Background: Ventricular septal defects (VSDs) are one of the mechanical complications of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Because of the high risks of mortality and postoperative complications, a new alternative method is needed. With the development of interventional medicine, transcatheter closure has been increasingly performed for postmyocardial infarction ventricular septal defects (PMIVSDs). The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility and safety of transcatheter closure of PMIVSDs by meta-analysis. Methods: The included studies were mainly single-arm studies of transcatheter closure of PMIVSDs. We compared VSD size, device size, preoperative risk factors and interventions among PMIVSD patients. We analysed the transcatheter closure success rate, the 30-day mortality rate, and the incidence of residual shunts. Results: A total of 12 single‐arm articles (284 patients) were included. The combined incidences of preoperative hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, and diabetes were 66% [95% CI 0.56–0.75], 54% [95% CI 0.40–0.68], and 33% [95% CI] 0.21–0.46], respectively. Multiple studies reported the combined incidences of preoperative PCI, IABP, and CABG, which were 46% [95% CI 0.15–0.80], 60% [95% CI 0.44–0.75], and 8% [95% CI 0.02–0.18]. Eleven studies reported the number of successful closures and the 30-day mortality rate; the success rate was 90% [95% CI 0.86–0.94], and the 30-day mortality rate reached 27% [95% CI 0.86–0.94]. Conclusion: For patients with PMIVSD, transcatheter closure in the acute phase can be used as a rescue measure, while in the chronic phase, it is more effective and has a lower mortality rate, but the effect of selection bias should be considered. Residual shunts are a long-term complication that have a high incidence and long-lasting effects on patients. More large, multicentre, randomized controlled trials are needed in the future to confirm the safety and reliability of transcatheter closure of PMIVSDs.

Numerous different species of LAB are used in different fields due to their unique characteristics. However, Lacticaseibacillus chiayiensis, a newly established species in 2018, has limited microorganism resources, and lacks comprehensive evaluations of its properties. In this study, L. chiayiensis AACE3, isolated from fermented blueberry, was evaluated by genomic analysis and in vitro assays of the properties. The genome identified genes associated with biofilm formation (luxS, ccpA, brpA), resistance to oxidative stress (tpx, trxA, trxB, hslO), tolerance to acidic conditions (dltA, dltC), resistance to unfavorable osmotic pressure (opuBB, gbuA, gbuB, gbuC), and adhesion (luxS, dltA, dltC). The AACE3 showed 112 unique genes, relative to the other three L. chiayiensis strains. Among them, the presence of genes such as clpP, pepO, and feoA suggests a possible advantage of AACE3 over other L. chiayiensis in terms of environmental adaptation. In vitro evaluation of the properties revealed that AACE3 had robust antibacterial activity against eight common pathogens: Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella choleraesuis, Shigella flexneri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. In addition, AACE3 showed more than 80% survival rate in all tests simulating gastrointestinal fluid, and it exhibited high antioxidant capacity. Interestingly, the cell culture supernatant was superior to intact organisms and ultrasonically crushed bacterial extracts in all tests of antioxidant capacity. These results suggested that the antioxidant capacity may originate from certain metabolites and extracellular enzymes produced by AACE3. Moreover, AACE3 was a moderate biofilm producer due to the self-agglomeration effect. Taken together, L. chiayiensis AACE3 appears to be a candidate strain for combating the growing incidence of pathogen infections and antioxidant production.

Herein, recent advances, current limitations, and open challenges in the design, modeling, and control of continuum robots are discussed. Thanks to their lean bodies, these robots achieve a long reach through narrow and tortuous environments, enabling currently unachievable tasks for medical, industrial, and service applications. The recent surge in research on these robots leads to significant advances in design, modeling, and control methods. Herein, these developments with a comprehensive review of existing continuum robots and emerging technologies are examined. Then, modeling and control approaches are compared, and navigation strategies exclusive to continuum robots, such as follow the leader, coiling, and circumnutation are examined. Finally, an overview of their applications is provided with a focus on industrial and service tasks, outlining open research challenges and future developments.

