Diploma thesis "Media representation of homosexuals in the journal Hlas" deals with the ways in which gay people are represented in the journal Hlas (1931-1938) whereas Hlas was a journal aimed directly at the homosexual minority. This thesis employs the qualitative analysis method to uncover the regularities of the representation of homosexuals. It concentrates on the description of the homosexuals themselves, their characteristics and qualities, as well as relation between the homosexual minority and society.

Diploma thesis "The Emotional Intentions in the Interwar Political Cartoons (1918-1939)" deals with the view of selected events and personalities, by which is expected a highly emotional (she had: emotionally heady - laden) public evaluation. This view of political themes is followed in the period October 1918 - December 1919 and May 1938 - March 1939, in the objectively politically dynamic periods and within the field of collective emotions hypertrophic periods. The basic thesis states: Caricatures exude mainly negative emotions (though at the same time - secondarily - may involve in the perception positive emotions too, the overall tone of the caricatures and their persuasive intention is primarily an evaluative negation of the shown). Aim of my thesis is to try - by using semiotic analysis - to identify what emotions could be excited by recipients and to provide the emotional agenda. 1 also mention stereotypes in the representation of individual phenomena, but their representation is not the core part of the work. The working method is an innovation of traditional approaches to the interpretation of the cartoons, their forms and contents. Bachelor thesis "The Impact of the Velvet Revolution on the Form of Rudé právo Journal" tries to describe the changes that took place on the pages of Rudé právo journal right after the Velvet Revolution. The basis of the thesis is on an analysis of home news regarding the content (thus with the means of hermeneutical content analysis) and the rate of political and non-political articles (quantity analysis). The thesis deals with continuous ideological changes that one can notice in the reporting of Rudé právo in the era from October 1989 till the end of 1990. It is divided into three parts that on the ground of historical events determining each of the transformation phases: from the beginning of October to the half of November (the first demonstrations of the Velvet Revolution), from the Velvet Revolution till the end of the year (V. Havel's was elected the President) and the year 1990. Each section is accompanied by a brief historical chapter that should provide a historical context to the analysis.

My diploma thesis "Journalistic Memoirs" deals with memorial books written by journalists. It explores a role of these books in the literary theory, development of memoirs, reasons that led authors to write them and reasons of readers' popularity of the memoirs. The thesis also surveys which memoirs of the Czech journalists have been published after 1993 and analyses the particu lar memorial books of TV anchormen - both, their form and the content.

The Bachelor work deals with the life and work ol' the prominent media mogul W. R. Hearst who lived in the second half of the 19th and beginning of thc 20th century. It delivers answers regarding his approach to press, to journalistic work and summarizes his contribution to further development of journalism. Hearst's life journey is followcd fom his early childhood through adulthood. Other important people surrounding Hearst and influencing his further development are also introduced in this work. Hearst is not pictured here only as an unapproachable media personality, but also as a human being who errs and succeeds . As part of the work, the historic era and the introduction into life in local society are treated. What follows is a mapping of journalism during that time and mcntion of the most significant figures. An important part of thc work is Hearst's career in newspapers, which details his entry into journalism and follows his further steps in media markets. The next part focuses on his building of a media empire in the contcxt of historic and cultural events. The final part mentions media mogul R. Murdoch, who compares his work in the press with W. R. Hearst's. The Baehelor work summarizes Hearst's eontribution to journalism and brings a new angle to his personality.

