Abstract

Quantum sensing has a bright future for applications in need of impeccable sensitivities. The study of periodic fields has resulted in various techniques, which deal with the limited coherence time of the quantum sensor in several ways. However, the periodic signal to measure could include forms of randomness as well, such as changes in phase or in frequency. In such cases, long measurement times required to detect the smallest of field amplitudes hamper the effectiveness of conventional techniques. In this paper, we propose and explore a robust sensing technique to combat this problem. For the technique, instead of measuring the signal amplitude directly, we measure another global property of the signal, in this case the standard deviation. This results in a much-improved sensitivity. We analyze the advantages and limitations of this technique, and we demonstrate the working with a measurement using a nitrogen-vacancy center. This work encourages scouting measurements of alternative statistics.

Abstract

Anticipating the onset, location and severity of radiation dermatitis before radiotherapy can aid in dermatological care. This study developed a method for creation of a prediction diagram for dermatitis and conducted a comparative verification between the prediction diagram and actual patient condition. The prediction diagram involved converting skin doses into 2 Gy fractionated equivalent doses using α/β of 10.0, defining regions of interest (ROIs) from 20-50 Gy at 10 Gy intervals. Overlaps between these ROIs at each dose level and the skin (external) was sequentially color-coded as blue, yellow, red, and purple. The study included four patients: two underwent head and neck treatment and two received neck and chest treatment. This approach involved a visual assessment comparing the prediction diagram with skin photographs captured at the end of treatment. Nurses marked skin sites corresponding to grades 1 and 2 on photographs, assessing their correlation with the predicted range. Visual assessment results were largely positive, although one patient exhibited slightly lower scores. Results revealed a correlation between grade 1 skin reactions and the 20 Gy regions. Grade 2 reactions were observed in regions near 30 and 40 Gy. Although discrepancies between prediction diagram and actual skin symptoms were observed in patients, a broad agreement was evident. The prediction diagram cannot accurately predict radiation dermatitis, as it does not account for skin symptoms unrelated to the dose. However, the diagram is significant as it provides physicians, nurses, and patients with concise and visually comprehensible information regarding the location of dermatitis.

Abstract

An extreme snow avalanche occurred on Mt. Nodanishoji, Japan, in 2021. This avalanche was the second largest ever documented in Japan and destroyed many trees and structures. Despite the increasing interest in avalanche disaster mitigation effects of forests, there are limited opportunities to obtain actual data sets on avalanches and forests. In this study, we reconstructed the avalanche velocity based on the cedar forest damage and simulated the avalanche flow using the dynamical run-out model Titan2D to reveal the avalanche movement and ascertain the braking effect of the forest on the avalanche. We successfully simulated the whole movement of the extreme avalanche with a horizontal runout distance of 2,800 m from the starting zone at an altitude of 1,700 m to the run-out zone considering the effect of the forest by increasing the frictional parameters in the model. Whereas in the case of no forest, the avalanche spread beyond its actual reach, considering the forest, the run-out distance decreased and was consistent with the observed reach. Comparing the results with and without forests, we ascertained the distinct braking effect of the forest on the extreme avalanche and quantify it in terms of a locally increased friction angle.

Abstract

Objectives To investigate the details of disaster-related deaths due to the indirect health effects of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident following the Great East-Japan Earthquake in 2011 and serve as a source of reference in the event of similar circumstances in the future.Design A retrospective observational study.Setting Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, which is located 13–38 km north of the FDNPP.Participants 520 residents of Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture, who were certified as having died from disaster-related causes between September 2011 and February 2021.Results The most common cause of death was circulatory system diseases (27.7%), followed by respiratory system diseases (25.0%) and neoplasms (15.4%). The prevalence of circulatory and respiratory diseases is higher in older people, suggesting that they are more susceptible to indirect health effects due to the environmental changes related to evacuation. Malignant neoplasms accounted for the third and leading cause of death overall and for people in their 50s, respectively, implying the potential impact of evacuation on cancer diagnosis and treatment. Suicide is the leading cause of death among younger people and can occur even long after a disaster, which shows the psychological impact of environmental changes.Conclusion To prevent indirect disaster-related deaths in the future, it is important to consider appropriate intervention methods by age group and period since disaster occurrence. It is especially important to improve the environment of evacuation shelters and establish a healthcare system for evacuees, create a system for cancer screening and treatment during evacuation and expand long-term suicide prevention measures.