BackgroundImmune checkpoint inhibition holds promise as a novel treatment for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The clinical significance of soluble immune checkpoint (ICK) related proteins have not yet fully explored in PDAC.MethodsWe comprehensively profiled 14 soluble ICK-related proteins in plasma in 70 PDAC patients and 70 matched healthy controls. Epidemiological data of all subjects were obtained through structured interviews, and patients’ clinical data were retrieved from electronical health records. We evaluated the associations between the biomarkers with the risk of PDAC using unconditional multivariate logistic regression. Consensus clustering (k-means algorithm) with significant biomarkers was performed to identify immune subtypes in PDAC patients. Prediction models for overall survival (OS) in PDAC patients were developed using multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression. Harrell’s concordance index (C-index), time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and calibration curve were utilized to evaluate performance of prediction models. Gene expressions of the identified ICK-related proteins in tumors from TCGA were analyzed to provide insight into underlying mechanisms.ResultsSoluble BTLA, CD28, CD137, GITR and LAG-3 were significantly upregulated in PDAC patients (all q < 0.05), and elevation of each of them was correlated with PDAC increased risk (all p < 0.05). PDAC patients were classified into soluble immune-high and soluble immune-low subtypes, using these 5 biomarkers. Patients in soluble immune-high subtype had significantly poorer OS than those in soluble immune-low subtype (log-rank p = 9.7E-03). The model with clinical variables and soluble immune subtypes had excellent predictive power (C-index = 0.809) for the OS of PDAC patients. Furthermore, the immune subtypes identified with corresponding genes’ expression in PDAC tumor samples in TCGA showed an opposite correlation with OS to that of immune subtypes based on blood soluble ICK-related proteins (log-rank p =0.02). The immune-high subtype tumors displayed higher cytolytic activity (CYT) score than immune-low subtype tumors (p < 2E-16).ConclusionFive soluble ICK-related proteins were identified to be significantly associated with the risk and prognosis of PDAC. Patients who were classified as soluble immune-low subtype based on these biomarkers had better overall survival than those of the soluble immune-high subtype.

Polyethylene (PE) is the most heavily used polymer worldwide. Theoretically, PE can be further enhanced by methods such as increasing the molecular weight or moderate cross-linking, however these changes lead to increased viscosity and difficulty for processing PE in the molten state, bringing problems such as decreased production efficiency and greater difficulty in recycling. An important research direction has focused on combining the easy processing and mechanical strength of PE. In this study, long-branched polyethylene containing reversible boronic esters bonds (B–O bonds) was prepared by graft copolymerization, and then PE vitrimers were prepared by a complex decomposition reaction with bis(dioxaborolane) crosslinker. This method can directly convert non-functional conventional plastics into dynamic covalent polymers through reactive processing imparting higher tensile strength, Young's modulus, and better heat resistance to PE. The PE vitrimers is demonstrated to have good melt processability based on dynamic B–O bond exchange, uniting strong mechanical and thermomechanical properties with excellent reproducible processability. This work introduces a new way of recycling and reusing traditional plastic and rubber products.

The rational design of electrode materials plays an important role in the development of supercapacitors. Although CoNi-based phosphate as active material for supercapacitor shows great potential including high theoretical capacitance, low cost, and environmental friendliness, the further investigation of CoNi-based phosphate with structural design to achieve high performance is of great urgent. In this work, hierarchical CoNi-based phosphates sandwiched Ni are directly grown on carbon cloth (CC@CoNi-PO/Ni/CoNi-PO) as freestanding electrode for supercapacitors. The introduction of Ni into hierarchical CoNi-based phosphates with abundant redox active sites can improve the integral electrochemical performance. In three-electrode system, the CC@CoNi-PO/Ni/CoNi-PO sustains a cycling stability of 94.7% after 1000 cycle (20 mV s−1), which is better than those of CC@CoNi-PO (85.9%) and CC@CoNi-PO/CoNi-PO (91.8 %). Matched with activated carbon as negative electrode, the hybrid supercapacitor delivers considerable stability of 88.3% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles at 100 mA cm−2.

