Energy is at the center of human society and drives the technologies and overall human well-being. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are widely used for system modeling, prediction, control, and optimization in the energy sector. The internet of things (IoT) is the core of the third wave of the information industry revolution and AI. In the energy sector, tens of billions of IoT appliances are linked to the Internet, and these appliances generate massive amounts of data every day. Extracting useful information from the massive amount of data will be a very meaningful thing. Complex event processing (CEP) is a stream-based technique that can extract beneficial information from real-time data through pre-establishing pattern rules. The formulation of pattern rules requires strong domain expertise. Therefore, at present, the pattern rules of CEP still need to be manually formulated by domain experts. However, in the face of complex, massive amounts of IoT data, manually setting rules will be a very difficult task. To address the issue, this paper proposes a CEP rule auto-extraction framework by combining deep learning methods with data mining algorithms. The framework can automatically extract pattern rules from unlabeled air pollution data. The deep learning model we presented is a two-layer LSTM (long short-term memory) with an attention mechanism. The framework has two phases: in the first phase, the anomalous data is filtered out and labeled from the IoT data through the deep learning model we proposed, and then the pattern rules are mined from the labeled data through the decision tree data mining algorithm in the second phase. We compare other deep learning models to evaluate the feasibility of the framework. In addition, in the rule extraction stage, we use a decision tree data mining algorithm, which can achieve high accuracy. Experiments have shown that the framework we proposed can effectively extract meaningful and accurate CEP rules. The research work in this paper will help support the advancement of the sector of air pollution prediction, assist in the establishment of air pollution regulatory strategies, and further contribute to the development of a green energy structure.

To transition to a sustainable society, every local government needs to properly recognize, measure, and publish the current situation in their administrative division. This study conducted eco-efficiency assessment of activities carried out at the local level around the world based on the economic value and environmental load indicators in one year (2015). The assessment’s target areas were the administrative divisions of 42 countries that were mainly OECD members. The economic value was the Gross Regional Product (GRP), and the environmental load was calculated based on LIME3, an endpoint-type and global-scale Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) method that can calculate the assessment results in monetary units (the “eco-index USD”). The indicator for eco-efficiency (dimensionless) was quantitatively defined by dividing the monetary units of the eco-index USD by the GRP in each area. The assessment results show that the average eco-efficiency value in all areas of the 42 countries was 30.2. Of these countries, the major cities (administrative division unit) with the top-three values include Paris (213.1), London (154.3), and Dublin (141.8). The results for each division were visualized on graphs and maps in order to understand their positions from environmental and economic perspectives. No such assessment has ever been conducted at the local level and under the same conditions globally. This study provides insights that contributes to the establishment of a standard methodology for local governments’ environmental accounting.

Rapid urbanization is responsible for local atmospheric pollution, which negatively affects the sustainability and human health. To offset the adverse effects, a new form of greening, termed as the green roof, is becoming one of the remedies. Previous studies and practice have validated the positive impacts of green roofs on atmospheric environment improvement, but the large-scale quantitative studies and the related urban planning still show that difficulties exist in obtaining the overall area and spatial morphological pattern of green roofs from the massive building stock. In this study, we presented a novel method based on deep learning to recognize the rooftops available and simulated the atmospheric pollutants removal potential (APRP) of green roofs in visualization. Compared with traditional methods, our method was more accurate and efficient. In this study, we recovered a trained neural network model and achieved a satisfactory 94.17% validation accuracy. According to our results, Shijiazhuang City offered great potential that if all the selected rooftops installed green roofs, 1.210465×106 kg/year pollutants would be cleaned up with dry deposition. Compact development is one of the most effective solutions for sustainable urbanization under the rapid growth of the urban population. Great efforts have been made to measure urban physical compactness while limited attention has been paid to functional zoning of urban areas. Here, we introduce a novel index, called the functional compactness index (FCI), to quantify urban functional compactness through the integration of geospatial data sources, including Points of Interest (POIs) data, Road Network of OpenStreetMap (RNO) data, and National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) nighttime light data. The FCI does not require the analysis of the grid scale and thus, is technically simpler than conventional compactness index (CI). We examined the effectiveness of FCI on estimating urban compactness under four land use scenarios and in four Chinese cities. The results suggest that: (1) the FCI can comprehensively reflect the intensity of human activity, the differentiation between residential zones and other functional zones, and the mixing degree of different functional zones; (2) the FCI is not affected by the service radius of residential zones; (3) the FCI can reflect the overall and local-scale functional compactness of a city; and (4) the FCI can be used to effectively compare spatial characteristics of functional compactness among different cities. In conclusion, the FCI considers the rationality of urban functional layout, which not only is helpful for urban planning, but also enriches the quantitative methods of urban compactness evaluation.

