Abstract

Abstract: Phase equilibrium for CO2–NaCl brine is of general interest to many scientific disciplines and technical areas. The system is particularly important to CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers and CO2 enhanced oil recovery, two techniques discussed intensively in recent years due to the concerns over climate change and energy security. This work is an experimental and modeling study of two fundamental properties in high pressure CO2–NaCl brine equilibrium, i.e., CO2 solubility in NaCl brine and CO2–saturated NaCl brine density. A literature review of the available data was presented first to illustrate the necessity of experimental measurements of the two properties at high pressures. An experimental method for measuring high pressure CO2 solubility in NaCl brine was then developed. With the method, CO2 solubilities in 0, 1, and 5m NaCl brines were measured at 323, 373, and 413K from 5 to 40MPa. The corresponding density data at the same conditions were also measured. For solubility, two models used in the Eclipse simulator were tested: the correlations of Chang et al. and the Søreide and Whitson equation of state (EoS) model. The latter model was modified to improve its performance for high salinity brine. In the density modeling, the correlations of Chang et al., Garcia''s correlation, and five different EoS models were tested. Among these models, Garcia''s correlation and the ePC-SAFT EoS generally give satisfactory agreement with the experimental measurements. An analysis was also made to show that dissolution of CO2 increases the brine density only if the apparent mass density of CO2 in brine is higher than the brine density at the same conditions. Abstract

Abstract: The Coarse Woody Debris (CWD) quantity, defined as biomass per unit area (t/ha), and the quality, defined as the proportion of standing dead logs to the total CWD quantity, greatly contribute to many ecological processes such as forest nutrient cycling, tree regeneration, wildlife habitat, fire dynamics, and carbon dynamics. However, a cost-effective and time-saving method to determine CWD is not available. Very limited literature could be found that applies remote sensing technique to CWD inventory. In this paper, we fused the wall-to-wall multi-frequency and multi-polarization Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (AirSAR) and optical Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) to estimate the quantity and quality of CWD in Yellowstone post-fire forest ecosystem, where the severe 1988 fire event resulted in high spatial heterogeneity of dead logs. To relate backscatter values to CWD metrics, we first reduced the terrain effect to remove the interference of topography on AirSAR backscatter. Secondly, we removed the influence of regenerating sapling by quadratic polynomial fitting between AVIRIS Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and different channels backscatters. The quantity of CWD was derived from P hh and P hv, and the quality of CWD was derived from P hh aided by the ratio of L hv and P hh. Two maps of Yellowstone post-fire CWD quantity and quality were produced. The calculated CWD quantity and quality were validated by extensive field surveys. Regarding CWD quantity, the correlation coefficient between measured and predicted CWD is only 0.54 with mean absolute error up to 29.1 t/ha. However, if the CWD quantity was discretely classified into three categories of “≤60”, “60–120”, and “≥120”, the overall accuracy is 65.6%; if classified into two categories of “≤90” and “≥90”, the overall accuracy is 73.1%; if classified into two categories of “≤60” and “≥60”, the overall accuracy is 84.9%. This indicates our attempt to map CWD quantity spatially and continuously achieved partial success; however, the general and discrete categories are reasonable. Regarding CWD quality, the overall accuracy of 5 types (Type 1—standing CWD ratio ≥40%; Type 2—15%≤standing CWD ratio <40%; Type 3—7%≤standing CWD ratio<15%; Type 4—3%≤standing CWD ratio <7%; Type 5—standing CWD ratio <3%) is only 40.32%. However, when type 1, 2, 3 are combined into one category and type 4 and 5 are combined into one category, the overall accuracy is 67.74%. This indicates the partial success of our initial results to map CWD quality into detailed categories, but the result is acceptable if solely very coarse CWD quality is considered. Bias can be attributed to the complex influence of many factors, such as field survey error, sapling compensation, terrain effect reduction, surface properties, and backscatter mechanism understanding. Abstract

A major goal of the hot QCD program, the extraction of the properties of the quark gluon plasma (QGP), is currently limited by our poor knowledge of the initial condition of the QGP, in particular how it is shaped from the colliding nuclei. To attack this limitation, we propose to exploit collisions of selected species to precisely assess how the initial condition changes under variations of the structure of the colliding ions. This knowledge, combined with event-by-event measures of particle correlations in the final state of heavy-ion collisions, will provide in turn a new way to probe the collective structure of nuclei, and to confront and exploit the predictions of state-of-the-art ab initio nuclear structure theories. Abstract

We present the first measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry $A_{LL}$ for dijets with at least one jet reconstructed within the pseudorapidity range $0.8 < \eta < 1.8$. The dijets were measured in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV. Values for $A_{LL}$ are determined for several distinct event topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and span a range of parton momentum fraction $x$ down to $x \sim$ 0.01. The measured asymmetries are found to be consistent with the predictions of global analyses that incorporate the results of previous RHIC measurements. They will provide new constraints on $\Delta g(x)$ in this poorly constrained region when included in future global analyses.

Abstract

Abstract: The Ru-doped Ruddlesden–Popper (RP)-type compounds Sr3Fe2−x Ru x O7 (, 0.3, 0.6, 1.0 and 1.4) were synthesized and checked by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The doping dependencies of unit cell parameters, resistivity () and magnetization were studied. Further, hysteresis measurements were done on the sample . Resistance measurements indicate that all the samples are insulators and electric transport properties fit the two-dimensional variable range hopping (VRH) model very well. Magnetism measurements show that a spin-glass state exists in all the measured samples when the temperature is lower than about 25 K. The temperature dependencies of the inverse molar magnetic susceptibility indicate that weak ferromagnetism occurs at a much higher temperature than that of glassy transition. 172. An Isolable Vinylidene ortho-Quinone Methide: Synthesis, Structure and Reactivity.

