Development of environmentally friendly and natural-based products with healing properties has become a popular trend for human health. Here, for the first time as far as known, we reported an efficient antibacterial composite nanofiber which was functionalized with the herbal extract of Satureja hortensis (SH) via electrospinning technique for wound care dressing applications. The plant which was used for this purpose is cultivated on a commercial scale in our country, Turkey, and it is relatively inexpensive and widely used. Investigation of the herbal extract demonstrated 227% higher antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and 141% higher for Pseudomonas aeruginosa when compared with a commonly used strong antibiotic of amoxicillin. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)-based composite nanofibers including SH with a diameter of about 734 nm for the wound dressings also showed efficient antibacterial activity against these two pathogens which can lead significant health problems and deaths. FTIR characterization confirmed that there is no chemical change of SH when it was incorporated to the composite polymeric nanofibers by the electrospinning technique. We strongly believe that the obtained results suggest a potential natural-based eco-friendly approach for wound care dressing in contrast with synthetic and metal based-antibacterial agents, which have many negative effects on human body and the environment. Contents Rooster fertility peaks between 30 and 40 weeks of age and declines rapidly from 50 weeks of age. This is linked to a reduction in the number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate due to high density of spermatids in the seminiferous tubules of low-fertility roosters. In this study, we assessed the effects over spermatogenesis of both letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor, and a commercial herbal extract designed for improving fertility composed by Tribulus, Cinnamomum, Zingiber and Sativus. Forty-two-week-old Ross 308 roosters ( n = 24) were distributed into four groups: control, letrozole (0.03 mg/kg), herbal extract (0.04 ml/kg) and letrozole+herbal extract. After 14 weeks of daily oral supplementation, their testes and epididymides were weighed, fixed and sectioned for assessment of spermatogenesis and quantification of sperm cells inside the lumen. Differences in seminiferous tubules measurements and density of sperm cells were tested using R software (version 3.0.1). Although body weight was not affected by the treatment, testes from animals treated with the combination of letrozole and herbal extracts were heavier than those from control animals. Animals treated with either letrozole or herbal extract, or their combination, showed a significant higher number of sperm cells inside the seminiferous tubules and epididymis than control animals ( p < .05). These data suggest that the use of letrozole and the herbal extract could improve sperm cell production in ageing roosters. Background: The beneficial effects of traditional herbs of Crete, Greece for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections have been reported in observational and laboratory studies. Following a published, double blind, randomized, placebo controlled trial, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of an extract of three Cretan herbs on the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, upon its market release. Methods: An observational study was conducted in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Participants were patients presenting at selected pharmacies with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection, choosing to receive the extract for their treatment. Patients' symptoms (local, general, total) where recorded at three time points within 1 week, using a questionnaire developed based on the Wisconsin Upper Respiratory System Survey. For each patient, symptoms were scored on a 0-7 Likert scale and three indexes were calculated: the score of local symptoms, the score of general symptoms and the total score of symptoms. Effectiveness was assessed by examining the reduction in these indexes over the 1-week observation period. Results: Mean score of general symptoms was 19.1 (SE: 0.9) in day 1, dropping to 8.6 (SE: 0.6) and 3.1 (SE: 0.4) in days 4 and 7 respectively. Mean score of local symptoms declined from 7.9 (SE: 0.5) in day 1 to 2.3 (SE: 0.3) in day 4 and to 0.5 (SE: 0.1) in day 7. Total score of symptoms reached 27.0 (SE: 1.2) in day 1, decreasing to 10.9 (SE: 0.8) in day 4 and to 3.5 (SE: 0.5) in day 7. The percentage of participants reporting fever was 82.1% at baseline, 8.0% in day 4 and 2.0% in day 7 (p < 0.0001 for paired differences). Multiple regression models indicated that supplementary medication intake did not seem to affect symptoms' severity or the day patients reported that their symptoms ceased completely. Conclusions: This pragmatic study added evidence about the potential therapeutic effects of an extract of Cretan herbs on the amelioration of upper respiratory tract infection symptoms. Nitrofurantoin (NFT), an antimicrobial drug used for the treatment of uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections, produces gastrointestinal adverse effects that compromise treatment compliance. These adverse effects are related to oxidative stress generated by the enzymatic reduction of NFT. Objectives Evaluate the effect of Buddleja globosa Hope standardized extract (BG126 ® ) exhibiting a high content of antioxidant molecules, upon gastrointestinal adverse effects exerted by NFT. Design of study Placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized-trial at the Hospital Clínico Universidad de Chile, between April and October 2011. Subjects Non-pregnant women, aged between 18 and 80 years old, diagnosed with urinary tract infection sensitive to NFT. Methods 56 patients were randomized to receive NFT + BG126 ® (n = 28) or NFT + placebo (n = 28) for 10 days. Every 2 days, patients answered a survey to assess occurrence of adverse reactions. The authors analyzed ferric reducing ability of plasma, plasma malondialdehyde and complete blood count to evaluate homeostasis changes due to treatments and urine samples for treatment efficacy. Results At the 10th day of treatment, patients receiving BG126 ® had 47% reduction of nausea occurrence (90% CI; p < 0.001) compared to NFT + placebo group. Abdominal pain frequency decreased from the start until the end of the treatment with a mean reduction of 38% (90% CI; 30,9%–44.6%). At the end of treatment 19% of NFT + placebo group presented a positive urocultures, in contrast with BG126 ® group in which all were negative. Complete blood count and clinical chemistry showed no difference between groups. Purpose: Sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) accounts for over 95% of cases. Possible mechanisms of AD such as inflammation and oxidative stresses in the brain motivate researchers to follow many therapies which would be effective, especially in the early stages of the disease. IMOD, the herbal extract of R. Canina, T. Vulgare and U. Dioica plant species enriched with selenium, has anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory and protective effects against oxidative stress. Methods: In this study three AD-related genes, DAXX, NFκβ and VEGF, were chosen as candidate to investigate the neuroprotective effect of the extract by comparing their expression levels in the hippocampus of rat model of sporadic AD, using qPCR in the herbal-treated and control groups. The therapeutic effects on learning and memory levels were evaluated by Morris Water Maze (MWM) test. Results: Gene expression results were indicative of significant up-regulation of Vegf in rat's hippocampus after treatment with the herbal extract comparing to model group (P-value= 0.001). The MWM results showed significant changes in path length and time for finding the hidden platform in all groups during test and the same change in the treated comparing to the