Abstract Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) is one of the very prominent examples of chaos in fluid dynamics with significant relevance in nature. Meanwhile, Echo State Networks (ESN) are among the most fundamental machine learning algorithms suited for modeling sequential data. The current study conducts reduced order modeling of experimental RBC. The ESN successfully models the flow qualitatively. Even for this highly turbulent flow, it is challenging to distinguish predictions from the ground truth. The statistical convergence of the ESN goes beyond the velocity values and is represented in secondary aspects of the flow dynamics, such as spatial and temporal derivatives and vortices. Finally, ESN’s main hyperparameters show values for best performance in strong relation to the flow dynamics. These findings from both the fluid dynamics and computer science perspective set the ground for future informed design of ESNs to tackle one of the most challenging problems in nature: turbulence.

Abstract Aging is accompanied by possible cognitive impairment, as well as a reduction in nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, insulin resistance, and vitamin D deficiency. Among these Nitric oxide exhibits a dual role in brain biology, where both low and high levels can have detrimental effects on memory and neurotoxicity. In this study we aimed to investigate the role of nitric oxide, insulin resistance, and vitamin D in cognitive function of elderly individuals. This case-control study involved participants aged ≥ 60 years who were under observation in the Birjand Longitudinal Aging Study. A total of 40 participants were selected as controls, while 64 participants with cognitive impairment were identified as cases. The cases were further subdivided according to their Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores into two groups: mild and moderate cognitive impairment. Cognitive function in both cases and controls was assessed using the MMSE. The levels of total NOx, vitamin D, insulin, and blood glucose were measured using ELISA and spectrophotometric immunoassays. Abstract Grapes, renowned for their diverse phytochemical composition, have long been recognized for their health-promoting properties. This narrative review aims to synthesize the current research on grapes, with a particular emphasis on their role in disease prevention and health enhancement through bioactive compounds. A comprehensive review of peer-reviewed studies, including in vitro, in vivo, and clinical investigations, was conducted to elucidate the relationship between grape consumption and health outcomes. The review highlights the positive association of grape intake with a decreased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Notable bioactive components like resveratrol are emphasized for their neuroprotective and antioxidative capabilities. Additionally, the review explores emerging research on the impact of grapes on gut microbiota and its implications for metabolic health and immune function. This updated review underscores the importance of future research to fully leverage and understand the therapeutic potential of grape-derived compounds, aiming to refine dietary guidelines and functional food formulations. Further translational studies are expected to clarify the specific bioactive interactions and their impacts on health. Graphical Abstract

Summary: Background & Aims: Nowadays, research on extraskeletal effects of Vitamin D on human health is growing This study aimed to Serum vitamin D levels measurement in older adults with and without dyslipidemia: a comparison using baseline data from the Birjand Longitudinal Aging Study (BLAS). Methods: This cross-sectional study included 420 elderly people over 60 years old divided into in two equal groups with and without dyslipidemia. Data were drawn from the first phase of Birjand Longitudinal Aging Study (BLAS). A questionnaire containing demographic information and Mini nutritional assessment (MNA) was completed through interviews. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated, and after 12 hours of fasting, 5 mL of venous blood was taken to measure the serum levels of 25(OH) D and lipid profile. Results: Among the elderly, 37.3%, 33.3% and 29.3% had sufficient, insufficient and deficient Vitamin D levels, respectively. A significant difference in triglyceride levels was observed between the two groups of elderly individuals with insufficient and deficient Vitamin D levels (P=0.011). Multiple logistic regression showed that an increase in the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) (P = 0.005, OR = 18.46) and BMI (P = 0.001, OR = 18.46) significantly increased the odds of dyslipidemia. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency or insufficient was common among the elderly and was associated with elevated serum triglyceride levels.

IntroductionFaba bean (Vicia faba L.) is one of the oldest cultivated legumes, widely grown in temperate regions and at high altitudes in tropical areas. This crop thrives in wet and cool conditions, while hot and dry weather can severely damage its yield. Therefore, the sowing date must be carefully selected to avoid excessive heat, particularly during the flowering period. In field data analysis, the 'environment' refers to any recommended management practice for producers, such as sowing date, planting density, or fertilizer application. GGE biplot (Genotype plus Genotype-by-Environment biplot) and PLSR (Partial Least Squares Regression) can be used to analyze these datasets. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the interaction between variety and sowing date by multiplicative models such as SREG and GGE biplot and to evaluate the quality of varieties using a sensory panel. Materials and MethodsThe present experiment was carried out in a split plot based on randomized complete block design with three replications in Soamesera, Gilan province. The main factor in this experiment was sowing date (11 November, 11 December, 10 January and 9 February) and the split factor was faba bean varieties (Guilan landrace, Barakat, Feiz, Shadan and Mahta). Evaluation of the effect of sowing date was caried out by analysis of variance, mean comparison, GGE biplot and PLSR methods by GEA-R software. A sensory panel was used to evaluate the quality of taste in the fresh seeds of bean varieties obtained from the first sowing date by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U using SPSS software. Results and DiscussionAnalysis of variance showed that the effect of variety were significant on all traits including days to emergence, days to pod formation, plant height, green pod length, stems per plant, seeds per pod, pods per plant, hundred seed weight, green pod yield, biological yield and harvest index. The effect of sowing date was significant on all traits except stems per plant. The interaction effect of two factors was also significant on all traits except days to emergence and stems per plant. For traits with significant interaction between two factors, the mean comparison of variety (sub factor) was carried out at each level of sowing date (main factor). Days to pod formation, plant height and pods per plant in all varieties had a downward trend from the first to the fourth sowing date. Feiz had the longest length of green pods and the highest number of seeds per pod in all of sowing dates. Mahta and Shadan with smaller seed size had more pods per plant than other varieties. Shadan and Faiz had more hundred seed weight compared to other varieties in the late sowing dates. The highest seed yield was obtained in Shadan (431.65 g.m-2) on 11 November and the lowest yield was obtained in the Guilan landrace (75.65 g.m-2) on 9 February. With the delay in sowing, the seed yield decreased in Barkat, Feiz and Guilan landrace, but in Mahta and Shadan, with the delay in sowing, the seed yield decreased until the third sowing date, and again increased on the fourth sowing date. GGE biplot analysis showed that Barkat, Feiz and Shadan had the highest; and Mahta and Guilan landrace had the lowest seed yield. Also, Faiz and Guilan landrace had more stable yield in different sowing dates. Based on another view of GGE biplot, the best genotype for first sowing date was Guilan landrace; for second sowing date, Feiz; for third sowing date, Barket; and for fourth sowing date, Shadan and Faiz. In PLSR approach was investigated the relationship between the dependent variable (seed yield, Y) and the climatic explanatory variables (X variables). The results showed that the genotypes had different responses to different sowing dates and also their climatic needs were different, so that Mahta, Shadan and Barkat were more under the influence of temperature factors at the end of the growing season, and Faiz and Guilan landrace were more under the influence of temperature factors at the beginning of the growing season, as well as the amount of precipitation and evaporation in whole period of growth. Wide temperature range (difference between high and low temperature) at the end of the growing season has a negative effect on the yield of Feiz and Guilan landrace, while low temperature at the beginning of the growing season has a positive effect on these genotypes. Evaluation of the quality of taste with a sensory panel in the fresh seeds showed that Feiz had the highest rank of taste among the varieties. ConclusionsIn conclusion, although Guilan landrace and Feiz had more stability of yield in comparison with other varieties, considering the higher yield of Faiz compared to Guilan landrace and also its superiority in the sensory panel, this variety can be considered as a substitute for Guilan landrace faba bean in Guilan province. Also, the results of this study show the significant reaction of the seed yield of all five varieties to the sowing date and the necessity of timely sowing to achieve high yield. According to the results of this study, the best time to sowing broad beans in all five varieties was on the 11 November and 11 December; and in case of delay in sowing, Feiz are more recommendable than other varieties.

