301. 3.5 MeV triton activation for elements with Z<34

Abstract: The sensitivities for the determination of 25 elements from Z=4 to Z=33, using 3.5 MeV triton activation, were calculated from experimentally measured yields for 50 radioisotopes obtained via (t, n), (t, d), (t, 2n) or (t, α) reactions. For an irradiation of 1 hour at 1 μA, the calculated detection limits are better than 100 ppb for B, N, O, F, Na, Mg, Al, Si an S. Because of the Coulomb barrier, triton activation is of considerable interest for non destructive analysis of low Z elements in medium and high Z matrices. Finally integrated activation curves of high sensitivity elements were determined.

305. Fission of medium and heavy nuclei induced by 40Ar from 160 to 300 MeV: average total kinetic energy

Abstract: The average total kinetic energy of fission fragments for symmetric fission induced by argon ions has been measured over a wide range of fissility parameters. The results are compared with other results, with the predictions of Nix (liquid-drop model) and those of Mosel and Schmitt (two-center model). The shell effects predicted by Mosel and Schmitt are not seen, probably because of the high value of the excitation energies involved in the reactions. The variation of the total kinetic energy with the fissility parameter is rather well described by Nix but the calculated absolute values are too low. It is seems that the fissility parameter (used in the liquid-drop model) rather than the mass of the fissioning nucleus (in the Mosel and Schmitt model), is the important parameter which determines the total fragment kinetic energy of excited nuclei.

Abstract: The analytical possibilities of coulomb excitation by heavy ions are presented and absolute gamma yields at 90° to the incident beam are determined for about 40 elements. The complementarity of this method with other prompt analysis techniques (nuclear resonant reactions and X-ray excitation) are pointed out and various possible applications are discussed. For quantitative analysis, because of the energy range, the usual formulae derived from the Bethe equation for stopping power cannot be applied and then we propose an accurate and rapid calculation with a new definition of the average cross section.

308. Étude de quelques altérations de composition chimique des céramiques en milieu marin et terrestre

Abstract: The possible modifications in the chemical composition of ceramics over a period of time concern directly the methods used in the determination of ceramic provenance, methods based on the caracteri sties of the paste's composition. Two particular sorts of change related to time are examined. The first concerns ceramics which have been immersed in a marine environment and which have acquired a large amount of Magnesium, but which at the same time show considerable perturbations in the alcaline rate. The second sort of change concerns those ceramics whose slight over-firing has had the effect of creating conditions favorable for the separating out of certain constituents such as Potassium. This loss is generally négligeable when the ceramics are neither over-fired, nor when they are very much over-fired., Les modifications éventuelles au cours du temps de la composition chimique des céramiques concernent directement les méthodes qui cherchent à déterminer la provenance des céramiques en se référant aux caractéristiques de composition des pâtes. Deux types particuliers d'altération au cours du temps sont étudiés. Le premier concerne les céramiques qui ont séjourné en milieu marin et ont fixé une quantité importante de magnésium tout en présentant des perturbations notables des taux d'alcalins. Le second se réfère à des céramiques dont une surcuisson modérée a eu pour effet de créer des conditions favorables au départ de certains constituants comme le potassium. Abstract: A method is described for analyzing some light elements with high accuracy. Prompt gamma-ray spectrometry with 3.5 MeV alpha-particles from a Van de Graaff accelerator was used: this technique is non-destructive, rapid and experimentally simple. Sensitivities are indicated and factors affecting the accuracy of analysis are considered. A range of different materials has been analyzed and analytical results are presented.

Abstract: Measurements of light charged particle emission and of associated heavy nuclei have been used to explore reaction mechanisms in the interaction of 12 C projectiles at 30, 60 and 84 MeV/u with a Ni target. In this intermediate-energy range it is shown that the main characteristics for both the low-energy light particles and the target-like nuclei evolve very gently. There is no indication in the present data of a rapid change in the reaction mechanisms when exploring interactions with beam velocities larger than the speed of sound in nuclear matter or larger than the Fermi velocity.

Abstract: The reaction 1080-MeV $^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$+$^{238}\mathrm{U}$ has been studied via correlated fission fragments and He particles. Between $\frac{1}{3}$ and \textonehalf{} of the reaction cross section goes into fusionlike events to form composite nuclei excited to 500-800 MeV. The probability for such high-energy containment drops dramatically for $^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ projectiles between 27 and 44 MeV/u. Evaporative He particles for fusionlike events (multiplicity \ensuremath{\approx} 1.5) have been found to arise predominantly from the massively excited composite nuclei.