Abstract

Commonly, an elusive intermediate is generated from a precursor and then trapped and consumed in a reaction. Vinylidene ortho-quinone methides (VQMs) have been demonstrated as transient axially chiral intermediates in asymmetric catalysis due to their orthogonal π-bonds forming an allene motif. The current understanding of VQMs is primarily based on time-resolved absorption, trapping experiments and computational studies. Herein, we report the first isolation and comprehensive characterization of a VQM, including crystallographic analysis. The disturbed aromaticity of the VQM led to its high reactivity as an electrophile or a 4π-component capable of asymmetric dearomatization of an electron-deficient phenyl group. Notably, the VQM could be isolated in enantiomerically enriched form, and the subsequent transformation was stereospecific, indicating that the generation of the VQM was involved in the enantiodetermining step. 173. Safe range of shortening the middle thoracic spine, an experimental study in canine.

Abstract

Purpose: To determine the safe range of shortening the spinal column at middle thoracic spine and to observe the changes in blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB), microglia/macrophage activation and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity after shortening-induced spinal cord injury., Methods: Dogs were allocated to four groups. Group A (control) underwent laminectomy of T7 without shortening the spinal column. Groups B, C and D had 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 of T7 resected, respectively, followed by spinal shortening. Somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) and hind-limb function were recorded periodically for 14 days after operation. Spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) and BSCB were detected at the acute phase of shortening. Microglia/macrophage reactions and iNOS activity were observed by immunohistochemistry., Results: Shortening of 1/3 of a vertebral height caused no significant changes in SSEP and hind-limb function after operation, whereas shortening of 1/2 of the height caused SSEP abnormality and paraparesis, and severe neurologic deficit of hind-limb was observed when the shortening reached 2/3 of the height. SCBF increased temporarily and showed a trend of recovery when the shortening was within 1/2 of a vertebral segment height. When it reached 1/2 or 2/3 of the height, SCBF at 6 h post-operation was 86.33% or 74.95% of the baseline, and an increasing BSCB permeability was observed. In the subsequent 7 days, obvious activation of macrophage and increased number of iNOS-positive cells were observed., Conclusion: It is safe to shorten the spinal cord within 1/3 of a vertebral height in middle thoracic spine under two-segment laminectomy in canine. The BSCB disruption, macrophage activation, and increased iNOS activity were observed in the acute phase of the injury. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

174. Synthesis of ZnO/Si Hierarchical Nanowire Arrays for Photocatalyst Application.

Abstract

ZnO/Si nanowire arrays with hierarchical architecture were synthesized by solution method with ZnO seed layer grown by atomic layer deposition and magnetron sputtering, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the as-grown tree-like arrays was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under ultraviolet light at ambient temperature. The comparison of morphology, crystal structure, optical properties, and photocatalysis efficiency of the two samples in different seeding processes was conducted. It was found that the ZnO/Si nanowire arrays presented a larger surface area with better crystalline and more uniform ZnO branches on the whole sidewall of Si backbones for the seed layer by atomic layer deposition, which gained a strong light absorption as high as 98% in the ultraviolet and visible range. The samples were proven to have a potential use in photocatalyst, but suffered from photodissolution and memory effect. The mechanism of the photocatalysis was analyzed, and the stability and recycling ability were also evaluated and enhanced.

175. Projecting the spatiotemporal carbon dynamics of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem from 2006 to 2050.

Abstract

Background: Climate change and the concurrent change in wildfire events and land use comprehensively affect carbon dynamics in both spatial and temporal dimensions. The purpose of this study was to project the spatial and temporal aspects of carbon storage in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) under these changes from 2006 to 2050. We selected three emission scenarios and produced simulations with the CENTURY model using three General Circulation Models (GCMs) for each scenario. We also incorporated projected land use change and fire occurrence into the carbon accounting., Results: The three GCMs showed increases in maximum and minimum temperature, but precipitation projections varied among GCMs. Total ecosystem carbon increased steadily from 7,942 gC/m 2 in 2006 to 10,234 gC/m 2 in 2050 with an annual rate increase of 53 gC/m 2 /year. About 56.6% and 27% of the increasing rate was attributed to total live carbon and total soil carbon, respectively. Net Primary Production (NPP) increased slightly from 260 gC/m 2 /year in 2006 to 310 gC/m 2 /year in 2050 with an annual rate increase of 1.22 gC/m 2 /year. Forest clear-cutting and fires resulted in direct carbon removal; however, the rate was low at 2.44 gC/m 2 /year during 2006-2050. The area of clear-cutting and wildfires in the GYE would account for 10.87% of total forested area during 2006-2050, but the predictive simulations demonstrated different spatial distributions in national forests and national parks., Conclusions: The GYE is a carbon sink during 2006-2050. The capability of vegetation is almost double that of soil in terms of sequestering extra carbon. Clear-cutting and wildfires in GYE will affect 10.87% of total forested area, but direct carbon removal from clear-cutting and fires is 109.6 gC/m 2 , which accounts for only 1.2% of the mean ecosystem carbon level of 9,056 gC/m 2 , and thus is not significant.