The following article addresses the issue of wind conditions around urban building development at pedestrian level. Factors that depend on those issues include wind comfort and air quality within urbanized spaces. The conditions specific of cities located in a temperate climate zone have been taken into account. The article is intended to identify aerodynamic phenomena characteristic of the three basic types of multi-family building development (section, linear, quarter). For each type of buildings, three different variants were considered on the basis of land use efficiency (low, medium, high) each type of buildings is characterised with. The models illustrate the patterns observed within European urban planning thought and have been developed in accordance with contemporary architectural and urban conditions, as well as with legal requirements and good practices in force in Poland. Experimental research in the wind tunnel has been conducted by means of two complementary field methods (visualization and erosion). The application of these two methods made it possible to obtain data on airflow direction layouts and on changes in airflow velocity. Subsequently, the results obtained in the study have been compared. Thus, more and less favourable geometrical layouts in respect to aerodynamic phenomena have been indicated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most major cities are struggling with the environmental, economic and social problems of overcrowding, especially in the world’s most densely populated city, Seoul. Urban sustainability is a global resource management issue, solving it at the level of urban governance is also a global responsibility, its concept of sustainable development has evolved through ecological thinking and still defines urban governance everywhere today. However, the ecological and energy management problems of cities can only be partially solved by regulators and infrastructure investments, it is at least as important to change the values of people and to promote the development of environmentally conscious behavior. To this end, the leadership of Seoul undertook the introduction of effective information technology tools. In this study, we approach the above issues through a central concept of sustainability and present alternative responses that are suitable for solving environmental problems at the societal level, with particular reference to the IT toolkit. The growing media in the planting layer of sponge city facilities has an important influence on stormwater runoff control, pollutant removal and plant growth. This study consists of field tests that include the continuous monitoring to evaluate the performance of runoff control and pollutant removal of the innovative granular sponge city growing media during wet season. The results show that the lowest average permeability of innovative granular sponge city growing mediais 500 mm • h -1, and the pollutant removal effect is good, the removal rate of solid suspended solids is more than 80%, and the main effluent quality indexes (total nitrogen, TN; total phosphorus, TP; ammonia, NH3-N; chemical oxygen demand, COD) sampled from the outflow of the testing bioretention cells show that the water quality of discharged runoff meets the Class-IH indices of the Environmental quality standards for surface water ( GB 3838-2002). Combination of local landscape plants such as evergreen shrubs, deciduous shrubs, perennial ground cover and other native plants in South China all grow well during the field tests. The overall life-cycle cost of this new type of growing media also needs to be further verified by different projects in different climate regions, generally it is 1/3-3/4 of that of traditional media. In summary, compared with the traditional sponge city media, the innovative granular sponge city growing media has better permeability and pollutantremoval effect, low cost, and convenient operationand maintenancein the later stage. The practice of sustainable buildings has become a general trend in urban development. Yet, with the rapid development of urban renewal, the performance of existing buildings often fails to meet the actual needs of sustainable urban development. To improve the performance of existing buildings, it is urgently needed to transform the existing structures and upgrade their functions and facilities. However, the pertinent guidelines have often been unclear for assessing the performance of existing structures, and a sounder and quantitative sustainable performance assessment approach has been lacking to guide decisions on the restoration, protection, or demolition of existing buildings. Based on a multi-expert consultation methodology, we proposed a revised flexible comprehensive assessment system and a comprehensive sustainability assessment approach. The system includes 4 categories, 7 quantitative and 47 qualitative indicators. Specifically, the assessment system involves a series of steps: 1) building a hierarchical model, 2) defining assessment indicators/items and constructing a judgment matrix, 3) determining the weight coefficients of the indicators, 4) collecting/calculating quantitative and qualitative data, 5) analyzing the data and results, and 6) drawing the assessment conclusions. A case study was presented to demonstrate the application of the approach. Significant efforts are being performed to make cities smarter and more sustainable. Therefore, there is a need to compare these efforts using evaluation frameworks. According to the literature review, the basic dimensions of smart cities are generally evaluated with the criteria of regional competitiveness, transportation, information and communication technology, economy, natural resources, human and social capital, quality of life and participation of citizens in the management of cities. In this paper, Analytical Network Process (ANP) is used to weight smart and sustainable city criteria. According to the results, while 'smart living' is the most important characteristic with a 35,459% priority, 'smart governance' is the last with 5,738%. The study covers 44 cities around the world and comparisons were made by TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution). According to the results, Tokyo, London and New York are in the top three in the overall ranking. But none of these cities is among the top five in terms of smart governance, mobility and environmental dimensions. According to the results obtained, the article provides some recommendations for the cities. These results aim to help cities understand their situation relative to other cities and to see areas where policymakers need to strengthen.

