Background Fungal brain abscess is an uncommon disease, mostly associated with immunocompromised states and poorly controlled diabetes. Its incidence, however, is rising as a result of the increasing use of immunosuppressive agents, corticosteroids and broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy. Candida species have emerged as the most prevalent etiologic agents of brain abscesses in autopsy studies. Case presentation A 46-year-old male with a history of injection drug abuse, chronic hepatitis C and diabetes mellitus presented to the Emergency Department of our hospital following a generalized tonic-clonic seizure without recovery of mental status. On admission, the patient was in coma, febrile, with severe acidemia with respiratory and metabolic acidosis, requiring invasive mechanical ventilation. Brain imaging revealed multiple ring-enhancing lesions with oedema and mass effect. Microbiologic studies, including cerebrospinal fluid, blood, sputum and urine cultures, were all negative. A stereotactic brain biopsy was performed and culture of brain specimens revealed Candida albicans. The patient was successfully treated with fluconazole therapy for 48 weeks presenting a good clinical response and a complete radiological resolution of brain abscesses. Conclusion Despite advances in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, fungal brain abscess remains a life-threatening disease with a poor outcome. Successful treatment requires an early diagnosis and usually a combined medical and surgical approach. A long-term antibiotic regimen is a cornerstone of fungal brain abscesses treatment, with the endpoint determined by clinical and neuroimaging response. The authors report an uncommon case of successfully treated Candida albicans brain abscesses with anti-fungal therapy consisting of fluconazole alone. This case illustrates the importance of early recognition of predisposing factors and multidisciplinary approach in timely therapeutic intervention, in order to prevent neurologic sequelae and improve the outcome of the patients with this severe and challenging form of central nervous system infection.

The possibility to desensitize or induce a state of unresponsiveness to a drug that previously caused a hypersensitivity reaction is crucial when no equally safe or efficacious therapeutic alternative exists. The authors report the case of a successful desensitization to ganciclovir.

This master’s project addresses the valuation of Hilton Worldwide Holdings, and its primary purpose is to set the target share price for the end of the year 2020. In addition, it aims to provide investors with an investment recommendation based on the difference between the actual close price and the target share price obtained during this valuation exercise. Over the last century, with a worldwide presence, Hilton has become a highly recognized and respected name in the hospitality industry. In 2020 the company faced a massive challenge, initially due to the temporary suspension of most businesses with the several lockdowns, and then with the readaptation to what the future will entail. At this moment, Hilton is in charge of the difficult task of recovering in a world full of uncertainties. To accomplish this valuation exercise we applied a model of the Discounted Cash Flow approach, the Free Cash Flow to the Firm, followed by a Relative Valuation using multiples. To obtain the target share price were assumed several assumptions based on the company's recent performance and macroeconomic projections. The outputs provided across both models suggest that Hilton’s shares, as of 31 December 2020, were under their fair value and therefore, we issued a BUY recommendation. Este projeto de mestrado consiste na avaliação da Hilton Worldwide Holdings e o seu principal propósito é definir o preço-alvo das ações para o final do ano de 2020. Além disso, visa fornecer aos investidores uma recomendação de investimento baseada na diferença entre o preço de fecho verificado e o preço-alvo da ação obtido durante este exercício de avaliação. Ao longo do último século, estando presente em todo o mundo, a Hilton tornou-se um nome altamente reconhecido e respeitado na indústria da hospitalidade. Em 2020 a empresa enfrentou um grande desafio, inicialmente devido à suspensão temporária da maioria dos negócios com os vários confinamentos, e depois com a readaptação ao que o futuro implicará. Neste momento, a Hilton está a cargo da difícil tarefa de se recuperar num mundo cheio de incertezas. De forma a realizarmos este exercício de avaliação aplicámos um modelo da abordagem de Fluxos de Caixa Descontados, o Free Cash Flow to the Firm, seguido de uma Avaliação Relativa usando múltiplos. Para a obtenção do preço-alvo das ações foram assumidos diversos pressupostos com base no desempenho recente da empresa e de projeções macroeconómicas. Os resultados obtidos por ambos os modelos sugerem que as ações da Hilton, a 31 de dezembro de 2020, estavam abaixo do seu valor justo e, portanto, emitimos uma recomendação de COMPRA.