control group in memory level. In this report, the preparation of a modified carbon paste electrode based on highly defective mesoporous carbon (DMC) and room temperature ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIM.PF 6 ) was described for sensitive voltammetric detection of chlorogenic acid (CGA) in herbal extracts. DMC with desired defective structure was synthesized via a facile method using nanosilica as a hard template, sucrose as a carbon source, and KNO 3 as a defect causing agent. The characteristics of modified electrode (IL/DMC/PE) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronocoulometry. The electrochemical parameters of CGA on the surface of modified electrode were determined with the results of the charge transfer coefficient (α), the number of electron transfer (n), the electrode reaction rate constant (k s ) and saturating absorption capacity as 0.5, 2, 3.1 s −1 and 1.42 × 10 −9 mol cm −2 respectively. The proposed sensor exhibited a remarkably enhanced effectiveness toward the electrochemical reaction of CGA in aqueous solution. The electrocatalytic behavior was further exploited as a sensitive detection scheme for the CGA determination by Square wave voltammetry (SWV). Under optimized conditions, the linear response range and detection limit were found to be 2 × 10 −8 –2.5 × 10 −6 mol L −1 and 1 × 10 −8 mol L −1 (S/N = 3) respectively. In a preliminary in vitro study, a Panax ginseng extract exhibited an evident antibacterial activity against Yersinia ruckeri and Lactococcus garvieae and affected the respiratory burst and proliferation of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss leukocytes. Subsequently, the effects of a dietary ginseng extract supplementation on growth, blood biochemical profile, innate immune response and resistance against Y. ruckeri infection were investigated in vivo in rainbow trout juveniles. Four experimental diets were obtained by adding 0.0%, 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.03% of ginseng ethanolic extract to a commercial feed. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish (mean body weight 30.5 ± 0.15 g) at 1% of body weight day−1 for 10 weeks. The dietary supplementation with ginseng extract did not affect growth performance, feed utilization, biometric traits and fish whole body composition ( P > 0.05). No major changes due to graded levels of ginseng extract in the diet were observed in blood biochemical parameters except for increasing plasma triglycerides and non-esterified fatty acids in fish fed diets including 0.01% and 0.02% of extract ( P < 0.05). The innate immune response was barely modulated by the dietary addition of ginseng extract. Serum lysozyme and leukocytes respiratory burst activities were just slightly increased in fish fed all the ginseng extract-supplemented diets compared with controls, whereas serum antiproteases and leukocyte MPO were not affected ( P > 0.05). The dietary administration of ginseng extract induced a reduction in mortality of rainbow trout infected with Y. ruckeri, although no significant differences between treated and control groups were observed ( P > 0.05). Pereskia aculeata is a Cactaceae plant with valuable nutritional properties, including terrific amounts of protein, minerals, vitamins, and fiber. However, P. aculeata is reported to contain antinutrients and alkaloids in its leaves. In addition, in a study on growth and development, Wistar rats fed with P. aculeata and casein as protein source grew less than the control group (fed with casein only). Therefore, in this study, we evaluated, for the first time, the oral acute toxicity of P. aculeata in rats and also the cytotoxicity behavior of the plant on lettuce seeds. The acute toxicity research was carried out using dried P. aculeata ethanolic extract, in three different doses, administered by gavage to 24 female Wistar rats. The rats were then examined for signs of toxicity, food intake, body weight, and fecal excretion fluctuations, as well as histopathological alterations, using eight different body tissues. The acute toxicity study did not show any difference among the groups in either clinical evaluation or histopathological analyses. For the cytotoxicity study, dried P. aculeata ethanolic extract was applied on lettuce seeds in five different concentrations. These seeds were evaluated for germination, root and shoot length, and mitotic index. The results show that P. aculeata extract affects lettuce root and shoot growth, but not germination or mitotic index. In conclusion, the acute toxicity on rats and the cytogenotoxicity on lettuce of P. aculeata are neglectable, validating the potential of this plant to be used as a functional food. Objectives: To determine the effect of propolis on Candida albicans and to compare it with the effects of some other herbal extracts and antibiotics on this pathogenic fungi. Methods: The extracts of propolis, Thymus vulgaris, Caryophillium aromaticus, Echinophora platyloba, Allium cepa and Cinnamomum zeylanicum were prepared and the antifungi effects of the extracts were examined on Candida albicans ATCC10231 using disc-diffusion assay and micro-broth dilution. The minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) as well as inhibition zone were evaluated and the anti fungi effects of herbal extracts were compared with amphotricin B and nystatin at the times of 24, 48 and 72 h. Data analysis was performed using t test. Results: Obtained results showed that propolis extract with MIC and MFC equal to 39 and 65 μg/mL, respectively, possess the highest antifungal activity when compared with other studied extracts. The extracts of Allium cepa and Thymus vulgaris, with MFC of 169 and 137 μg/mL, respectively, showed the lowest effects on the fungi. Also nystatin and amphotricin B yielded better effects on the tested fungi compared with the effects of all studied extracts on Candida albicans. Conclusion: Propolis extract is effective in controlling Candida albicans. However, the issue requires further investigation on samples in animals and performing toxicological examinations. Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) cause foodborne and waterborne viral gastroenteritis worldwide. Because HuNoV culture systems have not been developed thus far, no available medicines or vaccines preventing infection with HuNoVs exist. Some herbal extracts were considered as phytomedicines because of their bioactive components. In this study, the inhibitory effects of 29 edible herbal extracts against the norovirus surrogates murine norovirus (MNV) and feline calicivirus (FCV) were examined. FCV was significantly inhibited to 86.89 ± 2.01 and 48.71 ± 7.38% by 100 μg/mL of Camellia sinensis and Ficus carica, respectively. Similarly, ribavirin at a concentration of 100 μM significantly reduced the titer of FCV by 77.69 ± 10.40%. Pleuropterus multiflorus (20 μg/mL) showed antiviral activity of 53.33 ± 5.77, and 50.00 ± 16.67% inhibition was observed after treatment with 20 μg/mL of Alnus japonica. MNV was inhibited with ribavirin by 59.22 ± 16.28% at a concentration of 100 μM. Interestingly, MNV was significantly inhibited with 150 µg/mL Inonotus obliquus and 50 μg/mL Crataegus pinnatifida by 91.67 ± 5.05 and 57.66 ± 3.36%, respectively. Treatment with 20 µg/mL Coriandrum sativum slightly reduced MNV by 45.24 ± 4.12%. The seven herbal extracts of C. sinensis, F. carica, P. multiflorus, A. japonica, I. obliquus, C. pinnatifida, and C. sativum may have the potential to control noroviruses without cytotoxicity. Introduction: While traditional periodontal treatments like scaling and root planing, antibiotics, and surgical intervention remain the primary approaches, herbal medicine is continuously evolving as an alternative for the management of periodontal diseases. This study focused on the evaluation of the cytotoxicity of Ocimum sanctum (OS)-based hydrogel for its use in local drug delivery in periodontitis., Methods: OS-based hydrogel was prepared using 50 g of OS powder and 200 ml of