Smart cities have emerged as a possible solution to sustainability problems deriving from rapid urbanization. They are considered imperative for a sustainable future. Despite their recent popularity, the literature reveals the lack of conceptual clarity around the term of smart city, due to the plethora of existing definitions. This comprehensive literature review has identified 43 smart city definitions assessed according to the dimensions of sustainability that they consider, environmental, economic or social, and the priority in which they accord the concept of sustainability. The study revealed the common and opposite characteristics of the definitions according to the sustainability dimensions they consider and discussed the limitations they present. Such limitations appear to be related to citizen accessibility, misrepresentation and the particularity of existing urban fabrics. Taking into account these issues, as well as the difference between the smart city vision and its actual implementation, a new updated definition is proposed. The findings of the present study contribute to knowledge and practice by aiding conceptual clarity and, in particular, by drawing attention to underlying assumptions about the role of sustainability in smart city development.

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are regarded as the key policy agenda for national, regional, and local government to combat climate change impacts and promote sustainable development. For example, in Perth and Peel metropolitan area, the capital city of Western Australia, there has been a shift of policy setting from that of a sprawling city to a denser city, while maintaining and promoting its ecosystem services and achieving sustainable city goals. Residential verge gardens have been widely adopted in recent years by communities and local governments in the Perth metropolitan area. This study reviews the motivations and drivers for the uptake of verge gardens in metropolitan suburbs and identifies potential policy responses. The City of Bayswater local government area was surveyed for this research. The study considers a mixed-methods approach, including site auditing and a questionnaire survey for local residents who have transformed their verges. A total of 534 verge gardens were audited on residential lots, and 166 valid questionnaire responses were received from residents. The site-audit of the verge gardens in Bayswater found that native vegetation is the dominant verge garden of choice, followed by the ornamental garden, with food production (plants/vegetables) seeming to be the least popular option. Regarding the motivations and drivers, the study has found that social (e.g., aesthetics, flowers, social interactions, and social mimicry), environmental (e.g., attracting wildlife and birds and environmental practice waterwise garden), and personal (easy maintenance) drivers are the primary motivators for residents to adopt verge gardens. Whilst the on-ground surveys were prior to COVID-19, the article includes how this topic could relate to pandemic-resilient urban spaces. As local governments look towards supporting the sustainable outcome goals, the observations of this study will be helpful for developing local government policy and community programs in the promotion and uptake of verge gardens in Australian cities.

Considering that more than half of the world’s population today lives in cities and consumes about 80% of the world’s energy and that there is a problem with drinking water supply, this paper presents a way to solve the problem of the sustainability of cities by enabling their complete independence from external sources of energy and drinking water. The proposed solution entails the use of Seawater Steam Engine (SSE) technology to supply cities with electricity, thermal energy and drinking water. The system would involve the seasonal storage of electricity and thermal energy, supported by geothermal heat pumps. The strategy of the distribution network would be based on the original concept of the “loop”. In cities that do not have enough space, SSE collectors would be placed above the lower parts of the city like “canopies”. The city of Zagreb (Croatia) was selected as a case study due to its size, climate and vulnerability to natural disasters. The results show that Zagreb could become sustainable in 30 years with the allocation of less than 2% of GDP and could become a paradigm of sustainability for cities worldwide. This paper encourages the development of the “Philosophy of Sustainability” because the stated goals cannot be achieved without a change in consciousness.

