Employees constitute an integral part of every organization, and their behaviours cultivate success or failure for the entire industry. Each organization should be cognizant of its employees' behaviours that can be translated through their behavioural outcomes. One of such outcomes is the level of gratitude (Shukr in Islamic perspective) that can be conceptualized further by establishing its link with employees' social or pro-social behaviours using lens of Islamic philosophy. The literature from the perspective of Holy Quran and Sunnah (Prophet's practices) suggests that a good number of employees working in different industries have an element of dissatisfaction reflected through various factors including lack of Shukr (gratitude). This calls for a conceptual undertaking along with its subsequent empirical assessment as the former needs a robust and holistic understanding before proceeding to the latter. The study begins with a strong conceptualization by comparing conventional and Islamic perspective of Shukr and to synthesize key factors which can later help in scale development of Shukr. After a careful comparison between conventional and Islamic viewpoints, three components (dimensions) of Shukr were conceptualized such as Shukr bi'l-qalb (gratitude expressed by inner feelings), Shukr bi'l-lisan (gratitude expressed by tongue) and Shukr bi'l-badan wa'l-arkan (gratitude expressed by body and limbs). This conceptualization can potentially serve as a tool to examine the level of contentment, employees exhibit at workplace which eventually leads to life and job satisfaction.

Red palm weevil (RPW) causes severe damage to date palm trees, leading to the death of trees if not detected and treated in time. A major obstacle in RPW control is the difficulty in identifying an early stage infestation In the present study, we measured the efficacy of some non-invasive optical devices including cameras (digital camera and thermal camera), TreeRadarUnit™ (TRU) (Radar 2000, Radar 900), resistograph, magnetic DNA biosensor, and Near-infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) to detect RPW infestation in date palm trees under field conditions at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Date palm trees used in these experiments were selected based on visual observations. After inspection of date palm trees with different devices to detect RPW infestation, each tree was taken down and dissected in detail to validate the accuracy of each device. Results indicated that the visual RPW detection approach presented the highest accuracy (87%) followed by Radar 2000 (77%), Radar 900 (73%), resistograph (73%), thermal camera (61%), and digital camera (52%). Moreover, different stages of RPW placed in plastic cups were fastened onto the healthy date palm trunks to judge RPW presence, the magnetic DNA biosensor correctly detected RPW eggs 75% of the time, followed by detection of larvae (64%) and the control (empty cup) (54%). In another experiment where determinations were made in an open area, the efficiency of the DNA biosensor for detecting adults was 100%, followed by 83%, 63%, 60%, and 39% for pupae, larvae, eggs, and control, respectively. Absorption spectra generated through NIRS for infested, wounded, and control samples of date palm tissue showed a remarkable variation in the gradient of the corresponding peaks between 1850 nm and 1950 nm. Chalcogenide films containing various contents of coumarin (CO) are deposited on the p-type Si substrates. Al/coumarin doped chalcogenide films/p-Si contact exhibits a rectifying behavior. The electrical and photoresponse properties of the prepared diodes are characterized by current and capacitance measurements under various illumination intensities. The addition of coumarin to TI 2 Se-Pr 2 Se 3 significantly affects the characteristic parameters of diodes. Kohlrausch function is used as an appropriate way to obtain the photo charge density (ρ ph ) and the relaxation time constant from the photocurrent/capacitance transients. In Pakistan, extensive use of several precarious chewable tobacco formulations has made oral cancer the second leading malignancy. Selection of literature was done by a survey of studies published from 1990 to 2017 mainly, from PUBMED and few from other search engines, on naswar, gutka, areca nut and betel quid, which included published reviews, original articles and other data sources on chewable tobacco, its epidemiology, pathological implications, and psychological effects. These studies have revealed that the chemicals in these formulations bind and mutate DNA of oral mucosa through down regulating cellular repair pathways and upregulating genetic networks associated with pathogenesis. Areca nut, having aercoline (the major alkaloid) causes carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and genotoxicity of oral mucosa through increased production of growth factors and corticotrophin-releasing hormone, and genetic alteration in expression of CASP8, APAF-1, BAX, BAD, and upregulation of caspas-3. Gutka addiction leads to precancerous lesions resulting in characteristic facial abnormalities, following trismus. Naswar, in addition to oral cancer, causes adverse cardiovascular events by reducing glutathione per oxidase (GPx) and super-oxide dismutase (SOD), serum levels of HDL, whereas, increasing the ratio of cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides and LDL-C/HDL-C. Betel quid (Paan), causes psychoactivity affecting central and autonomic nervous systems leading to dependence with decreased cognition, euphoria, sweating, salivation, palpitation, heightened alertness and zest to work. Metabolically, cardio-acceleration, cortical desynchronisation of EEG, elevated plasma noradrenaline and adrenaline were found. This review highlights the corrosive effects of various most popular chewable tobacco formulations; and damage done by their cocktail of carcinogenic substances and added ingredients, leading to oropharangeal cancer.