ethanol, along with carboxymethyl cellulose gel and sorbitol. The prepared formulation was evaluated for its cytotoxicity by using the MTT assay, cell viability, cell morphology, and brine shrimp egg assessment., Results: Cell viability was assessed, and it was above 95% for the control and 85% for the OS hydrogel by the 3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Brine shrimp egg assessment also showed a survival rate of 80% at low concentrations. Background Chewing areca nuts can result in an oral disorder known as oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), which has the potential to be cancerous. Although it is only beginning to spread to European and the North American continents, it is highly prevalent in Southeast Asia. The probability of malignant transformation from OSF is raised by chewing tobacco use. In the current research, our objective was to assess the potential anti-fibrosis effects and the ability to prevent malignant transformation through the application of mangosteen pericarp extract. Methodology The Ethical Approval-IHEC/SDC/OMED-2101/23/085 from the institution was obtained to conduct this ex vivo study. The cytotoxicity effect of mangosteen pericarp extract on both normal and fibrotic buccal mucosal fibroblasts originating from OSF tissues was tested. Cell proliferation and cell migration by scratch wound healing assay was examined. Dual staining was done to determine the mode of cell death. Additionally, real-time PCR was utilized to measure the expression of TGF-β/Smad2/3 signalling, α-SMA, and type I collagen gene expression. Results Mangosteen extract exerted higher cytotoxicity of fibrotic buccal mucosal fibroblasts compared to normal cells. Furthermore, mangosteen-receiving cells exhibited downregulation in the expression of the TGF-β/Smad2 pathway, as well as reduced expression of α-SMA and type I collagen. Background: Curcumin is a biomolecule that can be extracted from the Curcuma longa that has been shown to have the potential to aid skin wound healing. It has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may help to reduce swelling and promote tissue repair. However, curcumin has low solubility in water, which can limit its absorption and bioavailability. Encapsulating it in lipid nanoparticles may help to increase its absorption, leading to improved bioavailability., Methods: Curcumin-loaded nanostructure lipid nanocarriers (CURC-NLCs) were prepared and characterized. Also, the phenolic, flavonoid contents, antioxidant and antimicrobial efficacy against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were investigated. Furthermore, in vivo rabbit animal model was used to test its regenerative capacity and wound-healing efficiency., Results: The CURC-NLCs significantly increased the content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds compared to curcumin, resulting in a dramatic increase in antioxidant activity. CURC-NLCs also showed a potent inhibitory effect on Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and fungi, two times higher than curcumin. CURC-NLCs showed a higher potential to fasten the wound healing of full-thickness skin injuries as it resulted in 1.15- and 1.9-fold higher wound closure at the first week of injury compared to curcumin and control, respectively (p < 0.0001)., Conclusion: These results suggest that CURC-NLCs have an excellent potential to promote skin regeneration, which could be attributed to its antioxidant and broad-spectrum antimicrobial effect., (© 2023. The wound dressings fabricated by polymers and oregano essential oil (OEO) can be very effective as a hydrogel. The current study has been focused on fabricating the hydrogel membranes of oregano oil encapsulated as an antibacterial agent into sodium alginate (SA) solution by solvent casting method and then evaluated the antibacterial, antioxidant activity, and physicochemical performance of SA/OEO-based polymeric membranes. The polymeric interactions, surface morphology, water absorption capability, thermal stability, and encapsulation efficiency were investigated by FT-IR, SEM, swelling ratio, DSC, and encapsulation efficiency. The percentage encapsulation efficiency of essential oil was 40.5%. FTIR validated the presence of molecular interaction between individual components. SEM images showed a rough and porous appearance for hydrogel membranes. Moreover, DSC showed that the fabricated membranes were thermally stable. The inclusion of more content OEO decreased swelling ratios. The antioxidant test was carried out by DPPH assay and antibacterial test through disc diffusion method against microbes. The results revealed that membranes containing the highest content of OEO had more excellent antioxidant and antibacterial efficacy. Research Background: Herbs and spices used in traditional medicine are nowadays increasingly used in combinations to create functional food formulations aimed at treating specific symptoms and disorders. Among herbs originating from the Mediterranean region, extracts of myrtle ( Myrtus communis L.), bay leaf ( Laurel nobilis L.) and fennel ( Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) are traditionally used for gastrointestinal disorders. When considering how to incorporate these extracts into products, dairy-free milk alternatives provide an excellent base with almond-based drinks being among the most popular within this group., Experimental Approach: The aim of this study is therefore to optimise the formulation of an almond drink fortified with a 25 % (on dry mass basis) aqueous herbal extract containing myrtle, bay leaf (25 % each) and fennel seed (50 %) extracts. A central composite design with 20 formulations varied the content of φ (aqueous herbal extract)=2-6 %, lecithin as emulsifier 0.15-0.45 and xylitol as sweetener 2-5 % ( m / V ), while antioxidant activity, total phenolic content and sensory properties were determined as dependent variables., Results and Conclusions: The antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of the prepared almond drink formulations increased with the amount of added concentrated aqueous herbal extracts, as did the colour, herbal odour and flavour, bitterness and aftertaste. The addition of lecithin resulted in a darker colour and the sweetness was increased by the xylitol content. All formulations had good overall attractiveness, which increased with higher xylitol content., Novelty and Scientific Contribution: The current work offers new insights into the optimisation of fortified dairy-free alternatives. Background and Objective: Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease initiated by periodontal pathogens and progresses further in destruction of periodontium. Hence, the objective of this study was to test the efficacy of Ocimum basilicum seeds extract on periodontal pathogens., Materials and Methods: O. basilicum seeds were authenticated from a recognized taxonomist. They were coarsely powdered; ethanol-based extract preparation was done by the Soxhlet method and aqueous-based extract by hot infusion procedure. Extracts so obtained were assessed for minimum inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal concentration, zone of inhibition, and time-kill assay of O. basilicum seeds extract on periodontal pathogens, and comparatively evaluated the effectiveness against 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) gluconate in triplicates. Kruskal-Wallis Test was employed wherein the statistical significance was set at P ≤ 0.05., Results: The concentration of O. basilicum ethanolic extract against periodontal pathogens was determined to be 10 mg/ml, whereas 4.7 mg/ml of aqueous extract was proven effective against periodontal pathogens. Similarly, aqueous extract of O. basilicum developed a wider zone against periodontal pathogens compared to ethanol-based O. basilicum extract. Statistically significant difference found in the effectiveness between both extract and CHX., Conclusion: The antibacterial activity was evident in both the extracts of