Abstract: Light fragments have been observed as a new class of products from heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies. Two mechanisms which produce such light fragments are well understood but is seems difficult to characterize a third one identified within a moving source framework. From a large set of inclusive data, a few features are extracted and eventual signatures of a multifragmentation process are discussed.

Abstract: In the average stopping power method 1 ) the formula error itself was negligible but systematic errors could be introduced by the stopping power data used in this formula. A method directly derived from the average stopping power method, but based on the use of two nuclear reactions, is described here. This method has a negligible formula error and does not require the use of any stopping power or range data: accurate and “self-consistent” analysis by irradiation with charged particles is then possible.

Abstract: The possbility of using prompt gamma-ray spectrometry with tritons and alpha particles is presented and absolute gamma yields at 90° to the incident beam are determined. The experimental detection limits obtained in niobium are compared with the best limits obtained with 2.5 MeV protons indicating that the use of a low-energy Van de Graaff accelerator (3.5 MV) permits the most important elements up to Z=26 to be detected in the range of 0.1 to 100 ppm. For some heavier elements the possibility of using heavy ions to induce Coulomb excitation is discussed. Some results are presented for the experiments made with alpha particles. Finally, the relative merits of different methods for quantitative analysis are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Reactions between heavy-ions at various energy regimes produce many nuclear fragments which can be populatedin highly excited states. The study of these fragments, detected at the end of their particle decay, is importantto investigate nuclear forces and structure effects. In recent years there have been many efforts to extend thesestudies towards the drip-lines, i.e. to systems far from the $\beta$-stability valley, by using accelerated radioactivebeams. The development of such infrastructures is accompanied by the development of more powerful detectorsand associated electronics, capable to identify ions with very different sizes and kinetic energies. Here we give twoexamples which show how advanced arrays can contribute to the studies on nuclear phenomena. The examplescome from the European FAZIA collaboration and from recent campaigns with the GARFIELD apparatus, thelatter in operation at the INFN Legnaro Laboratory (Italy) where the SPES RIB facility is under construction

Abstract: Multifragmentation of fused systems was observed for central collisions between 32 AMeV 129Xe and Sn, and 36 AMeV 155Gd and U. Previous extensive comparisons between the two systems led to the hypothesis of spinodal decomposition of finite systems as the origin of multifragmentation for incident energies around 30 AMeV. Abstract: Experimental data obtained with the $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ multidetector system INDRA are used to study midvelocity emissions of light charged particles (LCP) and intermediate mass fragments for peripheral and semicentral collisions of Xe and Sn at energies between 25 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The analysis is performed as a function of incident energy and of impact parameter, defined through the total transverse energy of LCP. The onset of midvelocity emissions is found to be close to 25 MeV/nucleon. Evaporative processes are also identified and are found to be sensitive to the impact parameter but show, for a given impact parameter, little dependence on the incident energy. A chemical analysis of the midvelocity component is performed. Compared to the evaporative process, midvelocity matter is found to be more neutron rich. Results are compared with the predictions of a dynamical model (CHIMERA). The general trends are well reproduced but some interesting differences are observed, notably in the amount of relative energy dissipation, showing that midvelocity emissions could be sensitive to the finer details of the interaction.