The p53-MDM2 pathway plays a crucial role regulating tumor suppression and is a focal point of cancer research. This literature review delves into the complex interplay between the tumor suppressor protein p53 and its main regulator MDM2, highlighting their interaction and implications in cancer development and progression. The review compiles and summarizes the existing understanding of the biology and regulation of p53 and MDM2, emphasizing their roles in various cellular processes, including cell cycle regulation, DNA repair, apoptosis, and metabolism. It also discusses the disruption of the p53-MDM2 interaction in different cancer types and its impact on tumor progression and therapeutic resistance. Recent studies have highlighted natural products as promising avenues for targeting the p53-MDM2 pathway. This review categorizes these natural compounds into three groups based on their mechanisms: those that inhibit MDM2 expression or stability, those that prevent p53-MDM2 binding, and those that stabilize p53 by inhibiting MDM2’s E3 ligase activity. Detailed mechanisms of action, structural aspects, and potential therapeutic applications of various natural products, including polyphenols, terpenoids, and alkaloids, are presented. Despite significant advances in understanding the p53-MDM2 interaction and the identification of natural products capable of modulating this pathway, further research is necessary to evaluate the clinical efficacy, toxicity, and bioavailability of these compounds. The promising role of natural products in cancer therapy underscores the importance of ongoing investigation and development of these agents as potential treatments for cancer.

Background: tinea versicolor is a benign, superficial fungal infection of the skin. It belongs to Malassezia-related diseases causing hyperpigmented or hypopigmented finely scaly macules. The most frequently affected sites are the trunk, neck, and proximal extremities. The most causative agents were Malassezia furfur, Malassezia globosa, Malassezia sympodialis. It is more common in warm and humid conditions. Aim: To study certain epidemiological factors of tinea versicolor disease distribution among patients attending dermatological outpatient clinic. Patients and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted on patients suffering from tinea versicolor disease attending dermatological outpatient clinic in Tikrit Hospital from 1st January 2023 - 30th June 2023. The sample was a convenient sample which included all patients suffering from tinea versicolor disease (attending outpatients' clinic of dermatology in Tikrit teaching hospital. The sample size was 112 patients. The patient's demographic information and risk factor history was taken according to a suitable questionnaire which was full filled by the researcher throw direct interview with patient. The diagnosis was basically done on a clinical base by the dermatologist. Results: The tinea versicolor disease cases were with significant difference among adolescent age group (21-31 years) (59%) , body back (51%) followed by shoulder area (26%) with significant difference and with those with outdoor working (72%). Conclusions: Tinea versicolor disease was among adolescent age group, with patients having oily skin, sweaty and those were outdoor working with a significant difference.

The tension forces of cables in cable-stayed bridges during their construction and operation may differ from initial conditions, which could affect the amount and distribution of internal forces on other parts of the bridge. If some bridge elements are loaded to their yield limits, alternating plasticity and incremental collapse could occur under moving and repeated loading. This study investigated the effect of the initial tension force on the stiffness, strength, shakedown limit load, and alternating plasticity of cable-stayed bridges, which has not been studied so far. Two case study bridge models with cables having different initial forces were tested using nonlinear static analysis under gravitational force and nonlinear dynamic analysis under transient moving loads. The results showed that changes in the initial cable forces did not change the initial stiffness, ultimate strength, shakedown limit, alternating plasticity, or bridge reliability. These results were theoretically validated using plastic analysis theorems. This paper presents a new construction method for cable-stayed bridges based on the finding that adjusting the cable tension to the design value is not necessary during construction and operation. This method eliminates the need for tension adjustment and ensures that the final geometric shape of the bridge matches the expected profile. The proposed method offers a simpler and more efficient approach to constructing cable-stayed bridges without compromising the safety and durability of the structure.

In this perspective article, several internationally recognized experts, members of the editorial team of this journal, discuss a selection of current hot topics identified in Food Science and Foodomics. The topics are comprised of the main areas of Food Science and Foodomics, namely, food safety, food authenticity, food processing, and food bioactivity. Logically, several of the discussed topics involve more than one of the mentioned main areas. Regarding food safety, the topics discussed are the use of analytical nanotechnology, nanometrology, nano-chromatography; the determination of organic contaminants based on MS and NMR; the impact of microplastics and nanoplastics on food or the contamination of foods with plant toxins. Regarding food authenticity, the paper discusses the role of MS, NMR, biosensors and the new trends in foodomics for food authentication. In terms of food processing, the work shows interesting perspectives on novel processing technologies, the effect of food processing on the gut microbiota or in the interaction among secondary metabolites and macromolecules; the development of active packaging, and the potential effects of introducing recycled plastics in food packaging; the new green extraction and encapsulation strategies of bioactive compounds from food by-products; and the anti-biofilm capacity of natural compounds/extracts/vegetal oils and essential oils. Food bioactivity and the relation between food and health includes the bioavailability and bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds; new trends and challenges in the interaction of nutraceuticals with biological systems; how food matrix impacts the bioaccessibility of nutrients and bioactive compounds; or the study of biodiversity, food and human health through one-health concept. We anticipate elaborations on these hot topics will promote further studies in Food Science and Foodomics.

Abstract Background Mentha consumption may associated with blood pressure improvement in humans, but the recent evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showed inconsistent results. The present study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs to investigate the effect of Mentha on blood pressure. Methods To cover all relevant literature, a complete search was conducted across PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases before March 2024 using PRISMA guidelines. In addition, Google Scholar, SID databases, the reference lists of the related reviews, and meta-analyses were searched for this purpose. Also, a “snowball search” was applied to include other relevant trials that may have been missed. A random-effects model was used for quantitative data synthesis, with weight mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Standard methodologies were utilized to assess kappa statistics between the authors, GRADE evidence profiles, heterogeneity, meta-regression, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias. Results Out of 476 publications identified, seven RCTs were eligible and included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. There was perfect agreement in study selection between the reviewers (К statistic, 0.86; p 130 mmHg or DBP > 80 mmHg. Conclusions Our findings showed that Mentha consumption might not have a statistically significant effect on lowering SBP, DBP, long-term SBP, and long-term DBP. However, it can lead to a clinically significant reduction in both long-term SBP and long-term DBP. Besides, Mentha may have potential benefits for patients with pre-hypertension and hypertension. Nevertheless, further well-designed RCTs are needed to confirm our results. PROSPERO Registration No: CRD42023459490

