A novel actinomycete strain, SMC 256T, which developed small, globose sporangia at the ends of long sporangiophores on aerial mycelium, was isolated from soil collected in a mountain forest of Thailand. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SMC 256T belonged to the genus Kutzneria, and the closest phylogenetically related species were Kutzneria buriramensis BCC 29373T (98.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Kutzneria kofuensis ATCC 27102T (98.2 %), Kutzneria albida ATCC 25243T (97.9 %) and Kutzneria viridogrisea ATCC 25242T (97.4 %). The DNA-DNA relatedness values that distinguished strain SMC 256T from previously described members of the genus Kutzneria were significantly below 70 %. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71.8 mol%. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars consisted of rhamnose, ribose, mannose, glucose and galactose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). Mycolic acids were not detected. The diagnostic phospholipids were hydroxyphosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides, unidentified phosphoglycolipids, unidentified phospholipids and an unidentified lipid. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 and C17 : 0 10-methyl. Following the evidence of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic studies, it is proposed that strain SMC 256T represents a novel species in the genus Kutzneria, namely Kutzneria chonburiensis sp. nov. The type strain is SMC 256T ( = BCC 72675T = NBRC 110610T).

Three Gram-stain-positive, irregular-rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacteria were isolated from nematodes collected from Santa Antao, Cabo Verde (CBX151T, CBX152T) and Kakegawa, Japan (CBX130T). Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strains CBX130T, CBX151T and CBX152T were shown to belong to the genus Leucobacter. This affiliation was supported by chemotaxonomic data (2,4-diaminobutyric acid in the cell wall; major respiratory quinones MK-10 and MK-11; major polar lipids phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol; major fatty acids anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0). Strains CBX130T and CBX152T were found to share salient characteristics. Based on morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic and biochemical analysis, strain CBX152T represents a novel species of the genus Leucobacter, for which the name Leucobacter musarum sp. nov. (type strain CBX152T = DSM 27160T = CIP 110721T) is proposed. Two subspecies of Leucobacter musarum sp. nov. are proposed: Leucobacter musarum sp. nov. subsp. musarum subsp. nov. (type strain CBX152T = DSM 27160T = CIP 110721T) and Leucobacter musarum sp. nov. subsp. japonicus subsp. nov. (type strain CBX130T = DSM 27158T = CIP 110719T). The third novel strain, CBX151T, showed genetic similarities with Leucobacter celer NAL101T indicating that these strains belong to the same species. Based on morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic and biochemical differences it is proposed to split the species Leucobacter celer into two novel subspecies, Leucobacter celer subsp. celer subsp. nov. (type strain NAL101T = KACC 14220T = JCM 16465T) and Leucobacter celer subsp. astrifaciens subsp. nov. (type strain CBX151T = DSM 27159T = CIP 110720T), and to emend the description of Leucobacter celerShin et al. 2011.

A novel halophilic actinobacterium, designated strain TRM 49201T, was isolated from a hypersaline soil in Xinjiang Province, north-west China. The strain was aerobic, Gram-stain-positive and halophilic. The aerial mycelium was chaotic with irregular branches, and spherical sporangia containing several spherical spores developed at mycelial aggregations. The strain had an optimum NaCl concentration for growth of 8-13 % (w/v). The whole-cell sugar pattern of strain TRM 49201T consisted of xylose and ribose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-10(H2). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and four unknown phospholipids. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 70 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain TRM 49201T can be distinguished from representatives of Glycomyces, Stackebrandtia and Haloglycomyces, the three existing genera in the family Glycomycetaceae, based on low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities ( < 94.42 %). Strain TRM 49201T is thus considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Glycomycetaceae, for which the name Paraglycomyces xinjiangensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Paraglycomyces xinjiangensis is TRM 49201T ( = NRRL B-24926T = CCTCC AA 2013002T = KACC 17683T).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, motile and non-spore-forming actinobacterium, strain Y32T, was isolated from a deep-sea sediment of the western Pacific Ocean. Phylogenetic and phenotypic properties of the organism supported that it belonged to the genus Georgenia. Strain Y32T shared highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 97.8 % with Georgenia muralis 1A-CT, followed by Georgenia thermotolerans TT02-04T (97.4 %), Georgenia daeguensis 2C6-43T (97.2 %), Oceanitalea nanhaiensis JLT1488T (97.2 %), Georgenia ruanii YIM 004T (97.0 %) and Georgenia soli CC-NMPT-T3T (97.0 %). The organism grew in the presence of 0-10 % (w/v) NaCl, at 4-40 °C and at pH 6-11, with optimal growth occurring at 30-35 °C, at pH 7 and in the presence of 3.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The polar lipid profile of strain Y32T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and two phosphatidylinositol mannosides. Strain Y32T contained MK-8(H4) and MK-7(H4) as the major components of the menaquinone system, and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0 as the predominant fatty acids. Galactose was detected as the cell-wall sugar. The G+C content of the DNA was 71.2 mol%. Based on the results of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic analyses, it is considered that strain Y32T represents a novel species of the genus Georgenia, for which the name Georgenia subflava sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Y32T ( = LMG 28101T = CGMCC 1.12782T = JCM 19765T = MCCC 1A09955T).

A novel actinomycete strain, YN-5-1T, isolated from the rhizosphere soil of a medicinal plant, Aconitum napellus, was characterized by a polyphasic approach to determine its taxonomic position. The strain showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 97.3, 97.2 and 97.1 % to Nonomuraea turkmeniaca DSM 43926T, Nonomuraea ferruginea DSM 43553T and Nonomuraea candida DSM 45086T, respectively. A wide range of genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, as well as levels of DNA-DNA relatedness between strain YN-5-1T and N. turkmeniaca DSM 43926T (57.46 %), N. ferruginea DSM 43553T (53.50 %) and N. candida DSM 45086T (48.80 %), distinguished the novel isolate from its closest phylogenetic neighbours. The morphological characteristics of strain YN-5-1T were typical of the genus Nonomuraea. Chemotaxonomic characteristics, such as diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan, whole-cell sugars, phospholipid type, major menaquinone and major fatty acids, further supported the assignment of strain YN-5-1T to the genus Nonomuraea. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.1 mol%. Based on the above data, strain YN-5-1T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Nonomuraea, for which the name Nonomuraea flavida sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YN-5-1T ( = CCTCC AB 2012909T = KCTC 29143T).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, curved (selenoid), rod-shaped actinobacterium, designated KNCT, was isolated from the 0.2 μm-filtrate of river water in western Japan. Cells of strain KNCT were ultramicrosized (0.04-0.05 μm3). The strain grew at 15-37 °C, with no observable growth at 10 °C or 40 °C. The pH range for growth was 7-9, with weaker growth at pH 10. Growth was impeded by the presence of NaCl at concentrations greater than 1 %. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain KNCT showed relatively high sequence similarity (97.2 %) to Alpinimonas psychrophila Cr8-25T in the family Microbacteriaceae. However, strain KNCT formed an independent cluster with cultured, but as-yet-unidentified, species and environmental clones on the phylogenetic tree. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (41.0 %), iso-C16 : 0 (21.8 %), C16 : 0 (18.0 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (12.9 %), and the major menaquinones were MK-11 (71.3 %) and MK-12 (13.6 %). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol and two unknown glycolipids. The cell-wall muramic acid acyl type was acetyl. The peptidoglycan was B-type, and contained 3-hydroxyglutamic acid, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, alanine and lysine, with the latter being the diagnostic diamino acid. The G+C content of the genome was unusually low for actinobacteria (52.1 mol%), compared with other genera in the family Microbacteriaceae. Based on the phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic evidence, strain KNCT represents a novel species of a new genus within the family Microbacteriaceae, for which the name Aurantimicrobium minutum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is KNCT ( = NBRC 105389T = NCIMB 14875T).