The diploma thesis Printed Municipal Bulletins in Prague-We st District and Beroun District deals with municipal printed bulletins as a specific kind of media. Municipal bulletins provide information about political, economic, cultural, and sport events in respective areas. They have a very important role in distribution of local news. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part offers the definition of municipal bulletins and other important terms, and a description of legal aspects of their publishing. The second part analyzes results of a questionnaire research, which was conducted with publishers of municipal bulletins in Prague-West District and Beroun District. The purpose of this research was to obtain complex information on the number of municipal bulletins that are currently published in the districts. The research focused on organizational, economic, technical, and personnel background of publishing of the municipal bulletins. This important part of the research also attempted to obtain information about the level of pluralism of provided by the bulletins. The third part contains results of in-depth interviews with persons who are in charge of publishing the bulletins. This bachelor thesis, "The New Yorker Magazine," details the history of the title publication, from its founding in 1925 to its current rendering in 2009. The work's primary emphasis revolves around the circumstances under which the magazine was founded, briefly describing the atmosphere of media and journalism in the 1920s, while introducing some of The New Yorker's major contemporaries. It likewise concentrates on founder Harold Ross, a crucial figure in the magazine's history, revealing his life, tough starts as an uneducated reporter and journalist, and all that contributed to the realization of his dream in founding his own magazine. Consideration is also given to Ross' successor. William Shawn, who came to The New Yorker as a young journalist in the thirties and became editor following the former's death in 1951. Noteworthy moments and people during the long editorships (Ross was an editor for 26 years and Shawn for 36) of both men are covered, with descriptions of their respective personalities and shared passion for the magazine, as well as the differences in the way each ran the magazine. World War II is considered to be one of the worst war conflicts in the last millennium. The consequences have influenced millions of people all around the world. There were various circumstances which led to the declaration of war. Also the reasons for attacking Poland from the point if view of Germans were various. It was especially the role of argumentation and statements which justified these actions and helped to construct the common opinion and to reach the concensus in the public sphere. This diploma thesis is dealing with the propaganda and argumentation conception in the Nazi newspaper Der Neue Tag which was published in Protectorat Bohemia and Moravia by the end of World War II. This thesis concentrates on the war declaration and its circumstances. The first part is focused on theory of argumentation from the common public point of view, other parts are dealing with the concrete form of the argumentation, with associated language instruments and paradigms.

The piece "Activity of Dr. František Hofman in Media and Medial Practice" is a biographic study of František Hofman. It disserts briefly on his personal life and thereafter concentrates on his career in media. This text offers a compact view of Hofman's life to the reader although some of its components map less and the others more. The core of the bachelor diploma project is Hofman's activity in the press department of the Presidium of Council of Ministers. In the piece, this period of his life is described more contextually in respect to historic chains of events than the other periods. The context includes especially basic facts on political development in the area of current Czech Republic between years 1939 and 1941 and the presentation of the situation then in the area of legal press. Based on these facts, the piece the role and the position of František Hofman, while it discovers some personal and other relationships between him, other clerks in protectorate and journalists. The author familiarizes reader especially with the affairs which were related directly to the execution of the Hofman's function of the general editor of the press department and favorites the topic before the issues related to latter Hofman's arrest and the causes which lead to his imprisonment.

The presented thesis intends to introduce topics of both cultural periodicals issued in the Czech Republic from 1998 to 2006, as well as cultural politics in terms of which the the periodicals exist. The first part of the study examines a phenomenon of cultural periodicals from three different perspectives: socio-scientific perspective, setting the phenomenon in the centre of public and political sphere; formal and journalistic, perceiving the phenomenon as a set of particular literary and journalistic practices; contetual and art-based, providing a tool for grasping a complex and structured segment of cultural periodilcals. The second part inroduces briefly the Czech cultural policy, employed in the above-mentiod time span, in relation to the examined segment. This part refers to the conceptual base and its consequences for publishing of cultural periodicals. Along with this subject matter, the question of non-governmental subventions and an activity of key endowment funds is raised. The treatise seeks to accentuate a significance of cultural periodicals in the public life and their unsubstitutable position within the political as well as cultural life in its broadest sense.

In this diploma thesis I tried to focus on media and media industry as an economic branch. I think, that this view is specific within media studies, because not much attention is paid to media ekonomics in general. It doesn't mean, that there are no authors dealing with this topic, like Doyle, Picard, McQuail, Curran etc. Nowadays many ingenious media experts are aware of media as a part of market structures. Nevertheless I think, there are many issues to adress. My diploma thesis is dividend into two main parts - theoretical and practical. The first chapter of the theoretical part introduces my view of antagonism between reception of media in society and their real role, which is determined by economic principles. People think of media as an institutions, but they are instrument for capital assets evaluation, which I tried to analyze. I also focused on information as a primary material for media industry. Bachelor thesis "Transformation of the regional press in the early 90's of the 20th century - region Ceskobudejovicko (South Bohemia)" presents the situation of regional and local press in the region Ceské Budejovice (South Bohemia) in the early 90's of the 20th century. The change (of the content, owner, advertisment etc.) of the regional and local press was observed. The work is divided into the chapters by the type of the press and its target group. Also Syndicate of Southbohemian journalists and its foundation was discribed. The regional and local press is presented in the context of the history and situation of the region.

The introductory part of the text is focused on a resumption of the three most important international journalistic organizations established before 1946.