The integrated Oil and Gas (O&G) industry is one of the most valuable industries in the world and has, over the years, been subject to great fluctuations in the market although visibly correlated to the overall GDP evolution. Members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) are responsible for ca. 44% of the worldwide oil production and detain control over 81.5% of the world’s proved oil reserves – This means that the countries can easily manipulate the O&G prices by agreeing to cut down or accelerate production. Saudi Aramco is the Saudi Arabian national oil company and not only is the world’s leading oil supplier but it is also the most profitable and has access to one of the largest proven oil and gas reserves that secure production for at least 52 years being therefore the leader of OPEC. At the end of 2019, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has decided to list 1.5% of Aramco’s shares in the local stock exchange which turned into the largest IPO ever. This equity research aimed to evaluate the company using different valuation methods and compare the results with the initial share price offered in the IPO (USD 8.53). The results obtained in the valuation of the company point out towards an overpriced scenario which did not impact the success of the IPO likely due to the limited investment opportunities from Saudi Arabia but also the company’s very solid profile. A indústria do Petróleo e Gás é uma das mais valiosas do mundo e tem, ao longo dos anos, sido alvo de uma grande variação de preços no mercado apesar de visivelmente correlacionada com o Produto Interno Bruto. Os membros da Organização dos Países Exportadores de Petróleo (OPEP) são responsáveis por 44% da produção mundial de petróleo e detém 81.5% das reservas de petróleo provadas – Isto significa que a Organização pode manipular os preços de mercado ao acordar entre si um corte ou uma aceleração da produção. A Saudi Aramco é a empresa nacional de petróleo da Arábia Saudita e líder da OPEP, não só por ser a maior fornecedora de petróleo do mundo, mas também por ser a empresa mais rentável e que tem acesso a uma das maiores reservas de petróleo, suficiente para assegurar produção por pelo menos 52 anos. Em 2019, o governo da Arábia Saudita decidiu vender 1.5% das ações da empresa na bolsa de valores local que se tornou na maior Oferta Pública Inicial (OPI) de sempre. Este projeto pretendeu analisar o valor da empresa através de diferentes métodos de avaliação e comparar os mesmos com o valor inicial da ação oferecido na OPI (USD 8.53). Os resultados da avaliação realizada apontam para uma sobreavaliação da ação, o que não impediu o sucesso da OPI, provavelmente devido às oportunidades de investimento limitadas no país mas também devido ao perfil muito sólido da empresa.

The main purpose of this project is to conclude which valuation model is more appropriate to value Bank Millennium so that it can be used in the future to decide whether invest or not in the bank. To conclude about which model is more appropriate to value the bank, the difference between the theoretical and market value is computed: the smallest the difference, the more appropriate the model is. The valuation approaches to be used are FCFE, Residual Income (RI), Bond Pricing and Relative Valuation. It can be concluded that the most appropriate model to value Bank Millennium is Relative Valuation considering a combination of 2-year forward-looking PBV and PS ratios. Following this model, it can be concluded that Bank Millennium’ shares at the end of the year 2020 were slightly undervalued. The disregard of ESG issues, the assumptions made and the normal market trading may explain the differences obtained between theoretical and market share. To proceed with the Bank Millennium valuation, the data needed are 2018 up to 2020 Consolidated Financial Statements and Annual Report. To run the DCF valuation, the starting point is the estimation of the next 5 years cash flows, considering several assumptions. To get the final value of the bank, it is needed to estimate the appropriate cost of capital (using CAPM) and then discount the cash flows to get the present value. To pursue Relative Valuation it is needed to decide the peer group and obtain information to compute the multiples. O principal objetivo deste projeto é concluir qual é o modelo de avaliação mais adequado para avaliar adequadamente o Bank Millennium, de forma a que esse modelo possa ser utilizado no futuro para investidores decidirem se investem ou não no banco. Para concluir sobre qual é o modelo mais apropriado para avaliar o banco, analisa-se a diferença entre o valor teórico e de mercado: quanto menor a diferença, melhor é o modelo. Os modelos de avaliação a serem utilizadas são FCFE, Residual Income (RI), Bond Pricing e Avaliação Relativa. Conclui-se que o modelo mais apropriado para avaliar o Bank Millennium é a Avaliação Relativa considerando uma combinação dos rácios PBV e PS previstos dos próximos 2 anos. Seguindo este modelo, concluí-se que as ações do Bank Millennium no final do ano de 2020 estão ligeiramente subvalorizadas. A desconsideração de questões ESG, os pressupostos assumidos e a negociação normal no mercado podem explicar as diferenças obtidas entre o valor teórico e de mercado de cada ação. Para proceder à avaliação do Bank Millennium, os dados necessários são as Demonstrações Financeiras e o Relatório de Contas consolidadas de 2018 a 2020. O ponto de partida é a estimativa dos cash flows dos próximos 5 anos, considerando vários pressupostos. Para obter o valor final do banco, é necessário estimar o custo de capital adequado (usando o CAPM) e descontar os cash flows para obter o valor atual. Para seguir a Avaliação Relativa é necessário escolher os pares, recolher informação e calcular os múltiplos.

