Abstract

Recent JET experiments have been dedicated to the studies of fusion reactions between deuterium (D) and Helium-3 (3He) ions using neutral beam injection (NBI) in synergy with third harmonic ion cyclotron radio-frequency heating (ICRH) of the beam. This scenario generates a fast ion deuterium tail enhancing DD and D3He fusion reactions. Modelling and measuring the fast deuterium tail accurately is essential for quantifying the fusion products. This paper presents the modelling of the D distribution function resulting from the NBI+ICRF heating scheme, reinforced by a comparison with dedicated JET fast ion diagnostics, showing an overall good agreement. Finally, a sawtooth activity for these experiments has been observed and interpreted using SPOT/RFOF simulations in the framework of Porcelli's theoretical model, where NBI+ICRH accelerated ions are found to have a strong stabilizing effect, leading to monster sawteeth.

Abstract

Dedicated fast ion D-D and D-3He fusion experiments were performed on JET with carbon wall (2008) and ITER-like wall (2014) for testing the upgraded neutron and energetic ion diagnostics of fusion products. Energy spectrum of D-D neutrons was the focus of the studies in pure deuterium plasmas. A significant broadening of the energy spectrum of neutrons born in D-D fast fusion was observed, and dependence of the maximum D and D-D neutron energies on plasma density was established. Diagnostics of charged products of aneutronic D-3He fusion reactions, 3.7 MeV alpha-particles similar to those in D-T fusion, and 14.6 MeV protons, were the focus of the studies in D-3He plasmas. Measurements of 16.4 MeV gamma-rays born in the weak secondary branch of D(3He, γ)5Li reaction were used for assessing D-3He fusion power. For achieving high yield of D-D and D-3He reactions at relatively low levels of input heating power, an acceleration of D beam up to the MeV energy range was used employing 3rd harmonic () ICRH technique. These results were compared to the techniques of D beam injection into D-3He mixture, and 3He-minority ICRH in D plasmas.

Abstract

We report on the optical spectroscopic analysis of a sample of 99 low-luminosity quasi-stellar objects (LLQSOs) at $z\leq 0.06$ base the Hamburg/ESO QSO survey (HES). The LLQSOs presented here offer the possibility of studying the faint end of the QSO population at smaller cosmological distances and, therefore, in greater detail. A small number of our LLQSO present no broad component. Two sources show double broad components, whereas six comply with the classic NLS1 requirements. As expected in NLR of broad line AGNs, the [S{\sc{ii}}]$-$based electron density values range between 100 and 1000 N$_{e}$/cm$^{3}$. Using the optical characteristics of Populations A and B, we find that 50\% of our sources with H$\beta$ broad emission are consistent with the radio-quiet sources definition. The remaining sources could be interpreted as low-luminosity radio-loud quasar. The BPT-based classification renders an AGN/Seyfert activity between 50 to 60\%. For the remaining sources, the possible star burst contribution might control the LINER and HII classification. Abstract

We report a study of the local magnetism in thin films of SrRuO3 grown on (111) and (001) oriented SrTiO3 substrates using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy (XMCD) at the Ru-L2,3 edges. The application of the sum rules to the XMCD data gives an almost quenched orbital moment and a spin moment close to the value expected for the low spin state S = 1 . Full-multiplet cluster calculations indicate that the low spin state is quite stable and suggest that the occurrence of a transition to the high spin state S = 2 in strained thin films of SrRuO3 is unlikely as it would be too expensive in energy., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys Rev B

Abstract

We report a photoemission and x-ray absorption study on Au1-xPtxTe2 (x = 0 and 0.35) triangular lattice in which superconductivity is induced by Pt substitution for Au. Au 4f and Te 3d core-level spectra of AuTe2 suggests a valence state of Au2+(Te2)2-, which is consistent with its distorted crystal structure with Te-Te dimers and compressed AuTe6 otahedra. On the other hand, valence-band photoemission spectra and pre-edge peaks of Te 3d absorption edge indicate that Au 5d bands are almost fully occupied and that Te 5p holes govern the transport properties and the lattice distortion. The two apparently conflicting pictures can be reconciled by strong Au 5d/Au 6s-Te 5p hybridization. Absence of a core-level energy shift with Pt substitution is inconsistent with the simple rigid band picture for hole doping. The Au 4f core-level spectrum gets slightly narrow with Pt substitution, indicating that the small Au 5d charge modulation in distorted AuTe2 is partially suppressed., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Physical Review B