A Gram-stain-positive bacterial strain, designated as NR2T, isolated from noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) branch was investigated using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The cells were small coccoid to ovoid, non-spore-forming and motile. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain was a representative of a member of the genus Brachybacterium, to which the most closely related neighbours were Brachybacterium squillarum M-6-3T (97.90 % similarity), Brachybacterium faecium DSM 4810T (97.50 %), Brachybacterium sacelli LMG 20345T (97.41 %), Brachybacterium phenoliresistens phenol-AT (97.36 %), Brachybacterium nesterenkovii DSM 9573T (97.36 %) and Brachybacterium rhamnosum LMG 19848T (97.32 %). The polar lipid profile of strain NR2T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, unknown phospholipids and unknown glycolipids. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-8, with MK-9 and MK-7 as minor components. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. Strain NR2T was clearly distinguishable from the type strains of related species on the basis of phylogenetic analysis, DNA-DNA hybridization, fatty acid composition data analysis and a range of physiological and comparison of biochemical characteristics. It is evident from the genotypic and phenotypic data that strain NR2T represents a novel species of the genus Brachybacterium, for which the name Brachybacterium hainanense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NR2T ( = DSM 29535T = CICC 10874T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-GQTH1-3T, was isolated from muddy soil collected from a stream in Qitaihe, Heilongjiang Province, north-east China and characterized using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the organism should be assigned to the genus Sphaerisporangium and forms a stable clade with its closest relative Sphaerisporangium rubeum JCM 13067T (98.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). Moreover, morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of strain NEAU-GQTH1-3T also confirmed the affiliation of the isolate to the genus Sphaerisporangium. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and the whole-cell sugars were glucose, galactose, madurose, mannose and ribose. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, two phosphatidylinositol mannosides, phosphoglycolipid, an unidentified phospholipid and an unidentified glycolipid. The major menaquinones were MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H2). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and 10-methyl C17 : 0. Mycolic acids were absent. The DNA G+C content was 70.4 mol%. However, the low level of DNA-DNA relatedness and some phenotypic characteristics allowed the isolate to be differentiated from its closest relative. Therefore, it is concluded that strain NEAU-GQTH1-3T represents a novel species of the genus Sphaerisporangium, for which the name Sphaerisporangium aureirubrum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-GQTH1-3T ( = CGMCC 4.7199T = JCM 30346T).

Strain THG-MD12T, a Gram-reaction-positive, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from rhizosphere soil of Ophiopogon japonicus in PR China. THG-MD12T was closely related to members of the genus Pseudoclavibacter and showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Pseudoclavibacter helvolus KCTC 19531T (98.8 %) and Pseudoclavibacter chungangensis KCTC 22691T (96.9 %). DNA-DNA hybridization showed 41.9 ± 2.1 % and 12.4 ± 0.9 % DNA reassociation with P. helvolus KCTC 19531T and P. chungangensis KCTC 22691T, respectively. Chemotaxonomic analyses revealed that strain THG-MD12T possesses menaquinone-9 as the predominant respiratory quinone, 2,4-diaminobutyric acid as the diamino acid in the peptidoglycan and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The polar lipid profile was found to consist of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, two unknown glycolipids and two unknown lipids. These data corroborated the affiliation of THG-MD12T to the genus Pseudoclavibacter. Thus, the isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Pseudoclavibacter terrae sp. nov. is proposed, with THG-MD12T as the type strain ( = CCTCC AB 2015124T = KCTC 39562T).

The taxonomic position of an actinobacterium strain, C296001T, isolated from a soil sample collected in Sarawak, Malaysia, was established using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetically, strain C296001T was closely associated with the genus Luteipulveratus and formed a distinct monophyletic clade with the only described species, Luteipulveratus mongoliensis NBRC 105296T. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain C296001T and L. mongoliensis was 98.7 %. DNA-DNA hybridization results showed that the relatedness of strain C296001T to L. mongoliensis was only 21.5 %. The DNA G+C content of strain C296001T was 71.7 mol%. Using a PacBio RS II system, whole genome sequences for strains C296001T and NBRC 105296T were obtained. The genome sizes of 4.5 Mbp and 5.4 Mbp determined were similar to those of other members of the family Dermacoccaceae. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained lysine, alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and serine, representing the peptidoglycan type A4α l-Lys-l-Ser-d-Asp. The major menaquinones were MK-8(H4), MK-8 and MK-8(H2). Phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphoglycolipid were the polar lipids, while the whole-cell sugars were glucose, fucose and lesser amounts of ribose and galactose. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 1 H, anteiso-C17 : 1ω9c, iso-C18 : 0 and 10-methyl C17 : 0. Chemotaxonomic analyses showed that C296001T had typical characteristics of members of the genus Luteipulveratus, with the main differences occurring in phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of the phenotypic and chemotaxonomic evidence, it is proposed that strain C296001T be classified as a representative of a novel species in the genus Luteipulveratus, for which the name Luteipulveratus halotolerans sp. nov. is recommended. The type strain is C296001T ( = ATCC TSD-4T = JCM 30660T).

A Gram-staining-positive, heterotrophic, anaerobic, non-spore-forming, non-motile, rod-shaped strain, OAct400T, belonging to the genus Microbacterium was isolated from a sediment collected from a depth of 2093 m in the South China Sea, China. The strain was identified using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The strain grew well on yeast extract/malt extract agar (ISP 2) and nutrient agar media, and formed no aerial mycelium and no diffusible pigments on any media tested. The strain grew in the presence of 0-8 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2-4 %), at pH 5.0-10.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and at 4-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C). Strain OAct400T contained ornithine as the diagnostic diamino acid. The whole-cell sugars were dominated by glucose and galactose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-11 (51 %) and MK-10 (24 %). The major phospholipids were phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (59.35 %), iso-C16 : 0 (17.89 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (16.09 %). DNA-DNA relatedness with Microbacterium amylolyticum DSM 24221T and Microbacterium gubbeenense CIP 107184T, the nearest phylogenetic relatives (97.73 and 97.44 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively) was 31.3 ± 2.1 and 28.7 ± 1.2 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, a novel species, Microbacterium nanhaiense sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is OAct400T ( = CGMCC 4.7181T = DSM 26811T = KCTC 29185T).

A novel γ-radiation-resistant and Gram-staining-positive actinobacterium designated BMG 8133T was isolated from a limestone collected in the Sahara desert of Tunisia. The strain produced dry, pale-pink colonies with an optimum growth at 35–40 °C and pH 6.5–8.0. Chemotaxonomic and molecular characteristics of the isolate matched those described for members of the genus Geodermatophilus. The peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as diagnostic diamino acid. The main polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine and one unspecified glycolipid. MK-9(H4) was the dominant menaquinone. Galactose and glucose were detected as diagnostic sugars. The major cellular fatty acids were branched-chain saturated acids iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content of the novel strain was 74.5 %. The 16S rRNA gene sequence showed highest sequence identity with Geodermatophilus ruber (98.3 %). Based on phenotypic results and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain BMG 8133T is proposed to represent a novel species, Geodermatophilus sabuli sp. nov. The type strain is BMG 8133T ( = DSM 46844T = CECT 8820T).