Every year many people migrate from country to city to live there. This will load a big pressure on the whole living in the city, Baghdad city also suffer from this problem in addition to other found problems like energy consumption , waste accumulate , Traffic congestion, noise, environmental pollution. To offer a good sustainable future living to population without any damage to environment and to solve many problems , one can use internet of things which is the connection network of the things especially with high spread of networks now which Internet of things based on it .the purpose of this research is to explain internet of things (IoT) and its role in solving many problems in the city , by using of the data collect by internet of things and to respond in real time to know problems and to enable planning and building city in a valuable sustainable way . As well as to explain the concept and models of smart city and its relationship to the sustainable city and Internets of things. In addition, to demonstrate in a simplified way the possibility of using the Internet of things to solve the problems in the Baghdad city and to raise the standard of life of its inhabitant is in a sustainable smart way. Considering the goals and dimensions of development and the characteristics of different communities, sustainability should be pursued such as community-based development based on the strategic principles of the urban environment influenced by tourism with respect to the citizen’s participation. Therefore, to meet these growing needs, the necessity of appropriate spaces and places in the urban environment for tourism is well identified and planned, and then the urban environment is screened through the necessary strategies, integrated local-level monitoring and management for the metropolis of Tehran. The purpose of this research is to analyze the status of quo and desirable development in the future of Tehran metropolitan in the field of altered environment through tourism activities. The methodology was developed within the framework of sustainable urban development influenced by tourism paradigms and by urban tourism perspectives. For this purpose, the data collection was conducted using the library, survey, and interviews with experts and authorities in the study area. The results showed that some indicators such as enjoyment of natural areas (83.13%), recreation and leisure activities (79.36%), observation of nature's exciting landscapes (72.71%), escape from daily stress (72.18%), gathering together, visiting and traveling with friends and relatives (67.72%), visiting natural areas and intact (67.62%), and urban stress relief (60%) had the most motivations for tourists to Tehran urban environment sustainability. Also, the results indicate that the amount of tourists Visit from the natural areas is equal to 56.96%, protection of plant species, 54.38%, protection of animal species and in the bird’s parameter is 86 / 42%.

In the best practices, planning of urban green spaces is managed in such a way that it follows the key principles such as meeting per capita standards and providing accessible and balanced distribution of these spaces all across the city. In the context of emerging economy, these principles are unfortunately not followed strictly all times. In this study, it is attempted to investigate Tabriz city of Iran is in terms of ecological planning to quantitatively analyse its green space characteristics. The used methodology includes determining the relevant urban green space development indicators (e.g. accessibility, per capita supply, balanced distribution, and continuous development of urban green spaces) from the literature and using the secondary data collected from variety of sources to analyse the study area. The study seeks to provide a comprehensive view on status of green spaces in Tabriz in the light of ecological principles and indicators and GIS-based spatial analysis. Results indicate that: a) Green space per capita provision in Tabriz is much lower than the national and international standards (some districts offer only 0-1 sq.m. per capita green space); b) Districts of Tabriz do not have a balanced distribution of green spaces and access to green spaces on foot (only 18% of the population can access green spaces within a 5 minute walk); c) Except for the provided street side green spaces, all other passive or active types of green spaces in Tabriz are not continuously linked (no continuity to form a green corridor or linear greenways). This study also comes up with some recommendations for Tabriz and other cities with similar characteristics.