Abstract Trace elements, specifically magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se) have been linked with immunomodulatory properties. This research delves into identifying the potential impression of serum levels Mg, Zn, and Se on the protective immunity arisen through Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine in the vaccinated subjects. Levels of Mg, Zn, and Se, cytokine and antibody production as well as virus neutralization potency were investigated in 75 males and 75 females before and 2 weeks after first and second dose of vaccination. Level of Mg, Zn, and Se did not change significantly before and 2 weeks after first and second dose of vaccine administration. Concentrations of Interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, and Interferon (IFN)-γ were significantly higher in the supernatant of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from subjects 2 weeks after both first and second dose of vaccination compared to before vaccination. Serum level IgG was significantly higher 2 weeks after first and second dose of vaccination compared to before vaccination. Serum level IgM was only higher after first dose of vaccination compared with before vaccine. Also, 2 weeks after both first and second dose of vaccination compared to before vaccination, FRNT50 titer was significantly higher. Levels of Mg, Zn, and Se did not significantly correlate with levels of IL-2, IL-6, IFN-γ, IgM and IgG, and FRNT50 after first and second dose of vaccination. No severe unwanted clinical symptoms were detected after vaccination. Mg, Zn, and Se do not play a role in modulating protective immunity during Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine.

Abstract Extreme heat events have become more common and more severe during summer than ever before as a result of the warming climate in Australia. The impact of urban morphology and green coverage on outdoor thermal comfort has been the subject of extensive research, however, their link to suburban developments of different historic periods is still underexplored. This paper investigates and compares the outdoor thermal performance of ten suburban areas constructed since the late nineteenth century in Greater Adelaide, which were built to different planning ideals and concepts of their time. Microclimate models of two precedents for five development eras were constructed in ENVI-met, validated with site data related to a recent heatwave event in 2023, and then used to facilitate further investigation of the impact of development patterns on outdoor thermal comfort. This study examines how these urban patterns perform in scenarios of varying development intensity and greenery ratio. In these case studies, the distance between buildings, streets’ spatial ratio and green coverage has a significant impact on the thermal environment. The results underline the impact of solar exposure on outdoor thermal performance even in lower-density suburban areas. Some of the outcomes of the study are counter-intuitive to conventional assumptions about urban design typologies. In this comparison, for example, one of the “green” model garden city developments did not perform as well as denser 19th-century suburbs. The results can support better decision-making for future urban planning in Australia and other regions with similar climate conditions. The study shows that real performance does not always align with stated green ambitions and, urban design should consider and evaluate heat mitigation through evidence-based testing to achieve real green development.

Abstract Background Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) significantly reduces HIV transmission, but it is not commonly prescribed in Iran. Therefore, this study aimed to identify facilitators and barriers to PrEP use among four key populations (KPs) in Iran. Methods We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with female sex workers (FSW), men who have sex with men (MSM), people who inject drugs (PWID), and sexual partners of people living with HIV (PLHIV) to obtain deep insights into the participants’ experiences, beliefs, and viewpoints. We included HIV experts, including staff from the HIV control department, healthcare providers with HIV experience, health policymakers, infectious disease specialists, and university professors. We performed a content analysis to identify facilitators and barriers to PrEP implementation among KPs. Results We interviewed seven FSW, seven MSM, four PWID, four sexual partners of PLHIV, and 18 HIV experts. The facilitator’s theme emerged in four main categories, including eight different factors: 1) Individual and interpersonal factors (motivations, fear of testing positive for HIV, and safety nets and financial support), 2) Age and sex differences, 3) Organizational factors (appropriate PrEP distribution, information sharing, and receipt of high-quality services, 4) Efficacy of PrEP. The barrier’s theme emerged in three main categories, including four factors: 1) Individual factors (insufficient knowledge and awareness, and fragile trust), 2) Cultural barriers, and 3) Organizational factors (inadequate infrastructure and organizational barriers). Conclusions We identified key facilitators and barriers to successful PrEP implementation among KPs in Iran. By addressing these barriers, Iran has an opportunity to include PrEP programs in its HIV prevention efforts for KPs.

Abstract Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most prevalent obesity-related diseases in women of reproductive age. Linkage between diet and PCOS are still controversial. Dietary obesity prevention score (DOS) is one of the new indicators of diet evaluation which have been previously linked to obesity. To the best of our knowledge, this study was the first to investigate the relationship between DOS and PCOS. In this case–control study, 100 newly diagnosed women with PCOS and 100 age–matched women without PCOS were assayed from clinics affiliated to Kashan university of medical sciences, Kashan, Iran. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate food intakes. DOS was calculated based on previous published guideline. Anthropometric measurements were carefully measured by a trained nutritionist. A 10-houres fasting plasma blood sample was collected for all participants. Fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (CHOL), High density lipoprotein (HDL), Low density lipoprotein (LDL) and C - reactive protein (CRP) were measured based on laboratory methods. The mean age and BMI of study participants was 23.6 year and 24.9 kg/m2 respectively. After adjustment for potential confounders, adherence to DOS score was inversely associated with CRP levels. People in the top tertile of DOS had lower CRP level compared to people in the bottom tertile (3.71 compared to 4.48 mg/dl) (P = 0.04). In addition, participant in the top tertile of DOS had marginally significant higher level of FBS compared to participants in the bottom tertile (92.3 vs. 88.9 mg/dl, P = 0.051). After adjustment for all confounding factors people in the highest tertile of DOS had a 46% non-significant lower odds for PCOS compared to people in the lowest tertile (95% CI: 0.23–1.25; P-trend = 0.15). In the present study, an inverse significant association was seen between adherence to DOS and inflammation. However, no significant relationship was observed between DOS and odds of having PCOS. Further longitudinal studies are suggested to investigate the association between DOS and PCOS.

Abstract Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a silent epidemic among people who inject drugs (PWID). HBV testing and vaccination are important for PWID to reduce the risk of infection, prevent chronic complications and contribute to public health efforts in addressing HBV transmission. Our objective was to assess the self-reported lifetime uptake of HBV testing and vaccination among PWID in Iran and their associated factors. Method This cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,684 PWID in 11 large cities from July 2019 to March 2020 using a respondent-driven sampling method. Participants were interviewed face-to-face and asked about their lifetime experience of HBV testing and vaccination uptake as the outcome. Logistic regression models were built to identify related factors for reporting HBV testing and vaccination uptake. Results The prevalence of HBV testing and vaccination uptake among PWID was 14.2% (95% confidence intervals [CI]: 12.8–15.6) and 16.4% (95% CI: 14.9–18.1), respectively. Shared needles, syringes, or equipment in the past 12 months decreased the odds of reporting lifetime HBV testing uptake (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR]:0.46, 95% CI: 0.29–0.72). However, having an academic education (AOR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.09–3.30) and lifetime experience of homelessness (AOR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.21–2.06) increased the odds of reporting lifetime HBV vaccination uptake. Conclusion Our study highlighted the low prevalence of HBV testing and vaccination uptake among PWID in Iran. It is essential to understand and address the obstacles preventing PWID from getting tested and vaccinated for HBV. Addressing these barriers could significantly reduce the burden of HBV among this socio-economically marginalized population.

