In the radio frequency range antennas make it possible to direct the emission of an oscillator in a very controlled way towards the receiver. In the optical frequency range, particle plasmons, i.e., collective resonant oscillations of the electrons in a metal nanoparticle, are a good candidate for antennas. Albeit, simple downscaling of concepts from radio waves is not possible, as, for example, losses in metals are much higher in the optical range. In this project, our ‘oscillator’ is a single GaAs semiconductor quantum dot which shows very stable photoemission. The ‘antenna’ is a metal nanowire in close proximity. The nanoantenna modifies the radiative emission rate k rad of the quantum dot, but also absorbs power, i.e., modifies the non-radiative rate k NR . Both can be deduced by their influence on the luminescence intensity I and lifetime τ of a single quantum dot.

With the aim of discussing the effect of the possible sources of systematic uncertainties in simulation models, the analysis of multiple muon events from the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso is reviewed. In particular, the predictions from different currently available hadronic interaction models are compared.

Recently, a simple method has been developed to obtain inverted GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots (QDs) below a quantum well (QW) via multi-step (hierarchical) self-assembly [1]. Here we report on the optical characterization of a series of structures GaAs QDs with different size. The study is performed by means of reflectance (R) down to T=15 K, photo- and thermo-reflectance (T>80 K) and by spectroscopic ellipsometry (at RT). Such measurements allow us to check the thickness and composition of the barrier layers and to complete the study of the electronic states involved in the emission properties of QDs and QW levels. QW states were well identified and their energies and shift with the size parameters well agree with the photoluminescence (PL) data. The identification of QD states seems less straightforward in R measurements and deserves further investigation.

The generation and long-haul transmission of highly entangled photon pairs is a cornerstone of emerging photonic quantum technologies with key applications such as quantum key distribution and distributed quantum computing. However, a natural limit for the maximum transmission distance is inevitably set by attenuation in the medium. A network of quantum repeaters containing multiple sources of entangled photons would allow overcoming this limit. For this purpose, the requirements on the source's brightness and the photon pairs' degree of entanglement and indistinguishability are stringent. Despite the impressive progress made so far, a definitive scalable photon source fulfilling such requirements is still being sought after. Semiconductor quantum dots excel in this context as sub-Poissonian sources of polarization entangled photon pairs. In this work, we present the state-of-the-art set by GaAs based quantum dots and use them as a benchmark to discuss the challenges toward the realization of practical quantum networks.

Photons generated on-demand by artificial atoms are used to demonstrate quantum teleportation., All-optical quantum teleportation lies at the heart of quantum communication science and technology. This quantum phenomenon is built up around the nonlocal properties of entangled states of light that, in the perspective of real-life applications, should be encoded on photon pairs generated on demand. Despite recent advances, however, the exploitation of deterministic quantum light sources in push-button quantum teleportation schemes remains a major open challenge. Here, we perform an important step toward this goal and show that photon pairs generated on demand by a GaAs quantum dot can be used to implement a teleportation protocol whose fidelity violates the classical limit (by more than 5 SDs) for arbitrary input states. Moreover, we develop a theoretical framework that matches the experimental observations and that defines the degree of entanglement and indistinguishability needed to overcome the classical limit independently of the input state. Our results emphasize that on-demand solid-state quantum emitters are one of the most promising candidates to realize deterministic quantum teleportation in practical quantum networks.
