BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis is caused by Taenia solium larvae, the most common helminthic parasitic disease of the central nervous system. It is acquired by consuming food and water infected by eggs of the parasite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: we present 12 cases of patients operated at the Hospital General San Juan de Dios from Guatemala, from July 2012 to June 2017, with the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis. RESULTS: seven patients were female and 5 were male, with an age range of 2 to 63 years. Headache, projectile vomiting and difficulty walking were found among the most frequent symptoms. None presented eosinophilia. In the histological study, 1 was found in vesicular stage, 7 in vesicular-colloidal stage, 4 in granular-colloidal stage and none in calcified stage. CONCLUSIONS: neurocysticercosis is a prevalent disease in developing countries, so further study of cases is important to emphasize its prevalence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