Abstract Background Conventional antibacterial compounds can inhibit the growth of microorganisms, but their adverse effects and the development of drug limit their widespread use. The current study aimed to synthesize PEG-coated UIO-66-NH2 nanoparticles loaded with vancomycin and amikacin (VAN/AMK-UIO-66-NH2@PEG) and evaluate their antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities against vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) clinical isolates. Methods The VAN/AMK-UIO-66-NH2@PEG were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) to determine their size, polydispersity index (PDI), encapsulation efficiency (EE%), zeta-potential, drug release profile, and physical stability. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and time-kill assays. Biofilm formation by VRSA was assessed using the crystal violet (CV) and minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) assays. The effect of sub-MIC concentrations of the formulations on the expression of biofilm-related genes (icaA, icaD) and resistance-related genes (mecA, vanA) was investigated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results As demonstrated by MIC, MBC and time-kill assay, the VAN/AMK-UIO-66-NH2@PEG nanoparticles exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity against VRSA isolates compared to free drugs and prepared formulations. Furthermore, CV and MBEC tests indicated that the VAN/AMK-UIO-66@NH2/PEG can reduce biofilm formation dramatically compared to VAN/AMK and VAN/AMK-UIO-66@NH2, due to its great drug release properties. This study also found that the expression level of the mecA, vanA, icaA, and icaD genes in VAN/AMK-UIO-66@NH2/PEG treated VRSA isolates was substantially decreased compared to other groups. Conclusions These findings highlighted the efficiency of VAN/AMK-UIO-66@NH2/PEG in combating antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation in VRSA isolates. Future studies, particularly in vivo models, are necessary to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and clinical applicability of these nanoparticles for the treatment of bacterial infections.

Abstract Rhizomania is the most destructive sugar beet disease in the world, and in recent years, it has widespread in most of the sugar beet growing areas in Iran. Since the control of this soil-borne disease is a difficult task, the use of resistant genotypes is known as the best measure against the disease. The ultimate goal of sugar beet breeders is to produce genotypes that can be used in both infected and non-infected fields without any reduction in terms of yield and quality. Twenty-one sugar beet genotypes along with four controls were evaluated in randomized complete block design with four replications in fields with natural infection to rhizomania in five research stations. Important sugar beet traits including root yield, sugar yield, sugar content, and white sugar yield were evaluated for two years (2021 and 2022). For all traits, location was the main source of variation that spanned 33 to 55% of the total sum of the square followed by the location×year×genotype accounted for 3–40% of the variation. Based on the results of analysis of variance, multivariate stability parameters were computed to evaluate the genotypes’ stability. The first two principal components (IPCA1 and IPCA2) generated by GGE biplot contributed for 31.3 and 17.5% difference in genotype×environment interaction for root yield, respectively. According to the GGE biplot, genotypes RM-11 and RM-12 were identified as the winning genotypes across environments for both root yield and white sugar yield traits whereas AMMI model identified RM-14 and RM-9 (for root yield) and RM-1 (for white sugar yield) as best genotypes. Based on the ideal genotype ranking, RM-11 and RM-10 were the best performer with a high mean yield as well as stability in the studied environments. The biplot rendered using the weighted average of absolute scores (WAASB) and root yield and white sugar yield identified RM-11 and RM-9 as superior genotypes in terms of yield and stability. The selected genotypes can be used in breeding programs to transfer the disease resistance and cultivar development.

Abstract Raspberries (RBs) (Rubus idaeus) are rich in bioactive compounds with promising anticancer properties. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the anticancer effects of RBs, highlighting their potential as natural agents in cancer prevention and therapy. Bioactive compounds in RBs induce apoptosis, arrest the cell cycle, inhibit angiogenesis, and suppress metastasis. Preclinical studies demonstrate significant anticancer effects against colon, breast, lung, prostate, and cervical cancers, with clinical studies also supporting their therapeutic potential. Although preclinical findings are encouraging, further large‐scale clinical trials are needed to confirm their efficacy and safety in humans. Optimizing formulations to enhance bioavailability and therapeutic effectiveness is crucial. This review emphasizes the potential of dietary interventions involving RBs as a complementary approach to conventional cancer therapies, paving the way for future research and clinical innovations.

Abstract Angiogenesis, vital for tumor growth and metastasis, is a promising target in cancer therapy. Natural compounds offer potential as antiangiogenic agents with reduced toxicity. This review provides a comprehensive overview of natural product‐based antiangiogenic therapies, focusing on molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential. A systematic search identified relevant articles from 2019 to 2023. Various natural compounds, including polyphenols, terpenes, alkaloids, cannabinoids, omega‐3 fatty acids, polysaccharides, proteins, and carotenoids, were investigated for their antiangiogenic properties. Challenges such as dose standardization, routes of administration, and potential side effects remain. Further studies, including in‐depth animal models and human epidemiological studies, must elucidate clinical efficacy and safety. Synergistic effects with current antiangiogenic therapies, such as bevacizumab and tyrosine kinase inhibitors, should be explored. Additionally, the potential hormone‐dependent effects of compounds like genistein highlight the need for safety evaluation. In conclusion, natural products hold promise as adjunctive therapies to conventional antineoplastic drugs in modulating angiogenesis in cancer. However, robust clinical trials are needed to validate preclinical findings and ensure safety and efficacy.

Introduction: Protecting the privacy of internet customers is crucial in the field of health. In this area, there is sensitive and personal information, and privacy can increase customers’ trust in companies and create a stronger relationship between them.Methods: The target sample was chosen using a criterion-oriented purposeful sampling method. The sampling procedure was continued until the theoretical saturation of data was reached. Accordingly, 12 professors and administrators participated in the study. The data collection tool was a semi-structured interview. Nvivo software was used for theme analysis.Results: Based on the theme analysis method, two constructive themes of level one and 14 themes of level two were identified. Constructive themes of level one were technological infrastructure and obligations of the seller to the consumer. The themes of technological infrastructure were personalization services, social interaction performance, access control, information technology security, security enforcement measures, safety algorithm and data-based planning, and decision making. The constructive themes of the seller’s obligations to the consumer were awareness, user and seller education, safety, maintenance and support of information, responsibility, framework and principles, and trust.Conclusion: The proposed model showed that privacy protection was essential. Medical device businesses should implement a robust privacy policy, closely monitoring access, training employees on privacy protection, and upgrading security systems.