332. Implications from the velocity profile of the M87 jet: a possibility of a slowly rotating black hole magnetosphere

Abstract

Motivated by the measured velocity profile of the M87 jet using the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) by Park et al. indicating that the starting position of the jet acceleration is farther from the central engine of the jet than predicted in general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we explore how to mitigate the apparent discrepancy between the simulations and the KaVA observation. We use a semi-analytic jet model proposed by Tomimatsu and Takahashi. consistently solving the trans-magnetic field structure but neglecting any dissipation effects. By comparing the jet model with the observed M87 jet velocity profile, we find that the model can reproduce the logarithmic feature of the velocity profile, and can fit the observed data when choosing $c/(100r_{g}) \lesssim \Omega_{F} \lesssim c/(70r_{g})$ where $r_{g}$ is the gravitational radius. While a total specific energy (${\cal E}$) of the jet changes the terminal bulk Lorentz factor of the jet, a slower angular velocity of the black hole magnetosphere (funnel region) ($\Omega_{F}$) makes a light-cylinder radius ($r_{\rm lc}$) larger and it consequently pushes out a location of a starting point of the jet acceleration. Using the estimated $\Omega_{F}$ we further estimate the magnetic field strength on the event horizon scale in M87 by assuming Blandford-Znajek (BZ) process is in action. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear probabilistic generative model of Koopman mode decomposition based on an unsupervised Gaussian process. Existing data-driven methods for Koopman mode decomposition have focused on estimating the quantities specified by Koopman mode decomposition, namely, eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, and modes. Our model enables the simultaneous estimation of these quantities and latent variables governed by an unknown dynamical system. Furthermore, we introduce an efficient strategy to estimate the parameters of our model by low-rank approximations of covariance matrices. Abstract

In order to precisely evaluate the impacts by super-Eddington accretors to their environments, it is essential to assure a large enough simulation box and long computational time to avoid any artefacts from numerical settings as much as possible. In this paper, we carry out axisymmetric two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic simulations around a $10~M_\odot$ black hole in large simulation boxes and study the large-scale outflow structure and radiation properties of super-Eddington accretion flow for a variety of black hole accretion rates, ${\dot M}_{\rm BH} = (110 - 380) ~L_{\rm Edd}/c^2$. The Keplerian radius of the inflow material, at which centrifugal force balances with gravitational force, is fixed to 2430 Schwarzschild radii.We find that the mechanical luminosity grows more rapidly than the radiation luminosity with an increase of ${\dot M}_{\rm BH}$. When seen from a nearly face-on direction, especially, the isotropic mechanical luminosity grows in proportion to ${\dot M}_{\rm BH}^{2.7}$, while the total mechanical luminosity is proportional to ${\dot M}_{\rm BH}^{1.7}$. The reason for the former is that the higher ${\dot M}_{\rm BH}$ is, the more vertically inflated becomes the disk surface, which makes radiation fields more confined in the region around the rotation axis, thereby strongly accelerating outflowing gas. The outflow is classified into pure outflow and failed outflow, depending whether outflowing gas can reach the outer boundary of the simulation box or not. The fraction of the failed outflow decreases with a decrease of ${\dot M}_{\rm BH}$. We analyze physical quantities along each outflow trajectory, finding that the Bernoulli parameter ($Be$) is not a good indicator to discriminate pure and failed outflows, since it is never constant because of continuous acceleration by radiation-pressure force.Pure outflow can arise, even if $Be < 0$ at the launching point., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

