The reorganization of industrial construction management, as well as the reorganization of the MTS and the sale of machines to the collective farms, are measures of great importance which will result in a significant increase in the rate of expanded reproduction for the USSR's whole national economy. They signify a considerable increase in economic effectiveness of the means which the state and the collective farms have invested in the USSR's socialist economy. A maximal increase of economic effectiveness in the use of socialist funds is an important problem for the whole economic sphere. In connection with this the need is being acutely felt to find a method by which the effectiveness of the means invested by the state and the collective farms in the economy can be determined, a method which would be scientifically sound, precise and easy to apply in practice.

In March 1968, Massey-Ferguson, world wide leaders in the farm machinery business, entered the Industrial and Construction Machinery market. Seldom has a product launch been carried out on such a scale. This article traces the growth of the company from its inception in 1847 to the present day, and explains the stages by which the company planned and implemented this move.

As for the construction of the industrial zone here, factories and labourers in any industrial department are recently increasing.Especially the increase of the production goods industries is more remarkable than that of the consumption goods industries.At present, as far as the amount of production is concerned, the chemical industries occupy the top seat of all industries. When the factories are classified according to their productive scale, it is found that though the great majority of factories are middle or small industries, large scale factories occupy 70% of all industrial productions.Niigata industrial zone having such an industrial construction is favoured with abundant amount of electric power of low cost, inexhaustive limestone, natural gas, the hidden amaunt of which guessed 380 cubicmetres, the oil field, the productive amount of which is said No.2 in Japan, and Niigata Harbour, the biggest one on the coast of the Japan Sea.Since the zone here is favoured with these many advantageous locational conditions, the chemical industries above all will remarkably develop here, I believe.

Network models with both time and cost dimensions have not been used extensively on industrial construction projects. Analysis of 33 companies participating in the study revealed that network model requirements were incompatible with information currently generated by the organization. Moreover, the organizational structure of a company was a strong determinant as to the level of model sophistication adopted. For example, companies with decentralized estimating and scheduling used bar charts and simple time-based models. Incompatibility of model inputs requirements and available data was not a problem since the source and use of such information was at the same point in the structure.

The Volga-Vyatka region, one of the Soviet Union's leading machinery and chemical producers, has potentialities for further growth in these two industries. Favorable factors are a skilled labor force and a central transportation location in European Russia, midway between raw-material suppliers and markets. In view of industrial overcrowding in the Gor'kiy and, ultimately, Kirov urban areas, future industrial construction should be planned in medium-size and small cities and in the region's peripheral areas.

Figures in this report are based on our Survey for Sasebo City on June 1, 1953. These data have been obtained from 10 % sampling ordinary households by the Resident Regulation Cards, and they are referred to the Household Cards in the City Office or in the Municipal Police Station, then some field surveys have been carried out when necessary.Sampling households are 4, 736 (including 292 one person households), and their members are 21, 682 (4.58 per household). For the members per household by industry groups of heads, there are 5.96 in the 1st industry (11.2% to the whole heads), 4.55 in the 2nd industry (52.6%), 4.17 in the 3rd industry (15.6%) and 4.19 in the 4th group (not classifiable, not reported, unemployed or not in labor force) (19.8%).91.7% of heads have their domiciles in the 7 prefectures in Kyusyu, yet 78.8% in the Nagasaki Prefecture (including 49.3% in this city). The natives of this city since their birthdays give 19.2% to the whole heads, while the migrants since the 2nd War, 45.9% and those since the Korean Riot, 21.9%. In the age groups of heads, the first group is 30-39 (28.2% to the whole), the next comes 40-49 (25.9%) and the third is 50-59 (18.3%).There are 77.03 spouses (males ; 0.68), 206.14 children, 12.94 grand-children and 6.06 spouses of children per 100 heads. And 3.08 fathers, 11.59 mothers and 3.60 grandparents per 100 heads. For the lineal ascendants per 100 heads, this city has higher rate than those of the urban tabulation of the Census taken on 1920 and 1950. On the contrary, for the lineal descendants per 100 heads, the former is lower than the latter. For the spouses of the lineal descendants and other relatives, this city is in the middle of the above data.Comparing the size of households with each other, the largest is 4 person household (17.0%), and the next comes 3 person household (16.7 %). On the size of families, the order is similar to the above. Comparing the number of family generations with each other, the largest is 2 generations (68.4%), and the next comes 1 generation (15.9%).Nonrelatives are 0.24 per household, and most of them exist in the 3rd industry of head. For their age groups, this city shows higher rate in 20-29 years of age than the 6 largest cities in Japan.Then Sasebo has both urban and rural character in the household construction. The 6 administrative districts in this city have some differences from each other. The city proper has the most remarkable urbanity, while Nakazato-Kaize or Ono has rather rural character.These may well be due to the industrial construction and the increase of migrants in this city, since the Wor.