This report was developed with the main objective of estimating the fair value for The Navigator Company’s shares of as of 31 December 2019 and determine if the company was being under or overvalued by the market, through a comparison with the actual share close price at that time. Navigator is a Portuguese company with over 70 years of activity and an international benchmark in the Pulp & Paper industry for its products of excellence. The valuation was carried using two methodologies from the vast available selection: the Discounted Cash Flows approach and the Relative Valuation. The assumptions made are supported by analysis to the company’s historical performance and to the macroeconomic and market environment. The results obtained across both methodologies suggest that, as of 31 December 2019, Navigator’s shares were priced above its fair value. Este relatório foi desenvolvido com o objetivo principal de estimar o justo valor das ações da The Navigator Company a 31 de dezembro de 2019 e determinar se a empresa se encontrava sub ou sobrevalorizada pelo mercado, através da comparação com o preço de fecho real da ação nessa data. A Navigator é uma empresa portuguesa com mais de 70 anos de atividade e uma referência internacional na indústria da pasta e papel pelos seus produtos de excelência. A avaliação foi realizada utilizando duas metodologias de entre a vasta seleção disponível: a abordagem de Fluxos de Caixa Descontados e a Avaliação dos Múltiplos. Os pressupostos efetuados são fundamentados por análises ao desempenho histórico da empresa, bem como ao contexto macroeconómico e da indústria. Os resultados obtidos em ambas as metodologias sugerem que, em 31 de dezembro de 2019, as ações da Navigator estavam cotadas acima do seu justo valor.

The personal luxury goods market has been growing over the past 20 years, presenting an annual growth rate of 6%, being that in 2017 it registered a value over 300 billion of dollars. The regions of America and Europe are the main geographical market segments, representing 65% of the personal luxury goods market, even though the Asian region has shown a big growth over the last years, due to its economic development. The online segment has been increasing, driven by the strong and fast technological development, being that this segment represents 9% of the market and it registered a growth rate of 24% in 2017. The fast growth observed in the online segment is also due to the generational shift that is occurring over the last years, since the consumers of the generations Y and Z are increasing. Therefore, Farfetch is taking advantage of the opportunities that the market provides, to its development and growth, and it became a listed company on the North American stock exchange NASDAQ. This project aims to valuate the company upon its listing on the stock market, where it will be valued the price per share through different valuation model, and the values obtained will be compared between them and with Farfetch’s IPO price. Taking into consideration the results, it was concluded that the IPO price of 20 dollars per share, falls short from the values obtained through the DCF models, so it is suggested to buy the shares of the IPO. O mercado da moda de luxo tem vindo a crescer nos últimos 20 anos, apresentando uma taxa de crescimento anual de 6%, sendo que em 2017 registou um valor superior a 300 mil milhões de dólares. Os continentes americano e europeu são, do ponto de vista geográfico, os principais mercados, representado 65%, ainda que o mercado asiático tenha demonstrado um forte crescimento nos últimos anos, devido ao seu desenvolvimento económico. Em relação aos canais de distribuição, o segmento online do mercado da moda, tem vindo a crescer, impulsionado pelo forte e rápido desenvolvimento tecnológico, sendo que representa 9% do valor total e registou um crescimento anual de 24% de 2016 para 2017. O forte crescimento deste segmento deve-se à mudança geracional que se tem vindo a assistir nos últimos anos, sendo que têm vindo a crescer o número de consumidores da geração Y e Z. Assim sendo, a Farfetch vai aproveitando as oportunidades que este mercado proporciona, para o seu desenvolvimento e crescimento, tendo-se tornado uma empresa cotada na bolsa norte americana NASDAQ. Este projeto visa a avaliação da empresa aquando da sua entrada em bolsa, onde irá ser avaliado o preço por ação através de diferentes modelos e os valores obtidos serão comparados entre eles e com o preço da OPI da Farfetch. Considerando os resultados obtidos, concluiu-se que o valor da OPI de 20 dólares por ação, fica aquém dos valores obtidos pelos modelos de DCF, sendo assim é recomendado a compra das ações ao preço da OPI.

This project is inserted in the Master in Management, having as its purpose the presentation of a business plan, as well as its implementation through an existing company. In an increasingly digital world, in which we spend most of our time connected, business opportunities emerge ready to face the needs of this progressively dematerialized and computerized world. In this context, the main objective of this business plan is to analyse the economic and financial feasibility of a digital platform under the e-marketplace category, aimed to facilitate the gathering and commercial relationship between consumers and service providers, based on a business model sustained by a subscription fee charged to service providers.

