We investigate the relations among the stellar continuum-subtracted 8 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH 8 μ m) emission, 24 μm hot dust emission and 160 μm cold dust emission in 15 nearby face-on spiral galaxies in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey sample. The relation between PAH 8 and 24 μm emission measured in ∼2 kpc regions is found to exhibit a significant amount of scatter, and strong spatial variations are observed in the (PAH 8 μ m)/24 μm surface brightness ratio. In particular, the (PAH 8 μ m)/24 μm surface brightness ratio is observed to be high in the diffuse interstellar medium and low in bright star-forming regions and other locations with high 24 μm surface brightness. PAH 8 μ m emission is found to be well-correlated with 160 μm emission on spatial scales of ∼2 kpc, and the (PAH 8 μ m)/160 μm surface brightness ratio is generally observed to increase as the 160 μm surface brightness increases. These results suggest that the PAHs are associated with the diffuse, cold dust that produces most of the 160 μm emission in these galaxies, and the variations in the (PAH 8 μ m)/160 μm ratio may generally be indicative of either the intensity or the spectrum of the interstellar radiation field that is heating both the PAHs and the diffuse interstellar dust. We present deep far-infrared observations of the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 891 obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The maps confirm the detection of thermal emission from the inner circumgalactic medium (halo) and spatially resolve a dusty superbubble and a dust spur (filament). The dust temperature of the halo component is lower than that of the disc but increases across a region of diameter ≈8.0 kpc extending at least 7.7 kpc vertically from one side of the disc, a region we call a superbubble because of its association with thermal X-ray emission and a minimum in the synchrotron scale height. This outflow is breaking through the thick disc and developing into a galactic wind, which is of particular interest because NGC 891 is not considered a starburst galaxy; the star formation rate surface density, 0.03 M⊙ yr−1 kpc−2, and gas fraction, just |$10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| in the inner disc, indicate the threshold for wind formation is lower than previous work has suggested. We conclude that the star formation surface density is sufficient for superbubble blowout into the halo, but the cosmic ray electrons may play a critical role in determining whether this outflow develops into a fountain or escapes from the gravitational potential. The high dust-to-gas ratio in the dust spur suggests the material was pulled out of NGC 891 through the collision of a minihalo with the disc of NGC 891. We conclude that NGC 891 offers an example of both feedback and satellite interactions transporting dust into the halo of a typical galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When combined with infrared observations with the Spitzer telescope (3 to 160 μm), the Herschel Space Observatory now fully samples the thermal dust emission up to 500 μm and enables us to better estimate the total infrared-submm energy budget (LTIR) of nearby galaxies. We present new empirical calibrations to estimate resolved and integrated total infrared luminosities from Spitzer and Herschel bands used as monochromatic or combined tracers. We base our calibrations on resolved elements of nearby galaxies (3 to 30 Mpc) observed with Herschel. We perform a resolved spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling of these objects using the Draine & Li dust models and investigate the influence of the addition of Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) measurements in the estimation of LTIR. We find that using data up to 250 μm leads to local LTIR values consistent with those obtained with a complete coverage (up to 500 μm) within ±10 per cent for most of our resolved elements. We then study the distribution of energy in the resolved SEDs of our galaxies. The bulk of energy (30–50 per cent) is contained in the [70–160 μm] band. The [24–70 μm] fraction decreases with increasing metallicity. The [160–1100 μm]submillimetre band can account for up to 25 per cent of the LTIR in metal-rich galaxies. We investigate the correlation between the total infrared (TIR) surface brightnesses/luminosities and monochromatic Spitzer and Herschel surface brightnesses/luminosities. The three Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) bands can be used as reliable monochromatic estimators of the LTIR, the 100 μm band being the most reliable monochromatic tracer. There is also a strong correlation between the SPIRE 250 μm and LTIR, although with more scatter than for the PACS relations. We also study the ability of our monochromatic relations to reproduce integrated LTIR of nearby galaxies as well as LTIR of z ∼ 1–3 sources. Finally, we provide calibration coefficients that can be used to derive TIR surface brightnesses/luminosities from a combination of Spitzer and Herschel surface brightnesses/fluxes and analyse the associated uncertainties. Low-metallicity galaxies exhibit different properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) compared to nearby spiral galaxies. Obtaining a resolved inventory of the various gas and dust components of massive star-forming regions and diffuse ISM is necessary to understand how those differences are driven. We present a study of the infrared/submillimetre (submm) emission of the massive star-forming complex N158–N159–N160 located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Combining observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope (3.6–70 μm), the Herschel Space Observatory (100–500 μm) and Large APEX Bolometer Camera (LABOCA) (on Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment, 870 μm) allows us to work at the best angular resolution available now for an extragalactic source (a few parsec for the LMC). We observe a remarkably good correlation between the Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) and LABOCA emission and resolve the low surface brightnesses emission. We use the Spitzer and Herschel data to perform a resolved spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling of the complex. Using modified blackbodies, we derive an average ‘effective’ emissivity index of the cold dust component βc of 1.47 across the complex. If βc