Moth mouthparts, consisting of labial palps and proboscis, not only are the feeding device but also are chemosensory organs for the detection of chemical signals from surrounding environment. Up to now, the chemosensory systems in the mouthpart of moths are largely unknown. Here, we performed systematic analyses of the mouthpart transcriptome of adult Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a notorious pest that spreads worldwide. A total of 48 chemoreceptors, including 29 odorant receptors (ORs), 9 gustatory receptors (GRs), and 10 ionotropic receptors (IRs), were annotated. Further phylogenetic analyses with these genes and homologs from other insect species determined that specific genes, including ORco, carbon dioxide receptors, pheromone receptor, IR co-receptors, and sugar receptors, were transcribed in the mouthpart of S. frugiperda adults. Subsequently, expression profiling in different chemosensory tissues demonstrated that the annotated ORs and IRs were mainly expressed in S. frugiperda antennae, but one IR was also highly expressed in the mouthparts. In comparison, SfruGRs were mainly expressed in the mouthparts, but 3 GRs were also highly expressed in the antennae or the legs. Further comparison of the mouthpart-biased chemoreceptors using RT-qPCR revealed that the expression of these genes varied significantly between labial palps and proboscises. This study provides the first large-scale description of chemoreceptors in the mouthpart of adult S. frugiperda and provides a foundation for further functional studies of chemoreceptors in the mouthpart of S. frugiperda as well as of other moth species.

IntroductionOsteoporosis (OP) is primarily diagnosed through bone mineral density (BMD) measurements, and it often leads to fracture. Observational studies suggest that several mental diseases (MDs) may be linked to OP, but the causal direction of these associations remain unclear. This study aims to explore the potential causal association between five MDs (Schizophrenia, Depression, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Epilepsy) and the risk of OP.MethodsFirst, single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were filtered from summary-level genome-wide association studies using quality control measures. Subsequently, we employed two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to indirectly analyze the causal effect of MDs on the risk of OP through bone mineral density (in total body, femoral neck, lumbar spine, forearm, and heel) and fractures (in leg, arm, heel, spine, and osteoporotic fractures). Lastly, the causal effect of the MDs on the risk of OP was evaluated directly through OP. MR analysis was performed using several methods, including inverse variance weighting (IVW)-random effects, IVW-fixed effects, maximum likelihood, weighted median, MR-Egger regression, and penalized weighted median.ResultsThe results did not show any evidence of a causal relationship between MDs and the risk of OP (with almost all P values > 0.05). The robustness of the above results was proved to be good.DiscussionIn conclusion, this study did not find evidence supporting the claim that MDs have a definitive impact on the risk of OP, which contradicts many existing observational reports. Further studies are needed to determine the potential mechanisms of the associations observed in observational studies.

Efficient acetaminophen (APAP) degradation in the natural pyrite/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system under acidic conditions was observed. Approximately 88.8% of APAP degradation was attributed to sulfate radical and the remaining 11.2% of APAP degradation was attributed to singlet oxygen. Sequential experiments and XPS analysis showed that the rapid Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle was attributed to the sulfur species at the surface of pyrite. Pyrite showed an excellent stability and reusability, which was successfully applied to long-term APAP removal. This study provides a new understanding of the mechanism in pyrite/PMS system and suggests a simply operative and cost-effective method to treat organic contaminants.

Intravenously administered nanocarriers suffer from off-target distribution, pre-targeting drug leakage, and rapid clearance, limiting their efficiency in tumor eradication. To bypass these challenges, an injectable hydrogel with time- and temperature-dependent viscosity enhancement behavior and self-healing property are reported to assist in the retention of the hydrogel in the tumor site after injection. The cancer cell membrane (CCM) and sorafenib are embedded into the hydrogel to elicit local tumor-specific immune responses and induce cancer cell apoptosis, respectively. In addition, hyaluronic acid (HA) coated Bi2S3 nanorods (BiH) are incorporated within the hydrogel to afford prolonged multi-cycle local photothermal therapy (PTT) due to the reduced diffusion of the nanorods to the surrounding tissues as a result of HA affinity toward cancer cells. The results show the promotion of immunostimulatory responses by both CCM and PTT through the release of inflammatory cytokines from immune cells, which allows localized and complete ablation of the breast tumor in an animal model by a single injection of the hydrogel. Moreover, the BiH renders strong antibacterial activity to the hydrogel, which is crucial for the clinical translation of injectable hydrogels as it minimizes the risk of infection in the post-cancer lesion formed by PTT-mediated cancer therapy.

