Abstract

Background Determining treatment response for patients with hidradenitis suppurativa ( HS) can be challenging due to limitations of current disease activity evaluations. Objective Evaluate the novel, validated endpoint, Hidradenitis Suppurativa Clinical Response (Hi SCR) and its utility as an outcome measure. Methods Patients with baseline total abscess and inflammatory nodule count ( AN count) of at least three and draining fistula count of 20 or fewer comprised the post hoc subpopulation analysed. Hi SCR (at least a 50% reduction in total AN count, with no increase in abscess count, and no increase in draining fistula count relative to baseline) and HS- PGA Response [Hidradenitis Suppurativa-Physician's Global Assessment score of clear, minimal, or mild, with at least a 2-grade improvement from baseline] were used to evaluate patient response after adalimumab treatment weekly, every other week, or placebo (1 : 1 : 1). Results The subpopulation included 132 (85.7%) patients; 70.5% women and 73.5% white. At week 16, Hi SCR was achieved by 54.5% receiving weekly adalimumab, 33.3% every other week, and 25.6% placebo and HS- PGA Response was achieved by 20.5% receiving weekly adalimumab, 6.7% every other week and 2.3% placebo. Conclusion Hi SCR was more responsive to change than HS- PGA Response in this subpopulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Using a two-color ultrafast surface deflection spectroscopy, we demonstrate the time-resolved observation of acoustic phonon wave packets emitted from a single buried GaAs quantum well. A longitudinal acoustic phonon pulse is generated at a preselected depth within a highly confined region (>=10 nm thick) through the coherent nonequilibrium deforation potential which was previously unobserved in such structures. Subsequent detection with subpicosecond resolution at the surface resolves propagating high-wave-vector ballistic phonons and quasiballistic or "snake" phonons which subsequently merge into a quasidiffusive phonon pulse.

255. Detection of interstellar NH towards ζ Ophiuchi by means of ultra-high-resolution spectroscopy

We have obtained an ultra-high-resolution (0.38 km s−1 FWHM) spectrum of the R1 (0) (3358.053 Å) line of interstellar NH towards ζ Oph. These observations comprise the first detection of NH towards ζ Oph, and the third reported detection of this molecule by absorption-line spectroscopy towards any star. The equivalent width (0.36 ± 0.05 mÅ) corresponds to a column density of 8.8 ± 1.2 × 1011 cm−2. This is more than an order of magnitude higher than that expected on the basis of equilibrium gas-phase models, but is consistent with models incorporating grain-surface chemistry. The line profile is fully resolved, and has an intrinsic velocity dispersion characterized by b = 1.15 ± 0.12 km s−1. This is sufficiently narrow to exclude the possibility of hot NH formation through the endothermic reaction N + H2 → NH + H. There is evidence that the NH line is split into two velocity components (separation 1.26 ± 0.17 km s−1), with relative strengths mirroring those of the two CN components towards this star. We argue that this correlation also supports the case for grain surface reactions dominating the nitrogen chemistry of diffuse molecular clouds.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical utility of the serum concentration of feline trypsin-like immunoreactivity (fTLI), the plasma and urine concentrations of trypsinogen-activation peptide (TAP), and the ratio of the urine TAP and creatinine concentrations (TAP:Cr) in the diagnosis of feline acute pancreatitis. We used 13 healthy cats and 10 cats with a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. The mean serum fTLI and plasma TAP concentrations were significantly higher in the cats with acute pancreatitis than in the healthy cats (P < 0.05); the mean urine TAP concentrations and the median urine TAP:Cr ratios were not significantly different. Among the cats examined in this study, there was no benefit of plasma TAP over serum fTLI in the evaluation of suspected acute pancreatitis.

Abstract

The thickening of tailings to a higher-density paste gives a number of benefits, notably minimising environmental impacts, reducing water consumption and reducing tailings facility closure costs. Relatively minor changes to the solids content of the slurry can affect beaching behaviour, degree of segregation, position of the phreatic surface, amount of freeboard, consolidation behaviour, settled density, facility capacity and in-situ strength. Paste is a non-segregating slurry that reduces seepage, gives flexibility in landform selection and can be progressively rehabilitated. Ideally a paste production plant should be part of the initial design, but significant benefits can be gained by adding one later in the mine's life. Even a relatively minor failure can have a significant impact on the environment, often resulting in loss of agricultural potential, ground and surface water contamination and vegetation/wildlife mortality. Failure is seldom the result of a single cause, with several factors often contributing to breach of the outer wall. It is therefore helpful to use fault and event trees, which combine the causes and effects of the system logically, to ascertain the overall probability of failure and its consequences. Outer wall stability is crucial in controlling the risk of environmental contamination. It is influenced by geometry, overall slope angle, erosion control measures, material foundation strengths, rate of rise of the wall, underdrainage, propensity for layering, construction method, tailings characteristics and freeboard. Variations in these factors influence the overall risk. By using a fault tree for the dam in question, it is possible to carry out a sensitivity analysis that reveals the key areas determining the overall risk.