Abstract: The odd-even staggering of the yield of final reaction products has been studied as a function of proton (Z) and neutron (N) numbers for the collisions 84 Kr+112 Sn and 84 Kr+124 Sn at 35 MeV/nucleon, in a wide range of elements (up to Z ~ 20). The experimental data show that staggering effects rapidly decrease with increasing size of the fragments. Moreover the staggering in N is definitely larger than the one in Z. Similar general features are qualitatively reproduced by the GEMINI code. Concerning the comparison of the two systems, the staggering in N is in general rather similar, being slightly larger only for the lightest fragments produced in the n-rich system. Abstract: In order to obtain information on the time sequence and time scale of the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) in nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies it is proposed to analyze correlations between relative velocities of IMF's with respect to projectile-like fragments (PLF) and target-like fragments (TLF). Experimental data on the production of IMF's in the 124Sn+64Ni reaction, taken with the CHIMERA multidetector array at 35 MeV/nucleon, have been analyzed with the proposed method. Abstract: We study the anisotropy effects measured with INDRA at GSI in central collisions of Xe+Sn at 50 A.MeV and Au+Au at 60, 80, 100 A.MeV incident energy. The microcanonical multifragmentation model with non-spherical sources is used to simulate an incomplete shape relaxation of the multifragmenting system. This model is employed to interpret observed anisotropic distributions in the fragment size and mean kinetic energy. The data can be well reproduced if an expanding prolate source aligned along the beam direction is assumed. An either non-Hubblean or non-isotropic radial expansion is required to describe the fragment kinetic energies and their anisotropy. The qualitative similarity of the results for the studied reactions suggests that the concept of a longitudinally elongated freeze-out configuration is generally applicable for central collisions of heavy systems. Abstract: A new technique of large-area thin ion implanted silicon detectors has been developed within the R&D performed by the FAZIA Collaboration. The essence of the technique is the application of a low-temperature baking process instead of high-temperature annealing. This thermal treatment is performed after B+ ion implantation and Al evaporation of detector contacts, made by using a single adjusted Al mask. Extremely thin silicon pads can be therefore obtained. The thickness distribution along the X and Y directions was measured for a prototype chip by the energy loss of α-particles from 241Am (〈E α 〉 = 5.5 MeV). Preliminary tests on the first thin detector (area ≈ 20 × 20 mm2) were performed at the INFN-LNS cyclotron in Catania (Italy) using products emitted in the heavy-ion reaction 84Kr (E = 35 A MeV) + 112Sn. The ΔE − E ion identification plot was obtained using a telescope consisting of our thin ΔE detector (21 μm thick) followed by a typical FAZIA 510 μm E detector of the same active area. The charge distribution of measured ions is presented together with a quantitative evaluation of the quality of the Z resolution. The threshold is lower than 2 A MeV depending on the ion charge.

Abstract: The study of nuclear states built on clusters bound by valence neutrons in their molecular configurations is a field of large interest. Clustering becomes particularly important at the dripline, where weakly bound systems prevail. For light nuclei, at an excitation energy close to the particle separation value, there are experimental evidences of such structure effects, but this is still not the case for heavier nuclear systems. Several theoretical efforts have been done in the development of pre-formation alpha-clustering models, but there is still a lack of experimental data capable to give a direct feedback. The search of alpha-cluster evidences in medium-mass systems is therefore a new challenge which can give new hints in this field of research. In the past we have studied the reactions 250, 192 and 130 MeV O-16 + Sn-116, observing a significant increase in the fast emitted alpha-particle yield. This effect was ascribed to the presence of pre-formed alpha-clusters in the 16O projectile nucleus. To further investigate these aspects in a model independent way, a new experimental campaign has been performed with the GARFIELD + RCo set up. Two different reaction entrance channels (O-16 and F-19) at the same beam velocity (16AMeV) have been measured, leading to the same Rb-81* compound nucleus. In this contribution we report on the preliminary light-charged particles emission spectra obtained in coincidence with evaporation residues and their comparison with the results obtained from a Hybrid Exciton Model calculation.

Abstract: The de-excitation of medium mass nuclei 118,134Ba produced in fusion process of 78,86Kr on 40,48Ca targets at 10 AMeV is studied, in order to investigate the isospin dependence of the decay modes; the neutron enrichment of the compound nuclei is in fact expected to play an important role on the emission mechanisms, providing crucial information on fundamental nuclear quantities such as level density, fission barrier, viscosity and symmetry energy. The experiment was performed at INFN-LNS with the 4π multidetector for charged particles CHIMERA, used for the first time in this low energy regime, thanks to a suitable Pulse Shape Discrimination method for charge identification applied to the silicon detectors. Abstract: Simulations based on experimental data obtained from multifragmenting quasifused nuclei produced in central 129Xe + natSn collisions have been used to deduce event by event freeze-out properties on the thermal excitation energy range 4-12 AMeV. From these properties and temperatures deduced from proton transverse momentum fluctuations constrained caloric curves have been built. At constant average volumes caloric curves exhibit a monotonous behaviour whereas for constrained pressures a backbending is observed. Abstract: International audience; Detected energy, charge rise-time and pulse shape identfication capabilities of nTD silicon detectors under prolonged irradiation by energetic heavy ions have been studied. Sizeable effects on the amplitude and the risetime of the charge signal have been found for detectors irradiated with large fluences of stopped heavy ions, while much weaker effects were observed for punchingthrough ions. The robustness of ion identification based on digital pulse shape techniques has been evaluated.

