The current study assessed the effect of anthropometry and physical performance measures on selection in under-20 (U20) Gaelic football players. Fifty-four (n = 54) U20 players (40 elite and 14 sub-elite) were assessed for measures of stature, body mass, sum of 7 skinfolds (SUM), estimated bodyfat percentage (BF%; Withers equation), countermovement jump (CMJ), standing broad jump (SBJ), reactive strength index (RSI), 5-20m sprint times and Yo- Yo intermittent recovery test level 2 (YYIRT2). Additionally, back squat, bench press and chin-up estimated 1 repetition maximums (1RM) and relative strength were assessed. Elite players had significantly less SUM (56.9mm ± 13.6, 79.6mm ± 33.3, 29%) and BF% (10% ± 2.3, 14% ± 5.9, 28%) than sub-elite players. Elite players had significantly better CMJ (51.0cm ± 7.1, 45.9cm ± 3.3, 11%), SBJ (2.37m ± 0.16, 2.1m ± 0.15, 12%), RSI (1.90 ± 0.38, 1.5 ± 0.33, 24%), 20m speed (2.86s ± 0.09, 2.95s ± 0.10, 3%), YYIRT2 distances (593m ± 200, 483m ± 121, 23%), relative back squat (1.46 ± 0.19, 1.34 ± 0.20, 9%) and chin-up strength (1.36 ± 0.10, 1.26 ± 0.13, 8%). Following preseason training, thirtyseven elite players were retested. Players selected (n = 15) to start the first game presented no significant differences (p > 0.05) pre or post preseason training to those not selected (n = 22). The current findings suggest that BF%, CMJ, SBJ, RSI, YYIRT2, 20m speed, relative squat and chin-up strength facilitate selection to an elite team and can distinguish elite and sub-elite players but doesn't differentiate starters from non-starters. Coaches should prioritise the development of jumping abilities, speed, fitness and relative strength with developing Gaelic football players. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the current investigation was to understand the impact of pretraining neuromuscular performance and creatine kinase (CK) status on subsequent training performance in elite soccer players. Thirty soccer players (age: 25.3 ± 3.1 years; height: 183 ± 7 cm; mass: 72 ± 7 kg) were involved in this observational study. Each morning before training, players completed assessments for neuromuscular performance (countermovement jump; CMJ) and CK levels. Global positioning technology provided external load: total distance, high-speed distance, sprint distance, accelerations, decelerations, average metabolic power, explosive distance, and high metabolic power distance (.25.5⋅kg-1). Mixed-effect linear models revealed significant effects for CK and CMJ Z-score on total high-speed distance, very high-speed distance, accelerations, decelerations, explosive distance, and maximal velocity. Effects are reported with 90% confidence limits. A CK Z-score of +1 corresponded to a 25.5 ± 1.1, 23.9 ± 0.5, 24.3 6 2.9%, 24.1 ± 2.9%, 23.1 ± 2.9%, and 24.6 ± 1.9%, reduction in total high-speed distance, very high-speed distance, accelerations, decelerations, explosive distance, and maximal velocity, respectively. Countermovement jump Z-score of 21 corresponded to a 23.5 ± 1.1, 22.9 ± 0.5, 22.1 ± 1.4, 25.3 6 2.9%, 23.8 ± 2.9%, 21.1 ± 2.9%, and 25.6 ± 1.2% reduction in these external load measures. Magnitude-based analysis revealed that the practical size of the effect of a pretraining CMJ Z-score of 21 and CK Z-score of +1 would have on total high-speed distance, very high-speed distance, high metabolic power distance (.25.5 ⋅kg-1), accelerations, decelerations, explosive distance, and maximal velocity was likely negative. The results of this study suggest that systematic pretraining monitoring of neuromuscular and muscle stress within soccer cohorts can provide coaches with information about the training output that can be expected from individual players during a training session. Background: Previous research has reported that elite Gaelic football players' carbohydrate (CHO) intakes are sub-optimal, especially, in the lead up to competitive matches. Despite clear decrements in running performance across elite Gaelic football matches, there are no studies that have investigated nutrition interventions on match-related Gaelic football performance. The aim of this study was to determine whether a higher-CHO diet in line with sports nutrition guidelines can improve Gaelic football-related performance compared to lower CHO intakes previously observed in Gaelic footballers. Methods: Twelve Gaelic football players completed a Gaelic football simulation protocol (GFSP) on two occasions after consuming a high-CHO diet (7 g·kg−1) (HCHO) or an energy-matched lower-CHO diet (3.5 g·kg−1) (L-CHO) for 48 h. Movement demands and heart rate were measured using portable global positioning systems devices. Countermovement jump height (CMJ) and repeated-sprint ability (RSA) were measured throughout each trial. Expired respiratory gases were collected throughout the trial using a portable gas analyser. Blood samples were taken at rest, half-time, and post-simulation. Results: There was no significant difference in total distance (p = 0.811; η2 = 0.005) or high-speed running distance (HSRD) covered between both trials. However, in the second half of the HCHO trial, HSRD was significantly greater compared to the second half of the LCHO trial (p = 0.015). Sprint distance covered during GFSP was significantly greater in HCHO (8.1 ± 3.5 m·min−1) compared with LCHO (6.4 ± 3.2 m·min−1) (p = 0.011; η2 = 0.445). RSA performance (p < 0.0001; η2 = 0.735) and lower body power (CMJ) (p < 0.0001; η2 = 0.683) were significantly greater during the HCHO trial compared to LCHO. Overall CHO oxidation rates were significantly greater under HCHO conditions compared to LCHO (3.3 ± 0.5 vs. 2.7 ± 0.6 g·min−1) (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.798). Blood lactate concentrations were significantly higher during HCHO trial