Abstract

The first limits on the prompt emission from the long gamma-ray burst (GRB) 130427A in the $>100\nobreakspace\rm{GeV}$ energy band are reported. GRB 130427A was the most powerful burst ever detected with a redshift $z\lesssim0.5$ and featured the longest lasting emission above $100\nobreakspace\rm{MeV}$. The energy spectrum extends at least up to $95\nobreakspace\rm{GeV}$, clearly in the range observable by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-ray Observatory, a new extensive air shower detector currently under construction in central Mexico. The burst occurred under unfavourable observation conditions, low in the sky and when HAWC was running 10% of the final detector. Based on the observed light curve at MeV-GeV energies, eight different time periods have been searched for prompt and delayed emission from this GRB. In all cases, no statistically significant excess of counts has been found and upper limits have been placed. It is shown that a similar GRB close to zenith would be easily detected by the full HAWC detector, which will be completed soon. The detection rate of the full HAWC detector may be as high as one to two GRBs per year. A detection could provide important information regarding the high energy processes at work and the observation of a possible cut-off beyond the $\mathit{Fermi}$-LAT energy range could be the signature of gamma-ray absorption, either in the GRB or along the line of sight due to the extragalactic background light., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, published in ApJ

Abstract

The impact of electromagnetic stabilization and flow shear stabilization on ITG turbulence is investigated. Analysis of a low-$\beta$ JET L-mode discharge illustrates the relation between ITG stabilization, and proximity to the electromagnetic instability threshold. This threshold is reduced by suprathermal pressure gradients, highlighting the effectiveness of fast ions in ITG stabilization. Extensive linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations are then carried out for the high-$\beta$ JET hybrid discharge 75225, at two separate locations at inner and outer radii. It is found that at the inner radius, nonlinear electromagnetic stabilization is dominant, and is critical for achieving simulated heat fluxes in agreement with the experiment. The enhancement of this effect by suprathermal pressure also remains significant. It is also found that flow shear stabilization is not effective at the inner radii. However, at outer radii the situation is reversed. Electromagnetic stabilization is negligible while the flow shear stabilization is significant. These results constitute the high-$\beta$ generalization of comparable observations found at low-$\beta$ at JET. This is encouraging for the extrapolation of electromagnetic ITG stabilization to future devices. 267. Arterial thromboembolism in a cat with transient myocardial thickening.

Abstract

Feline arterial thromboembolism has been reported to be secondary to various feline cardiomyopathies; however, it has not been described in cats with transient myocardial thickening. A previously healthy, one-year-old, castrated male cat presented with acute paraparesis and congestive heart failure. Echocardiography revealed asymmetric left ventricular free wall thickening and left atrial enlargement. Antithrombotic treatment and cardiac medication resulted in reperfusion and mobility on day seven in one limb and on day 10 in the other. Different complications were managed successfully, including worsening acute kidney injury, inflammation, pleural effusion, and anemia. After three weeks, the cat was discharged and prescribed oral antithrombotic drugs (clopidogrel and rivaroxaban) and cardiac medication. Within five months, echocardiographic findings normalized, and medical treatment was gradually discontinued. To date, the cat remains healthy at 1735 days after the initial diagnosis and 1494 days after the last antithrombotic medication. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report on feline arterial thromboembolism combined with transient myocardial thickening, with favorable long-term survival. 268. The Percentage of Antibiotic Resistance in Uncomplicated Community-Acquired Urinary Tract Infections: Findings of the RedAres Project.

Abstract

Background: Uncomplicated bacterial urinary tract infections (uUTIs) are commonly seen in outpatient practice. They are usually treated empirically with antibiotics. The pertinent German Clinical Practice Guideline contains recommendations on antibiotic selection, with the additional advice that the local resistance situation should be considered as well. However, up-to-date information on local resistance is often unavailable, because microbiological testing is mainly recommended for complicated UTIs. Resistance rates are often higher in recurrent uUTIs than in single episodes. In this study, we aimed to determine the resistance rates of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in patients with community-acquired uUTIs and to make these data available to the treating physicians. Methods: In a nationwide cross-sectional study in Germany (DRKS 00019059), we determined the percentages of resistance to antibiotics recommended for uUTIs (first choice: fosfomycin, nitroxoline, mecillinam, nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim; second choice: cefpodoxime, ciprofloxacin, cotrimoxazole, levofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin) over the period 2019-2021. The data were stratified by single episodes vs. recurrent UTIs (rUTIs). Results: Data from 2390 subjects were analyzed. E. coli was found in 75.4% of the samples with positive urine cultures (1082 out of 1435). The resistance rate of E. coli in single episodes (n = 725) was less than 15% for all antibiotics tested. In rUTIs (n = 357), resistance rates were also less than 15% for the most part; the only exceptions were trimethoprim (21.4%) and cotrimoxazole (19.3%). Conclusion: For single episodes of uUTI, all of the antibiotics studied can be recommended, at least as far as their resistance profiles are concerned. For recurrent UTI, all but trimethoprim and cotrimoxazole can be recommended. The second-choice antibiotics examined do not have a more favorable resistance profile than the first-choice antibiotics. Abstract