Abstract: Decay modes of excited nuclei are investigated in $^{78,82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reactions at 5.5 MeV/nucleon. Charged products were measured by means of the $4\pi$ INDRA array. Kinetic-energy spectra and angular distributions of fragments with atomic number 3 $\le Z \le$ 28 indicate a high degree of relaxation and are compatible with a fission-like phenomenon. Persistence of structure effects is evidenced from elemental cross-sections ($\sigma_{Z}$) as well as a strong odd-even-staggering (o-e-s) of the light-fragment yields. The magnitude of the staggering does not significantly depend on the neutron content of the emitting system. Fragment-particle coincidences suggest that the light partners in very asymmetric fission are emitted either cold or at excitation energies below the particle emission thresholds. The evaporation residue cross-section of the $^{78}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction is slightly higher than the one measured in $^{82}$Kr + $^{40}$Ca reaction. The fission-like component is larger by $\sim$ 25% for the reaction having the lowest neutron-to-proton ratio. These experimental features are confronted to the predictions of theoretical models. The Hauser-Feshbach approach including the emission of fragments up to $Z$ = 14 in their ground states as well as excited states does not account for the main features of $\sigma_{Z}$. For both reactions, the transition-state formalism reasonably reproduces the $Z$-distribution of the fragments with charge 12 $\le Z \le$ 28. However, this model strongly overestimates the light-fragment cross-sections and does not explain the o-e-s of the yields for 6 $\le Z \le$ 10. The shape of the whole $Z$-distribution and the o-e-s of the light-fragment yields are satisfactorily reproduced within the dinuclear system framework which treats the competition between evaporation, fusion-fission and quasifission processes. The model suggests that heavy fragments come mainly from quasifission while light fragments are predominantly populated by fusion. An underestimation of the cross sections for 16 $\le Z \le$ 22 could signal a mechanism in addition to the capture process., Comment: 2 tables, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract: A quantitative comparison is made between the absolute cross sections associated with statistical and dynamical emission of heavy fragments in the 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni collisions experimentally investigated at 35A MeV beam energy using the multidetector CHIMERA. The result shows that the dynamical process is about twice as probable in the neutron-rich 124Sn+64Ni system as in the 112Sn+58Ni neutron-poor one. This unexpected and significant difference indicates that the reaction mechanism is strongly dependent on the entrance-channel isospin (N/Z) content.

Abstract: International audience; Recent important progress on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei, thanks to the high detection quality of the INDRA array, is reported. It concerns i) the radial collective energies involved in hot fragmenting nuclei/sources produced in central and semi-peripheral collisions and their influence on the observed fragment partitions, ii) a better knowledge of freeze-out properties obtained by means of a simulation based on all the available experimental information and iii) the quantitative study of the bimodal behaviour of the heaviest fragment distribution for fragmenting hot heavy quasi-projectiles which allows the extraction, for the first time, of an estimate of the latent heat of the phase transition.

Abstract: International audience; For fragments emitted in the reactions 124Sn + 64Ni and 112Sn + 58Ni at 35 AMeV, isotopic composition and velocity correlations have been studied as a function of the centrality of the collision, using the 4\pi Chimera multidetector. We have investigated the time scale for fragments formation, in order to distinguish between prompt dynamical and sequential statistical emission. Promptly emitted light fragments (Z \leq 9) produced in the mid-rapidity domain are characterised by larger N/Z ratio and stronger angular anisotropies than those produced in sequential statistical emission. Results are compared with stochastic BNV code simulations obtained for primary fragments. Valuable information on the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at sub-saturation densities are obtained.