In domain machine translation,whether domain terms can be translated correctly plays a decisive role in translation quality.It is of practical significance to effectively integrate domain terms into neural machine translation model and improve the translation quality of domain terms.This paper proposes a method to integrate the term information in the field of new energy into neural machine translation as a priori knowledge.Taking the term dictionary constructed by the bilingual term knowledge base in the field of new energy as the medium,this paper puts forward and compares two different ways of knowledge integration:1)term replacement,that is,replacing the source term with the target term at the source language end;2)term addition refers to the splicing of source side terms and target side terms at the source language side,the identifier as special external knowledge is used to identify the beginning and end of the target term at both the source language end and the target language end.Experiments are carried out based on the Chinese and English bilingual alignment corpus in the field of new energy and the constructed Chinese and English alignment corpus.The results show that on the test set,the Bleu value of the proposed method is 6.38 and 6.55 higher than that of the baseline experiment respectively,which proves that the proposed method can effectively integrate the domain term knowledge into the translation model and improve the translation quality of domain terms.

Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of pegylated recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (PEG-rhG-CSF) for preventive or delayed treatment in neutropenia, completion rate of concurrent chemoradiotherapy and hospitalization rate in patients with esophageal squamous carcinoma during definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Methods: A total of 70 patients with esophageal squamous carcinoma in Peking University Cancer Hospital from January 2019 to December 2020, who received PEG-rhG-CSF during concurrent chemoradiotherapy, were enrolled in this retrospective analysis. There were 32 patients in the preventive group, and 38 patients in the delayed group. The incidence of neutropenia, completion rate of concurrent chemoradiotherapy and neutropenia-related hospitalization rate were compared between PEG-rhG-CSF preventive group and delayed group. Results: The incidence of severe neutropenia (Grades 3–4) in all patients was 31.4%. Comparison between preventive group and delayed group showed that the incidence of severe neutropenia was 6.3% and 39.4% (χ2 ​= ​10.428, P ​= ​0.001), respectively. In preventive group, the incidence of severe neutropenia was 3.7% and 20.0%, respectively, for primary prevention and secondary prevention of PEG-rhG-CSF (χ2 ​= ​12.321, P ​= ​0.001). The completion rate of concurrent chemoradiotherapy was 93.8% in the preventive group and 63.2% in the delayed group (χ2 ​= ​9.220, P ​= ​0.002). The incidence of treatment interruption was 25.7% in the whole group, 12.5% in the preventive group and 36.8% in the delayed group (χ2 ​= ​5.389, P ​= ​0.020). Seven patients (7/70, 10.0%) were hospitalized and treated with intravenous antibiotics for neutropenia, including 1 in the preventive group and 6 in the delayed group (P ​= ​0.078). Conclusions: Prophylactic use of PEG-rhG-CSF during concurrent chemoradiotherapy for patients with esophageal squamous carcinoma can effectively reduce the incidence of neutropenia, ensure the safety of treatment, and improve the completion rate of concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

Abstract Background Relapsing polychondritis (RP) patients with tracheal cartilage involvement are different from other patients. The objective of this study was to compare the clinical features and disease patterns between a respiratory involvement subgroup and a non-respiratory involvement subgroup according to chest computed tomography. Method We performed a retrospective cohort study collecting RP patients hospitalized at the Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital between January 2012 and August 2021. Results Respiratory involvement affected 59.7% of patients in our cohort. The incidence of costochondritis was more common in RP patients with respiratory involvement (p = 0.03); the incidence of inflammatory eye disease (p = 0.001) and auricular chondritis (p = 0.001) was less frequent in RP respiratory involvement patients.. Compared with the non-respiratory involvement subgroup the incidence of pulmonary infection marginally increased in the respiratory involvement subgroup (p = 0.06). Inflammatory indexes except for C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) were significantly higher in the respiratory involvement subgroup; analysis revealed no significant relationship between inflammatory indexes and pulmonary infection. Conclusion RP patients with respiratory involvement had a greater incidence of costochondritis and pulmonary infectionand lesser incidence of inflammatory eye diseases and auricular chondritis compared to non-respiratory involvement. Increasing inflammatory indexes suggests that patients with respiratory involvement had a higher disease activity index of RP. The difference in probability of survival was insignificant between subgroups.