A Gram-stain-positive actinobacterial strain, Miq-4T, was isolated from soil around Meighan wetland in the centre of Iran. Strain Miq-4T was strictly aerobic, catalase- and oxidase-positive. The isolate grew in the presence of 3–15 % (w/v) NaCl, at 20–40 °C and pH 6.0–11.0. The optimum NaCl, temperature and pH for growth were 7.0 %, 30 °C and 7.0–8.5, respectively. The cell wall of strain Miq-4T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid and glucose and ribose as the whole-cell sugars. The polar lipid pattern consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannoside. Strain Miq-4T synthesized cellular fatty acids of anteiso- and iso-branched types, including anteiso-C17 : 0, anteiso- C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0, and the major respiratory quinone was MK-9(H4). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 68.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and characteristic patterns of 16S rRNA gene signature nucleotides revealed that strain Miq-4T belongs to the family Glycomycetaceae and showed the closest phylogenetic similarity with Haloglycomyces albus YIM 92370T (94.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). On the basis of phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain Miq-4T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Glycomycetaceae, for which the name Salininema proteoliyticum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is Miq-4T ( = IBRC-M 10908T = LMG 28391T). An emended description of the family Glycomycetaceae is also proposed in order to include features of the new genus.

Two actinomycete strains, designated 10A08AT and 10A08BT, were isolated from marine sediment samples of the South China Sea and their taxonomic positions were determined by a polyphasic approach. The two Gram-stain-positive, aerobic strains produced branched substrate mycelium and aerial hyphae, and no diffusible pigment was produced in the media tested. At maturity, spore chains were formed on aerial hyphae and all mycelium fragmented with age. Whole-cell hydrolysates of both strains contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and no diagnostic sugars. Their predominant menaquinones (>10 %) were MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-10(H6) for strain 10A08AT and MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6), MK-10(H4) and MK-10(H6) for strain 10A08BT. The polar lipids detected from the two strains were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and unknown phosphoglycolipids and phospholipids. The major fatty acids (>10 %) of both strains were iso-C16 : 0 and summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B). The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains 10A08AT and 10A08BT were 70.9 and 71.6 mol%, respectively. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, the two strains were shown to be most closely related to species of the genus Nocardiopsis. DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness values of < 70 % between these two isolates and their closest neighbour, Nocardiopsis terrae YIM 90022T, and between the two strains supported the conclusion that they represent two novel species. Based on phylogenetic analysis and phenotypic and genotypic data, it is concluded that the two isolates belong to the genus Nocardiopsis, and the names Nocardiopsis oceani sp. nov. (type strain 10A08AT = DSM 45931T = BCRC 16951T) and Nocardiopsis nanhaiensis sp. nov. (type strain 10A08BT = CGMCC 47227T = BCRC 16952T) are proposed.

A novel Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, motile, non-spore-forming coccus-shaped actinomycete, designated strain YIM 121300T, was isolated from alkaline sediment in Yuanjiang, Yunnan province, south-west China. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain YIM 121300T was affiliated to the genus Kineococcus, and was closely related to Kineococcus aurantiacus IFO 15268T (97.3 % similarity). 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to other species of the genus Kineococcus was < 97 %. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The whole-cell sugars contained arabinose, galactose, glucose, mannose and ribose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H2). Mycolic acids were not detected. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside and an unknown phospholipid. The predominant fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 1 A. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 75.1 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness (55 ± 4 % to K. aurantiacus IFO 15268T) and differential phenotypic data demonstrated that strain YIM 121300T was distinguished from all related species of the genus Kineococcus. On the basis of data from the present polyphasic study, the organism should be assigned to a novel species of the genus Kineococcus, for which the name Kineococcus gypseus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 121300T ( = CCTCC AA 2013232T = DSM 27627T).

A novel aerobic actinomycete, designated strain I12A-02601T, was isolated from a desert soil crusts sample collected from the Shapotou region of Tengger Desert, north-west China. The substrate mycelia of this isolate were well-developed and branched, but not fragmented. The maturity aerial mycelia formed short chains of small, rod-shaped spores. The strain contained ll-diaminopimelic acid, dd-diaminopimelic acid, galactose, glucose, ribose and xylose in its whole-cell hydrolysates. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, N-acetylglucosamine-containing phospholipids, phosphatidylinositolmannoside and glycolipids. The predominant menaquinones were MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H8). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.2 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequences comparison showed that strain I12A-02601T was most closely related to members of the family Nocardioidaceae, such as Actinopolymorpha alba YIM 48868T (93.3 % sequence similarity), Actinopolymorpha pittospori PIP 143T (93.2 %), and Flindersiella endophytica EUM 378T (93.2 %). In the phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain I12A-02601T formed a clade with the members of the genera Flindersiella, Thermasporomyces, and Actinopolymorpha in the family Nocardioidaceae. Combined data from this taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach, led to the conclusion that strain I12A-02601T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Nocardioidaceae, for which the name Tenggerimyces mesophilus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is I12A-02601T ( = CPCC 203544T = DSM 45829T = NBRC 109454T).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, straight or slightly bent rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterium, designated strain CC5-806T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from a wild karst cave in the Wulong region, Chongqing, PR China and examined using a polyphasic approach to clarify its taxonomic position. This bacterium did not produce substrate mycelium or aerial hyphae, and no diffusible pigments were observed on the media tested. Strain CC5-806T grew optimally without NaCl at 20 °C and at pH 7.0. Phylogenetic analysis, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, indicated that strain CC5-806T belonged to the family Microbacteriaceae and showed the highest levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Frigoribacterium endophyticum EGI 6500707T (97.56 %), Frigoribacterium faeni 801T (97.53 %) and Glaciihabitans tibetensis MP203T (97.42 %). Phylogenetic trees revealed that strain CC5-806T did not show a clear affiliation to any genus within the family Microbacteriaceae. The DNA G+C content of strain CC5-806T was 62.6 mol%. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained l-lysine as a diagnostic diamino acid. The predominant menaquinones were MK-11, MK-10 and MK-9. Phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified glycolipid, four unidentified phospholipids and other polar lipids were detected in the polar lipid extracts. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0. On the basis of the phylogenetic analysis, and phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain CC5-806T was distinguishable from phylogenetically related genera in the family Microbacteriaceae. It represents a novel species of a novel genus, for which the name Lysinibacter cavernae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC5-806T ( = DSM 27960T = CGMCC 1.14983T).

