Purpose: To develop and test a novel, hydraulic, continuous, automated distraction device capable of 3D movements for treatment of mandibular deformities. Materials and Methods: We used 2 cadaveric and 5 live female Yucatan minipigs to test the distractor. The 3 components (miniature buried distractor, external power and control box, and user interface on handheld computer) operate on a closed loop in which the hydraulic pulse strength correlates with the resistance of the bone and soft tissue. The system auto-adjusts to correct any discrepancy between the actual and desired position of mandibular fragments. The distraction protocol included 0-day latency, 1 mm (divided into 94 increments) per day, and 24 days’ fixation. Clinical examination was performed and lateral and anteroposterior cephalometric radiographs were obtained preoperatively and postoperatively, at mid distraction osteogenesis (DO), end DO, and end fixation. Position information was obtained through the user interface. Results: Both cadaveric trials resulted in the desired distraction gap (11 to 12 mm), with all components functioning as designed. In 4 of the 5 live animals, distraction averaged 7.29 mm (range, 5 to 11 mm) over 12 days of activation. In 3 of the 5 live animals, the osteotomy gap filled in with bone by 24 days of fixation. Two animals were sacrificed prematurely (1 at mid DO and 1 at end DO) because vital components malfunctioned. Conclusions: The device is capable of automated, continuous, hydraulically powered DO at a rate of 1 mm/d. Future work will be directed at fortifying the device components and testing it in larger numbers of animals at varying distraction rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Global Plant Health Assessment (GPHA) is a collective, volunteer-based effort to assemble expert opinions on plant health and disease impacts on ecosystem services based on published scientific evidence. The GPHA considers a range of forest, agricultural, and urban systems worldwide. These are referred to as (Ecoregion × Plant System), i.e., selected case examples involving keystone plants in given parts of the world. The GPHA focuses on infectious plant diseases and plant pathogens, but encompasses the abiotic (e.g., temperature, drought, and floods) and other biotic (e.g., animal pests and humans) factors associated with plant health. Among the 33 (Ecoregion × Plant System) considered, 18 are assessed as in fair or poor health, and 20 as in declining health. Much of the observed state of plant health and its trends are driven by a combination of forces, including climate change, species invasions, and human management. Healthy plants ensure (i) provisioning (food, fiber, and material), (ii) regulation (climate, atmosphere, water, and soils), and (iii) cultural (recreation, inspiration, and spiritual) ecosystem services. All these roles that plants play are threatened by plant diseases. Nearly none of these three ecosystem services are assessed as improving. Results indicate that the poor state of plant health in sub-Saharan Africa gravely contributes to food insecurity and environmental degradation. Results further call for the need to improve crop health to ensure food security in the most populated parts of the world, such as in South Asia, where the poorest of the poor, the landless farmers, are at the greatest risk. The overview of results generated from this work identifies directions for future research to be championed by a new generation of scientists and revived public extension services. Breakthroughs from science are needed to (i) gather more data on plant health and its consequences, (ii) identify collective actions to manage plant systems, (iii) exploit the phytobiome diversity in breeding programs, (iv) breed for plant genotypes with resilience to biotic and abiotic stresses, and (v) design and implement plant systems involving the diversity required to ensure their adaptation to current and growing challenges, including climate change and pathogen invasions., Competing Interests: The author(s) declare no conflict of interest.

Global food security is vulnerable due to massive growth of the human population, changes in global climate, the emergence of novel/more virulent pathogens, and demands from increasingly discerning consumers for chemical-free, sustainably produced food products. Bacterium-based biological control agents (BCAs), if used as part of an integrated management system, may satisfy the above demands. Twenty phosphonate products found in the agrochemical market in Ecuador and Peru were evaluated in bioassays for the control of foliar potato late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans. Eight phosphonate products were evaluated in 16 field experiments done in Peru, Ecuador, Kenya, and Nepal. A meta-analysis across locations involving 71 combinations of potato genotype by site and year demonstrated a significant relationship between phosphonate application rate and efficacy for controlling late blight on potato foliage. The meta-analysis revealed that phosphonate rates of approximately 2.5 g a.i./liter provided efficacy similar to that of the conventional contact fungicides mancozeb and chlorothalonil used at similar rates. At rates higher than 2.5 g a.i./liter, the efficacy of phosphonate was superior to the contact fungicides. Overall, late blight control by phosphonate appeared relatively stable in field experiments across locations. An analysis of field experiments and 64 combinations of potato genotype by site and year showed no correlation between the susceptibility level of potato genotypes and efficacy of phosphonates. The cost of both phosphonate compounds and contact fungicides varied greatly among the countries of the field study; however, in Kenya, control with phosphonate was clearly less expensive than with mancozeb.

Accumulated rainfall thresholds were studied in seven field experiments conducted in Ecuador and Peru for their value in timing applications of fungicide to control potato late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans. Fungicide regimes based on accumulated rainfall thresholds ranging from 10 to 70 mm were compared with calendar spray schemes of every 5 or 7 days. Very low thresholds of 10 to 20 mm gave similar levels of control and resulted in similar number of sprays as did calendar spraying. However, neither low thresholds nor calendar sprays were effective in protecting susceptible potato genotypes in over half of the experiments. Thresholds of 25 to 50 mm of rainfall led to reduction in the number of sprays needed to protect resistant cultivars but also resulted in high levels of disease on susceptible cultivars. We conclude that timing fungicide sprays based on accumulated rainfall thresholds could be a successful component of integrated management strategies that include cultivars with moderate or high levels of resistance. The simplicity of measuring accumulated rainfall means that the technology can potentially be used by resource-poor farmers in developing countries.

Experiments were conducted to determine whether preemergence infection of potato sprouts by Phytophthora infestans occurs in the highland tropics of Ecuador. In three separate experiments in the field, P. infestans was identified on the preemerged sprouts of 49, 5, and 43% of tubers, respectively, which had been removed from soil prior to emergence. Tubers had been planted within 10 m of approximately 300-m 2 plots with mature potato plants severely infected with late blight. Infection potential of potato sprouts also was evaluated in the greenhouse by applying 10-ml sporangial suspensions (50 and 250 sporangia/ml) daily for 10 days to the soil surface of pots planted with sprouted seed potato tubers. The daily inoculation rate of 50 sporangia/ml (15.9 × 10 3 sporangia/m 2 ) resulted in sprout infection in 100% of inoculated pots and roughly corresponded to the sporangial deposition accumulated over 24 h in the field. Deposition had been measured at 1 m from a severely infected potato plot. Our study demonstrated the potential for preemergence infection of potato sprouts by P. infestans in the highlands of Ecuador, where year-round aerial inoculum is present. Preemergence infection is consistent with high levels of disease sometimes seen in recently emerged potato fields. These experiments indicate a need to reconsider disease management approaches.