is fixed to 1.5, we find an average temperature of ∼27 K (maximum of ∼32 K in N160). We also apply the Galliano et al. SED modelling technique (using amorphous carbon to model carbon dust) to derive maps of the star formation rate, the grain temperature, the mean starlight intensity, the fraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) or the dust mass surface density of the region. We observe that the PAH fraction strongly decreases in the H ii regions we study. This decrease coincides with peaks in the mean radiation field intensity map. The dust surface densities follow the far-infrared distribution, with a total dust mass of 2.1 × 104 M⊙ (2.8 times less than if carbon dust was modelled by standard graphite grains) in the resolved elements we model. We also find a non-negligible amount of dust in the region called ‘N159 South’, a molecular cloud that does not show massive star formation. We also investigate the drivers of the Herschel/PACS (Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer) and SPIRE submm colours and find that the submm ratios correlate strongly with the radiation field intensity and with the near and mid-IR surface brightnesses equally well. Comparing our dust map to H i and CO observations in N159, we then investigate variations in the gas-to-dust mass ratio (G/D) and the CO-to-H2 conversion factor XCO. A mean value of G/D∼356 is derived when using XCO = 7×1020 H2 cm−2 (K km s−1)−1. If a constant G/D across N159 is assumed, we derive a XCO conversion factor of 5.4×1020 H2 cm−2 (K km s−1)−1. We finally model individual regions to analyse variations in the SED shape across the complex and the 870 μm emission in more details. ABSTRACT Taking advantage of the unprecedented combination of sensitivity and angular resolution afforded by the Herschel Space Observatory at far-infrared and submillimetre wavelengths, we aim to characterize the physical properties of cold dust within nearby galaxies, as well as the associated uncertainties, namely the robustness of the parameters we derive using different modified blackbody models. For a pilot subsample of the KINGFISH (Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: A Far-Infrared Survey with Herschel) key programme, we perform two-temperature fits of the Spitzer and Herschel photometric data (from 24 to 500 μm), with a warm and a cold component, both globally and in each resolution element. We compare the results obtained from different analysis strategies. At global scale, we observe a range of values of the modified blackbody fit parameters βc (0.8-2.5) and Tc (19.1-25.1 K). We compute maps of our modelling parameters with βc fixed or treated as a free parameter to test the robustness of the temperature and dust surface density maps we deduce. When the emissivity is fixed, we observe steeper temperature gradients as a function of radius than when it is allowed to vary. When the emissivity is fitted as a free parameter, barred galaxies tend to have uniform fitted emissivities. Gathering the parameters obtained in each resolution element in a Tc-βc diagram underlines an anticorrelation between the two parameters. It remains difficult to assess whether the dominant effect is the physics of dust grains, noise, or mixing along the line of sight and in the beam. We finally observe in both cases that the dust column density peaks in central regions of galaxies and bar-ends (coinciding with molecular gas density enhancements usually found in these locations). We also quantify how the total dust mass varies with our assumptions about the emissivity index as well as the influence of the wavelength coverage used in the fits. We show that modified blackbody fits using a shallow emissivity (β < 2.0) lead to significantly lower dust masses compared to the β < 2.0 case, with dust masses lower by up to 50 per cent if βc = 1.5, for instance. We report far-infrared and submillimeter observations of supernova 1987A, the star whose explosion was observed on 23 February 1987 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy located 160,000 light years away. The observations reveal the presence of a population of cold dust grains radiating with a temperature of about 17 to 23 kelvin at a rate of about 220 times the luminosity of the Sun. The intensity and spectral energy distribution of the emission suggest a dust mass of about 0.4 to 0.7 times the mass of the Sun. The radiation must originate from the supernova ejecta and requires the efficient precipitation of all refractory material into dust. Our observations imply that supernovae can produce the large dust masses detected in young galaxies at very high redshifts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BSTRACT We present total infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) luminosity functions derived from large representative samples of galaxies at z∼ 0, selected at IR and UV wavelengths from the Imperial IRAS Faint Source Catalogue redshift data base (IIFSCz) catalogue, and the GALEX All-Sky Imaging Survey (AIS), respectively. We augment these with deep Spitzer and GALEX imaging of galaxies in the 11 Mpc Local Volume Legacy (LVL) Survey, allowing us to extend these luminosity functions to lower luminosities (∼106 L⊙), and providing good constraints on the slope of the luminosity function at the extreme faint end for the first time. Using conventional star formation prescriptions, we generate from our data the star formation rate (SFR) distribution function for the local Universe. We find that it has a Schechter form, the faint-end slope has a constant value (to the limits of our data) of α=−1.51 ± 0.08 and the 'characteristic' SFR ψ* is 9.2 M⊙ yr−1. We also show the distribution function of the SFR volume density; we then use this to calculate a value for the total SFR volume density at z∼ 0 of 0.025 ± 0.0016 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3, of which ∼20 per cent is occurring in starbursts. Decomposing the total star formation by infrared luminosity, it can be seen that 9 ± 1 per cent is due to LIRGs, and 0.7 ± 0.2 per cent is occurring in ULIRGs. By comparing UV and IR emission for galaxies in our sample, we also calculate the fraction of star formation occurring in dust-obscured environments, and examine the distribution of dusty star formation: we find a very shallow slope at the highly extincted end, which may be attributable to line-of-sight orientation effects as well as conventional internal extinction.