The genus Microbacterium has been isolated from the environment, dairy goods, and human clinical specimens. Although, in our previous studies, some Microbacterium species were infrequently detected in oral samples collected from humans, there is currently no report that these organisms, which are capable of causing serious systemic infections, were isolated from the human oral cavity. The aim of the present study was to develop a selective medium to isolate the representative Microbacterium species most frequently detected in human clinical specimens, and reveal the distribution of individual Microbacterium species in the oral cavity. The growth recoveries of representative Microbacterium species on the selective medium, designated as MSM, were sufficient. Moreover, the growth of other representative oral bacteria was markedly inhibited on the selective medium. The proportion of Microbacterium species in the saliva samples of 60 subjects, 20 of whom were removable denture wearers, was then examined. The proportion of these organisms was also examined in environmental samples obtained by swabbing 20 washstands. PCR primers were designed for representative Microbacterium species. The genus Microbacterium was detected in 45% of the saliva and denture plaque samples collected from the twenty removable denture wearers, but was absent in the saliva of the forty non-denture wearers. On the other hand, these organisms were detected in all environmental samples. The genus Microbacterium accounted for 0.00003%, 0.0001%, and 12.6% of the total cultivable bacteria number on the BHI medium in the saliva and denture plaque samples of removable denture wearers and in the environmental samples, respectively. The most predominant Microbacterium species in all positive samples was Microbacterium oxydans. These results indicated that the genus Microbacterium was not a part of the normal flora in the human oral cavity, except for subjects wearing dentures that were contaminated by the environment, and the selective medium, designated as MSM, was useful for isolating Microbacterium species, which are frequently encountered in human clinical specimens, from the various samples., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. A novel endophytic actinomycete, designated strain EGI 60009T, was isolated from the roots of Glycyrrhiza uralensis F. collected from Xinjiang Province, north-west China. The isolate was able to grow in the presence of 0-9% (w/v) NaCl. Strain EGI 60009T had particular morphological properties: the substrate mycelia fragmented into rod-like elements and aerial mycelia differentiated into short spore chains. ll-2, 6-Diaminopimelic acid was the cell-wall diamino acid and rhamnose, galactose and glucose were the cell-wall sugars. MK-9(H4) was the predominant menaquinone. The major fatty acids of strain EGI 60009T were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C17 : 0, iso-C17 : 1 and I/anteiso-C17 : 0 B. Mycolic acids were absent. The DNA G+C content of strain EGI 60009T was 70.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain EGI 60009T belongs to the family Jiangellaceae and formed a distinct clade in the phylogenetic tree. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain EGI 60009T and other members of the genera Jiangella and Haloactinopolyspora were 96.1-96.4 and 95.7-96.0%, respectively. Based on these results and supported by morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic data and numerous phenotypic differences, a novel species of a new genus, Phytoactinopolyspora endophytica gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain of Phytoactinopolyspora endophytica is EGI 60009T ( = KCTC 29657T = CPCC204078T).

An aerobic, Gram-stain-positive actinomycete, designated strain 3SM4-07T, was characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The strain produced branching mycelium which fragmented into short or elongated rods. The whole-cell hydrolysates contained ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, with glucose and ribose as the main sugars. The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15  :  0, iso-C15  :  0 and iso-C16  :  0.The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). Phospholipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannoside. Mycolic acids were absent. The DNA G+C content was 72.3 mol%. Strain 3SM4-07T formed a phylogenetic line within the genus Jiangella and its 16S rRNA gene sequence was related most closely to Jiangella alkaliphila D8-87T (99.0% similarity), Jiangella muralis 15-Je-017T (98.8%), Jiangella alba YIM 61503T (98.6%) and Jiangella gansuensis YIM 002T (98.6%). However, mean DNA-DNA hybridization values revealed that strain 3SM4-07T differed from the closest species previously described in this genus. Data from phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular analyses between strain 3SM4-07T and recognized species of the genus Jiangella indicate that strain 3SM4-07T is a representative of a novel species of the genus Jiangella, for which the name Jiangella mangrovi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 3SM4-07T ( = BCC 60398T = NBRC 109648T).

A Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, coccus-shaped bacterium, strain THG-a14T, was isolated from soil of Gyeyang mountain in Incheon, Republic of Korea. The isolate grew optimally at 28 °C, at pH 6.5-7.5 and with 0-3 % (w/v) NaCl. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, strain THG-a14T was closely related to Phycicoccus aerophilus 5516T-20T (97.7 %), P. ginsenosidimutans BXN5-13T (97.6 %), 'P. ochangensis' L1b-b9 (97.4 %) and P. bigeumensis MSL-03 (97.2 %). The DNA G+C content of strain THG-a14T was 71.6 mol%. In DNA-DNA hybridization, the DNA-DNA relatedness between strain THG-a14T and its closest phylogenetically neighbours was below 50.0 %. Strain THG-a14T was characterized chemotaxonomically as having meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. Strain THG-a14T contained glucose and ribose as whole-cell-wall sugars and menaquinone MK-8(H4) as the major isoprenoid quinone. Polar lipids in strain THG-a14T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphoaminoglycolipids, unidentified phospholipids and unidentified lipids. The major fatty acids were iso-C16:0, iso-C15:0 and C17:1ω8c. On the basis of our polyphasic taxonomy study, strain THG-a14T represents a novel species within the genus Phycicoccus, for which the name Phycicoccussoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is THG-a14T ( = KACC 17892T = JCM 19837T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, coccoid, non-motile bacterium, designated strain AMV4T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from a mud volcano located in the Andaman Islands, India. The colony was pale orange. Strain AMV4T was positive for oxidase, aesculinase, lysine decarboxylase and ornithine decarboxylase activities and negative for amylase, catalase, cellulase, protease, urease and lipase activities. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain AMV4T was a member of the order Actinomycetales and was closely related to Aquipuribacter hungaricus with a sequence similarity of 97.13% (pairwise alignment). Phylogenetic analyses showed that strain AMV4T clustered with Aquipuribacter hungaricus and was distantly related to the other genera of the family Intrasporangiaceae. DNA-DNA hybridization between strains AMV4T and Aquipuribacter hungaricus IV-75T showed a relatedness of 28%. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (6.9%), anteiso-C15 : 0 (25.3%), C16 : 0 (12.9%), anteiso-C16 : 0 (5.6%), C18 : 1ω9c (19.8%) and C18 : 3ω6,9,12c (9.1%). The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain AMV4T was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Strain AMV4T contained MK-10(H4) as the predominant respiratory quinone. The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified glycolipid, two unidentified phospholipids and five unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain AMV4T was 74.3 mol%. Based on data from this taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach, it is proposed that strain AMV4T represents a novel species of the genus Aquipuribacter, with the suggested name Aquipuribacter nitratireducens sp. nov. The type strain is AMV4T ( = CCUG 58430T = DSM 22863T = NBRC 107137T).

Strain XMU 506T, isolated from the rhizosphere soil of an ornamental plant, Lantana camara L., collected from Xiamen City, China, was identified using a polyphasic approach to clarify its taxonomic position. The aerial mycelium of this organism formed long straight or curved chains of spores and sporangium-like structures. The optimum growth occurred at 28-30 °C, pH 7.0 with 0-1% NaCl. Strain XMU 506T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (96.5%) to Kibdelosporangium philippinense DSM 44226T, and formed a monophyletic clade in the 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic tree together with the type strains of the genus Kibdelosporangium. The chemotaxonomic properties further supported the assignment of strain XMU 506T to the genus Kibdelosporangium: meso-diaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic amino acid in the cell wall peptidoglycan; mycolic acids were not present in the cell wall; the whole-cell hydrolysates contained arabinose, galactose, glucose and ribose. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4); the phospholipids of the isolate comprised phosphatidylethanolamine, OH-phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and unidentified amino-, glyco- and phospholipids; the major fatty acids of the strain were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 ω6c and iso-C16 : 1 H. The G+C content of genomic DNA was 67.3 mol%. Based on the results of phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic and genotypic characterization, strain XMU 506T represents a novel species in the genus Kibdelosporangium, for which the name Kibdelosporangium lantanae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XMU 506T ( = KCTC 29675T = MCCC 1K00430T).