O. basilicum against anaerobic periodontal pathogens. Background and Objectives: Burns are a major global public health problem, accounting for an estimated 180,000 deaths annually. The majority of burn-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Considering the importance of treating infected burn wounds with the least adverse effects, we aimed to search the literature to find new treatments for infected wounds using medicinal plants. Methods: The search process was carried out using various databases including Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. We searched for relevant original and review articles (published in English or Persian) using the following keywords: herbal extract, herbal medicine, burn infection, and wound infection. Results: Overall, we found approximately 100 articles related to the use of medicinal plants for treatment of wounds or infections. According to these studies, main constituents of plant extracts were carvacrol, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolic diterpenes, and phenolic acids. Most studies assessed the antimicrobial activity by determining minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration using the disc diffusion method. The experiment evaluated the influence of isolated or associated phytogenic additives (PA) and organic acids (OA) on nutrient digestibility, performance and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens. Two experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement of treatments (with or without PA × with or without OA + antibiotic performance enhancer and anticoccidial). In the first experiment, two metabolic tests were conducted to determine the metabolizability coefficients of the nutrients of starter and growth diets. In the second experiment, 2520 one-day-old chicks were housed in 40 experimental units to evaluate the performance and carcass characteristics. The phytogenic additives and organic acids, isolated or associated, improve the nutrient digestibility of the diet and replace the growth- promoting antibiotics. The use of organic acids isolated or associated with phytogenic additives in broiler diets improves broiler performance in comparison with free antibiotic performance enhancer at 42 days of age. Isolated or associated phytogenic additives and organic acids provided better carcass characteristics.

There is proliferation of alcoholic beverages flavoured with herbal-extracts that are perceived to have medicinal values. Information on the phytochemical and heavy metal contents of these products is scarce. This study assessed the phytochemical properties and heavy metal contents of herbal-extract flavoured alcoholic beverages in major motor parks in Ibadan, Nigeria. The phytochemical properties of the beverages were determined in triplicate using standard methods, while the heavy metal contents were assessed while using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and means were compared using ANOVA at p < 0.05.The pH range of the beverages was 3.28–6.57 and the alcohol content was 34.0–51.5%. Detected major phytochemicals and concentration ranges were phytic acid (0.72–2.37 mg/g), alkaloids (0.42–4.11 mg/g), flavonoids (0.22–3.64 mg rutin equivalents/g), total phenols (1.13–3.66 mg gallic acid equivalents/g), anthraquinones (0.74–1.93 mg/g),and triterpenoids (0.74–1.93 mg/g). The heavy metal contents were Pb (2.13–4.70 mg/L), Cd (0.06–0.07 mg/L), Co (0.12–0.23 mg/L), Zn (0.14–0.40 mg/L), and Fe (0.72–4.22 mg/L); only Pb and Cd were above the World Health Organization (WHO) limits of 0.01 mg/L and 0.03 mg/L in water, respectively. The herbal-extract flavoured alcoholic beverages contain beneficial phytochemicals and traces of heavy metals. Safety awareness of these products for improved consumers’ health would be of public health importance.

"nBackground: Because of eventual side effects of chemical drugs, the efficacy of natural wound healing accelerators in long-term diseases and some situations is demanded to practitioners. The initial aim of our study was to assess full thickness excisional skin wound healing and inflammation diminution, Morphometrically and Histopathologically, after topical application of dried extract of Echinacea purpurea aerial part in rats, compared with zinc oxide. "nMethods: Sixty wistar rats received four full thickness excisional wounds with the aim of surgical punch on the back skin under surgical anesthesia. All rats were randomly divided into groups 1, 2 and 3, of Echinacea purpurea, zinc oxide and control, respectively. All of them were treated topically once a day for 21 uninterrupted days. Healing of the wounds was daily measured by taking digital photographs and analysis. Histopathologic assessment was carried out in the 0th, 3rd, 7th, 14th, and 21st days of treatment period as well, and wound healing was assessed using 1 to 6 healing grades. "nResults: According to Morphometric findings, the wound contraction rate in group 1 after 21 days of skin punching, with wound size of 0.18±0.03 mm2 in contrast with group 2, 2.81±0.21mm2, was much higher than that in other groups. Aims: To compare the anti–plaque and anti–inflammatory effects of new mouth rinse (nut meg) to the conventional chlorhexidine anti–inflammatory and anti–plaque effects (in vivo study). Materials and Methods: Sixteen dental students in the final year participated in this study (2 females and 14 males) aged 22–23 years (mean 22.5 years). A double blind study was carried out by measuring plaque index, modified gingival index and bleeding index pre–treatment and post–treatment with the two mouth rinses (nut meg and chlorhexidine). The same volunteers were participated in the two test periods and each period lasted 5 days with a wash out twice daily. Deterioration rate for each parameter was derived and used ass a unit of analysis. Results: The new mouth rinse (nut meg extract) had a significant anti–plaque and anti–inflammatory effects (measured by reduction in bleeding index), which was nearly equivalent to the anti–plaque and anti–inflammatory effects of chlorhexidine. No significant difference was noticed between post–treatment group (p > 0.05) of the two mouth rinses regarding plaque and bleeding indices. Conclusion: The nut meg extract mouth rinse had anti–inflammatory effect which encourage its use in dentistry as a new mouth rinse for the treatment of gingivitis.

Botanical extracts have been used empirically as crude extracts and semi-purified compounds to treat infertility problems. These herbal extracts are used to treat sperm disorders, sexual asthenia, libido and erection. In vitro and in vivo research have revealed that plant extracts contain a wide range of pharmacological potentials. Secondary metabolites from plants provide a treatment option for infertility due to their accessibility, affordability, and availability. However, botanical products are still traditionally used worldwide to solve reproductive disorders. For instance, extracts of Ferula hermonis have shown positive effects on different fertility problems, such as libido, erection, and sperm parameters. Introduction: Herbal supplements for health and disease treatment are growing worldwide. Due to its industrial market share, its popularity is rising. Sea buckthorn (Chondrus crispus), a Rhophycea supplement, is an edible seaweed. It is also used for respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Materials and Methods: A 60-year-old male patient with ischemic heart disease and COPD was admitted to the intensive care unit and diagnosed with multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS) due to respiratory discomfort, worsening overall health, elevated liver function tests and transaminases (ALT: 1738, AST: 2949, T. bil: 1,8, INR: 2.9), impaired renal function (urea: 157, creatinine: 3.13, GFR: 20), metabolic acidosis. Results: He had taken lots of sea buckthorn extract for three months to help with his respiratory problems, in addition to his prescription medications. Tachypnea and abdominal