Diploma thesis "Vạn Xuân" - Ten thousand springs: Vietnamese journal in Czech republic deals not only with the magazine itself, but also with the Vietnamese press in Czech Republic in general. It is impossible to study Vietnamese press in Czech Republic without historical knowledge about this community on Czech territory. Hence, in the first part of this paper, the Vietnamese migration is fully explained. The aim of this work is to find out, how magazine Vạn Xuân reflects parallel Words in which it works - in Czech majority and Vietnamese minor. It is also important to know the range of information from Vietnam that the journal brings. Since most of Vietnamese do not speak Czech well and can not obtain information from Czech media, Vietnamese magazines are their primary, sometimes the only information source that they have. Thereby, Vietnamese press in Czech Republic has an important role in shaping knowledge and maybe even opinion of its community. Diploma thesis "Media and their management in the region of Pilsen 1945 - 1955" deals with media management in the Pilsen region within historical context of the first decade after the Second World War. It starts with restitution of press in May 1945 and foundation of the radio station in Pilsen. It observes restitution of the journalist organization in Pilsen, including post-war purge of journalists. Further, it describes growing influence of the communist party on media management in the Pilsen region until February 1948 when the communist party definitively gained political power in Czechoslovakia. After the so-called Victorious February, the thesis deals with another wave of purge among journalists in the Pilsen organization and abortion of non-communist press. It introduces the process of nationalization of the printing industry and new goals for journalists and media defined by the communist party. Finally, it describes the first half of the 1950s when other press restrictions and reorganizations of the printing industry in the Pilsen region took place. Bachelor work Deník Nová doba v letech 1939-1945 - regionální list na Plzeňsku v období protektorátu (Journal New age during years 1939-1945 - Pilsen regional journal in the protectorate period) treat with changes of the Pilsens journal Nová doba during above defined period. The work is aimed not only on the form of the journal itself (number of pages, columns, price, articles origin, graphic layout and photographs and so on) but also on editorial staff and operations of the redaction that definitely had formed orientation of the journal content. The way Nová doba process information, is explained in the analysis of articles that refer to the selected events. Chapters that are devoted to the journal itself are preceded by brief characteristic of examined years 1939-1945 in Czech and Moravia with stress on Pilsen region and description of the medial praxis valid at the same time period. At the same time is described brief evolution of the journal Nová doba during the time before and after the protectorate.

Bachelor thesis "Magazine Prague in Week in 1940 - 1944"presents a detailed characteristic of a regional weekly Praha v týdnu (Prague in Week), which was published in Prague in 1940 - 1944. Initially a programme review, the magazine informed its readers about what's on in Prague theatres and cinemas, about held exhibitions as well as different social events. It also gave information on new films and brought their reviews as well as interviews with artists; at first bringing light topic articles but later on focusing more on specialised essays from the field of culture. The aim of the thesis was to give a complex description of the magazine content as well as its inner structure, placing special emphasis on the volumes I, III and V (1940, 1942, 1944). The analysis focuses on the editorial staff, content of the magazine and how this has been formed in the course of time, comparing further the number and relation of Czech and German topics appearing throughout the magazine, presence of propaganda and texts with a political tone within a cultural and social, and therefore apolitical periodical, thus trying to answer the question of to which extent Praha v týdnu was a pro-German or even collaborative paper with regard to the period in which it was published. The thesis deals with the attitudes of political parties during the debating of media issues in the National Assembly of the First Czechoslovak Republic between 1920 and 1929. It surveys the parties' positions during the debating of the media legislation and parties' attitudes on the practice of confiscation and censorship in the context of the importance of the press for the party politics. Since the political parties' positions were strongly influenced by the specific context of the era, attention is also devoted to some of the peculiar characteristics of the First Republic.

Bachelor thesis "The birth of The Economist" deals with the birth and evolution of the weekly newspaper The Economist. That is from 1843, when it was founded, to 2007, when John Micklethwait became its editor. The main emphasis is laid on the birth of The Economist. The atmosphere of those times, the social situation in England in the middle of the nineteenth century and the pass and repeal of the Corn Laws is dealt with in order to describe the birth of The Economist more accurately. The situation at the media market is also described. A part of the thesis is dedicated to the economical thinking of Adam Smith, Thomas R. Malthus and David Ricardo. And to the doctrines of laissez-faire and free trade, which were the main motive, or more specifically their pursuit, for the foundation of The Economist. The thesis "The Launch and Growth of the Reader's Digest Phenomenon on the Czech Media Market" recounts the history of the Reader's Digest Association (RDA) and its Czech affiliated company, Reader's Digest Výběr s.r.o. The first part of the thesis presents a chronological overview of the RDA's development from its founding to the present day. The second part describes and characterizes the RDA's first and best known product, Reader's Digest magazine. The magazine also engages in thematic analysis, which determines the specific themes of its content. The thesis describes the RDA's activities in the international sphere, focusing primarily on its Czech affiliate, namely on both its production and the marketing methods used by this Czech company.