The aim of this research is to evaluate the “CEO dominance risk” in the Healthcare sector in Portugal among the institutions belonging to the state – the state-owned enterprises (SOEs). There is no abundant research on Corporate Governance (CG) related to SOEs. One of the reasons is that usually there are very few SOEs by industry, sometimes even just one (v.g. PostOffice, Railroad). To study these entities between several countries, one has to isolate the regulatory, legal, cultural and general business environment factors that are peculiar to each situation. In the Healthcare sector, each country despite being more or less social concerned, will always have a considerable number of public Hospitals. Due to the impact of New Public Management theories that spread all over the world, some of the public Hospitals transformed into corporation form, constituting SOEs. Hospital management has been considered a very complex one due to the clashes between professional values and culture and the hard realities of economic performance and cash constraints. In this environment, clinical professionals may become managers thus constituting a hybrid executive balancing these conflicting demands and not having the formal authority of a typical command and control organization. Previous researchers found that the average performance of firms is not affected by CEO dominance – the possibility to exercise their will despite or removing dissenting. However, they noted that the range of performance was wider when CEO dominance was present. Excellent and poor results would occur more often. In the public sector dominated by the balance of procedures and outcomes, there is a tendency to risk avoidance, thus considering CEO dominance a risk. This research was based in previous models and questionnaires, but adapted to the particular conditions of SOEs and legal framework in Portugal during the analysis period (2011-2015). A practical power index model was developed, and the results demonstrated that some Hospital CEO´s may have a dominant position but also exposes some underpowered situations. Regarding the motivation for Physicians to become CEOs and how they are perceived by their peers, the research confirmed the five groups expected and highlighted that on one side the most senior professionals are supported by their peers, and the younger ones are regarded as not having the required expertise. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a existência de “risco de dominância do CEO” (PCA) no setor público empresarial da saúde em Portugal. A investigação científica sobre a Governança Corporativa relacionada com o setor público empresarial não é abundante. Uma das razões deve-se a que normalmente existem poucas empresas públicas por setor de atividade, frequentemente apenas uma (v.g. Correios, Caminhosde-ferro). Para estudar estas entidades em vários países, há que isolar os aspetos regulatórios, legais, culturais e o ambiente de negócios em geral, que são peculiares a cada situação. No setor da Saúde pelo contrário, cada país, tenha maiores ou menores preocupações sociais, possui sempre um conjunto considerável de Hospitais públicos. Um dos impactes das teorias do New Public Management que se espalharam em todo o mundo, foi o da transformação de alguns destes Hospitais em estruturas empresariais, constituindo um setor público empresarial da saúde. A gestão de um hospital tem sido considerada uma das mais complexas devido ao confronto entre os valores e cultura dos profissionais clínicos e as duras realidades dos resultados económicos ou das restrições de tesouraria. Neste ambiente os profissionais clínicos poderão assumir papéis de gestores, tornando-se executivos híbridos que têm de balancear solicitações conflituantes e não têm a autoridade formal típica das organizações reguladas por comando e controlo. Estudos anteriores demonstraram que a média dos resultados das empresas não era afetada pela dominância do CEO – a possibilidade de exercer a sua vontade apesar de ou removendo as opiniões contrárias. Contudo, esses estudos assinalaram que a dispersão dos valores era maior quando em presença de dominância do CEO. Resultados excelentes ou muito fracos ocorriam frequentemente. Como o setor público é dominado pelo equilíbrio entre o procedimento e o resultado, existe uma tendência para evitar riscos, donde podemos considerar que no setor público dominância do CEO é um risco. Este estudo foi baseado em modelos e questionários anteriormente utilizados por investigadores internacionais, mas adaptados às condições do setor público e restrições legais em Portugal durante o período de análise (2011-2015). Um modelo prático de índice de poder foi desenvolvido e os resultados demonstram que em alguns hospitais existe o risco de dominância do CEO, mas também evidenciaram situações de falta de poder dos mesmos. Em relação às motivações dos Médicos para exercerem o cargo de CEO e como são avaliados pelos seus pares, este estudo confirmou os cinco grupos esperados, realçando que os mais seniores têm o apoio dos seus pares e que os mais jovens são percecionados como não tendo a necessária competência