There is a significant increase in the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) by infertile patients.This study aimed to assess the prevalence of CAM use by infertile patients. This review was conducted based on thePreferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The required data were obtainedby searching English databases (PubMed and Web of Science) as well as Google Scholar as an additional sourceof records. We included cross-sectional studies published in English journals up to March 2023 that examined theprevalence of CAM use among infertile patients in different countries. The retrieved articles were independentlyassessed by two reviewers. Discrepancies were resolved by discussion with the intent to reach a consensus. Wereviewed 1192 documents. From these, 29 studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Theresults of meta-analysis conducted on 32, 804 infertile patients showed a prevalence rate of CAM use between26.3% [95% confidence interval (CI): 21.7%-31.3%] and 96.1% (95% CI: 95.7%-96.5%) in various countries. Thepooled prevalence rate calculated by the random effects model showed that, overall, 54% (95% CI: 46%-61%) ofboth infertile women and men used CAM, whereas 55% (95% CI: 47%-67%) of infertile women and 29% (95%CI: 17%-41%) of infertile men reported treatment with CAM. More than half of the infertile patients used CAM.Therefore, healthcare practitioners need to be aware of this practice to better provide care for infertile patients.Further studies should examine the reasons for CAM use by infertile patients.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive type of lymphoma, particularly affecting HIV-positive and immunocompromised individuals, with a median diagnosis age of 49 years. Cases of this malignancy in HIV-negative individuals are less common and rarely involve the bone marrow. While traditional chemotherapy regimens such as cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (CHOP) were previously utilized in the management of such malignancy, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network currently recommends more intensive approaches. We present a rare stage IV Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)-positive PBL with a nasal cavity tumor extending into the left orbital sinus and encapsulating segments of the optic nerve in a 38-year-old young immunocompetent adult, without a significant past medical history. Treatment consisted of 6 cycles of Bortezomib in combination with dose-adjusted EPOCH (etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin) and intrathecal methotrexate which exhibited significant clinical and radiological improvement suggesting the potential efficacy of this regimen. Vision returned to baseline, the mass size reduced significantly, and headaches improved. Given this outcome, it is highly encouraged to emphasize the need for further exploration of this treatment in larger clinical trials.

Background and Objective: The therapeutic outcomes of amblyopia after the age range of 8-10 years are poor, and amblyopia in older individuals is resistant to treatment. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), among the efforts intended to modulate cortical excitability in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, has been believed to be associated with a specific disease. This study aimed to determine the effect of rTMS on the treatment of treatment-resistant amblyopia in adult patients. Methods: This clinical trial was conducted on 16 patients (12 males and 4 females) with unilateral amblyopia, with a mean age of 30±5 years referring to the clinics of Khatam al-Anbia Eye Hospital, Mashhad, Iran, during 2016-17. Patients were randomly selected from those with unilateral amblyopia (refractive, strabismic, or mixed) who had not responded to conventional treatments (patching or penalization). The healthy eye was considered a control. The therapeutic intervention consisted of four rTMS sessions at two-week intervals. Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity were measured and compared three times: Before the intervention, at the first session of intervention, and at the fourth session of intervention. Results: The mean visual acuity at baseline (0.36±0.19) was not significantly different compared to the first treatment session (0.41±0.1); however, a significant increase was observed compared to the fourth session (0.45±0.23) (P

Abstract In preclinical studies, p53 loss of function impacts chemotherapy response, but this has not been consistently validated clinically. We trained a TP53-loss phenocopy gene expression signature from pan-cancer clinical samples in the TCGA. In vitro, the TP53-loss phenocopy signature predicted chemotherapy response across cancer types. In a clinical dataset of 3003 breast cancer samples treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, the TP53-loss phenocopy samples were 56% more likely to have a pathologic complete response (pCR), with a significant association between TP53-loss phenocopy and pCR in both ER positive and ER negative tumors. In an independent clinical validation in the I-SPY2 trial (N = 987), we confirmed the association with neoadjuvant chemotherapy pCR and found higher rates of chemoimmunotherapy response in TP53-loss phenocopy tumors compared to non-TP53-loss phenocopy tumors (64% vs. 28%). The TP53-loss phenocopy signature predicts chemotherapy response across cancer types in vitro, and in a proof-of-concept clinical validation is associated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy response across multiple clinical breast cancer cohorts.

Abstract Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and progression to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) exhibits distinct molecular and immune characteristics. These traits are influenced by multiple factors, including the gut microbiome, which interacts with the liver through the "gut–liver axis". This bidirectional relationship between the gut and its microbiota and the liver plays a key role in driving various liver diseases, with microbial metabolites and immune responses being central to these processes. Our review consolidates the latest research on how gut microbiota contributes to MASH development and its progression to HCC, emphasizing new diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities. We performed a comprehensive literature review across PubMed/MedLine, Scopus, and Web of Science from January 2000 to August 2024, focusing on both preclinical and clinical studies that investigate the gut microbiota’s roles in MASH and HCC. This includes research on pathogenesis, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic advancements related to the gut microbiota. This evidence emphasizes the critical role of the gut microbiome in the pathogenesis of MASH and HCC, highlighting the need for further clinical studies and trials. This is to refine diagnostic techniques and develop targeted therapies that exploit the microbiome’s capabilities, aiming to enhance patient care in liver diseases.

Abstract Glypican-3 (GPC-3) is predominantly found in the placenta and fetal liver, with limited expression in adult tissues. Its re-expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and secretion into the serum highlights its potential as a diagnostic marker. GPC-3 is involved in important cellular processes such as proliferation, metastasis, apoptosis, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition through various signaling pathways including Wnt, IGF, YAP, and Hedgehog. To review the structure, biosynthesis, and post-translational modifications of GPC-3, and to elucidate its signaling mechanisms and role as a pro-proliferative protein in HCC, emphasizing its diagnostic and therapeutic potential. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, focusing on the expression of GPC-3 in various tumors, with a special emphasis on HCC. The review synthesized findings from experimental studies and clinical trials, analyzing the overexpression of GPC-3 in HCC, its differentiation from other liver diseases, and its potential as a diagnostic and therapeutic target. GPC-3 overexpression in HCC is linked to aggressive tumor behavior and poor prognosis, including shorter overall and disease-free survival. Additionally, GPC-3 has emerged as a promising therapeutic target. Ongoing investigations, including immunotherapies such as monoclonal antibodies and CAR-T cell therapies, demonstrate potential in inhibiting tumor growth and improving clinical outcomes. The review details the multifaceted roles of GPC-3 in tumorigenesis, including its impact on tumor-associated macrophages, glucose metabolism, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition, all contributing to HCC progression. GPC-3’s re-expression in HCC and its involvement in key tumorigenic processes underscore its value as a biomarker for early diagnosis and a target for therapeutic intervention. Further research is warranted to fully exploit GPC-3’s diagnostic and therapeutic potential in HCC management.

