Children with autism spectrum disorder often have significant language delays. But do they learn language differently than neurotypical toddlers? We compared the lexical skills of 64 preverbal and minimally verbal children with autism spectrum disorder to 461 vocabulary-size-matched typically developing toddlers. We also examined social features of verb knowledge using a novel collection of social ratings. Children with autism spectrum disorder produced proportionally more verbs than typically developing toddlers. Children with autism spectrum disorder produced proportionally more action and food words, while typically developing toddlers produced proportionally more animal, people words, and animal sounds and sound effects. Children with autism spectrum disorder also produced "mommy" and "daddy" at lower rates. We discuss how these differences may reflect an association between lexical development and weaknesses in social communication.

Mechanisms of non-response to ustekinumab, a biologic targeting IL-23, are currently unclear. Here, the authors show that the transcriptional program regulated by IL-22, an IL-23 responsive cytokine, is enriched in patients with ulcerative colitis unresponsive to ustekinumab and associated with higher colon neutrophil recruitment and activation of upstream IL-22 regulators.

Recreational fishing, crucially important to Florida’s economy and ecosystems, can be affected by management decisions. Decisions that change the allowable harvest or the type of access to certain fishing areas are often expected to have strong effects on fishing effort, but the outcome of these actions is not always obvious. To provide greater insight into what may happen to fishing effort after management decisions, we describe case studies from the North American fisheries literature, some Florida-specific. These illustrate that the same or similar management actions (e.g., a more restrictive harvest policy) can have opposite effects on total fishing effort depending on the specifics of the case. We use this information as well as additional fisheries theory to explore a specific case study—what might happen if special harvest or access regulations were applied to a popular but ecologically and environmentally sensitive habitat—the St. Martins Marsh Aquatic Preserve in Citrus County, Florida.

One leading hypothesis for why we lose our hearing as we age is a decrease in ear metabolism. However, direct measurements of metabolism across a lifespan in any auditory system are lacking. Even if metabolism does decrease with age, a question remains: is a metabolic decrease a cause of age-related auditory decline or simply correlative? We use an insect, the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria, as a physiologically versatile model to understand how cellular metabolism correlates with age and impacts on age-related auditory decline. We found that auditory organ metabolism decreases with age as measured fluorometrically. Next, we measured the individual auditory organ’s metabolic rate and its sound-evoked nerve activity and found no correlation. We found no age-related change in auditory nerve activity, using hook electrode recordings, and in the electrophysiological properties of auditory neurons, using patch-clamp electrophysiology, but transduction channel activity decreased. To further test for a causative role of the metabolic rate in auditory decline, we manipulated metabolism of the auditory organ through diet and cold-rearing but found no difference in sound-evoked nerve activity. We found that although metabolism correlates with age-related auditory decline, it is not causative. Finally, we performed RNA-Seq on the auditory organs of young and old locusts, and whilst we found enrichment for Gene Ontology terms associated with metabolism, we also found enrichment for a number of additional aging GO terms. We hypothesize that age-related hearing loss is dominated by accumulative damage in multiple cell types and multiple processes which outweighs its metabolic decline.