Os serviços postais têm registado uma tendência negativa na Europa e em Portugal devido à substituição latente do correio físico por meios de comunicação eletrónica. Por outro lado, apesar da diminuição do volume no setor do expresso e encomendas, este é considerado uma das principais fontes de potencial crescimento devido à proliferação do e-commerce. Em 2013, em resultado de determinadas ações impostas pela Comissão Europeia, pelo Banco Central Europeu e pelo Fundo Monetário Internacional, o Estado Português foi obrigado a privatizar um largo conjunto de ativos por si , onde se incluíam os CTT. Neste contexto, e no quadro da privatização dos , CTT a solução definida para esta Empresa foi a de fazer uma Oferta Pública Inicial onde a empresa passaria a estar cotada no mercado bolsista Português (EURONEXT Lisboa). O presente projeto visa, analisar e definir o intervalo de preço de ação que deveria ser apresentado aos investidores e, posteriormente, avaliar se o preço da ação oferecido é abaixo do preço justo, como defendido pela literatura. A análise do caso CTT baseia-se numa metodologia assente na valorização do negócio através da análise dos fluxos de caixa descontados e através de uma análise de empresas e transações comparáveis no setor. No caso vertente, atingiu-se um intervalo de preço [€4.5;€7.9] que compara com o intervalo definido pela Empresa e pelos seus assessores financeiros [€4.1;€5.5]. Tendo em conta os resultados obtidos e posterior evolução do preço no mercado, há evidência de que o fenómeno da subavaliação do preço da ação dos CTT verificou-se. The shipping and mailing services have registered a negative trend in Europe and in Portugal due to a latent substitution of the physical mail for electronic communication channels. On the other hand, besides the volumes decrease on the express and parcels sector, this is considered one of the main sources of potential growth due to e-commerce proliferation. In 2013, as a result of several measures imposed by the European Commission, the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the Portuguese Government was obligated to privatize a set of assets held by itself, where CTT was included. In this context, and in CTT’s privatization scenario, the solution defined for this Company was to make an Initial Public Offering (IPO) where the Company would become publicly traded in the Portuguese stock market (EURONEXT Lisbon). The present project intends to analyse and establish analyse and define the range price that should be offered to investors and, subsequently, assess if the share price offered is below the fair price, as argued by several literature The analysis of CTT’s case is based a methodology of establishing the Company’s operation value throughout a discounted cash flow approach and by an analysis of comparable firms and past transactions in the sector. In the present case, there was reached a range price of [€4.5;€7.9] which compares with the range price settled by the Company and its financial advisers [€4.1;€5.5]. With the results obtained and the subsequent stock price evolution on the market, there are evidences that the IPO underpricing phenomenon of CTT’s stock price has occurred.

This dissertation is conducted to extent the research on independent German Venture Capital Firms’ investment strategies. It analyzes the regional and industry specific factors that influence the VCF’s diversification and specialization strategies along the geographic and industry dimension. A survey determining the investment focus and rating the relevance of each factor was administered to analyze the underlying patterns. An assessment of data on factor ratings and portfolio strategies discloses that internal factors, including: track record and expertise within the industry are more relevant to VCFs specializing on a particular industry than external factors that comprise industry specific market factors. In correspondence, the external factors receive higher relevance from VCFs following an industry diversification strategy. However, there is no statistical evidence that VCFs specialize on a particular industry because of the team’s level of expertise within the industry. Further, the analysis presents that diversified VCFs assign higher significance to industry specific risk. The dissertation concludes that they diversify across industries to mitigate idiosyncratic risk associated with a single industry, which supports modern portfolio theory. Another finding depicts that VCFs specialize on a particular region because of differences in legal and regulatory frameworks across countries. This dissertation constructs a framework for the most relevant factors that are influencing VCF’s investment strategies and resulting portfolio selections O presente trabalho tem como objectivo ampliar a investigação sobre as estratégias de investimento de fundos de capital de risco alemães. Analisa os factores sectoriais e regionais específicos que influenciam a diversificação e especialização das estratégias de VCFs, ao longo dessas dimensões geográficas e de sector. Com esse intuito, foi aplicado um inquérito para determinar o foco de investimento e classificar a relevância de cada factor, analisando assim os seus padrões subjacentes. Uma avaliação dos dados sobre a relevância dos factores e estratégia do portfólio evidencia que as variáveis internas, incluindo: experiência histórica e conhecimento sobre um sector são mais relevantes para os VCFs especializados num sector em particular do que as condições externas que abranjam factores de mercado específicos dos sectores. Por sua vez, as variáveis externas recebem maior relevância dos VCFs que prosseguem uma estratégica de diversificação de sectores. No entanto, não foi encontrada nenhuma evidência estatística que os VCFs especializem-se num sector em particular devido ao nível de conhecimento da sua equipa nesse sector. Inclusive, a análise verifica que VCFs com uma estratégia diversificada atribuem maior importância aos riscos específicos dos sectores. O estudo conclui que o investimento é diversificado em vários sectores de forma a mitigar os riscos idiossincráticos associados a um sector específico, o que corrobora a teoria moderna do portfólio. Outra conclusão demonstra que os VCF’s especializam-se numa determinada região devido a diferenças nos quadros legislativos e regulatórios entre países. Esta dissertação propõe uma framework para os factores mais relevantes que influenciam as estratégias de investimento dos VCF’s e a sua consequente selecção de portfólio.

This research aims to states the funding to which the start-ups in France can claim in 2015. Through a field study in which I created my innovative company, this paper makes an inventory of different financing methods depending on the company’s stage of maturity Personal savings, love money, bank loans, business angels, each of these funds cannot be requested at the same time. The riskiness of the start-up activities determines the type of funding to continue their development. Through the creation of Orbiteo, an online reputation management company, we will see how it can be possible for a start-up to combine funds for its development.