Abstract As the first rate-limiting enzyme in fatty acid oxidation (FAO), CPT1 plays a significant role in metabolic adaptation in cancer pathogenesis. FAO provides an alternative energy supply for cancer cells and is required for cancer cell survival. Given the high proliferation rate of cancer cells, nucleotide synthesis gains prominence in rapidly proliferating cells. In the present study, we found that CPT1A is a determining factor for the abnormal activation of FAO in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells. CPT1A is highly expressed in NPC cells and biopsies. CPT1A dramatically affects the malignant phenotypes in NPC, including proliferation, anchorage-independent growth, and tumor formation ability in nude mice. Moreover, an increased level of CPT1A promotes core metabolic pathways to generate ATP, inducing equivalents and the main precursors for nucleotide biosynthesis. Knockdown of CPT1A markedly lowers the fraction of 13C-palmitate-derived carbons into pyrimidine. Periodic activation of CPT1A increases the content of nucleoside metabolic intermediates promoting cell cycle progression in NPC cells. Targeting CPT1A-mediated FAO hinders the cell cycle G1/S transition. Our work verified that CPT1A links FAO to cell cycle progression in NPC cellular proliferation, which supplements additional experimental evidence for developing a therapeutic mechanism based on manipulating lipid metabolism.

Doubled haploid (DH) technology is important in modern maize breeding. Haploid inducers determine the efficiency of both haploid induction and identification. It has taken decades to improve the efficiency, haploid induction rate (HIR), from the ∼2% of the ancestor haploid inducer, stock6, to the ∼10% of modern haploid inducers. Improvement of kernel oil content (KOC) would further enhance haploid identification efficiency. Using molecular marker-assisted selection, in combine with the number of haploids per ear as phenotypic criterion, we developed a new high-oil haploid inducer line, CHOI4, with a mean HIR of 15.8% and mean KOC of 11%. High KOC of CHOI4 can achieve a mean accuracy greater than 90% in identification of haploids of different backgrounds, with reduced false discovery rates and false negative rates in comparison with the previous high-oil haploid inducer line, CHOI3. Comparison of phenotypic selection strategies suggested that the number of haploids per ear can be used as a phenotyping criterion during haploid inducer line development. CHOI4 could further increase the efficiency of large-scale DH breeding programs with lower cost.

Plasticity and fracture problems have always been hot topics in numerical methods. In this work, a universal implementation procedure for the elasto‐plastic constitutive model is developed in the four‐dimensional lattice spring model (4D‐LSM), in which the Jaumann stress rate is incorporated to exclude the influence of the rigid rotation in the particle stress, expanding the ability of 4D‐LSM to deal with large elastic deformation problems by its own to large plastic deformation problems. As an example, the Zienkiewicz–Pande (ZP) constitutive model is implemented. Several numerical examples are carried out to check the performance of the implemented model. Through a comparison with analytical solutions, available experimental data, and other numerical results, the stability of the developed plastic framework and the correctness of the stress calculation scheme are verified. Meanwhile, numerical results show that the developed code is capable of solving elasto‐plastic large deformation problems. With the advantage of 4D‐LSM in handling fracture problems, the ability of the embedded model to solve plastic fracture problems is verified with a simple maximum deformation failure criterion. Objectives: To summarize the clinical characteristics and investigate the efficacy of ethanol embolotherapy in the treatment of chest well arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Treatment-associated complications were also explored. Materials and Methods: Between March 2017 and August 2021, 32 consecutive patients (mean age, 23.7 years; age range, 5–54 years) who underwent ethanol embolotherapy for chest well AVMs under general anesthesia were included in this study. Embolization was performed through a direct puncture, transarterial catheterization, or a combination of the 2 procedures. The mean follow-up duration after the last treatment was 18.0 months (range, 3–42 months). The degree of devascularization on follow-up (assessed using angiography or computed tomography), and the clinical signs and symptoms of AVMs were evaluated as the therapeutic outcomes. The major and minor complications associated with the procedures were recorded. Results: A total of 103 embolization procedures (mean, 3.2; range, 2–7) comprising 101 ethanol embolization and 2 coil embolizations were performed on 32 patients with chest wall AVMs. The AVM nidus was accessed through the transarterial approach alone in 4 patients, by direct puncture in 11, and a combined procedure in 17 patients. Overall, more than 80% of the procedures were performed using the combined approach. Complete AVM devascularization was achieved in 12 (37.5%) patients. Moreover, 76% to 99% AVM was achieved in 18 patients (56.3%), and 50% to 75% in 2 patients (6.3%). Bleeding, pain, heart failure, and cosmetic deformities were the indications for treatment. For 3 patients (3/32, 9.4%) who had bleeding, the treatment stopped the hemorrhage. Complete pain relief was reported in 8 patients (8/32, 25.0%), whereas complete relief from congestive heart failure post-embolization was observed in 5 of the 6 patients with congestive heart failure (5/6, 83.3%). Complete correction of cosmesis deformities after embolization was achieved in 10 patients (10/32, 31.3%). Two patients who underwent surgery to correct persistent deformity after embolization only showed insignificant improvement. In addition, 6 (18.8%) patients developed 13 complications including blister, necrosis, hemothorax, transient hemoglobinuria, and transient pulmonary artery hypertension. Conclusions: Ethanol embolotherapy is a safe and effective procedure for chest well AVMs. Surgery is required for some patients with residual cosmesis deformity. Clinical Impact: Currently, there is no standard treatment for chest well AVMs due to their rarity and high heterogeneity. The present study shows that thanol embolotherapy is a safe and clinically effective treatment procedure for the chest well AVMs. Transarterial embolization in combination with direct puncture embolization can reach the AVM nidus. Ethanol embolotherapy can achieve complete obliteration of the AVM nidus in the majority of patients. Surgery may still be needed to correct cosmetic deformity after embolization. Early social–behavioral intervention that emphasizes social skill training is critical to addressing emotional and behavioral problems in early childhood. In this meta-analysis review, we examined all the social skills intervention studies for preschoolers with, or at risk of, emotional and behavioral problems using group designs. This review included 25 studies that met the inclusion criteria. The robust variance estimation method was used to calculate the overall effect size of all the included studies, as this method can count for the pre-existing difference between the experiment and control groups. The included studies yielded an overall effect of 0.54 from the 151 effect sizes that were obtained for the 3484 preschool participants. Curriculum, integration, and treatment fidelity were identified as significant moderators of effects.