breathing were dominating the examination. The abdomen was stiff and sensitive, with hypoactive abdominal sounds. The capillary refill time was prolonged, and there was grade 4 mottling around the knee. Acute phase reactants were low, and no fever was seen. The ECG and echocardiography revealed no signs of ischemia. Reasons such as infection, acute coronary syndrome were excluded. The perihepatic fluid collection was identified by abdominal CT, and surgical pathology was ruled out.The gastroenterological assessment was considered for ischemic and toxic hepatitis. The patient died on the second day of his admission. Conclusion: Seaweeds are available as food supplements for alternative medicine. These seaweeds contain vital components such as calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and toxic metals. This group’s C. crispus contains hazardous components, including lead, cadmium, aluminum, silicon, sulfur, and bismuth. We don’t know how much of the harmful part was taken or what effect it had on health without a full study of these compounds. Objective: In 2021, an outbreak of an infectious disease characterized by torticollis, cataracts, and neurological disorders caused massive mortality in farmed American bullfrogs Rana catesbeiana in Hubei province, China. We identified the causal agent in this outbreak, characterized its pathogenicity, and screened candidate antimicrobial agents for future disease control., Methods: Bacterium was isolated from the diseased American bullfrogs and identified based on biochemical tests, sequence analyses (16S ribosomal RNA; DNA gyrase subunit B), and experimental challenge. Furthermore, antibiotic sensitivity of the isolated strain was detected with Kirby-Bauer paper diffusion method, and the antibacterial activity of 60 traditional Chinese herbal extracts against the isolated strain was evaluated by agar disc diffusion and broth dilution assays., Result: We identified Elizabathkingia miricola strain FB210601 as the causative agent of this disease. The isolated E. miricola strain FB210601 exhibited extensive antibiotic resistance to all tested quinolones, β-lactam antibiotics, and aminoglycosides. Eight herbal extracts exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against E. miricola FB210601, especially Caesalpinia sappan and Rhus chinensis, with minimal inhibitory concentrations less than 0.2 mg/mL. Additionally, the combined effects of two-component herbal mixtures containing C. sappan or R. chinensis were greater than those of the individual extracts., Conclusion: Our results provide a reference for understanding the pathogenesis of Elizabethkingia infection in frogs. Herbal plants have long been used as traditional medicines to treat diseases caused by microbial pathogens. The hepatitis A virus (HAV) causes acute liver infection through the fecal–oral route. Although the antimicrobial activities of herbal extracts against bacterial and some viral pathogens have been extensively studied, their antiviral properties against HAV have not been investigated thus far. This study was designed to investigate the inhibitory effect of 16 herbal extracts against HAV. Significant inhibition of HAV was observed only when HAV was co-treated with extracts. Ten out of the 16 herbal extracts demonstrated significant virucidal activity against HAV. Alnus japonica extract at a concentration of 50 μg/mL reduced HAV titer by 3.43 ± 0.24 logs. Artemisia annua, Allium sativum, Allium fistulosum, and Agrimonia pilosa extracts showed 2.33 ± 0.43, 2.10 ± 0.41, 2.07 ± 0.60, and 2.03 ± 0.26-log reductions, respectively. Pleuropterus multiflorus, Eleutherococcus senticosus, Coriandrum sativum, Ginkgo biloba, and Torilis japonica extracts reduced HAV titer by 1.02 ± 0.21 to 1.90 ± 0.33 logs. It has been argued that resistant cultivars may enhance the susceptibility of insect pests to insecticides, and thus can reduce crop production costs by lowering the rate of insecticide application. Here we studied the susceptibility of the cowpea seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), reared on either a susceptible or resistant cultivar of the mung bean ( Vigna radiate), to a herbal extract taken from the prickly parsnip, Echinophora platyloba (Umbelliferae). After selection of a susceptible (Parto) and a resistant (Sahar) cultivar, the median lethal concentration (LC50) of the herbal extract was determined as 24.41 and 20.28 μL/250 mL air against beetles reared on susceptible and resistant cultivars, respectively. Rearing on resistant cultivar had a significant effect on biological parameters of C. maculatus regardless of insecticide application. However, herbal extract showed a significant interaction with host resistance in terms of oviposition rate and pre-adult development time. These results provide evidence that the resistant cultivar increases the susceptibility of C. maculatus to herbal extract. The use of plant resistance in combination with narrow-spectrum insecticides seems to be of both economic and environmental importance, as it can reduce the costs of crop production and lower the doses of insecticides required for satisfactory pest control. Foram realizados três experimentos envolvendo 120 leitões (21 aos 56 dias de idade) para avaliar os efeitos de antimicrobianos e extratos vegetais sobre a microbiota intestinal (experimento 1) e a freqüência de diarréia em leitões (experimentos 1, 2 e 3). Os animais foram distribuídos em pares (um macho castrado e uma fêmea) em 20 baias (unidade experimental), em um delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, composto pelos tratamentos: controle - ração basal; antimicrobiano ração basal com bacitracina de zinco, olaquindox e colistina (50 ppm de cada); extrato vegetal A, B e C - ração basal com 700, 1.400 e 2.100 ppm de extrato vegetal, respectivamente. O extrato vegetal continha óleo essencial de cravo, tomilho, orégano, eugenol e carvacrol. Ao final do experimento 1, foi sacrificado um animal por unidade experimental e coletadas amostras do raspado do intestino delgado para a análise microbiológica. Não foram encontradas diferenças na análise microbiológica. A frequência de diarréia dos animais que receberam antimicrobianos foi inferior à observada nos tratamentos controle e com extratos vegetais no período de 1 a 35 dias de experimentação. Portanto, apesar de não terem sido detectadas diferenças na microbiota, os antimicrobianos foram efetivos no controle da diarréia.Two experiments with a total of 120 weanling pigs (21 to 56 d of age) were conducted to evaluate the effects of antimicrobials and herbal extracts on intestinal microbiota (experiment 1) and on fecal score (experiments 1, 2 and 3). Pigs were allotted in pairs (pens with a barrow and a female) to a randomized complete block design 12 replications of five treatments. Treatments consisted of: control - basal diet; antimicrobial - basal diet plus Zn bacitracin, olaquindox, and colistin (50 ppm of each); herbal extract A, B and C - basal diet plus 700 ppm, 1,400 ppm and 2,100 ppm of herbal extract, respectively. The herbal extract consisted of a mixture of essential oils of thyme, clove, oregano, eugenol and carvacrol. At the end of experiment 1, one animal of each experimental unit was slaughtered to collect samples of small intestine for microbiological analysis, that showed no significant difference. During 1-35 days of experiment, diarrhea incidence of pigs fed antimicrobials was lower than those fed control or herbal extract diet. Therefore, even though no statistical difference was observed in intestinal microbiota, antimicrobials were effective in diarrhea control.