Este estudo apresenta uma análise das dimensões críticas da governance e da gestão das Business Schools, com enfoque nas instituições portuguesas, destacando as questões da sua organização e funcionamento bem assim como a sua articulação com o mercado em que atua, o mundo empresarial. Apesar da existência de inúmeros estudos sobre a contextualização e evolução do ensino superior em geral (de carácter nacional ou mesmo supranacional), a realidade específica das Business Schools tem sido relativamente pouco estudada. A exceção ocorre em estudos que analisam criticamente o papel ético das Business Schools quando ocorrem escândalos e fraudes envolvendo alumni de instituições prestigiadas. Este trabalho de investigação pretende, deste modo, contribuir para um melhor conhecimento da organização e problemas que as Business Schools enfrentam e os desafios que lhes são colocados pela permanente mudança em contexto de globalização. Em termos de enquadramento conceptual, este estudo baseia-se nas noções de governance, autonomia universitária e seu entrelaçamento. Um fator fundamental que condiciona os restantes elementos deste sistema estruturado é a autonomia financeira e suas consequências em termos de captação de financiamento extragovernamental. Deste depende em boa medida a capacidade de modernização das Business Schools e das instituições universitárias onde elas se inserem. O Processo de Bolonha e a correspondente estruturação do ensino superior em três ciclos, as acreditações de programas e o posicionamento nos rankings, são fatores igualmente fundamentais para a sobrevivência e o sucesso das instituições. Assim, após uma contextualização e discussão dos conceitos utilizados neste estudo, com especial destaque para o seu enquadramento na literatura sobre o ensino superior, este trabalho apresenta uma análise empírica da evolução do ensino superior em Portugal, nos últimos 50 anos, e um estudo sobre as dimensões destacadas pelos stakeholders das Business Schools, do lado da oferta (diretores) e da procura (alunos). Os resultados indicam claramente que os dirigentes das Business Schools destacam a autonomia e o perfil dos diretores como fatores imprescindíveis ao sucesso das suas instituições. Por outro lado, os alunos valorizam a imagem da instituição e do programa que frequentam ou frequentaram e a possibilidade de networking, como fatores indispensáveis ao sucesso nas suas carreiras profissionais. A recentragem do tema da autonomia financeira enquanto fundamento da dimensão do desenvolvimento das Business Schools continua, assim, uma questão atual. This study analyses the critical dimensions of the governance and management of the Business Schools, focusing on Portuguese universities. The study highlights the issues of organization and management as well as their links with the underlying market: the enterprise world. While many studies deal with the context and development of higher education in general, the reality of the Business Schools in particular has received relatively little attention. The exception is related with those studies that analyze critically the ethic role of the Business Schools when scandals and frauds occur involving alumni of some prestigious institutions. Hence, this research work aims to provide a contribution to the knowledge of the organization and difficulties faced by the Business Schools, as well as the challenges posed by the permanent changes in a context of globalization. The theoretical framework of this study is based on the notions of governance, university autonomy and their interrelationship. Governance and independence are decisively reliant on financial autonomy and its consequences in terms of gathering extra-governmental financing. Private and self-funding are crucial for the development and modernization of the Business Schools, as well as their nesting universities. Likewise, the Bologna Agreement and the underlying restructuring of higher education in a tertiary system, the process of programme/institution accreditation and the ranking network are also major elements for the survival and success of the institutions. After the discussion of the main concepts used in this study, with a special focus on their insertion in the higher education literature, this research deals with an empirical analysis of the progress of higher education in Portugal over the last five decades. It also studies the main dimensions underlined by stakeholders of the Business Schools from the supply side (directors) and from the demand side (students). The results show that the Business School directors (in charge or not) select institutions autonomy and leadership skills as foremost features of their achievement. On the other hand, the students and alumni appraise the institutions image and the prestige of the attended programme, as well as the networking potential, as major features for the success of their professional careers. Therefore, the refocusing of the theme of financial autonomy as a foundation for the development facet of the Business Schools continues an update question.

