyclization reaction of aromatic iodides, bicyclic alkenes (norbornadiene, norbornene and oxabenzonorbornadiene), and benzynes to furnish various annulated 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene derivatives is described. The carbocyclization products from oxabenzonorbornadiene were further converted to polyaromatic hydrocarbons via a Lewis acid mediated deoxyaromatization reaction. [reaction: see text].