Two novel Gram-staining-positive bacteria, designated DCY60T and DCY90T, were isolated from soil of a ginseng field in the Republic of Korea. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed the two novel strains were closely related to members of the genus Humibacter with greatest similarity to Humibacter antri KCTC 33009T (98.8 and 98.4% for DCY60T and DCY90T, respectively). The predominant menaquinones present were MK-11 and MK-12. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C17 : 0 and summed feature 8 containing C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c. The DNA G+C contents of strains DCY60T and DCY90T were 62.8 and 66.8 mol%, respectively. The peptidoglycan of both strains contained the amino acids ornithine, 2,4-diaminobutyric acid, alanine, glutamic acid and glycine. The cell-wall sugars of strain DCY60T comprised glucose, galactose, rhamnose and xylose, while strain DCY90T contained glucose, galactose, rhamnose and ribose. The major polar lipids of both strains were phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified glycolipid, and an unknown phospholipid. On the basis of the phenotypic analysis strains DCY60T and DCY90T represent novel species of the genus Humibacter, for which names Humibacter ginsengiterrae sp. nov. (type strain DCY60T = KCTC 33520T = JCM 30079T) and Humibacter ginsengisoli sp. nov. (type strain DCY90T = KCTC 33521T = JCM 30080T) are proposed.

An actinomycete strain, designated YIM 690008T, was isolated from Daucus carota collected from South Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. The strain grew well on most media tested and no diffusible pigment was produced. The aerial mycelium formed wrinkled single spores and short spore chains, some of which were branched. The whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, glucose, mannose, ribose, galactose and rhamnose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-10(H4), MK-10(H6), MK-10(H8) and MK-10(H2). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides, some unknown phospholipids, glycolipids and polar lipids. The major fatty acids were i-C16 : 0, ai-C17 : 0 and C18 : 1ω9c. The DNA G+C content of the genomic DNA was 63.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolate belongs to the family Nocardiopsaceae. However, based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, it was concluded that strain YIM 690008T represents a novel genus and novel species of the family Nocardiopsaceae, for which the name Actinorugispora endophytica gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain YIM 690008T = DSM 46770T = JCM 30099T = KCTC 29480T) is proposed.

A novel bacterial strain, designated Re6(T), was isolated from forest soil collected in Campbell University, North Carolina. The cells are aerobic, Gram-positive, non-motile, and rod shaped. Growth occurred at 4-42 °C (optimum, 25 °C), pH 6-9 (optimum, pH 6), and in 0-3 % NaCl (w/v). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain Re6(T) belonged to the genus Leucobacter and showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Leucobacter iarius JCM 14736(T) (98.3 %), Leucobacter luti JCM 14920(T) (97.9 %), Leucobacter komagatae JCM 9414(T) (97.8 %), and Leucobacter denitrificans KACC 14055(T) (97.7 %). Strain Re6(T) contained anteiso-C15:0 (45.2 %), iso-C16:0 (17.1 %), and anteiso-C17:0 (32.6 %) as the major cellular fatty acids; MK-11 as the major respiratory quinone; L-diaminobutyric acid as the diagnostic diamine acid in cell wall peptidoglycan; and diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol as the main polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of the strain Re6(T) was 66.6 mol%. DNA-DNA hybridization results showed similarity values less than 50 % for DNA samples from the most closely related type strains of L. iarius, L. luti, and L. komagatae. On the basis of the data from the polyphasic analysis, strain Re6(T) is considered to be a representative novel species in the genus Leucobacter, for which the name Leucobacter humi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Re6(T) (KEMC 7301-006(T) = JCM 18638(T)).

Strain M-SA3-94T, an aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, ovoid- to rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium, was isolated from the marine sediment of Ardley cove, King George Island, Antarctica. Strain M-SA3-94T grew optimally at pH 5.0-6.0, 20 °C and in the presence of 1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, indicated that strain M-SA3-94T belonged to the genus Nocardioides in the family Nocardioidaceae, clustering with Nocardioides plantarum NCIMB 12834T, Nocardioides ginsengagri BX5-10T, Nocardioides marinquilinus CL-GY44T and Nocardioides lianchengensis D94-1T (with 96.1 %, 95.9 %, 94.5 % and 94.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively). The chemotaxonomic properties of strain M-SA3-94T were similar to those of members of the genus Nocardioides with validly published names. The major fatty acid was iso-C16 : 0. The polar lipid pattern contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and three unknown phospholipids. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was ll-2, 6-diaminopimelic acid. MK-8(H4) was the predominant menaquinone and the DNA G+C content of this strain was 66.7 mol%. On the basis of these phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data, strain M-SA3-94T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides antarcticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M-SA3-94T ( = CCTCC AB2014053T = LMG 28254T).

The historical relics exposed to the natural environment during the long-term were vulnerable to microbial invasion. According to some new studies, microorganism of Pseudonocardia may is one of the main groups on the surface of mural paintings and petroglyphs, causing damage to the paints. Based on recent research progress, we reviewed the phenomenon according to the relationship between the ancient paintings and the growth conditions of Pseudonocardia, which could provide a new theory basis for the protection of cultural relics especially mural paintings and petroglyphs.

Dynamic anaerobic-aerobic feast-famine conditions are applied to wastewater treatment plants to select polyphosphate-accumulating organisms to carry out enhanced biological phosphorus removal. Acetate is a well-known substrate to stimulate this process, and here we show that different amino acids also are suitable substrates, with glycine as the most promising. (13)C-labeled glycine and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were applied to investigate uptake and potential storage products when activated sludge was fed with glycine under anaerobic conditions. Glycine was consumed by the biomass, and the majority was stored intracellularly as free glycine and fermentation products. Subsequently, in the aerobic phase without addition of external substrate, the stored glycine was consumed. The uptake of glycine and oxidation of intracellular metabolites took place along with a release and uptake of orthophosphate, respectively. Fluorescence in situ hybridization combined with microautoradiography using (3)H-labeled glycine revealed uncultured actinobacterial Tetrasphaera as a dominant glycine consumer. Experiments with Tetrasphaera elongata as representative of uncultured Tetrasphaera showed that under anaerobic conditions it was able to take up labeled glycine and accumulate this and other labeled metabolites to an intracellular concentration of approximately 4 mM. All components were consumed under subsequent aerobic conditions. Intracellular accumulation of amino acids seems to be a novel storage strategy for polyphosphate-accumulating bacteria under dynamic anaerobic-aerobic feast-famine conditions., (Copyright © 2015, American Society for Microbiology. A novel bacterium (strain NIO-1002(T)) belonging to the genus Microbacterium was isolated from a marine sediment sample in Chorao Island, Goa Province, India. Its morphology, physiology, biochemical features and 16S rRNA gene sequence were characterized. Cells of this strain were Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, non-spore-forming rods that formed yellow-pigmented colonies. It grew in 0-12% (w/v) NaCl and at 25-37 °C, with optimal growth at 30 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain NIO-1002(T) is associated with members of the genus Microbacterium, with highest sequence similarity with Microbacterium hominis CIP 105731(T) (98.1%) and Microbacterium testaceum KCTC 9103(T) (98.0%). Within the phylogenetic tree, this novel strain shared a branching point with M. hominis CIP 105731(T). The DNA G+C content was 66.5 mol% and DNA-DNA hybridization relatedness between NIO-1002(T), M. hominis CIP 105731(T) and M. testaceum KCTC 9103(T) was 39.0 ± 2.0% and 41.0 ± 2.0%, respectively. The major fatty acids were ai-C15 : 0, i-C16 : 0 and ai-C17 : 0 and the diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan of NIO-1002(T) was lysine. Data obtained from DNA-DNA hybridization and chemotaxonomic phenotypic analysis support the conclusion that strain NIO-1002(T) represents a novel species within the genus Microbacterium. The name Microbacterium enclense sp. nov. is proposed, with NIO-1002(T) ( = NCIM 5454(T) = DSM 25125(T) = CCTCC AB 2011120(T)) as the type strain.

A Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated and rod-shaped or ovoid bacterial strain, designated BS-12M(T), was isolated from a tidal flat sediment on the South Sea, South Korea. Strain BS-12M(T) grew optimally at 35 °C, at pH 7.0-8.0 and in the presence of 2.0% (w/v) NaCl. The neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain BS-12M(T) fell within the cluster comprising the type strains of species of the genus Demequina, joining the type strain of Demequina aestuarii with which it shared the highest sequence similarity (98.6%). It exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.1-97.9% to the type strains of other species of the genus Demequina. The peptidoglycan type of strain BS-12M(T) was A4β based on L-Orn -L-Ser -D-Glu. Strain BS-12M(T) contained demethylmenaquinone-9(H4) as the major menaquinone and anteiso-C15:0 and C16:0 as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids of strain BS-12M(T) were phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositolmannoside. The DNA G+C content of strain BS-12M(T) was 70.7 mol% and its DNA-DNA relatedness values with the type strains of five phylogenetically related species of the genus Demequina were 15-34%. Differential phenotypic properties, together with phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain BS-12M(T) is separate from other species of the genus Demequina. On the basis of the data presented, strain BS-12M(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Demequina, for which the name Demequina activiva sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BS-12M(T) ( =KCTC 29674(T) = NBRC 110675T).

A novel marine actinomycete, designated B374(T), was isolated from a marine sponge, Glodia corticostylifera, which was collected from São Paulo, Brasil. The taxonomic position of B374(T) was established by using data derived from a polyphasic approach. The organism showed a combination of chemotaxonomic and morphological characteristics consistent with its classification in the genus Marmoricola and it formed a distinct phyletic line in the clade of the genus Marmoricola, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences. Strain B374(T) was most closely related to Marmoricola aequoreus SST-45(T) (98.5% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), but was distinguished from this strain and from the other type strains of species of the genus Marmoricola on the basis of a combination of phenotypic properties. The data obtained, therefore, indicates that isolate B374(T) ( = CBMAI 1089(T) = DSM 28169(T)) should be classified as a novel species of the genus Marmoricola, for which the name Marmoricola aquaticus sp. nov. is proposed.

Strain SB026T was isolated from Brazilian rainforest soil and its taxonomic position established using data from a polyphasic study. The organism showed a combination of chemotaxonomic and morphological features consistent with its classification in the genus Amycolatopsis and formed a branch in the Amycolatopsis 16S rRNA gene tree together with Amycolatopsis bullii NRRL B-24847T, Amycolatopsis plumensis NRRL B-24324T, Amycolatopsis tolypomycina DSM 44544T and Amycolatopsis vancoresmycina NRRL B-24208T. It was related most closely to A. bullii NRRL B-24847T (99.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), but was distinguished from this strain by a low level of DNA-DNA relatedness (~46 %) and discriminatory phenotypic properties. Based on the combined genotypic and phenotypic data, it is proposed that the isolate should be classified in the genus Amycolatopsis as representing a novel species, Amycolatopsis rhabdoformis sp. nov. The type strain is SB026T ( = CBMAI 1694T = CMAA 1285T = NCIMB 14900T).

An endophytic actinobacterial strain RZ36T, isolated from roots of the salt-marsh plant Halimione portulacoides, was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic characterization. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that this strain belonged to the genus Microbacterium. The closest phylogenetic relative was Microbacterium hominis DSM 12509T, with a pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.8 %. The DNA-DNA hybridization value between strain RZ36T and M. hominis DSM 12509T was 16 %. The affiliation to the genus Microbacterium was corroborated by phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics. The cell-wall peptidoglycan type was B2β and the diagnostic diamino acid was ornithine. Whole-cell sugars detected were galactose, glucose, rhamnose, ribose and xylose. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 and the major menaquinone was MK-11 (64 %). Main polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and two unknown glycolipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 69.7 mol%. Thus, on the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain RZ36T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Microbacterium, for which the name Microbacterium proteolyticum sp. nov. (type strain RZ36T = DSM 27100T = CECT 8356T) is proposed.

One bacterial strain, designated KIS75-12T, isolated from a soil sample collected from Wonsando island located in Boryeong city, Republic of Korea, was characterized as aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-flagellated and a short rod. It grew between temperatures of 15-37 °C, pH 4-9 and 0-3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. The 16S rRNA gene analysis showed the strain was moderately related to Jatrophihabitans endophyticus S9-650T (97.7 %) and revealed low sequence similarity (≤94.7 %) with all the other species with validly published names. Its major fatty acid was iso-C16 : 0. The predominant menaquinone of strain KIS75-12T was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol and several small amounts of phosphatidylinositol, aminolipids and glycolipid. The peptidoglycan contained meso-A2pm as diagnostic diamino acid and the peptidoglycan type is A4γ. The genomic DNA G+C content of the type strain was 72.1 mol%. The combined phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data showed that strain KIS75-12T could be clearly distinguished from the only member of the genus Jatrophihabitans,J. endophyticus. Therefore, the results of this study indicate the existence of a representative of a novel species of the genus Jatrophihabitans, for which we propose the name Jatrophihabitans soli sp. nov., with strain KIS75-12T ( = KACC 17298T = DSM 45908T  = NBRC 109658T) as the type strain. An emended description of the genus Jatrophihabitans is also given.

A novel endophytic actinobacterium, designated strain YIM 64602T, was isolated from healthy stems of Tripterygium wilfordii. It grew at 15-40 °C, pH 6.0-9.0 and in the presence of 0-3 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain YIM 64602T belongs to the genus Stackebrandtia. Whole-cell hydrolysates of strain YIM 64602T contained the amino acid meso-diaminopimelic acid with the sugars mannose, rhamnose and glucose, and a trace of ribose. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine and phosphatidylethanolamine. MK-10(H6), MK-10(H4) and MK-11(H4) were the predominant components in the quinone system. The fatty-acid pattern was mainly composed of the saturated branched-chain acids iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 72.4 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed the highest pairwise sequence identity (96.0-98.5 %) with the members of the genus Stackebrandtia. Strain YIM 64602T displayed a DNA-DNA relatedness of 43.9±0.4 % with the type strain Stackebrandtia albiflava YIM 45751T. Based on evidence from this polyphasic study, strain YIM 64602T ( = BCRC 16954T = DSM 45928T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Stackebrandtia, for which the name Stackebrandtia endophytica is proposed.

A novel actinomycete, A-T 8343T was isolated from a moist evergreen forest soil sample collected in the Trat Province, Thailand. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain A-T 8343T belonged to the genus Sinosporangium and was closely related to Sinosporangium siamense A-T 1946T (98.81 %) and Sinosporangium album 6014T (98.54 %). The DNA-DNA relatedness values were 21.8-27 % with S. siamense A-T 1946T and 31.1-31.9 % with S. album 6014T, which were significantly below 70 %. The result differentiated A-T 8343T from the closest species. The organism developed spherical sporangia containing non-motile spores on aerial mycelia. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars contained rhamnose, ribose, madurose and glucose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H2) and MK-9(H4). The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, hydroxyl-phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, lyso-phosphatidylethanolamine, N-acetylglucosamine-containing phospholipids, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol-mannosides, aminophosphoglycolipid and one unknown phospholipid. The major cellular fatty acids were saturated C16 : 0, iso C16 : 0, unsaturated C16 : 1 and C18 : 1. Following an evaluation of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic characteristics, the new isolate is proposed as a representative novel species of the genus Sinosporangium to be named Sinosporangiumfuscum sp. nov. The type strain is A-T 8343T ( = BCC 52770T = NBRC 109516T).

