Background: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PL) is a subtype of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Studies have suggested that tumors with PL morphology represent a group of neoplasms with clinopathologic characteristics corresponding to different entities including extramedullary plasmablastic tumors associated with plasma cell myeloma (PCM). The goal of the current study was to evaluate the genetic similarities and differences among PL, DLBCL (AIDS-related and non AIDS-related) and PCM using array-based comparative genomic hybridization. Results: Examination of genomic data in PL revealed that the most frequent segmental gain (> 40%) include: 1p36.11-1p36.33, 1p34.1-1p36.13, 1q21.1-1q23.1, 7q11.2-7q11.23, 11q12-11q13.2 and 22q12.2-22q13.3. This correlated with segmental gains occurring in high frequency in DLBCL (AIDS-related and non AIDS-related) cases. There were some segmental gains and some segmental loss that occurred in PL but not in the other types of lymphoma suggesting that these foci may contain genes responsible for the differentiation of this lymphoma. Additionally, some segmental gains and some segmental loss occurred only in PL and AIDS associated DLBCL suggesting that these foci may be associated with HIV infection. Furthermore, some segmental gains and some segmental loss occurred only in PL and PCM suggesting that these lesions may be related to plasmacytic differentiation. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, the current study represents the first genomic exploration of PL. The genomic aberration pattern of PL appears to be more similar to that of DLBCL (AIDS-related or non AIDS-related) than to PCM. Background: Genital Chlamydia (C) trachomatis infection has been recognized as the single most common cause of pelvic inflammatory disease leading to severe tubal damage, ectopic pregnancy, infertility and hydrosalpinx. However, the mechanism underlying the formation of hydrosalpinx induced by C. trachomatis infection remains largely unknown. We performed this study to determine the involvement of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP-activated chloride channel that regulates epithelial electrolyte and fluid secretion, in hydrosalpinx fluid formation. Methods: Western blot analysis was used to determine CFTR expression in the hydrosalpinges that were seen on the ultrasound scans of infertile assisted reproduction treatment patients. Correlation with C. trachomatis infection was done by testing patients' sera for C. trachomatis immunoglobulin G antibody titer using a Capita enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based kit. CFTR involvement was further verified in a rat C. trachomatis infection model and confirmed using CFTR mutant (CFTR tm1Unc) mice. Results: Here we report on the up-regulated expression of CFTR in the hydrosalpinx tissues of infertile patients with detectable serum levels of C. trachomatis antibody (immunoglobulin G). In a rat model, increased CFTR expression and fluid accumulation could be observed in the uterine horns infected with C. trachomatis elementary bodies, which was reversed by antibiotics treatment. In C. trachomatis–infected CFTR tm1Unc mice, however, no detectable fluid accumulation was observed. Conclusion: These findings suggest the involvement of CFTR in the pathogenesis of hydrosalpinx fluid formation and may provide grounds for a better treatment strategy to improve assisted reproduction treatment outcome in infertile patients with hydrosalpinx. Abstract  The growth pattern of pilocytic astrocytoma (PAs) is unpredictable. Gene expression profiling has recently demonstrated an inverse relationship between myelin basic protein (MBP) expression and progression free survival (PFS) in PAs. We present here the pattern of expression of oligodendroglial differentiation markers (ODMs) in PAs by immunohistochemistry and their correlation with PI and PFS. Sixty-four cases of PA were reviewed and representative sections were stained for Ki-67 and ODMs, including MBP, platelet-derived growth factor receptor-α (PDGFR-α), Olig-1, and Olig-2. Sections were graded semi-quantitatively for intensity (I: 0–3) and extent (E: 0–4) of staining. PI was expressed as a percentage of Ki-67 positive cells. Immunoreactivity of MBP, PDGFR-α, Olig-1, and Olig-2 was observed in 84, 56, 97, and 75% of cases, respectively. There was a statistically significant inverse correlation between MBP expression and PI (r 2 = .696, p  = .014). A positive correlation was observed between PDGFR-α and PI (r 2 = .727, p  = .011). This article examines the rationale for studying familial glioma. A strategy was also proposed for the GLIOGENE study. Examples of inherited genetic syndromes involving glioma include neurofibromatosis type 1 and 2, tuberous sclerosis, Turcot's syndrome and Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Glioma is a malignant brain tumor with varying prognosis. Its prognosis depends on malignancy grade or histologic differentiation.

Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) foliage has been touted as a possible energy crop. High-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis of the methanolic kudzu foliage extracts confirmed the presence of robinin (kaempferol-3-O-robinoside-7-O-rhamnoside). Robinin accounted for 0.65 0.16% (dry basis) of kudzu biomass. Fast performance liquid chromatography (FPLC) was employed to fractionate robinin from the crude extract. The antioxidant capacity of robinin was evaluated by an oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. The ORAC values of pure standard were compared with those of the extract fractions. One milligram of the FPLC-fractionated robinin generated an ORAC value of 5.15 2.00 mol/mg of Trolox, whereas 1 mg of pure robinin generated an ORAC value of 12.34 0.45 mol/mg of Trolox. An effective working relationship between physicians and nurses is enhanced by fostering positive perceptions and collaborative attitudes between the two professions. This brief paper examines the effect of an interprofessional simulation-based communication education program in enhancing medical and nursing students' perceptions of each other's profession and their attitudes toward nurse-physician collaboration. Pretest-Posttest design was conducted on 96 medical and nursing students who demonstrated the existence of professional stereotypes in the baseline data. This study showed that by promoting open communication, shared information and decision-making, mutual respect, and trust during the interprofessional simulation training, a positive transformation on the stereotypes and attitudes toward nurse-physician collaboration can be achieved. The purpose of this paper is the assessment of sin us node competence over time in patients with isolated atrioventricular block (AV block). Patients implanted with AV synchronous pacemakers for isolated AV block between December 1993 and June 1995 were prospectively evaluated at pre-discharge, 6 weeks, and subsequent 6 months follow-up with respect to atrial rate monitors/24-hour Holter and modified exercise test. Patients unable to maintain AV synchronous pacing or complete a modified exercise test were excluded. Sinus node competency is interpreted as: (1) absence of atrial brady- or tachyarrhythmia, (2) ability to achieve a minimum heart rate of ⩾ 100 beats/min modified exercise test or during daily activities. There were 58 patients (22 women), mean age 71.0 ± 13.8 with an average follow-up of 304 months (11-40). Three patients did not complete a modified exercise test, 4 patients were lost to follow-up, and 2 patients were unable to maintain AV synchronous pacing. Of the remaining 49 Patients, 3 developed chronic or paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. No patient developed significant bradyarrhythmias. All patients achieved a heart rate of ⩾ 100 beats/min modified exercise test. In our group of patients with isolated AV block within a moderate follow-up period, development of sinoatrial dysfunction was rare (6%). We report on a 71-year-old man who had a dual chamber pacemaker implanted in 2991. A Glass IV fracture of the Telectronics Accufix 330-801 atrial lead was observed on a chest X ray in December 1993. Serial chest X my and fluoroscopy documented stable position of the migrated fractured J wire. The patient remained asymptomatic and a decision for conservative monitoring was made. A subsequent finding of a right atrial mass on echocardiography and evidence of pulmonary embolism on lung scan prompted a change of strategy. The patient underwent atriotomy, and a right atrial thrombus was discovered associated with the fractured J retention wire, both of which were extracted uneventfully. This case is illustrative that despite apparent stability of a Class IV fructure, it may result in endothelial injury with a thrombogenic nidus and resultant complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The microbial community structure in the throat and its shift after laryngectomy in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) patients were investigated. Thirty swab samples taken prior to laryngectomy (SLC), 18 samples 1 week after laryngectomy (SLCA1w), and 30 samples 24 weeks after laryngectomy (SLCA24w) from 30 LSCC patients were examined. Microbial diversity was profiled through sequencing the V3-V4 variable region of the 16S rRNA gene. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) was used to validate the 16S rRNA sequence data for the V3-V4 region. The community structure and function of throat microbiota were assessed by PICRUSt (phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states) analysis. Both alpha and beta diversity results showed significant differences in the throat microbiota of LSCC patients before and after laryngectomy (P=0.05). The drinking index of the SLC group was positively associated with the genus abundance of Prevotella (P=0.05). The SLCA1w group had lower abundances of Fusobacterium, Leptotrichia, Lachnoanaerobaculum, and Veillonella than the SLC group (P=0.05). The SLCA24w group had higher abundances of Streptococcus and Leptotrichia as well as lower abundances of Fusobacterium and Alloprevotella than the SLC group (P=0.05). The throat microbiomes of the SLC group could be implicated in human cancer signaling pathways, as evidenced by PICRUSt analysis (P=0.05). Our study clarifies alterations in throat microbial community structure and function in LSCC patients during the perioperative period and postoperative recovery period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