The thesis "Evolution of computer magazines by example of Softwarové noviny" deals with the Czech media scene of computer magazines. First part of it takes a glimpse at the history of world computer journalism and a closer look at the history of Czech computer journalism, describes its inception and first periodicals of its kind. The second part takes the example of the monthly Softwarové noviny and observes changes that it went through since its birth in 1991. Results of content analysis are used for describing the changes.

The bachelor thesis "Intraparty magazines of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 1980s" deals with the intraparty periodical publications, whose publishing was initiated by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Their main task was the education of the party members, political and economic propaganda and campaigning. The thesis works with primary sources (the periodicals) and secondary sources, which were published on the topic during the time period discussed. The following magazines are addressed: Party Life (Život strany), Campaigner's Word (Slovo agitátora), New Thought (Nová mysl), Visual Campaigning (Názorná agitace) and Tribune (Tribuna). The thesis follows the existence of these periodicals, changes in staff, periodicity, number of copies, eventually also the name of the periodicals. The contents and the tasks of individual prints are summarized in the concept of the Means of Mass Information and Propaganda (PMIP). Since the overall topic of my diploma thesis is propaganda in socialist Czechoslovakia , I focused my attention on mass sporting exhibitions, the socalled Spartakiada. To limit the scope of my research to a reasonable size, I selected years 1955, 1965, 1975 and 1985. I analyzed the content of the periodical papers published during this period. For this purpose I chose the following publications: Mlada fronta (published by the Socialist club of youth) and Lidova demokracie (published by the Czechoslovak People's Party). The aim of this thesis is to determine whether and if so howthe communist party used propaganda in relation to the mass sporting events. My hypothesis was that participants of the events were not influenced by the socialist propaganda. au contraire they focused mainly on sports without anypolitical underlying meaning. My bachelor thesis deals with life and work of Ruzena Kadlecova, czech journalist, whose important part of life was influenced by Second Word War. She worked for news agency called Central European Press. Because of her extraordinary language skills (she spoke English, French, German and Italian fluently), she was chosen by one of the exponents of Nazi party, Friedrich Rudl, as a translator. Before my analysis of cultural column in the newspaper Mlada Fronta Dnes, I asked a few questions and I set a hypothesis. I was curious, how the cultural page in the newspaper was influenced by american culture. In determined years 1992, 1996 and 2000, from four to eleven years after the 1989 velvet revolution in Czechoslovakia, followed by the change of political regime, I analyzed, to what extend are film, literature and fine arts published in the newspaper and also what space the cultural column actually takes. This diploma thesis refers about a famous Czech journalist Frantisek Gel (his own name was Frantisek Feigel) who lived in 1901-1972. After his unfinished studies he wrote for a weekly Soudni sin (Court room) for a while. Then he spent nine years (1924-1933) as a reporter of Lidove noviny, a very important Czech daily newspaper. In 1933 Gel left for Melantrich press. Melantrich at the time was the biggest publishing house in Czechoslovakia. As the World War II started, Gel left for France and became a member of Czech armed forces. While France was occupied byNazis, he came to Great Britain where he worked as a War correspondent. After WW 1I he started to work for the Czechoslovak Radio. He became very popular and famous for his Nurenberg processes' reports in 1946 and 1947. Then he broadcasted Bila kronika (White chronicles) programme. It referred about the brave and nice things people did to each other. Aftera year spent in a diplomatics he started to write the well-known radio programmes which popularized science and history. He retired in 1953. My diploma work concerns about the description of a regional journal Průboj, that was published in Northern Bohemia for 70 years. I focused on late sixties and tried to describe a personal constitution of editor's office including economical aspects of publishing. I also made a particular content analysis covering the time period from April 1968 till August 1969. Especially in the time of the "Prague Spring" Průboj maintained social reforms and their political representatives. That is why it was very popular with public. Průboj reporters commented on political situation in the Czechoslovakia practically without any censorship.
