Purpose: This study sought to investigate the efficacy of Tabata-style high-intensity interval training (T-HIIT) on athletic performance in judoka and to determine the impact of the fecal organic acid profile before training on the improvement of athletic performance. Methods: Twenty males from Aichi University Judo Club (10 high-level competitors and 10 others) were included. Physical fitness tests such as the Uchikomi shuttle run, countermovement jump, squat jump, and chin-ups using a judo uniform were performed before and after T-HIIT. Fecal samples were collected before T-HIIT to measure the fecal concentration of organic acids. The fecal characteristics were categorized using the Bristol Stool Scale. Results: The mean number of repetitions of the Uchikomi shuttle run test significantly increased for all judoka following T-HIIT. However, improvements in other physical fitness tests varied, with some judoka showing improvements while others did not. The changes in countermovement jump (r = −.48, P =.029) and chin-ups using a judo uniform (r = −.45, P =.045) after T-HIIT were significantly negatively correlated with the fecal concentrations of succinic acid before T-HIIT. There was a significant correlation between the Bristol Stool Scale score and fecal concentrations of succinic acid (r =.45, P =.044). Compared with other compounds, the fecal concentrations of acetic acid and propionic acid were significantly greater in high-level competitors, while succinic acid concentrations tended to be lower. Conclusions: T-HIIT effectively improved the specialized endurance of the judoka. Modifying the fecal organic acid profile, especially the fecal succinic acid concentration, may enhance the efficacy of athletic performance improvements achieved by T-HITT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Preliminary analyses of asteroid Ryugu samples show kinship to aqueously altered CI (Ivuna-type) chondrites, suggesting similar origins. We report identification of C-rich, particularly primitive clasts in Ryugu samples that contain preserved presolar silicate grains and exceptional abundances of presolar SiC and isotopically anomalous organic matter. The high presolar silicate abundance (104 ppm) indicates that the clast escaped extensive alteration. The 5 to 10 times higher abundances of presolar SiC (~235 ppm), N-rich organic matter, organics with N isotopic anomalies (1.2%), and organics with C isotopic anomalies (0.2%) in the primitive clasts compared to bulk Ryugu suggest that the clasts formed in a unique part of the protoplanetary disk enriched in presolar materials. These clasts likely represent previously unsampled outer solar system material that accreted onto Ryugu after aqueous alteration ceased, consistent with Ryugus rubble pile origin.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the examination and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) and on the behaviors of patients and practitioners. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of the CRC patients who presented to our department between April 2019 and March 2021 and underwent surgery. Clinical presentation of CRC and time from symptom onset to medical presentation were compared between the control (April 2019 to March 2020, n=124) and COVID-19 pandemic periods (April 2020 to March 2021, n=111). Results: Two hundred and thirty-five patients were reviewed. The rate of positive fecal occult blood tests was significantly lower during the COVID-19 pandemic period (13.5 vs. 25.0%, P = 0.027). Among the symptomatic patients who had melena and abdominal symptoms, the time from symptom onset to medical presentation was significantly longer during the COVID-19 period (115 vs. 31 days, P < 0.001). In addition, the interval between presenting to a practitioner and being referred to our department was similar between the two periods (19 vs. 13 days, P = 0.092). There were no significant differences in the stage of cancer between the two periods. The rate of preoperative sub-obstruction was significantly higher during the COVID-19 period (41.4 vs 23.4%, P = 0.003). There was no significant difference in overall survival and recurrence-free survival between two periods. Conclusions: Hesitation to seek examination and treatment for CRC was observed in patients but not in practitioners during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The prognosis did not change.