Pre- and postalpha-exposed PM-355 detectors were irradiated using UV laser with different number of pulses (100, 150, 200, 300, and 400). UV laser beam energy of 20mJ per pulse with a pulse width of 9ns was incident on an area of 19.6mm 2 of the samples. XRD spectra indicated that for both reference and UV-irradiated samples, the structure is amorphous, but the crystallite size increases upon UV irradiation. The same results were obtained from SEM analysis. Optical properties of PM-355 polymeric solid-state nuclear track detectors were also investigated. Absorbance measurements for all PM-355 samples in the range of 200-400nm showed that the absorption edge had a blue shift up to a certain value, and then, it had an oscillating behavior. Photoluminescence spectra of PM-355 at 250nm revealed a decrease in the broadband peak intensity as a function of the number of UV pulses, while the wavelengths corresponding to the peaks had random shifts., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical effects of untreated dental caries in Pakistani children residing in orphanages using the DMFT and PUFA index; association of decay and untreated dental caries with demographics including type of orphanage; behavioural and dental visiting pattern; and association of dental pain experience and type of orphanage with dental visiting., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a total of 753 orphan children belonging to 4-17 years of age group residing in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. Clinical examination of children was performed using the DMFT and PUFA index for the assessment of dental caries and untreated decay, followed by questionnaire enquiring about eating and oral hygiene habits, dental visiting pattern and dental pain and swelling experience. Association between dental decay, child's dental visiting and pain as a consequence of untreated decay was carried out using chi square test and logistic regression analysis., Results: The overall caries prevalence was 34.8% and overall prevalence of PUFA/pufa was 15.9%. The mean score of DMFT and dmft was 1.18 (SD 0.39) and 1.04 (SD 0.23), and mean PUFA was 1.18 (SD 0.57) and mean pufa score 1.14 (SD 0.35). Untreated caries ratio was found to be 49.1% indicating half the decay had progressed to involve the pulp. No significant association of gender was found with DMFT, dmft, PUFA and pufa (p > 0.05), however, when analysed individually, the 'D' component of DMFT was significantly associated with male gender (p = 0.05). Furthermore, no significant association of DMFT/dmft or PUFA/pufa in either dentition was found with behavioural characteristics such as dietary and oral hygiene habits. Also, 66.2% children who experienced pain had not been to the dentist in the past year (p = 0.013) and 52.6% children who mentioned experiencing pain at night had not been to the dentist in the past year (p = 0.009). Children with decay were more likely to have visited the dentist (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.42-7.6, p = 0.006). However, children who reported to have experienced pain were less likely to have visited the dentist in the past year (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.32-0.88, p = 0.014)., Conclusions: Moderate levels of decay were found in the sample with 'd' component majorly responsible for the cumulative DMFT index. However, alarmingly almost half of the decay component (49.1%) had progressed to involve the pulp. Experiencing pain in teeth prompted dental visits. Initiation of preventive services for children residing in orphanages in Pakistan would help greatly towards reducing the burden of untreated decay.