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de antimicrobianos e extratos vegetais sobre a digestibilidade, o desempenho, a morfometria e a histologia de leitões recém-desmamados. Foram realizados três experimentos de 35 dias (repetições no tempo), com um total de 120 leitões (40 leitões por experimento). O delineamento foi em blocos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos (controle - ração basal; antimicrobiano - ração basal com bacitracina de zinco, olaquindox e colistina (50 ppm de cada); extrato vegetal A, B e C - ração basal com 700, 1.400 e 2.100 ppm de extrato vegetal, respectivamente), 12 repetições por tratamento e dois animais por unidade experimental. O extrato vegetal continha óleo essencial de cravo, tomilho e orégano, acrescido de eugenol e carvacrol. A digestibilidade foi determinada em 40 leitões (quatro repetições por tratamento) utilizando-se o método de coleta parcial de fezes e o óxido de cromo como marcador. Ao final do primeiro experimento, foi abatido um animal de cada baia para coleta das amostras. A digestibilidade da MS no tratamento com extratos vegetais foi maior que nos tratamentos controle e com antimicrobianos. O tratamento antimicrobiano promoveu os melhores resultados de desempenho em todos períodos analisados. O maior nível de inclusão de extratos vegetais foi o que proporcionou os melhores resultados de desempenho e das demais variáveis. O tratamento com antimicrobianos resultou em menor peso relativo do trato gastrintestinal total e do intestino delgado vazio, além de maior altura de vilosidade e menor relação altura de vilosidade x profundidade de cripta do íleo que os tratamentos com extratos vegetais. Entretanto, são necessários mais estudos sobre os óleos essenciais a serem utilizados, a concentração de cada óleo, a melhor combinação e o melhor nível de inclusão na dieta.The purpose of this trial was to evaluate the effects of antimicrobial and herbal extracts on digestibility, performance, morphology and histology of weanling pigs. One hundred and twenty weaned pigs were used to compare five treatments: control - basal diet; antimicrobial - basal diet plus Zn bacitracina, olaquindox, and colistin (50 ppm of each); herbal extract A, B and C - basal diet plus 700 ppm, 1,400 ppm and 2,100 ppm of herbal extract, respectively, with 12 replications (pens of two pigs each) per treatment in a 35-d randomized complete block design experiment. The herbal extract consisted of mixture of equal amounts of essential oils of thyme, clove, oregano, eugenol and carvacrol. In digestibility assay, 40 pigs (four replications per treatment) were fed a diet with chromium oxide (marker method). On 35th day of experimental period, one animal of each experimental unit was slaughtered and samples were collected for analysis. The herbal extracts increased dietary DM apparent digestibility compared to control and antimicrobial treatments. The antimicrobial agents improved performance of weanling pigs during all phases of the experimental period compared to the other treatments. Pigs fed high dietary level of herbal extract showed better results for pig performance and other variables. The antimicrobial treatment improved the relative weights of intestinal tract and empty small intestine and improved ileum villus height and ileum villus height:crypt depth ratio of animals. However, more studies are necessary to evaluate which type of essential oil should be used and the best combination and inclusion level of herbal extract in the diet.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Chinese herbal extract Wenxin Keli, alone or in combination with Western medicine, for ventricular premature beats.Methods: This systematic review was registered at PROSPERO (registration number CRD42013003200). A systematic literature search of 8 core electronic databases and 3 clinical trial registries in Chinese and English, yielded 10 trials whose randomness verified by contacting the authors. The included trials were assessed by the Cochrane risk of bias tool.Results: Wenxin Keli might be more efficacious than placebo (Change of VPBs numbers, RR, 1.61, 95%CI, 1.48-1.76, P<0.00001, I2=0%;VPBs- related symptom, RR, 2.10, 95%CI, 1.91-2.30, P<0.00001, I2=0%), and the dual therapy of Wenxin Keli plus amiodarone might also be more effective than the monotherapy of amiodarone (Change of VPBs numbers, RR, 1.23, 95%CI, 1.10-1.39, P=0.0005, I2=0%; VPBs- related symptom, RR, 1.51., 95%CI, 1.30-1.76, P<0.00001, I2=0%), whereas Wenxin Keli might be comparable to metoprolol, propafenone or mexiletine (Change of VPBs numbers: metoprolol, RR, 1.01, 95%CI, 0.91-1.11, P=0.88, I2=0%; propafenone, RR, 1.05, 95%CI, 0.93-1.19, P=0.44, I2=0%; mexiletine, RR, 1.06, 95%CI, 0.96-1.17, P=0.28. Participants with ventricular premature beats' numbers<360 beats/h or with coronary heart disease benefited the most of the Wenxin Keli therapy (Change of VPBs numbers:RR, 1.10, 95%CI, 1.02-1.20, P=0.02, I2=44%; RR, 1.71, 95%CI, 1.18-2.49, P=0.005, I2=54%, respectively). The safety analysis revealed that Wenxin Keli did not statistically significant differed from the Western medicine in respect of the incidence of total adverse drug reactions (RR, 0.59, 95%CI, 0.35-1.01, P=0.05, I2=0%), but Wenxin Keli might be associated with a reduced risk of proarrhythmic reactions (P=0.007). The quality of the methodology of included trials was generally low. Several limitations existed that affected the validity of the findings, including the small sample size, insufficient randomization methods, poorly defined eligibility criteria, short duration of follow-up, absence of hard endpoints, and high risk of publication bias(P=0.013).Conclusions: Wenxin Keli might be a promising alternative and complementary medicine for ventricular premature beats. The Rumex Aquaticus Herba extract containing quercetin-3-β- D-glucuronopyranoside (ECQ) has been reported to exhibit various pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. This plant has been traditionally used for the treatment of diarrhea, disinfestation, edema and jaundice, and as an antipyretic drug. The aim of the present study was to investigate the ability of ECQ to protect against oxidative damage and to determine its signaling mechanism in AGS cells. The protein expressions of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and nuclear factor-erythroid 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) were measured by Western blots. Cell viability was measured by MTT assay. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were measured using 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein diacetate. Glutathione peroxidase levels were measured using kits. The protein expressions of HO-1 and its upstream mediator, Nrf2, increased after ECQ treatment. The HO-1 inhibitor, ZnPP, repressed the protective effect of ECQ on HO-induced cell damage. We found that LY294002, a specific PI3 K/Akt inhibitor, suppressed ECQ-induced HO-1 expression. ECQ significantly attenuated HO-induced cytotoxicity and ROS generation. Also, ECQ enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activities of glutathione peroxidase. These results suggest that ECQ exerts a cytoprotective effect against HO-induced oxidative stress by upregulation of Nrf2/HO-1 via the PI3 K/Akt pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare early wound healing, tooth staining and patient acceptance with two different post-surgical maintenance protocols. Materials and methods: Forty patients scheduled for flap surgery to treat periodontal pockets or accommodate dental implants were randomly assigned to receive the following two different post-surgical maintenance protocols: (a) 2 weeks rinsing with a 0.05 % chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX)/herbal extract combination (test) or (b) a 0.1 % CHX solution (control). Early wound healing was evaluated clinically and immunologically. Tooth staining and patient acceptance were assessed by means of visual analogue scale (VAS). Results: Both groups presented with comparable wound healing profiles. No statistically significant differences were observed between the two protocols regarding early wound healing and plaque index ( p > 0.05). However, in the control group, statistically significantly more patients felt discomfort due to tooth staining ( p = 0.0467). Compared with patients from the test group, patients in the control group reported statistically