JEL Classification System: • M10 – General Business Administration Tourism has become one of the most significant industries in the whole world, being in continuous change, either due the appearance of new types of offer, but also due the changes on the demand side, both influenced by the globalization and the internet, which increased the number of tourist and changed their motivations and behaviors. This way, and in order to compete and grow in this industry, it is crucial to define a suitable strategy. This applied project is based on the creation of a centrally located three-star hotel in the city of Lisbon – Lisbon Journey Hotel – through the rehabilitation of an existing building in Avenida da Liberdade. The main goal of the hotel is to offer a good Bed & Breakfast service at a very competitive price, aiming, primarily, to reach people who travel for professional reasons, but also the city-breakers. Regarding to Food and Beverage services, the Hotel will not have any Bar or Restaurant available. A competitive pricing will be based on a strategy of cost leadership through the optimization of operations and processes. The business plan presents firstly an environmental and market analysis, highlighting Lisbon’s current hospitality industry and competition. After that, it defines the Hotel’s target and positioning, as well as the strategy to pursue. Finally, it identifies the resources and investments required to implement and exploit the Hotel, followed by an economic and financial analysis that evaluate and support the project. O turismo tornou-se num dos setores de atividade mais importantes de todo o mundo, estando em constante mudança, quer pelo aparecimento de novos tipos de oferta, mas também pelas mudanças verificadas ao nível da procura. Ambas as vertentes são influenciadas pela globalização e pela utilização da internet, que têm conduzido a um aumento do número de turistas e a uma mudança nas suas motivações e comportamentos. Desta forma, para competir e crescer nesta indústria é fundamental definir uma estratégia adequada. O projeto aplicado baseia-se na criação de um hotel de três estrelas, localizado no centro da cidade de Lisboa – Lisbon Journey Hotel – através da reabilitação de um prédio existente na Avenida da Liberdade. O objetivo do hotel é prestar um bom serviço de Aposento e Pequeno-almoço a um preço bastante competitivo, visando alcançar, primeiramente, turistas que viajam por motivos profissionais, mas também os citybreakers. Relativamente ao serviço de Alimentação e Bebidas, o Hotel não contará nem com Bar nem com Restaurante. A competitividade pelo preço será baseada numa estratégia de liderança nos custos, através da otimização das operações e processos. O plano de negócios apresenta, primeiramente, uma análise do meio ambiente e do mercado, focando o setor hoteleiro e a concorrência atual de Lisboa. É também definido o público-alvo e o posicionamento do hotel, tal como a estratégia a seguir. Por fim, são identificados os recursos e os investimentos necessários à implementação e exploração do hotel, seguidos por uma análise económica e financeira, que avalia e suporta o projeto.

O devir dos padrões sociais e das famílias com permanente vínculo aos animais de estimação, esta a ampliar na cultura de consumo a indústria dos produtos pet’ e consequente I&D destes. A presente monografia pretende aferir na domesticação do cão e/ou gato (AE), a realidade concreta nas estruturas familiares urbanas, hábitos sanitários dos AE e saúde pública. Identificar fatores caracterizadores de sensibilidade. Sugerir uma plataforma de união com o bem-estar, nos direitos, deveres, com obrigações reguladas pela legislação, na coabitação de humanos com AE. Constata-se o desenvolvimento de esforços comerciais, legislativos, tecnológicos e associativos que, entre outros, caminham para mitigar os novos paradigmas de higiene e saúde pública. Este estudo assenta num problema difícil de mitigar, nas atitudes da coabitação com os AE e densidade populacional dos mesmos em espaços urbanos. Ou seja o problema do ponto de vista dos munícipes do fim a dar aos excrementos deixadas involuntariamente pelos AE nas habitações urbanas e nos espaços públicos, na ótica da higiene e saúde pública. Com intuito de alertar para o problema e minimizar as zoonoses. Beneficiando as famílias, os AE (e.g. abandonos) e a comunidade em geral. Menos dispendiosa para o governo, para a sociedade, que ajude na organização jurídica e que permita enraizar uma nova cultura de hábitos de higiene na coabitação com cão e/ou gato, conduzida por uma patente registada. Toda esta solução coliga em si, numa forte gestão comercial e de I&D de produtos Pet’s. A metodologia da investigação quantitativa, efetivada com a análise estatística no SPSS, ao questionário divulgado entre o fim de 2012 e 1ºtrimestre de 2013, da qual resultou uma amostra aleatória de 1180 munícipes na junta de freguesia de Agualva, Cacém, Cascais e Estoril. Aferiu-se pelos resultados que os munícipes com ou sem AE reivindicam uma legislação mais atuante que controlo e mitigue os excrementos dos AE, deixados involuntariamente nas habitações e espaços públicos. Incentivam uma nova cultura que mitigue zoonoses e melhore hábitos de saúde pública. Os munícipes manifestaram sensibilidade antropomórfica e assumem que colaboram com as obrigações legais. A presente dissertação está organizada em cinco capítulos: o Capitulo I, introduz a espectativa da investigação; o Capitulo II trata a revisão da literatura; o capítulo III apresenta a investigação metodológica; o Capitulo IV apresenta os resultados da metodologia aplicada; e o Capitulo V encerra o estudo com conclusões, contribuições esperadas e sugestões para futuras investigações. This monograph aims to gauge the domestication of the dog and cat (AE), the reality in family structures urban sanitary habits of AE and public health. Identify factors that characterize sensitivity. Notes for the development of commercial, legislative, technological and association’s efforts that, among others, aim to mitigate the new paradigms of public health and hygiene. This study is based on a complex problem to mitigate the attitudes of cohabitation with the AE and the same population density in urban areas. From the point of view of the citizens there is a problem about the droppings left unintentionally by AE in urban dwellings and public spaces, from the perspective of public health and hygiene. In order to raise awareness of the problem and minimize zoonosis, benefiting families, AE (e.g. dropouts) and the wider community. Less costly for the government, to society, to assist in organizing legal and allows root a new culture of hygiene in cohabitation with dog and / or cat, conducted by a registered patent. All this solutions coalition itself with strong commercial management and Pet Product’s R & D. The methodology of quantitative research, carried out with the statistical analysis in SPSS. The questionnaire circulated between the end of 2012 and 1st quarter of 2013, which resulted in a random sample of 1180 residents in the parish of Agualva, Cacém, Cascais and Estoril. Be gauged by the results that citizens with or without AE claim legislation more active than control and mitigate the droppings of AE, unintentionally left in homes and public spaces. Encourage a new culture that mitigates zoonosis habits and improve public health. Residents expressed sensitivity anthropomorphic and declare that collaborate with legal obligations. This dissertation is organized into five chapters: o Chapter I introduces the expectation of research; Chapter II deals with the Literature Review, Chapter III presents a Research Methodology, Chapter IV presents the results of the applied methodology, and Chapter V contains the study findings, expected contributions and suggestions for future research.