Abstract: The charge distribution of the heaviest fragment detected in the decay of quasi-projectiles produced in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions has been observed to be bimodal. This feature is expected as a generic signal of phase transition in non-extensive systems. In this paper we present new analyses of experimental data from Au on Au collisions at 60, 80 and 100 MeV/nucleon showing that bimodality is largely independent of the data selection procedure, and of entrance channel effects. Abstract: Correlation functions, constructed from directional projections of the relative velocities of fragments, are used to determine the shape of the breakup volume in coordinate space. For central collisions of 129Xe + natSn at 50 MeV per nucleon incident energy, measured with the 4pi multi-detector INDRA at GSI, a prolate shape aligned along the beam direction with an axis ratio of 1:0.7 is deduced. Abstract: Signatures of isospin effects were investigated for neutron-rich (124Sn+64Ni) and neutron-poor (112Sn+58Ni) systems at 35 MeV/nucleon for noncentral collisions. The centrality dependence of these signatures was tested for several impact parameter estimators. Our main observations are (i) the yields of 1H and 3He particles in the neutron-poor system are strongly enhanced with respect to the neutron-rich system, and the yields of 3H, 6He, and 7,8Li are suppressed at all impact parameters, (ii) the yields of 2H, 4He, and 6Li particles are almost the same for both systems, (iii) the N/Z ratio of intermediate mass fragments is correlated with the neutron richness of the system and is weakly dependent on the centrality of the collision, and (iv) the neutron richness of the detected fragments increases strongly with decreasing rapidity in the range from that of the projectile-like fragment to the c.m. region. The gross features of experimental data are reproduced by quantum molecular dynamics model calculations. A comparison between model calculations and the data indicates that the fragments produced in the c.m. regions are weakly excited.

Abstract: Directed and elliptic flow for the $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au system at incident energies between 40 and 150 MeV per nucleon has been measured using the INDRA 4$\pi$ multi-detector. For semi-central collisions, the excitation function of elliptic flow shows a transition from in-plane to out-of-plane emission at around 100 MeV per nucleon. The directed flow changes sign at a bombarding energy between 50 and 60 MeV per nucleon and remains negative at lower energies. Molecular dynamics calculations (CHIMERA) indicate sensitivity of the global squeeze-out transition on the $\sigma$ and demonstrate the importance of angular momentum conservation in transport codes at low energies. The conditions for the appearance and possible origins of negative flow are discussed.

Abstract: Isotopic effects in the fragmentation of excited target residues following collisions of $^{12}$C on $^{112,124}$Sn at incident energies of 300 and 600 MeV per nucleon were studied with the INDRA 4$\pi$ detector. The measured yield ratios for light particles and fragments with atomic number $Z \leq$ 5 obey the exponential law of isotopic scaling. The deduced scaling parameters decrease strongly with increasing centrality to values smaller than 50% of those obtained for the peripheral event groups. Symmetry term coefficients, deduced from these data within the statistical description of isotopic scaling, are near $\gamma =$ 25 MeV for peripheral and $\gamma, Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire NIM; By combining data from a charged particle $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni experiment at 52 MeV/nucleon with an $^{36}$Ar+$^{58}$Ni experiment at 50 MeV/nucleon for which free neutrons have been detected, an increase in the neutron to proton ratio of the whole nuclear material at midrapidity has been experimentally observed in the reaction $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni at 52 MeV/nucleon. The neutron-to-proton ratio of the quasi-projectile emission is analyzed for the same reactions and is seen to decrease below the ratio of the initial system. Those observations suggest that an asymmetric exchange of neutrons and protons between the quasiprojectile and the midrapidity region exists.

Abstract: Some properties of fast, nonequilibrium splitting of projectiles in the 124Sn+64Ni reaction at 35AMeV were determined using the 4π CHIMERA detector system. In particular the charge distributions, in- and out-of-plane angular distributions, and relative velocities of projectilelike fragments were measured. The time scale of the processwas estimated and it turned out that the process is sequential but much faster than the ordinary, equilibrated fission.

Abstract: 124 Sn+ 64 Ni and 112 Sn+ 58 Ni reactions at 35 A MeV incident energy were studied by using the 688 Si–CsI telescopes of the forward part (1°⩽ θ lab ⩽30°) of CHIMERA multi-detector. The most central part, 1% of the total measured cross section was selected by means of a multidimensional analysis of the experimental observables. The detected isotopes of light fragments (3⩽ Z ⩽8) provided information on breakup temperatures of the emitting sources. The space–time structure of these sources was deduced from fragment correlations. An odd–even effect in the fragment production, enhanced by the isospin of the entrance channel, was observed. Freeze-out unbound neutron-to-proton relative densities for both studied reactions have been deduced, indicating for a possible isospin distillation mechanism related to a phenomenon of the liquid–gas phase transition in asymmetric systems.