versus LCHO (p = 0.026; η2 = 0.375). There were no significant differences in plasma glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), and glycerol concentration between trials. In both trials, all blood metabolites were significantly elevated at half-time and post-trial compared to pre-trial. Nutrition intake plays a crucial role in improving athletic performance, enhancing adaptations to training, and augmenting recovery from exercise. However, research has reported that Gaelic footballers consistently fail to meet energy and carbohydrate recommendations. Sports nutrition knowledge (SNK) can influence the dietary intake of athletes, and therefore has the potential to have a significant impact on athletic performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the current level of SNK in elite Gaelic footballers (n = 100). An online version of the Nutrition for Sport Knowledge Questionnaire (NSKQ) was used to assess sports SNK. The overall mean SNK scores for Gaelic footballers and practitioners were 47.6 ± 12.3% and 78.1 ± 8.3%, respectively. There were no differences in knowledge between age groups, education level or divisional status. The top three sources of nutrition information identified by participants were team dietitian/nutritionists (84.0%), athletic trainers/strength and conditioning coaches (73%), and social media (37%). The results show that there is a major gap in the SNK of Gaelic footballers, while practitioners demonstrated a promising SNK, that could support Gaelic footballers. There is a need for development of interventions and knowledge transfer partnerships, including more effective methods of educating Gaelic footballers and translating sports nutrition principles to players. Developing appropriate nutritional education strategies using online resources and mobile applications could help to improve nutritional knowledge and practice of Gaelic footballers. There is currently a lack of research into the energy demands and associated nutritional intakes of elite Gaelic football players during the pre-season period, which is a crucial time of year for physical development. The aim of the current study was to investigate the dietary intake and energy expenditure (EE) of elite Gaelic football players during a typical pre-season week. Over a seven-day period, which included four training days and three rest days, dietary intake (validated self-reported estimated food diary) and EE (Sensewear Pro armband) were recorded in 18 male players from a single elite inter-county Gaelic football team. Average energy intake (EI) (3283 ± 483 kcal) was significantly (p = 0.002) less than average EE (3743 ± 335 kcal), with a mean daily energy deficit of −460 ± 503 kcal. Training days elicited the greatest deficits between intake and expenditure. The mean carbohydrate (CHO) intake was 3.6 ± 0.7 g/kg/day, protein intake was 2.1 ± 0.5 g/kg/day, and fat intake was 1.6 ± 0.2 g/kg/day. These findings indicate that the dietary practices of the sampled players were inadequate to meet EE and CHO recommendations. Training days are of particular concern, with the players not altering energy and CHO intake to encounter increased energy demands. The epithelial layer of the gastrointestinal tract contains invaginations, called glands or crypts, which are colonized by symbiotic and pathogenic microorganisms and may function as designated niches for certain species. Factors that control gland colonization are poorly understood, but bacterial chemotaxis aids occupation of these sites. We report here that a Helicobacter pylori cytoplasmic chemoreceptor, TlpD, is required for gland colonization in the stomach. tlpD mutants demonstrate gland colonization defects characterized by a reduction in the percentage of glands colonized but not in the number of bacteria per gland. Consistent with TlpD's reported role in reactive oxygen species (ROS) avoidance, tlpD mutants showed hallmarks of exposure to high ROS. To assess the role of host-generated ROS in TlpD-dependent gland colonization, we utilized mice that lack either the ability to generate epithelial hydrogen peroxide or immune cell superoxide. tlpD gland colonization defects were rescued to wild-type H. pylori levels in both of these mutants. These results suggest that multiple types of innate immune-generated ROS production limit gland colonization and that bacteria have evolved specific mechanisms to sense and direct their motility in response to this signal and thus spread throughout tissue., (Copyright © 2018 American Society for Microbiology.)

Although it is appreciated that bacterial chemotaxis systems rely on coupling, also called scaffold, proteins to both connect input receptors with output kinases and build interkinase connections that allow signal amplification, it is not yet clear why many systems use more than one coupling protein. We examined the distinct functions for multiple coupling proteins in the bacterial chemotaxis system of Helicobacter pylori , which requires two nonredundant coupling proteins for chemotaxis: CheW and CheV1, a hybrid of a CheW and a phosphorylatable receiver domain. We report that CheV1 and CheW have largely redundant abilities to interact with chemoreceptors and the CheA kinase, and both similarly activated CheA's kinase activity. We discovered, however, that they are not redundant for formation of the higher order chemoreceptor arrays that are known to form via CheA-CheW interactions. In support of this possibility, we found that CheW and CheV1 interact with each other and with CheA independent of the chemoreceptors. Therefore, it seems that some microbes have modified array formation to require CheW and CheV1. Our data suggest that multiple coupling proteins may be used to provide flexibility in the chemoreceptor array formation.