A technique is described, applicable to the manufacture of precast pretensioned concrete members, enabling the variation of the prestressing force along the member by a process of "controlled detensioning." The method consists in alternating the operations of casting and detensioning, leading to a predetermined reduced stress level at the member ends. The industrial process described below—for which patents have been applied for—is especially suitable for heavy bridge girders, and long-span beams for industrial construction where such standard operations as tendon draping or blanketing are eliminated. A numerical example is included to show the application of the proposed method.

There is a mood of pride and self-satisfaction currently spreading, in differing degrees of severity, amongst a section of leading, industrial cadres. In some cases, it has even developed to the stage where the situation has become dangerous. This mood of pride has already created very heavy losses in industrial construction.

Two new indices, valid for Italian industry, are presented here. The first has a general structure, the same as that of the ENR, and is based on a group of a few fundamental construction factors. The second, of technical origin, is meaningful only for the individual components of installation and is developed in this paper for various plant components of the chemical industry. An initial approximation index for petroleum refineries is also worked out.

Guidelines are needed for the development and protection of Pacific Northwest Estuaries. An inventory of estuarine conditions and resources should be completed and evaluated before industrial construction is permitted. In response to this requirement, Oregon State University under the National Sea Grant Program has initiated a study to measure the characteristics of the estuarine waters of the state. An approach to the determination of the predominent physical, chemical and biological parameters of these waters is presented. Parameters measured, equipment selected or developed and measurement techniques are described in some detail. Implication of the conditions found are discussed.

This book has for its subject the know-how gained in designing and constructing buildings under the complex engineering and geological conditions of the Extreme North. It offers recommendations for designing and production of various building structures used successfully for the erection of residential and industrial buildings on the permafrost grounds in the city of Noril'sk. It analyses the problems connected with reducing the cost of residential and industrial construction.

Maximum implementation capacity of commercial fusion reactors based on breeding and supply of tritium has been investigated. The implementation capacity of fusion power reactors depends upon the net tritium breeding gain and a requirement of the initial supply of tritium for a steady commercial operation. In the reference case, the maximum implementation capacity is 7 GWe in 10 years after the year of fusion introduction, 118 GWe in 20 years and 488 GWe in 25 years. It is mainly limited by the industrial construction capacity after 25 years. The maximum implementation capacity is largely depends on the preparation interval of operation as well as the tritium breeding performance. It means that subsequent reactors must start operation as soon as possible not to leave produced tritium. The requirement to the tritium breeding for a satisfactory implementation of fusion power plants is also discussed. In the case that fusion implementation is similar to the increase of fission reactors in last 40 years, tritium breeding ratio of 1.08 will be required for the early plants. On the other hand, tritium breeding ratio of 1.02 is sufficient when fusion plants are widely deployed.

In the directives of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union the growth of industrial production for 1956-1960 was established at approximately 65%. Furthermore, four-fifths of the increase of industrial production is to be guaranteed by increased productivity of labor. The creation of new industrial units through investment is planned for as well. For 1958 alone, the scope of government investments amounts to 198.8 billion rubles. Moreover, hundreds of large, new industrial enterprises will be put into operation. In connection with the serious increase in the scope of building new works and factories the question of increasing the effectiveness of important investments in industrial construction takes on greater importance than ever before.

The author describes portions of a series of conceptually based sculptural construc- tions related to various aspects of the subject of time. Descriptions cover examples of both static and kinetic objects within the series. Included is a discussion of the two types of modular construction systems used, one a modelling system, the other an industrial construction system. The technique for designing many of the objects in the series is based on the similar characteristics of the two systems. Thoughts pertaining to the use by visual artists of the materials, processes and equipment of contemporary science and technology are also presented.

In the German Democratic Republic nearly one third of all factories were built before 1945. To extend their life-span and economise on all investment for higher industrial production, an integrated programme of building modernisation has been started. It is based on ‘preferred solutions’ resulting from intensive studies. The programme and some of the chosen methods are explained here by the director of the Institute for Industrial Construction in the GDR Bauakademie.

The German Democratic Republic has carried out considerable work on the use of reinforced textile enclosures, both air-supported and mechanically stressed, for use in varying applications. The stage now reached, and the significant data involved, are discussed here by an engineer in the Institute for Industrial Construction in the Bauakademie.