The vitrectomy was performed for a retinal detachment and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).Design: Retrospective case series.Methods: ERGs were recorded with the RETevalTM system (LKC Technologies Inc. Gaithersburg, MD; Welch Allyn, Inc. Skaneateles Falls, NY) from eight eyes with PDR before and after the SO removal. The amplitudes and implicit times of the a- and b-waves of the ERGs before the SO removal were compared to that after the SO removal.Results: ERGs were recordable in four eyes before and after the SO removal and the a- and b-amplitudes improved in three eyes and worsened in one eye after the SO removal. In the remaining four eyes, ERGs were non-recordable both before and after the SO removal.Conclusion: These results indicate that ERGs picked up by skin electrodes can be used to assess the physiology of the retina in eyes with a SO tamponade. The flat ERGs in the SO-filled eye indicated the presence of diffuse retinal damage which was confirmed by the flat ERGs after the SO removal.Plain Language Summary: There has been an increasing number of reports on evaluating the retinal function using electroretinography (ERG) with skin electrodes. The main advantage of this system is the ability to record ERGs with a skin electrode that does not touch the cornea and ocular surface. This reduces the risk of infection especially in the postoperative period and in clinical situations where infection is suspected. In addition, there have been only a few reports evaluating the function of the retina by ERG in SO-filled eyes.We recorded ERGs with the RETeval (LKC Technologies Inc. Gaithersburg, MD; Welch Allyn Inc. Skaneateles Falls, NY) device, a relatively new ERG recording system that uses skin electrodes and is less invasive. We recorded ERGs from eight SO-filled eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). In 4 SO filled eyes, the amplitudes increased in three eyes after the SO removal. In the other four eyes, ERGs were non-recordable before and after the SO removal. These results suggest that the RETeval system that uses skin electrodes can be used to assess the retinal function in PDR eyes with a SO tamponade. We suggest that the absence of ERGs in the SO filled eyes was not due to the electrical non-conductive effects of SO but may indicate the presence of diffuse retinal damage which was confirmed after the SO removal.Keywords: electroretinogram, pars plana vitrectomy, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, silicone oil, skin electrode

B cells that produce anti–aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies play a crucial role in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) pathogenesis. We previously reported that naïve B (NB) cells from patients with NMOSD, unlike those from healthy controls, exhibit transcriptional changes suggesting the adoption of an antibody-secreting cell (ASCs) phenotype. CD25+ NB cells, whose numbers are increased in NMOSD patients, have a greater capacity to differentiate into ASCs than do CD25- NB cells. Here, we attempted to establish novel B cell subset cell lines from patients with NMOSD to enable molecular analysis of their abnormalities. We generated Epstein-Barr virus–immortalized lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) from CD25+ NB, CD25- NB, and switched memory B (SMB) cells. All LCLs largely maintained the features of the original cell type in terms of cell surface marker expression and could differentiate into ASCs. Notably, CD25+ NB–LCLs derived from patients with NMOSD exhibited a greater capacity to differentiate into SMB-LCLs than did CD25- NB–LCLs derived from patients with NMOSD, suggesting that the established LCLs maintained the characteristics of cells isolated from patients. The LCLs established in this study are likely to be useful for elucidating the mechanism by which cells that produce anti-AQP4 antibodies develop in NMOSD.

The artery of Davidoff and Schechter (ADS) is mostly identified in pathological conditions such as dural arteriovenous fistulas and brain tumors. Herein, we report a rare case of a ruptured aneurysm of the ADS, which was one of the feeders of a falcotentorial dural arteriovenous fistula. We performed endovascular embolization of the aneurysm and parent artery using n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate. Complete occlusion of the fistula was achieved by another feeder after the acute phase. To our best knowledge, only a few reports on embolization of ruptured ADS aneurysms exist. Furthermore, this is the first report on the embolization of a ruptured ADS aneurysm using n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate. This case highlights that endovascular n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate embolization could be a useful treatment for a ruptured ADS aneurysm.

Faunal studies of oceanic islands provide unique opportunities to study ecology and evolution. Four Armadillidae taxa were recorded from the Izu Islands, a group of oceanic islands off the coast of Japan. The distributions of these taxa and a phylogenetic tree are based on molecular data for 249 specimens from 88 sites. The Spherillo russoi (Arcangeli, 1927) species complex is distributed widely throughout these islands, and dispersal may have occurred via oceanic currents. On the nearby Izuoshima and Toshima Islands, Spherillo dorsalis (Iwamoto, 1943) may have recently migrated from the Izu Peninsula either via currents or been transported by human activity. In the middle islands, Shikinejima, Kozushima, Miyakejima, and Mikurajima, Venezillo hasegawai (Nunomura, 1991) was found, which may be derived from Spherillo obscurus (Budde-Lund, 1885) distributed in the Kanto region on the mainland. On the most southern and distant Hachijojima Island, Spherillo punctatus Nunomura, 2007 was found, and it does not differ genetically from specimens from Izenajima and Tokunoshima Islands in the Nansei Island Group, despite an approximate 1,000-km distance between them; this species may have been transferred by human activity. Our study showed that the Armadillidae assemblages in the Izu Islands were formed by several migration routes.