In this work, the effects of several factors, such as temperature, reaction time, and solvent and acid quantity on in situ transesterification yield of wet Nannochloropsis salina were investigated. Under equivalent total solvent volume to biomass ratio, pure alcohol showed higher yield compared to alcohol-chloroform solvent. For esterifying 200 mg of wet cells, 2 ml of methanol and 1 ml of ethanol was sufficient to complete in situ transesterification. Under temperatures of 105 °C or higher, 2.5% and 5% concentrations of sulfuric acid was able to successfully convert more than 90% of lipid within 30 min when methanol and ethanol was used as solvents respectively. Microalgal biofuels are not yet economically viable due to high material and energy costs associated with production process. Microalgae cultivation is a water-intensive process compared to other downstream processes for biodiesel production. Various studies found that the production of 1 L of microalgal biodiesel requires approximately 3000 L of water. Water recycling in microalgae cultivation is desirable not only to reduce the water demand, but it also improves the economic feasibility of algal biofuels as due to nutrients and energy savings. This review highlights recently published studies on microalgae water demand and water recycling in microalgae cultivation. Strategies to reduce water footprint for microalgal cultivation, advantages and disadvantages of water recycling, and approaches to mitigate the negative effects of water reuse within the context of water and energy saving are also discussed., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: We sought to determine the role of obesity and insulin resistance (IR) in the pathogenesis of inflammation in metabolic syndrome (MetS)., Methods: Our study included 100 patients with MetS and 100 age and gender matched control patients who attended a tertiary care laboratory in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Anthropometric data was obtained including height and weight to calculate body mass index. A record of patient's blood pressure (BP), waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) was made. Biochemical analysis included measurements of fasting glucose, triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), insulin, and high-sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP). IR was determined by the homeostasis mode assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) method., Results: The levels of hs-CRP were found to be elevated in all patients with MetS where it correlated significantly with all its components including measures of obesity, fasting insulin and glucose levels, IR, TG and HDL-c. However, on linear regression analysis only WC, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR remained significantly correlated with hs-CRP., Conclusion: MetS is a condition characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation, which arises because of increased abdominal adiposity and IR. Large multicenter studies are needed to gain insight into its pathogenesis and derive treatment strategies.

The present study assessed the use of hydrolysate of lipid extracted algal biomass (LEA) combined with the sugar factory wastewater (SFW) as a low cost nutrient and a carbon source, respectively for microalgal cultivation. Microalgal strain Ettlia sp. was both mixotrophically and heterotrophically cultivated using various amounts of hydrolysate and SFW. The culture which was grown in medium containing 50% LEA hydrolysate showed highest growth, achieving 5.26 ± 0.14 gL(-1) after 12 days of cultivation. The addition of SFW increased the lipid productivity substantially from 5.8 to 95.5 mg L(-1)d(-1) when the culture medium was fortified with 20% SFW. Gas chromatography analysis indicated a noticeable increase of 20% in C16 and C18 fraction in FAME distribution under above condition. Therefore, it can be concluded that the combination of LEA hydrolysate and sugar factory waste water can be a powerful growth medium for economical algal cultivation., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, a cooperative algal-bacterial system that efficiently degrades thiocyanate (SCN(-)), a toxic contaminant, and exhibits high lipid productivity, was developed. A consortium of mixed bacteria (activated sludge) and microalgae was sequentially cultivated under photoautotrophic and photoheterotrophic modes. The hydrolysis of SCN(-) to ammonium (NH4(+))-nitrogen and subsequent nitrification steps were performed by the initial activated sludge under lithoautotrophic conditions. The NH4(+) and oxidized forms of nitrogen, nitrite (NO2(-)) and nitrate (NO3(-)), were then assimilated and removed by the microalgal cells when light was supplied. After the degradation of SCN(-), the cultivation mode was changed to photoheterotrophic conditions in a sequential manner. Algal-bacterial cultures containing Chlorella protothecoides and Ettlia sp. yielded significantly increased lipid productivity under photoheterotrophic conditions compared to photoautotrophic conditions (28.7- and 17.3-fold higher, respectively). Objective: To determine the frequency of waterpipe smoking in students of different age groups., Study Design: Cross-sectional survey., Place and Duration of Study: Karachi, Pakistan, from February 2012 to February 2013., Methodology: The subjects were divided into two age groups. Group-I comprised of 13 - 17 years old randomly selected students from O' Level schools in Karachi and group-2 included 23 - 27 years old undergraduate and postgraduate students again randomly selected from various institutions in Karachi. A questionnaire was filled with prior consent, basic education on waterpipe smoking was given, and all the questions of the survey form were explained to the subjects according to context., Results: In group-1, 39% students smoked waterpipe. Most students had been smoking waterpipe for the last 2 years. In group-2, 48% individuals smoked waterpipe, majority of smokers indulged in the last 5 years and among them, most were falling within the last 2 years., Conclusion: The frequency of waterpipe smoking in teenage students was 39% and older students for 48%. Social and recreational use of waterpipes is widespread among both groups despite being acknowledged by majority as a health hazard.