significant more irritation of taste at week 1 ( p = 0.0359) and at week 2 ( p = 0.0042). Conclusions: The present findings indicate that the two CHX protocols resulted in comparable healing and inhibition of plaque formation. Tooth staining and subjective discomfort related to irritation of taste were more frequent in the control group. Clinical relevance: A post-operative protocol including 0.05 % CHX/herbal extract may have the potential to improve patient compliance during post-operative maintenance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In vitro effect of the Melaleuca alternifolia, Lavandula angustifolia and Mentha piperita essential oils ( EOs) against Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and in vivo effect of M. alternifolia for treating ichthyophthiriasis in one of the most important South American fish, Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg), were evaluated. The in vitro test consisted of three EOs, each at concentrations of 57 μL L−1, 114 μL L −1, 227 μL L−1 and 455 μL L −1, which were assessed once an hour for 4 h in microtitre plates (96 wells). The in vitro results demonstrated that all tested EOs showed a cytotoxic effect against I. multifiliis compared to control groups ( P < 0.05). The in vivo treatment for white spot disease was performed in a bath for 2 h day−1 for 5 days using the M. alternifolia EO (50 μL L −1). In this study, 53.33% of the fish severely infected by I. multifiliis survived after the treatment with M. alternifolia (50 μL L −1) and the parasitological analysis has shown an efficacy of nearly 100% in the skin and gills, while all the fish in the control group died. Furthermore, the potential positive effect of M. alternifolia EO against two emergent opportunistic bacteria in South America Edwardsiella tarda and Citrobacter freundii was discussed. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a breast cancer subtype that has an aggressive phenotype, is highly metastatic, has limited treatment options and is associated with a poor prognosis. In addition, metastatic TNBC has no preferred standard chemotherapy due to resistance to anthracyclines and taxanes. The present study demonstrated that a herbal extract, SH003, reduced cell viability and induced apoptosis in TNBC without cell cytotoxicity. Cell viability was examined using trypan blue exclusion and colony formation assays, which revealed a decrease in the cell viability. Additionally, apoptosis was determined using flow cytometry and a sub-G1 assay, which revealed an increase in the proportion of cells in the sub-G1 phase. The present study investigated the anticancer effect of SH003 in the Hs578T, MDA-MB-231 and ZR-751 TNBC cell lines, and in the MCF7 and T47D non-TNBC cell lines. Western blot analysis revealed that the expression levels of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) cleavage protein in cells treated with SH003 were increased dose-dependent manner, indicating that SH003 induced apoptosis via a caspase-dependent pathway. Pre-treatment with the caspase inhibitor Z-VAD reduced SH003-induced apoptosis was examined using trypan blue exclusion. Moreover, SH003 treatment enhanced the p73 levels in MDA-MB-231 cells but not in MCF7 cells. Transfection of p73 small interfering RNA (siRNA) in MDA-MB0231 cells revealed that the apoptotic cell death induced by SH003 was significantly impaired in comparison with scramble siRNA transfected MDA-MB-231 cells. This was examined using trypan blue exclusion and flow cytometry analysis (sub-G1). In addition, SH003 and paclitaxel exhibited synergistic anticancer effects on TNBC cells. The present study was aimed at development of microbial resistant textile product using a natural bioactive agent. Ocimum sanctum leaf extract was applied on cotton and polyester/cotton blended fabrics for imparting antibacterial properties to the textile product for health care applications. The fabrics were treated with herbal extract of different concentrations, along with glutaraldehyde as cross-linking agent and sodium hypophosphite as catalyst by exhaust method. Antimicrobial assessment was performed quantitatively by percentage reduction test (AATCC-147-1998) against test organisms gram-positive bacteria staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) and gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (ATCC 11230). The results provided evidence that the treated fabric inhibited the growth of gram-positive bacteria by more than 92% as compared to the control samples. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis confirmed the presence of eugenol in Ocimum sanctum extract. Although, the treated fabrics showed enhanced crease recovery property, there was a marginal reduction in tensile properties. Improvement in crease recovery property of treated blended fabric was slightly less as compared to treated cotton fabric. The antimicrobial treatment negatively affects the bending properties and this negative effect was found to be slightly less for blended fabric as compared to pure cotton fabric. Background & Objectives: Punica granatum is a non-productive form of a plant and is used for the treatment of diseases in traditional medicine. In this study, we evaluate the antibacterial activity and the total phenol compounds of Punica granatum. Materials & Methods: Disk and well diffusion methods and MIC were used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of hydro-alcoholic extract on S. aureus and E. coli compared to standard commercial antibiotic disks. Measurement of phenol compounds were performed by Seevers and Daly colorimetric methods (Folin-ciocalteu indicator). Results: 35 and 29 mm inhibition zones in S. aureus and 22 and 17 mm inhibition zones in E. coli were shown by disk and well diffusion method, respectively. Also, 7.8 mg/ml concentration of extract showed the MIC points for two bacteria. Phenol compound of extract was 233.15±5.1 mg/g of extraction. Conclusion: Antibacterial effect of Punica granatum compared to antibiotics indicates the strong activity against examined bacteria. Extensive antibacterial study of Punica granatum is suggested. In this study, the effects of Ferulago angulata extract on the growth, haematological, and immunological indices of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fingerlings were evaluated. Basal diet was supplemented with 0 (control), 0.5, 1, and 2 g·kg-1 F. angulata and was randomly allocated to experimental fish of an initial average weight of 7.45 ± 0.02 g. After 8 weeks of experiment, the fish supplemented with F. angulata extract showed increased but non-significant (P > 0.05) growth performance. No significant differences were found between trial control groups in haematological indices such as red blood cell count, haematocrit, and haemoglobin, but there was a significant increase in white blood cells, lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes in the F. angulata extract groups (P < 0.05). Also, there were significant differences between the fish supplemented with dietary F. angulata extract and the control group regarding immunological indices, including immunoglobulin M, lysozyme, and classical and alternative complement pathway (P < 0.05). These findings suggest that the administration of F. angulata extract has a positive effect on the immunological indices and the immune system activity in rainbow trout fingerling. To investigate the role of polysaccharide from Acanthopanax senticosus (ASPS) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestinal injury, mice in three treatments were administrated orally with or without ASPS (300 mg/kg body weight) for 14 days, followed by challenge with LPS or saline. At 4 h post-injection, blood and intestinal samples of six mice / treatment were collected. The results showed ASPS ameliorated LPS-induced intestinal morphological deterioration, proven by improved villus height ( P < 0.05) and villus height : crypt depth ratio ( P < 0.05). ASPS also elevated the mucosal barrier of LPS-challenged