This master thesis dissertation aims to discuss andarrive to conclusions regarding the way business leaders fight back after a career setback. The work takes the form of a critical view correlating business leader’s comebacks, after a career setback, and the concept of leadership. In the first chapter are presented and discussed the most consensual and updated leadership types/styles and the new trends in the leadership field. Subsequently, are addressed some myths associated with the concept ofleadership – in this section, the concepts of Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence are discussed. In the second chapter, is presented the data and the outputs that resulted from the interviews made to three Portuguese business leaders. The interviews were made in order to gather and analyze information, finding out whatare the common aspects of a career setback and of a fighting back process, and to understand and draw conclusions regarding how the Portuguese market and business environment reacts to leaders that are hit by failure. Next, are discussed the three phases of the fighting back process. The shock phase, the retreat and reaction phase, and the comeback phase. At the end, in the third chapter, a conclusion is taken regarding the achievability of a leader to overcome the ultimate challenge thatis to transform failure into success. A presente dissertação de tese de mestrado tem comoobjectivo discutir e chegar a conclusões relativamente ao modo como líderes de negócios reagem depois de passarem pelo fracasso nas suas carreiras profissionais. A dissertação toma a forma de uma visão crítica que correlaciona a recuperação de líderes em situações adversas com o conceito de liderança. No primeiro capítulo são discutidos os diferentes conceitos e estilos de liderança e as novas tendências no campo da liderança. Subsequentemente, são abordados alguns mitos associados ao conceito de liderança – nesta parte, são discutidos os conceitos de Inteligência Emocional e de Inteligência Social. No segundo capítulo são apresentados os dados e outputs resultantes das entrevistas realizadas a três líderes de negócios portugueses. As entrevistas foram realizadas com o objectivo de recolher e analisar informação de modo a determinar quais os aspectos comuns aos processos de adversidade e aos processos de recuperação ao nível da carreira profissional, bem como compreender e retirar conclusões acerca de como o mercado português e o ambiente de negócios reagem alíderes que são atingidos pela adversidade e pelo fracasso. Seguidamente, são discutidas as três fases constituintes do processo de recuperação dos líderes: a fase do choque, a fase da retirada e reacção, e a fase do regresso. No final, no terceiro capítulo, são retiradas conclusões acerca da possibilidade de um líder ultrapassar o desafio derradeiro que é a capacidade de transformar o fracasso em sucesso.

O trabalho realizado teve como principal objectivo, a elaboração de um novo Plano de Comunicação para a empresa Sonae Sierra. A revisão da literatura que antecedeu a realização deste plano, demonstrou a importância da comunicação interna como ferramenta essencial para a gestão. A comunicação numa organização deve ser entendida como um meio fundamental para alcançar e facilitar um bom ambiente interno e motivacional dos colaboradores e assim contribuir para o sucesso da empresa. Para a realização do Plano de Comunicação foi feita uma revisão da literatura do tema, uma análise aos meios de comunicação interna utilizados pela empresa e um inquérito por questionário. Este estudo culminou com a elaboração de uma proposta de Plano de Comunicação Interna, adaptado à realidade e às necessidades sentidas pela empresa em estudo. A sua realização teve em conta os valores e visão estratégica da empresa e centra-se no colaborador e na sua vida na Sierra. The main objective of this work is the development of a new Communication Plan for the company Sonae Sierra. The literature review, provided evidence of the importance of internal communication as an essential tool for management. Communication in an organization must be understood as a key element to achieve and facilitate a good internal environment and a way to motivate employees contributing for the success of the company. In order to elaborate the Communication Plan, I carried out a literature review of the subject, a brief analysis of the internal communication instruments used and performed a survey to a random sample of company’ employees. The outcome of this project is a proposal of an Internal Communications Plan, adapted to the specific characteristics and needs of this company. Its development also took into account the values and strategic vision of the company and it is centred in the employees and their activities in Sierra.