Identification of novel microalgal strains with high lipid productivity is one of the most important research topics in renewable biofuel research. However, the major bottleneck in the strain screening process is that currently known methods for the estimation of microalgal lipid are laborious and time-consuming. The present study successfully employed sulpho-phospho-vanillin (SPV) colorimetric method for direct quantitative measurement of lipids within liquid microalgal culture. The SPV reacts with lipids to produce a distinct pink color, and its intensity can be quantified using spectrophotometric methods by measuring absorbance at 530nm. This method was employed for a rapid quantification of intracellular lipid contents within Chlorella sp., Monoraphidium sp., Ettlia sp. and Nannochloropsis sp., all of which were found to have lipid contents ranging in between 10% and 30%. Microalgae biorefinement has attracted in intensive academic and industrial interest worldwide for its potential to replace petrol biofuels as economically and environmentally advantageous alternatives. However, harvesting and lipid extraction remain as critical and difficult issues to be resolved. In the present study, four amino-groups functionalized organic-nano clays were prepared. Specifically, Mg or Al or Ca backboned and covalently linked with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane or 3-[2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyltrimethoxysilane by sol-gel reaction under ambient conditions, resulted in Mg-APTES clay, Al-APTES clay, Ca-APTES clay, and Mg-N3 clay, respectively. Each organic-nanoclay was utilized for lipid extraction from wet microalgae biomass. As a result, the lipid-extraction efficiency of paste docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich Chlorella sp. with low lipid content was high, while one of paste oleaginous Chlorella sp. with high lipid content was relatively low. Despite the low lipid-extraction efficiencies in all of the wet microalgae biomass, the conversion of the extracted lipids' fatty acids to biodiesel was nearly 100%., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A cultivation system in the two-stage photoautotrophic-photoheterotrophic/mixotrophic mode was adapted to maximize lipid productivity of two freshwater strains of Chlorella sp. grown in brewery wastewater (BWW). The endogenous Chlorella sp. isolated from BWW had a higher growth rate than wild-type Chlorella vulgaris (UTEX-265) while C. vulgaris (UTEX-265) had a higher maximal biomass and lipid contents than that of endogenous Chlorella sp., resulting in more than 90% of the inorganic nutrients in both total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (TP) was removed during the first stage in the two-stage photoautotrophic-photoheterotrophic mode in each Chlorella sp. The maximal biomass and lipid contents of C. vulgaris (UTEX-265) for single stage photoautotrophic cultivation were 1.5 g/L and 18%, respectively. Importantly, during two-stage photoautotrophic-photoheterotrophic cultivation for C. vulgaris (UTEX-265), the biomass was increased to 3.5 g/L, and the lipid productivity was increased from 31.1 to 108.0mg/L day., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. In microalgae-based biorefinement, one of the highest practical priorities is to reduce the costs of downstream processes. As one potential solution, microalgae harvesting by organoclays has received particularly keen research interest. In the present study, cationic charged aluminum- and magnesium-backboned organoclays were synthesized and solubilized in aqueous solution due to their high-density of amino sites. Each, within 30 min of its injection into 1.7 g/L-concentration microalgal feedstocks, effected harvesting efficiencies of almost 100% at concentrations above 0.6 g/L while maintaining a neutral pH.