mice, supported by reduced plasma diamine oxidase (DAO) activity ( P < 0.05) and L-lactate ( P < 0.05), increased mucosal DAO activity ( P < 0.05) as well as enhanced intestinal tight junction proteins expression involving occludin-1 ( P < 0.05) and zonula occludens-1 ( P < 0.05). In addition, ASPS decreased LPS-induced secretion of inflammatory mediators, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α ( P < 0.05) and prostaglandin E2 ( P < 0.05). Also, ASPS down-regulated messenger RNA expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and its downstream signals, including myeloid differentiation factor 88 ( P < 0.05), TNF-α receptor-associated factor 6 ( P < 0.05), as well as nuclear factor (NF)- κB p65 ( P < 0.05) and its protein expression. Background: Sporadic Alzheimer’s Disease (SAD) is caused by genetic risk factors, aging and oxidative stresses. The herbal extract of Rosa canina (R. canina), Tanacetum vulgare (T. vulgare) and Urtica dioica (U. dioica) has a beneficial role in aging, as an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative agent. In this study, the neuroprotective effects of this herbal extractin the rat model of SAD was investigated. Methods: The rats were divided into control, sham, model, herbal extract -treated and ethanol-treated groups. Drug interventions were started on the 21st day after modeling and each treatment group was given the drugs by intraperitoneal (I.P.) route for 21 days. The expression levels of the five important genes for pathogenesis of SAD including Syp, Psen1, Mapk3, Map2 and Tnf-α were measured by qPCR between the hippocampi of SAD model which were treated by this herbal extract and control groups. The Morris Water Maze was adapted to test spatial learning and memory ability of the rats. Results: Treatment of the rat model of SAD with herbal extract induced a significant change in expression of Syp (p=0.001) and Psen1 (p=0.029). In Morris Water Maze, significant changes in spatial learning seen in the rat model group were improved in herbal-treated group. Safe alternative anticoccidial drug to chemical feed additives are herbal extracts, because they don't results to tissue residue and drug resistance. In order to evaluate the effects of herbal extracts to control avian coccidiosis, 180 one-day-old broiler chickens were randomly divided into nine equal groups, as follows: (1) Biarum bovei (2) Nectaroscordum tripedale( 3) Dorema aucheri (4) Cichorium intybus (5) Prangos ferulaceae (6) diclazuril (7) Artemisia absinthium (8) infected control (9) uninfected control (each contains two groups). Administration of herbal extracts and supplementation of diclazuril was began 2 days before challenge and lasted for the duration of the experiment. The chicks of all the groups except uninfected control group were inoculated orally with sporulated oocysts (3 x 10³ oocysts of Eimeria tenella) on the day 22 of age. The criteria employed were: body weight, feed conversion ratio, blood in feces, survival rate, lesion scoring, number of oocyst output per gram feces and histopathological changes. For histopathological evaluation, on day 12 post inoculation three birds from each group were randomly selected and humanly sacrificed. N. tripedale and diclazuril revealed better results in terms of growth performance, lesion score, extent of bloody diarrhea and oocyst count as compared to other herbal extracts. The increase in the severity of lesions was observed in groups of D. aucheri, A. absinthium, B. bovei, P. ferulaceae, C. intybus, diclazuril and N. tripedale, respectively. Olea europaea L. leaves extract (Oe) and Hybiscus sabdariffa L. flowers extract (Hs) have calcium antagonistic properties. Aim of this work was to study the cardiovascular effects of Pres Phytum®, a nutraceutical formulation containing a mixture of the two extracts and the excipients, and investigate its possible off-target effects, using in vitro biological assays on guinea pig isolated organs. Cardiovascular effects were assessed using guinea pig atria and aorta. The effects of Pres Phytum on spontaneous gastrointestinal, urinary, and respiratory tracts smooth muscle contractility were evaluated. Pres Phytum exerted a vasorelaxant effect (IC50 = 2.38 mg/mL) and a negative chronotropic effect (IC50 = 1.04 mg/mL) at concentrations lower than those producing smooth muscle spontaneous contractility alterations in the other organs. Compared to Pres Phytum, the mixture did not exert negative inotropic activity, while it maintained a negative chronotropic efficacy (IC50 = 1.04 mg/mL). While glucogenic substances in ketosis prevention are commonly used, there is a lack of clinical studies about the effectiveness of ketosis therapy in particular by means of sodium propionate and herbal extracts. Fresh cows between 5 and 50 days in milk of 25 Swiss and German dairy farms were tested weekly for ketone bodies in blood. From 283 cows, 121 (42.8%) exceeded the threshold of 1.0 mmol/l blood-β-hydroxybutyrate (BBHB). Thereof 84 cows were randomly assigned to three treatments on each farm. Treatment SP-H was composed of sodium propionate (120 g per application) and an aqueous extract of seven herbs (13.5 g drug equivalent per application), treatment SP comprised pure sodium propionate (120 g per application) and treatment PL was a placebo. All preparations were fluid (in total 350 ml per application) and were supplemented with organic molasses (2%) and water. Applications were given orally twice a day shortly after milking for a period of four days. During an observation period of two weeks, milk yield and milk parameters (acetone, protein, urea), body condition score and BBHB were recorded. All three treatment groups had similar initial conditions, except for a non-significantly lower ketone body concentration in blood and milk in group PL. The results indicated a reduction of ketone bodies in all three treatment groups. Mean values in group SP never differed significantly from those of group PL regarding the observed parameters. During the first week of observation milk-acetone (MAC) concentration was reduced in all treatment groups: mean values in group SP-H were on the lowest level and differed significantly from those in group SP ( p =0.035) and PL ( p <0.001). The second week of observation did not reveal any significant difference between the assessed parameters. The largest reduction in BBHB concentration after two weeks showed group SP-H with a difference by trend to group SP ( p =0.06), but not to group PL. There were no significant differences between the groups concerning the other recorded parameters. Compared to placebo or pure sodium propionate a combination of sodium propionate with herbal extracts seemed to have slight advantages in a four days therapy of subclinical ketotic fresh cows. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) and an herbal mixture (Rumex crispus, Potentilla anserina, and Polygonum aviculare) on diarrhea course, hematological and biochemical parameters, and acid-base balance of rabbits. Twenty-four meat rabbits (Hyplus) were divided into four groups of eight animals. The rabbits were randomly divided into the following groups: HR - healthy rabbits, DR - rabbits with diarrhea symptoms, H - treated with 10% herbal extract, and EEP - treated with 10% ethanolic extract of propolis at 4 mL/L. The extracts were supplemented for 10 days into the drinking water. Hematological and biochemical blood parameters were examined, as well as the parameters of acid-base balance and antioxidant status. All the rabbits were subjected to clinical examination and their stool samples were tested for the presence of enteropathogenic E. coli. The used amounts of herbal mixture or ethanolic extract of propolis added to drinking water for rabbits with chronic diarrhea caused a decrease in the duration of diarrhea, concurrently improving feed intake and final body weight. Both the ethanolic extract of propolis and the herbal extract resulted in normalization of the acid-base balance and hematological parameters.