The taxonomic position of an endophytic actinomycete, strain GKU 157T, isolated from the roots of a jambolan plum tree (Syzygium cumini L. Skeels) collected at Khao Khitchakut National Park, Chantaburi province, Thailand, was determined using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain GKU 157T belongs to the genus Actinomadura and formed a distinct phyletic line with Actinomadura chibensis NBRC 106107T (98.6 % similarity). Strain GKU 157T formed an extensively branched, non-fragmenting substrate mycelium and aerial hyphae that differentiated into hooked to short spiral chains of about 20 non-motile spores with a warty surface. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and the whole-cell sugars were galactose, glucose, madurose, mannose and ribose. The N-acyl type of muramic acid was acetyl. Mycolic acids were absent. The phospholipids included phosphatidylglycerol (PG), diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylinositolmannoside (PIM) and two unknown phospholipids (PLs). The major menaquinone was MK-9(H6) and the predominant fatty acids were C16:0, iso-C16:0, C18:1ω9c, C18:0 and 10-methyl C18:0 (tuberculostearic acid). The genomic DNA G+C content was 73.1 mol%. A combination of DNA-DNA hybridization results and significant differences from related species in cultural, physiological and chemical characteristics indicated that strain GKU 157T represents a novel species of the genus Actinomadura, for which the name Actinomadura syzygii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GKU 157T ( = BCC 70456T = NBRC 110399T).

Two strains of species of the genus Marmoricola, designated KIS18-7T and JOS5-1T, were isolated from soil samples in Korea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain KIS18-7T showed highest similarities with Marmoricola scoriae Sco-D01T (97.8 %), Marmoricola aequoreus SST-45T (97.6 %) and Marmoricola aurantiacus BC 361T (97.3 %), and strain JOS5-1T had highest sequence similarities with M. aequoreus SST-45T (97.5 %) and Marmoricola bigeumensis MSL-05T (97.3 %). The sequence similarity between KIS18-7T and JOS5-1T was 98.1 %. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these strains grouped with species of the genus Marmoricola. The major fatty acids of strain KIS18-7T were iso-C16 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c, and C17 : 1ω8c, C18 : 0 10-methyl (TBSA), C18 : 1ω9c, C17 : 0 10-methyl and C16 : 0 2-OH for strain JOS5-1T. Strain KIS18-7T contained the polar lipids, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylcholine, while strain JOS5-1T contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown aminolipid and two unknown phospholipids. The peptidoglycan of both strains contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and a single glycine residue as the interpeptide bridge (type A3γ). The major menaquinone of both strains was MK-8(H4). The G+C contents of the DNA of strains KIS18-7T and JOS5-1T were 68.0 mol% and 62.9 mol%, respectively. These data demonstrate that strains KIS18-7T and JOS5-1T are representatives of two novel species of the genus Marmoricola, for which the names Marmoricola solisilvae sp. nov. (type strain KIS18-7T = KACC 17307T = DSM 27140T = NBRC 109601T) and Marmoricola terrae sp. nov. (type strain JOS5-1T = KACC 17308T = DSM 27141T = NBRC 109602T) are proposed.

A 10-yr-old female okapi (Okapia johnstoni) at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park was evaluated for intermittent malaise, inappetence, occasional cough, abdominal splinting, and licking at both flanks. Physical examination revealed tachypnea, tachycardia, and fluid sounds on thoracic auscultation. Transthoracic ultrasound showed multiple uniform, anechoic filled structures in the right and left pleural space. Surgical exploration of the thoracic cavity revealed bilateral, mature, fibrous, compartmentalizing adhesions between the visceral and parietal pleura, confirming a diagnosis of chronic, infectious, fibrinous pleuritis. The suspected etiology was occult aspiration pneumonia secondary to historical episodes of regurgitation associated with general anesthesia. Culture of the pleural fluid and fibrous adhesions grew Trueperella (Arcanobacterium) pyogenes, Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, and few Fusobacterium species. Treatment consisted of chest-tube placement to establish drainage, thoracic lavage, unilateral surgical debridement, and long-term antibiotics. The animal made a complete clinical recovery over 7 mo.

A moderately halophilic actinomycete strain, designated AH97T, was isolated from Saharan soil in the Hoggar region (south Algeria) and was subjected to polyphasic taxonomic characterization. The morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of the strain were consistent with those of the genus Actinoalloteichus. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison revealed that strain AH97T shared the highest degree of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Actinoalloteichus hymeniacidonis DSM 45092T (99.3 %) and Actinoalloteichus nanshanensis DSM 45655T (98.7 %). However, DNA-DNA hybridization studies showed only 26.5 % relatedness with A. hymeniacidonis DSM 45092T and 28.0 % with A. nanshanensis DSM 45655T. The genotypic and phenotypic data showed that strain AH97T represents a novel species of the genus Actinoalloteichus, for which the name Actinoalloteichus hoggarensis sp. nov. is proposed, with AH97T ( = DSM 45943T = CECT 8639T) as the type strain.

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped, yellow-pigment-producing bacterium, (designated strain CC-CZW004T), was isolated from seafood samples (sea urchins) at Penghu Island in Taiwan. Strain CC-CZW004T grew optimally at pH 7.0 and 30 °C in the presence of 3 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes revealed a distinct taxonomic position attained by strain CC-CZW004T with respect to other members of the genus Nocardioides. The novel strain shared highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Nocardioides daejeonensis JCM 16922T (96.4 %), Nocardioides pacificus JCM 19260T (96.3 %), and Marmoricola scoriae JCM 17444T (96.2 %). The major fatty acids of strain CC-CZW004T consisted of C17:0, C16:1ω5c, C17:1ω8c`, iso-C16:0 and C19:1ω11c/C19:1ω9c (summed feature 6). The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell wall was ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipid profile was composed of major amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and aminophospholipid. The DNA G+C content was 73.3 mol%. The predominant quinone system was menaquinone (MK-8). On the basis of polyphasic taxonomic evidences presented here, strain CC-CZW004T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides echinoideorum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-CZW004T ( = BCRC 16974T = JCM 30276T).

We report the first detection of Nocardiopsis composta in association with osteomyelitis in a young male miniature Australian shepherd dog. Findings included suppurative osteomyelitis containing intralesional Fite's acid fast bacilli, aerobic culture of branching Gram-positive rods, and positive identification via phenotypic analysis and 16S rDNA sequencing.

A Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, catalase- and oxidase-positive rod, designated CCNWSP60(T), was isolated from the nodule surface of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] cultivar Zhonghuang 13. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis clearly showed that the isolate belonged to the genus Microbacterium . On the basis of pairwise comparisons of 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain CCNWSP60(T) was most closely related to Microbacterium murale DSM 22178(T) (98.8% similarity), Microbacterium aerolatum DSM 14217(T) (98.3%), Microbacterium ginsengiterrae DSM 24823(T) (98.0%) and Microbacterium profundi DSM 22239(T) (97.8%). However, the DNA-DNA relatedness values of strain CCNWSP60(T) to M. murale DSM 22178(T), M. aerolatum DSM 14217(T), M. ginsengiterrae DSM 24823(T) and M. profundi DSM 22239(T) were 48%, 43%, 28% and 41%, respectively. Growth of strain CCNWSP60(T) occurred at 4-40 °C and at pH 5.0-9.0. The NaCl range for growth was 0-4% (w/v). The predominant menaquinone of strain CCNWSP60(T) was MK-13; MK-12 was also detected. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified glycolipid and one unidentified phospholipid. The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan was ornithine. The acyl type of the peptidoglycan was glycolyl. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content of the type strain was 67.4 mol%. As the physiological and biochemical characteristics as well as the DNA-DNA relatedness between strain CCNWSP60(T) and the type strains of its closest phylogenetic neighbours showed clear differences, a novel species Microbacterium shaanxiense is proposed to accommodate it. A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-B-8(T), was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of a peace lily (Spathi phyllum Kochii) collected from Heilongjiang province, north-east China. Key morphological and physiological characteristics as well as chemotaxonomic features of strain NEAU-B-8(T) were congruent with the description of the genus Actinomycetospora , such as the major fatty acids, the whole-cell hydrolysates, the predominant menaquinone and the phospholipid profile. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain NEAU-B-8(T) shared the highest sequence similarities with Actinomycetospora lutea JCM 17982(T) (99.3% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Actinomycetospora chlora TT07I-57(T) (98.4 %), Actinomycetospora straminea IY07-55(T) (98.3%) and Actinomycetospora chibensis TT04-21(T) (98.2%); similarities to type strains of other species of this genus were lower than 98%. The phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain NEAU-B-8(T) formed a distinct branch with A. lutea JCM 17982(T) that was supported by a high bootstrap value of 97% in the neighbour-joining tree and was also recovered with the maximum-likelihood algorithm. However, the DNA-DNA relatedness between strain NEAU-B-8(T) and A. lutea JCM 17982(T) was found to be 50.6 ± 1.2%. Meanwhile, strain NEAU-B-8(T) differs from other most closely related strains in phenotypic properties, such as maximum NaCl tolerance, hydrolysis of aesculin and decomposition of urea. On the basis of the morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA hybridization data, we conclude that strain NEAU-B-8(T) represents a novel species of the genus Actinomycetospora , named Actinomycetospora rhizophila sp. nov. The traditional fermentation of Shanxi aged vinegar (SAV), a well-known traditional Chinese vinegar, generally involves the preparation of starter daqu, starch saccharification, alcoholic fermentation (AF) and acetic acid fermentation (AAF). Dynamics and diversity of microbial community succession in daqu and other fermentation stages were investigated by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Results showed that eight bacterial genera and four fungal genera were found in daqu. However, Staphylococcus, Saccharopolyspora, Bacillus, Oceanobacillus, Enterobacter, Streptomyces, Eurotium, Monascus and Pichia in daqu were eradicated during AF. Four bacterial genera and three fungal genera were found in this stage. Weissella, Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Saccharomyces, and Saccharomycopsis were the dominant microorganisms in the late stage of AF. During AAF, four bacterial genera and four fungal genera were found. Weissella, Streptococcus, Klebsiella, Escherichia, and Cladosporium gradually disappeared; the dominant microorganisms were Acetobacter, Lactobacillus, Saccharomycopsis, and Alternaria in the late stage of AAF. Alpha diversity metrics showed that fungal diversity in daqu was greater than that in AF and AAF. By contrast, bacterial diversity decreased from daqu to AF and increased in the first three days of AAF and then decreased. An actinobacterium, designated strain DLS-70(T), was isolated from a soil sample from the surface of a rock on the peak of Darangshi Oreum (a volcanic cone) in Jeju, Republic of Korea. Substrate mycelium was produced abundantly on most of the media tested. Spiral chains of spores with warty surface developed on the aerial hyphae. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DLS-70(T) belonged to the genus Actinomadura and was most closely related to Actinomadura bangladeshensis DSM 45347(T) (98.9% sequence similarity), Actinomadura madurae DSM 43067(T) (98.8%) and Actinomadura chokoriensis DSM 45346(T) (98.6%). Chemotaxonomic observations supported the assignment of the isolate to the genus Actinomadura . DNA-DNA relatedness values between strain DLS-70(T) and the type strains of the closest phylogenetic relatives were less than 20%. On the basis of data from this polyphasic study, strain DLS-70(T) ( =KCTC 29224(T) =DSM 45941(T)) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Actinomadura , for which the name Actinomadura darangshiensis sp. nov. is proposed., (© 2015 IUMS.)

Chemical investigation of the actinobacterial isolate Pseudonocardia endophytica VUK-10 has led to the segregation of two known bioactive compounds, namely 4-(2-acetamidoethyl) phenyl acetate and 4-((1, 4-dioxooctahydropyrrolo [1, 2-a] pyrazin-3-yl) methyl) phenyl acetate. The strain was isolated from a sediment sample of the Nizampatnam mangrove ecosystem, south coastal Andhra Pradesh, India. The chemical structure of the active compounds was established on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, including (1)H NMR and (13)C NMR spectroscopies, FTIR, and EIMS. The antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of the bioactive compounds produced by the strain were tested against opportunistic and pathogenic bacteria and fungi and on MDA-MB-231, OAW, HeLa, and MCF-7 cell lines. The compounds exhibited antimicrobial activities against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi and also showed potent cytotoxic activity against MDA-MB-231, OAW, HeLa, and MCF-7 cell lines. This is the first example for this class of bioactive compounds isolated from Pseudonocardia of mangrove origin.

A novel actinomycete strain, designated TRM 45387(T), was isolated from a saline-alkali soil in Xinjiang Province (40° 22' N 79° 08' E), north-west China. The isolate was characterized using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain TRM 45387(T) belonged to the genus Glycomyces and was closely related to Glycomyces arizonensis DSM 44726(T) (96.59% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The G+C content of the DNA was 71.26 mol%. The isolate contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, and xylose, glucose, galactose, arabinose and ribose as the major whole-cell sugars. The diagnostic phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositolmannosides. The predominant menaquinone was MK-10(H6). The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, a novel species, Glycomyces tarimensis sp. nov., is proposed. Five non-spore-forming, aerobic and Gram-stain-positive bacterial strains, 10-107-8(T), 1C-4, NHI3&#95;6, 4107&#95;1&#95;2, and 3D-3, were isolated from Populus × euramericana bark collected in Puyang City, Henan Province, PR China. The isolates grew at 15-40 °C and pH 5-10. The optimum temperature and pH for growth were 30 °C and pH 8.0, respectively. Chemotaxonomic features included MK-10 and MK-11 as major menaquinones (type strain); predominating iso- and anteiso-branched cellular fatty acids; diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol as major polar lipids (type strain); ornithine as the principal diamino acid of the cell-wall peptidoglycan (type strain); glycolyl type as cell-wall acyl type; and DNA G+C content of 66.8-67.6 mol%. These features were consistent with classification in the genus Microbacterium . Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence data indicated that the five isolates belonged to the genus Microbacterium and were closely related to Microbacterium halotolerans . A high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.97% to M. halotolerans YIM 70130(T) was observed. The five isolates showed less than 96.20% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the other species of the genus Microbacterium with validly published names. DNA-DNA relatedness of the five isolates with M. halotolerans JCM 13013(T) ranged from 35.62% to 44.36%. Considering the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and the physiological and biochemical characteristics, we propose that the five strains should be assigned to a novel species of the genus Microbacterium .