The period before the public commenced using any personal protective equipment (PPE) was evaluating to describe the transmissibility of the SARS-CoV-2/WA-1/2020. We analyzed the secondary attack rate (SAR) among close contacts and the risk factor for SAR.Methods: This retrospective cohort study included a total of 539 patients who were anticipated for the SARS-CoV-2/WA-1/2020 infection at Toho University Medical Center Omori Hospital from February to May 2020. We selected 54 patients with 1) exclude other pathogens infection, 2) include “Three Cs” condition: crowded places between distance< 6 feet, closed spaces indoor and close contact settings involving contact > 15min with a person tested positive for SARS-CoV-2/WA-1/2020 without PPE. We evaluated alternative infection risks: the body mass index (BMI) and diabetes (DM) status (non-DM, pre-DM, and DM) as demographic determinants of transmissibility and infectivity of SARS-CoV2/WA-1/2020 cases during the incubation period.Results: The calculated SAR was 79.3%. BMI was significantly associated with the PCR positivity rate, which was significant in the univariate (CI 95%, 1.02– 1.51; P = 0.03) and multivariate (CI 95%, 1.02– 1.60; P = 0.03) analyses. Comparing the different BMI groups, the highest BMI group (25.5− 35.8 kg/m2) had an elevated risk of SAR compared to the lowest BMI group (14.0– 22.8 kg/m2), with an odds ratio of 1.41 (95% CI, 1.02– 1.59; P = 0.03). There were no significant differences in the risk of SAR among different DM statuses.Conclusion: The transmissibility of SARS-CoV2/WA-1/2020 was high (79.3%) among household members without PPE who had “Three Cs” exposure. Abstract Background Standard surgery for upper advanced gastric cancer without invasion of the greater curvature (UGC‐GC) is spleen‐preserving D2 total gastrectomy without dissection of the splenic‐hilar nodes (#10). However, some patients with nodal metastasis to #10 survive more than 5 years due to nodal dissection of #10. If nodal metastasis to #10 is predictable based on the positivity of other nodes dissected by the current standard surgery without #10 nodal dissection, physicians may be able to consider #10 dissection. Methods This study retrospectively reviewed data from the National Cancer Center Hospital in Japan between 2000 and 2012. We selected cases that met the following criteria: (1) D2 or more total gastrectomy with splenectomy, (2) UGC‐GC, and (3) histological type is gastric adenocarcinoma. We performed univariate and multivariate analyses concerning lymph node stations associated with #10 metastasis. Results A total of 366 patients were examined. A multivariate analysis revealed that #10 metastasis was associated with positivity of the nodes along the short gastric arteries (#4sa) and distal nodes along the splenic artery (#11d) (#4sa: p = 0.003, #11d: p = 0.016). When either key node was positive, the metastatic rate of #10 was 24.4%, and the therapeutic value index was 13.3. Conclusions #4sa and #11d were key lymph nodes predicting #10 nodal metastasis in UGC‐GC. When these key nodes are positive on computed tomography before surgery or according to a rapid pathological examination during surgery, dissection of #10 should be considered even if upper advanced tumors are not invading the greater curvature.

She was treated with mesalazine and azathioprine, and her disease activity was well controlled. At the age of 50 years, the patient was experiencing fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody stool, and anal pain, which led to a diagnosis of a relapse of UC. Although steroid therapy was administered and tended to improve her symptoms, fecaloid vaginal discharge occurred, and rectovaginal fistula (RVF) was confirmed. Colostomy was performed, and infliximab was initiated as maintenance therapy for UC. All symptoms improved, and RVF closure was confirmed 6 months after the initiation of infliximab. To date, she has been free from relapse of UC. There have been only a few reports of UC complicated by RVF, and this condition is often difficult to treat. To the best of our knowledge, no other case of UC complicated by RVF in which the fistula was closed after treatment with colostomy and infliximab has been previously reported; thus, our report of the present case is valuable to the literature.Keywords: ulcerative colitis, rectovaginal fistula, infliximab, colostomy

Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), self-assembled porous materials synthesized from metal ions and organic ligands, are promising candidates for the direct capture of CO2 from the atmosphere. In this work, we developed a regression model to predict the optimal component of the MOF that governs the amount of CO2 adsorption per volume based on experimentally observed adsorption and structure data combined with MOF adsorption sites. The structural descriptors were generated by topological data analysis with persistence diagrams, an advanced mathematical method for quantifying the rings and cavities within the MOF. This enables us to analyze direct effects and significance of the geometric structure of the MOF on the efficiency of CO2 adsorption in a novel way. The proposed approach is proved to be highly correlated with experimental data and thus offers an effective screening tool for MOFs with optimized structures.