Sustainable development is the foundation of economic and social policies for all countries in world. In 2018, 55.3% of the world population lives in cities and this ratio is expected to exceed 75% in 2030. In this context, the growth of cities should be controlled and directed. The cities, without a forward looking city policy, are in desperate straits towards to disasters. The city should be harmonized with the nature meanwhile enhancing the city life quality. Sustainable cities ensure harmony between the men and the nature and prepare the city to disasters while smart cities help to recover cities by means of information communication technologies. Thus, the cities would not be vulnerable against the disasters. In Turkey, instead following a national or sectorial disaster struggle polices, cities emerge as a niche. 1999 Marmara earthquake, the highest loss from a disaster in the history of Turkey, analyzed according to these concepts. The government should transform from fatalistic, curative, reactive to self-confident, protective and pro-active in the framework of sustainable and smart cities in Turkey. In last few years, research on renewables were shifted from integrating renewable energy (RE) with buildings into integrating renewable energy (RE) within urban environment due to the large occupies of urban areas in comparing to the building foot print. Urban areas such as urban landscape areas have a great potential in generating huge amount of energy that could satisfy the needs of urban neighborhoods. The presented research identify the properties of a new elements called Energy-scape elements (ESE) that integrates RE devices with urban landscape elements. This research focuses on analyzing the efficiency of web-based application called "Energy-scape software" (ESS) and compare its efficiency with Energy-scape database (ESD) through a qualitative method. The research concludes that Energy-scape software (ESS) application is an effective tool for implementing Energy-scape elements (ESE) and it overcome the basic knowledge of architects and landscape designers toward renewable properties. Moreover, it identifies the optimum type and location of Energy- scape elements (ESE) within a specific project, and it calculates the impact of using Energy-scape elements (ESE) in term of energy-savings. International efforts to preserve the natural environment are mainly concerned with large, bio-diverse and relatively untouched ecosystems or with an individual animal or vegetal species, either endangered or threatened with extinction. The rapid pace of expansion and development in urban areas will undoubtedly affect many aspects of sustainable development. Unsustainable consumption of natural resources, water, land and recreational facilities will have detrimental effects on the environment as well as on both economic and social health livelihood. Much less attention is being paid to natures that are close to where people live and work, to small-scale green areas in cities and its benefits to people. Increasing empirical evidence, however, indicates that the presence of natural areas contributes to the quality of life in many ways. Besides many environmental and ecological services, urban nature provides important social and psychological benefits to human societies, which enrich human life with meanings and emotions. Thus, this paper elaborates on the general perspectives of the current status of urban forests and green areas in Taman Tasik Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. The issues investigated concerns people's motives for urban nature, the emotional dimension involved in their experience of nature and its importance of its people's general well-being. The results attest of that experience of nature in urban environment is a source of positive feelings and beneficial services, which fulfils important immaterial and non-consumptive human needs. The aim of the study is to assess the renewability of the urban texture in Çanakkale, to recycling and renewable energy resources within the scope of sustainability of physical, ecologic, and social life cycles. Urban development is revealed in concepts like ecologic, smart, sustainable, and green town for town concepts. Within the framework of sustainable town approaches, this study assesses Çanakkale at the point of green space planning; urban solid, gas, and liquid waste management and planning; and recycling of agricultural waste by researching cyclical operations and processes and literature studies. Additionally, SWOT analysis is performed on the rapidly changing and developing sustainable structure in Çanakkale with attempts made to develop recommendations about the status in the near future. The study is important as no similar study has been performed in Çanakkale and in terms of partly illuminating the potential of the town as a sustainable town. The green space per person of 3.05 m2 is well below the standards and is indicated as one of the leading results within the scope of the study. This situation makes it mandatory to increase planning for esthetic and functional green space within the town in general. Additionally, the water sample after treatment in the wastewater treatment plant had total suspended solid matter of 29 mg/L and was identified at ideal levels. Chemical and biochemical oxygen demands provided similar results. As a result, it was revealed that river water does not represent a risk in terms of human health. Within the scope of notable points, with multiple management and planning strategies, rational steps should be taken about renewability and recycling of solid, liquid, and gas wastes. Rational use of all natural and cultural resources by administrators and local government with cooperation of non-governmental organizations will improve the current conditions in Çanakkale and make considerable strides to becoming a sustainable city. Public transportation in Indonesia experiences a number of challenges, for example, low density of road network, increased number of vehicles annually, paratransit domination in the city, limited number of MRT available, poor traffic regulation adherence, and poor land-use arrangement. Based on the conditions, sustainable transportation as a part of a sustainable city cannot be reached soon. The study aims are to determine priority action programs of sustainable public transportation in developing a sustainable city in Indonesia. A number of case studies regarding many public transportation modes i.e. Padalarang-Bandung- Cicalengka electric train, bus public transportation in Yogyakarta, Pekanbaru, and Bandung, and ITS implementation in Bandung. More than 800 respondents involved in these case studies. A number of methods including UCL Method, Important Performance Analysis, Quadrant Analysis, hetero-hedastisity, multi-colinearity, validity, normality, reliability, and multiple regression used in analyzing a large number of field data. Results studies are priority action programs of sustainable public transportation in developing sustainable city in Indonesia i.e. developing: safe, secure, comfortable, and cheap public transportation, car free-day, car-pooling, cycling, walking, ride-sharing, integrated public transportation modes, good land use management, and good maintenance and improvement of ATCS as a part of ITS. This study examines the efficacy of adopting the sustainable city framework as an urban planning agenda with a view to addressing the dilemma of informal settlements in Harare, Zimbabwe. Data were collected through document review which was triangulated with key informant interviews. Thematic and content analysis was then used to analyse the data. The results of the study show that informal settlements in Harare are a result of a multiplicity of factors which include political economy, uncoordinated planning, invasion of land by land barons and inappropriate planning ideologies. The planning approaches to address informal settlements also tends to be too harsh at times when evictions are used though there are some instances where it is commendable-regularisation by UDC. The study recommends the adoption of planning approaches that conform to the local realities in Harare as well as considering the sustainable cities framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