We describe a method for removing systematic biases of column-averaged dry air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) and CH4 (XCH4) derived from short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectra of the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT). We conduct correlation analyses between the GOSAT biases and simultaneously retrieved auxiliary parameters. We use these correlations to bias correct the GOSAT data, removing these spurious correlations. Data from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) were used as reference values for this regression analysis. To evaluate the effectiveness of this correction method, the tnzuncorrected/corrected GOSAT data were compared to independent XCO2 and XCH4 data derived from aircraft measurements taken for the Comprehensive Observation Network for TRace gases by AIrLiner (CONTRAIL) project, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the US Department of Energy (DOE), the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the HIAPER Pole-to-Pole observations (HIPPO) program, and the GOSAT validation aircraft observation campaign over Japan. These comparisons demonstrate that the empirically derived bias correction improves the agreement between GOSAT XCO2/XCH4 and the aircraft data. Finally, we present spatial distributions and temporal variations of the derived GOSAT biases.

Abstract

A survey of the inner Galaxy region of Galactic longitude l ∈[+15,+50] and latitude b ∈ [-4, +4] is performed using one-third of the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory, operated during ts construction phase. To address the ambiguities arising from unresolved sources in the data, we use a maximum likelihood technique to identify point source candidates. Ten sources and candidate sources are identified in this analysis. Eight of these are associated with known TeV sources but not all have ifferential fluxes that are compatible with previous measurements. Three sources are detected with significances >5 sigma; after accounting for statistical trials, and are associated with known TeV sources.

Abstract

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is sensitive to gamma rays and charged cosmic rays at TeV energies. The detector is still under construction, but data acquisition with the partially deployed detector started in 2013. An analysis of the cosmic-ray arrival direction distribution based on $4.9\times 10^{10}$ events recorded between June 2013 and February 2014 shows anisotropy at the $10^{-4}$ level on angular scales of about $10^\circ$. The HAWC cosmic-ray sky map exhibits three regions of significantly enhanced cosmic-ray flux; two of these regions were first reported by the Milagro experiment. A third region coincides with an excess recently reported by the ARGO-YBJ experiment. An angular power spectrum analysis of the sky shows that all terms up to $\ell=15$ contribute significantly to the excesses., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

VAMOS was a prototype detector built in 2011 at an altitude of 4100m a.s.l. in the state of Puebla, Mexico. The aim of VAMOS was to finalize the design, construction techniques and data acquisition system of the HAWC observatory. HAWC is an air-shower array currently under construction at the same site of VAMOS with the purpose to study the TeV sky. The VAMOS setup included six water Cherenkov detectors and two different data acquisition systems. It was in operation between October 2011 and May 2012 with an average live time of 30%. Besides the scientific verification purposes, the eight months of data were used to obtain the results presented in this paper: the detector response to the Forbush decrease of March 2012, and the analysis of possible emission, at energies above 30 GeV, for long gamma-ray bursts GRB111016B and GRB120328B., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in Astroparticle Physics Journal (20 pages, 10 figures). Abstract

Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) are gravitationally collapsed objects that may have been created by density fluctuations in the early universe and could have arbitrarily small masses down to the Planck scale. Hawking showed that due to quantum effects, a black hole has a temperature inversely proportional to its mass and will emit all species of fundamental particles thermally. PBHs with initial masses of ~5.0 x 10^14 g should be expiring in the present epoch with bursts of high-energy particles, including gamma radiation in the GeV - TeV energy range. The Milagro high energy observatory, which operated from 2000 to 2008, is sensitive to the high end of the PBH evaporation gamma-ray spectrum. Due to its large field-of-view, more than 90% duty cycle and sensitivity up to 100 TeV gamma rays, the Milagro observatory is well suited to perform a search for PBH bursts. Based on a search on the Milagro data, we report new PBH burst rate density upper limits over a range of PBH observation times. In addition, we report the sensitivity of the Milagro successor, the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, to PBH evaporation events., Comment: Accepted to Astroparticle Physics Journal (25 Pages, 3 figures and 7 tables).