Abstract Background Chronic abdominal pain is a potential symptom of lead poisoning, which is often challenging to diagnose. This case–control study aimed to evaluate blood lead levels in pediatric patients with chronic abdominal pain. Methods The case–control study was conducted on 190 pediatrics who presented to the Children's Medical Center Hospital clinics, Tehran between April 2021- 2023. The children were divided into two groups: the case group, consisting of 81 patients with chronic abdominal pain, and the matched control group; 109 children without any gastrointestinal symptoms. The statistical analysis of the data was performed using STATA 16. A multiple logistic regression model was used to assess the association of different independent variables with chronic abdominal pain. Results There was no significant difference between mean (± standard deviation [SD]) of age (8.80(2.7) years vs. control group: 9.23(3.9) years), sex, and BMI (16.55(4.6) vs. 17.32(4.7)) of the patients with chronic abdominal pain (case group) and the control group, whereas the mean weight was remarkably low in patients with chronic abdominal pain: 27.25(± 12.1) kg vs. 31.70(± 14.7) kg (P value = 0.028). Fifty-nine percent of children with chronic abdominal pain had serum lead levels ≥ 10 µg/dL. The mean (SD) of blood lead levels was statistically high in the case group: 11.09 (± 5.35) µg/dL vs. control group: 8.26 (± 5.01) µg/dL) (P value ≤ 0.05). The appetite level was significantly low in the case group: 3.8 (± 2.5) vs. control group 5.4 (± 1.3). Conclusions Lead poisoning could be a possible cause of children's chronic abdominal pain. Regarding the high rate of lead poisoning in children exerting appropriate measures to reduce their exposure to lead is necessary.

Abstract The antioxidant activity of curry leaves is of interest because oxidative stress is implicated in a variety of diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. By scavenging free radicals and inhibiting lipid peroxidation, antioxidants can help protect cells from damage and reduce the risk of these diseases. Overall, in-silico studies suggest that curry leaves and their bioactive compounds have potent antioxidant activity. The objective of the study was to assess the antioxidant activity of the bioactive molecules from Murraya koenigii and anticipate the toxicity by in-silico research. iGEMDOCK software was used to assess the antioxidant activity. ProTox II software was used to conduct the toxicity investigations. Osthol (− 81.4863, − 81.9046 kcal/mol), mukoenineA (− 81.0417, − 78.9941 kcal/mol), murrayone(− 80.0731, − 78.9453 kcal/mol), kaempferol (− 97.0774, − 89.3534 kcal/mol), and apigenin (− 89.5291, − 108.704 kcal/mol) were found to have the highest binding energies with SOD and GPx proteins, respectively, when compared with standard (ascorbic acid; − 81.132, − 98.917 kcal/mol). All the mentioned compounds have low levels of hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity, immunotoxicity, mutagenicity, and cytotoxicity. The bioactive molecules of Murraya koenigii have a potent antioxidant effect and low level of toxicity that gives valuable insight for optimizing lead molecules to combat free radical generation or oxidation.

Abstract Background Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is widely recommended for short-term benefits in chronic respiratory diseases, yet long-term outcomes remain uncertain. This retrospective cohort study addresses this gap, comparing 20-year mortality rates between PR participants and matched controls, and hypothesizing that the short-term benefits of PR contribute to improved long-term survival. Methods The 20-year mortality of stable chronic respiratory patients who participated in an outpatient PR program was compared with a matched control group based on the type of lung disease. Demographic and clinical variables, and the dates of deaths, were extracted and compared between two groups with two sample t-test and chi-square tests. Kaplan-Meier plots and Cox regression analyses were employed to evaluate survival differences. Results Between 2000 and 2002, 238 individuals enrolled in a pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) program (58% male, mean age ± SD: 69 ± 8 years, mean FEV1% predicted ± SD: 46 ± 21%). Abstract Background Motivation is a critical factor in the success of nursing students, as it significantly influences their ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for the nursing profession. Insufficient motivation can result in a lack of engagement with learning activities, thereby impeding the development of essential competencies. Aim This study aimed to translate the Motivation for Nursing Student Scale (MNSS) into Persian and evaluate its psychometric properties within the context of nursing students in Iran. Method This methodological cross-sectional study involved a sample of 542 nursing students selected through convenience sampling. The MNSS was translated into Persian following the guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and assessments of internal consistency were conducted to evaluate the validity and reliability of the instrument. Results The EFA and CFA validated the structure of the instrument, identifying four factors and 20 items, which explained 58.68% of the total variance. The CFA results indicated a well-fitting model with the following indices: CFI = 0.91, GFI = 0.93, IFI = 0.946, TLI = 0.92, RMSEA = 0.061, and SRMR = 0.049. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) for the scale were 0.882 and 0.802, respectively. Conclusion The Persian version of the MNSS demonstrates satisfactory reliability and validity, making it a dependable instrument for measuring the academic motivation of nursing students. This tool can be effectively used to assess the motivation of nursing students in Iran.

Abstract Dominant X-linked diseases are uncommon due to female X chromosome inactivation (XCI). While random XCI usually protects females against X-linked mutations, Rett syndrome (RTT) is a female neurodevelopmental disorder caused by heterozygous MECP2 mutation. After 6-18 months of typical neurodevelopment, RTT girls undergo a poorly understood regression. We performed longitudinal snRNA-seq on cerebral cortex in a construct-relevant Mecp2e1 mutant mouse model of RTT, revealing transcriptional effects of cell type, mosaicism, and sex on progressive disease phenotypes. Across cell types, we observed sex differences in the number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with 6x more DEGs in mutant females than males. Unlike males, female DEGs emerged prior to symptoms, were enriched for homeostatic gene pathways in distinct cell types over time and correlated with disease phenotypes and human RTT cortical cell transcriptomes. Non-cell-autonomous effects were prominent and dynamic across disease progression of Mecp2e1 mutant females, indicating that wild-type-expressing cells normalize transcriptional homeostasis. These results advance our understanding of RTT progression and treatment.

Abstract Introduction People who inject drugs (PWID) are a key population at risk of HIV in Iran. We measured the prevalence and covariates of HIV-related risk behaviours among PWID in Iran. Methods We conducted a respondent-driven bio-behavioural surveillance survey among PWID from July 2019 to March 2020 in 11 major cities. We assessed PWID’s recent (i.e., last three months) HIV-related risk behaviours using a four-level categorical variable: Only unsafe injection (i.e., sharing needles/syringes or injecting equipment), only unsafe sex (i.e., unprotected sex), dual HIV risk (i.e., both unsafe injection and unprotected sex), and safe injection and sex. Data were summarized using RDS-weighted analysis. Multinomial logistic regression models were built to characterize HIV-related risk behaviours and relative risk ratio (RRR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were reported. Results Overall, 2562 men who inject drugs (MWID) were included in the regression analysis. The RDS-weighted prevalence of dual HIV risk was 1.3% (95% CI: 0.8, 1.9), only unsafe injection was 4.5%, and only unsafe sex was 11.8%. Compared to the safe injection and sex group, dual HIV risk was significantly and positively associated with multiple partnership (RRR = 15.06; 3.30, 68.73). Only unsafe injection was significantly associated with homelessness in the last 12 months (RRR: 3.02; 95% CI: 1.34, 6.80). Only unsafe sex was significantly associated with multiple partnership (RRR = 6.66; 4.27, 10.38), receiving free condoms (RRR = 1.71; 1.01, 2.89), receiving free needles (RRR = 2.18; 1.22, 3.90), and self-received risk for HIV (RRR = 2.51; 1.36, 4.66). Moreover, history of HIV-testing in the last three months was significantly associated with only unsafe injection (RRR = 2.71; 1.84, 3.80). Among the 90 women who injected drugs, none reported dual HIV risk behaviours. Discussion and conclusions While the low prevalence of dual HIV risk among PWID is encouraging, unprotected sexual practices among PWID is concerning. Expanding sexual health education and care services as well as tailored interventions aimed at reducing high-risk sexual activities among PWID are warranted. Additionally, tackling potential misperceptions about risk of HIV transmission among PWID in Iran is warranted.