Indiscriminate drug administration may lead to drug therapy results with varying effects on patients, and the proposal of personalized medication can help patients to receive effective drug therapy. Conventional ways of personalized medication, such as pharmacogenomics and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), can only be implemented from a single perspective. The development of pharmacometabolomics provides a research method for the realization of precise drug administration, which integrates the environmental and genetic factors, and applies metabolomics technology to study how to predict different drug therapeutic responses of organisms based on baseline metabolic levels. The published research on pharmacometabolomics has achieved satisfactory results in predicting the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and the discovery of biomarkers of drugs. Among them, the pharmacokinetics related to pharmacometabolomics are used to explore individual variability in drug metabolism from the level of metabolism of the drugs in vivo and the level of endogenous metabolite changes. By searching for relevant literature with the keyword “pharmacometabolomics” on the two major literature retrieval websites, PubMed and Web of Science, from 2006 to 2023, we reviewed articles in the field of pharmacometabolomics that incorporated pharmacokinetics into their research. This review explains the therapeutic effects of drugs on the body from the perspective of endogenous metabolites and pharmacokinetic principles, and reports the latest advances in pharmacometabolomics related to pharmacokinetics to provide research ideas and methods for advancing the implementation of personalized medication.

Fungal endophytes are harboured in the leaves of every individual plant host and contribute to plant health, leaf senescence, and early decomposition. In grasslands, fungal endophytes and their hosts often coexist with large herbivores. However, the influence of grazing by large herbivores on foliar fungal endophyte communities remains largely unexplored. We conducted a long-term (18 yr) grazing experiment to explore the effects of grazing on the community composition and diversity of the foliar fungal endophytes of two perennial grassland species (i.e., Artemisia capillaris and Stipa bungeana) across one growing season. Grazing significantly increased the mean fungal alpha diversity of A. capillaris in the early season. In contrast, grazing significantly reduced the mean fungal alpha diversity of endophytic fungi of S. bungeana in the late season. Grazing, growing season, and their interactions concurrently structured the community composition of the foliar fungal endophytes of both plant species. However, growing season consistently outperformed grazing and environmental factors in shaping the community composition and diversity of both plant species. Overall, our findings demonstrate that the foliar endophytic fungal community diversity and composition differed in response to grazing between A. capillaris and S. bungeana during one growing season. The focus on this difference will enhance our understanding of grazing’s impact on ecological systems and improve land management practices in grazing regions. This variation in the effects of leaf nutrients and plant community characteristics on foliar endophytic fungal community diversity and composition may have a pronounced impact on plant health and plant–fungal interactions.