The ALPACA experiment is a project aiming to observe sub-PeV gamma rays for the first time in the southern hemisphere. The main goal of ALPACA is to identify PeVatrons, the accelerators of Galactic PeV cosmic rays, by observing sub-PeV pion-decay gamma rays generated in interactions between PeV cosmic rays and the interstellar medium. This new air shower experiment is located at an altitude of 4,740 m above sea level in the middle of Mt. Chakartaya in Bolivia. The air shower array consists of 401 scintillation counters covering an 83,000 m$^2$ surface area. In addition, a water-Cherenkov-type muon detector array with an area of 3,700 m$^2$ is installed to discriminate gamma rays from background cosmic rays. The prototype array ALPAQUITA will start data taking in 2022 and will extend to ALPACA in 2024. 336. Hidden Structural and Superconducting Phase Induced in Antiperovskite Arsenide SrPd$_{3}$As

Abstract

Enriching the material variation often contributes to the progress of materials science. We have discovered for the first time antiperovskite arsenide SrPd$_{3}$As and revealed a hidden structural and superconducting phase in Sr(Pd$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{3}$As. The Pd-rich samples (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.2) had the same non-centrosymmetric (NCS) tetragonal structure (a space group of $I41md$) as SrPd$_{3}$P. For the samples with 0.3 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.7, a centrosymmetric (CS) tetragonal structure ($P4/nmm$) identical to that of SrPt$_{3}$P was found to appear, accompanied by superconductivity at a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) up to 3.7 K. In the samples synthesized with Pt-rich nominal compositions (0.8 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1.0), Sr$_{2}$(Pd,Pt)$_{8-y}$As$_{1+y}$ with an intergrowth structure (CS-orthorhombic with Cmcm) was crystallized. The phase diagram obtained for Sr(Pd,Pt)$_{3}$As was analogous to that of (Ca,Sr)Pd$_{3}$P in that superconductivity ($T_\mathrm{c}$ $\geq$ 2 K) occurred in the CS phases induced by substitutions to the NCS phases. Abstract

BackgroundHeterogeneous mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic are documented in the general population. Such heterogeneity has not been systematically assessed in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). To identify distinct patterns of the pandemic impact and their predictors in ASD/NDD youth, we focused on pandemic-related changes in symptoms and access to services.MethodsUsing a naturalistic observational design, we assessed parent responses on the Coronavirus Health and Impact Survey Initiative (CRISIS) Adapted For Autism and Related neurodevelopmental conditions (AFAR). Cross-sectional AFAR data were aggregated across 14 European and North American sites yielding a clinically well-characterized sample of N = 1275 individuals with ASD/NDD (age = 11.0 ± 3.6 years; n females = 277). To identify subgroups with differential outcomes, we applied hierarchical clustering across eleven variables measuring changes in symptoms and access to services. Then, random forest classification assessed the importance of socio-demographics, pre-pandemic service rates, clinical severity of ASD-associated symptoms, and COVID-19 pandemic experiences/environments in predicting the outcome subgroups.ResultsClustering revealed four subgroups. One subgroup-broad symptom worsening only (20%)-included youth with worsening across a range of symptoms but with service disruptions similar to the average of the aggregate sample. The other three subgroups were, relatively, clinically stable but differed in service access: primarily modified services (23%), primarily lost services (6%), and average services/symptom changes (53%). Distinct combinations of a set of pre-pandemic services, pandemic environment (e.g., COVID-19 new cases, restrictions), experiences (e.g., COVID-19 Worries), and age predicted each outcome subgroup.LimitationsNotable limitations of the study are its cross-sectional nature and focus on the first six months of the pandemic.ConclusionsConcomitantly assessing variation in changes of symptoms and service access during the first phase of the pandemic revealed differential outcome profiles in ASD/NDD youth. Subgroups were characterized by distinct prediction patterns across a set of pre- and pandemic-related experiences/contexts. Results may inform recovery efforts and preparedness in future crises; they also underscore the critical value of international data-sharing and collaborations to address the needs of those most vulnerable in times of crisis.