Abstract Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) have been implicated as a tumor microenvironment (TME) cell population, which may be playing a vital role in the inhibition of effective T cell responses in the prostate TME. In this manuscript, we leverage a novel microscale cell culture platform, known as Stacks, to investigate mono-, co-, and tri-culture TME models comprised of prostate tumor cell lines, primary macrophages, and autologous T cells from patients with prostate cancer. Through multiplexed analysis of these multi-cellular prostate tumor models, we capture a dynamic interaction between primary TAMs and activated T cells that resulted in reciprocal proinflammatory activation of both cell populations upon interaction. These findings suggest that activated T cells are capable of reprogramming immunosuppressive TAMs in the context of prostate tumor models and that TAM reprogramming may play a key supportive role in restoring proinflammatory T cell tumor responses in the prostate TME.

Abstract This study aimed to design sustained released biodegradable calcium carbonate nanoparticles loaded with chlorhexidine (CHX-loaded NPs) and to investigate the early osteogenic differentiation and antimicrobial effects on the important bacteria involved in infections of dental implants. The microemulsion method was used to prepare the calcium carbonate nanoparticles loaded with chlorhexidine. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized using conventional methods. The release pattern determination and the biodegradation test were performed for the prepared nanoparticles. For the early osteogenic differentiation test of the prepared nanoparticles, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was detected in human dental pulp stem cells (HDPSCs). The antimicrobial effects of the nanoparticles were evaluated against Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The sizes of free calcium carbonate nanoparticles and CHX-loaded NPs were 105 ± 1.63 and 118 ± 1.47 nm and their zeta potentials were − 27 and − 36, respectively. A 50% degradation of nanoparticles was achieved after 100 days. These nanoparticles showed a two-stage sustained release pattern in vitro. Microscopic images revealed that the morphology of free calcium carbonate nanoparticles primarily took on a spherical calcite form, while CHX-loaded NPs predominantly exhibited a cauliflower-like vaterite polymorph. Extended Abstract Background: Forest fire is very common in all ecosystems of the world that affects both vegetation and soil and is also helpful in maintaining the diversity and stability of ecosystems. The effect of forest fires and prescribed fires on forest soil is very complex. It affects the organic matter, macro and micronutrients, and physical properties of soil, such as texture, color, pH, and bulk density, as well as soil biota. Fire is a natural factor in the forest that temporarily reduces the vegetation on the soil surface. After a fire, the soil can experience long-term, medium-term, and short-term changes, which are different depending on the type of soil characteristics, weather conditions, duration, intensity, and frequency of the fire. The Zagros forest ecosystem is generally in the coppice form, and these forests are not safe from fire, which constantly affects them. Considering that the long-term stability of these forests depends on maintaining the soil quality, it is essential to investigate the effects of fire on soil properties. This study aimed to investigate the effect of fire on Zagros forests in Kermanshah province, Gahvareh city in the Lerini region. Methods: The studied area is a part of Zagros forests in Kermanshah province, Gahvareh city, the Lerini region located at 34° 10' 35″ E and 46° 34' 28″ N, with an average height of 1468 m above sea level. In this research, the points were determined by measuring with a meter on transects, and they were sampled regularly in specific time intervals (October, November, February, April, and June). The distance between the samples in each row was 20 m and the distance between the rows was 50 m, and three rows were determined in each of the burnt and control areas. Some soil characteristics, such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon, absorbable phosphorus, soil respiration, microbial biomass carbon, substrate-induced respiration, and metabolic quotient, were measured in soil samples. The effect of the treatments on all measured variables was investigated by the two-way ANOVA. Means were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Data were analyzed using the Windows version of SAS (version 9.4, SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). Results: The soil pH decreased with the passage of time and a decrease in air temperature under the crown (unburnt and burned) and outside the unburnt crown. An upward trend in the pH of the soil in these three places occurred after the cold season. The soil pH ranged from 7.31 to 7.66 in all treatments from October to June. The results of the two-way ANOVA showed that the fire and sampling location did not affect the soil EC in different months of sampling. The amount of absorbable phosphorus increased with the occurrence of fire. The highest and lowest amounts of absorbable phosphorus occurred under and outside the burnt and the control crowns, respectively. The range of organic carbon changes indicates that soil organic carbon has increased over time in all treatments. The highest and the lowest increases were observed under the burnt (1.51%) and the control (unburned) crowns, respectively. Examining the changes indicates that the basic soil respiration was high at the beginning of the fire but decreased gradually, and then the initial value also increased in the last months of sampling. In this research, the amount of basic respiration in the soil of burned areas is not higher than that of unburned areas despite the occurrence of fire and the negative effect on soil organic carbon. According to the results, the amount of substrate-induced respiration decreases under and outside the crown (burnt and control) with the passage of time and the decrease in temperature. According to the ANOVA results, the effects of fire and the sampling location were significant on the microbial metabolic quotient of the soil, although no significant interaction effects on the microbial metabolic quotient were observed in February and June. The highest and the lowest microbial metabolic quotients were measured under (0.94 mg C/mg MBC.day) and outside (0.26 mg C/mg MBC.day) the unburned crown, respectively. With the passage of time and a decrease in temperature, the amount of this parameter decreased in the treatment under the crown of the unburnt area and increased in the three treatments under and outside the burned crown and outside the unburnt crown. At the end of the period, the highest and the lowest microbial metabolic quotients were measured under (0.72 mg C/ mg MBC. day) and outside (0.59 mg C/ mg MBC. day) the crown of the burned area, respectively. Conclusion: The results showed that the fire was superficial in both places under and outside the crown and did not significantly affect the soil’s chemical and biological characteristics. Therefore, no significant changes occurred in indicators such as soil organic carbon and EC, and the fire only increased phosphorus in the burned areas compared to the control. Due to the occurrence of surface fire, combustion did not significantly increase biological indicators. The results of this research demonstrate that the fire changes the soil’s chemical and biological characteristics when it occurs with a higher intensity and at a higher temperature.

Abstract Background Emotional eating (EE) is particularly prevalent in overweight or obese women, who may turn to food as a way to cope with stress, sadness, or anxiety. Limited research has been conducted on the association between EE and nutritional intake. Therefore, present study was designed to explore this association in adult women with overweight and obesity. Methods In this cross-sectional study, the relationship between EE and nutritional intake in 303 overweight and obese women (aged 18–50 years) was examined. The researchers used the validated semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) to assess participants’ nutritional intake and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) to evaluate their eating behavior. To determine the association between EE and nutritional intake, we employed the multiple linear regression analysis. Results The frequency of high intensity EE was 64.4% among the study participants and the mean total score of EE subscale of DBEQ was 2.32 ± 0.81. The total score of EE was positively associated with the energy intake (β = 0.396, P = 0.007), even after adjusting for age and BMI. In addition, a significant inverse association was found between the score of EE and the daily intake of calcium (β= -0.219, P = 0.026), riboflavin (β= -0.166, P = 0.043), and vitamin B12 (β= -0.271, P = 0.035), independent from energy and age. Also the results showed a significant positive association between the score of EE and the frequency of daily intake of cracker, muffin, cake, cream cake, pastry, candy, ice cream, pickles, melon, hydrogenated vegetable oil, peanut, salted and roasted seeds, and corn-cheese puff snack. Conclusion This study found that overweight or obese women with higher intensity of EE might have a higher intake of energy and a lower intake of dietary calcium, riboflavin and vitamin B12. Integrating a balanced diet with psychotherapy is suggested to help individuals with EE reducing the urge to eat in response to emotions.

Abstract Dogs are the primary reservoirs of Leishmania infantum (L. infantum), but Leishmania tropica (L. tropica) infection is also possible in dogs and can transmitted to humans. The southeast of Iran experiences a high prevalence of canine leishmaniasis (CanL), and veterinarians frequently encounter symptomatic cases. Therefore, from December 2017 to November 2022, the present case series was designed to assess the prevalence of CanL in owned dogs with cutaneous manifestations resembling CanL. A total of 500 owned dogs with dermal lesions from two endemic cities, Zabol and Kerman, were enrolled. Impression smears from skin lesions and popliteal lymph nodes were prepared from all cases, whereas blood samples were gathered from amastigote-positive dogs for serological and molecular surveys. Commercial ELISA was done on sera samples, and two-step nested PCR was used on extracted DNA to amplify variable fragments of the Leishmania species’ kinetoplast DNA (kDNA). Leishman bodies were microscopically detected in 7.2% (36/500) of dermal smears. Of the 360 owned dogs from Zabol, 2 have been diagnosed with L. tropica, and 10 have been diagnosed with L. infantum. Out of 140 owned dogs from Kerman, 8 were identified with L. tropica infection, and 16 were infected with L. infantum. Molecular results revealed the presence of 750 full dual-band bases related to the L. tropica species in 10/36 (27.7%) cases, which showed a considerable increase in canine cutaneous leishmaniosis compared with previous studies in southeastern Iran. The noticeable prevalence of L. tropica in owned dogs indicated that the dog’s role in cutaneous leishmaniosis should be re-evaluated as a possible animal reservoir in endemic areas.

Background: There is a lack of summarized reports of the relationship between dietary acid load (DAL) and bone health in post-menopausal women. Therefore, we aimed to design a systematic review and summarize eligible studies evaluating this association.Methods: The present study was a systematic review. From the literature search on PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Medline until March 2020, six studies comprising 2 crosssectionals, 2 cohorts, and 2 randomized control trials were selected and included in this study.Results: Four studies revealed a significant correlation between DAL and osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. In two reviewed studies, a significant association was seen between DAL and BMD, but in this association was not obtained in n another study. In addition, out of two randomized clinical studies (RCTs), one showed positive changes in bone markers when PRAL was decreased; however, no change was obtained in another RCT.Conclusion: The present study showed that post-menopausal women, especially those with a fracture history, may have a greater susceptibility to osteoporosis because of the detrimental effect of dietary acidity. In addition, DAL rather than protein might be the main risk factor for bone loss in this population. It should be noted that insufficient calcium intake may exacerbate bone loss following a high protein–high acid ash diet in these women.

It is well-known that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD) often exhibit behavioural and emotional problems. However, little is known about how these problems compare between the two groups of children. This study sought to fill this gap in knowledge by comparing the executive functions and behavioural-emotional problems of children with ADHD, SLD and typically developing children. For this study, 94 children were recruited through purposeful sampling (ADHD = 23, SLD = 30 and TD = 41). All participants were screened based on WISC-IV. Subsequently, participants were administered executive functions and behavioural problems questionnaires. The analysis of the data using MANOVA and Scheffe post hoc pairwise shows that children with ADHD and SLD had significantly higher scores on measures of executive function impairment than typically developing children. Our study revealed that children in the ADHD group scored significantly higher in social problems, aggressive behaviours, AD/HD problems, ODD, conduct problems and externalizing problems sub-tests. Conversely, the LD group demonstrated higher scores in the anxiety problems sub-test. Furthermore, our study demonstrated that children in the ADHD group scored significantly higher in the following sub-tests: metacognition, inhibit, shift, bri, shift and emotion control. In contrast, the LD group exhibited higher scores in the initiate sub-test. In addition, the two groups of children with disorders also exhibited more behavioural-emotional problems than typically developing children. These findings suggest that ADHD and SLD are associated with impaired executive function and increased behavioural-emotional problems. These findings have implications for the assessment and treatment of these disorders.

Many refugee children experience trauma in early childhood. Effective, tailored interventions are needed to improve refugee children's access to preventive mental health. We interviewed refugee-serving stakeholders and parents participating in an evidence-based preventive mental health and wellness intervention adapted for Afghan refugee children and families who may have experienced trauma. Interview guide development was informed by two implementation science frameworks: the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research and the Model for Adaptation Design and Impact. A three-person team coded transcripts via rapid qualitative analysis, and the study team reached consensus on themes. Six refugee-serving facilitators and five refugee parents discussed key determinants of successful implementation. Themes included: (i) modeling cultural humility to promote communication about emotions; (ii) needed linguistic support and referral networks to avoid miscommunications and missed communications; (iii) bridging connections between children, families and schools; (iv) different takeaways, or differing goals and expectations between facilitators and participants; and (v) timely, specific cultural considerations to overcome participation barriers. Overall, we found key determinants of successful implementation of a preventive mental health and wellness intervention for refugee children and families included adaptations to enhance cultural humility and sensitivity to cultural context while strengthening communication among facilitators, children and families.

Introduction: The family's emotional climate and resilience are among the protective factors against drug use by teenagers. Aim: The present study aimed to predict addiction susceptibility in male adolescents based on the family's emotional climate with the mediation of resilience. Methods: The research method was of the descriptive correlation type and the study's statistical population included all male students of public schools in Tehran in the first and second semesters of 2017-2018, from which 267 people were selected by multi-stage random sampling. The research tools included the Affective Family Climate Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Addiction Susceptibility Questionnaire-Adolescents Version. The data of the present research were analyzed using the structural equation modeling method and Imus software. Results: The present study's results showed that the family's emotional climate (β=-0.468, P=0.001) and resilience (β=-0.246, P=0.001) predict addiction susceptibility in male adolescents negatively and meaningfully. The family's emotional climate predicts addiction susceptibility in male adolescents through the mediation of resilience (β=0.083, P=0.001). Conclusion: The results of the present study emphasize the importance of the role of the family, both in terms of creating a favorable emotional climate and in terms of playing a role, as a suitable model in the emergence of behavior. It is suggested that parents also protect their children from the influence of peers and the use of tobacco and drugs by providing a suitable emotional climate.
